Generally speaking, a two-week Europe trip should be just enough if you are looking to cover its major highlights. However, if you want a comprehensive travel experience within this duration, it is better that you focus on a region or a few countries rather than traveling all over the continent. 

Choose a single country or schedule your trip around a handful of cities in different countries. While larger European cities may require three to four days to explore, you can get around smaller destinations in a day or two. Planning your trip around a particular region will cut down your travel time and save your time in transit.

If you are planning to visit multiple countries, you should prepare a tentative list of destinations you are interested in. If it is your first trip, stick to major cities and cultural centers for the sake of simplicity and convenience. Also, be flexible and optimize your travel time and budget. Be open to changing your itinerary depending on schedules and ticket prices.

There are dozens of insurance companies offering travel insurance, which can make it difficult for you to choose the right one.

There are a number of things that you should be aware of while purchasing travel insurance. If it is comprehensive medical insurance plans that you are interested in, make sure to find out what all the plan covers. If you are concerned about certain scenarios, then check out customizable travel insurance policies and find out if the provider can cover you for those situations. You also need to determine if there are reasonable coverage limits. Check deductibles and compensation limits in the insurance policy for this.

While insurance is important, it is mostly a safeguard against emergencies. If you are on a budget, you can go with the second- or even third-best option and prioritize getting your money’s worth instead of purchasing the most comprehensive coverage.

Europe has swathes of spectacular landscapes, a rich history, and vibrant cultures. Therefore, deciding on the best travel destinations on the continent can be difficult. However, you can narrow down on highlights by choosing one overarching theme for your trip. 

If you are looking forward to immersing yourself in art and history, then Italy, Spain , and France should be on the top of your list. Head for Switzerland , Norway , or Croatia if nature is what you love the most. For beaches and water sports, you will be hard-pressed to find better destinations than Greece , Portugal , and Montenegro.

Having said that, you can also diversify your itinerary by mixing and matching different elements of the same country. Italy  tops the charts not just for its medieval monuments and Renaissance art but also for coastal scenery and sun-soaked beaches. Similarly, Spain is a foodie paradise as much as it is an architectural hotspot.

Bus services like FlixBus and BusAbout offer a convenient means of transport if you wish to move from one city to another within the same country. Although these services do travel between countries, they might not be the best choice due to a longer travel time.

Budget airlines are another great way to get around Europe’s major cities, especially when you want to cut down on travel time between two countries. Keep an eye out and you might be able to snag tickets at unbelievable rates. Services like Skyscanner can be of help. Some of the largest budget airlines in the continent are Ryanair , WizzAir , Eurowings , and EasyJet .

Ridesharing services are a godsend for those wishing to immerse themselves in local culture as they offer you the chance to catch a ride with locals along the way. BlaBlaCar is the largest one. The only downside is that it is not always as easy to book a rideshare service as it is to catch a bus or hop on a budget flight.

The USA is one of the 63 countries whose citizens enjoy visa-free entry into the EU Schengen zone along with the UK and associated states like Iceland , Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. 

This means that if you are an American citizen with a valid US passport and want to travel to Europe for a limited amount of time for tourism or business purpose, you can do so anytime you want to. However, if you have more long-term plans (say, you intend to get employed, study, or simply live in Europe for an extended period of time), you will need to apply for a visa. The type of your visa and required documentation depend on your goals. 

Update for 2022: EU is set to launch ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) by the end of this year. It is similar to ESTA and is supposed to help simplify travel procedures and decrease security risks. All travelers allowed to travel to the EU and associated states visa-free will require an ETIAS authorization. This also includes US citizens.

If your country has a visa-free agreement with the EU, you are allowed to spend up to 90 days within a period of 180 days. Keep in mind that the countdown starts on the date of your entry and ends on the date of your exit. So, for example, if you fly into an EU country on the first of the month and exit on the 15th, it will count as a 15-day stay.

There are 63 countries in the world that have a visa-waiver agreement with the EU . If your country is part of this agreement, you can travel to Europe visa-free. You do, however, need to show the following to be allowed into the Schengen Zone and associated states.

• A valid passport: Your passport should have a validity of at least 3 months at the time of your entry into Schengen and be less than ten years old.
• Purpose of entry: In addition to your passport, you also require documents that prove that you are there for tourism purposes. These documents can include invoices for hotel reservations and booked tours. 
• Proof of financial means: You also need to carry documents proving that you can support yourself during your stay in the region.

Baltic Experience

First and foremost with these tours, the enjoyment and experiences can be enhanced by the guide you have and our guide for this trip was exceptional! There are a LOT of cobblestones to walk on this tour so sensible footwear is an absolute must. Every city visited had its 'Old City" which were paved with cobblestones. It was a fascinating tour of the history of this part of Europe from medieval times to present day. The days spent canoeing and trekking in the countryside offered a welcome break from the cities visited. Klaipeda and the day trip to the unique, World Heritage-listed Curonian Spit National Park was just one of the highlights of the countryside experience. A hillside of Witches was a unique collection of sculptured tree trunks depicting all manner of mythical witches and demons. Amazing to wander through this huge area with such an engaging local guide to share the stories and history of the area. Hiking and canoe through Aukstaitija National Park's dense forests and lakes provided an opportunity for not only physical activity, but also time to swim and stop to appreciate the wild flowers and other flora. Plants that are considered garden annuals here, grow wild amongst the grasses and forests of this area. But Riga was one of the most beautiful cities visited. Fragrant gardens, fountains, old and new public sculptures and the well preserved and restored art nouveau buildings, made this city enchanting and fascinating. The trip did consist of long journeys especially by bus from Warsaw to Berlin. It proved to be quite exhausting and could be well improved by a stay somewhere in between these two major cities. Overall, if interested in Russian and German occupation and the history of these Baltic countries and their struggle for independence then this is the trip for it.

From Copenhagen to Helsinki

There were 3 guides (we do not know their last names). Miguel was a very good guide, knowledgeable, attentive, no need to be aggressive to control the group. He earns respect. A suggestion for your tours. It would help us a lot if the hotels where they put us up were close to the historic center, to take advantage of the free time they give us. Of all the points visited Suomelina leaves me with doubts. Although it has its historical importance, it consumed too much of our time, which we could have taken advantage of in other important points.

Eva and Rene were amazing tour guides. Disappointed that we didn't see the Eiffel Tower at night. Several times we were dropped in town at night with not enough time to get a meal before being taken to the hotel. Some hotels were out of town with nothing within walking distance. We enjoyed the tour with our close family and now we have beautiful memories to cherish with best holidays of our lifetime spent in Europe Our best tour guide from all of them was Albert. Maria was very helpful too. Other tour guides Jose, Christina and different local tour guides were knowledgeable too but was rushing too much. We had to rush a lot from morning thru evening with stop overs in between. Some more extra time at each stops would have been appreciated but understanding time restraints it was not possible. Couple of hotels were bit far away from city centre which was bit inconvenient so be prepared to grab stuff you need in your stopovers - guide would let you know in advance. overall I think the tour was well worth it for what you paid for and what was included Accommodation was good, (beds were comfortable ) buffet Breakfast every morning were good and the buses were pretty comfortable - I would say some parts of the tour were a bit rushed and you would have liked to have spent more time at some places, however as it is a "highlights" tour of quite a few countries, time was in short supply. It did give you good idea and feel for where you would like to go back too though. The Tour guides however helpful and friendly they were, I feel could have been a bit more organized and clear in so far as communicating information on i.e times to meet back, leaving times etc.. etc.. Overall I had a good time , enjoyed what I saw and would recommend this tour as it was well worth the money.

Best of Central Europe

To be honest, part of what made the trip fantastic was our group of 12- could not have had a better group to travel with- which is clearly luck, but a piece of our group being so cohesive was Nejca, our guide. She was perfect! Available but not pushy. Laid back, but willing to assert herself to make our experience the best. She made each person in the group feel special and appreciated. Thank you, Nejca! The itinerary was quite good as well. Although there were places I could have stayed for a day longer, I think it’s important to not stay too long and feel like time is wasted on a certain place on the tour. Transportation was efficient and Nejca did a great job getting us to our destinations easily and without rushing. Accommodations were very good- with the exception of Prague. Although our apartment was nice, it was clear that the residents of Prague feel that their space is being taken over by tourists- which is clearly true. I would have preferred to have stayed in a hotel in Prague-honestly, I would have paid more for it. Other than that, cannot day enough good things about the trip! Thank you!!

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Europe

The Baltic Experience tour was a lot of fun! Our Tour Leader, Agata, was superb! The small tour size (we had six participants) meant we got to know each other well. The tour had a perfect mix of planned group activities and time to explore the sites on our own. The on-line tour description was accurate and extensive. Three cautions: Travel insurance is MANDATORY, somewhat expensive, and not included in the tour price. Many, like me, will commit to the tour not knowing this additional cost will be tacked on. Second, the tour sometimes involves significant walking (up to 30 minutes) from transportation facilities to hotels while carrying your own bags (two weeks of baggage), as well as walking tours that sometimes involve climbing as many as 800 steps. This is a tour for fairly young and fit participants. Finally, European hotels and home-stay facilities generally don't have air conditioning or screened windows, meaning sometimes in the summer you will have to choose between sleeping in hot, stuffy rooms or opening the windows for mosquitoes to enter. All that said, this was a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience and I would highly recommend it for fit, adventurous people with positive attitudes who can tolerate occasional less-than-luxurious accommodations.

Package Holidays Are Back as Fliers Choose Hassle-Free Trips

(Bloomberg) -- Flights, hotel, transfers and food in a few clicks: the package vacation is this summer’s hottest trend across Europe. 

Once seen as an outdated niche appealing mainly to baby boomers, the humble holiday bundle has mounted an unlikely comeback after almost being wiped out during the pandemic. Demand for all-inclusive packages is surging as younger travelers warm to an increasingly sophisticated offering of affordable and hassle-free holidays. 

Growth is forecast to surpass 11% globally this year, with Western Europe approaching pre-pandemic levels, according to Euromonitor International, a market research firm. The key UK market is already where it was in 2019, with Germany not far behind.

“We all thought it was dead, because of the Internet allowing people to put their own packages together,” Deutsche Lufthansa AG Chief Executive Officer Carsten Spohr said this month. “But with all these interruptions in Covid, people now love to have everything secured in one package.”

Airlines now see a bonanza in a corner of their businesses they long considered a backwater. UK budget carrier EasyJet Plc sees 35% passenger growth for its holiday business this year, while Jet2 Plc and TUI AG report rising interest in package tours. The segment has become increasingly important for Lufthansa’s growth, Spohr said.

TUI and others have evolved their offerings to cater to a younger, more Internet-savvy crowd. The choices are more varied, with experiences that go beyond the traditional sun-and-beach trip, said Caroline Bremner, senior head of travel research at Euromonitor. 

EasyJet Holidays, for example, offers guests a £162 ($206) add-on — a guided tour of Iceland’s Thingvellir National Park, where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, followed by a visit to a volcanic crater and a dip in the steaming Blue Lagoon. TUI recently added an 11-night tour of Kenya, where elephants and hippos are on display .

Travel companies are also tailoring packages to extended families with a range of interests, while customer-friendly options like installment payments, amenities for children and all-inclusive food plans represent a “safe bet” for consumers squeezed by rising prices, said Bremner. “They offer a value for money option where costs are fixed up-front.”  

Globally, package-tour revenue is forecast to reach $280 billion this year, or 86% of 2019 levels, according to Euromonitor. While the broader aviation market reached pre-Covid parity last year, according to the International Air Transport Association, package tours are coming back from a steeper drop: more than two thirds of revenue disappeared at the 2020 low. 

The segment first gained popularity in the 1960s, when vacationers sought an affordable way to sightsee or visit the beach. Jetting abroad became more accessible with modern single-aisle aircraft such as Boeing Co.’s 737, and tour operators offering leisure trips to Spain.

The market slowed in the 1990s, when holidaymakers started surfing the web to book their own flights and accommodation separately. Heavy competition led to the collapse of package-tour stalwarts Thomas Cook just before the pandemic.

Return Trip

Now airlines are finding themselves at a disadvantage if they haven’t joined in. Ryanair Holdings Plc lowered its profit outlook after online travel agents stopped selling its flights amid a long-running dispute. The Irish discounter has since formed partnerships with TUI and others to list its flights.  

In Europe, Brits and Germans have traditionally led the annual exodus from colder climates to the sunny sands of Spain, Greece and Portugal. Each side held a certain notoriety in the eye of the other: their competition for sun beds is legendary. 

The UK is the biggest European source of outbound tourists and second globally to the US. It reached 99% of 2019 levels last year, and is poised to grow 11% this year, Euromonitor projects. Germany is forecast to be at about 91% of its pre-pandemic size.

Other countries are picking up the baton, with Italy forecast to grow 26% this year and Croatia set to rise almost 16% a year through 2028, according to Euromonitor. 

TUI said it’s recently seen more demand from France, while Lufthansa’s low-cost Eurowings unit said the Czech Republic was becoming an increasingly important market.

While more younger people are being introduced to the concept, package tours are still mainly the domain of older consumers, who are attracted to the simplicity of dealing with a single provider, said Jennie Bryans, senior travel analyst at researcher Mintel.

Yet the outlook for future growth is strong, said Paul Charles, CEO of travel consultancy The PC Agency. Operators have put together better-quality packages than in the past and their marketing has improved, he said.

After Thomas Cook’s breakdown, EasyJet saw an opportunity to develop a package-tour business offering greater value and flexibility, CEO Johan Lundgren said in an interview. Now, he said, “I don’t see any limits to it.”

For Kat and Betsy Shortsleeve, that daydream became a reality when Kat Shortsleeve found out her mom had already taken time off work for a trip that fell through. With just two weeks' notice, she arranged the surprise of a lifetime.

"I just jumped on the moment, and I told her that I had a work conference for my travel company in D.C.," the 27-year-old Boston-based travel entrepreneur told "Good Morning America" of how she hatched the idea, setting plans in motion and selecting a fake destination where they'd be headed and had been together many times in the past.

Little did her mom know, until they arrived at Boston Logan International Airport together, that instead, they'd be taking a longer flight and would need some important items, like passports.

"We'd talk about how cool it would be to just show up at the airport and not realize that you're going somewhere really far away and have someone surprise you that way," Kat Shortsleeve said. "But it was so difficult to keep the surprise... the day of the trip, I was sick to my stomach when I woke up -- I was so nervous."

"I didn't ask her anything. She had the tickets on her phone. I had my driver's license, we were good to go," Betsy Shortsleeve recalled, adding that because her daughter travels often, she had full faith in her directions and planning. "We get in line and the TSA lady says to me, 'I need your passport' ... Kathryn sort of snickered a little bit and gave me the passport. So I gave it to the lady and then I was looking at her still very confused ... I didn't know that she was recording the whole debacle."

"In the lounge, [Kat] said, 'I want to I want to [record] your reaction when I tell you where we're going,'" Betsy Shortsleeve recalled of the big reveal.

Kat Shortsleeve later uploaded a video of the reveal to her TikTok account , where it has since gone viral with 1.8 million views and counting.

"We're going to two countries. We're going first to Copenhagen, and then we're going to Paris," Kat Shortsleeve says in the video, as her mom sits with her hands held to her cheeks in complete disbelief.

"No we're not," Betsy Shortsleeve replies, before her daughter hands her an international plug adapter and the two embrace in a hug.

Kat Shortsleeve told "GMA" she chose those two cities because her mom had "wanted to go to Copenhagen for a while."

"She has Danish roots and it wasn't really on the radar," she said.

Plus, she said, the two had traveled to Paris together before and "had a really lovely time when we went in the past... so I thought I would do something that she does know, that she really enjoys, and then add on something that she'd really liked to do, but just hasn't come up in the plans to actually go and make it happen."

"I was beyond shocked -- oh my goodness," Betsy Shortsleeve said of the surprise. "To spend time with my daughter in those countries and just, together, we capture each other for the time, that's just so special."

The pair said they enjoyed "lots of Danish pastries, did lots of shopping" and "some biking tours" in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, as well as wellness activities like the "spa, sauna and steam room... read our books and had lots of cappuccinos. It was really, really nice."

"I think there are a lot of places we really want to go, a lot of experiences we want to have, and I think if we don't jump on the moment when you have it in front of you that it passes you by," Kat Shortsleeve added.

Betsy Shortsleeve hailed the experience as "a trip of a lifetime," adding, "To spend time together that is just memorable, it means so, so much."

"My heart just explodes... We had so much special time together. Nothing like two girls on a trip," she added with a huge smile.

We are pausing our live coverage of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Today, Rishi Sunak announced a £500m military aid package for Ukraine - the UK's largest military pledge to the country.

In a speech in Warsaw, Poland, Mr Sunak said: "An investment in Ukraine is an investment in our security."

The prime minister also said he would put the UK's own defence industry "on a war footing" as he confirmed an increase in defence spending to 2.5% of national income by 2030.

The announcements were praised by NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg, who said the UK was "leading by example" for other NATO countries. 

Potential Russian summer offensive

Elsewhere, a commander from Ukraine's National Guard has said Russia is planning "unpleasant surprises" in a potential summer offensive.

Oleksandr Pivnenko told news outlet Liga Net that, as part of this, the National Guard does not rule out Russian attempts to target Kharkiv - the country's second-largest city.

Kharkiv and the surrounding region have recently been the focus of recent attacks from Moscow, having experienced the most intense strikes. 

Russia vows to attack 'Western weapons stores' 

The Russian defence minister said that when the US military aid package for Ukraine becomes law, Russia will "increase the intensity of attacks on logistics centres and storage bases for Western weapons".

Ukraine is set to receive provisions worth nearly $61bn.

The bill will later be voted on in the US Senate, where it is likely to pass. Joe Biden has promised to sign it into law immediately after this.

The latest appeal by detained Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich has been rejected by a Russian court. 

Mr Gershkovich was arrested on suspicion of spying while reporting in the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg on 29 March last year. 

His latest appeal was against a ruling last month that extended his detainment until 30 June.

It was heard by a Moscow court and later rejected. 

Mr Gershkovich has been accused of stealing state secrets by Russian intelligence officials, who provided no evidence to support the charge.

Both Mr Gershkovich and the WSJ deny the accusation, as does the US government, which has classified him as wrongfully detained.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has just finished speaking in Poland. 

As expected, Mr Sunak officially announced a £500m military aid package for Ukraine.

"An investment in Ukraine is an investment in our security," he said.

Mr Sunak said he would put the UK's own defence industry "on a war footing" as he confirmed an increase in defence spending to 2.5% of national income by 2030.

This goes above the 2% defence investment guideline which is set by NATO. 

The announcement was praised by NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, who said the UK was "leading by example" for other NATO countries. 

He added that the bloc did not seek conflict with Russia but would do what was necessary to keep its people safe.

Other key things said during the news conference:

• Mr Sunak said Vladimir Putin would not stop in Ukraine. Win there, and he and others would be emboldened;
• He praised the recent approval of aid for Ukraine in the US House of Representatives, but said: "We cannot keep expecting America to pay any price or bear any burden if we ourselves are unwilling to make greater sacrifices for our own security";
• The prime minister said he was determined to reform defence procurement - something which has long come under scrutiny as a potential area for savings;
• At least 5% of the defence budget to be committed to research and development to ensure the UK is at the cutting edge of modern warfare technology.

Rishi Sunak has just begun speaking at a news conference alongside Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO secretary general, in Warsaw, Poland. 

The prime minister is visiting the country to cover defence funding and support for Ukraine.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has reportedly detained a man in Kharkiv suspected of helping direct Russian aerial attacks on an elite Ukrainian military unit base.

In a post on Telegram , the agency said the man helped Moscow's forces to identify the location of the military intelligence's Kraken special unit.

The SBU claimed the individual was recruited at the beginning of the month via social media where he had been posting anti-Ukraine content. 

The man was charged under the Criminal Code of Ukraine and remains in custody, the SBU said. 

He faces up to eight years in prison. 

A second man was also arrested, according to the SBU, who they said allegedly helped "adjust Russian rocket bomb attacks on Kharkiv".

It is unknown if he has also been charged.

The UK will increase defence spending to 2.5% of national income by 2030, the prime minister is will to announce, in a hardening of military policy at a time of growing threats.

The expected rise is less ambitious than some insiders say is needed - but it will mean tens of billions of additional pounds for the armed forces over the next six years.

Rishi Sunak had previously said any extra investment would only happen when economic conditions allow. That caveat looks set to be removed.

The UK move comes at a time of escalating threats to global security posed by Russia's war in Ukraine, conflict in the Middle East and an ever-more assertive China.

A commander from Ukraine's National Guard has said Russia is planning "unpleasant surprises" in a potential summer offensive.

Speaking to news outlet Liga Net, Oleksandr Pivnenko said that, as part of a potential offensive, the National Guard does not rule out Russian attempts to target the Kharkiv - the country's second-largest city.

He said troops may achieve some success in a summer offensive by attacking "unexpected places" in the region but will not gain any strategic victories. 

"We are getting ready," Mr Pivnenko said.

"The enemy will make unpleasant surprises for us. It will operate in areas where we do not expect [them to]. But it will not achieve its goal."

Kharkiv and the surrounding region have been the focus of recent attacks from Moscow, having experienced the most intense strikes. 

As we have been reporting, Rishi Sunak is set to announce a new £500m military aid package for Ukraine.

The aid is expected to include more than 400 vehicles and more than 1,600 strike and air defence missiles. 

How will these extra provisions help Ukraine?

Our military analyst Michael Clarke  says the aid will make a difference politically, but won't come close to what the US or other European countries can offer militarily. 

"Britain is the first European country since the US's announcement on Saturday that they are going forward with the aid package," Clarke says.

"Britain is putting in less than 1% of the US package but what we are offering is what we have got that the Ukrainians say they want.

"What they really need is the things we don't really have, good old-fashioned air defence systems."

Storm Shadow missiles

Clarke says what might make a difference to the Ukrainians are Shadow Storm long-range precision-guided missiles that troops have found useful in the past. 

"I suspect we are now dipping into our own stores and MBDA - who make the missiles - certainly can't make the number that we are now giving," Clarke adds. 

"I suspect we are giving some from our own stock and it will take a couple of years to build up again. This is a fair sacrifice."

Husky vehicles

Also being given are 160 Husky vehicles, which Clarke says are "unglamorous but make a difference when fighting a battle".

"These are mine resistant vehicles that are useful around the combat zone," he says.

The UK has also pledged four million rounds of ammunition, which Clarke says is not enough, but other European countries are finding ways of getting more munitions.

Rishi Sunak has landed in Warsaw, where he will meet Donald Tusk, the Polish prime minister, and Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO secretary general.

Joining Mr Sunak on the visit is Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor, and Grant Shapps, the defence secretary.

During the journey Mr Sunak addressed the UK's latest military aid package to Ukraine. 

He told reporters he was "very proud" that the UK has always led on support for Ukraine.

"We are Europe's largest defence spender and one of the few countries that's consistently met the 2% [of GDP] NATO spending pledge, and today's action is another example of us leading by example," he said.

The Russian defence minister has said his troops will increase the intensity of strikes on logistics centres and the storage depots of Western weapons in Ukraine.

Sergei Shoigu addressed the new US military aid package for Ukraine, worth nearly $61bn, in remarks to defence officials.

In an apparent reaction to the aid package, Mr Shoigu said: "In proportion to the threats posed by the United States and its allies, we will continue to improve the composition and structure of the armed forces and increase the production of the most popular weapons and military equipment.

"We will increase the intensity of attacks on logistics centres and storage bases for Western weapons." 

As part of the package, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, Kyiv will soon receive more long-range ATACMS missile systems.

US officials said the aid will also include ammunition supplies and interceptors for air defence systems.

The in-demand aid package will be voted on in the US Senate later today, where it is likely to pass. Joe Biden has promised to sign it into law immediately after this.
