10 Best Tours in Amsterdam

By Clodagh Kinsella

Amsterdam Photo Safari Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Knowing where to direct your steps in Amsterdam is far more complicated than just keeping an eye out for the constant onslaught of bikes: between the major museum renovations, the cutting-edge architectural innovation, and the chameleonic food scene, the city is enjoying a renaissance akin to its Golden Age glory days. While there are brilliant specialist operators running tours of the highlights—whether of food, art, or local photo opportunities—others, lingering longer in the memory, focus on the shadowy flipside to that 17th-century luminosity, from Amsterdam’s colonial past to its misprized sex industry. We've rounded up our favorites—be it an Amsterdam canal cruise, Amsterdam bike tour, Amsterdam walking tour, or one of the many highlighting the city's cultural offerings—including one standout through the Red Light District, to lead you in the right direction. No matter which one you choose, one thing remains: take to two wheels or the water if you really want to go Dutch.

Jordaan District Food Walking Tour Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Eating Amsterdam, Jordaan Food Tour Arrow

The Amsterdam spin-off of ace tour company Eating Europe—in six cities and counting—this isn’t a makeshift affair, and you’ll get well-produced local food maps as part of the package (but make sure to reserve ahead). The focus is very much on insider knowledge, with four-hour guided walking tours of the Jordaan district’s lesser-known corners, including a dozen stops for Dutch delicacies, and ample meet-and-greets with artisanal food heroes. Your companions: two historians, two professional chefs, and an architect—plus a local whose family have lived in Jordaan for generations, and an Indonesian/Dutch guide for explaining the former colony’s worthy contribution to the food scene. The vibe is fun and interactive, and the main course comes with an appealing slice of history on the side.

Black Heritage Tour Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Black Heritage Tour of Amsterdam Arrow

Black Heritage Tours founder Jennifer Tosch is on a one-woman mission to shed light on the presence, and little told past, of the African diaspora in the Netherlands (she’s now added tours in NYC and, by request, Brussels). Rigorous, interactive three-hour boat trips are the big draw, luring two to 90 people via celebrities like activist and author Angela Davis (average group size is 10-20 guests). Eye-opening is the word here. Once you’ve been alerted to the hidden past of Amsterdam’s beautiful Golden Age museums and canal houses, you’ll start seeing signs of the city’s sinful colonial legacy everywhere. A visit to the Rijksmuseum (usually included) or Royal Palace won’t be the same again. Definitely book ahead—especially outside of summer, when trips are less frequent.

Mokumboot Boat Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

MokumBoot Arrow

There are a million Amsterdam canal cruises, and a million other tourists to take them. Sidestepping that, and exercising your navigational skills for two hours (or more, if you like) is a bit of a no-brainer. With a 50-strong fleet of slick monochrome electric motor boats, and six hire stations across town, this is the king of skipper-yourself boat rentals, but with the laid back attitude of a playboy prince. Not that they aren’t organized: Mokum (an old nickname for Amsterdam) take care of pillows (or ponchos and blankets, depending), suggested sailing routes, and instructions on how the boats work. Affable dock personnel go beyond, so you’ll get a super-clear brief on how to operate the boat, but if you want to escape the traffic or visit a particular spot, they’ll happily tailor your itinerary to that. For sunny weekends, reserve at least two days ahead to get the prime early-afternoon slots.

Architour covering Ijburg and Golden Age home tours Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Architour Half Day Tours: IJburg & Golden Age Walk Arrow

As the market-leader for architectural tours in Holland, the brilliantly organized Architour can handle groups ranging from two to 240—whether town planning offices, Rotary Clubs, or architecture students. Their regular two-hour-long small group tours, for ten people max, and private tours, for up to 20 people, need advance booking. The two tours listed here are both on foot, though they also offer bike and canal tours. Directors Paul Vlok and Anneke Bokern (an architect and architecture journalist, respectively) have handpicked a dozen local architects to serve alongside them as guides. Fluent in Dutch and English (and some even German, French, and Japanese), all have personal insight into Dutch building culture, and how that stacks up against other countries, so no question is too specific.

WeBike Amsterdam City Tour Arrow

Cycling is part of the Dutch DNA, and there are over 880,000 bikes in Amsterdam alone—though three-hour tours by this excellent indie outfit generally top out at around seven cyclists. Between the rave reviews online and the intimate numbers, it’s definitely best to reserve your slot in advance. Like many Dutch kids, mainstays Thijs and Jasper grew up on the back of a bike, and know how to combine humor with brilliant historical and architectural titbits. You’re not just following the leader here, but engaging in regular chat as you cruise from one fascinating spot to the next. If you want to bring babies or small kids, they’ve got the (well-maintained, comfortable) bike for that. In fact, there’s really no limit to the crowd you’ll be riding with, but safe to say that it’s not the same set that comes to Amsterdam for the weed and red lights, and people who never learned to bike really shouldn’t start here.

Context Travel Dutch Masters of the Rijksmuseum Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Context Travel's Rijksmuseum Tour: Crash Course Arrow

This is a formidable operation established and executed by tour experts, and you’ll only need to share the joy with five other equally sophisticated tourists. The Rijksmuseum docents are all art historians, ranging from Vermeer experts to TV personalities—so you can be staring at a Rembrandt in the company of an acclaimed author on the subject. Despite all this they don’t talk down to tour members, and many manage to be funny as well as brilliant (sigh). Itineraries are docent-dependent (and group-dependent), so it’s worth doing your research if you’re set on getting that Rembrandt expert, but in any case the master’s works will be par for the course—not least his masterpiece The Night Watch , enjoying pride of place at the heart of the museum. More obscure rooms are also on the agenda, and having a guide to navigate them may leave you with a lasting love of 17th century ceramics, furniture, or model ships.

PIC's Wallen Tour Arrow

Walking tours of Amsterdam’s Red Light District aren’t hard to find, but no other operator tells the story of the notorious neighborhood from the perspective of sex workers. Run by invaluable non-profit the Prostitution Information Center (PIC), walks aim to encourage an open debate about the misunderstood industry and increase respect for sex workers (the term preferred by prostitutes). Turn up to PIC’s community center, café, and exhibition space a few minutes before the tour—or come earlier to consult the sex library over coffee and cake. Guides are either ex-sex workers, ready to open up about their own stories, or researchers on the industry who are able to answer literally any query from how much money you can make in a shift to the ancient origins of the trade. Given PIC’s mission to change hearts and minds, there’s absolutely nothing rote about the delivery here—this is a real passion project for guides, and you might find yourself shedding a tear.

Amsterdam Photo Safari Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Amsterdam Photo Safari Arrow

This is really best for those with a vested interest, as the one-on-one attention is brilliant for making swift progress, and if you opt for a longer tour (they run from three to six hours, with four a recommended minimum) you’ll really be able to get off the beaten track. Your safari group might range from total amateurs getting to grips with the basics of composition to pros with pricy DSLRs looking for the inside scoop on the best places to shoot in the city. You can bring a friend with an iPhone or other handheld camera device for around 90 percent less than the regular tour price, so it might end up feeling like a private tour (those are available too, and are strongly recommended for people with mobility issues). Night safaris, beginning a couple of hours before sunset, are absurdly picturesque, as the lights start to come on over the city’s bridges, casting fairytale reflections over the canals (even amateurs will soon be capturing boats’ light trails with tips on the best long exposure settings).

Rederij De Jordaan Private Boat Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Rederij De Jordaan Private Boat Tour Arrow

Slick, slick, slick. As VIP canal cruises go, captain Reinhard Spronk’s historic saloon boat tours (aboard 1932 teak beauty Welmoed , or 1908’s smaller Farahilde ) are really the business. He and his partner Miloe run the show, taking private groups (reservations necessary) on bespoke tours of Amsterdam’s legendary canals. Pick-up is from your waterside hotel or Cafe Van Puffelen, by their office. This is going to be the highlight of your European tour, combining an utterly beautiful vintage boat, the most sophisticated company in town, and (for a supplement) red roses, gourmet finger food, and bottomless champagne.

Brouwerij 't IJ Bar Brewery Tour Amsterdam The Netherlands

Brouwerij ‘t IJ Arrow

Compared to neighboring Belgium, the Netherlands isn’t exactly known as a beer powerhouse, but the big news is that the capital now has craft breweries to shout about. So skip the queues at the mammoth, more famous Heineken Experience, and head to signature local craft brewer ‘t IJ, which was raising the bar on specialty brews long before ‘small batch’ was a hipster rite of passage. Finding the venue, opened in 1985 in an old bathhouse, is child’s play: the biggest wooden windmill in the Netherlands is next door. Friday to Sunday afternoon tours of the Funenkade HQ are a snappy 20-minute crash course in the magic of malt, hops and yeast. With only 20 spots going, and no pre-booking, get to the bar early to grab tickets (a free beer is included with the entry fee). Don’t bother bringing your bachelor party though – after one too many messy experiences in the past, they’re now officially barred.

Trip to Amsterdam for Four Days Tour

Trip to Amsterdam for Four Days

• This was my first experience using travel agency for vacation and I couldn't be more satisfied. I highly recommend using Wise Yatra, they planned a wonderful trip that catered to all my personal needs. • First let's start with the location– Amsterdam is absolutely beautiful! My trip was only 4 days long but Wise Yatra made the most of it. They set up 3 tours within those days that gave the perfect opportunity to see a few of the key attractions within the Netherlands. One day was offered a walking tour through a popular local tour guide company. The guide was very knowledgeable of history and the downtown area, he was also very friendly. Another day offered the opportunity to see the Tulips, windmills and clogs through another local tour company. The company has coach bus accommodations to and from all attractions and meeting locations. The guide presented herself very professionally and also very knowledgeable of the history and attractions themselves. The last event offered through Wise Yatra was the canal cruise which offered an alternative perspective of the town via canal level. • Secondly, I could not ask for a better travel company to book through. Originally I booked this tour believing I would be joining a group. After realizing that was not the case, naturally I was apprehensive about moving forward with the trip. Associates at Wise Yatra reached out to me on a personal level to fine tune details… After expressing my concerns, the associates at Wise Yatra assured me they would be able to accommodate me as a solo traveler. My itinerary was made based on what I wanted, tours were upgraded from self guided to guided, my hotel was upgraded to a better location and I was able to stay in constant communication before, during and after my trip. They even made sure I made it home safe! Some upgrades came with a slight cost, some upgrades did not, however cost of upgrades were minimal and well worth it. The driver booked for airport transfer was local and very respectful. Also, all my questions about documents and information needed overseas were answered promptly and knowledgeable. All in all, Raj, Rachit, Nishchitha, and the rest of the team did a wonderful job. I look forward to using the Wise Yatra service again in the future.

What people love about netherlands tours from amsterdam.

The tour of Holland was wonderful. Our tour director was great. Our driver was great. The weather was not so good. I think the heavy mist and rain made me ill. It was impossible to find any cold medicine in our busy schedule. Fortunately I brought some headache medicine with me just in case I needed it. I did not want to miss any of the scheduled visits but I was anxious to get home to deal with the symptoms.
We enjoyed the nature and flowers and canals. The accommodation was good and the Fletcher hotels very peaceful in the country.

1 – The Keukenhof Gardens Guided Half-Day Tour

It says something about the Lilly Likes team that the first of our list wouldn’t be inside the city at all, but rather a tour that leaves from the city. The Keukenhof Gardens are disturbingly beautiful. They are a site you will not forget for as long as you live. Go along in April-July months to see the most spectacular flower beds you have ever set eyes on. This tour is an experience that you won’t forget.

There’s something magical about letting the sights, sounds, and scents, of some of Europe’s largest flower fields tingle your senses. The tour we chose of the many Amsterdam Keukenhof Garden Tours with Viator has 56 4 or 5 star reviews to date and carries their Badge of Excellence. It’s a full half day, taking approximately 5 and a half hours to complete. There are 79 acres of gorgeous gardens for you to explore. You’ll take some of the best photos you’ve ever taken, set against the backdrop of striking colours and stunning views.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Keukenhof (@visitkeukenhof)

This tour is best in spring when the tulips are in full bloom. There are hyacinth beds, daffodil beds, and more. This is a guided tour which comes with the Viator 24 hour cancellation we mentioned earlier. Transport to and from the gardens is included by way of an air-conditioned coach. If you only do one outing from Amsterdam, make this it. For more information click here

2 – The Private Amsterdam Canal Ring Tour

Coming in at high speeds with 89+ 5 star reviews, the private 1.5 hour long canal tour of Amsterdam is the most romantic way to enjoy the canal experience. Amsterdam is built partially on waterways. Over the centuries, builders have raised the city and cleared out the waterways of silt and debris. As a result, a full section of the city thrives at the sides of the canals. A tour of these will take you past any number of internationally famous attractions. You can see the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank house, the UNESCO world heritage listed canal district, and more.

The captain of your vessel will give you input as a guided tour. Reviewers say you can take as much or as little input as you like. If your desire is for an undisturbed 1.5 hours enjoying the scenic cruise, then you are free to do so. You can even customise the itinerary entirely, just plan ahead and let your captain know. It is this planning that makes this tour amazing. It’s romantic, special, it’s an excellent surprise for a loved one… it’s just the best way to see the city. For more information click here

3 – The Icebar and Cruise Tour

There’s a pub in Amsterdam that you may or may not have heard of. It’s called the Xtracold Icebar and inside it, everything is made of ice. This remarkable idea features glasses carved from the ice itself, so you get a fresh chilled drink, every single time you order. The Icebar is quite exclusive and they won’t let you in without prior arrangement. This tour lets you visit the icebar, get inside, and includes a one hour canal cruise so you can make a day of it.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Amsterdam Icebar (@amsterdamicebar)

This Viator tour allows you an hour inside the Icebar and an hour on the boat. The boat itself is a luxurious glass-topped canal boat. During your visit, you get three complimentary drinks in the bar. This mellow tour is described as super-cool, and we love how it combines sites like the Anne Frank Huis and one of Amsterdam’s finest drinking establishments. It’s the second on our list that’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. How likely are you to forget about a bar with ice-stools, ice-glasses, and ice-walls? Fore more information click here

4 – The Anne Frank & Jewish History Tour

Those visiting the city for religious reasons, to study, or to learn more about their heritage, could receive help from the Anne Frank and Jewish history tour. This private tour takes three full hours, so it’s for the serious consumer only. This private tour will lower in price the more of you there are in the group. You get a personalized experience where your tour guide talks about the Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam, Anne Frank’s life and times, the old Synagogue, and the former Jewish Theatre.

This tour includes team travel within the heart of the city. Tickets to the Hollandse Schouwburg are included in the price, that’s the old Jewish Theatre. Coffee and tea, drinks and snacks are included in the deal. You will see the synagogue, explore the streets, and all the while, a guide will explain the significance of Jewish Amsterdam and how it changed over the years. Importantly, this tour doesn’t go to the Anne Frank House itself. Tickets will have to be bought separately. For more information click here

5 – The Private Through the Eyes of Van Gogh Tour

You simply cannot come to Amsterdam and not browse the museums that hold the works of the great master himself. Amsterdam is the former home of Vincent Van Gogh, and its museums hold much of his work as it stays today. He was a penniless artist towards the end of his life, living in the very streets you have come to visit. There is nowhere on earth where you can closer experience the world as he did. The through his eyes tour makes it even more realistic.

This tour takes approximately two hours. You receive insights and local knowledge from a resolute guide. The ticket includes a line bypass, so you don’t need to wait in the lengthy ques at the door to the museum. You can learn about his life and influences through a private tour. You can choose whether you go in the morning or afternoon. For more information click here

6 – The Private Rijksmuseum Tour

This private tour of the Rijksmuseum lets you skip those lines. It is a popular activity and it does sell out fast, so book up early in advance. This tour has 54+ five star reviews and carries the Viator Badge of Excellence, so you know it is a great day out before you step foot out of your hotel.

This two hour tour lets you see the works of Van Gogh, Vermeeer, and Rembrandt. While you peruse the paintings by the masters, your private guide will explain when each piece was created and fill you in on other details of their lives and styles. You can learn about the history of Dutch art on this tour, a culturally significant movement that is still alive today. Admission fees are included and you have 24 hours to cancel if you have to. For more information click here

7 – The Amsterdam Red Light Walking Tour

This Red Lights District walking tour takes only an hour to complete – but it will be the most eye-opening hour you spend in the city. Prostitution is regulated intensely in Amsterdam, in order to keep the sex workers safe. Dutch politicians long since learned that people will do what people will do, so they might as well make money off it. This tour takes you through the De Wallen area of the city.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Di Cardoso (@dianete_cardoso)

This tour includes a local guide, who will talk you through the history and politics of the area. They will help you understand how something like this could exist. The tour involves a colourful walk through the Chinatown district of the city and takes you past some of the canals. It’s picturesque, it’s eye opening, and it’s the third site on our tours of Amsterdam list that you won’t forget in a hurry. For more information click here

8 – Madame Tussauds, Amsterdam

Madame Tussauds is one of the few places you don’t really need a tour guide to know what you are looking at. This creative wax works has had a home in the city for as long as it has existed. Madame Tussauds is exactly like the one in London, but it holds a rich mix of European celebs, as well as British and American faces. This deal pays for your admission and lets you skip the ticket queues so you can go on ahead and enjoy it.

Expect to be inside the building for about an hour and a half to see all the sights. You are free to photograph the wax idols and use their special interactive app to further enhance your experience. This is a great activity on a rainy day in Amsterdam and will give you a good laugh. For more information click here

9 – The Zaanse Schans Windmills and Cheese Tour

Yup. Windmills and cheese. What else could you want? It’s the best trip you will ever make.

Zaanse Schans is outside of the city. It is a small village on the water which has 10 windmills of varying beauty. It’s one of the most photographer areas of The Netherlands. This small tour takes you out there, lets you snap all the pics you want, and even feeds you cheese. Some of you might not make it home.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by De Zaanse Schans (@zaanseschans)

Ideal for a small group, this tour takes about three hours. You visit a clog-makers, learn about the 18 th century history of the town, and delight in the spinning cogs and sails of the weatherboard windmills. It’s amazing. For more information click here

10 – The Heineken Experience and 1 Hour Cruise

Last but by no means least – do you like beer? Heineken is Amsterdam’s very own favourite brewery and you can take a tour of it that includes a one hour canal cruise for you to sober up or keep going. Put aside a total of 1.5 hours for this unique experience. The cruise will take you down those UNESCO heritage canals, while your ticket includes entry into the experience with two free drinks included.

The tour here is given by an audio set. You receive a hassle free entrance without any queuing. You also get the choice of soft drinks if you don’t want alcohol. This is a tour made for beer lovers though, so if you’re not into breweries, you might want to try something less… beer-filled.

The Best Tours of Amsterdam to Take in 2024 and Why

Ian Sumpter Last Updated: October 26, 2023

Are you planning to visit Amsterdam but don’t know if you should take a tour or not? In this guide, we cover all the best tours of Amsterdam to take this year and why we love them so much.

Pro Tip: Planning your trip to Amsterdam? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you’re in the city. Check out our guide to Amsterdam for more planning resources, our best Amsterdam tours for a memorable trip, and the  top things to do in Amsterdam .

Should You Book One of the Best Tours of Amsterdam?

The short answer is yes. But why?

Amsterdam is a city that has a lot to offer and even more to explore! The food and drink scene is fantastic. Indonesian and Sumerian influences highlight the Netherlands’ imperial past, mingling with class local dishes like salted Herring. There are over forty-five miles of canals and three-hundred-and-twenty miles of cycle lanes. So, it’s no surprise to find that canal cruises and cycling tours feature heavily on this list.

On top of that, there is the Anne Frank Museum and two world-class art museums in the form of the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. There is much more to see and do than most people first expect. A guided tour can make sure you don’t miss any vital sites, so be sure to check out our best tours of Amsterdam below.

The Top 8 Best Tours of Amsterdam

1, amsterdam local food tour in the albert cuyp market.

Sean, Angel and Brandon enjoying herring on one of our best tours of Amsterdam.

The late Anthony Bourdain once said, ‘Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.’ It should come as no surprise that I often put food tours at the top of these lists.

I don’t think there is a better way to understand a city than a food tour. You get to learn so much. I’m not saying don’t go to the major monuments and museums; I’m saying do both.

With this tour, you’ll explore the historic Albert Cuyp Market as you join a food-obsessed local guide for an afternoon of seafood, cheese, street food snacks, and delicious local beer. From pickled herring to exciting Asian fusions, this is a deep dive into the Dutch food scene and undoubtedly one of the best tours of Amsterdam.

2. Rijksmuseum Art Connoisseur Guided Tour

A group enjoying one of the best tours of Amsterdam at the Rijksmuseum.

There are 8,000 works of art in the Rijksmuseum. If you were to spend sixty seconds in front of each, it would take 133 hours or five and a half days without sleep or rest to see the entire collection.

The point I’m trying to make is there is a lot to see. You don’t have time to see everything, so what should you see? You can pour through guidebooks and free guides like ours or let a local art expert guide you through the key pieces with insights, history, and more. I know which one I would choose.

With this tour, your expert guide leads you through the key highlights of the Rijksmuseum and learn about the Golden Age of Dutch art.

Highlights include:

  • Rembrandt’s portraits
  • Jan Steen’s family interiors
  • Vermeer’s ‘The Milkmaid’
  • Ferdinand Bol’s self-portrait
  • ‘The Night Watch’
  • 7th-century delftware
  • 17th-century dolls house

First Timer's Guide to Amsterdam First Timer's Guide to Amsterdam

Don’t be fooled—though small, Amsterdam boasts a wealth of attractions that can make planning your first visit feel a little overwhelming. But our guide for first timers helps you tick off the big-hitters while also getting off the beaten path.

No visit to Holland’s capital would be complete without winding your way along the 17th-century Amsterdam Canal Ring (Grachtengordel), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cruises typically float beneath some of the hundreds of bridges—the most famous of which is Skinny Bridge (Magere Brug)—that spans the Amstel River, and according to legend, was originally built by two sisters in the 1600s so they could meet up with each other more easily.

Born in the small town of Zundert, Vincent Van Gogh is one of Holland’s most famous exports. No other place pays homage to him better than the Van Gogh Museum, which is unsurprisingly home to the world’s largest collection of work by the legendary artist. Another world-class Amsterdam museum is the Rijksmuseum, the largest art museum in the Netherlands.

viator tours amsterdam netherlands

Few places in the world are more accommodating to bicycles than Amsterdam, where 320 miles (515 kilometers) of bike lanes allow you to easily traverse the 62 miles (100 kilometers) of canals and its 1500 bridges. Blend in with the locals by hiring a bike and following the bicycle lanes around town. The best spots for leisurely biking are the 19th-century “green lung” of Vondelpark and The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes), a collection of side streets featuring chic boutiques.

Amsterdam-Noord used to be an industrial wasteland, home only to factories and shipyards. Today, however, it's hailed as the capital’s hippest district. Start off in the trendy NDSM Wharf, home to a skatepark and several art galleries, before browsing Pekmarkt, where market stalls sell everything from organic food to vintage clothes, depending on the day. You can also catch a film at the EYE Film Institute (EYE Filmmuseum), a modernist landmark that is also home to a cinematography museum.

Amsterdam has several attractions dedicated entirely to flowers. Don’t miss Bloemenmarkt, the only floating flower market in the world, where local florists sell flowers from houseboats. You can also delve deeper into Holland’s flower obsession at the Amsterdam Tulip Museum. If you’re visiting in the spring months, don’t miss Keukenhof Gardens, where 7 million flower bulbs bloom across 79 acres (32 hectares) of lush parkland.

Nothing exemplifies Holland better than Zaanse Schans, an open-air museum in the fertile Dutch countryside outside of Amsterdam. Here, you can watch locals make traditional wooden clogs; see old-style windmills whirring in the fields; and, depending on the timing of your visit, admire brightly-colored tulips in bloom. Combine a visit to Zaanse Schans with a stop in Edam to sample freshly-made cheese. Or, join a tour of the charming fishing village of Volendam.

While Amsterdam is best known for being a joyous city to visit, it does have a harrowing history. Nowhere exemplifies this better than the Anne Frank House (Anne Frank Huis), a canalside house made famous by Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl . The former residence is now a moving museum that describes the Frank family’s experience of hiding during Nazi Germany. As one of the city’s top attractions, admission tickets often sell out, so be sure to reserve your time slot in advance.

viator tours amsterdam netherlands

While it might be best known for its beer and balls, there’s much more to Amsterdam’s food scene than bitterballen. The best way to discover it is on a food tour, during which you’ll get the inside scoop on Gouda cheese, smoked sausage, and stroopwafel (crunchy, sweet waffles), and discover why the city has such a thriving Indonesian food scene. You can even try your hand at making your own cheese during a workshop in De Hallen.

There’s a reason that Amsterdam is famous throughout Europe for its nightlife, most of which centers around the Red Light District (De Wallen). While the area is most famous for its liberal and regulated approach to sex work, it’s also a cute canalside district bursting with museums, bars, restaurants, and shops selling everything from condoms to cheese.

viator tours amsterdam netherlands

Once you’ve ticked off Amsterdam’s top sights, you’ll be rewarded for going farther afield. Though fast and reliable Dutch trains make getting to other parts of the country a breeze—and give you the chance to visit the grand Amsterdam Centraal Station—a day trip lets you hop between the highlights of the Hague, Delft, and Rotterdam, without having to worry about aligning your sightseeing with public transport timetables.

Amsterdam Travel Guide: Things to Know

When to visit.

Spring is one of the best times to visit Amsterdam, as the tulips and flowers of Keukenhof Gardens are in bloom. From the end of November to late January, Amsterdam’s magical light festival is in full swing.

Getting Around

As one of the world’s most cycle-friendly places, Amsterdam is best explored by bike. Cycle routes line the canals and provide a safe place to bike that doesn’t involve dodging traffic.

Things to Bring

Amsterdam’s weather is unpredictable, so suggest clients bring a raincoat and warm jacket even if they’re visiting in summer. During the freezing winter months, gloves, a scarf, and a hat are musts.

Local Customs

For many, the Red Light District is a place of work. Visitors to the area should exercise respect and refrain from taking photographs of the red-lit windows.

What the Locals Know

Escape Amsterdam’s crowded center by hopping on a ferry to the north of the city, a former industrial area full of hip cafes and vintage shops.

Rating: ⭐️ 4.9/5 (212 reviews)

“This was a lovely experience! Ended up having a private food tour which resulted in one of the highlights of the trip as we spent time learning more about the history and culture of Amsterdam.” Derek, Google review

If you’ve joined one too many food tours that left you with an overwhelming feeling of “meh…” then the team at Hungry Birds Street Food Tours has just the perfect outing for you. The Hungry Birds first spread their wings in 2013, and they’ve been soaring ever since.

The goal of the company is to concentrate on quality over quantity, using food to bring people together in a sustainable way. Their excursions are available in various shapes and sizes — with their flagship offering, “The Original Street Food Tour”, enthralling guests for a jaw-dropping 4.5 hours.

This is one of the best tours out there if you want to explore the colonial history of the Netherlands and its culinary legacy. Apart from the local specialties that Amsterdam is famous for, you’ll also discover Surinamese and Indonesian food, while learning how the erstwhile Dutch thirst for commerce created today’s Netherlands.

“Wonderful tour! I had the opportunity to try so many delicious things thanks to the great guide. Highly recommended” Lior, Google review

Bringing up the rear of this list of the best food tours in the Dutch Capital are the guys at Streat Bites Amsterdam . Their Hidden Gems Food Tour is a case of saving the best for last, avoiding all the tourist traps in search of those spots that only locals know about.

The tour is a combination of a culinary experience and a cultural expedition and you may look forward to connecting with the city’s vibrant heritage and traditions through its food.

This hidden gem’s food tour lives up to its name and will surprise even the most grizzled of Amsterdam’s visitors. This is mainly due to the time and energy put into the experience by Guy, Inbal and Roy as they strive to remain at the head of the Amsterdam food scene by uncovering one diamond in the rough after the other.

How to book food tours in Amsterdam?

Finding the food tour in Amsterdam that ticks all the boxes can be quite a task. Not only are there a myriad of tour companies, each with several offerings, but they present these on different booking platforms, typically at different price points.

5 Really Cool Amsterdam Tulip Tours For 2024

One of the things that draws everyone to the Netherlands is the famous tulips. In fact it is one of the things that the country is known for. I know that I was extremely captivated by them before I became a Dutch resident. Don’t get me wrong, I still love tulips but now I can plant them in my own garden.

Now before we dig into all the different Amsterdam tulip tours, I want to emphasize that the tulip fields are not in Amsterdam. They are a distance off. The most prominent and well known tulip fields are in and around the Keukenhof gardens.

Getting from Keukenhof from Amsterdam can seem daunting but it really isn’t so if you are up for the challenge of tackling the Dutch public system on your own, by all means do! It is super easy to get around using the train and other modes of transport and almost everyone speaks English so it’s easy to have a conversation should you get stuck anywhere.

Okay, that being said, if you are nervous or have a time crunch then taking one of the numerous Amsterdam tulip tours is definitely the way to go. I’m going to help you decide which of these Amsterdam tulip tours are best suited for you.

🌷 Heading to Keukenhof gardens? Make sure that you book your ticket in advance or it may get sold out! 🚌

1. keukenhof entry ticket + shuttle bus.

The eager people heading into the Keukenhof garden after they disembarked from their Amsterdam tulip tours.

⭐️ Rating: 4.6/5 (4960 Reviews) Price: $36.93 per person Duration: Valid for 1 day 📍 Meeting Point: This is Holland, Overhoeksplein 51 in Amsterdam Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

Now before I talk about all the different Amsterdam Tulip Tours, I have to mention that you can book your entry ticket online and you should. This is because there are thousands of people who head to Keukenhof every day. The place gets packed and if you don’t have your time slot booked out, you probably will not get in.

The beauty about booking the entry ticket on Getyourguide is that you can also book a shuttle bus that takes you right to the doors of Keukenhof. You don’t have to worry about transport at all.

“Hassle free transportation to the Keukenhof with multiple bus options on the return transport.” Sarah ( read more reviews now! )

Plus there are many buses that go to and fro so you can take your time at the gardens before heading to catch a bus back. I find this incredibly convenient and super handy. In fact, it is one of my preferred ways to explore the tulip fields.

2. Guided Amsterdam Tulip Tours

Yellow, purple, white and red tulip beds in the Keukenhof gardens. Something that you will see when you catch one of the Amsterdam tulip tours.

⭐️ Rating: 4.5/5 (2,350 Reviews) Price: $37.66 per person Duration: 5 hours 30 minutes 📍 Meeting Point: Tours & Tickets Amsterdam, De Ruijterkade 34, 1012 AA Amsterdam, Netherlands Details: Read more on Viator!

There are loads of Amsterdam tulip tours that head out every day during tourist season. In fact, it is one of the busiest times of the year. Now while I will be discussing all the different types of Amsterdam tulip tours available, it would be remiss of me not to talk about the standard options that are the most popular. So if this is something that you want to do, make sure to book your ticket in advance .

The tours come in two options: the guided tour and the self guided tour. The self guided tour participants are provided with a multi lingual audio guide and you can explore the Keukenhof gardens using this so you can set your own pace.

“Not only was the bus and bus driver very pleasant, but the guide on the bus was fantastic, Dash friendly, funny, and helpful! Would do this again, without a doubt!” Judith ( read more reviews now! )

The guided tour obviously have their own guide onboard. Make sure to select your language of instruction carefully before you book though because the tours are available in multiple languages. All groups meet in front of the Central Station in Amsterdam which is pretty convenient.

3. Flower Fields + Cultural Bike Tour (Small Group)

A cycle parked at the side of the yellow tulip fields. Cycling Amsterdam tulip tours are always a great idea.

⭐️ Rating: 4.8/5 (92 Reviews) Price: $50.12 per person Duration: 3 hours 📍 Meeting Point: The main entrance of Keukenhof Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

If you really want to explore the Netherlands, you really should hop on a cycle at some point or the other. Cycling around Keukenhof is super easy. The cycle paths are well demarcated and there isn’t much of an incline. In fact, I was a hesitant cycle rider (back then) and I actually enjoyed the ride.

Now when you visit Keukenhof gardens, you will find that aside from the millions of tulips in the actual gardens, there are fields and fields of tulip fields next to it. Exploring these by cycle is one of the epic activities that you can indulge in.

This particular tour takes you on a guided ride around the area and you can explore some iconic spots that many people miss when they visit.

“It was a great way to get acquainted with: the area beyond the Keukenhof Tulip Garden, some history, farming, the tulip fields, and see the VAST array of tulips… some 70 different examples. Our guide Ingrid was a delight!! Our guests truly enjoyed themselves.” Ingrid ( read more reviews now! )

You also get a chance to visit the iconic gardens too but I think it gives you a deeper understanding of the area, how the tulips grow and the history behind it.

Plus it is a fun way to spend the day rather than just visiting the gardens and heading back to Amsterdam.

4. Private Amsterdam Tulip Tours

Rows of yellow and red tulips which you can see if you take one of the Amsterdam tulip tours.

⭐️ Rating: 4.5/5 (22 Reviews) Price: $558 per group (max 7 people) Duration: 5 hours 📍 Meeting Point: Hotel/Cruise port/Airport pick-up and drop-off Details: Read more on Viator!

Now if taking the public transport is not your thing then you have two options in had. Either book a group tour or a private tour.

Group tours can really annoy people who love their own independence to explore and discover a location. If you are one of these people then think about taking one of the private Amsterdam tulip tours.

“OUTSTANDING!!! A trip to Amsterdam is not complete without a visit to Keukenhof. We had an absolutely wonderful time walking around the tulip grounds. It’s a shame it’s only open for 6 weeks. Our driver was Sam… absolutely the best!! It was our daughter’s 15th birthday and he even brought her a small gift.” Greg ( read more reviews now! )

Here you will be ferried to and fro in not just a private vehicle but your very own Mercedes-Benz V-Class, S-Class, or E-Class. Not only is it extremely comfortable but you can see the gardens at your own pace. This is also great if you are traveling with young kids and want the added comfort.

Plus you have pick up and drop options that you can set which means that you could ask for a pick up from your hotel itself which is pretty handy.

5. Combine The Tulip Fields With Another Experience

The colorful windmills in Zaanse Schans can be combined with some of the Amsterdam tulip tours.

Something that you might want to consider is to combine the Amsterdam tulip tours with another popular sight in the Netherlands. Now many of the day trips from Amsterdam can fit in with this but it is important to understand that many of these trips aren’t possible unless you have a car.

Luckily there are many Amsterdam tulip tours that offer this experience. Here are a couple that I would recommend considering.

  • Keukenhof + Giethoorn
  • Keukenhof + Delft
  • Keukenhof + Zaanse Schans Windmills

There you have it! These are some of the best Amsterdam tulip tours that I could find. Each one gives you a chance to see the tulips in a slightly different perspective. One thing that you have to understand is that the crowds to Keukenhof are always going to be a part of your visit. So head out early and be prepared for them.

Have you been to Keukenhof? What was your experience like? Would you head there again? Let us know in the comments below!
