Five things to do in Potenza

The guidebooks don’t really recommend a visit to the regional capital of Basilicata . But we had a great time and enjoyed these five things to do in Potenza.

From the old town on top of the hill you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.

Potenza in Basilicata spreads across a high ridge 819 metres above sea level making it the highest regional capital in Italy. For this reason the weather often appears uninviting – at least when we’ve passed through – but this summer we finally stopped to have a look around.

The guidebooks don’t really recommend a visit, unless you have to change trains. Potenza has been ravaged by war and earthquakes, and very few of the ancient town’s original buildings have survived. So, even if Potenza can trace its roots back to pre-Roman times, don’t expect to find historic architectural and archaeological gems.

Instead Potenza is a place to relax and enjoy a slice of authentic south Italian living. Get to know the people, who are generally friendly and talkative even if the local dialect presents some challenges. Or follow these suggestion of five things to do in Potenza.

No town without a church visit

The cathedral built in rough grey stones in the 12th century is one of the only historical buildings still standing, and for this reason alone it is a must-see. The church is located in a charming square where crowds of young people hang out at night and it is surrounded by pretty houses some of which have been part of a former convent structure.

Via Pretoria is the main shopping street and the place to go for a nice passeggiata in the evening. It’s a souvenir free zone and there are few – if any – international chain stores around, which means you may find something unusual in the local shops with evocative names like ‘Redford’ and ‘Singer Magic Music’.

Hang out in front of the theatre

Piazza Mario Pagano in front of Palazzo del Governo and the theatre is an architectural atrocity with monstrous rusty lamplights. But kids love to play football in the square when daylight fades. There are giggling teenagers and coffee and drink sipping adults in cafés and porticoes along the periphery. And some Sunday mornings flea market vendors line up with old scooters, matchbox cars and other collector’s items.

Ancient pottery shards

The archaeological museum charges an entrance fee of 2,5 euro. This modest sum gives you access to an impressively large collection of ancient Greek and Roman pottery, jewellery and religious objects found in catacombs and graves in eg. Metaponto and Matera . I won’t forget the beautiful bronze bird or the chequered, ceramic house with four feet.

There’s lots of exercise involved in a walk around Potenza.

Potenza is a delight of free exercise. There is supposed to be elevators to the old centre on the top of the hill from Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, but it’s more fun to use the omnipresent stairs as holiday step workout.

This would have been a very incredible visit, and an area true to it’s charm and character when there are not a lot of tourist activity going on. Your 5 things to do in Potenza sound very relaxing and enjoyable. A 12th century cathedral would be absolutely AMAZING. I wanted to visit Potenza on my last visit in Puglia and Basilicata, but just couldn’t manage it. I’ll make sure to next time though! It’s great to see a first-hand account of choices in the oft-missed/ignored south too.

This is great info! We want to go to Potenza. So you took the train there? You don’t need a car to get there? Did you think this is a day trip from Naples or would you stay overnight? Thanks!!

We took the car, as we wanted to visit Pietrapertosa too, and there’s a steep one hour walk from the station to centro storico, so if you go by train from Naples, I’d definitely stay the night. That way you also have an excuse to try the brilliant restaurant on Via Marconi:)

Potenza is one of the most underrated historical cities in Italy but, at the same time, one of the most characteristic one because, for example, Potenza is the so called city of ‘100 stairs’ and also the ‘higher’ city in Italy (823 mt). Potenza is the capital city of Basilicata , sometimes called Lucania.

Having a somewhat rebellious history through the ages, Potenza was once reduced by ancient Rome to a military colony. From pillages in the Middle Ages to a number of earthquakes wreaking havoc, Potenza has emerged to the provincial capital and important railway corridor it is today.

Get in [ edit ]

Potenza is served by Potenza Centrale Railway station (formerly Potenza Inferiore), with intercity service from Rome , Naples , Salerno , and Bari . There is also regional train service to nearby towns.

Bus service is available from Rome Tiburtina bus station daily.

There are a series of escalators "Scale Mobili" which bring you to the top of the old town from the train station at the bottom.

There are extremely few street signs in Potenza. If you do not know where you are going, bring your own map and navigate via landmarks, instead of street names.

Stadio Alfredo Viviani - The soccer stadium; the local club plays in the Italian 3rd division ("Serie C").

Old town - The old town is located at the top of the town and features one main street Via Pretoria for a "passeggiata" at any time in the weekends, and in the evenings in weekdays. Try to walk in the quiet alleys around the main street, to discover the 40.64034 15.80646 1 Cattedrale di San Gerardo , reconstructed in the 18th century from its original 12th-13th century origin, the 40.63797 15.80093 2 Convento di San Michele , of medieval making from the 12th century with a Byzantine Madonna and De Grasis sepulchre. Another notable landmark is 40.64021 15.81008 3 Torre Guevara .

On Sundays, one can treat oneself by enjoying one of the restaurants near Old Town, such as La Tettoia . There is a pizza place next to Stadio Alfredo Viviani which is open on Sundays, however, where pizzas are cheap (€4).

In the old town, in the central piazza, there is a restaurant/pub that opens at 19:30 daily.

While making your "passeggiata" on the main street of the old town, you will pass a couple of gelaterias.

Potenza is located in the Basilicata region in southern Italy. The city is one of the highest regional capitals in Italy and overlooks the Basento valley. During the time of the Romans, Potenza had taken the side of the enemies of Rome during the wars against the Brutti. However, in 216 BC the Romans had again acquired Potenza and had used it as a military camp.

The city is spread out over an area of 173 sq. km with a population of approximately 68,000. Over the years Potenza has suffered destruction through the bombings of World War II as well as many earthquakes.

Attractions in Potenza, Italy

Duomo of san gerardo.

The Duomo of San Gerardo is the most important religious place in the city. The cathedral was originally built in the 12th century but had to be renovated in the 18th century quite heavily. From the original structure, the beautiful rose window and the apse still remain and these are the most noteworthy aspects of the cathedral. The interiors are quite beautifully decorated.

Church of San Francesco

The church of San Francesco dates back to the 13th century. The church is mainly worth a visit due to its beautiful interiors. The bell tower and the portal were added later in the 15th century to the church. Inside the church is a beautiful Madonna done in the Byzantine style and De Grasis Sepulchre, both dating back to the 13th century. Although, not as important as the cathedral the church is still worth visiting.

Torre Guevara , Potenza

The Torre Guevara is the only remaining tower from the ancient castle that used to stand in the location. The other towers and the castle itself had been completely destroyed long back. The architecture of the tower is quite noteworthy. Today the tower is mainly used for various art exhibits and shows.

Palazzo Loffredo , Potenza

The palazzo Loffredo was built as a noble residence in the 17th century. The palace is quite intimidating in size and has been beautifully restored. The interiors are just as beautiful with careful attention to detail. The palace is now used to house the national archeological museum of Potenza.

Ancient City Gates of Potenza, Italy

The city once used to be surrounded by ancient walls that were built for protecting it against invaders centuries ago. The walls have been destroyed long back but the three gates that were a part of the walls still exist. These gates used to be the point of entry for entering the city. The gates are Porta S. Luca, Porta S. Giovanni and Porta S. Gerardo.

Church of San Michele

The church of San Michele is believed to have been made in the 11th or 12th centuries. The church is built in the Romanesque style and has been fairly restored and renovated over the years.

Roman Ruins in Potenza, Italy

Potenza has the ruins of an old Roman villa that was believed to be a residence during the Roman era in the city. The ruins are open to visitors for exploration and are located in the Poggio Tre Galli part of the city.

Getting to Potenza, in Basilicata, Italy

Potenza being located at a high altitude, the transportation system here is limited. The train station only has a few trains coming in every day from the nearby provinces and regions. There are buses that reach Potenza from the smaller towns in the province as well as cities from the Basilicata region and these buses are fairly comfortable. Getting tickets is not very stressful since there are many buses each day that depart for Potenza. The easiest way to reach Potenza is by road by car since the routes are very scenic and are quite enjoyable.

Moving around the city of Potenza

Potenza can be explored on foot since most attractions are limited to the center of the town which is very compact. The roads here are quite picturesque so walking around is very enjoyable. The public buses can be used for reaching the sections of the town that are far from the center of the city. Those with their own cars will find it easier to just explore the city in their cars. Visitors can also rent scooters in Potenza or bicycles during their stay in the city since these are not very expensive.

Stay and Accommodation

Potenza has a good number of hotels and Bed & Breakfasts, most of which are of good quality and are fairly reasonable. Most hotels are located around the center of the town, but these would be comparatively costlier than the ones situated a little further away. There are also many Bed & Breakfasts to choose from and getting a room is not difficult since most hotels do not get completely sold out. The hotels in the city worth considering are hotel Vittoria, Park hotel, La Primula, Galgano, Grand Albergo and Albergo Miramonti.

Eating Out in Potenza

The restaurants in Potenza serve fairly simple food and are quite rustic. Most restaurants in the city serve Italian food and regional specialties. However, there are a handful of restaurants that serve international cuisines. As in all other cities in Italy, there are plenty of good pizzerias that serve freshly made delicious pizzas and are perfect for any time of the day. There are also quite a lot of restaurants in town serving European and Mediterranean dishes. Some good restaurants in the city are Ristorante II Grifo, La Dimora Dei Cavaliere, Ristorante Al Nord and Pantagruel.

Shopping in Potenza

Potenza has quite a lot of good places to shop. The old quarter of the city has some interesting shops that are small but have some authentic locally made merchandise. Almost everywhere in the city visitors can find traditional pottery and vases which are quite beautiful and are perfect for taking back home. There are a few places that sell locally made woolen and silk clothes as well as beautiful cashmere sweaters. The local open markets are also very interesting to visit even for those who do not want to purchase anything.
