Trek Rail ICON: Build your dream bike with the Trek Project One programme

trek project one ebike

When Trek approached us with the offer to be the world’s first and only magazine to customise a Trek Rail, there was no doubt in our minds that this was a “hell-yes” opportunity. The good news is that from now on you can buy your very own customised Trek Rail as well. We’ve documented the making of the Project One ICON Rail giving you an insider look at Trek’s stateside production and, of course, we had to throw a party on our home trails with our new baby!

trek project one ebike

Do you remember the first time? The virgin ride on your brand new bike, and the bashful unveiling in front of your mates? Each year we test around 50 to 100 eMTBs here at the magazine and, quite frankly, when faced with so many shiny, new things, it’s sometimes hard not to get blasé. This wasn’t the case with our customized Rail though – far from it. There’d been no shortage of anticipation building when we worked ourselves through the Project One configurator, so by the time the first ride rolled around, we were chomping at the teeth with excitement. Would it live up to expectations?

One-off: The idea behind Project One

How much patience do you have when it comes to Amazon orders? Are you a Prime subscriber with no time to waste? A product’s emotional value and our relationships to brands are becoming less of a thing due to society’s rampant consumerism and our ever-growing demand for next-day-delivery and free-return-franticness. With so many things that can be replaced or exchanged, how often do we ever end up waiting more than 24 hours between ordering and receiving our goods?

For a bike brand with a turnover somewhere around a billion, it’s not inconceivable to imagine that Trek are all about efficiency and time-saving measures. But that’s exactly where Project One goes against the tide. By giving you the opportunity to spec your own bike and customise it almost exactly as you please, Trek have succeeded in re-strengthening the bonds between bike and rider, rider and brand, anticipation and excitement. It’s very different to clicking “order now” on Amazon.

Trek wondered why the bike industry had turned into a place where the more you paid, the fewer choices you often had. It seemed odd to them; and if the opposite approach worked in virtually every other industry, why couldn’t they shake up the world of cycling? Why didn’t consumers revolt against the norm, in which paying 10,0000 € for a bike instead of 2,000 € meant fewer colour choices and little to no flexibility when it comes to components? Project One is Trek’s answer to the growing cries for custom bikes – and it is no longer limited to carbon road and mountain bikes.

trek project one ebike

The Trek Rail is the brand’s first eMTB to be made available in Project One. The options for customisation apply to spec and colourways, and there are various tiers: Project One, Project One ICON and Project One Ultimate (bikes in this category may end up costing a whopping € 25,000).

If you got in trouble for coloring on the walls as a kid , then you’ll love our Project One custom bike program. – Trek

While Project One Ultimate is intended to appeal to individuals who truly demand the most niche product in which no ask is too big, we decided to go for the more “moderate” approach. The Project One ICON scheme has Trek’s new ICON frame finish at its core, with illustrious colours like Cosmos, Brushed Liquid Metal, Prismatic Pearl, Refliptive, Black Gold or Molten Marble swirling around our heads. Whichever you pick, #bikeporn is a given. The ICON designs have a distinctive texture, depth and vibe – one which screams “made by hand”.

Producing our custom Trek Rail

All Project One bikes are produced at Trek’s HQ in Waterloo, Wisconsin and those who select to collect their bike in person will get an invite into the hallowed turf, with a VIP tour, a chat with the development team, the Trek Precision Fit experience, and a lunch ride on the company’s private trails ( click here to read our first ride review of the Trek Rail 9.8 ). Geographical restrictions meant that we asked for the bike to be delivered to our HQ in Stuttgart, Germany, but keep reading to see where the Project One production takes place:

trek project one ebike

Trek’s founding principle is emblazoned in the entrance hall at the HQ: ‘Born in a barn’, a homage to the brand’s earliest days where the five-strong team first began. ‘Raised on rocket science’, another slogan, refers to founders Dick Burke and Bevil Hogg’s continual pursuit of progress since 1976 and their efforts to constantly set new benchmarks. There’s a little exhibition with the company’s highlights, including their first carbon frame in 1991, the Trek 2500, and the introduction of the current Project One.

trek project one ebike

Where the magic happens – the finishing touches to each frame takes place in the heart of the HQ. It’s impressive to observe and this clearly isn’t mechanised mass production; there’s a surgical precision to the artisanal process of the paint job. But before the bikes land here, the carbon frames need to be prepared and the colours need to be mixed.

trek project one ebike

As a testament to the hard work invested in each Project One bike, Trek make sure that each ICON and Ultimate frame bears the signature of the staff member who’s skilful touch created it.

Trek Rail – Project One ICON: prices, options and availability

The Trek Rail is only available for Project One ICON and Ultimate customisation, unlike Trek’s road bikes and non-motorized mountain bikes. For an ICON model, you can expect to pay about € 1,000 extra on top of the standard model price. Thanks to the online calculator you can easily keep track of how much each bit of customisation will cost you.

trek project one ebike

In terms of componentry, the customisation options are currently limited to a few drivetrain options and select components. Time your order well: the lead time could be as short as two weeks, but this fluctuates in the high season. We received our Rail right on time to enjoy the final dwindling rays of autumn.

You can get started straight away at projectone.trekbikes.com and configure your own bike.

Custom carving on the King’s home trails

Champagne corks popped and the tester King leaps down from his throne, shedding the fur coat and donning his purple-green kit. Today is time for his local trails to be knighted, and that requires his majesty to be aboard the finest equipment in fitting E-MOUNTAINBIKE style: Wild, disruptive, very diverse, and pretty damn cool. Take a look for yourself.

trek project one ebike

Who wouldn’t go mad for a bike that stands out as much as this one? Bling bling is one thing, but recognising the craft within a bike is something else entirely. And knowing that you’ve helped determine its course through the customisation takes your relationship to the next level. People say that your first time is unlikely to go without a hitch, but in this case, we’d argue the opposite.

Trek Domane SLR 9.9 Project One first ride review

Eye-burstingly expensive but bum-coddlingly comfortable

Rob Spedding

Incredible levels of comfort, potential gravel-dabbling versatility and the adjustable IsoSpeed system is genuinely useful

Very expensive, even for base-level models

The third generation of the Trek Domane carries the revised rear IsoSpeed layout first seen on the new Madone , has massively increased tyre clearances, features neat integrated storage, and has a host of aero-improvements that make it a true — and truly comfortable — super bike.

  • The 2020 Trek Domane gets more aero, more adjustable and goes disc-only
  • Trek’s cheapest ever Madone is here
  • Best road bikes 2019: how to choose the right one for you

2020 Trek Domane SLR9.9 Project One key specs

Delightful sparkly glittery Trek Domane

  • Updated frameset with top-tube mounted IsoSpeed system
  • Semi-internal cable routing
  • SRAM Red eTap AXS groupset
  • Bontrager Aeolus XXX 4 wheelset
  • Bontrager R3 28mm tyres
  • Project One bikes start at £9,650 / €10,500

More comfortable, more aero, more faster-er

The headline figures for the new Trek Domane SLR are impressive — Trek claims the bike is up to 27 per cent more compliant than the previous flagship Domane, “one minute per hour faster” than the last model and the top-end Project One version we were given to test around the roads of Padova, Italy, has a £9,650 / €10,500 ($ N/A) price tag.

I’m not expecting you to feel sorry for me but that last figure is actually one of the problems with bike launches — we get to ride the toppest of top-spec machines and, with few exceptions, they’re always impressive. And Trek will be pleased to hear that their flagship Domane Mk. III is impressive.

I’m going to start with the faster claim. While not an overtly aero bike in the same vein as the Madone, Trek has generally cleaned up the Domane to make it more slippery.

There’s nothing instantly obvious — no Kammtail seat tube, air-slicing fork designs or minuscule clearances between tyre and frame. Cables, however, are now almost entirely internal which will go some way to reducing drag.

Domane SL5 cable routing

Almost entirely internal? Trek has opted to only internalise the cables from the top tube back, which is something that I’m happy to support. Should you want to swap your bars or, you know, travel with your bike, there’s no battling with a complicated, proprietary internally-cabled stem and bar system.

Is this setup faster than the last Domane? Well, the external ‘cabling’ on this rider surely negated any aero gains from the bike but, I was lucky enough to ride last year’s Madone SLR at its launch and that, genuinely, felt like a rocket ship. Even when I was feeling rinsed, I’d look down at my Wahoo and be amazed at the speeds I was sustaining.

The Domane didn’t quite perform such miracles and doesn’t have the same accelerative oomph as the Madone but, honestly, it feels fast enough, not least for an endurance bike.

Our test model was rolling on Bontrager’s excellent Aeolus XXX 4 47mm-deep aero wheels — these are stiff, stable and quick and complement the frame well.

We’re used to bike brands telling us how their latest and greatest bikes are lighter than ever before but the new Domane has put on around 200g over the previous iteration, but then the same — at the very least — can probably be said for me compared to when I rode that Madone.

I can’t say that the Domane felt like a slouch on the climbs — I did and our Italian ride guide Allesandro will vouch for that — but it isn’t necessarily designed to be a KOM-killer in the same vein as the Emonda . You’ll have to wait for the climbing verdict of someone far skinnier for a definitive view of the Domane’s ascending attributes.

Trek Domane Mk3 tyre clearance

Tyre-wise, you can fit rubber up to 38mm-wide on the new Domane with 4mm of clearance on either side, and all bikes below the 9.9 we were riding will ship with new 32mm tyres.

It’s de-rigueur to point a comfort bike at potholes and the Domane, with its front and rear IsoSpeed, does a truly excellent job at soaking up all but the biggest hits

These, claim Trek, roll faster than narrower tyres in almost all conditions and help contribute to the Domane being their most versatile road bike ever. Could the Domane be a road and gravel machine rolled into one? Certainly, the journalists who took the Domane on a hard, fast and technical gravel ride seemed impressed.

For the road ride, we were running standard 28mm rubber and this was in no way detrimental to the Domane’s main selling point — its comfort.

  • Best road bike tyres in 2019: everything you need to know

Okay, the Italian roads we were riding were, on the whole, pretty good but there were still opportunities to test the bike’s compliance. It’s de-rigueur to point a comfort bike at potholes and the Domane, with its front and rear IsoSpeed, does a truly excellent job at soaking up all but the biggest hits.

The star of the Domane’s cushioning show is the adjustable toptube IsoSpeed damper... you can tune your Domane from racy stiff to smooth operator in just a couple of minutes

When we did encounter a rutted, broken asphalt descent the Domane handled it with aplomb — the compliance encourages you to descend faster and brake later than you might on a more rigid machine.

The star of the Domane’s cushioning show is the adjustable toptube IsoSpeed damper, which debuted on the Madone in 2018. Undo a couple of allen bolts below the top tube and a slider is revealed — move it forwards and you add more flex, backwards and the bike stiffens up.

As with the Madone, this really does work and there’s a tangible difference, meaning you can tune your Domane from racy stiff to smooth operator in just a couple of minutes. It’s worth mentioning that the top tube-mounted IsoSpeed system is only available on SLR models, although the SL’s will inherit the tuneable seatpost IsoSpeed currently found on the outgoing range toppers.

The front end IsoSpeed isn’t tuneable but does a good job of isolating shocks through the bars and the bars themselves are carbon IsoCore models. These have a layer of elastomer within the carbon which Trek says adds another 20 per cent of cushioning to the front end.

Elsewhere, our test build was decked out with SRAM’s Red eTap AXS 12-speed groupset . We love it, simple as that and, of course, the fancy Project One pearlescent paint is always a hit with any MAMIL who once lusted after a TVR Chimera .

2020 Trek Domane Mk. III early impressions

Obviously, we want to spend a lot more time on the new Domane and will be getting our hands on one back in the UK soon but first impressions are good.

It’s an excellent bike that does a very good job of catering for both fans of speed and connoisseurs of comfort. Of course, we’re also keen to test the more affordable — though the base Tiagra-equipped model comes in at a pricey $2,499 / €2,299 / £2,100 — 2020 Domane SL models as these are likely going to be more relevant to more riders. Watch this space.

Trek Project One Ultimate – Creating the $ 25,000 Dream Bike

trek project one ebike

What’s the difference between buying a $ 25,000 bike and a $ 2,000 bike? We travelled to the US to visit Trek Bicycles and find out how the billion-dollar company has brought a revolutionary concept of individualism and craftsmanship to the ultra high-end market. With an exclusive insight into the new superlative of luxury: The Trek Project One Ultimate program – the $ 25,000 bike.

trek project one ebike

Trek’s headquarters in Waterloo, Wisconsin are where our Project One experience begins. Walking around its factory and design facilities the messages that are imprinted on the walls make it all feel a bit Silicon Valley. Signs quoting Steve Jobs’ 10th commandment: “Prototype to the extreme”, are there encouraging employees to step out of everyday thinking and challenge average.

  Raised on rocket science.

The building’s atrium is divided into sections which visually project the company principles. “Born in a barn”, an ode to where the very first Trek bikes were made; “raised on rocket science” which depicts how since Trek’s inception in 1976, co-founders Dick Burke and Bevil Hogg have been constantly looking for ways to innovate and revolutionise their products. An endeavour that’s ranged from the first introduction of carbon into their frames in 1991 with the Trek 2500, to the current Project One programme. A tour through the factory sheds light on Trek’s carbon manufacturing process, along with the painting, assembling, test labs and race shop giving insight into how high Trek’s standards are – especially when building bikes for cycling’s top elite athletes. At this high-tech facility painting robots busily hum away alongside artists that hand paint the finishing touches, a highlight graphic designer Micah Moran made sure wasn’t missed.

trek project one ebike

Eliminating the Industry Status Quo – Project One

When you’re a company whose revenue hits the $1bn mark, quite quickly you’re stereotyped as being enslaved by economies of scale. This is where Trek Project One goes against the grain. Why is it that in the cycling industry the more you spend on a bike the less choice you seem to have? For most other industries it’s the reverse. So why have we come to accept that if we pay €10,000 we have less options on colour, parts, and wheelsets than with a €2,000 bike? Project One represents Trek’s unwillingness to rest upon its laurels and let others trailblaze the way; it’s the brand’s way of honouring the unique individual. Tell the laws of mediocre this isn’t right – that a multinational company can still do customisation.

trek project one ebike

The Project One online system allows you to choose from a range of models, not only road but off-road too. Easy to navigate, Trek have made choosing a custom bike as uncomplicated as choosing a suit from your favourite online retailer. With hundreds of different preset paint designs that vary in price depending on complexity, Trek offer a choice that ranges from classic to idiosyncratic. From animal print to green tinged flames curling around top tubes, it’s obvious the designers have fun. So much so they’re willing to sign their names onto your frame just to let you know it was a job done with care.

trek project one ebike

Not prepared to stop at just giving you free rein on your paint job, Project One lets you decide on componentry such as wheels, groupset, saddle. Darn! They even let you become that awkward customer and dictate which cable housing you want your machine to have. Project One starts at € 500 more than the base price of the model you are customising, with the online calculator providing an easy guide of how much each bit of customisation is going to cost. The biggest surprise for us was that the current lead time is only two weeks. To Trek customisation shouldn’t mean having to wait a lifetime, as is often the case with other makers.

trek project one ebike

If you can dream it, we can make it reality — even if that means developing a new paint specifically for your frame.

trek project one ebike

Then after the Trek designers have collaboratively assembled your piece of art, if you really want to get all ceremonial about it, you can travel to the Wisconsin HQ for a grand unveiling and have your debut ride out with them on the Trek team lunchtime ride.

Trek Project One Ultimate – as unique as a fingerprint

If the Project One experience blows your mind we’ll give you some perspective. Say Project One is akin to fine dining at a Michelin starred restaurant, then Ultimate is that Michelin experience with a world-class chef, but joining them in their own kitchen. Starting at $ 25,000 Trek Project One Ultimate is the superlative of luxury.

Here this $ 25,000 dream adventure takes you on a journey of self-discovery. Starting in Wisconsin, you receive a bike fitting that details every conceivable body measurement to ensure your handmade, custom built frame fits you to perfection with the Trek Precision Fit.

Then your allocated personal designer sets out to know your story, what is it that makes you tick. Through a process of listening to everything you say – what you lust for, what you detest, what cycling means to you, a moodboard is created. This is the artist’s bloodline that helps them interpret and create the bike you want…even if they don’t have it. Well, within reason.

You still have to choose one of Trek’s models, but that’s really where the limitations on your creativity stop, as long as it complies with Trek’s safety standards – leopard print rocket boosters probably won’t make the cut.

trek project one ebike

With most frames taking a minimum of 13 hours for the paint job, Trek’s craftsmanship is market leading. Micah, the head graphic designer explained: “If you can dream it, we can make it reality — even if that means developing a new paint specifically for your frame.” One of the first Project One Ultimate clients, Boeing’s CEO, was set on having the Dreamliner aeroplane colours as a part of the design. This took Trek down a 20 hour colour mixing journey to perfectly match the pantones. It’s one of many stories that back up their self-confession of being obsessed to the point of absurdity.

trek project one ebike

Dreams Can Come True

A once-in-a-lifetime bike that conveys your story: the team at Trek live by their founder’s motto of ‘Raised on rocket science.’ The limits of possibility are continually being stretched. The descriptions of ‘fast and expensive’ don’t suffice these days when it comes to owning a premium bike. Trek’s Project One and Project One Ultimate approaches are able to instil a desire in the bike industry to shake up the status quo as well as meet – no, exceed – today’s ever increasing demand for custom bikes. Whether you’re in the market for a 2,000 euro or a 25,000 euro bike; your dream bike is about more than just performance, milligrams and rigidity. Your bike has to tell your story and disclose more about you than your passport does. If you’ve got enough money in the bank then Trek can definitely help you here.

One of the city’s most dangerous industries is getting a major pedal-assist from a coalition of advocates committed to making food delivery work safer.

Old bikes ready for exchange.

Dozens more delivery workers exchanged used two-wheelers — with hazardous batteries — for new e-bikes with safer ones at a trade-in event last Thursday on the Lower East Side organized by the Equitable Commute Project and Los Delivery Boys. More than 100 old bikes have been swapped so far in this fashion.

“It’s an upgrade to the bike that’s popular with delivery workers, but these batteries are certified,” said Melinda Hanson, co-founder of the Equitable Commute Project and founder of Brightside City . “You can tell that those batteries on their older models are not made for those bikes and they’ve been retrofitted onto them.”

The group’s bike swap efforts arose after city lawmakers passed a package of safety bills in response to more than 200 fires causing six deaths that were sparked by malfunctioning lithium-ion batteries in 2022. Last year, the City Council prohibited the sale of e-bikes with uncertified batteries and created a city-subsidized buy-back program that would swap out old bikes for new at a heavily discounted price.

Mayor Adams supported the measure, but the program which the Fire Department and other agencies were supposed to launch this year, has languished for months. After weeks of inquiry, a City Hall press officer recently told Streetsblog that the Department of Transportation would manage the program, whose start date is unknown.

Instead, nonprofits and private companies have filled the gap in city action and also helped defer costs as electric mobility gets more expensive .

The Equitable Commute Project, which includes Transportation Alternatives, NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business, and the Bronx-based community bank Spring Bank, organized its e-bike swap in celebration of its 100th trade-in. Reps from DoorDash, the online food ordering middleman that employs delivery workers, and Fly E-Bike, the six-year-old electric bike, scooter and motorcycle manufacturer that provided the new bicycles, were also present.

At the event, deliveristas dropped off their old bikes and received Fly-11 Pro e-bike models with UL-2849 certified batteries that can provide eight hours of charge and are about as likely to catch fire as a cell phone (bike shop operators recommended charging every four to five hours and having an extra battery you can sub instead).

Such e-bikes normally retail for $2,000, but deliveristas paid as little as $800 to $900 by filling out an application, sending a picture of their current bike, and proving that they made $500 with Uber Eats or DoorDash in order to become eligible. Many workers also applied for a no-credit-score-required loan from Spring Bank to offset the cost of the bike.

Luis, a Bronx delivery worker who primarily delivers food in Upper Manhattan, exchanged his bike to be safer.

“I don’t want my apartment to catch on fire,” he said. “It’s a fear we have. I heard stories about it and saw it on the news. It’s a shared concern in our community.”

Some delivery workers said they felt pressured by their delivery apps to meet performance goals the companies set. If delivery workers are late dropping off takeout orders, their score can be penalized and their account can even be deactivated.

Bespoken Word – Trek is slashing the number of bikes it offers by 40%. Here's what that means for your favorite brands in the future

In part one of a new ‘What Happens Next?’ series, Guy Kesteven has some dark warnings about what’s going to happen to a lot of bike brands in the next few years

Trek Marlin being ridden in a desert

The Taipei show is the biggest trade bike show in the world. You can go there as a punter but its primary purpose is for far eastern vendors to sell their stuff to the biggest bike brands . Unsurprisingly, given that anyone who is anyone is probably there, it’s also the biggest place for bike industry gossip.

'Right sizing'

Right now, what everyone is talking about is Trek reporting that they’ll be reducing their bike range by 40 percent and the size of their overall business by 10 percent going forward. Yes, that Trek! The solid, dependable, privately owned Wisconsin-based brand has been rock solid since it started selling touring bikes in the 1970s. The Trek who most industry people were saying pulled a blinder by allegedly using their scale and cash reserves to guarantee the supply of parts when production and delivery choked during Covid. That meant Trek was the first to get big shipments of bikes after everyone had sold out and the sheer amount of Marlin hardtails they dropped into dealers has achieved mythical status.

Unfortunately, while they sold a huge amount of bikes to people wearing face masks, there are still a lot of Marlins in shops – and there are probably more in warehouses all over the world. So Trek is doing the smart thing and making fewer bikes going forward. Because otherwise that backlog of Marlins is never going to get sold and Trek will hemorrhage even more money storing them or selling them for less than a profit. And while their use of the phrase ‘Right sizing’ is definitely corporate ‘posi–speak’, the decision to downsize even based on pre-Covid levels is almost certainly correct.

The news that old dependable Trek is making big changes to stop future oversupply is a big deal, but they are far from being alone in this. From the sound of the rumor drums there are other very big companies, as well as many mid-sized and mini brands that are totally constipated with stock. And in many cases that’s not just because they ordered too much, but because they have a whole ton of very closely spaced products. Orange's multitude of visually near-identical, single pivot hand-made monocoque bikes made it hard for customers to pick an obvious winner and nearly put them out of business. I can’t help wondering if the reason Santa Cruz are running very big discounts on some bikes right now is because there are so many to choose from the confusion is enough to put people off.

In contrast, Yeti has a pretty clear and clean product lineup and is still currently selling bikes full price. Other brands like Whyte and Norco have also massively reduced their product portfolio to help them leapfrog ahead of brands buried in out-of-date stock. In the case of Whyte, it has even sidelined projects they’ve been working on for years to put nearly all their eggs in the E-Lyte basket. After speaking to Jason Schiers and Clive Gosling from GT at Core bike show , it’s clear they’ve done the same. Canceling whole bike lines just before launch so they can concentrate on a few really strong new offerings.

Trek Marlin 7 bike

Brands on the run

While figures like a 40 percent reduction in bike range sound dramatic, it doesn’t have to mean a loss of family favorites. Trek in particular produces a huge size range of bikes and generally makes each model in multiple colors. So it could be that every bike stays, but only in the best-selling color or with fewer options spanning the sizing spread. Not great if you're an odd size or like a choice of aesthetic, but not a disaster.

But for brands that have already slimmed downsizing and hacked the options back to a minimum, things will be a lot harder in the months and years ahead. There’s less room to maneuver too as geometry is now basically all the same and while internal storage is a nice feature, I’ve never heard anyone chopping in their perfectly good old bike just to get a snack hatch on the new one. Unless you’ve got a genuinely different suspension technology that people actually want (buyers are traditionally very averse to new tech until it’s multi-proven), then realistically how many almost identical 4-bar or twin-link carbon bikes with a 64 to 66-degree head tube do we need to choose from?

And while brand loyalty or re-polishing faded memories of past glory days will work with us old gits who’ve been hanging around the sport for decades, we aren’t the people brands need to attract to stay alive.

GT Sensor Carbon LE on the trails

Power rangers

The people brands need to attract are the new mountain bikers, who may have dusted off an old bike during Covid or who just found MTB from fresh and are now encouraging their mates to join them. These riders are a very different breed with different brand and buying values. While old schoolers are used to glitches and bodges being part of biking and were prepared to put up with random customer service and extensive research to find the right next bike, the new breed isn’t. They don’t want a confusing sea, as far as they can tell, of identical bikes. They want stuff that works rather than needing to be nursed and they want it presented, sold and serviced professionally. And we might kid ourselves that this is the case in the bike industry, we all know that for every slick showroom and logo polo shirt, there’s a bargain bin in the corner and an ordering process that’s still based on paper stuck on spikes. But the whole chat about retail is for another time.

The big thing that these new buyers mean is a total change in brand recognition and that’s also tied very heavily into the rise of the e-bike.

Back of rider on e-MTB on track through woods

E-bikes are not the miracle cure

What I mean is that while some of these new buyers might recognize the big brands like Specialized , Santa Cruz, Canyon , Shimano , or Trek, they’ll definitely spot Bosch as a brand name to go towards because their power tools, domestic appliances, auto parts, etc. are recognized as costing a bit more but return great reliability. Some outsiders might know Giant bikes, but the smartest move of the world’s largest bicycle manufacturer is to team up with Yamaha for their motors. With a lot of e-MTBers coming from an off-road motorbike background, brands like GasGas and Husqvarna are going to stand out a lot more than Haibike or Cube . Even if you get a better spec for a lower price by going for the latter. I can’t help feeling that brands like Bosch and Yamaha are going to get sick of having to deal with hundreds of relatively tiny bike company intermediaries to access the cycling market and will just make their own bikes.

There are other big players poised too. As soon as Porsche is confident that their investment in Fazua motors is a sound one, why wouldn’t they go direct through their existing dealers with all the upsell and aspirations they bring? Honda is already starting to show concept bikes again too and it’s clear that this personal mobility part of the market is becoming increasingly interesting to the auto industry. Hell, why wouldn’t Apple go for a quick positive spin on their entry to personal urban mobility by following up their failed ‘self-driving car’ project with an ‘Apple Bike’? They recently added a ton of cycling-friendly features to their Apple Watch and regardless of its actual performance, you can guarantee it would sync with all your other devices instantly and look brilliant. Not something you can say about every e-bike from current manufacturers.

But then maybe that’s a good thing. Talking to managers at bike brands, they’re certainly beginning to realize that as the e-bike market matures, it’s not the fairy tale, fortune-creating cash cow it looked like at the start. Whatever the brand or design, e-bikes have a far higher return/warranty rate, up to 100 percent in some instances. Nobody ever had their house or warehousing destroyed and insurance companies get startled by a conventional bike catching fire either.

They also require far more parts to order, stock, integrate, and wait for delivery on. That's after going through a whole extra level of explosive category shipping headaches and costs and being hamstrung if they don’t turn up. While it’s a pain if SRAM changes its transmission and makes your existing stock look dated overnight, if a motor brand makes your entire inventory electrically extinct that’s a huge issue. Because while the higher ticket price of an e-bike is a win at the till, when those units aren’t shifting then they’re sucking up a whole lot more cash. Which is of course the whole issue we started with in the first place.

Yamaha YDX-MORO e-MTB

Know your business

Finally, what the pandemic and subsequent sh*t show have clearly demonstrated is that bike and component brands know as much about their customers, demand and sales trends as a triathlete knows about suspension setup. In fact, the spike, rebound and sag in sales we’ve seen recently is almost certainly worse than the back-end performance of a bike set up by someone in Speedos.

While the amount of talk around inclusivity, diversity and lowering entry barriers is definitely increasing and that’s a brilliant thing, I can’t help feeling it’s not really gaining traction yet either. That losing a hundred grams, changing head angle by a degree, or increasing tire space still gets more high fives in boardrooms and marketing agencies than something that will engage with hundreds of thousands of new riders, change their headspace, or genuinely open up cycling to whole new communities and demographics.

And these topics of advocacy, retail, racing, riding and media are all things I’m going to dig deeper into in this series. So for now, go enjoy the fact that there are way more bikes and brands than we need, and often being sold at bargain prices. Because one thing I’m sure of is that the situation isn’t going to last forever and if you end up buying bikes from the same place as your washing machine, then don’t say I didn’t warn you.

In the sea of stock black, black-and-red, black-and-blue, and black-and-white designs Trek’s Project One program has been a breath of fresh air. Over the years it has evolved to offer customers a bespoke buying experience with the ability to chose between a wide range of components and color schemes. With the click of a mouse, it’s possible to build a one-of-a-kind bike complete with your name on the top tube.

For 2018 they’ve released two more colorways. The Full Fade is a bi-color paint job with a subtle horizontal transition. The Breakaway splits the colors with an angled bias and a hard line. Both allow for bold or subtle statements depending on the colors you chose.

Hmmm … the breakaway split sure does look similar to the Speedvagen design that’s been out for a season or two. #imitationisflattery

The ‘Breakaway’ design also looks similar to the Norco Thresholds of 2016/2017 : https://bikerumor.com/2016/02/12/review-norco-threshold-sl-cyclocross-race-bike-gets-muddy-goes-fast/

I have a Trek from 1992 painted in a what you might call a “breakaway” paint scheme.

Everything old is new again.

boom

that fade is properly well done

Tom

fades are always a risky proposition in my book – most of those look like crap. But good on Trek for offering them.

JBikes

I’m a fan of the Project One fade. Colors need to selected to meet my taste and Trek does limit the combos. Regardless, these are Project One bikes. As such its someones semi-custom wish. If its hideous, its on them (but hopefully beauty is in the eye…).

VeloKitty

A black fade on the bottom just makes your bike look like it is dirty.

haromania

Those look completely bad ass.

Trek has returned to being the best and probably most underrated brand in the bike industry. Love the 90s cannondale yellow green fade. I used to loathe Trek and now I own four. Keep the it up!!

Car companies have been screwing up e-bikes for longer than you think

Avatar for Micah Toll

Believe it or not, there’s nothing new about major automakers and motorcycle companies trying and failing to build and sell electric bicycles. Despite millions upon millions of e-bikes being produced and sold each year by bicycle companies, automotive companies have spent decades failing to convert their design and manufacturing experience into e-bike success.

It might sound strange, especially since electric two-wheelers are the largest category of electric vehicles in the world – and growing quicker than any other type of EV . Even in a year when e-bike sales weren’t able to continue their meteoric growth trend, the e-bike industry still grew to a record size without any indication of stopping.

So you’d think that the automotive world, the very industry that has the most to lose from drivers becoming riders, would have gotten into the game by now.

The truth is that it has, and repeatedly. The problem is that Big Auto just hasn’t succeeded at it yet.

trek project one ebike

Chairman of the Light Electric Vehicle Association, Ed Benjamin, who has worked in the e-bike industry for nearly as long as it has been an industry and who has also advised several automakers on their e-bike projects, recently shared his thoughts on why Big Auto has failed so spectacularly in the e-bike industry.

And he certainly isn’t short on examples.

Legendary American automotive visionary Lee Iacocca was all-in on electric bikes as far back as the 1990s. He pushed for the EV Global electric bicycle (seen above), which was so revolutionary at its time that it had the word “e-bike” emblazoned across the side to let people know what it was. The e-bike started at a modest $995 and could hit 15 mph (25 km/h) all the way back in 1997 – a speed that Europeans still haven’t figured out how to surpass nearly 30 years later.

But as Benjamin explained, even automotive great Lee Iacocca couldn’t make e-bikes work for car companies. As it turned out, the deck was stacked against him. No matter how much he wanted his e-bikes to succeed, it didn’t translate into sales at car dealerships. The $1,000 price meant that car salesmen working on commission couldn’t be bothered to sell them, certainly not when they stood to make a lot more money pushing someone into a Taurus or F150. Dealerships also quickly learned that there wasn’t money to be made in servicing e-bikes when the same car bay could turn over significantly more cash.

Ford continued with global e-bike attempts into the early 2000s but was met with either quick failures or extremely slow, limited sales.

trek project one ebike

In Asia, giants such as Honda, Panasonic, and Yamaha were also met with limited success, though the limited Japanese market was one area where their early e-bikes did succeed. Panasonic was able to sell its e-bike drive system, but that agreement was largely led by the bicycle company Giant taking the reins and using its bike industry experience to set the partnership up for success.

Yamaha, it should be pointed out, actually created the first production electric bicycle as far back as 1993, though that early model also only took off in Japan while failing to gather meaningful traction in the rest of the world.

Yamaha is one of the few success stories to date, still producing impressive e-bikes , though the company famously spins its non-auto products off into their own companies. I think we can all accept that the engineers designing Yamaha’s motorcycles aren’t heavily involved in Yamaha’s pianos or biomedical products.

Site default logo image

Harley-Davidson shocked the industry back in 2018 with its beautiful electric bike designs. Still, it ultimately spun the project out as an independent company, Serial One , that failed to achieve strong sales. The e-bike company was eventually sold off to another bicycle company , which is currently attempting to revive the Serial One brand.

In many of these cases, the actual product was quite impressive. Harley’s Serial One e-bikes often scored great reviews, despite not sticking the landing with sales.

It’s a tough cycle that has continued to repeat itself, with Benjamin explaining his belief that it comes down to the same root causes, “my opinion: The pain and failure has usually been when an engineering culture, proud of their creation, has turned the bikes over to a sales culture that did not truly understand or believe in the product.”

That might explain why plenty of new e-bikes bearing automotive company names released in the last few years were merely licensing deals, such as Jeep’s e-bike built by Quietkat, Hummer’s e-bike built by Recon Power Bikes, Polestar’s e-bike built by Allebike, Toyota’s e-bike built by DOUZE cycles, and Ducati’s e-bikes built by Thok Bikes, among others.

GM was one of the few companies to build an impressive electric bike entirely in-house, but the project came at the worst possible time as COVID was blamed for killing off the GM e-bike before it could succeed.

trek project one ebike

With decades of examples, you might think automakers would have given up on the dream of building and selling their own electric bikes. But that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Several major companies are still trying to develop their own models, with some even doubling down on their investments.

Porsche is one example, with the company recently buying e-bike motor manufacturers and entire e-bike companies in an attempt to bring more e-bike expertise under the Porsche nameplate.

Rivian, the US-based electric truck maker, has also significantly expanded its e-bike development team with hires from major bicycle companies. The CEO also explicitly stated the company has its eyes on an e-bike model, though didn’t share any details about the direction Rivian’s e-bike could be headed.

All of this is to say that despite automakers consistently trying and failing to bring their own e-bikes to market, one thing is crystal clear: they sure aren’t giving up.

Sylvester Stallone as Dwight "The General" Manfredi in TULSA KING.

Tulsa King is embroiled in a controversy surrounding the treatment of its background actors.

An Atlanta-based casting agency has quit the Paramount+ dramedy amid claims posted online that background actors were verbally abused on the set by star Sylvester Stallone . The show is produced by 101 Studios, which is actively looking into the claims, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. At this point, the claims have not been verified, and the show’s director, Craig Zisk, is denying it ever happened.

Catrett Locke Casting confirmed on its Facebook page Monday that it was parting ways with Tulsa King , which recently started production on season two.

The admin of another casting group, Charleston SC Background Actors/Crew, added on Facebook: “Several groups are talking about what happened on the set of Tulsa King filming in Atlanta. At first I had hoped it was just a bad rumor started by 1 person who may have felt some type of way; but there have been countless people who were on set and have stated what they saw, how they were treated, etc. Sadly Sly Stallone and crew made things miserable for the background artists and many have said the set was completely unprofessional and a total mess. Although I have not personally worked with Rose Locke & CL Casting…I have great respect for them for pulling out of the project and looking out for their background artists.”

The move came amid screenshots circulating online taken from public and private Facebook casting groups about background actor experiences on the Tulsa King set. In two that were posted on X by TV writer Julie Benson ( Star Trek: Prodigy ) — who is not affiliated with Tulsa King — a casting director allegedly accused Stallone of fostering a “toxic environment,” while the moderator of a private Facebook group made more detailed accusations.

The author of a second attached screenshot from another FB group moderator said this: “While working on TK this week Sylvester Stallone was observed calling the director over and saying ‘what the F* is up with these F**** ugly background [actors].’ He and the director proceeded to call certain people terrible names and laughed at them. ‘Tub of lard,’ ‘fat guy with cane’ and was making fun of their weight and handicaps. Sly said, ‘Bring in pretty young girls to be around me.’ Rose Locke has resigned and will finish out this final week to give them the opportunity to find someone else. BGs need to stand together and NOT submit to TK moving forward to show this production we don’t support this kind of disrespect in GA.”

Another background actor echoed on that claim on the CL Casting Facebook page: “I was there, right behind Mr. Stallone. He shouted to the director to come over here. Lot’s of F bombs dropped. Stallone was very upset with the look of the background actors. Said they were hideous and old and fat. Next thing, people are being told to go back to holding and younger people were brought in.”

In addition, other background actors who claim they were at the shoot say they didn’t observe anything unusual. “I observed nothing out of the ordinary, nothing different than any of the other Background Acting experiences I have been involved in,” wrote one. “I noticed nothing out of the ordinary onset,” added another. “One of the directors was a bit feisty with his ‘let’s be quiet OR keep it down so we can work’ yet, I have heard that on every set. Not a big deal.” And a third: “There were some remarks made that i personally heard … things could have been handled more tactfully, but it’s their show.”

Paramount+ recently announced that Zisk ( Weeds ) is set to direct and executive produce the show’s second season. Production on the show’s second season recently got underway in Atlanta and Oklahoma.

Locke hasn’t confirmed the screenshots or replied to requests for comment, only confirming their company has parted ways with the production. Stallone and Paramount+ have had no comment. But a source close to the show said they only recently became aware of the claims and are looking into it and pride themselves on a fair and respectful workplace. Also, that they were “creatively trying to re-create and ensure we match scenes from last season.”

The production has had behind-the-scenes drama previously, when showrunner Terence Winter left the show at the end of the first season, having clashed with executive producer Taylor Sheridan . Winter then returned to the production for season two as a writer and executive producer without the showrunner duties, and Zisk was brought aboard as a director and EP.

Robbins EPB Takes on Fourth Bore for Moscow Metro Project

On 01.02.2017, contractor MIP-Story used the Robbins EPB371 (diameter 6 m), on its fourth bore of  the Moscow Metro. The EPB is expected to encounter difficult geology and running sands. The machine will also have to bore underneath an existing railway.

The new 1.9 km tunnel will connect Kosino and Ulitsa Dmitrievskogo stations as part of the new 17.2 km  Kozhukhovskaya metro line which will include 8 stations. The line will stretch from central Moscow to Nekrasovka, a remote district in southeastern Moscow. It will also pass through the Vykhino-Zhulebino, Ryazansky, Nizhegorodsky and Ukhtomsky districts. The Kozhukhovskaya Line will run parallel to the existing Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya Line and will intersect with it at Kosino station.

The works are divided into two stages. The first includes the digging by two 6 m TBM of two single-track tunnels between Nekrasovka and Kosino stations.

The second includes the excavation by a 10 m TBM of a double-track tunnel linking Nizhegorodskaya Ulitsa and Yugo-Vostochnaya stations. Click here for more and here to see photos from this continuing project. Visit http://www.therobbinscompany.com/en/ . 07/17.

In total, the contract between Elemash Magnit LLC (an enterprise of TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom in Elektrostal, Moscow region) and Red Wind B.V. (a joint venture of NovaWind JSC and the Dutch company Lagerwey) foresees manufacturing and supply over 200 sets of magnets. One set is designed to produce one power generator.

“The project includes gradual localization of magnets manufacturing in Russia, decreasing dependence on imports. We consider production of magnets as a promising sector for TVEL’s metallurgical business development. In this regard, our company does have the relevant research and technological expertise for creation of Russia’s first large-scale full cycle production of permanent rare-earth magnets,” commented Natalia Nikipelova, President of TVEL JSC.

“NovaWind, as the nuclear industry integrator for wind power projects, not only made-up an efficient supply chain, but also contributed to the development of inter-divisional cooperation and new expertise of Rosatom enterprises. TVEL has mastered a unique technology for the production of magnets for wind turbine generators. These technologies will be undoubtedly in demand in other areas as well,” noted Alexander Korchagin, Director General of NovaWind JSC.
