DEP Launches New Parks Application for Smartphones

TRENTON - The Department of Environmental Protection launched a new mobile phone application to help visitors plan for and make the most out of their trips to New Jersey's state parks, forests and historic sites.

The free Pocket Ranger application provides information on activities, amenities and services directly to users' smartphones, and is part of the Christie Administration's plan to make the park system more self-sustaining while improving visitor services.

The version of the application compatible with Apple iPhones was launched today. The Android- compatible version will be launched in several days. The applications can be downloaded at www.StateParkApps.com

"We are very proud to offer this new service to the public," said DEP Commissioner Bob Martin. "New Jersey's park system is second to none and has been experiencing record numbers of visitors in recent years. This application gets us in step with the times, making it much easier for people to plan their visits to our wonderful parks, forests and historic sites and make decisions about what to see and do once they get there."

With a few taps of the screen, visitors can use their smartphones to find overviews, directions, operating hours and activities available at various sites managed by the DEP's Division of Parks and Forestry. Visitors can also fine-tune their searches by looking for activities that interest them, such as hiking, bicycling, swimming, fishing, boating, canoe rentals or winter activities.

"With a broad tapestry of rolling green hills, forests, beaches, historic villages and battlefields, and vast natural beauty, New Jersey's parks offer exceptional outdoor recreation for the entire family," said Grace Hanlon, Executive Director of the New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism. "Through this fun and exciting app, our residents and visitors will have another great tool at their fingertips to make their trip even more enjoyable and memorable."

Governor Christie and Commissioner Martin recently released the Administration's long-term strategy for keeping New Jersey's parks open, affordable and even more accessible. The plan establishes a model for parks to generate revenues to make them more self-sustaining while making the park experience more rewarding for millions of visitors by improving visitor services, amenities and activities.

The DEP will receive a portion of advertising revenues generated by the application, which is not costing anything for the department to implement.

"This new ParksByNature application is a first step in the major overhaul and modernization of how we operate and protect our parks," said DEP Chief Project Advisor Lou Valente. "This app will provide immediate benefits to our visitors while providing the DEP with information that we will use to continue to improve the park experience for millions of visitors."

The state park system encompasses 440,000 acres in all 21 counties, and includes more than 50 historic sites, historic battlefields and villages, and 39 active recreation areas with year-round operations. The park system also boasts more than 500 miles of hiking and riding trails and 10 miles of ocean beaches.

Pocket Ranger can help visitors make lodging reservations, has social networking capabilities, and provides an advanced map-caching feature that allows users to continue to navigate even if mobile service is lost. In addition, advanced GPS technology allows hikers to keep track of where they are and how far they've hiked. The same technology enables hunters and anglers to mark favorite hunting spots and fishing holes.

The application also has a Friend Finder feature that allows users to keep track of the location of friends and family. As an added safety feature, Pocket Ranger has an alert feature that notifies select contacts of your GPS coordinates in the event of an emergency.

"Our expectation is for the Pocket Ranger Mobile Tour Guide to encourage a new generation of park goers explore and discover all that New Jersey's state parks have to offer," said ParksByNature co-founder and program coordinator Brett Melillo. "This robust mobile app will not only enhance the visitors' experience, but will also renew overall interest in New Jersey parks and raise the funds needed to preserve and sustain them. It's a win for the state parks and a win for the people of New Jersey."

New Jersey is the ninth state to make the mobile tour guide application available to the public. The others are Pennsylvania, Delaware, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, Missouri, Rhode Island and South Dakota.

Human Services Announces ConnectEBT Mobile App for NJ Residents Receiving SNAP and Income Assistance Benefits

Free App Allows Recipients to Manage SNAP, General Assistance and TANF Benefits on Mobile Devices

October 14, 2021

(TRENTON) – The Department of Human Services today announced that individuals enrolled in the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Work First New Jersey (WFNJ) General Assistance (GA) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) can now download the ConnectEBT mobile app to manage their electronic benefits transfer (EBT) cards on their mobile devices.

Recipients can use the ConnectEBT app to check their balance, review up to 12 months of transaction history, confirm their last benefit deposit and change their PIN. The mobile app is free and available for download in the  Apple App Store  and  Google Play Store.

“This is another step to make SNAP and income assistance benefit information more accessible for NJ families. Through this app they can check their balance on the go and will have other helpful information regarding their benefits at their fingertips” said Acting Commissioner Sarah Adelman.

“We know digital tools help overcome barriers to the accessibility of SNAP benefits and other critical food assistance,” said Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin, who sponsored a bill signed into law in September by Governor Murphy to provide SNAP recipients with mobile access to their SNAP benefits. “Making access to benefit information both easy and convenient, today’s announcement of the ConnectEBT app is one of a series of steps New Jersey is taking to ensure no individual or family relying on these programs misses out.”

The ConnectEBT app is the official app for New Jersey's SNAP and Work First New Jersey programs. The app, developed by Conduent, Inc., is available in English and Spanish, and provides a safe and convenient way for SNAP and WFNJ recipients to view benefits and account information and access other customer service functions through their mobile devices.

“Individuals can currently check some of this information online or by calling a customer service hotline and now the app provides another quick way for families enrolled in these programs to check balances, change their PIN and check receipt of new benefits at any time,” said Deputy Commissioner Elisa Neira.

“We encourage families enrolled in these programs to download the free app which is already available and get quick and easy access to their benefit details” said Human Services Assistant Commissioner Natasha Johnson, who directs the Division of Family Development, which oversees NJ SNAP and WFNJ.

Recipients can search for and download the ConnectEBT mobile app from Google Play or the Apple App Store, depending on the type of mobile device they are using and register their EBT card account. Once installed, recipients will have to validate their identity, and use the same username and passw ord for the mobile app as they use for their web portal.

This is the latest effort by the Department to extend digital services to program recipients. Last year, the Department launched online grocery shopping for SNAP recipients. Recipients can now use their EBT cards to grocery shop online at the following retailers: Amazon, participating Walmarts, ShopRites, The Fresh Grocers, ALDIs, Stop & Shop, Food Bazaar, Super Foodtown stores in Port Monmouth, Red Bank, Ocean, Atlantic Highlands and Sea Girt, and BJ’s Wholesale Club, which is the latest company to make online grocery shopping available to SNAP recipients in the state.

No one helps

What is going to take to help when one of you riders has a problem, I’m new to buying anything I was always scare, and sure enough I bought a pass of 30 days, because I got a one month job in NYC, so to make it worth it saving money I bought a pass, well apparently I bought the wrong pass, I try using it for the first time on Tuesday of this week because that was when the job start it, I got an Intrastate instead of a interstate, so the driver made me aware of it I had no idea, that same day I went to custumer service in port authority Ny, and they gave me a number to call and no one help they were supposed to call me back and no one did I sent 2 messages through the app and nothing, so now I’m here writing this message to plead for someone to help me or guide of what to do, my savings are not savings any more because I’m paying out of my pocket and I can’t use the up, I need a refund to buy the right pass

Buy paper tix until this app is fixed

App was fine before in early summer when I used it, as of Aug 25th 2023 is very glitchy, wouldn’t process my (easy) ticket I normally get and a friend traveling with me ended up accidentally buying 6 (!) of the same tickets because the app kept telling them the purchase didn’t go through and to try again. They did actually go through, even after refreshing things the app didn’t send a pop up notice the purchase was successful, and NJ Transit didn’t send a receipt promptly via email saying so. Being on a train platform or on a train running into ticket/app problems creates high stress and headaches for conductors who end up hearing valid excuses why you can’t show your ticket, or that you were just overcharged trying to buy 1 but ended up with 6. Apparently NJ Transit doesn’t like giving refunds (what a scam) so my friends forced to try to use the extra tix to a location she doesn’t often go. NJ has a millions of tech IT people who can capably fix app bugs I’m sure.. NJ Transit management needs to hire better tech developers to keep these problems from happening-do more test runs before releasing a new update. Amateurs should not be running an app that a half million people or so need for train commuting. Please stay on top of tech issues and fix asap! Or just go back to paper tickets til app bugs are sorted out.

New version looks nice but WONKY and nonsensical.

The new version of the app looks nice and modern. But it’s very annoying that my monthly pass pops up instantly when clicking “my tickets” because i actually have other tickets! Also it displays horizontally, which is annoying because I never asked it to rotate. If the ticket wants to display horizontally to distinguish a monthly from a single use, fine, but the functions should still remain at the bottom because I’m not holding my phone sideways, I’m holding it vertically. It’s very frustrating when trying to close the monthly pass to continue using the app or display another ticket. Also, the new version’s “schedule” feature got rid of displaying if a route has transfers on the results screen. I almost stayed on a train that had a transfer to get to where I was going because you have to CLICK the route to see wether or not you need to transfer to a different line or not. The old version said wether or not a route had transfers or not up front. It’s very misleading because I want to avoid trains with transfers if I can, and people who are new to NJ transit will for sure stay on a train instead of transfer if they don’t click to expand the route info because they’re under the impression there are no transfers if It doesn’t say so up front. Please bring that feature back. Everything else is fine I guess.

'Codfather' boat sunk, sleeps with the fishes in artificial reef off Jersey Shore

Three-minute read.

visit nj mobile app

The Axel Carlson Reef off the Jersey Shore has a new structure that was once part of the fleet of the infamous "Codfather" Carlos Rafael, a commercial fishermen who went to jail for mislabeling fish in 2016.

Rafael, a Portuguese immigrant in New Bedford, Massachusetts, went from a high school dropout cleaning fish on the docks to controlling one of the largest fishing fleets in the United States until IRS agents posing as Russian mobsters cut him down. Rafael was getting around federal quotas by mislabeling fish and getting higher prices for his catch on the market. He has since been released from prison .

When he went to jail, his entire fleet of boats worth millions of dollars was seized by the IRS and sold off. One of those boats was the Carrabassett, a 90-foot steel dragger. It was purchased by a New England commercial outfit that ran the boat aground, cracking the hull open.

The boat then caught fire at drydock and was going to go on the scrap metal market when New Jersey's artificial reef program coordinator Peter Clarke was able to secure it in order to add it to the Axel Carlson Reef, a man-made reef that sits 2.1 miles off the coast of Point Pleasant Beach.

No fish tale: After 4-hour fight, 2 fishermen land 718-pound giant bluefin tuna off Manasquan coast

The boat cost $50,000 and was paid for by funds donated by the Manasquan River Marlin & Tuna Club and The Sportfishing Fund on a 50-50 split. The Manasquan club raised the money through its prestigious Offshore Open and Bluefin Open tournaments, held annually in August and June.

The sportfishing fund was established in 1988 by a private donor as a nonprofit dedicated to funding artificial reef projects.

"The Manasquan guys have donated a ton. They're one of the biggest donors to the reef program in the state" Clarke said.

The NJ Fish & Wildlife Artificial Reef Program was begun in 1984 now has built 17 reefs off the coast and one in Delaware Bay. The program uses decommissioned rail cars, old tug boats, former commercial vessels and concrete reef balls to build the reefs. All vessels and rail cars are cleaned, removing all oils and fuels before being sunk,

The purpose is to create a network of artificial reefs in the ocean waters along the New Jersey coast to provide a hard substrate for fish, shellfish and crustaceans, fishing grounds for anglers, and underwater structures for scuba divers. Deployments are donated and funded by outside organizations with oversight and coordination provided by the NJDEP Fish and Wildlife’s Artificial Reef Program.

"Fishermen like a good story. Stories are what makes it fun and they're going to get a kick out of saying they caught fish, or they dove on the Carrabassett," said Brian Kimmins, vice president of the Manasquan River Marlin & Tuna Club.

Artificial reefs: ‘Perfect Storm’ ship sunk off New Jersey coast

Reef building is one of the ways the club, which is the oldest marlin and tuna club in the U.S., gives back to the sportfishing community.

"The reefs are a huge part of the inshore fishery. It's what attracts the fish here and enhances our fisheries," Kimmins said.

The Carrabassett was sunk earlier this month in 72 feet of water on the Axel Carlson Reef. Clarke said it usually takes about five years for a new reef structure to be covered in marine life in order to sustain species of fish such as sea bass, blackfish, fluke and shellfish like lobster.

Artificial reefs: Manasquan reef site honors late Manasquan River Marlin & Tuna Club member

Some reef pieces have been exceptions. Clarke said a structure they sunk on Little Egg Reef became inundated with mussels within 16 months and had blackfish, a popular game fish species, living on it. While the reefs get visited by fishermen all year round, they're also a destination for recreational divers.
