UAE residence cancelled

How to cancel your residence visa in the UAE

  • Basic Information

A UAE residence visa grants an individual the legal right to live, work, invest and access many government services and financial facilities in the country. However, it must be cancelled officially if you plan to leave the country permanently. Here is everything you need to know about the UAE visa cancellation process.

BASIC INFORMATION ON THE UAE VISA CANCELLATION PROCEDURE

Who can cancel your residence visa in the uae.

The individual/organisation who has sponsored you can cancel your residence visa. If you hold a UAE property investor visa or any other type of investor visa, you can initiate the process on your own.

HOW CAN A COMPANY APPLY FOR THE UAE RESIDENCE VISA CANCELLATION?

If your sponsor is a company, they must first apply for the cancellation of your labour card and contract at the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). Your signature is mandatory on this application. Once they get a response from MOHRE, they can apply for visa cancellation via the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP).

Your company must cancel your work permit as well. However, this can’t be done without a letter signed by you stating that you have received your dues, gratuity, repatriation expenses and other benefits that you and your company agreed upon.

VISA CANCELLATION VIA FEDERAL AUTHORITY FOR IDENTITY, CITIZENSHIP, CUSTOMS & PORT SECURITY (ICP)

Cancelling UAE residence visa online

The UAE visa cancellation process takes around 48 hours. However, there may be exceptions depending on public holidays or employer terms.

The validity of the visa depends upon its type and sponsor. If you hold a residence visa, refer to the Dubai visa status check by passport number to confirm its validity.

If you have a UAE residence visa and have been outside the country for more than six months, your visa will be cancelled. In this case, you cannot enter the country with your residence visa and will have to either get a visit visa or visa-on-arrival, depending on your nationality and country of residence.

However, if you’re employed by a company in the UAE and leave without resigning and following procedures, you risk being reported as an absconding person. This can lead to a travel ban, meaning you will be unable to enter the UAE and risk being arrested upon entry.

You must also pay off any loans, bills and other liabilities before leaving, as not doing these can risk legal consequences. We recommend following this procedure and collecting your visa cancellation proof (a stamp or paper) before leaving the UAE.

FAQs about the UAE visa cancellation process

What is the uae visa cancellation grace period.

The grace period to leave the UAE after the cancellation of the residency visa is between 60 and 180 days, depending upon the visa category.

Here is a complete breakdown of the grace period:

  • Golden Visa/Green Visa holders and their family members
  • Widows/Divorcees
  • Students (who have finished their studies)
  • Skilled professionals (first/ second level as per MOHRE classification)
  • Skilled professionals (third level as per MOHRE classification)
  • Property visa holders
  • Normal residencies
  • Other categories (visa-on-arrival holders and Prepaid visit visa.)

Staying in Dubai after the grace period ends will accrue a fine of AED 50 per day.

WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY EMIRATES ID WHEN THE RESIDENCE IS CANCELLED?

Previously, one could keep their Emirates ID even after cancelling UAE Residence. However, you will be asked to submit your Emirates ID to the GDRFA after cancelling your UAE Residence now. You must also submit your Emirates ID if switching jobs and changing your sponsor.

Note that after cancelling your UAE residence visa, your employer will be covering your medical insurance for the duration of the grace period. Since medical insurance is mandatory for living in the UAE, this will usually be active throughout your grace period.

CAN I RENEW MY UAE TOURIST VISA?

Yes, you can, given that you follow all the protocols for a Dubai tourist visa extension .

CAN I CANCEL MY UAE RESIDENCE VISA IF I’M OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY?

If you’re on an employment visa, contact your employers and request they cancel it. Talk to them about any liabilities or penalties, if applicable, make sure they cancel your residence. If your employer refuses to cancel your residence visa, contact the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) to resolve the issue.

Please note that if you work for a freezone company in the UAE, both employer and employee must meet at the company’s headquarters to terminate the contract. For this, you should carry your passport and Emirates ID and get your UAE residence cancelled.

If you want to cancel a family member’s visa (dependent visa), you can easily do so without needing them in the country. All you need is a copy of the passport, Emirates ID, and the application typed out. You can do this from one of the typing centres in Dubai, and it will cost you AED 266, along with additional typing charges.

DO I HAVE TO EXIT THE UAE TO EXTEND MY STAY AFTER THE GRACE PERIOD?

After your UAE residence visa has been cancelled, you do not have to leave the country to extend your stay. You can apply for a tourist visa while in the country and pay the required charges (depending on the days you intend to stay).

That brings an end to our guide on the UAE visa cancellation process. Make sure to learn the latest guidelines for residency visas in the UAE before making any final decision. If you have any questions regarding your UAE residence visa cancellation, contact the General Directory of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) at 600-522-222.

Cancellation and Extension of Unused UAE Visit Visas

All international travelers planning to visit the UAE are now required to either cancel or extend their unused visit visas.

If travelers are unable to enter the UAE within the visa’s validity period, they can apply for an extension of an additional 60 days through the immigration portal.

The extension carries a fee of AED 200. Alternatively, if travelers do not wish to extend their visit visa, they must cancel it through the immigration portal.

It is important to note that the immigration system no longer automatically deletes old visa requests; applicants must request cancellation themselves.

Failure to cancel the previous unused visit visa will hinder individuals from applying for a new UAE visit visa.

In conclusion, canceling a UAE residence visa involves adhering to specific requirements, submitting the necessary documents, following the outlined procedures, and paying the applicable fees.

It is crucial to complete the process within the designated time frames to avoid any complications. By familiarizing yourself with the guidelines and utilizing the recommended resources, individuals can navigate the UAE visa cancellation process effectively.

Simple Guide to the Visa Cancellation Process in UAE

Main Points

Visa Cancellation: A Simple Guide

When you have a residence visa for the UAE, it means that you have legal permission to live in the country for a specified period. This visa comes with certain responsibilities and benefits. If you decide to leave the UAE permanently, it’s essential to inform the authorities and follow the proper procedure to cancel your residence visa. Here’s why:

  • Compliance with Laws: Every country has specific regulations regarding visas and residency. By canceling your residence visa, you are adhering to the UAE’s legal requirements. Failure to do so might result in penalties or complications if you ever decide to return or if you have any pending financial or legal matters in the UAE.
  • Avoid Future Issues: If you don’t cancel your visa and leave without notifying the authorities, it could lead to administrative challenges. For instance, if your visa remains active, there might be implications related to visa renewals, fines, or even legal repercussions when you attempt to re-enter or engage with the UAE in any capacity in the future.
  • Clearance and Peace of Mind: Canceling your visa officially ensures that you’ve settled all your obligations in the UAE. It gives you peace of mind knowing that you’ve done everything by the book, and there are no unresolved matters related to your residency.
  • Protect Your Sponsor: If you were sponsored by a company or individual in the UAE, canceling your visa is also essential for them. It releases them from the obligation of being responsible for you as a resident, ensuring that they don’t face any unexpected liabilities or issues because of your prolonged stay without proper authorization.

Canceling your residence visa when leaving the UAE is a matter of legal compliance, ensuring clarity for both you and the UAE authorities, and maintaining a clean record for any future engagements with the country.

Who Can Cancel Your Visa?

The process of canceling a residence visa in UAE involves specific parties who have the authority or responsibility to initiate and complete this procedure. Here’s a breakdown of who can cancel your visa:

  • In the UAE, many expatriates obtain their residence visas through sponsorship. This sponsor can be an individual, such as a family member or a friend, or a company that has employed the individual.
  • The sponsor is primarily responsible for the visa holder during their stay in the UAE. This responsibility includes facilitating the visa application process, ensuring the visa holder’s compliance with UAE laws, and managing any visa-related matters.
  • Given this responsibility, the sponsor has the authority and means to initiate the visa cancellation process when needed, such as when the visa holder decides to leave the UAE permanently.
  • The UAE offers an investor visa, which is designed for individuals who have invested a significant amount of money in the country, typically in business ventures.
  • Since investor visa holders have a more independent status in the UAE, given their substantial contribution to the country’s economy, they have the autonomy to manage many aspects of their residency, including the cancellation process.
  • Therefore, if you hold an investor visa, you have the flexibility and authority to handle the cancellation of your visa on your own, without necessarily relying on a sponsor.

Steps for Company-Sponsored Visa Cancellation:

To initiate the company-sponsored visa cancellation process, follow these essential steps:

  • The company should first cancel your labour card and work contract at MOHRE.
  • You must sign this application.
  • Once approved by MOHRE, the company applies for visa cancellation via ICP.
  • You’ll need to confirm you’ve received all due payments and benefits before they cancel your work permit.

After canceling, there are specific grace periods for different visa categories: 180 days for Golden Visa holders, widows/divorcees, completed students, and certain professionals; 90 days for some skilled professionals and property visa holders; 60 days for regular residents; and 30 days for visa-on-arrival categories.

If one overstays beyond their respective grace period, they’ll incur a daily fine of AED 50. For those considering renewing a tourist visa, it’s possible by adhering to the UAE’s renewal guidelines. However, the validity of a residence visa can vary depending on its type and sponsor. It’s crucial always to consult the most recent UAE visa regulations before making any decisions or taking actions.

How to Cancel a UAE Visa in 2024

Cancelling a UAE visa in 2024 is a straightforward process, but it is essential to follow the appropriate steps and ensure all requirements are met. The cancellation process may vary slightly depending on the type of visa, but the general steps are as follows:

  • Obtain a visa cancellation application form from the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) or download it from their website. In Dubai, visit an AMER center to cancel your visa. Important! If you live in the UAE with your family and sponsor their Family visas, you need to cancel the Family visas first and then apply for the cancellation of your own visa.
  • Complete the form with accurate information and attach the required documents.
  • Submit the completed form and supporting documents to the GDRFA or a registered typing center. In Dubai, it is an AMER center. Note that visas must always be cancelled at the same location where they were initially issued.
  • Pay the visa cancellation fee which is around AED 500.
  • Wait for the Visa Cancellation Paper sent to your email, which is typically issued within a few days. After receiving it, you have 28 days to either change your visa or depart the country. If needed, this period can be extended up to 60 days.

The required documents for visa cancellation may vary depending on the type of visa and your specific situation. Generally, the following documents are required:

  • Completed visa cancellation application form
  • Original Emirates ID
  • Original passport and a copy
  • Original visa or a copy
  • Clearance letter from the MOHRE (for work permit and work visa cancellation)
  • Sponsor's passport copy (for dependent family members)

If you hold a UAE work permit and work visa and wish to cancel it, the process involves coordination between you, your employer, and the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). To cancel your work permit and work visa, follow these steps:

  • Notify your employer of your intention to cancel the work permit and work visa.
  • Your employer should initiate the cancellation process with the MOHRE.
  • The MOHRE will issue a clearance letter confirming the cancellation.
  • Proceed with the general visa cancellation process outlined above, using the clearance letter as one of the required documents.

If you are changing jobs within the UAE, your current employer must cancel your work permit. After that, you need to cancel your current work visa and apply for a new visa under your new job contract. This process is similar to the one outlined in the previous section. It is essential to coordinate with both your current and future employers to ensure a smooth transition and avoid any legal issues. Remember that you have 28 days for obtaining a new visa. Otherwise, there may be fines.

If you have dependent family members (spouse, children, or elderly parents) under your sponsorship, their visas must be cancelled before you cancel your visa. The sponsor must initiate the cancellation process for each dependent family member's visa. The process is similar to the general visa cancellation steps outlined earlier in this guide.

If you have been outside the UAE for longer than six months, your residence visa may be considered invalid. In such cases, you or your sponsor must apply for visa cancellation at the GDRFA office in the emirate where the visa was issued or in an AMER center in Dubai. Cancel your visas on time to avoid fines!

3. Understanding how to cancel each type of visa

As we mentioned before, the process to cancel your visa will vary depending on the type of visa you hold. So, in this regard, you should know how to proceed with the cancellation depending on your unique case.

3.1 How to cancel an employment visa?

If you have arrived in the UAE under an employment visa , your employer is in charge of cancelling your residency and your labour card.

In this regard, your employer is the one that has to pay the visa cancellation fee in Dubai. So, your employer has to go through the following:

  • Print the application at a Tasheel or Amer Center, or online.
  • Sign the application as your sponsor.
  • Get your documentation to initiate the process.

3.2 See how to cancel a family visa

If you bring your family with you, they need to have a family visa to be able to reside in the UAE. Generally, their visa duration is the same as yours. So, if you are going to exit the UAE, you have to cancel your visa and cancel theirs too.

You can go to a typing centre or an AMER centre to cancel it. In this regard, you have to take the following documentation with you:

  • Your original passport and your dependent’s original passport.
  • Original Emirates ID.
  • Filled out application.

4. What is the Dubai visa cancellation fee?

Dubai visa cancellation fee

How much visa cancellation fee in Dubai? This is a common question that many UAE residents ask themselves.

However, the Dubai visa cancellation fee varies depending on the type of visa and the channel you use to cancel it.

So, here we have the most common fees for each visa type:

  • Family visa cancellation fee in Dubai: AED 200-250.
  • Employment visa cancellation fee in Dubai: AED 100-200.
  • Tourist visa cancellation fee: AED 150-200.

In terms of the channel you use to cancel your visa, here we have the fees:

  • ICP Website: order fee 50 AED + E-Services fee AED 10. You can only pay using your credit card
  • GDRFA Website: Urgent service fee of 100 AED. Innovation fee AED 10. In case of submission through ZAJEL Courier Center you have to pay a printing fee of AED 100.

5. Checking your visa cancellation status

Once you have paid the Dubai visa cancellation fee and submitted your application, you have to wait until your visa gets cancelled. Usually, the cancellation may take up to 48 hours.

However, if by any chance there is a document missing, you have to submit it within 30 days or your application will get cancelled.

And, just as you can check the validity of your UAE Visa , you can also check the status of your cancellation.

So, if you want to check to confirm that your visa has been cancelled, or if you are outside the UAE and you have not properly cancelled your visa and you would like to check if it is cancelled or not, you can follow the next steps:

  • Go to the ICP website.
  • Click on the tab “passport information.”
  • Choose Visa or Residency.
  • Provide your passport number.
  • Enter the passport expiry date.
  • Choose your nationality and click on “search.”

After that, you will see all the details of your visa expiration and status, including if it has been cancelled or not.

6. Avoid automatic cancellation of your Dubai Visa

Regardless of the reason why you are planning to leave the UAE, it is mandatory to cancel your visa before you go. In this regard, the Dubai visa cancellation fee is not so expensive, so there is no excuse for leaving without cancelling your visa.

Additionally, if you exit the UAE and stay outside for more than consecutive 6 months, this will cancel your visa automatically. What is more, if you do not enter before those 6 months, you cannot enter later using the same visa.

And, the worst part is that you can face a travel ban. This means that you may not be able to apply for a new visa or enter the UAE again.

So, if you are under an employment visa and you leave the country without requesting visa cancellation, your employer may report you as an absconding person and that will lead to a ban.

Therefore, it is best to cancel your visa so you avoid this type of issue. And, this way, you can apply for a new visa in the future.

7. What about the grace periods for visa cancellation?

Although you have to cancel your visa as soon as possible, you do not have to worry because you get a grace period. This grace period is an established time you are allowed to stay in the UAE once your visa has expired so you can pay your debts, and settle everything before leaving.

Similarly, once you cancel your visa, you also get a grace period so you can arrange your flight and other aspects. But, you have to be careful with the grace period after visa cancellation , because you may end up incurring overstaying if you are not aware.

This is why it is advisable to know exactly the date up to when you are allowed to stay in the UAE.

So, once you pay the Dubai visa cancellation fee, you have to plan your next steps so you do not have to end up paying an overstay fine in UAE .

If you are unsure about the grace period for your type of visa, here we have the different categories:

7.1 180-day grace period

Holders of the following types of visa get 6 months in the UAE after the visa cancellation:

  • Golden visa and their dependents.
  • Widows or divorcees.
  • Green visa and their dependents.
  • Individuals under a student visa and have completed their studies.

7.2 90-day grace period

Holders of a Property Visa can get a grace period of 90 days.

7.3 10-day grace period

Individuals under these two types of visit visas can get a 10-day grace period to arrange their flight back:

  • Visa on arrival.
  • Prepaid visit visa.

8. What can you do if you want to stay more in the UAE?

Even once you have applied for a visa cancellation, whether of your freelance visa, family visa, or any other, you can take further steps to continue staying in the UAE.

You have several options available during your grace period, such as the following:

  • Fly to a nearby country: you can fly out and apply for a new UAE visit visa or tourist visa, or any other type that you would like.
  • Airport-to-airport visa change: you can travel to another country and get a new tourist visa and fly back to the UAE. This can allow you to extend your stay in the UAE.
  • Apply for a new visa: if you are eligible, you can apply for any of the visa schemes in the UAE, such as a property visa, job seeker visa, or any other. Make sure to review the terms and conditions so you can determine if you can apply for any of the visas.
