Apply UK Visa from Canada: Requirements and Guidelines

While UK tops the popularity chart of travel destinations for most Canadians, did you know that it is the most favorite haunt of those in the 60+ age group? Not only that, 60% of Canadians make a repeat visit at least once in their lifetime, and half of UK’s Canadian visitors come from Ontario. The reason for Canadians’ high affinity towards UK is the region’s ancient history and medieval architecture. Now that’s a thought encouraging enough to get you packed for the United Kingdom!

Travelling to UK in Covid Times

It is true that the Covid pandemic has taken away a large chunk of the global traveling spirit. However, visiting UK from Canada is still pretty smooth. What makes things even easier is that the WHO has not included Canada in the list of red-flagged countries. So, only basic prohibitions are applicable for Canadians travelling to the UK. The nature of prohibitions will depend upon which region in the UK you enter – whether England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Also, you should not have traveled to any of the red-flagged in the 10 days preceding arrival into UK. If so, you will be subjected to tighter, more uncomfortable restrictions!

Whether your port of entry is England , Scotland , or Wales , it is mandatory to self-quarantine for 10 days and undergo two Covid-19 tests during this time. Self-quarantining in Scotland should strictly be within the confines of a Managed Quarantine Facility, whereas for Wales , you can do so at the hotel/chosen accommodation or Managed Quarantine Facility.

Specifically, for Northern Ireland , you need to show negative COVID-19 test results during immigration. These results should not be more than 3 days old from the date of departure. Following negative Covid proof, fill and submit your journey and contact information through the Passenger Locator Form, after which you should self-isolate.

Applying for a UK Visa from Canada

You can obtain a UK Visa for tourism, studies, business / work engagements, marriage, medical treatment, government work, family reunion, or transit.

In fact, visiting UK as a short-term tourist, doesn’t require a visa at all! However, you will still have to present your passport with enough validity to cover your stay, confirmed hotel reservation and travel/health insurance . However, if you have a criminal record or have been refused entry on any previous occasion, then you will need a Standard Visitor Visa for whatever duration you plan to stay. You can confirm your eligibility for a UK Visa by visiting official website . Simply select the purpose of your visit from the list and you will find all the necessary information.

  • So, if your social/travel status makes you a candidate for a UK Visa, start by visiting https://www.gov.uk/apply-to-come-to-the-uk . Click the Visa Application Link most suited to your purpose of visit. For example, if you are visiting UK as a tourist, simply click the Standard Visitor Visa link to get detailed information on eligibility, acceptable duration of stay, visa fees, etc.
  • Next, prepare your application. This is an online process, wherein both application submission and fee payment are done electronically. At this stage you might also have to submit test results for TB, and pay the health surcharge, if applicable to you.
  • In case you choose to visit the VAC, first book an appointment online. At the VAC, you will have to submit your fingerprints, photograph, documents, and passport.
  • If you use the app, you can do so within the comfort of your home. The app will help you submit your profile photo and upload the documents digitally. However, the documents will have to be scanned first.

Documentation:

  • Canadian Passport with at least 2 blank pages and validity covering duration of stay.
  • Proof of sufficient funds

Preparing for your UK Trip!

The waiting time for the Visa starts from the day you submit your biometrics and documentation. The decision is fastest if your purpose of travel is tourism, holiday, marriage, or business meeting, and typically takes 3 weeks.

The UK Visa comes in the form of a sticker or vignette pasted in your passport. It contains information about your Visa Type, Visa Validity, and other Terms & Conditions. You must ascertain the accuracy of these facts and figures immediately to avoid immigration hassles after entering UK.

The only chances your Visa Application could get rejected is if you failed to show sufficient proof of financial support or missed even one document from the checklist. In either case you can re-apply and furnish all documents as per protocol.

IN THIS SECTION

There are many reasons why you might require a UK visitor visa to come to the UK, from seeing the sights to seeing friends or family.

If you’re from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, the Standard Visitor Visa allows you to visit the UK, usually for a period of up to 6 months.

The UK Visitor visa requires an application to be made from outside the UK, which will be assessed to assess whether you meet the requirements under the visitor rules and qualify as a genuine visitor. You will need to provide supporting documents that prove you qualify for a visitor visa. Failure to show that you meet the visa requirements will result in a refusal and loss of your application fee.

What is a UK visitor visa?

The UK Standard Visitor visa replaced a number of previous categories of visitor visas. It allows visitors to come to Britain for a short stay for a number of permissible reasons, including leisure (for tourism, visiting family and friends), for  business-related activities or sporting or creative events, and other reasons such as receiving private medical treatment.

It is not possible to switch into a different visa category from the visitor visa once you are in the UK; you would need to return to your home country and apply from there for a different visa.

How long does a UK visitor visa last?

The visitor visa generally lasts for 6 months.

You can apply to stay longer if you’re coming to the UK for private medical treatment (up to 11 months) or you’re an academic on sabbatical and coming to the UK for research (up to 12 months) but you will also need to apply for a biometric residence permit.

Under the Approved Destination Status (ADS) agreement, Chinese nationals are allowed to enter the UK with an approved tour group for up to 30 days.

Long term visitor visa

The long-term visitor visa may be available if you are looking to make frequent visits over a longer period, such as 2, 5 or even 10 years, however you can only stay in the UK for up to 6 months at a time.

What are the permitted activities for visitors?

The visitor rules specify activities that are allowed under the route. The following are permissible activities:

  • Tourism, for example on a holiday
  • Visit family or friends
  • Volunteering for up to 30 days with a registered charity
  • Transiting through the UK to travel to another country
  • Certain business activities, for example attending a meeting or interview
  • Taking part in a school exchange programme
  • Undertake a recreational course of up to 30 days, for example a dance course
  • Study, do a placement or take an exam – this cannot be the main purpose of the visit and is limited to a maximum of 30 days
  • Visiting as an academic, senior doctor or dentist
  • For medical reasons

You are not allowed to do the following under a visitor visa:

  • Undertake paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person
  • Claim benefits or access public funds
  • Reside in the UK for long periods using frequent and/or successive visits
  • Get married or register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership (instead, apply for the  Marriage Visitor Visa )

It may be that the visitor visa is not appropriate and alternative immigration options will need to be considered. For example, the permitted paid engagement visa may apply if a UK company is paying you to come to the UK as an expert in your profession.

Visitors should also prepare to travel with supporting documents as they may be asked to present proof of eligibility by UK border officials.

UK visitor visa requirements

The visitor visa is limited in its eligibility. Your stay must generally be for no longer than 6 months and you have to leave the UK by the expiry date.

Your reason for travel will also be critical to your eligibility and it will be important that you understand what is allowed under the UK visitor visa to ensure you do not breach these conditions for the duration of your stay in the UK.

Applying for the UK visitor visa

Applicants must ensure they comply with the regulations and evidence their eligibility through the visa application process.

To apply for the UK visitor visa, you will need to be outside the UK. You complete the online application form and provide supporting documents to evidence your status as a genuine visitor. You will be required to attend an appointment at a visa appointment centre in your country of residence, where you will be interviewed about your application and your biometric information will be taken.

As part of your visa application you will need to prove to the caseworker that you will not be staying for more than 6 months and that you have enough money to maintain yourself (and any dependants travelling with you) during your time in the UK and to fund your return travel.

Supporting documents

Your circumstances will dictate the exact documents to provide with your application to support your case. As a minimum, you will need to verify your identity with your current passport or other valid travel identification, valid for the whole of your stay in the UK and with a blank page for the visa.

Additional supporting documents should also be provided to prove:

  • Planned travel dates and itinerary including accommodation details
  • Personal information such as home address and parents’ names
  • Travel history (past 10 years)
  • Work information such as your employer’s name and address
  • Contact information of the people you will visit
  • You have a genuine relationship with the person you are visiting
  • Details of any convictions
  • Intention to leave the UK on visa expiry. Evidence could include proof of a job or studies in your home country, or family living in your home country.
  • Sufficient funds to support you and your dependants in the UK for the duration of your visit. This could be funded by you of the person you are visiting in the UK. You will not be allowed to access public funds. Proof should include recent bank statements and payslips. An estimate of the total cost of the trip should be provided, as well as details of your income.

Any documents not in English or Welsh must be provided as certified translations.

After completing the form, you will need to attend a visa application centre overseas to have your fingerprints and photograph taken.

Visitor visa processing times

Under normal Home Office processing standards , visitor visa applications from overseas usually takes around 3 weeks. However, ongoing delays in processing services mean visit visa applications are currently taking 6 weeks, and in some cases longer.

You can apply up to three months before your intended date of travel. Fast tracked processing within 5 working days is available in some visa application centres for a premium fee.

How much does a visitor visa cost?

Currently, the UK visitor visa costs £100 for the standard 6 month stay. If you are travelling for medical reasons, the cost is £200 for six months, or £200 for academic visitors .

Longer-term visit visas cost £376 for the 2-year visit visa, £670 for the 5-year visit visa or £837 for the 10-year visit visa.

Can you stay in the UK for longer than six months?

Generally speaking, all Standard UK visitor visas are short-term visas with a six-month maximum stay cap. Immigration regulations also prevent you from getting around this restriction by utilising a guest visa or making many, frequent, or consecutive trips, although you are free to enter and exit the UK whenever you like while your visa is still in effect.

However, citizens of China, Pakistan, India, and other non-EEA nations can apply for a long-term visit visa in order to go to the UK. These are chargeable extras that can be reserved for terms of two, five, or 10 years.

Be aware that you are still limited to a single visit lasting no longer than six months with these visas. You may, however, enter and exit the UK more than once throughout the permitted time. If you know you’ll need to visit the UK repeatedly over the course of a set amount of time, applying for a long-term visitor visa in the UK is a terrific option.

Academic visits from outside the EEA and people seeking private medical care in the UK do have another option for a longer stay. The Biometric Residence Permit is what it is called (BRP). You will need to provide biometric data about yourself, including your fingerprints, a photo, your immigration status, and more, but doing so will extend your stay in the UK over six months. This procedure, called biometric enrolment, still necessitates the presentation of proof of adequate financial support for your stay.

Visitor visa application refused?

If your UK visitor visa application. has been refused, your options could include reapplying and making a new application; submitting an appeal, where the grounds are on human rights; applying for a Judicial Review of the decision.

Your options will depend on your specific circumstances. Take professional advice to decide what you should do next.

Need assistance?

Travellers to the UK should note that even with a valid visitor visa in place, you may still be questioned at the UK border by immigration officials, to verify that you are a genuine visitor and will comply with the visitor visa rules. Where officials are concerned that you may stay longer than your visa date, or if your activities are prohibited under the visitor rules, you may be denied entry.

The UK Long-Term Standard Visitor Visa

Frequently asked questions.

If you hold a valid Canadian passport, you do not require a visitor visa for international travel to the United Kingdom.

The entry requirements state a United Kingdom tourist visa is not required for citizens of Canada for a stay of up to 180 days or six months. However, the UK government now has an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement, which means Canadian citizens would need to apply for an ETA from 2024 when they want to visit Canada.

However, if you live in Canada via a different type of visa or immigration allowance but are a national of a different country and do not hold a valid Canadian passport per the government of Canada, you will need to follow the immigration rules set by the UK government.

Also, the Standard Visitor Visa. This visa is for individuals travelling to the UK for tourism, visiting family, obtaining medical treatment, or for professional purposes.

Eligibility for the UK Visitor Visa

In order to be eligible for a UK Visitor Visa, you must be able to provide evidence of the reason for your travel to the UK as well as proof that you do not intend to stay for a period of longer than six months.

You must also be able to prove that you have the financial ability to fund your journey to and from the country and have available funds to support yourself during the time you will be in the UK.

Because there are several different categories of UK Visitor Visas the rules for eligibility do vary slightly. In general, you will need to be able to provide comprehensive, detailed evidence that supports your need for a short-term visa and proves your intention to return to your home country.

Immigration rules are strict and the most common reason for rejection of a UK Visitor Visa application is the lack of sufficient supporting documentation.

Categories of the UK visitor visa

Some of the categories for UK Visitor Visa include:

Standard visitor visa

The standard visitor visa allows you to visit family and friends, tour the United Kingdom and perform other approved activities. This is the “general” visitor visa for the UK.

Student Visitor Visa

A Student Visitor Visa is different from a Student Visa in that the Student Visitor Visa is specifically designed for those students who will be visiting the UK for a period of six months or less. This is best for individuals who are planning to study short-term courses or qualifications in the UK.

Child Visitor Visa

A Child Visitor Visa can be used for individuals who plan to visit family or friends or take part in an exchange or study program if they are under the age of 18 years old.

Visitor In Transit Visa

A Visitor In Transit Visa is for when you will be stopping over in the UK for 48 hours or less on your way to another country and you plan to leave the airport during this time. You must be able to provide sufficient evidence of your reason to do so as well as your travel plans.

Business Visitor Visa

You can be eligible for a Business Visitor Visa whether you are employed or self-employed. The Business Visitor Visa is not for those doing paid work in the UK. It is for individuals who plan to visit for six months or less in order to attend business conferences or training, negotiate deals or sign contracts, or other short-term business purposes.

It is important to ensure that you meet the specific eligibility requirements for this visa and that you don’t require a Skilled Worker Visa or Entrepreneur Visa, which require a different application and have different criteria.

Medical Treatment visa

This allows those from Canada to travel to the UK to receive medical treatment in a private facility or hospital, of which the treatment is paid for by the visa applicant or privately through other means such as family and friends.

Academic Visitor visa

The Academic visitor visa allows foreign nationals to come to the UK to carry out research during a sabbatical or partake in formal exchange arrangements. You may also be able to teach or undertake temporary clinical practice if you are a senior doctor or dentist.

Required Documents for UK Visitor Visa

The documents required will vary depending on the basis of your visa. Generally, you will need to submit:

  • Two standard size passport photographs
  • Your current and valid passport with at least one blank page. It must be valid three months after your travel date
  • Proof of financial stability. You will need to provide documents and evidence that show you have the means to financially support yourself while in the UK. This can be six months of bank statements or payslips from your employer
  • Information on your accommodations in the UK. This can be the identification information and address of a person you are staying with or a family member in the UK
  • A detailed travel agenda showing your plans while in the UK. This should show the dates and locations of events that you will attend while in the UK as well as the dates of your travel to and from the country.
  • Prior passports and documentation of previous travel history over the period of 10 years prior to your application
  • Proof of ties to your home country and evidence that you plan to return
  • Employment information if applicable
  • The receipt of the visa application fee
  • Criminal history documentation if applicable
  • Academic and professional certificates if applicable
  • Certified translations of any documents that were not originally in English

Additional Documents For Professional/Academic Visitors

  • A letter from your employer in your home country confirming that you are traveling to the UK in order to complete research. The letter should confirm your dates of travel and the purpose of your trip.
  • A letter from the hosting institution or organization in the UK confirming the reason for your travel.
  • Evidence that you have paid the complete cost of your medical care or treatment in the UK
  • A letter from your doctor or healthcare professional confirming the need for your medical treatment in the UK. This letter must state the length of time needed for treatment as well as the cost and location where you will receive medical care
  • If you are applying for an extension of the visa, you will be required to obtain another letter stating the reason that the medical care must be continued in the UK as opposed to other sites

  • Travel abroad
  • Foreign travel advice

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Canada set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact Canada’s High Commission in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

Countries may restrict travel or bring in rules at short notice. Check with your travel company or airline for changes.

If you test positive for COVID-19, you may need to stay where you are until you test negative. You may also need to seek treatment there.

Visit TravelHealthPro (from the UK Health Security Agency) for general COVID-19 advice for travellers .

Travel to Canada

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for passengers entering Canada. Avoid travelling if you have symptoms of COVID-19. See the Government of Canada’s website for more information on COVID-19 and travel.

Public spaces and services

The Government of Canada recommends that all travellers wear a face mask on public transport.

You may be asked to wear a face mask indoors, such as in hospitals or on public transport. You may need proof of vaccination to visit settings such as care homes.

Local authorities in Canada can introduce restrictions or measures at short notice. Comply with the rules and advice of the local authorities. Check the COVID-19 guidance for each province and territory .

Passport validity requirements

Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay.

Visa requirements

Most people need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to travel to Canada – not both.

You do not need a visa for short visits (normally up to six months). You will need an eTA instead. Check entry requirements and find out if you need a visa or an eTA for your visit using this tool.

You may need to provide fingerprints and photos at a visa application centre to apply for permanent residence or a study or work permit. Find out if you need to give biometrics. If you do need to give biometrics, see the list of biometrics collection points .

When you arrive, you must show that you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay, even if you are staying with family or friends.

Contact Canada’s High Commission in the UK if you are unsure about visa requirements or your eligibility to enter the country, for example, if you have a criminal record or have been arrested.

Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA)

You must get an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) to enter or transit Canada by air, unless you’re exempt. Read the list of exemptions on the ETA website . If you enter Canada by land or sea, you don’t need an eTA. However, you must travel with acceptable travel documents and identification .

If you have British-Canadian dual nationality, you cannot apply for an eTA. You need a valid Canadian passport instead.

The eTA website has information about the eTA system and how to apply .

Visa and eTA scams

Some  unauthorised websites  charge for submitting visa applications. These websites are not associated with the Government of Canada.

If you think you may have been a victim of a scam, use the eTA Check Status tool to confirm if your eTA is valid. If it has been 72 hours since you applied, and you have not received a confirmation of your application, complete this enquiry form .

Transiting through Canada

You must have a valid Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) to transit Canada, unless you are exempt.

If you have questions, contact:

  • your airline
  • Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada
  • your nearest Canadian high commission, embassy or consulate

Find out more about transiting Canada .

Travelling with children

If only one parent is present, carry a letter of consent from the non-travelling parent. Immigration officers have the right to question children using simple and appropriate language to see if there are any concerns about child abduction.

For further information, check with Canada’s High Commission in the UK or the Canada Border Services Agency .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be taken into - and out - of Canada . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Banned food products will be confiscated and you could be fined. Check the Canadian Food Inspection Agency website for more information.

If you visited a farm, or had contact with wild animals before entering Canada, and intend to visit a farm during your stay, you must complete the relevant section in your Customs Declaration Card. For more information, see the Government of Canada’s website on biosecurity .
