Spain walking tours
Small group walking tours to spain.
To many, holidays in Spain evoke images of sun, sea and sangria; yet this fascinating country is a treasure trove of culture and natural beauty, and as such lends itself to fantastic walking and trekking adventures. Diverse scenery awaits visitors keen to explore this remarkable country on foot, not just on the mainland but also off shore on the Balearic and Canary islands.
Mainland Spain boasts deep valleys and limestone peaks in the northern ranges. Spain’s mountain ranges are in fact the second highest in Europe after Switzerland. The impressive Pyrenees form a natural border between Spain, France and Andorra, while the more intimate, yet equally dramatic, Picos de Europa remain Spain’s best kept secret. Those with a love of gastronomy and wine will be rewarded after a busy day on foot – taste fine wines from various regions or sample the local delicacies of the Basque country or Catalunya.

Explore Northern Spain in this small group Spanish walking tour
Discover the flourishing culture of regions such as Asturias, Cantabria & the Basque Country, as well as taking part in guided tours of Oviedo, Santander, Bilbao and San Sebastian, with some easy walking in the Picos de Europa Mountains.
There is something about Northern Spain. You sit down at a table in the crisp sunshine, the waiter comes and pours country cider from a green bottle at arm’s length above his head, down into a pint glass held at his hip to oxygenate the liquid, giving it the fresh ‘zang’ you will experience nowhere else.
A local woman on the next table will ask you where you are from. Prawns will arrive dripping in garlic, then squid sizzling in virgin olive oil. The bread breaks in your hand like tectonic plates, the blue cheese smells like muertos, the Rioja wine adds a twinkle to your eye. Somehow just having lunch becomes a religious experience.
To your left the hazy peaks of the Picos rise up shimmering in the distance, to your right the Cantabrian Sea crashes against rocky coast in sprays of salt that reach up to the fertile campo laden with cows and horses. Squat, Japanese-looking terracotta-roofed Horreos abound, the wooden structures suspended above the ground on stone stilts, the traditional manner of storing maize throughout the snowy winter.

About the Picos de Europa
A little-known gem of a mountain range in Northern Spain, the Picos de Europa (‘Peaks of Europe’) spread for 20km across the stunning autonomous regions of Asturias, Cantabria, Castile and León, leading down to the emerald green coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. They offer some of the best hiking in Spain.
One of the first National Parks to be founded in Europe, the limestone peaks reach up to 2,600m where eagles and lammergeiers soar, from deep valleys and verdant pastures dotted with delightful rural villages and grazing animals. A widely accepted origin for the name is that they were the first sight of Europe for ships arriving from the Americas, and they remain deeply impressive as ever, yet somehow overlooked by mainstream tourism.
This adventure celebrates the very best of Northern Spain by exploring the culture and charm of the three neighbouring but contrasting regions of Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country. These historic kingdoms offer the traveller a wealth of experiences; from the wild beauty of the Picos de Europa mountains, to the striking Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, the mouth watering pintxos in San Sebastian, to the famous Basilica at Covadonga steeped in the history of the Reconquista of King Pelayo against the Moors from the South.
Striking a perfect balance of gentle walking in foothills and along the coast, enjoying informative guided city tours and exploring key sites in the notable towns of Oviedo, Santander, Bilbao and San Sebastian, this fully guided holiday with an English speaking local guide and private transfers will tell you the story of Northern Spain, narrated through its fascinating culture and traditions.
Day 1: Arrival into Bilbao
4 star hotel
Arrive into Bilbao and be met and transferred to our hotel in Santillana del Mar. Nestled amid picturesque landscapes, it’s renowned as one of Spain’s most stunning destinations.
Situated on the northern route of the Pilgrim's Road to Santiago de Compostela, Santillana del Mar is a beautiful medieval town which was developed around the collegiate church of Santa María. Its various defence towers and Renaissance palaces make Santillana one of the most important historical areas of Cantabria.
Depending on your arrival time, freshen up, relax or explore Santillana del Mar independently before meeting your English-speaking Spanish guide in the evening, and enjoying a briefing, a welcome drink of local cider and your first traditional Spanish dinner of the trip. If you need some ideas on what to do on your first afternoon, don't hesitate to ask!
Overnight : Hotel Altamira
Please note for 2025 departures, your first night is spent in Bilbao. After arriving into Bilbao you will be transferred to your hotel to check in. Meet your English speaking guide for your welcome briefing, and enjoy your first Spanish evening meal.
Overnight: Hotel Barceló Bilbao Nervión **** or Hotel Hesperia****
Day 2: Cantabrian Highlights
Today we explore some of the highlights of the autonomous region of Cantabria, whose delights are disproportionate to its size, which is small!
Firstly, we will explore the magnificent Santillana del Mar. The Collegiate Church & Cloisters of Santa Juliana, one of the most attractive examples of Romanesque, has origins dating back to 870, although the buildings visible today date back to the C12th. Also not to be missed is a chance to visit the NeoCave of Altamira; an exact reproduction of the cave of Altamira as it was between 13,000 & 22,000 years ago, with its well known bison cave paintings.
Then, we will move to Comillas, a small township in the autonomous community of Cantabria. From the second half of the 19th century, the Spanish royal family started spending their summers in Comillas, as a result, Comillas left an imprint of architectural relics such as palaces and monuments designed by renowned Catalan artists in particular, Gaudí or Doménech i Montaner. Besides this, there are many notable medieval and baroque buildings.
Finally, we will go to the lovely fisherman’s town of San Vicente de la Barquera. After lunch we head to our final destination in Espinama, crossing the stunning La Hermida Gorge.
Overnight: Hostal Remoña
Day 3: Excursion to Potes, Fuente De & Santa Toribio de Liebana Monastery
Guest house
After breakfast, we head into the heart of the mountains (150mins), to the Fuente De cable car, for a fabulous and scenic ascent up more than 800m, to the Fuente de Glacier. At the top, we breathe in the stunning views and take a short tour to discover the area.
Continuing our journey we visit the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liebana, one of just 5 Christian sites (Rome, Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela & Caravaca de la Cruz) that has the privilege of missing perpetual indulgences; effectively a way of reducing the amount of punishment that one has to undergo for sins. It is also famous for the Lignam Crucis (wood of Jesus' cross) & illustrated religious manuscripts: the first Spanish Codice of the Beato de la Liebana.
This afternoon we visit a liquor winery to see how the locally famed ' Orujo de Potes '; a grape-based spirit (40% alcohol!) is manufactured, before returning to familiar Hostal Remoña.
Day 4: Panoramic Tour of the Iconic Peak Naranjo de Bulnes, Cabrales Cheese & the Town of Sotres
The Central Massif of the Picos de Europa, and the National Park with the iconic Naranjo de Bulnes , beckons today. We will make a stop at the "Pozo de la Oración" to see the iconic peak of the National Park to learn about the characteristics of the massive limestone peak and the stories surrounding it.
We continue to Poncebos where the majestic Cares Gorge begins, and then we drive to the town of Sotres. We will set out on a gentle walk at Collado de La Caballar , offering beautiful views of the main summits of the Massif. After the walk, we will go to Arenas de Cabrales for lunch.
Our destination for this evening is Llanes. Our journey there (2hr) takes us through some stunning scenery .
Overnight: Hotel Paraíso or Hotel La Finca La Mansión
Day 5: Covadonga Lakes Circular Route
The walk starts from Lake Ercina in the heart of the Picos de Europa mountain range and heads up to the top of La Reblagas and then on to the beautiful Bricial Majada. A Majada is a high mountain meadow where horses, sheep or other animals are put out to pasture during the mild summer months.
The route then continues towards the Vega de Enol Majada, crossing a beautiful beech forest, where we will stop to eat with spectacular views of “Las Peñas Santas”. The route continues until Lake Enol. In the afternoon, we will stop in Covadonga to visit the church and the “Saint Cave”, where we can see the Virgin of Covadonga. We also do a stop in Ribadesella, a lovely small town on the coast.
Tonight we head back to Llanes for the night and to enjoy dinner.
Overnight: Hotel Paraíso or Hotel Finca La Mansión
Day 6: Vist to FAPAS & Excursion to Oviedo, capital of Asturias
Today, we will do a visit to FAPAS, the most important and old Association to biodiversity & nature conservation in Asturias. They will explain their works in favour of the Cantabrian beard. Then, we will move t o Oviedo, the capital of Asturias.
It is a stylish city with colourful architecture and bustling markets and squares, located on 2 pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. As such, the cathedral is visited by those setting out on both the Camino Primitivo , for which Oviedo is the starting point, as well as the Camino del Norte , who pass through Oviedo en route from Sanit Jean de Luz to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.
The Cathedral boasts a 9th-century UNESCO world heritage chapel housing a piece of cloth said to have been placed around Jesus' head after his death. We also enjoy the church of Santa Maria del Naranjo perched high above the city on the hilltop of Monte Naranco: a fine example of pre-Romanesque architecture.
There is some free time today to wander the streets of pedestrianised downtown Oviedo and enjoy lunch in one of the many restaurants. Asturias is famous for its cider (sidra) and the city is packed with lively ' sidrerias ', where you can enjoy the speciality. We will also take a drive down to the coast to visit the delightful town of Cudillero - famous for it's incredible restaurants and higgledy-piggledy architecture.
We return to Llanes for our final night and dinner at our hotel.
Day 7: Explore Santander
After breakfast, we enjoy the highlights of Santander, the capital of the autonomous community of Cantabria. Off the main tourist routes, it is a city often overlooked by international visitors, though popular with Spanish visitors. It has a stunning natural setting, with urban beaches, and meandering peninsulas, and a slower pace than you would expect for a capital city.
We visit the golden sands of Sardinero Beach, with crystal clear waters, and the Magdalena Palace set within 24 hectares of the Magdalena Peninsula. The former royal palace has opulent interiors and expansive gardens and was no doubt built here, in the 20th century, for its incredible views overlooking the Isla de Mouro and Bay of Santander. We also visit Santander Cathedral unusually consisting of 2 gothic churches, one above the other, constructed in the 13th & 14th centuries respectively. For a small fee, you can head up to the bell tower for incredible views of the surrounding area.
This afternoon we enjoy a leisurely boat trip to explore the Bay of Santander - a wonderful way to appreciate the coastline from a new perspective, before crossing into our 3rd region; Basque Country, and to Bilbao (1hr 15m), another exciting and under appreciated Northern Spanish city.
Overnight : Hotel Barceló Bilbao Nervión or or Hotel Hesperia
Day 8: Bilbao and surroundings
After breakfast, we head to the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, presents an alluring and futuristic space for the mix of modern & contemporary art it houses and is not to be missed.
There is a lot to pack into today, and it's from one 'out of this world' experience to another. Next up is San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, an islet on the coast of Biscay used by Game of Thrones in Season 7 to represent Dragonstone. The word gaztelugatxe [gastelugatse] comes from the Basque gaztelu , meaning 'castle' and atx , meaning 'rock'; together forming 'the rock castle'.The rock of Gaztelugatxe is a small island off the coast, reached by a man-made stone bridge leading to a narrow path with a mere 241 steps! Impressive and wild, set against the backdrop of the sea, a small church, over a century old, and dedicated to St John the Baptist, perches atop the rock.
In the afternoon, on the way back to Bilbao, we visit the lovely Basque town of Bermeo, famous for the fantastic surf.
Overnight : Hotel Barceló Bilbao Nervión or Hotel Hesperia
Day 9: Zumaia Coast
Today, for those that would like to walk and enjoy the coastal air, we walk the well established and stunning 'Flysch' coastal pathway (around 8km at a steady pace). This route is a section of the GR 121 - also known as the Tour of Guipúzcoa - a walking route around the perimeter of the stunning Basque province, stretching over 300 kilometres (186 mi).
For those that are not so keen on the walk, you have the option to head straight to Zumaia and explore / relax until the rest of the group joins you. You may also fancy a trip to the coastal town of Zarautz, known for its 2.5km sandy beach, restaurants and shops - maybe time for a spot of souvenir shopping?
Overnight : Hotel Barceló Costa Vasca or Sercotel Hotel Europa
Day 10: Explore San Sebastian
Last, but definitely not least, the fantastic city of San Sebastian awaits us today. We enjoy a guided walking tour around the main sites of the city including the Plaza de la Constituzion with its majestic Town Hall, Old Town ( La Parte Vieja ), and fishing port at the foot of the Urgull Mountain.
We end the morning with a private 'pintxos' tour (pronounced 'pinchos' , and meaning 'tapas' ), accompanied by a specialist in Basque gastronomic culture. After the tapas, enjoy the afternoon at your leisure; we are staying in San Sebastian tonight.
Day 11: Departure
Your adventure has come to an end - it must be time to plan your next holiday! Enjoy breakfast before your transfer to Bilbao for your journey home.

We also invite our clients to match this with an optional additional £30 for another 15 trees to be planted to help compensate for the carbon footprint of their international flights.

Wherever we can we will choose smaller, more characterful, individual hotels, but in areas where tourism is still developing, or in remote areas (like the mountains), we may not have a wide range of options. An aspect of our adventures is to escape the ‘trappings’ of modern Western lifestyles and to experience new things with are exciting and memorable and reflects the countries we are visiting.
Where hotels and refuges are fully booked or unavailable, we will use an alternative of a similar standard, and equally well situated. We will provide you with an accurate list of accommodation to leave with relatives, prior to departure on your adventure.
Unless you have booked a single room (where they are available) and paid the single room supplement for those nights, you will be sharing a twin room with another client (of the same gender).

You also need to be comfortable on coastal paths which may be narrow or uneven and naturally will include some gradient changes, in order to enjoy the rural and wildlife aspects of the adventure. Any walking is at the natural pace of the group, with regular stops and there is an alternative option if you are not wanting to join the 8km walk on Day 9.

Travel by Ferry
Although the most timely way to get to this area of Northern Spain is to use a low cost airline, there is much joy to be found in incorporating your travel into your adventure and choosing the lower carbon footprint option of the ferry. You can travel to Bilbao from Portsmouth (23hrs 45mins), with Brittany Ferries. An added bonus to this form of travel is the opportunity to spot whales and dolphins in the Bay of Biscay!

All of our trips involve a level of general activity so are designed for people who are in good health, enjoy the outdoors, and have a taste for adventure and some level of fitness. As will be clear from our destinations, the climate (and altitude) may be different to that which you are used to, so please take this into consideration when choosing the most suitable holiday.
Please read our Adventure Itinerary & Essential Information for more information and don't hesitate to contact us if you would like to chat through whether you have found a suitable adventure for you.
Grade 1-3: Entry Level
You need to be in good physical health to enjoy your active holiday, but you don’t need to be an experienced hiker. These itineraries offer a mix of sightseeing and easier walking for around 2-4hrs a day, with the emphasis on sights and cultural experiences.
Walks will be well marked or on defined pathways, and often around sites of interest. The expected amount of descent/ascent will depend on the landscapes of the destination, but will not exceed 400m/day, and will often be much less. Walks are at low altitude (below 3000m).
You will not be required to carry more than a day sack with water and essentials. Ensure you are aware of the weather conditions likely in the destination you are visiting and have a pair of comfortable and worn in walking shoes/boots.
Grades 4-6: Intermediate
You need to have a good level of fitness and be a regular walker for these adventures, with ideally some trekking experience. You can expect to be walking for 3-6 hours per day, not including rest stops, normally on good trail paths but with some uneven surfaces at times.
You will not be required to carry more than a day sack. You may be walking in more challenging temperatures. You will generally be walking at low altitude (below 3000m) but may walk at altitudes up to 4000m. The amount of ascent could be up to 800m in a day but will frequently be less. You may walk on consecutive days.
Ensure you are aware of the weather conditions likely in the destination you are visiting and have suitable clothing for this adventure.
Grades 7-9: Challenging
You need to have a good level of fitness with previous experience of trekking. Extra training before your trip will ensure that you get the most out of your adventure. Areas will be remote and terrain uneven.
Expect to walk for 5 – 8 hours a day, not including breaks, with some very steep ascents and descents. You will be walking at altitude (over 3000m but not higher than 5000m).
Ensure you are aware of the weather conditions likely in the destination you are visiting and have suitable equipment/clothing for this adventure (see the packing list for your adventure).

Walking Tours in Spain
Our philosophy is simple - to get out of the cities and into the countryside where you can discover the charm and beauty of the Spanish regions such as Andalusia, Pays-Basque, Ainhoa, Santiago de Compostela, the Pyrenees and the Balearic Islands. Walking with a small, like minded group is the best way to explore them. It is important to have time to "smell the roses", not to rush through but to soak up the atmosphere. We are great believers that the journey is what matters, not the destination! All our holidays in Spain are guided - we are not there to overload you with facts and figures but discreetly share with you the wonderful places we have discovered during our "journey" .

It was quite an experience. Our tour guide Vivian was phenomenal. She was always checking on all members of the group to make sure we were alright. The only glitch occurred when our accomodations were in a spot where their restaurant had burned down and we were given the option of ordering pizza or walking into town for dinner. Mind you, this was at the end of a very long hike and a further walk into town was the last thing any of us needed. This was an error on the part of the tour company especially knowing ahead of time that the restaurant had burned down and no alternate accomodations were made. Other than that, everything was wonderful and would use Explore again. Thanks again Vivian, you made it an enjoyable experience.

Camino de Santiago Trek
What a wonderful way to enjoy the Spanish country's and some of its religious history that walk the last 130km of the Camino. It will not always be easy (hot humid days increase the risk of blisters) but the experience is worth every ouchie. The towns, accommodation and people are generally amazing even if the quality of food is a bit uneven until you get to Santiago. But food and drink incredibly cheap. Brilliantly organised and led by our Spanish guide David who went above and beyond to ensure we all had a memento experience. Definitely to be recommended to everyone with the capacity to have a decent walk

Camino - Leon to Santiago
My Camino experience was wonderful and my first type of adventure experience. I am 67 and walked the Camino on my own from León to Santiago . I never felt alone in my walks during these days as Tourradar had my itinerary, meals, lodging so well arranged. They provided me with pretrip details as well as Camino background information. From start to finish this tour company was first rate. I am home now and thinking of my next adventure!

Cycling the Camino de Santiago - Roncesvalles to Santiago
We have just completed cycling the Camino de Santiago (Roncesvalles to Santiago) with "ExperiencePlus!" bike tours. It was truly memorable experience. Our guides brought a myriad of talents, language skills and good humour to our trip. The "plus" was, in large part, the cultural component. Thanks to the knowledge of our guides and their eagerness to share their love of the Camino, we gained an appreciation of the history of the route and the pilgrims (past and present) who have made the journey. On a practical note, the accommodation was the best available - keeping in mind that this is a 'pilgrim's route. This comment is not meant as a negative . All of the accommodation provided a welcome respite after a long day of cycling. The food and wine (chosen by our guides) were wonderful and a provided delightful introduction to the cuisine of northern Spain. On a more practical note, the bicycles and van support (including water and snacks en route) were excellent. The guides went "above and beyond" to ensure that we had no difficulty in moving forward! The "chalk arrows" were an added bonus - all we had to do was concentrate on cycling and the breathtaking scenery. This was our sixth trip with ExperiencePlus!. We are looking forward to our seventh.
Best of the Spanish Camino
Great tour, excellent support. Fantastic tour leader and driver (Emilio) - very attentive to individual needs and both went beyond the call of duty to assist people in need. The itinerary allowed you to get a real feel for the Camino, without having to walk tedious distances through boring exposed countryside or industrial areas on the outskirts of towns. Accommodation was also varied, from 4 star in larger towns, to no star in a rural setting (but the views and atmosphere were sufficient to outweigh any perceived disadvantage and the room had all basic facilities, whilst the food was terrific). I don't know why the hotel in Santiago only has 2 stars: there may have been only basic body gel and shampoo, but the rooms were very spacious, it had a 24/7 dining area where you could get tea/coffee/juice/water and fruit, or make a sandwich, which was fantastic for early departures or just after a long day. The staff on reception were also very helpful.
Camino de Santiago Walking Experience 7D/6N (from Sarria)
Would definitely use again. They did everything they said they would do and baggage and rooms were handled very well. No problems
Camino De Santiago - The Way to Santiago (The last 115KM)
What people love about camino de santiago tours.
Our guide got us safely to Santiago which was a big part of his job. We had a nice group of people on our tour. The leader had good recommendations for restaurants and city tours. However, the guide was very impatient with me when my backpack was missing, and I only found my pack due to my air tags. Gadventures was responsible for moving my pack during the day so I am not sure about the reason for the impatience.
Everything was amazing! Our group leader really took care of us,from making sure we were all ok to getting us to some of the greatest places to stop for break or lunch and supper. She made sure we all could keep up & she was always smiling . I would definitely do this tour again !
Matched me with G tours. Everyone followed up, made changes as needed & worked well together.

'Total Basque Mountain Experience' Walking Holidays in the Pyrenees
In the Channel 5 documentary, 'The Pyrenees with Michael Portillo', I introduce Michael to the fairytale landscapes of the Pyrenees. My home lies in the hills above the mountain villages of Ituren and Zubieta (where we flimed). The Basques love their land, and these traditional - almost medieval - landscapes, offer a walkers' paradise and fascinating vignettes of Basque daily life. Our Total Basque Mountain Experience Walking Weeks are perfect for walkers of most levels. They offer guests access to over 10 self-guided circular walks, mapped from the farmhouse door and are studded with cultural events, stories and guided expeditions backstage into all things Basque .
Spanish Immersion Courses for Adults
Voted one of the 'top ten learning holidays worldwide' by the Sunday Times (2021) our Spanish immersion courses have been welcoming guests for the past 20 years. These total immersion Spanish courses combine beautiful, relaxed walks through this ideal countryside with round-the-clock Spanish conversation with locals, friends, teachers and neighbours. There is also daily formal tuition every afternoon on the terrace. These eclectic, lively 'house-party' styled Spanish immersion weeks combine behind-the-scenes forays into the local culture and gastronomy, and unite intrigu ing local characters with their stories. With just 5 bedrooms at our farmhouse, these small, personal and relaxed weeks are ideal for discerning adults who love languages, people and landscapes.
Smuggling & Resistance One-day Tours The World War II COMET Line
The Comet Line was a famous resistance network operating between 1941 and 1944 during World War II. It was the brainchild of a Belgian nurse, André de Jong (Dédée) who cared for Allied soldiers and pilots stranded behind enemy lines . In total about 800 pilots, soldiers and resistance workers were guided to safety over the Basque Pyrenees with the help of the local Basque farmers, smugglers and guides on both sides of the border - m any of them women and children. Help us keep this amazing story of human bravery alive by joining one of our tours to visit the safe houses, ravines and border crossings.
Basque Mountain Experience - One-day Tour for Groups
This one-day immersion programme on the Basque Culture picks up the thread of the recent Channel 5 documentary 'In the Pyrenees with Michael Portillo' - where I acted as his guide to the Basque mountain c ulture of the Pyrenees.
During this tour, we visit the traditional Basque village of Zubieta (which featured in episode one), and explore the culture, history, pagan mythology and identity of these enigmatic Basque mountain people: lovers of their land, and guardians of their unique and fascinating language, Euskara (Basque).
Through a series of gentle village and mountain walks into the foothills of the Basque Pyrenees, we explore the landscapes and villages of this extremely traditional area , and complete the day sampling their world-famous Basque cuisine and wines in a little-known Michelin-recommended restaurant hidden in the hills.

Exclusive, Unique, Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience
NONE of our holidays is a Lego-like package of walks + food + accommodation, but rather a totally integrated ‘experience’ of this amazing area. We run informal, open-house, personal (and personable) holidays where all our guests are made to feel part of the family. We like it this way.
We draw our support from a local team of cooks, historians, musicians, shepherds, teachers and guides who bring life, humour and integrity to every day, and stories and anecdotes to every path we walk. Here we travel in both distance and in depth.
Passion & Dedication
We love our work and are acutely aware that these cultural exchanges with our guests vastly enrich our lives.
Our ethos is relaxed and informal, the international house-party spirit is dynamic and fun and every meal and glass of wine is on the house (which seems the only civilised way to run a holiday!).
But do not be deceived, we are also a team of highly-focused professionals, passionately dedicated to all we do. Is there any reason why the two should not go hand in hand?
A friendly farmhouse in the Pyrenees and a relaxed home-from-home
Farmhouse life.
The farmhouse is situated in a tiny hamlet above the 'rival' villages of Ituren and Zubieta. It has just 5 en-suite guest rooms, each one with awe-inspiring views.
It is a relaxed and friendly place set amid landscaped gardens with comfy sofas, libraries of books and a fully-stocked kitchen, and our guests are invited to feel at home as soon as they arrive.
Lazy conversations on the terrace or over dinner are a constant source of inspiration and bonhomie.

Last Opportunity Tourism
Despite the Basques’ umbilical attachment to their land, this patchwork of neatly-tended fields and chestnut groves is slowly changing as younger generations look for more modern and less time-consuming occupations. We are lucky in my hamlet of Ameztia, (Ituren), that my neighbour’s son, Iñaki, has taken over the sheep farm and our lands remain in competent hands for the time being.
Nevertheless, there is no better time than now to experience these immaculately beautiful – Tolkienesque – landscapes of the Basque Pyrenees.
Georgina Howard
A language lover, teacher and writer, I first discovered the Basque Country with the help of an old Ford Escort called Fred, a Spanish-English dictionary, a pair of walking boots and a box of English tea bags. I grew up near Birmingham but spent many years in Copenhagen where finally my passion for languages, maps and mountains rebelled and drove me south! Just before leaving Denmark, I published my first book, 'Freedom to Choose' and - in many respects - the Pyrenean Experience put theory to practice. My memoir , ' In the Footsteps of Smugglers - My Life on a Basque Mountain', to be published in the UK and US by Bradt in summer 2024, pays homage to the amazing shepherds who have stood by me through thick and thin, dug my car out of ditches and helped me raise, simultaneously, my fledgling business and my (bossy) Basque daughter, Marion.
Today we host our house parties together with an amazing team of Spanish-Basque family and friends. Our lives here are closely entwined with the local population, and my neighbours are proud to share their culture with our guests.
A WORD OF WARNING: These holidays are not for everyone! I believe very much in carpa diem . These walking holidays in the Pyrenees are vaguely idiosyncratic - no day is ever the same. I prefer NOT to tie up the week with unnecessary timetables and schedules but to work spontaneously, deciding on the activities according to the weather, my guests' interests, and the friends, locals and festivals we encounter en route.

Discover the Alpujarras & Sierra Nevada
Tucked away in the south of Spain, in the center of Andalucía, lies another world. A world of soaring, snow clad peaks, sleepy white villages and deep valleys, far removed from the crowded beaches of the Costa del Sol. Relatively few foreign visitors to the region venture into the Sierra Nevada, especially in winter when snow normally lies over the mountains from December until May. It's a very special place.
This is our backyard!
Spanish Highs, Sierra Nevada
We offer a diverse selection of active holiday experiences, encompassing activities such as walking, hiking, trekking, scrambling, mountaineering, snowshoeing, and skiing. Our destinations include the picturesque Alpujarras, the towering Sierra Nevada mountain range (the highest in Western Europe, apart from the Alps), and other captivating locations within the remote sierras of Andalucia Province in southern Spain. Additionally, we organize regular expeditions to the awe-inspiring Southern Patagonian Icecap.
Join us on our thrilling adventures and make memories that will probably leave you questioning your life decisions.
Spain's Hidden Secret!
It is a very special place and there is tremendous scope here for those who prefer their mountains wild and dramatic! On clear days it is possible to view the coasts of North Africa some 200km away across the Mediterranean sea. It is a relatively small range of mountains (90km long by 35km wide) sat in the Granada province of Andalucía, Spain. The area provides great opportunities for all, from the high and wild mountains in winter, to the more gentle spanish walking found in the hills of the Alpujarras.
Where is Spain's Sierra Nevada located?
The Sierra Nevada is located near Granada in Southern Spain. It is not only one of Europe’s most southerly mountain ranges, but also contains the highest peaks in western Europe outside of the Alps. What it lacks in size it makes up for in altitude with over 25 peaks above 3000m. These include the highest point in western Europe outside the Alps, Mulhacén at 3482m.
Total flexibility
We provide customized trips to meet your specific timeline and preferences. The Sierra Nevada offers convenient accessibility, making it an ideal destination for impromptu getaways, weekend retreats, or brief respites. Its proximity to major airports and efficient motorway networks further enhance its appeal. With a wide range of offerings, there is guaranteed to be something that piques the interest of every individual.
Experience you can trust!
We offer meticulously-led, low impact activity holidays tailored for both individuals and groups. Accommodations include small local hotels, carefully-selected guarded and unguarded mountain refuges, as well as wild camps. We are dedicated to preserving the awe-inspiring and delicate wilderness, ensuring its pristine beauty remains unspoiled. Our guests benefit from our extensive knowledge and experience accumulated over two decades of guiding in the Sierra Nevada. Our team of local guides, comprised of individuals with firsthand understanding of the region, ensures an authentic and immersive experience for our guests.
Knowledge Base
Our Information Knowledge Base offers a wealth of resources pertaining to various topics such as pricing, self-guided support, accommodation options, mountain weather and conditions, route maps, mountain databases, huts and refuges, altitude sickness, avalanche dangers, equipment lists, gear rental, and general frequently asked questions. Feel free to access this comprehensive collection of information for any assistance or guidance you may require.
"Big shout out to Richard from the logistical team I used down here, Spanish Highs. The Sierra Nevada, how beautiful is that, it has a stark beauty to it. A lot of the guides that I work alongside in Europe have talked about the Sierra Nevada, looks really wild and remote, and it is. Good weather this time of year, generally, it's just had it's first dusting of snow and it ticked all the boxes, relatively easy to get to, covid friendly, and I will certainly be coming back, for sure. It's a really interesting, none aggressive, in terms of the hills are quite rolling but there's some fantastic ridge lines, scrambling with abseils and easy grade climbing, great food, great coffee and great climate. Yeah definitely be going back, it's a beautiful place. Thanks guys for everything. You guys have been magical on organising this trip."

Great Adventure
Brillant and well organised time spent with Spanish Highs climbing Mulhacen mountain and walking Ruta Medieval, Taha del Pitres. Filipe and Sean guided us up the mountain , and made us feel at ease, then Richard guided us through lovely Spanish villages and to beautiful waterfall's. We also got taken to a lovely restaurant after one of hikes for a beer and pizza. Would highly recommend.

Memorable hiking!
A fantastic few days spent with Spanish Highs climbing Mulhacen mountain and walking Ruta Medieval, Taha del Pitres whilst raising money for Guide Dogs UK. All areas were expertly guided with stunning views and several surprises such as mountain goats, waterfalls and the best beer and pizza we could wish for! Spanish Highs made a bespoke itinerary for us which ran like clockwork and was just what we wanted. The guides, Richard, Filipe and Sean were friendly, funny, knowledgeable and 100% professional. We’ll definitely be back for more walks with them soon

Walking holidays in Spain

Discover spain.
Macs Adventure has been running self guided walking holidays in Spain since 2008. As soon as we walked the Camino, we knew that Spain had so much to offer and we started to look for other areas to set up our style of holidays.
From humble beginnings, we now send over 2500 travellers every year to Spain, each of them finding their own adventure. We provide the freedom to choose your route, itinerary and travel companions and to discover Spain at your own pace.
We knew from experience how important it was to have amazing partners on the ground in Spain to deal with any issues that you might come across. We are proud to say that our Spanish team, suppliers and baggage handlers are outstanding and should you have the slightest issue, they will fall over themselves to help you out.
We offer a flexible, tailor-made experience that gets you in comfortable, friendly overnight accommodation in local B&Bs and guesthouses. We carry your bags to lighten your load so you can concentrate on simply enjoying the unique culture, food and scenery of the less-travelled parts of Spain. No hostels, no shared dorms, no heavy bags on your back, just the assurance that we have it all covered for you.
We want to showcase our expertise, by giving you all the resources you will ever need. In the planning stage, we have free guides, comprehensive videos and a host of staff with their own Spanish experience, waiting to answer your questions. On the route, we use high-quality digital mapping as well as the best maps and guidebooks to make sure you find your way.
We love Spain and our main aim is to make sure that you do too.
Temperatures in Spain typically don't dip too low, even in winter when the lows typically stay in the 40- to 50-degrees Fahrenheit range country-wide. Summers, on the other hand, can get really hot , with highs creeping into the low to mid-90s in some places. For this reason, we recommend visiting during the shoulder seasons in late spring/early summer (May or early June) or late summer (August to September, even October) to avoid the extreme heat.
If the hot summer months of July and August are the only time you can travel, consider visiting the north of Spain where temps don't soar quite as high (highs reaching upper 70s in the summer), such as Bilbao which is the starting point of the Camino del Norte .
Spring in Spain
If you are looking for warmth with fewer crowds this is a great time to visit. Spring and early summer are also one of the best seasons f o r festivals. From Easter’s Semana Santa to local Flamenco fairs and the astonishing human towers of Catalonia. This is a great time to visit the Canary Islands which can often be to too hot to enjoy in summer.
Summer in Spain
If you are tied down to travelling during the summer months we would recommend visiting the North of Spain which is typically cooler. A great option is the Picos de Europa one of the most impressive mountain ranges in Spain and a superb environment for walking. Due to the elevation gains, altitude, and close proximity to the sea this area is great for the summer months.
Tip: If travelling during school holidays a single-centered trip is perfect for families. It offers the flexibility to make the trip as active or as relaxing as you please. One of our most popular is the Las Alpajurras Escape .
Autumn in Spain
September temperatures are wonderful, especially for walking and biking. It can still be pretty hot in the big cities of Madrid and Seville, however, Catalonia and the north start to soften. September has become a very popular time to travel for this reason its now a perfect alternative to Spring . In October , temperatures begin to dip across the country, however, Andalucia can still be in the 20s at this time of year.
Tip: Do bring a good waterproof jacket if traveling during October as downpours can happen at any time.
Beaches - there are plenty of places in Spain with beautiful and uncrowded beaches which are perfect for dipping weary feet in and our tours pass many of them! For a hidden Catalonian gem, there is the picturesque Sa Tuna cove near Begur surrounded by pine trees. In Menorca, Cap de Cavallería with its photogenic lighthouse sits perched high above the ocean. And whilst most people think of whitewashed villages in beating hot sun for Andalucia, the coastline is quite spectacular. On our Walking in Costa Almeria tour, visit Monsul beach with its distinctive black sands and volcanic rocks, used as a filming location for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Food and Drink - if there is one thing Spain does well, it's food! Some favourite Spanish specialities of the Macs team include the delicious Jamón Iberico , mouthwatering pork found in the Aracena region, Esqueixada, a tasty salad dish made with salt cod popular in Catalonia, Pulpo a Feira , boiled octopus sprinkled with paprika, a speciality in Galicia, and of course you can't beat nibbling on some small Tapas dishes like Gambas al ajillo (fresh shrimp with garlic and cayenne pepper) and Patatas Bravas (fried potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce)! To whet your appetite, why not try a delicious glass of local wine in Galicia, Albariño. Or if sherry is your thing, hop from one bodega to another, sampling their wares in the sherry capital of Jerez de Frontera.
Towns and Villages - away from the amazing coastline and beaches and some of the more well known cities and towns, Spain has plenty of more undiscovered towns and villages well worth exploring. Sotres, one of the highest villages in the Picos de Europa in northern Spain is a charming agricultural village where they famously mature Queso de Cabrales cheese in the limestone caves which are abundant in the local area. Another mountain village, Capileira , is well worth a visit, set high above the Poqueira Gorge and with an abundance of local handicraft shops lining its twisty, narrow streets. And near the coast, but perhaps not in a part of Mallorca so well known are the gorgeous honey-coloured Tramuntana villages of Soller , Deia and Valldemossa .
Every year, thousands embark on various routes to hike to Santiago de Compostela. A deep spiritual sense accompanies this journey, whether you seek it or not. Meeting fellow pilgrims, listening to their stories, and sharing your experience alongside them makes a Camino tour a transformative event.
The north coast of Spain is one less visited by holidaymakers, which makes it the perfect place to explore Spain without the crowds. What makes it even more perfect is the stunning scenery, outstandingly friendly locals and, of course, the food. The Camino del Norte is the quieter and arguably more beautiful cousin of the Camino de Santiago and this video gives you a broad overview of the first stage.

Traverse the centuries of time as well as Northern Spain on the medieval Camino de Santiago pilgrim trail. This trip offers a chance to walk the entire length of the Spanish Camino, from St Jean Pied de Port in France, across the Pyrenees and onwards to Santiago. The entire trip can be done over a month, or you can break it down further as this itinerary comprises of our separate self guided walks along the Camino in the Pyrenees, to Logroño, Burgos, Leon and Santiago de Compostela. The fascinating route will bring to life the unique history that you'll discover along this famous pilgrimage trail. Known as 'The Way of St James' in France, the Camino de Santiago winds its way across borders, following in the footsteps of thousands of medieval pilgrims through the beautiful Sierras of Navarre and Aragon. The route passes a multitude of churches and monasteries that mark the Compostela Trail, resembling a travelling museum of Romanesque art.

Daily walks are between 12-30km on well marked trails over diverse terrain – from relatively flat to mountainous. Some of the route is on paved surfaces – you should pay particular attention to your footwear to ensure that it is suitable to avoid blisters. This is a well worn path where route finding will be reasonably straightforward (refer below for further details on self guided adventures). The main areas to concentrate on route finding are arriving and leaving towns and cities. The accent is on keeping a steady pace to take in all of the attractions, with time to stop and take photos. You will need a good level of fitness to participate fully in this adventure. Taxi and bus services operate between towns in the event that you are unable to walk on a particular day.

This was by far my favorite tour in Spain. Mariela was fantastic and we really enjoyed our time with her. The monastery and views were amazing. Lunch was great and the wine tour was more than expected. We truly loved our time with Mariela and would book another tour with her when we come back!
We did a Priorat wine tour from Escaladei and it was great! Our host Mariela was wonderful and the wineries we visited were all different, inviting and the wines were delish!
This tour was the highlight of our trip to Barcelona. Our guide was Samuel, who was exceptionally well informed. The lunch was supposed to be a 3 course meal but was actually more like 5 or 6 courses. It was one of the best meals we had during our trip. The Priorat area is a unique and prestigious wine region. I have visited several others and I would put this one at the top of my list. I would highly recommend a visit to the Priorat region and out guide Samuel to anyone with an interest in wine.
Spanish Trails tours and guides are the best! We went out to the Priorat wine region with Craig on 3/3 and could have had a better time. We had comfortable safe transport, delicious wine and lunch included as well as stops for impressive views and stories along the way. The wine cellars we visited were all unique and special in their own ways. Definitely not something you could arrange on your own without prior knowledge and relationships in this region. We will definitely be back to tour again with Spanish trails!
We had an amazing private tour with Jose. Four stop for tapas and wine mixed with a walking tour of the Old Town districts. Jose picked the best selections to give us a great variety. His attention to detail did not go unrecognized. He quickly picked up on our likes and preferences. The entire tour was comfortable and natural with no forced conversation or awkward moments. I highly recommend this tour, especially if you love to walk. We did cover a lot of ground but it was absolutely worth it! You cannot go wrong here!
Martin was a wonderful guide. He was kind, fun, and knowledgeable. The tour of Montserrat, lunch, and winery visit were all fantastic. It was a great day trip.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations
By Claudia Looi 2 Comments
Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.
Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.
Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.
The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean
To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow. Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.
The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:
1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.
2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

Know More about this tour
Meet your expert guide outside the Kremlin and head underground with your Moscow metro ticket to discover the citys underground treasures. See the most interesting stations with extravagant Soviet-era architecture and hear the history surrounding the metro stations from your expert guide. Widely praised as one of Stalins finest architectural achievements, Moscow 's subway was created to symbolize his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn about his successors, who later toned down the ornateness of the subways architecture, and see how the different eras are reflected in the character of each station. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today. Visit Revolution Square Station ( Ploschad revolyutsii ) and admire the 72 magnificent bronze sculptures that depict the people of the former Soviet Union, set underneath marble arches designed by the legendary Russian architect Alexey Dushkin. Another Dushkin-created station is Novoslobodskaya , and youll head here next to admire its dazzling stained-glass panels. Discover Baroque dcor, vaulted ceilings and chandeliers at Komsomolskaya Station, and then marvel at the grandiose and pompous design of Kurskaya Station -- one of the first stations to be built. Its design reflects Stalins communist ideals and youll note its left-wing slogans on the walls, next to mosaics that symbolize the victory of his regime over poverty and starvation. Finally, pay a visit to Mayakovskaya , the station thats named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky, and see why its often considered the most beautiful and iconic Moscow Metro station. Gaze upward at some 30 fascinating mosaics that depict Stalins vision for a bright Soviet future, and then admire the features of typical pre-World War II architecture that the station embodies. Your tour ends here.
