UB40 are coming to Zimbabwe for the first time in 37 years

ub40 zim tour

The last time UB40 came to Zimbabwe, the country was still finding its feet as a republic, following independence in 1980.

It was May 1982, and the group came for two performances, one in Harare and the other in Bulawayo.

The Herald reported that the first one set for Bulawayo was washed away, but they were able to play the second at City Sports Centre in Harare.

That was epic. They even hung out with Devera Ngwena Jazz Band

After that, they held two more shows at Rufaro Stadium in 1986. The late Olive Mtukudzi performed at that show.

Now Ngoma NeHosho have just announced that the band will make it to this side, in May again. This time 25 May at Old Hararians Sports Club, Harare.

And they have founding member Ali Campbell coming too.

Tickets are going on sale Friday, 3 March at Tech Tools and Pariah State Avondale and Pomona, as well as the new Upstate at Highland Park.

Admission is USD60.

UB40 in Zimbabwe | Ali Campbell and Full Band Ready to Rock Harare

UB40 in Zimbabwe | Ali Campbell and full band has arrived in Zimbabwe and will rock Old Hararians Sports Club on Africa Day.

UB40 , the renowned English reggae and pop band led by Ali Campbell, has made a highly anticipated arrival in Zimbabwe.

The group is preparing for their much-awaited concert at the Old Hararians Sports Club in Harare on Thursday.

Expressing his excitement, Campbell joyfully stated, “I am really happy to be back in Zimbabwe and I cannot wait to do the show. I hope many of you come as you possibly can. Come sing and dance if you love reggae music.”

The enthusiasm of his statement was palpable, reflecting the anticipation surrounding their performance.

Interestingly, some members of UB40 have previously visited Zimbabwe as part of the original lineup of the band.

They delivered a memorable performance at Rufaro Stadium several decades ago. Notably, the late Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi had the honor of warming up the stage for the Birmingham-based musical ensemble during their previous visit.

This time, local fans are in for a treat as UB40 returns to Zimbabwe since maiden performance in 1982.

The nine-piece band, which gained prominence in the 1980s, has remained an iconic symbol of British music over the years.

Founded in 1978 with Ali Campbell on lead vocals, UB40 became a major brand with cover versions of timeless classics and hit songs such as “Red Red Wine”, “I Got You Babe” (a duet between Campbell and Chrissie Hynde) and “Falling In Love With You”.

UB40 has achieved remarkable success, selling over 70 million records to date.

Their music legacy spans over four decades, and the band continues to captivate audiences with their signature sound.

“We will always play the classics, like ‘Red Red Wine’ and ‘(I Can’t Help) Falling In Love With You,’ but we like to change the beginning and end of the show,” said Campbell.

“We will play ‘Lean On Me’ and maybe add three or four new songs. The band members are all fantastic musicians, and we have climbed back up to the biggest venues in the past 12 years.”

The concert organizer, Walter Wanyanya of Ngoma Nehosho Promotions said “Instantly recognisable as the true voice of UB40, Ali and the band are raring to go and ready to play in Zimbabwe again. The band was in Harare back in 1982. You won’t want to miss this iconic concert.”

Tickets for the concert, priced at US$60 and have been on sale for a while.

Zimbabwean fans of UB40 can look forward to an unforgettable night of reggae and pop as the band takes the stage once again, showcasing their timeless hits and introducing new melodies to their loyal audience.

This one-night-only concert promises to be an iconic event that music enthusiasts won’t want to miss.

The nine-piece band, which was in the country about two years after Zimbabwe gained its independence, confirmed their second coming on Africa Day (May 25) at Old Hararians Sports Club.

Undeniably one of Britain’s most iconic bands, UB40 made a name for themselves in the 1980s and their fame has carried on through the years.

“We will always play the classics, like Red Red Wine and (I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You, but we like to change the beginning and end of the show. We will play Lean On Me and maybe add three or four new songs. The band members are all fantastic musicians and we have climbed back up to the biggest venues in the past 12 years,” Ali Campbell said in a statement.

The UB40 Live in Harare Zimbabwe concert organiser Walter Wanyanya of Ngoma Nehosho promotions yesterday told NewsDay Life & Style that tickets for the concert selling at US$60 will go on sale from tomorrow.

“Instantly recognisable as the true voice of UB40, Ali and the band are raring to go and ready to play in Zimbabwe again. The band was in Harare back in 1982. You won’t want to miss this iconic concert,” Wanyanya said.

“One night only in Harare, tickets will be available from these outlets; Techtools Avondale, Pariah State Borrowdale, Pariah State Avondale and Pariah State Highland Park.”

Formed in December 1978 in Birmingham, England, UB40 has sold over 70 million records to date as the band continues to curate and build on a legacy that dates back over four decades to the group’s formative days.

Zimbabwe: Travers’ Death Revives Memories of Ub40 Zim Tour

  • No Comments on Zimbabwe: Travers’ Death Revives Memories of Ub40 Zim Tour

Brian Travers, founder member and saxophonist of the hugely successful UK reggae band, UB40, who died on Sunday, will be remembered in Zimbabwe for the tour the band held in 1982.

Travers, who suffered from cancer, died at his home in Birmingham at the age of 62.

Apart from the popular 1982 tour, UB40 is also known in Zimbabwe because of some of its hit songs which topped the local charts during the time they were released.

Songs that endeared UB40 with many include “Red Red Wine”, “Kingston Town”, “Homely Girl”, Falling in Love With You” and “Cherry on Baby”.

As a founding member of UB40, Travers was an important part of the band during its tour of Zimbabwe in 1982 where shows were lined up for Bulawayo and Harare.

According to The Herald of May 7, 1982, the show in Bulawayo was washed away, with the stage caving in after heavy rains.

The band successfully held its next performance at the City Sports Centre in Harare.

“It had been a long wait particularly after their eagerly-awaited performances in Bulawayo limped to a standstill last Friday when rain caved in a stage canopy, snapped one of the supports and a wind gust brought all the standing water on the electric equipment,” reported The Herald.

The band, which was just about to appear on stage, had to abandon the Bulawayo show.

Travers is quoted by The Herald commenting on the incident in Bulawayo saying: “The whole thing was OK. Just that 150 gallons of water on the microphones stopped it.”

After the City Sports Centre show, UB40 held two more successful shows at Rufaro Stadium. Announcing Travers’ death, the band said in a statement saying: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our comrade, brother, founding UB40 member and musical legend Brian David Travers.

“Brian passed away yesterday (Sunday) evening after a long and heroic battle with cancer. Our thoughts are with Brian’s wife, Lesley, his daughter, Lisa, and son Jamie.”

RevenueCat raises $12M Series C as it expands its subscription management to the web

RevenueCat, a top subscription management platform for apps that monetize via in-app purchases, is now flush with new capital as it expands to the web. The company has closed on a $12 million Series C led by Adjacent, following the launch of a new product, RevenueCat Billing, that allows web app developers to integrate subscription purchases into any website. The timing of the product's launch is notable, as it arrives amid the implementation of the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA) regulation, which is forcing Apple to open the iPhone and the App Store to new competition.
