Berlin visitors have a choice of several city passes to help them navigate the city by public transport and offer discounts for museums, sightseeing tours, attractions, bars, restaurants, and clubs.

Finding the right pass can be confusing, but we’ll do our best to provide you with highlights and insider tips to help you find the best choice for your trip.

The first step to finding your pass is to figure out as best you can what you want to do while visiting Berlin. It's best not to let any single tourist discount pass or card dictate to you what you will see.

Secondly, you should decide whether you will use a public transport ticket .

There are many different tourist passes to choose from in Berlin, but none offer exactly the same benefits as another.

Berlin Discount Passes

A discount pass , such as the Berlin Welcome Card, provides free travel on the Berlin public transportation system along with deals on various tours and attractions (think al-a-carte).

Your savings are more limited with these cards, but they are less expensive and you have more flexibility than an all-inclusive pass.

All Inclusive Berlin Tourist Pass

An all-inclusive pass , such as the Berlin Welcome Card All Inclusive, will allow you free entry to visit certain attractions (think all-inclusive resort).

These passes are limited by the # of days that you choose and one of the options o

So, you can visit as many attractions and tours as you can fit in that timespan.

These are the most expensive options, but you have the potential to save the most money with them.

There are two all-inclusive passes to choose from and we compare them below .

Berlin Museum Pass

Meanwhile, the Museum Pass will give you free admission to more than 30 different museums in and around the city, but it does not include transportation or any other discounted attractions.

If all else fails, you can also save money on various activities in Berlin by taking advantage of combo deals offered by bus tour companies.

DISCOUNT PASSES

If you don’t feel like spending a lot of money on an all-inclusive pass, or maybe you are not sure that you would use the all-inclusive card enough to make it worth buying, then you might want to consider one of the following discount passes.

These services typically include free public transport along with discounts on several popular attractions.

This is a great option for travelers who want to take control of the places that they visit and save money on transportation.

If you are considering this opportunity, make sure to read about how the AB/ABC Zone tickets work in Berlin.

Berlin Welcome Card

This Berlin Welcome Card offers a discount pass that can help you save a lot of money on admission to several popular attractions.

It also offers an option to include all 5 museums of Museum Island.

With 25% to 50% off at over 200 venues and a public transport pass included, the Berlin Welcome Card is made for travelers who don’t want to miss out on anything.

This pass provides discounts for 48 different museums, 26 attractions, and at least 44 interesting tours in Berlin.

The Welcome Card offers various options in terms of duration and tariff zone.

Travelers can choose either Berlin city centre (tariff zone AB) or Berlin and surrounding areas (tariff zone ABC).

Berlin Welcome Card Benefits

You could also print the voucher at home and obtain the transport tickets and discount pass at any of a number of tourist offices, including BER Airport and most major train stations.

It also comes with a handy guide to the city and the pass's benefits that can fit in your pocket.

This card is well-reviewed. Read some of the reviews .

While the discounts they offer aren't necessarily as good as their competitors, it's easy to see how you could easily save quite a bit of money using this pass.

Berlin Travel Pass

Each of these discount passes includes a ticket for public transportation throughout Berlin.

The lower-priced options include an AB Zone ticket while the higher-priced passes have an ABC Zone ticket.

No matter which transit pass you choose to purchase, it is important to understand some basic details about these public transport tickets.

Be sure to read our guide on how to use Berlin's mass transportation system .

Useful for Several Services

The transport ticket is valid on all subways (U-Bahn and S-Bahn), suburban trains (RE and RB), buses, night buses, trams, and also for two ferries.

With this card in hand, you shouldn’t have much trouble getting around the city of Berlin.

AB or ABC Tariff Zones

It’s important to understand the difference between the AB and ABC Fare Zones.

While the AB Zone pass will provide transportation within the inner city, the ABC Zone is useful for traveling around the suburbs of Berlin as well.

This might come in handy if you intend to visit any locations on the outskirts of Berlin, such as Potsdam or Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp , or if you plan to use the BER Airport.

However, a single-ride addon ticket for Zone C costs only €1.80 per ride.

Berlin Walking Tours

Kids Ride for Free

With each of these discount passes, an unlimited number of children up to the age of 6 can travel for free.

They also allow up to 3 kids between the ages of 6-14 for free with each pass.

Luggage Is Also Free

Visitors are welcome to bring one piece of luggage or one bag per person on public transport.

Certain Items Might Cost Extra

If you have a bicycle or similarly sized item, you may be asked to pay extra as these types of items are not included with the pass.

That being said, both the Berlin Welcome Card and the Easy City Pass will allow you to bring a dog on board.

Transport Ticket Must Be Validated

Before you can use your AB/ABC Zone ticket, it must be validated by stamping it once.

You will find machines to validate your ticket near most metro stations and other areas where you can find public transport.

You only need to stamp your ticket once – if you stamp it again, it will be void.

ALL-INCLUSIVE PASSES

All-inclusive passes are the most expensive option, but they also offer the widest range of activities and the most potential for savings.

If you have the time and the desire to experience a bunch of different museums, tours, and other attractions, this is likely going to be one of your best options.

Rather than worrying about which sites you can visit, these all-inclusive passes will allow you to explore dozens of notable locations at your leisure.

Berlin Pass or Berlin Welcome Card

There are two All-Inclusive passes offered in Berlin: The Go City Berlin Pass and the Welcome Card All-Inclusive .

Although both services provide access to a lot of entertaining activities, you will notice a few differences between each tourist pass.

Specifically, there are some attractions that are offered on one pass, but not the other.

Bearing that in mind, we’ll do our best to highlight in red tours and attractions that are exclusive to either card.

The Welcome Card All-Inclusive

Although this card doesn’t provide as much variety, the Welcome Card All-Inclusive does provide admission to some museums and historic sites that aren’t offered by the Berlin Pass (see below).

You can also get this pass from 2 up to 6 days as opposed to the 3-day option above.

Overall, this pass is less expensive, so depending on what you want to see, this card might make more sense for you.

What they lack in variety, they make up for in overall value.

Free admission to 19 museums including:

  • German Spy Museum*
  • Jewish Museum of Berlin
  • The Story of Berlin Museum*

This is another prepackaged pass which includes a few of the more popular attractions and activities you can enjoy in Berlin.

One of the nicest things about this service is that you can actually schedule each individual ticket for different dates, giving you plenty of time to enjoy each location.

  • Discover Berlin Walking Tour

Unlike other prepackaged passes, this one does not include an additional 10% off other activities.

Purchase the Berlin Discover Pass or learn more .

Things to Consider

As you can see, this pass includes two of the main observation decks in Berlin. While the view from each deck is obviously different, most travelers aren't going to be interested in the same activity twice.

There's also a walking tour included, and we offer several free Berlin walking tours that are an excellent alternative.

Historical Pass Berlin

If you're interested in experiencing the history of Berlin, this pass includes several attractions you might want to visit.

Like other passes from Tiqets, you can pick different dates and times for each ticket, allowing you to take your time and explore the city at your own leisure.

Of course, if you're already planning to visit these locations, this could be an easy way to purchase admission ahead of time and save between 5% - 10% on your tickets!

  • TimeRide Berlin
  • Asisi Panorama - Die Mauer (The Wall)

Unfortunately, this pass does not include 10% off additional activities.

  • €63/Adults (17+)
  • €59/Students (17-26)
  • €57/Youth (15-16)
  • €32/Children (6-14)
  • €17/Children (4-5)

Purchase the Historical Pass Berlin or learn more .

This pass includes a nice variety of activities, including TimeRide, which isn't provided by many other services on our list.

That said, while the Cold War Museum and The Wall exhibit are both related to the history of Berlin, those are really the only two historical attractions on the pass.

Perhaps it needs a different name, but it's definitely worth considering if you want to save money at any of these locations.

Alexanderplatz Pass

If you're planning to visit Alexanderplatz, this pass will cover the cost of a few popular activities in the area.

Each ticket included can be scheduled for specific dates and times, allowing you to plan out your trip ahead of time while you save a bit of money.

Considering most tourists will visit this major plaza in the city centre, chances are this discount pass will come in handy for some travelers.

  • BODY WORLDS Berlin
  • City Sightseeing Hop-on Hop-off Tour

This pass does not include an extra 10% off other activities.

  • €62/Adults (18+)
  • €61/Senior (65+)
  • €59/Youth (15-17)
  • €40/Children (4-14)

Purchase the Alexanderplatz Pass or learn more .

The City Sightseeing Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour makes a stop at Alexanderplatz, so you can actually use that service from this plaza.

While they could certainly add more to this pass, it's a pretty good way to secure tickets for some of the more popular sites in the area.

The Berlin Wall Pass

For many travelers, the Berlin Wall is an absolute must-see attraction, and this is a great way to experience the historic site and learn all about the story of the structure.

In addition to multiple tours of the wall, you'll also have access to a few of the more popular sites related to this historic site.

  • East Side Gallery Audio Tour
  • Explore Berlin Walking Tour

Unfortunately, this pass does not offer an additional 10% off other activities.

  • €41/Adults (17+)

Tips From Locals and Travelers

While we do our best to provide the most unbiased reviews of discount passes, the best way to make sure you're getting the truth is to check and see what actual locals and travelers have to say about these services.

One of the best places to find this kind of information is on Facebook groups such as Berlin Travel Tips .

A lot of people who have either lived in the area or travel there frequently will share their own thoughts on various tourist pass options.

Here are a few of the best tips we could find.

When it comes to the Welcome Card, it seems that most people are split on whether or not it's worth the money.

One thing most travelers agree on is that it's good if you plan to visit a lot of the included attractions, but if you're not interested in a majority of included activities, it might not be worth it.

Some commenters suggest buying a travel pass instead, because it's definitely a good way to get around the city with ease.

visit berlin discount code

That said, some travelers feel that the Berlin Welcome Card isn't worth the cost, and they note that you can often save more money through other methods.

This is certainly true, because most museums offer discounted rates to students and young adults, so you might actually save more just by getting a different kind of ticket!

visit berlin discount code

As John notes about the Museum Pass, most museums will give you the student discount if you have a student ID from other parts of the world.

This is a valuable tip, because most museums around the world only offer student discounts to local students, but that doesn't seem to be the case in Berlin.

Even so, as Anieze suggests, you should probably check with each museum before heading out.

Save with the Cheap Museum Pass Berlin on Sightseeing Tickets

Published on March 30, 2024

by Henk Bekker

in Berlin , Germany , N24

Use the €32 Berlin Museum Pass for free admission tickets to over 30 museums, galleries, and exhibitions.

The Berlin Museum Pass is a fantastic savings deal giving access to over 30 exhibitions and galleries for three days for only €32.

Berlin Neues Museum Tickets

Culture and art lovers visiting Berlin may save big with the cheap Museum Pass Berlin. This savings pass gives free admission to over 30 of Berlin’s top museums, galleries, and exhibitions on three consecutive days for only €32. Almost all of Berlin’s top museums, including the Pergamon and all Museum Island permanent exhibitions, are included in this savings ticket, but free time-slot reservations may be required at some top museums.

Save with the Museum Pass Berlin

Museum Pass Berlin 3 Day Tciekt

Berlin has a variety of travel cards and savings passes that make sightseeing and transportation for tourists cheaper but none save more on visits to museums, galleries, and exhibitions than the Museum Pass Berlin.

The Museum Pass Berlin gives admission to over 30 of Berlin’s museums and galleries on three consecutive days for €32. A reduced-price version is also available at €16 mostly for pupils, students, and the unemployed (suitable identification required) but note that under 18s enter many museums for free anyway.

The Berlin Museum Pass can be fantastic value for money and often pays for itself after four museum visits. The more expensive museums in Berlin charge around €12-€14 (Pergamon DasPanorama, Neues Museum, Neue Nationalgalerie, Hamburger Bahnhof), or €24 for a Museum Island day ticket, but even two visits per day to smaller museums should save the bearer of the Museum Pass handsomely.

GetYourGuide

Buying and Saving with the Berlin Museum Pass

The Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin was inspired by Greek temples

The Museum Pass Berlin is available from the ticket windows of most museums where the card is valid, from many hotels, and from the Visit Berlin tourist information offices.

Time-slot reservations are currently rarely required for museums in Berlin but it is a good idea to book a time slot if possible, especially over weekends and holiday periods. Time-slot reservations may usually be made online for free at any museum website — it is often even possible before buying a ticket or pass.

Although the Museum Pass Berlin is often advertised as “no queues at the museum”, it is NOT a real skip-the-line ticket. At some museums, it is still necessary to pick up a free ticket at the ticket desk. However, if the ticket queues are long, check directly at the entrance. All the Berlin State Museums now accept the pass at the entrance door without needing a museum-specific ticket, except at major exhibitions when a time-slot reservation is additionally required. (Add €6 to book an essential timeslot to see the Caspar Friedrich David exhibition in the Alte Nationalgalerie from April to August 2024.)

For some large museums, including the Alte Nationalgalerie , Pergamonmuseum (closed until 2027), Neues Museum , and Neue Nationalgalrie , it is possible to skip the line by making free online timeslot reservations – see Tickets for the Berlin State Museums for details. (No matter how the ticket was bought, make free reservations for museums where possible.)

Tips on Saving with the Museum Pass Berlin

Berlin German Museum of Technology

The Museum Pass Berlin is a great choice when going to several museums, especially if only interested in a smaller part of a museum or even popping in just to see a single item or artwork. Many of Berlin’s larger museums such as the Deutsches Technikmuseum , Neues Museum , Gemäldegalerie , Pergamon , and German History Museum have more to see than anybody could manage in a single day.

Children under 18 have free admission to most (but not all) of Berlin’s museums.

The pass is valid for three calendar days, not 72 hours, so start using it early on the first morning. (The over-ambitious may time the last visit to a museum that is open at night.)

The pass is not transferable – names and the date of first use must be entered on the card in ink.

Exploding postal coach

Most museums are closed one day per week but enough museums are open even on Mondays (e.g. in the Humboldt Forum) to fill a busy day of sightseeing. (Many top museums are also closed on Tuesdays from mid-April 2024 .)

Museums are usually open on holidays but are very likely to be closed on December 24 and 31.

Normally, the Museum Pass Berlin gives admission to the complete museum but occasionally there may be an additional charge for special temporary exhibitions, and very rarely that surcharge may be compulsory even if interested only in seeing the permanent collection.

A few museums are free for a few hours per week, e.g. Cinematic on Thursday evenings and Communication on Tuesday evenings. Many museums are open for free on the first Sunday of the month (and mostly require online reservations).

Many sights in Berlin are free and thus best seen on day four or five: e.g. Museum in the Kulturbrauerei , Tränenpalast , Berlin Wall Memorial in Bernauer Straße, and Topography of Terror documentation centers. Admission to the Reichstag is free but advance reservations are essential, or book a tour .

Top Museums are Covered

Napoleons Hat in the German History Museum

Most of Berlin’s top museums, including all the national state museums , are covered by the Museum Pass Berlin but many of the new, high-tech experience museums that popped up in especially the Berlin-Mitte area of Berlin in recent years are not included.

The fun-to-visit DDR Museum is not covered, nor is the somewhat pricy, but long opening hours and interesting, Wall Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie .

Save with a Berlin Welcome Card

Another savings pass aimed at visitors to Berlin is the Berlin Welcome Card . This savings pass is predominantly a transportation travel card but also gives savings on some sights. The Berlin Welcome Card Museumsinsel includes admission to all the SMB museums on Museums Island while the pricier Berlin Welcome Card All-Inclusive covers many museums and further Berlin sights.

For active museum visits, a Museum Pass Berlin may be worth buying in addition to the Welcome travel card to get free entry rather than just small discounts, although the Museum Pass plus a standard transportation day or week tickets are good combinations too.

More on the Berlin State Museums (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin):

Note new opening times for many Berlin museums from mid-April 2024. Timeslot reservations are essential only for the Caspar David Friedrich exhibition (until 4 August 2024) but sensible (and sometimes needed in busy periods!) for the Alte Nationalgalerie , Gemäldegalerie , Neue Nationalgalerie , Neues Museum , and Pergamon – Das Panorama . (The Pergamon Museum itself is closed until 2027!). Timeslots are released only a few weeks in advance. Online tickets are available from GetYourGuide , which seems to have timeslots available when SMB has already sold out. Many passes and multi-museum tickets are again sold ( Kulturforum / Museums Island ). Individual museum ticket prices range from €8 to €14 (€20 for special exhibitions). Online tickets are skip-the-line — go directly to the gallery entrance to scan the code but pick up free audioguides first.

The Berlin Welcome Card includes a travel ticket for the public transport service (such as bus & rail) and the Berlin Welcome Card guide . The Berlin Welcome Card is available as an online ticket and a printed ticket by mail or as a voucher . When purchasing the Welcome Card, each visitor will also receive the practical Berlin Welcome Card guide. One guide is sufficient per group (maximum 4 people), another guide is needed for each additional person.

Upon presentation of the ticket and the guide, visitors will receive the respective discounts & rebates. When purchasing the Berlin Welcome Card including Museum Island, the visitor gets once-daily free access to the museums on Berlin’s Museum Island (special exhibitions are excluded) during the period of validity.

The printed tickets are valid for the purchased ticket period (48h, 72h or 4, 5, 6 days). Online tickets do not have to be separately validated before being used for the first time . Their period of validity depends on the specified travel date and the time on the online ticket. As regards tickets for 4, 5 or 6 days, the Berlin Welcome Card expires on the last day of validity at 12am.

The Berlin Welcome Card is available as a public transportation ticket with discounts on numerous partners:

  • Berlin (fare zone Berlin AB, valid for one adult and up to 3 children between the ages of 6 and up to and including 14 years old)
  • Berlin+Potsdam (fare zone Berlin ABC, valid for one adult and up to 3 children between the ages of 6 and up to and including 14 years old)

On-site At Berlin tourist information centres, many Berlin hotels as well as at sales outlets and public transport companies' tickets machines (S-Bahn Berlin GmbH and BVG). You can also get the Berlin Welcome Card directly upon arrival in the arrivals area at the Berlin airports. You can then get the associated guide at the Berlin tourist information centres as well as at BVG and S-Bahn sales outlets.

The sections A and B each cover the actual urban area, whereby the outer limit of section B is largely identical to the city limits. Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER) is located in fare zone Berlin C . For this reason, tourists arriving at the Berlin-Brandenburg airport needs the Berlin Welcome Card for the fare zone ABC in order to have unrestricted use of public transport. Section C extends – measured from the city limits – up to a distance of 10 to 15 km into the surrounding areas. Exceptions here are tourist and special lines and journeys with Deutsche Bahn. Unfortunately, an extension of the Berlin Welcome Card AB to a connection ticket for tariff zone Berlin C is not possible.

Visitors to Berlin who want to travel to Potsdam or Sachsenhausen need the Berlin Welcome Card for fare zone ABC in order to use the public transport service without any restrictions. An extension of the Berlin Welcome Card AB to a connection ticket for tariff zone C is unfortunately not possible.

It is possible to validate the card up to 31/12 of the calendar year in which the purchase was made. However, the latest period of validity is up to 02/01 (48-hour ticket) or 03/01 (72-hour ticket) or 03/01 at midnight (4-day ticket) or 04/01 at midnight (5-day ticket) or 05/01 at midnight (6-day ticket) of the following year.

The public transport ticket must be validated once before starting the journey in the ticket validation machine . The discounts included in the guide are exclusively valid combined with your Berlin Welcome Card travel ticket and only after its validation.

The guide belongs to the Berlin Welcome Card and must always be presented when claiming discounts. You will receive the guide upon presentation of your Berlin Welcome Card ticket (from the machines) at Berlin tourist information centres as well as at BVG and S-Bahn sales outlets.
