They will assist you with your transfer to the hotel. After checking in, you are free to explore the city at your leisure. Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport, or similar

Nara – uji – kyoto.

In the morning you will travel to Nara, the oldest capital city of Japan, by private coach. We will visit Todaiji Temple, the largest wooden building in Japan. The temple also houses the largest bronze statue of Buddha at 16.3 meters high, and the surrounding park is filled with over 1,000 Sika deer. We will continue our tour to Uji where you can experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Then, visit a sake museum in the scenic and historic Fushimi district, which is home to more than twenty breweries and is considered one of the brewing capitals in Japan. At the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, you will be introduced to the facinating history of sake brewing with its nostalgic buildings, tasting experience, and valuable collection of traditional brewing tools. Then a visit to the stunning vermilion colored Fushimi Inari Shrine, whose 4km long tunnel of scarlet torii gates was featured in the film Memoirs of a Geisha. This complex wraps around a bamboo wilderness that includes mountains, streams, and ponds, the perfect backdrop for a scenic hike.

Breakfast / Lunch

Grand prince hotel kyoto, or similar, kyoto & arashiyama – full day sightseeing.

Today we will continue our tour of Kyoto, once the capital of Japan and still considered its cultural center. First is a visit to the Nijo Castle, built in the early 17th century. Ninomaru- goten, renovated in 1626, is a building renowned as a priceless example of the architectural style of that period. At the Nishijin Textile Center, you can view displays of kimonos and even watch a kimono fashion show. Visit the Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) covered with 18 carat gold leaf. This three story structure was originally built by the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1397. Next is a visit to Arashiyama to see Tenryuji Temple where you can have a glimpse of traditional Zen landscape garden design. Then proceed through a dense bamboo grove, past several small shrines, tea shops and private houses before arriving at the Togetsukyo Bridge over Hozu River. Lastly, we will tour Gion, the old Geisha Quarter, and Pontocho, whose cobblestone alleys vibrate with night life.

Breakfast / Dinner

Kyoto – miho museum – hamanako (kanzanji onsen).

This morning we will visit the famous Kiyomizu Temple, best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall, 13 meters above the hillside below. The stage affords visitors a nice view of the numerous cherry and maple trees below that erupt in a sea of color in spring and fall, as well as of the city of Kyoto in the distance. We will then continue to Miho Museum. The museum has stunning architecture that accentuates the surrounding nature while exhibiting a variety of items from different ancient civilizations. It was designed by the renowned architect, I. M. Pei, and is named after Koyama Mihoko, one of the richest women in Japan and the founder of the museum. This museum is also listed as one of the "1000 Places to See Before You Die". Next, our group will experience a Shinkansen bullet train ride, which can reach speeds of up to 300 km/hr. We will stay at the Onsen Hotel at Hamanako Kanzanji Onsen, where you can soak in the therapeutic waters of a spa bath and feast on a traditional Japanese Kaiseki banquet dinner. Please note: If Miho Museum is close, we will invite you to Kyoto National Museum or Sagawa Art Museum instead.

Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

The hamanako, or similar, hakone – mt. fuji – tokyo.

After enjoying your breakfast at the hotel, we will travel to Hakone and take a 20 minute ropeway from Togendai to Owakundani. Much of the area here is considered an active volcanic zone since its creation from the eruption of Mount Hakone some 3,000 years ago. There, you can experience hot springs and hot rivers, where sulfurous fumes still linger. Owakundani also has splendid views of Mount Fuji in good weather. From Hakone we will proceed to Mt. Fuji on our private coach. Along the way, enjoy the changing scenery, from thick vegetation to lowlands and rolling clouds. We will stop at Mt. Fuji 5th station (depending on weather) to admire the world famous peak. In the afternoon we will travel to Tokyo. Our last visit for this day is Shibuya. We will be able to see the famed Shibuya Crossing in action and cross the street with the crowd. We will then take photos with the Hachiko Statue at the crossing, which is a monument dedicated to a loyal dog that waited even after his master passed away.

Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo IKebukuro, or similar

Tokyo – full day sightseeing.

Today, you will be taken to the Asakusa Kannon Temple, an active place of worship where you can see the largest paper lantern in Japan. You will also be able to explore the Nakamise Market, which is located right after the temple's outer gates. It is a traditional-style shopping street with centuries of history. Next, you will have the chance to enjoy a sushi making experience** with a professional sushi chef. Whatever you prepare, you will get to eat! Afterwards, we will proceed to the Tsukiji Outer Market, where various restaurants and shops line the streets. Then, pay a visit to the Imperial Palace, the former site of Edo Castle and current residence of Japan's Imperial Family. In the afternoon, we will visit the the world's tallest self supporting steel tower. At 333 meters high, Tokyo Tower is 13 meters taller than its model, the Eiffel Tower. You will be able to sightsee 150 meters up at the main observatory deck and get a bird's eye view of the city. **Please note: For the Sushi Making Experience, if you are vegetarian, on gluten-free diets, have seafood allergy, or don't eat raw fish, please contact us for other options.

Pan Pacific Hanoi, or similar

Hanoi – full day sightseeing.

Discover Vietnam's bustling and beautiful capital city of Hanoi. First enjoy breakfast, and then sightseeing begins with a visit to the majestic Ho Chi Minh Complex exterior. This stone edifice consists of Ho Chi Minh's former stilt house, Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum, and the Presidential Palace. Afterward, continue to the Museum of Ethnology to learn about Vietnam’s 54 ethnic peoples. After a break for lunch, visit the Temple of Literature -- Vietnam's first university -- which was built in the 11th century by Emperor Ly Thanh Tong. Then, head to Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple (Tortoise Pagoda). From there, walk through the the Old Quarter to explore 'The 36 Streets.' This fascinating network of alleyways and shops is an exciting place to search for souvenirs, as well as explore the vibrancy of local Vietnamese life. Later this afternoon, experience Vietnam's unique theatrical art of water puppetry, where master puppeteers effortlessly glide puppets along a glassy pool of water onstage. Finish the day with a delicious dinner at one of our favorite restaurants.

HANOI – HA LONG BAY CRUISE

Today, ride approximately 100 miles (160 km) east of Hanoi to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ha Long Bay (Descending Dragon), nestled in the Gulf of Tonkin's seafoam-green waters. The gulf's waters are peppered with small islands covered in lush, emerald foliage that enhance the bay's breathtaking natural beauty. Upon arrival, board the luxurious boutique cruise ship*. You'll take an overnight cruise through the bay, which is home to over 3,000 limestone pillars covered in greenery, hidden caves, peaceful floating fishing villages, and iconic islets. Winding past the unique shaped islets, you will disembark at Sung Sot Cave to catch breathtaking panorama views across the bay. Later, join a chef’s cooking demonstration. In the evening, on board the spacious sundeck, witness this verdant landscape become even more beautiful in the golden light of sunset. After dinner, the evening is yours to relax and bask in the natural beauty that surrounds you, or to experience rustic- style squid fishing (seasonal). *Please note: AAT's local guide will not board the cruise. The courteous and hospitable crew members will assist you during the cruise. Please note: The itinerary is subject to change depending on the cruise company's specifications and/or local weather conditions.

Return to the cruise boat, sail back to the pier, disembark, and head to Hanoi Airport for your flight to Hue: a city in central Vietnam and another major cultural hub. Upon arrival in Hue, you will be transferred to your hotel for the night. Please note: Your All Asia Tours travel package covers the cost of this internal flight.

Shortly thereafter, you'll be welcomed into an authentic and ancient Vietnamese house where you will learn how local Vietnamese people live today. Here, you will have the opportunity to help the host to prepare a traditional Vietnamese lunch. Enjoy this delicious home-cooked meal in a rustic, yet cozy, family atmosphere. This monumental stone structure fuses both ancient and modern architectural styles from Europe and Asia. Next, set out for the city of Hoi An across the Hai Van Pass, known as ‘Pass of the Ocean Clouds.' Along the pass, you will see small villages that are bursting with succulent fruit orchards. After lunch, experience contemporary Vietnamese history with a tour of the Reunification Palace, previously known as the Independence Palace of South Vietnam. Continue to the War Remnants Museum, which comprehensively documents the suffering endured during the long Vietnam- American War. Afterward, you’ll ride to Ho Chi Minh's historic center to visit the Jade Emperor Pagoda. This architectural gem was constructed 1909 and honors the Jade Emperor -- a Taoist god -- and is one of the most visually spectacular sites in Ho Chi Minh City. At the pagoda, the sweet scents of incense fill the air as visitors bow their heads in their prayer. These intimate moments provide you with a glimpse into some of the deeper spiritual aspects of Saigon and the weight of the city's history. In late afternoon, pay a quick visit to the city’s colonial legacies, including the Central Post Office, City Hall, and Opera House (please note: City Hall and the Opera House may only be viewed from the outside). Also, stroll through bustling Dong Khoi Street, the main shopping thoroughfare at the heart of old colonial Saigon. Enjoy a flavorful dinner at local restaurant. Afterward, board a small rowboat and explore the diversity of the Mekong Delta's ecosystem. Cruise along the river banks and tranquil inlets lined with nipa palm trees. • Vietnam tour packages from Japan

Both Vietnam and Japan are characterised by their beautiful and ancient traditions, attracting guests from far and wide to experience their uniqueness. Perhaps it is this that makes Japan the third best-represented nation in Vietnam’s tourism industry, or perhaps it is the fact that a land of otherworldly lush beauty lies just 5.5 hours from Tokyo. With this in mind,  Vietnam  Escape Tours  is proud to present our list of Vietnam tour packages from Japan , aimed at welcoming our Japanese guests and presenting them with a landscape far different from their own.

On these tours, you will be taken to some of the most beautiful destinations in Vietnam. You will see an unfamiliar culture and will be able to learn about it from local people. You will see evidence of your own country’s history in Vietnam, especially in the town of Hoi An and the city of Saigon, which were influenced by Japanese merchants and the Japanese army respectively. Most importantly, guests on our Vietnam package tours from Japan will be able to experience the combined beauty of a destination lying right on their doorstep.

Please note that the following tours do not feature airfare from Japan to Vietnam or vice versa.

The Destinations of our Vietnam Tour Packages from Japan

Vietnam  Escape Tours  is dedicated to showing you the best of our country through a fine recipe of ancient culture and natural beauty. The destinations we go to on the following tours comprise some of Vietnam’s most famous assets as well as those off the beaten track, where you will be able to enjoy the silence that is still so available throughout Vietnam.

At first glance, Hanoi is a capital that could not look more different from Tokyo. Guests from Japan might be surprised to find how Hanoi operates, with streets full of motorbikes and activity that differs so strongly from the pristine and well-trimmed approach to life in Japan. That being said, these Vietnam package vacations from Japan will ease you into the Hanoian pace of life, offering you a look into the culture and the friendly personalities of our locals. Along with the current activity of Hanoi, we show you the long-held traditions and customs that lend so much beauty to our diverse capital city.

Hoa Lu and Tam Coc

These twin destinations, just 12km away from each other, display the beauty of the green and delightful Ninh Binh province, located just 2 hours south of Hanoi. Both places feature on a daytrip from Hanoi on our Vietnam package tours from Japan, starting with the ancient capital of Hoa Lu and finishing amongst the sea of lush rice paddies and border of mountains at Tam Coc. This is a great excursion for seeing the blend of culture, history and natural beauty that features throughout Vietnam – always an attractive site for our Japanese guests.

Japan may be able to boast some beautiful rice terraces, but the Vietnamese method of rice farming is quite different. For evidence of this, our Vietnam package tours from Japan like to show guests to the region of Mai Chau, located about 4 hours southwest of Hanoi. This is an incredible land of wild tropical scenery, where rice paddies hug the sides of mountains and colourful local hill tribes live within the valleys. Trekking and cycling are popular activities to do here, as is visiting the local tribes and staying overnight in their attractive wooden huts. A visit during the harvesting season would be a fantastic time to see all of the golden rice swaying in the breeze.

Vietnam’s number 1 tourist destination has a lot of appeal with Japanese tourists. The sea and its mountains are like nothing seen before in Japan, and many of our guests come to Vietnam with Halong Bay at the forefront of their minds. Because of this, Halong Bay features on many, if not most, of our Vietnam tour packages for Japanese tourists, as we look to show you the beauty of the bay in a unique and hidden way. Often, we do this at Lan Ha Bay, the southern part of Halong Bay with far fewer tourist ships and therefore much more time and space to enjoy the beauty.

For a beautiful home away from home, Hoi An has a huge Japanese history to offer our guests. The ancient port town had a very large Japanese population since the very beginning, operating throughout the 15th century and for many years following this. Japanese traders became rich off the sales of silk and sandalwood, and used their wealth to establish a Japanese presence in Hoi An. This can be seen today at the Japanese Covered Bridge, which separated the Japanese part of the town from the Vietnamese part, and also around its rural areas in the form of the Japanese tombs of merchants.

Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City (formerly called Saigon) is about as close to Japanese cities as Vietnam gets. The many skyscrapers and wide roads of the city resemble Japan in a few ways, but Ho Chi Minh is still very Vietnamese in the way that it runs. This is a great place for guests on one of our Vietnam tour packages from Japan to try the food and to learn of the modern history of our country, best displayed at the War Remnants Museum and the Independence Palace. French colonial architecture can be found at the Old Saigon Post Office and Notre Dame Cathedral, while beautiful and ancient temples are dotted around the Cholon district.

What are the Advantages of a Vietnam Tour Package from Japan?

On one of our tours, you will be able to reveal the nature of a country quite different to your own, but there are plenty of other reasons as to why Vietnam is such a great destination for visitors from Japan.

  • Good Lengths of Tours – Generally, Japanese tourists to Vietnam like to stay for about a week, which is enough time for them to enjoy one or two regions of our country and return to work afterwards. To this end, most of our Vietnam package holidays from Japan are up to one week in length, which provides guests with a chance to soak up a completely different culture and see incredible natural scenery without any interruption to their day-to-day lives.
  • Plenty of Places to Worship – Like Japan, many of Vietnam’s citizens are Buddhist. There are a huge amount of Buddhist buildings, including some truly spectacular marvels like the Linh Ung Pagoda, Perfume Pagoda and Bai Dinh Pagoda. Aside from their beauty and distinct differences from Japan’s Buddhist buildings, these are very quiet and holy places for Japanese guests to practice their religious beliefs.

Beautiful and Interesting Food – The Japanese obsession with rice is found in equal measure in Vietnam. This is the true food of the people, and in that respect, our countries have a lot in common. You will discover an entirely new way to prepare, cook and eat rice meals on a Vietnam tour package from Japan, all while soaking in the relaxed and communal eating culture that differs quite a lot from your home country.

What Flights go from Japan to Vietnam?

VietJet Air are the main provider of cheap and direct flights between Japan and Vietnam, though other companies such as ANA, Scoot, AirAsia and Jetstar provide longer services. For those involving a stop-off in another country, Thai Airways, HK Express or Philippine Airlines are also available.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vietnam Tour Packages from Japan

Q: what are the entry requirements for japanese citizens to vietnam.

If staying for 14 days or less, Japanese visitors do not require anything but their passport to enter Vietnam through any of its international airports. If staying for over 14 days, you will need to apply for a visa, available through one of two methods:

• Go to the Embassy – At the Vietnam embassy in Tokyo, officials will provide Vietnamese visas upon appointments for Japanese citizens wanting to visit Vietnam. At your appointment, take your passport and some money for the application fee. After finishing your application on the premises and handing over your passport, you will receive your passport with attached visa in the post.

• Use a travel agency – If you want to visit Vietnam for over 2 weeks and are using the services of  Vietnam  Escape Tours  during any of that time, feel free to contact our company for our visa services. Visas on our Vietnam tour packages from Japan aren’t free, but we make it very easy for our guests to flow through the process without a problem.

Q: I’m unsure about which currency to bring. Should it be local money or U.S dollars?

We recommend bringing USD and changing some of that to the local currency, Vietnamese dong, upon arrival. This is because it is hard to get dong outside of Vietnam, but also because it will be impossible to pay your way through your Vietnam package deal from Japan with U.S dollars. The vast majority of businesses won’t accept them, but travel agencies and hotels might.

Q: How easy is it to get around with public transportation?

The Vietnamese public transport system doesn’t quite work the same way as Japan’s. Vietnam is still a developing nation and has a long way to go until the system can support its citizens as well as tourists. For ease of getting around, motorbike and car taxis are most certainly the best option, as they present a cheap way to reach your destination within the city. For transport between cities, coaches run a fairly cheap and efficient service, though all of your transport during your time with  Vietnam  Escape Tours  will already be arranged for you.

Q: Is it possible to survive without knowing the Vietnamese language?

You can get through a surprising amount of transactions in Vietnam with hand actions alone. Vendors in the popular areas of Vietnam are used to tourists now and may even have picked up some English through serving them, however, the overall level of English (and certainly Japanese) is not great. It is worth your time to memorise a few simple words that will help you to get through basic exchanges, though our tour guide is always on hand to help out if you need it.

Q: I want to try the street food in Vietnam, should I be scared of food poisoning?

Food poisoning is no more prevalent in Vietnamese food than it is in anywhere else in Asia. The street food scene here is remarkably clean and the vast majority of visitors leave Vietnam without a problem. Exercise caution, of course, but don’t be overly wary about the dangers of food poisoning here, lest it get in the way of your discovery of delicious Vietnamese cuisine.

Q: What direct flights can I get to other countries after I have visited Vietnam?

For those who don’t feel the want to stop their holiday, Hanoi, Da Nang and Saigon airports all offer onwards flights to destinations around Asia and beyond. Whether its to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines Indonesia, China, South Korea or Taiwan, you will be able to reach there fairly simply from Vietnam.

GIRLS WHO TRAVEL (6)

A Magical Trip to Japan & Vietnam

Girls Who Travel | A Magical Trip to Japan & Vietnam

I took a trip to Japan and Vietnam with my 12 year-old daughter. The two countries could not be further apart in experiences. Both countries are great and incredibly different.

A Magical Trip to Japan & Vietnam

Girls Who Travel | A Magical Trip to Japan & Vietnam

Japan is orderly, polite and clean. For my first trip to Japan , I decided to focus on the main cities of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, but there are also many great destinations in Japan off the beaten path ! The trains are super efficient (and very reasonably priced). They take their toilets pretty seriously (the toilet control panels are like no other!).  And although Japan has a reputation for being very expensive, it is pretty easy to eat on a budget and most tourist attractions are free. If you are near Tokyo, visit Lake Kawaguchiko, one of the prettiest lakes in the world ! A week in Japan is certainly not enough time but was enough to whet my appetite for a return visit!

Budgeting Tips

One strategy for me, when traveling on a budget, is to stay away from the city center and stay “small”. Frankly in Japan, rooms are already tinier than anywhere else I have traveled, but tiny truly took on new meaning. In Tokyo, I stayed near the Skytree. Although not near downtown, the subway gets you anywhere you need to go efficiently and easily.

In Kyoto, small took on an even smaller meaning. Literally my suitcase could not fit past the front door. And when I say suitcase, I had a carry-on for my two weeks of travel and a backpack…that’s it! Again, the price was right but it was situated in a neighborhood that had easy access to the train station. In Osaka, I stayed in a very small, very old apartment (not updated at all) but it was in the heart of all the action. I was minutes from the famous food street Dotonbori. It was people-watching at its finest!

A few other budget tips: I pay for my rooms up front since it allows me to negotiate a little. That way I then do not have to worry about costs for that portion of the trip. Japan has the reputation of being a budget-breaking destination, but I spent most of my time wandering watching the people, visiting temples and gardens that were free and eating simply. I ate noodles and ramen wherever I went since I figured that Japan’s signature dishes. Those are what locals eat and therefore would be moderately priced.

On the complete opposite spectrum from a trip to Japan is Vietnam . This was my second trip to Vietnam. My first trip was ten years ago and I only visited Hanoi. This trip I visited Hanoi, Da Nang, Hue, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City. Covering so much of Vietnam meant a lot of plane rides, as the roads make for slow travel there.

Vietnam is chaotic, noisy and unorganized. Although I noticed a lot more cars this time around, the motor bikes (and their honking) are ever present. Crossing the road is an act of death-defying activity. People use their horns as a second language. But at the same time, their is a warmness to the country that makes the visit worthwhile.

Girls Who Travel | A Magical Trip to Japan & Vietnam

Hanoi’s Old Quarter is vastly different from Ho Chi Minh City’s wide boulevards and colonial architecture. I liked Ho Chi Minh City right away (if only because it was so different from Hanoi). Since this was my second visit to Hanoi, I was able to stroll the crazy streets a bit more leisurely, because the must-see tourist attractions were already checked off. But based on my first trip, Halong Bay is a must-see. Find a guide and choose your boat carefully, though, if you are going to do an overnight trip. I highly recommend doing that. The stunning scenery coupled with the unique experience of staying on a junk boat is not to be missed!

From Hanoi, I flew to Danang and then took a taxi to Hoi An. It took about 30 minutes and cost $17 US. Hoi An was a little slower and amazingly well preserved, given how old the town is. Vietnam’s craftsmanship is evident in both Hanoi and Hoi An. There is beautiful clothing, leather and wood items. Life happens on the streets and a “restaurant” can be set up on pretty much any sidewalk. It is amazing how anything and everything can be done on a motorbike, including a mid-day nap!

In Hoi An, I stayed in a family home. It is quite common to do and incredibly cheap. I stayed in a room in a private area of the house with a spotless bathroom and air conditioning for $25 US, which included breakfast. And I was able to see intimate details of daily life, which was priceless.

The best decision I made was to hire a driver to see the Hai Van pass to Hue. Again,  I got a more intimate glimpse of daily life and my driver stopped in many places I would not have been able to see via a bus or at all. It was $80 US well-spent! The views were incredible. We stopped at several beaches and I had a once-in-a-lifetime meal in Hue before visiting the Imperial City and the Thien Mu Pagoda.

Ho Chi Minh City is a bustling city with a mix of old and new. There was construction everywhere and as every where else  in Vietnam, the streets have no rhyme or reason and getting lost is easy. I say go with it and use your phone maps for help. Ho Chi Minh City (and Vietnam) is an assault on all senses and it is wonderful and overwhelming all at the same time.

I felt like Vietnam is at a crossroad. There is evidence of lots of development and the presence of more cars means wealth is being built (at least for some). But there is still a lot of poverty and the need for infrastructure. I do hope that Vietnam moving into modern times will not ruin the beauty of the country. Fun fact: Tokyo, Japan, is one of the best places to celebrate Oktoberfest outside of Germany ! Taking a trip to Japan and Vietnam is an amazing experience – don’t miss it!  Are you looking for other fascinating destinations in Asia? "Japan is one of the most captivating places on earth, where you can go from Tokyo's flashy streets to the snowy peak of Mount Fuji or a traditional ryokan in a day."

Travel Director

Admire the snow-capped Mount Fuji

See the towering peak of Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan and a UNESCO-listed site. We’ll take you up to the 5th station of Mount Fuji, a spectacular vantage point at 7,545 feet, before taking a ride on the Kachikachiyama Ropeway with views of Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi.

Take a high-speed bullet train to Kyoto

Board the high-speed bullet train to Kyoto, the former capital of Japan and the ancient epicentre of Japanese culture. After whizzing through the country, you’ll meet the locals at a traditional ryokan and learn about traditional Japanese customs, then explore the Gion District and glittering Kinkakuji Temple, the symbol of Kyoto.

Experience a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony

We’ll introduce you to a professional Tea Master who has spent many years learning the craft of the tea ceremony. You’ll learn about the history of Japanese tea making, and watch how the matcha is prepared with a bamboo whisk. You’ll even have a go at making (and tasting) your own tea.

Admire Osaka from the Floating Garden Observatory

The Floating Garden Observatory is an open-air viewing platform, stretching between the two towers of the Umeda Sky Building. We’ll take you to the top of the 567-foot buildings for panoramic views over Osaka, including the city’s dazzling rivers, bridges and soaring skyscrapers.

Wander through Ameyoko Street Market

With nearly 200 shops selling everything from fresh fish and spices to clothing and bags, you can spend hours roaming through Ameyoko Street Market. Located in Tokyo along the Yamanote Line tracks, it was once a black market selling American goods and sweets after WWII, when sugar was hard to find.

Our top 5 things to do in Japan

Our Japan tours take you from the dizzying heights of Mount Fuji and the bustle of the Ameyoko Market, to the tranquility of a Japanese tea ceremony.

Tokyo National Museum

The largest and oldest museum in Japan, Tokyo National Museum holds one of the world’s best collections of art and archaeological artefacts from Asia. There are over 110,000 items, including 87 National Treasures of Japan, and you can find everything from art along the Silk Road to medieval Japanese art.

Kotokuin Temple

Located in the city of Kamakuru, the Kotokuin Temple is a Japanese Buddhist temple of the Jodo sect. It’s home to the ‘Great Buddha’ or ‘Daibutsu’, a 37-foot bronze statue of Amida Buddha, constructed in 1252. The towering statue is a National Treasure and one of the most iconic sights in Japan.

Sensoji Buddhist Temple

One of the most famous temples in Japan, the Sensoji Buddhist Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo. It was originally built in 628 but was rebuilt after being destroyed in WWII. Today, you’ll find a beautiful five-storey pagoda, woven with incense and crimson eaves.

Best museums in Japan

A Japan tour package with Trafalgar takes you through the country’s top museums, from one of the world’s best collections of Asian art, to the ornate temples of Tokyo.

Although sushi is now a popular dish around the world, you’ve never really tried it until you’ve eaten the best in Japan. Our Local Specialists will help you navigate the endless varieties of this iconic dish, from raw vegetables to fresh fish wrapped in rice and seaweed.

Hida beef comes from a Japanese breed of black-haired cattle raised in the fresh air and pure water of Gifu Prefecture. Hailed as the best beef in Japan, we’ll take you to the top restaurants to try one of the beautifully tender and marbled Hida beef steaks.

A beloved dish found all over the country, ramen is a delicious Japanese noodle soup. Each region has a different variation and it usually involves a tasty pork or chicken broth, seasoned with plenty of rich flavors like miso, soy sauce and spring onions.

Best food in Japan

A Japan group tour with Trafalgar will have you indulging in the country’s fantastic cuisine, from fresh sushi to piping hot ramen.

What to pack for Japan

People packing for a tour

Adaptor plug

In Japan, the standard voltage is 100 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type A and B. The standard frequency is 50 / 60 Hz.

Comfortable sandals

Japanese culture requires you to take off your shoes when entering traditional restaurants, temples and ryokans. Bring a comfortable pair of sandals so you can easily slip them off all day.

Japanese phrasebook

Learning a few Japanese phrases will help you connect with the friendly Japanese locals, and offers the chance for some rewarding interactions.

Most shops and restaurants in Japan primarily accept cash, so it’s best to come prepared with some Japanese yen for your trip.

Versatile clothing

Japan’s weather ranges hot and humid to freezing cold, with mild springs in between. Pack versatile layers to be prepared for all conditions on your Japan holiday.

Japan officially welcomes back Vietnamese tourists

Japan has opened its doors to international tourists from June 10. However, this country only accepts visitors from countries classified as “green” and tourists must book tours through tour operators with accompanying tour guides. During that time, Vietnam was still classified as “yellow” and only Vietnamese students, trainees and businessmen could enter Japan.

JNTO Vietnam office has carried out a campaign with the message “It's time for Japan ‘Okaeri’ with many promotional activities to attract potential Vietnamese customers to the land of the rising sun.

Chief representative of JNTO Vietnam, Kenji Yoshida, affirmed that Vietnam has always been a key market for the Japanese tourism industry and Vietnamese tourists have a great demand for Japanese tourism. In addition, the number of Vietnamese entering Japan after the pandemic is also high.

Previously, the head of JNTO Vietnam also shared his wish that Vietnamese tourists can return to Japan during the red leaf season from September to November, which is a favourite time of the year.

Japan has also eased entry regulations for tourists from many other countries. The country is expected to welcome about 50,000 tourists each day from September 7.

Useful information for planning your holiday in Japan

General Information Capital City : Tokyo People : Japanese Language : Japanese Currency : Japanese Yen Time Zone : UTC +9 Hrs International Dialing Code : +81 Passport and visa If you are a citizen of one of the over 50 countries with which Japan has a “general visa exemption arrangement”, you need only a valid passport to enter Japan as a “temporary visitor”. The list of countries eligible for visa exemption are listed here. Otherwise, you need to obtain a visa before entering the country. Temporary visitors from most countries are allowed to stay for up to 90 days. All foreign tourists in Japan are required to carry their passports at all times. USA citizens: https://jp.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/ UK citizens: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/japan/entry-requirements AUS citizens: http://australia.or.jp/en/visa/ Currency The Japanese currency is the Yen. Notes come in 1,000 yen, 2,000 yen (very rare), 5,000 yen and 10,000 yen denominations. Coins come in 1 yen, 5 yen, 10 yen, 50 yen, 100 yen and 500 yen denominations. Cash is still the preferred payment method, especially when it involves small amounts. However, there is an increased acceptance of credit and debit cards, especially in big cities. Most hotels accept payment by credit cards nowadays, as do most department stores, mid to high-end restaurants, outlet malls and large retail shops. Phones & Internet service There are various ways to stay connected to the internet while travelling in Japan. A majority of hotels in Japan offer free internet in their guest rooms. Both paid and free wireless (Wi-Fi) hotspots are available in Japan. Laptops and mobile devices can connect to publicly accessible hotspots found around airports, train stations, hotels, restaurants, coffee shops and bars. Those who wish to use their own mobile phones or tablets to directly access the internet in Japan can get rental or prepaid SIM cards that allow for unlimited internet access via the cellular phone network.

Weather The Japanese are proud of their four seasons (and an astonishing number of them are firmly convinced that the phenomenon is unique to Japan), but travellers with a flexible schedule should aim for spring or autumn. Spring is one of the best times of year to be in Japan. The temperatures are warm but not hot, there’s not too much rain, and March-April brings the justly famous cherry blossoms (sakura) and is a time of revelry and festivals for Japanese people. Summer starts with a dreary rainy season in June and turns into a steambath in July-August, with extreme humidity and the temperatures as high as 35C. Autumn, starting in September, is also an excellent time to be in Japan. Temperatures and humidity become more tolerable, fair days are common and fall colors can be just as impressive as cherry blossoms. However, in early autumn typhoons often hit the southern parts of Japan and bring everything to a standstill. Winter is a good time to go skiing or hot-spring hopping, but as some buildings lack central heating, it’s often cold indoors. There is usually heavy snow in Hokkaido and northeast Japan due to the cold wind blasts from Siberia. Public Holidays The following is a list of all Public Holidays in Japan. For these dates most businesses will be closed and conditions of travel may be affected.     New Year’s Day : Jan 1     Coming of Age Day : 2nd Monday of Jan     Foundation Day : Feb 11     Vernal Equinox Day : Mar 20 or 21     Showa Day : April 29     Constitution Memorial Day : May 3     Greenery Day : May 4     Children’s Day : May 5     Marine Day : 3rd Monday of July     Mountain Day : August 11     Respect for the Aged Day : 3rd Monday of Sep     Autumnal Equinox Day : Sep 22 or 23     Health and Sports Day : 2nd Monday of Oct     Culture Day : Nov 3     Labour Thanksgiving Day : Nov 23     The Emperor’s Birthday : Dec 23

Tokyo Japan’s bustling capital is a perfect combination of ultra modern and traditional Japanese culture. Tokyo has everything to offer: from high-tech skyscrapers, hidden shrines, and a vibrant food scene, to the weird and wonderful fashion world of Shibuya and Harajuku. Tokyo is the typical gateway into Japan and is home to the Buffalo Tours Office. It also has easy access to Hakone, Kamakura and Nikko for day trips.   Kyoto All the most iconic sites of Japan are in Kyoto and should have pride of place on all itineraries. With over 3,000 temples and shrines, and beautifully preserved entertainment districts, it is a fantastic introduction to Japan’s traditional Geisha and Samurai culture. Many people come to Kyoto and dress in traditional kimono/yukata, and it is the best place to take part in a Tea Ceremony. Kyoto is well placed to visit Osaka, Kanazawa and Takayama. Takayama Takayama is an old town in the Japanese Alps with a very distinct culture and dramatic scenery. The distinct architecture of Shirakawago town is an easy day trip from Takayama and is beautiful in any season, including winter. The best way to get there is from Tokyo then onwards to Kyoto or Kanazawa.   Kanazawa Nicknamed ‘Little Kyoto’, Kanazawa offers the same rich cultural heritage but on a smaller scale. It is one of the best places to learn about traditional Geisha, Samurai and Zen cultures, with many original districts still thriving. A new Shinkansen rail line has opened recently, linking Kanazawa directly with Tokyo. Osaka Delve into the past with some of Japan’s best museums and race into the future on the loud, bright and modern streets of Osaka. This unassuming city has a lot to offer including, Shogun era castles, Universal Studios and some of the best food in Japan. It is only 30 minutes to Kyoto by train and also the gateway to Koyasan.   Hiroshima The city of Hiroshima is, sadly, most famous for the moment it became the first city targeted with an atomic bomb. Today you can pay your respects and learn more at the fantastic Peace memorial Park and Museum. Hiroshima is also the gateway to the idyllic Miyajima island and its floating Tori Gate. These destinations make a perfect overnight trip from Osaka.

Discover ancient Japan From Kyoto’s well-preserved entertainment districts, to the Samurai neighbourhood of Kanazawa and walking with a Sumo Wrestler in Tokyo, understanding the Japan of old is a vital part of travel in the region. As well as the unique subcultures of the Geisha, Sumo and Samurai, learn about the Edo period and zen and Buddhist philosophies too.   Watch a Sumo practice Delve into the Sumo world with a visit to a Sumo Stable to observe their daily practice. Learn about how the Stable acts as a training ground and shared living space for communities of wrestlers and observe their serous practice up close and personal. This intimate experience with Japan’s national sport is an unforgettable experience.   Live the Geisha Experience Explore the Gion Geisha district of Kyoto in the most local way you can, in a traditional kimono! Be fitted and styled before embarking on your walk around the Gion District, learning about how the Geisha live. The pictures you take on this tour will be unforgettable. Buffalo Tours offer this experience in Kyoto , as well as Tokyo. Take part in a tea ceremony From Yasaka Shrine next to Gion make your way through the preserved Higashiyama Temple District. Take part in a Japanese tea ceremony in a traditional home before visiting a neighboring Zen temple garden with original tea houses.
