We are going to compare these two iconic bikes side by side and see what the difference is between each.

First, let’s compare their entry-level beginner-friendly cross-country options

Giant Talon 4 vs Trek Marlin 4 Gen 2

To summarize the above comparison table we can conclude that the Trek Marlin 4 is lighter, has more front suspension travel, a more aggressive handlebar positioning, and shorter chainstay, and wheelbase making for a faster handling bike that would be less stable.

While the Giant Talon 4 is a little heavier, has larger tire clearance, and has a more superior climbing gear for the steeper stuff. With a more panted feel with the longer chainstay and wheelbase. And a more upright and comfortable stack/reach ratio.

Okay, time to compare their mid-range cross-country bike options . This should be a rather fair battle. Comparing the Giant Talon 1 and the Trek Marlin. Again a 2022 Talon model and 2023 Marlin model, so keep that in mind.

The Talon seems to be lighter again, with the largest gear for descending fast and a longer chainstay.

Both bikes have the same tire clearance, the same quality components

However, the Marlin has superior climbing gear inches. Slightly more affordable price tag, and that longer trial for more relaxed steering and longer wheelbase. With the 20mm longer front suspension travel.

Let’s compare their higher-end cross-country models for these bikes. Most of the higher-end bikes for the Talon range are all electric mountain bikes. So we are comparing the 2022 Giant Talon 0 to the New Trek Marlin 8 Gen 3. (Not quite the fairest comparison but close enough.)

The Giant Talon 0 is a previous year’s model and they do not have a modern version. The Trek Marlin seems to be the most recommended choice. Not only that. The Marlin 8 has better quality groupset components and more superior climbing gear with a handy 17.5” which is great for mountain biking on those steep climbs. The trail on this Marlin is on the longer end for mountain bikes giving a slower, but calmer, steering response.

The Talon is lighter and more affordable but only if you can find one. The next best model is the Talon 1. You get a more upright riding position.

Both bikes have the same suspension travel and tire clearance.

Type & Purpose

As we can tell the Trek Marlin seems like the superior bike across the board when it comes to cross-country mountain biking applications, especially for climbing.

The Talon seems to shine if you want an electric cross-country bike as they have many options to choose from in this department.

And because of Giant’s limited standard Talon models, it makes the Marlin a better choice as they offer builds for all levels.

Trek Marlin vs Giant Talon – Making the right selection

Different bike brands could sometimes share similar features and benefits in their various models. This is the case of Trek Marlin and Giant Talon. We take a look at what’s important when making the right selection.

I came across the Giant Talon bike a few years ago when my cousin received it as a gift for her 17th birthday. I thought it was quite stellar and she even let me take a few trips around the block on it. It felt great!

It wasn’t planned but as it turns out, that one ride piqued my interest in cycling and I started to research more about the bike and others like it.

That’s how I came across the Trek Marlin. It appeared to be similar to the Talon with very minor tweaks on either side. So, I dug deeper and uncovered just how different they were.

What is the difference between Trek Marlin and Giant Talon?

Trek marlin vs giant talon – how do they compare.

Trek Marlin is built for racers but that doesn’t mean it cannot be used for casual rides to the park. On the Trek XL bike , the seat tube is at an angle of 73 degrees and it is paired with a head tube at a 69.5-degree angle and a 1159mm wheelbase. 

The Talon family has model 1,2 and 3 in their catalog. They all have an aluminum frame the difference lies in the size of their wheels and the value of some of their components. With Talon 3 you get 29†wheels while on the Talon 2 and 1 you get a 27.5†wheel.

Talon drives a hard bargain as a cross country bike with the 73.5-degree seat angle that maximizes your power to the pedals and keeps your tire traction firm. 

The head angle is slightly slacking at a 69-degree angle which is a bit more relaxed than on the Marlin. Reach and stack are either short or high across all models to give riders a more upright riding position.

Drivetrain 

Trek Marlin provides riders with a 2×9-speed drivetrain that is a combination of the Shimano Altus shifters, front derailleur, and the rear derailleur controlled by the Shimano Acera system. 

This setup is done like so because Acera is the better derailleur and because most of the shifting is handled by the rear, it makes more sense practically and economically to boost the rear and pair it with cheaper shifters.

The Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes are unbeatably the best control system any bike could have because they are great all year round regardless of the season.

Although the Bontrager Connection wheels are not tubeless-ready, they wrap snuggly around the Bontrager XR2Comp tires and are tied to aluminum quick-release hubs.

The Giant Talon offers a similar type and speed drivetrain, chainring and cassette set up. A difference in mechanism is obvious in Talon’s brake choice which is the TRP hydraulic disc brakes.  

In riding experience, this difference in the brand name is not quite significant other than the matter of lower value that TRP disc brakes are in the face of Shimano.

On the plus side, Talon’s Giant GXOV3 wheels are tubeless-ready but the Maxxis Ikon tires are not which means that if you want the full benefits of a tubeless set-up, you need to buy tubeless-compatible tires, the valves, and sealant to install successfully.

Riding Experience 

The aggressive geometry of the Marlin bike makes for a bike that does as you wish when riding hard. With the coil-spring fork and agile steering, this bike can conquer technical and extra rugged terrain. 

On sharp and sudden turns, the bike displays good tracking. However, because the wheels are not tubeless, the tires suffer from high tire pressure in extremely rocky terrain which makes it hard to hold the line.

Thankfully, there is a process you can follow to have the tubeless wheel option installed.

The Talon 2 seems to achieve a balance between a commuter, fitness, and experimental racing bike. With its light and fast tires, it breezes through dry trails and paths without any lag on paved roads. 

It is capable of steering sharply and responding quickly to pedal rotations and can see you through some rough and rocky terrain effortlessly.

Trek Marlin vs Giant Talon – A Comparison Overview

This bike is available in seven sizes starting from XS to XXL. It features two chainrings in compromise for the smaller number of gear cogs in the 9-speed drivetrain.

These chainrings create smaller jumps between gears which makes the bike perfect for beginners in the world of mountain biking.

The 22/36 gears on Marlin 7’s XS bike are easier to control and the 36×11 on the XXL are more expansive compared to other bike brands and they offer faster rides.

The Marlin bike brand offers two women-specific bikes featuring lower heights in standover, shorter cranks, short-reach brake levers, narrower handlebars, and saddles designed with women in mind.

This bike is hailed as a great all-terrain commuter, fitness, and experimental racing bike because of the 100mm fork, 2×9-speed drivetrain, and the tubeless-ready wheels.

The coil spring fork suspension offered by RockShox XC30 may not feel as refined as an air spring fork, and may also be heavier but it doesn’t weigh down the front end and you can go over high obstacles almost effortlessly.

There is a preload adjustment offered to make customizable changes to suit your specific riding style and weight. Another plus to the suspension features is the lockout lever that can be used to turn suspension on or off based on the terrain.

Verdict: So, which is better – Trek Marlin or Giant Talon?

The  Giant Talon  is better than the Trek Marlin. The Giant Talon takes the biscuit Partly because it offers more features and benefits in terms of the quick-release levers, gear indicators, and the option to customize and upgrade parts of it.

Another large factor that led to this conclusion is the ability of the bike to fit the needs of various types of cyclists and their riding styles.

Although Trek Marlin drives a hard bargain, they don’t elicit as much excitement as the Talon.

Is the trek Marlin a good gift for my 13-year-old son?

Unless your child weighs more than 150 pounds, I would discourage you from making that purchase.  This is because the RockShox Suspension on the Trek Marlin is spring-coil which your child is not heavy enough to weigh down. This will create vigorous bounce on the front wheel and lead to discouragement because he won’t get to use it out on the rugged terrain.

This will slow you down and tire you out more quickly if you do this for long enough. Suspensions that can’t be locked are great when going downhill to absorb the harsh and fast bumps but will work against you when trying to climb up hills or move faster.

Suspension forks lockouts make mountain bikes more versatile to handle all types or riding. The Marlin 6 and the Talon 2 both have suspension fork lockouts.

Front suspension with 80-100mm

The more travel a suspension fork has the better it is able to absorb harsher bumps on the trail. Bikes that come in sizes extra small or small will sometimes come with 80mm of travel to compensate for the smaller bike size to keep the proportions correct.  The Giant Talon 2 and the Trek Marlin 6 both have 100mm travel suspension forks. This reduces to 80mm travel suspension forks for the smallest sizes.

Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Both the Talon 2 and the Marlin 6 have hydraulic disc brakes. When going down hill on rough terrain, you may come across unexpected obstacles and need to stop and stop quickly. Hydraulic brakes will let you do just that and with minimal force required when applying the brake levers to bring you to a stop. Do not go near a mountain bike for serious trail riding that doesn’t have hydraulic brakes. This is an expected standard for mountain bikes in this price range and if you are being offered brakes any worse than that walk away.

Now that we’ve got that out the way lets get into the meat of the matter. Choosing either the Giant Talon 2 vs Trek Marlin 6 as a best buy for a beginner mountain biker.

Climbing and descending performance – talon vs marlin.

The Trek Marlin 6 will be better at climbing up hills than the Giant Talon 2 will. This is due to the flatter style handlebars on the Trek Marlin 6 over the Giants. They allow you to shift your weight further forward towards the front wheel.  Doing this gets you improved positioning  and more front wheel traction to power up those steep climbs. This also translates to a faster riding position when on flat surfaces .

The Giant Talon 2 excels as a bike when it comes to descending performance.  Thanks to its rising handle bars you’ll have more stability and confidence when riding descending trails . The frame design also improves downhill performance, as the angle of the head tube also gives it improved stability downhill over the marlin 6.

Riding in Different Conditions  – Talon 2 vs Marlin 6

The Marlin 6 uses the Bontrager XR2 tires . These are great for grip in dryer conditions on all types of trail and mountain terrains especially  looser dirt roads. In wet, muddy conditions it can sometimes struggle for grip. This can be explained by the smaller tire width of 2.2 that offers more speed in exchange for slightly less grip .

The Talon 2 uses Maxxis Rekon tires. These are a great all around tires that  performs well in all but the most extreme conditions. Maxxis are one of the most favoured  and trusted tire brands amongst mountain bikers. The 2.4 width tires inspire confidence with increased grip but will slow the bike down slightly with a bigger traction area.  The Talon 2 gives you a choice of either 29 of 27.5 tire size. For more speed and obstacle rollover ability go with size 29.  For more manoeuvrability and a lower centre of gravity  go with the size 27.5.

Usability and Comfort – Talon 2 vs Marlin 6

The Trek Marlin 6 makes a different frame for the extra small and small bikes sizes. The top part of the frame has a curve to allow easier access onto the seat to make getting on and off the bike a breeze. This may not sound like a big deal, but if you ride a bike long enough the minor annoyances such as having a hard time getting onto the seat of the bike to start riding will soon start to drive you crazy. In no time you’ll be ready to get rid of the bike for something else.

Both the Talon 2 and the Marlin 6 have a 2 x 8  drivetrain giving you 16 gears in total, more than enough to find the perfect pedalling speed for every situation.

The Giant Talon 2 has internal dropper post routing. This means if you ever want to upgrade your bike with a dropper seat post in the future then Giant this upgrade  much easier. The internal routing allows you to avoid unsightly external cables along the frame, keeping your bike looking sleek.

Styles of Riding – Talon 2 vs Marlin 6

Trek comes out on top for longer rides with a mix of climbing, downhill, and flat terrains. Thanks to the combination of the flat handle bars, head tube angle and seat tube angle puts you in a better position for putting the power down effectively while riding all  types of terrain. The neutral seat angle puts you in good position especially when primarily seated on the saddle for long periods.  The bike will have faster steering and give you more control when climbing uphill. Treks frame has better standover numbers  which implies that the frame won’t get in your way when your out of the saddle.

The Talon comes out on top  as a bike for single track trail and downhill riding. This is due in part to the favourable combination of rising handlebars, headtube and seat tube angle. This combination is geared for those quick uphill climbs to get to the downhill trail rides. The  headtube angle and rising handle bars will give you more stability and confidence to attack descents.

Its best to keep it simple and know that most big brand manufacturers have been in the market for years. Amongst them there really are no ‘bad’ bikes being made as they would have been made obsolete years ago.

There are subtle differences between the Giant Talon 2 vs Trek Marlin 6 however the best bike for you is the one that will make you get up, go out, and ride as much as possible. So not matter which one you go with or why the end goal is to get out there and have a blast on you new bike.

Giant Talon Review

One of the most popular hardtail mountain bikes in recent years has been the Giant Talon. In 2022, Giant has released three models of Talon bike. In this Giant Talon review I’ll cover all three models, as well as comparing the Talon to other popular hardtail mountain bike options.

2022 Giant Talon 4

The 2022 Giant Talon 4 is the entry level model, and has a $600 price tag. The front fork is an SR Suntour XCE, which is the same fork many entry level hardtail mountain bikes come with. It’s a decent fork for a beginner mountain biker. Durability of the fork is questionable. I’ve yet to have one last more than one riding season for an every weekend mountain biker.

Talon 4 owners have the option of 27.5 or 29er wheels. If you opt for the S or XS frame size you get 27.5 inch wheels with 80mm of travel in the front fork. Bikes equipped with 29 inch wheels have 100mm of travel.

The groupset that comes on Talon 4 is one of the most underrated in mountain biking. The microSHIFT components provide fast and reliable shifting out of the box. If your Talon starts jumping gears and acting up while riding, a quick and easy fix is to add a chain tensioner or chain guide. It is easy to install, and simply put, chain tensioners work great.

2022 Giant Talon 2

The 2022 Giant Talon 2 is the mid-range offering. It has a $750 price tag. Upgrades over the Talon 4 include an upgrade to the groupset. It still a microSHIFT group, but it’s an upgrade to their Advent series. That gets you even faster shifting, added reliability and lighter weight.

Unfortunately, the Talon 2 is still equipped with the SR Suntour XCE front fork. SR Suntour has an upgrade program on their forks. It’s something worth looking into in the future. The XCE is a great fork to get started on but as your skills improve, and you ride more aggressively, the fork wears down quickly.

2022 Giant Talon 1

The 2022 Giant Talon 1 is a solid valid. The price tag is $980, which is $130 more than the comparably equipped Trek Marlin 6. The key features on this bike are it’s Shimano Deore groupset, 100mm travel SXC32-2 RL air spring fork, and a progressive geometry that fits both 27.5 and 29 inch wheels. Frame sizes small and extra small have 80mm of travel in the fork.

Shimano Deore is a mid-range groupset. The built-in clutch that comes on the Deore rear derailleur keeps tension on the chain so you can shift when needed, even if you are riding through the chunky stuff. The 2022 Talon 1 comes with a 1×10 drivetrain offering plenty of range from top to bottom.

Trek Marlin vs Talon

Much like the Marlin, the Talon is made for XC riding, but it makes a great hardtail trail bike too. The front fork on the Talon is an upgrade over the Trek Marlin’s SR Suntour, but it is still the weak point on this bike. For the extra $130 it would make more sense to buy the Marlin and use your money saved to upgrade the fork to a Rockshox Recon RL.

In conclusion, the Giant Talon is a great hardtail mountain bike. It is a great value for a mountain bike with a 1X drivetrain and built-in clutch in the rear derailleur. Both the Marlin and Talon, as well as the Specialized Rockhopper, are great hardtail bikes with options at or under $1,000. For the money, Trek Marlin is the best value in the bunch, but Giant is not far behind.

Giant Talon 3 vs Trek Marlin 5 ??

Hi Guys, I'm very new to MTB and want to buy one bike small size. I've two options Giant Talon3 and Trek Marlin 5 but I'm not sure which one to buy. Please advise which would be a good choice. I need a bike just for exercise or recreational purposes. Thanks  

Don't pay attention to what he posted. There is a very large discussion regarding the Talon. Could you do better, yes could you do worse big time. You are new to biking so either or will be a great start. I have a heavily upgraded 2018 Talon and a 2020 Trance 2. The Talon was the push that I needed to get me back into the game. I have no regrets of owning that bike other than I should have just bought the Talon1 off the bat and not upgrade my Talon 3. The big downfall with the bikes is that they most likely come with spring loaded forks. If you can stretch you cash a bit more, buy one with an air fork. If you can't buy which ever you prefer the feel of and just ride it. That way if for some reason you don't like the activity it's not much of a loss. If you do like it, you can upgrade your parts and learn about mechanics while you are doing it or you can sell or pass down your bike and buy yourself a better bike. Out of the two I much prefer the look and feel of the Talon. Just remember that they are xc bikes and not really made for hardcore trail riding. That's not to say you can't take them there either. From your avatar, I see you have a new-newish born been there and funds can be tighter for fun so again either bike is not a bad choice. I'd buy the Talon again over the Trek.  

My only thought is if you could save just a little more and get the Talon 1. The 1x drivetrain and air fork will be game changers. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk  

Neither of them are really MTB. More MTB-shaped objects (MTBSO). Better save up for better, or go used and build up over time. I think the Marlin has a freewheel, so that is even worse. Giant usually has a better value for the money. The giant seems to have a tiny bit better geometry. So if we lived in the World with only these 2 options, Giant. Looking at these, I'm happy we live in a World with better options.

But the 21 available gears and SR Suntour front suspension system combine for a smooth, even ride on just about any rough terrain.

The only drawback is that some assembly is required upon receiving the bike if you opt to have it shipped. Still, this is easily one of the best value mountain bikes under $1,000 on the market right now.

Cannondale Trail 8

Cannondale's Trail 8 Bike is available at a price similar to the REI DRT 1.1. With many similar advantages, such as an aluminum frame and similar tire sizes, though larger sizes of the bike feature 29-inch tires, this mountain-ready bike is quite competitive. Many of the components come from the same vendors, guaranteeing a great build.

The only ways in which the REI Co-op bike wins out is that the Cannondale has slimmer tires that are less suited to gravel and less travel in the suspension system. The fork is just 75 mm compared to the Co-op bike's 100 mm. So if you take major drops, the ride might not be as smooth. But, with a sub-$500 sale price, this is another incredible value mountain bike, especially one branded with the legendary Cannondale name.

Giant 2021 ATX

The Giant 2021 ATX mountain bike is ideal for those looking dip their toe in the off-road waters. The mountain bike-style ride is equipped with an aluminum frame and 26-inch to 27.5-inch tires, depending on your bike size.

From the premium A1 aluminum frame to the SR SunTour XCM fork, this is a bike built for screaming down singletracks.

Outfitted with Shimano hydraulic brakes and a MicroSHIFT 1x9 drivetrain, this bike will handle beautifully and give you everything you need to conquer steep climbs while confidently tackling steep descents. Plus, it's pretty damn handsome to boot.

Trek Marlin 7 (Gen 2)
