travelling soldier lyrics

Two days past eighteen He was waiting for the bus in his army green Sat down in a booth in a café there Gave his order to a girl with a bow in her hair He's a little shy so she give him a smile And he said would you mind sittin' down for a while And talkin' to me, I'm feeling a little lonely She said I'm off in an hour and I know where we can go So they went down and they sat on the pier He said I bet you got a boyfriend but I don't care I've got no one to send a letter to Would you mind if I sent one back here to you? I cried Never gonna hold the hand of another guy Too young for him they told her Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier Our love will never end Waitin' for the soldier to come back again Never gonna be alone when the letter said A soldier's coming home So the letters came from an army camp In California then Vietnam And he told her of his heart It might be love and all of the things he was so scared of He said when it's gettin' kinda rough over here I think of that day sittin' down at the pier And I close my eyes and see your pretty smile Don't worry but I won't be able to write for awhile I cried Never gonna hold the hand of another guy Too young for him they told her Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier Our love will never end Waitin' for the soldier to come back again Never more to be alone when the letter said A soldier's coming home One Friday night at a football game The Lord's Prayer said and the anthem sang A man said folks would you bow your heads For a listed local Vietnam dead Crying all alone under the stands Was a piccolo player in the marching band And one name read and nobody really cared But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair I cried Never gonna hold the hand of another guy Too young for him they told her Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier Our love will never end Waitin' for the soldier to come back again Never gonna be alone when the letter says A soldier's coming home I cried Never gonna hold the hand of another guy Too young for him they told her Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier Our love will never end Waitin' for the soldier to come back again Never gonna be alone when the letters says A soldier's coming home

Behind the Song: Dixie Chicks, “Travelin’ Soldier”

by Rick Moore March 4, 2020, 5:00 pm

“Travelin’ Soldier”

Videos by American Songwriter

Written by Bruce Robison

American songs about combat soldiers coming home, or not coming home, have existed since long before the music business as we know it (think “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” from the Civil War). From early sheet music to today’s digital downloads, such songs have been big sellers because of the genuine emotion and sentiment behind the lyrics and melodies, and because so many people have lost their loved ones to war. One of the best of these songs is “Travelin’ Soldier” by the Dixie Chicks.

Home

While the Chicks themselves are good writers, they’ve also recorded a lot of good songs written by others. This was the case with “Travelin’ Soldier,” composed by Texas singer-songwriter Bruce Robison. Robison had recorded the song himself in the 1990s to little fanfare, but he hit the jackpot when the Chicks recorded it for their Home album in 2002. “Travelin’ Soldier” soon climbed to the top of the country charts as a single.

A song about a lovelorn teenage girl waiting for the return of the young Army soldier she barely knows, Robison paints a vivid image of a small-town Friday night at the local high school football field when the girl learns of her soldier’s fate: One Friday night at a football game/The Lord’s Prayer said and the anthem sang/A man said folks would you bow your head/For the list of local Vietnam dead/Crying all alone under the stands/Was the piccolo player in the marching band/And one name read and nobody really cared/But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair . The song really is a mini-movie, and Robison’s visual lyrics still bring tears to the eyes of a lot of listeners with this song.

“Travelin’ Soldier” was more than just a well-written and emotional piece of work. It was recorded by the Chicks while the U.S. was sending young people to fight in Afghanistan, so it was also timely, even though Robison had actually written it about a Vietnam War soldier. But since there’s always a war somewhere, it would have been relevant whenever it was cut. Then, just as the song was climbing the charts to number one, Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines expressed her displeasure with then-President George W. Bush from the concert stage because of his pro-war stance. Country radio stations pulled “Travelin’ Soldier” from their playlists over Maines’ remarks, and within weeks the song had disappeared. The career of the Dixie Chicks went into decline, and while they’ve never completely gone away, things have never been the same for them either.

And now the Dixie Chicks are back with a new song, “Gaslighter,” and Bruce Robison, a journeyman writer and performer if there ever was one (he’s still at it, often with wife Kelly Willis), hopefully got good mailbox money and some satisfaction from touching a lot of people with a great song.

Travelin' Soldier by The Chicks

travelling soldier lyrics

Songfacts®:

  • This song was written and originally recorded by Austin-based Country music singer-songwriter Bruce Robison in 1996. The song takes place during the Vietnam War, and is about an American soldier who befriends a waitress shortly before he enters the army. He writes her letters, as he has no one else to write to, and when he dies, she is the only one who knows. In a 2013 Songfacts interview , Robison told the story of the song: "I was working with in a kitchen in Austin was getting called up in the reserves for the first Iraq War. And generally that was the situation that started me thinking about that. I set the song in Vietnam, but those were the things that I was thinking about. If you'll recall, it took a long time for us to send all the people over, and there was months of amassing our forces over in Kuwait in the first Gulf War. Those were the thoughts going through my head."
  • This was a #1 Country hit for The Dixie Chicks, but it dropped off the charts shortly after a March 10, 2003 concert in London where Natalie Maines introduced the song by saying, "Just so you know, we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas." This statement caused an uproar among Bush supporters, many of which were Country music fans. Radio stations responded by dropping this song from their playlists, and in some cases, banning The Dixie Chicks completely. Their 2006 song " Not Ready To Make Nice " is about this incident.

  • Marianne Sullivan from Florida This song is not anti war! It’s quite simply a song acknowledging that there’s a “family” or loved ones behind that soldier so while those who respect our military may think it’s sad or that they made the ultimate sacrifice there’s a family in mourning and we should remember that our military and first responders are more than just the uniform they wear.
  • Anita Halwani from London Ul Just loooove this song.
  • Anita from London Uk Just love travellin soldier discovered it whilst listening to Zac brown so poignant .
  • Elise Knobel from Australia This is my favorouite song it is a nice one.
  • C-bear from Ellinwood It's quite blinding to think of their reputation being ruined over a small negative comment about the President when, in today's times, all kinds of famous ppl discount our 45th President as well as his supporters and get away with it! It was their right and freedom of speech yet it seems to be okay to say vulgar, downright mean things about those that support the 45th. Says a lot about what kind of ppl they are!
  • Anonymous beautiful song sang by the worlds most beautiful woman
  • Ashley from Bray Park That is my Fave song
  • Rose from Springfield Orgeron I love traveling soldier
  • Ava from Thousand Oaks, Ca Love this song.
  • Chuck from Whtby, On I love this song. When I first heard it right away I understood it was about a love-war story. I still love this some. Makes me think of my life.
  • Bay from Weaverville, Ca its such a sweet song, i listen to it over and over. Love the dynamics, quiet then loud.
  • Mojo from Lafayette, In, In This song's writer, Bruce Robison, is Dixie Chick Emily Robison's brother-in-law.
  • Tayluur from Binghamton, Ny This song is very touching. I listened to this alot when I was younger (7-11) and never really paid attention. One night last week, though, I remebered it and listened to it. Once I paid attention, I was very sad and I cried at the end. Amazing.
  • Berto from Northport, Fl if anyone thinks this song is anti-war, they're stupid. this song says nothing about being against war. it's a pretty story, and simply that. whatever reality this somg may contain is specific to a select few and does not make sweeping generalizations to all hearers. it's about a soldier who had no one to write to so he sends letters to the waitress. unfortunately he dies, and when his name is announced at a local football game, she is the only one who knows who he is. similar situations happen everyday. it makes you think about how many people are out htere that we simply overlook because we're too busy or too self consumed. so this song is beauty in written form and a nice, possibly related story. nothing more.
  • Ron from Tyler, Tx Everyone treats this song as "anti-war," and in the sense that it acknowledges that people die in wars, and it's sad, and pretty much senseless, it's anti-war. But even if the war is just and right, people die, and it's sad, and people at home cry, and that sadness just doesn't make sense. It's the price that must be paid for war, and the decision to go to war must acknowledge the price. Beautiful song; very very sad.

Anne Monique, just shut it. I TOTALLY support the Dixie Chicks. ^^ I am really proud of what they did, for even though the USA is a free country, many are scared of disagreeing of something, for the fear of getting their heads bitten off or being called 'Unamerican', which I think is just plain Bullshit. ^^ I just hope that we have more and more people boycotting something they dissagree on in the future, for it symbolizes TRUE freedom. ^^

This has got to be one of the most depressing songs I've ever heard. The whole thing about a soldier leaving for vietnam, then writing a letter that says he "won't be able to write for a while", and then you never hear from him again...that's just so damn sad. Maybe what makes it even more sad is that you know that this kind of thing happened all the time (and I guess still happens today). But I must admit it is a beautiful song, musically, but it's just really depressing.

sorry to yall who think this song is depressing...life isn't allbutterflies and rainbows and greener grass this song is very true for what was going on during the veitnam war......i love it ......as for their remark about bush i didn't love that and think that they're not all to blame only Natalie said something matry and emily didn't say anything soooo if ya wanna boycott the dixie chicks..remember you sould only be upset at 1/3 of the chicks the other 2 aren't to blame and hurting them.l.innocient people...

Look. I think people understand that all of the world isn't good. That's no reason not to find something sad...

I agree with you at the top, but why hate them at all? the song is giving a messege telling us what some people have to go through in life with people dieing. There are some people like me who have a boyfriend at war/bootcamp and ya i never want to see the day he doesnt get to come home but, this is mine and his song and we both know no matter what happens between us ill always care for him. So sad could trun into good.

My husband is in Iraq right now. I can relate to most of this better than most. The sadness, depression and feeling of emptiness is unbearable. I don't know what I would ever do without him. This song is very sad, but I absolutly love it. I pray every day that our song doesn't have the same ending. May God bless our soldiers and bring them home safely.

This is such a sweet/sad song. My ex-boyfriend of 2 years joined the Marines while we were dating but the long distance thing wasn't working out too well. We are such good friends now and everytime he comes home, we are always together. This songs describes our whole relationship...b/c I'm waiting for the love of the travelin soldier and our love will never end...

This song is so depressing, but it's absolutely beautiful. The first time I heard it was with a friend who kept saying the song made him want to die.

this song is absolutely depressing....i dont even like country that well...but this country song is great...it makes me think of a story line..and the fact that this one moment of mercy that this girl with a bow in her hair had to talk to a man that was scared outta his wits by the fact that he had to go over seas and go to war...this act of humanity ....made them both fall in love over a few hours talkin and a few letters written...this reminds me so much of finding out that somoene that used to be close to you died...and im 17..but ive had some friends die...and some that i wasnt so close to anymore..but when i found out they had died...it tore me competely apart...this song means the world to so many...out

My lil sisters were singing this one day- they are 7&5 and i was like- wut u singing? Then they played the song later and i listened hard and i cried my eyes out. I can relate in a way and it hit me hard and i cried and cried. The song is beautiful even though i don't really like country music but wow what a sad song of lost love. This might happen to alot of young girls if we go to war with Iraq. Hopefully not!!

Well I can honestly say I cannot hear this song without crying. Especially now since I found out we are going to war in less than 48 hours. You are not human if this song does not touch you in one way or another. I don't see how the Dixie Chicks can perform this song so well without choking up & start crying. I sing along to it and I ALWAYS cry...can't help it :o(

The Dixie Chicks are an American country music band which has also crossed over into other genres. The band is composed of founding members (and sisters) Martie Erwin Maguire and Emily Erwin Robison, and lead singer Natalie Maines. The band formed in 1989 in Dallas, Texas and was originally composed of four women performing bluegrass and country music, busking and touring the bluegrass festival circuits and small venues for six years without attracting a major label. After the departure of one bandmate, the replacement of their lead singer, and a slight change in their repertoire, the Dixie Chicks soon achieved commercial success, beginning in 1998 with hit songs "There's Your Trouble" and "Wide Open Spaces". more »

'Travelin' Soldier': The Story Behind The Chicks' Heartbreaking Story Song

Good songwriters always choose the best music to record. The Chicks (formerly Dixie Chicks) are phenomenal songwriters themselves, and they chose a lot of great songs written by others, as well. "Travelin' Soldier" was written by Texas singer-songwriter Bruce Robison of Austin , Texas. Robison released the song on his 1999 album  Long Way Home From Anywhere.

The Story Behind 'Travelin' Soldier'

"Travelin' Soldier" is the story of a teenage girl who is waiting for a young soldier who has been drafted. The girl writes letters and waits for the soldier to return from the war. The song paints a beautifully tragic picture for the listener, who also starts to wait for the soldier's return.

The Chicks recorded the song and released it on their 2002 album Home . The song was the power group's sixth and final single to reach the No. 1 spot on charts. The band's single "I'm Not Ready To Make Nice" was their last single to chart, peaking at No. 4.

While Robison wrote the song about a soldier in the U.S. military serving during the Vietnam War, when The Chicks released the song, the US was right in the midst of sending soldiers to Iraq. In 2003, the band was on tour promoting the song when lead singer, Natalie Maines, told their London audience that she was ashamed of US President George W. Bush for his work in the 2003 Iraq invasion . Many country music radio stations in the US dropped the single.

Shortly after this event, Sheryl Crow released a version of the song in solidarity with The Chicks.

The trio released their latest album Gaslighter in 2020.

'Travelin' Soldier' Lyrics:

Two days past eighteen He was waiting for the bus in his army green Sat down in a booth in a cafe there Gave his order to a girl with a bow in her hair He's a little shy so she give him a smile So he said would you mind sittin' down for a while And talking to me, I'm feeling a little low She said I'm off in an hour and I know where we can go So they went down and they sat on the pier He said I bet you got a boyfriend but I don't care I got no one to send a letter to Would you mind if I sent one back here to you

So the letters came from an army camp In California then Vietnam And he told her of his heart It might be love and all of the things he was so scared of He said when it's getting kinda rough over here I think of that day sittin' down at the pier And I close my eyes and see your pretty smile Don't worry but I won't be able to write for a while

One Friday night at a football game The Lord's Prayer said and the anthem sang A man said folks would you bow your head For the list of local Vietnam dead Crying all alone under the stands Was the piccolo player in the marching band And one name read and nobody really cared But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair

I cried Never gonna hold the hand of another guy Too young for him they told her Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier Our love will never end Waitin' for the soldier to come back again Never more to be alone when the letter says A soldier's coming home
