Our self-guided Walking Tour of Lyon

Praline of Lyon

A Brief History of Lyon

Lyon was founded by the Romans in 43BC, and become the capital of Gaul and one of the most important cities of the Roman empire. Later it became famous as the capital of the French silk weaving industry, and there are hundreds of hidden passageways, called Traboules, that weave through Lyon’s old town area. These were used by the weavers to transport their products from one part of town to the other without having to brave the weather.

Today, Lyon is known as the gastronomic capital of France. Yes it has lots of Michelin starred restaurants, but it’s better known for the traditional bistrots that offer traditional dishes and local specialties at budget-friendly prices. They’re best known for their three-course set lunch specials.

What to See in Lyon

The central area of Lyon is between the river Rhône and the river Saône, and consists of the 1st, 2nd, and 4th arrondissements. We stayed in the 1st and it was teeming with life and places to eat. The rest of this promontory features lots of square plazas surrounded by majestic renaissance apartment buildings, there also a mix of broad pedestrian shopping streets and narrow lanes connecting these squares.

Arrondissements of Lyon

The Place Bellecour

The Place Bellecour, is the third biggest square in France, and is the central hub for this area’s pedestrianized shopping streets. We wandered up Rue de la République which leads towards the Hotel de Ville and Opera Nouvel towards the area we were staying in the 1st arrondissement.

Rue de Republic looking back at the square

From Place Bellecour head to the northwest corner and walk west across the Pond Bonaparte bridge to reach the other side of the river Saône. Continue straight on for about 100 meters and you’ll reach the Funicular railway. Take line F2 to Fourvière.

La Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière

Notre Dame de Fourvière is the highest vantage point in this part of the city, and is home to the 19th century basilica which is a stark example of neo-Byzantine architecture. If you’ve been to Paris before, you’ll recognize the style as similar to the Sacré-Coeur in Montmartre.

It’s an impressive building, full of intricate mosaics and colorful stained-glass windows, but what grabbed our attention was the view of Lyon spread out before us.

View of Lyon from the Basilica

It was exceptionally chilly up there because of the winds, but the walk up the 800 steps and slopes to reach here warmed us up. Needless to say, the walk back down was a lot more fun.

Between the Basilica and the Saône is the old town quarter known as  Vieux Lyon . This was the area I’d wanted to stay in, but was glad we only visited here. It was interesting to walk around, and there were plenty of businesses down the narrow cobbled stone streets and clustered around the tiny squares, but it was pretty devoid of life and energy in February.

I’m sure during the summer it is teeming with tourist, but it was off-season so it was like a ghost town during our exploration of the traboules. These passageways date back to the 4th century and weave through buildings, courtyards, and up and down steps and stairways. They were used by the silk workers to carry heavy loads of textiles from their workshops in the Croix-Rousse area, to the merchants located at the foot of the hill so that they didn’t get wet or dirty being carried through the streets.

Maybe this area livens up at night, but we didn’t stick around to see.

Fresque des Lyonnais

Fresque des Lyonnais

Located in the 1st arrondissement on the banks of the Saône near Pont de la Feuillée is an intricate Trompe L’Oeil. We’ve encountered a few of these during our trip around France, but this was by far the most impressive.

Fresque des Lyonnais

The longer we looked at it, the more details we spotted. Just imagine the labor of love this project must have been.

Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse

Chef Paul is one of the reasons that Lyon is dubbed France’s capital of gastronomy.

Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse

Being die-hard foodies we just had to pay a visit to this market. Reviews online harp on about how expensive it is, even for everyday items, but if you’re into food markets then pay a visit to this one—nobody is saying you have to buy anything.

Mural of Paul Bocuse in Lyon

After wandering around the well organized aisles of this covered market, looking and smelling the delicious cheeses and marveling at the freshness of the seafood, and the high prices of the busy restaurants, we were happy to find Toke, an understated little place for a snack lunch.

Toke. French Empanadas

They had a great selection of vegetarian pasties, that looked like oversized empanadas, and are cooked to order.

We chose a trio of the coconut milk hummus, carrot, and caramelized onion, the Jerusalem artichoke, black mushroom, blue cheese, and garlic confit, and the spinach, ricotta cheese and fresh berry goat cheese. all of them were tasty, but the mushroom and blue cheese was such a mouth-watering combination, that we ordered two more.

Toke. French Empanadas

Washed down with a refreshing glass of the award winning Belgium style wheat beer, Mandrin blonde. I’m more of a wine girl, but was a thirst-quenching beverage.

Happy Camper

We were transfixed by the local Lyon speciality, praline (header image), but not inquisitive enough to try it.

What is praline. A speciality of Lyon

Preferring instead a tangy goat cheese covered in edible flowers.

Bridges of Lyon

The city straddles two rivers, so there’s no shortage of bridges, and here’s a couple of my faves.

Bridges of Lyon

After spending all day exploring, we headed back to our neighbourhood for a relax and a rest in our little apartment before staying local for a night out.

Lyon is a fabulous walking city. It reminds me of Paris. The architecture, the river, the bridge, the French! all combining together to make a visit a memorable experience. We had three nights here, and we could have stayed longer. We only scratched the surface of Lyon, but we saw enough to know we’ll be back.

Lyon City Greeter

If you don’t want to go on a self-guided walking tour of the city, you should take a look at the Greeters France website . They offer volunteers to welcome you to Lyon for free, who’ll take you on a 2-3 hour walk of the city, and show you their favourite sights. Simply fill out a form on their website, and let them know what kind of things you’re interested in, and they’ll partner you up with a volunteer who’ll contact you via email to arrange the day and time for your tour.

We were going to use the Lyon Greeter service, but ended up exploring on our own. But if you’re short on time, it’s a great option to see some highlights and get an inside track on where to eat and drink.

Haven’t been to Lyon but would have this summer. Food and Lyon’s hospitality is what I look forward to experiencing. I have added another attraction from your blog to my list – the mural of Paul Bocuse! I did not know of this mural until now. Thank you so much for this self-guided blog on Lyon which I am sure to use on my visit.

Lyon is defiantly a foodie heaven. We loved this market, and the diverse selection of restaurants from around the globe … oh and the cheese!

I have never visited Lyon but your description definitely makes me want to go! I love anywhere that the focus is on delicious food & reading this has left my mouth watering, especially seeing the photos of the delicious pasties…Yum!

I loved that they were baked to order, and that there was such a diverse selection of fillings available.

Ah, you had me at Lyon! This has been on my list for years, and think it will finally be my destination for 2021! As a foodie and lover of all things French, I think I’ll love it. The vegetarian pasties and edible flower goat cheese looks and sounds delicious. I love how you have described old town. I have pinned this for future planning.

I was surprised by the wide range of goat cheese flavors — ranging from pungent and strong with overtones of sour, to creamy and mild, and all stages in between.

I would love to spend a few days exploring the hidden passageways through Lyon’s old town area. I would find it hard to walk past an old book shop without spending a couple of hours looking around.

I’d much rather wander the back streets and alleyways of a city than stick to its main boulevards. I think you get a better sense for the heart and soul of a city that way.

I love reading about your French trips and this one looks a lot of fun. I would like to try it if only for the Praline buns or the goats cheese with flowers! It seems like a city that easy to navigate but with plenty to see and do. Thanks for sharing.

My Profile

I really want to visit Lyon, we spend a lot of time in the Alsace and I just want to see more of France as soon as things are back to normal. Also, that goat cheese looks incredible Jay, how was it? Hopefully as good as it tastes! Stay safe 🙂

I always love reading about your travels in France, it always makes me want to go on an adventure 🙂 And that goat cheese, oh my!

I fell in love with France .. utterly and completely.

Well, I can totally belive you, cuz I am kind off falling in love with your version of France that you are telling 🙂

We’ll definitely be back. There’s so much more to explore.

I love walking tours and therefore exploring Lyon while walking must be very interesting. And as Lyon is good for foodies, then I would love this place more. Mural of Paul Bocuse in Lyon near the market which is named after him is really beautiful and I would love to explore this gastronomy paradise. Even the bridges of Lyon are very photogenic.

Yes there’s Lyon has lots of charm, and you certainly won’t go hungry!

I’ve only been to Lyon once, and it was more like a stopover before heading down to Nice. I had no idea Lyon was the gastronomic capital of France. I’m a big foodie, so I’m putting Lyon on my list over places I have to go and eat haha. Thanks for sharing!

There’s so many fab places to visit isn’t there? Nice was on our list, but we had to leave the country and cut our trip short. But we’ll make it there on the next trip .. and Marseilles.

This is a very interesting and thorough review of this gorgeous place! I especially loved reading about the history of Lyon and learned some things I didn’t know previously. The images are really great and paint a lovely picture of this fantastic destination! Thanks so much for sharing!

You’re welcome Michelle .. I loved sharing this blog post because it brought back some lovely memories. And that’s the beauty of being a blogger, you get to experience places multiple times. Once for real, and then each time you write about them.

Lyon sounds like the perfect destination, with not too many tourists. I usually like to do a walking tour when arriving at a new destination just so I can get a bit of the history before venturing out on my own, so I would definitely book one, and the food! What can get better than mushroom and goat cheese! I definitely need to add Lyon to my list of places to visit (and eat).

Walking around a new city is the best way to experience it – so I guess that makes me an ardent slow traveller.

Lyon is in my future travel list and your blog post has given me a lot of ideas of what to do there. I would love to explore the traboules of Lyon’s vieux quartier. It looks like a city with a lot to see. I am sure it was worth walking 800 steps and slopes to reach Notre Dame de Fourvière. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

It was well worth the hike up the hill for the view and the cathedral.

We were only there a few days… but loved it, and on the first day were already planning our return trip.

The 19th century neo-Byzantine architecture will be my biggest draw to visit Lyon. As a former architect, I will spend hours marvelling at the delicate design of Notre Dame de Fourvière. The bonus will be the view of the city. Realising that Lyon is just about 6 hours on a road trip makes it all tantalising. Bookmarked for later.

The architecture was beautiful, and reminded us so much of Paris. If you’d dropped us into this town, without telling us where it was. I would have guessed, Paris.

Sounds like my kind of walking tour – lots of food and lots of visual stimulation for photos. That goat cheese with edible flowers is so pretty!

Even in the biggest of cities I much prefer to explore them on foot. You get to see so much more this way.

I’ll be honest, I would go just for those pastries! What beauty!! I could picture myself in Lyon as I was reading it. Love your writing and photography. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks Courtney … yes we had our fare share of pastries in France, I love the red berry creme patisserie tart.

My boyfriend is from the south of France and I would LOVE to travel to Lyon with him. Sorry to hear Vieux Lyon was basically a ghost town! I am so happy to see that they served vegetarian options, as when I last when to France I mostly ate baguette to avoid any meat.

I’d love to see Vieux Lyon when it’s busy, but it was still a great place to walk around when it was so deserted.

I have never visited Lyon, however now I feel I’ve traveled with you! What a beautiful place. So glad yo see they have veggie options as i always end up eating chips to avoid meat. The murals on the walls are awesome too! I have added this to my bucket list and can’t wait to visit!

In some of the places we visited in France it was difficult to find vegetarian options, but Lyon was fabulous for choice if you don’t eat meat.

I have never visited Lyon, but loved reading your post. Lyon looks so beautiful with cobbled stoned streets and I always prefer walking tours to know the city better. The views from La Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière looks amazing. The food and Goat cheese in edible flowers looks yummy.

I was really impressed with how much milder the goat cheese was here in France. I’m sure there are some pungent versions, but all the one’s we had were mellow and creamy.

Such a lovely tour of Lyon through your eyes. I find a lot of similarity with Paris yet it has it’s own charm which is so different again. Seeing the bridges makes me want to go now. If only we could. One thing that I love about Europe, having traveled to many countries, is the wide variety of cheese that we keep gorging on. It would be great to try out the goat cheese with the edible flowers. Looks enticing.

As long as there’s a cheese option on the menu, I’m happy! France is perfect for that.

Hi Jay .. I have never been to France and hence to Lyon , though I have heard about the mention and that it is famous for the culinary delights. reading your post I could understand what food is so much emphasised out here. The murals on the wall and the vibes of the places are so visible. Have never tried goat cheese with edible flowers, this is the first time I heard of edible flowers.

Nearly every city we visited in France had stunning wall murals. Seems to be a thing here. Just wish there had been more street art.

Ooh, Lyon has been on my bucket list for ages! Two friends lived there for a while and were always going on about how great the food is. I’ll definitely be making a visit to Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse – that “fresh berry goat cheese” you mentioned sounds to die for. So does the goat cheese covered in edible flowers. Okay, maybe I just really like goat cheese!

I’d go back in a heartbeat. It really is a foodie heaven. So many places in France only have local cuisine, which is a lot of meat, but Lyon offers so much more.

I haven’t been to Lyon yet, but I feelI I have to add it on my bucket list after reading your article. The city looks really beautiful, like that Trompe L’Oeil near Pont de la Feuillée – fantastic! Not to mention that food sounds great too 🙂

The food was fantastic, we were so lucky where we stayed, there was such a diverse range of cuisines.

I have spent a few weekends in Lyon as it was only 90 minutes away from where my hubby and I lived in France, we just to make pilgrimages to go to the Ikea which is in Lyon’s surroundings. The best thing to do in Lyon is walk and eat and that’s what I did!

Ah .. the pilgrimages to Ikea! I know those well. Our local Ikea in Turkey is in Izmir .. so it’s an overnight trip to go and have a walk around the shop. They have a delivery centre near us in Bodrum, but it’s only small. But I love me a bit of Ikea!!

Wow! This is the 2nd time that I read about french empanadas today and I am really curious about that. Would love to them in the future. Looks really delicious.

Great when you’re looking for vegetarian options. We went back for seconds. 🙂

This looks like such a lovely city. I love the Trompe L’Oeil too! Wow! I can only imagine how long that took to create. I like your suggestion about the “Greeters” tours. We took a walking tour with Munich Greeters in Germany and had the treat of having a retired university professor take us around the city for 8 HOURS! He was amazing! He allowed us to buy him lunch but otherwise wouldn’t accept any payment. I highly recommend the “Greeters” organization.

That’s great to hear about your positive experience with the Greeters. I think it’s a fantastic idea, and would love to make the most of them on future trips.

Those look amazing, the combination of Black mushroom and Garlic makes them yummy and mouth watering – I really can’t wait to pack my suitcase again. Food when traveling always tastes a lot better. I want to eat my way around the world.

Well there’s plenty of choice in Lyon … you would certainly be able to taste lots of different global cuisines there.

I’ve never been to Lyon, but would love to visit someday! I’m all for self-guided walking tours and budget-friendly food! I’d love to check out the market–those vegetarian pasties sound amazing!

Saint George’s Church is one of the most picturesque buildings in Lyon . It’s been built and rebuilt several times. And the church you see today was completed in 1848.

It sits on the banks of the Saône next to some of the most colorful buildings in Lyon’s oldest district. So, why not wake up early and appreciate this neo-gothic masterpiece at sunrise? It’s the perfect way to start your trip!

Useful Tip : The best spot to watch the sunrise is at the corner of Passerelle Saint Georges de Lyon and Quai Tilsitt.

Vieux Lyon or Old Lyon is the oldest district in the city. And, in 1998, it received UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

Whether you want to explore a museum or enjoy an espresso on a terrace, there’s something for everyone. But I recommend spending the early morning hours wandering through the narrow cobblestoned streets and gazing at the pink-hued Renaissance-style buildings. It’s interesting to see what Lyon looked like before the more modern buildings started appearing.

Some of the most charming alleys include Rue de la Loge, Rue Saint-Jean, and Rue du Bœuf.

Nearest Metro Stop : Vieux Lyon – Cathédrale Saint-Jean (Line D)

Admire Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste

The Ever-Beautiful Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste

This Gothic-style cathedral is one of the most impressive churches in France . Construction began in 1080 and didn’t finish until 300 years later. And when you visit, it’s easy to see why it took so long.

While the exterior of the church is beautiful, you’ll find several hidden gems inside. The most extraordinary is, of course, Lyon’s Astronomical Clock. Not only does it show the date but also the position of the planets. It’s something to see if you’re spending three days in Lyon!

Useful Tip : During the Festival of Lights, a candle is placed in the window of the church. It’s a tradition that has continued since 1643! So, if you’re in town during the festival, be sure to check it out.

Address : Place Saint-Jean

Visit Musée Cinéma et Miniature

Scene from Independence Day at the Cinema and Miniature Museum

Did you know that the first motion-picture projector was invented in Lyon?

So, of course, if you’re in Lyon you have to visit the Musée Cinéma et Miniature (Miniature and Cinema Museum)!

They have two permanent exhibits onsite. The first is dedicated to special effects. You’ll see how filmmakers created scenes from movies like Independence Day and The Matrix. They have an extensive collection of props, costumes, sets, and models to show you exactly how these effects were done.

The second collection contains miniature scenes from everyday life. And, despite their size, every figurine and object has been made with extreme precision. It’s something you have to see for yourself.

Of the museums in Lyon, this one was my favorite.

Admission : €13.90

Opening Hours :

  • Monday to Friday – 10:00 am to 6:30 pm
  • Saturday and Sunday – 10:00 am to 7:00 pm

Address : 60 Rue Saint-Jean

Dine at a Traditional Bouchon

Tucked away in the winding cobblestoned streets, these small eateries offer the best Lyonnaise cuisine. Some of the dishes you’ll find on the menu include coq-au-vin, quenelles , and duck pâté.

While many restaurants claim to be a traditional bouchon, there are only 20 ‘real’ ones in Lyon. So, make sure to keep your eyes peeled when choosing where to eat.

They should have a seal that says, “Les Bouchons Lyonnais.” Then, in small writing underneath it will say, “Éstablishement recommendé par l’Office de Tourisme et la CCI de Lyon.”

Below is a list of the best bouchons in Vieux Lyon:

  • Bouchon Les Lyonnais – 19 Rue de la Bombarde
  • Daniel & Denise Saint-Jean – 36 Rue Tramassac
  • Les Fines Gueules – 16 Rue Lainerie

I recommend this food tour in Vieux Lyon .

Tour the Fourvière Basilica

The interior of the Fourvière Basilica in Lyon

Compared to the other churches in Lyon, Fourvière Basilica is quite young. Construction started in the late 19th century, and it took only 30 years to finish.

Today, it sits atop Fourvière Hill overlooking the city. And, on a sunny day, its immaculate white exterior glistens in the sun, beckoning visitors. It’s a hike to see this beauty, but your efforts will be worth it.

From its courtyard, you’ll have unencumbered views of the city below. But that’s not all. The inside of the basilica is just as stunning. Its stained-glass windows and mosaic-lined ceiling are masterpieces in and of themselves.

Address : 8 Place de Fourvière

Nearest Metro Stop : Fourvière (Funiculars F2)

Visit the Gallo-Roman Amphitheater

The Gallo-Roman Amphitheater in Lyon

Lyon is home to several historical sites , but none is more fascinating than the Gallo-Roman Amphitheater. Built in 15 BC, this ancient stadium was mostly used for entertainment. And it could sit a whopping 10,000 people!

Today, you can explore the ruins and imagine what it must have been like during its heyday. They are remarkably intact, and, best of all, admission is free!

In summer, the amphitheater plays host to the Nuits de Fourvière, a yearly festival dedicated to the performing arts. From opera and dance to film, it’s a chance to take part in Lyonnaise culture and support local artists. Be sure to check it out if you’re in town.

Address : 17 Rue Cleberg

Nearest Metro Stop : Minimes Théatres Romains (Funiculars F2)

Enjoy the Lugdunum Museum

Located next to the amphitheater, the Lugdunum Museum is a must-visit if you’re spending three days in Lyon. It’s dedicated to preserving and displaying artifacts that date to prehistoric times.

While they have a massive collection, there are a few exhibits that you shouldn’t miss. The most significant include the Lyon Tablet and the Gallic Coligny calendar.

Useful Tip : The Lugdunum Museum was once called the Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon-Fourvière. So, don’t get confused if you see both names. They are the same museum.

Admission : €7.00

  • Tuesday to Friday – 11:00 am to 6:00 pm
  • Saturday and Sunday – 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Address : 17 Rue Cléberg

Relax in Jardin des Curiosités

View from the Jardin des Curiosités in Lyon

After exploring all the wonderful sites in Fourvière, head to Jardin des Curiosités for a break.

This small unsuspecting garden is around the corner and hidden from plain view. You’ll follow Place de l’Abbé Larue to a small footpath covered with tall trees. It doesn’t seem like much, but once you reach the end of the path, you’ll have one of the best views over Lyon.

It’s a small garden with only a few benches. So, if you want to enjoy a packed lunch, get there early.

Address : 8 Place de l’Abbé Larue

Admire the Church of Saint-Just

The Church of Saint-Just in Lyon

The Church of Saint-Just is the most unsuspecting yet beautiful church in Lyon. I stumbled on this hidden gem while I was on my way to the Jardin des Curiosités. Its bright turquoise doors will no doubt catch your eye as well.

While most churches in Lyon are Catholic, the Church of Saint-Just is Orthodox . It first appeared in the 16th century but was destroyed during the French Revolution. So, the Neoclassical church that you see today is from the 18th century.

If you ever wonder why you should visit France , this is it. You no doubt stumble on something without even trying!

Address : 41 Rue des Farges

Marvel at the Fresque des Lyonnais

Fresque des Lyonnais in Lyon

The Fresque des Lyonnais is a gigantic mural located in the first arrondissement of Lyon. It was commissioned by the city in the mid-1990s and completed by a group of artists called Cité de la Création.

This remarkable masterpiece measures a whopping 800 square meters (8611 square feet)! It features 30 portraits of famous people from Lyon as well as a few everyday scenes. The painting is so detailed and life-like they look real!

Fun Fact: In French, such an optical illusion is called a trompe l’oeil.

Address : Corner of 49 Quai Saint Vincent and 2 Rue de la Martinière

Nearest Metro Stop : Hôtel de Ville L. Prade (Line A)

Get Lost in the Cour des Voraces

The Oldest Staircase in Lyon in the Cour des Voraces

Lyon is full of secret passages or traboules. But the Cour des Voraces is the most famous.

In the late 19th century, it was used as a refuge for silk manufacturers during their revolts. Then, during World War II, locals used it to hide from the Germans.

Today, the Cour des Voraces is a symbol of resistance. It’s also home to the oldest and most photographed reinforced staircase in Lyon.

Useful Tip : Finding this staircase is quite an adventure. To do so, head to 14 Mont Saint-Sébastien and go through the door. Walk to the end of the alleyway then turn right. Before the staircase that leads down to another alley, there will be a doorway on your right. Enter and walk to the stairs. Behind you will be the famous staircase.

Address : 14 Mont Saint-Sébastien

Nearest Metro Stop : Croix Paquet (Line C)

Take in the Views from Jardin du Gros Caillou

View from Jardin du Gros Caillou in Lyon

There’s no denying that I’m a sucker for views and the one from Jardin du Gros Caillou doesn’t disappoint.

If you’re coming from the Cour des Voraces, it’s an uphill slog to the top and takes about 30 minutes. But your efforts will be worth it. The area isn’t known by many, so you’ll be able to enjoy Lyon from above without the crowds.

On the way down follow Rue des Fantasques. You’ll pass several small gardens with some unique vantage points.

Nearest Metro Stop : Croix-Rousse and Croix Paquet (Line C)

Explore La Croix-Rousse Neighborhood

Most Colorful Street in the Croix-Rousse neighborhood in Lyon

The sites listed here on day three as all in the Croix-Rousse neighborhood. But you should spend some time exploring the area in more depth. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to take a deep dive into Lyon’s culture.

This quaint arrondissement is full of colorful buildings, steep staircases, and cobbled streets. It was once home to silk workers and has retained much of its industrial heritage, including the iconic silk-weaving looms.

Meander through the streets, pop in local shops, or hang out at one of the trendy cafés. It’s also one of the safest areas to stay in town .

Useful Tip : For the most colorful buildings head to Mont de la Grande-Côte. It’s a pedestrian-only street that runs the length of the neighborhood.

Discover Parc de la Tête d’Or

Rose Gardens in Parc de la Tête d'Or in Lyon

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and head to Parc de la Tête d’Or. Located in the sixth arrondissement, this urban park is one of Lyon’s best-kept secrets. It’s filled with lush gardens, picnic areas, and peaceful lakes – all perfect for exploring on foot or by bike.

If you’re visiting in summer, make sure to stop by the rose garden. They have thousands of varieties in every color imaginable.

Entrance to the Park: Corner of Boulevard Anatole France and Avenue Verguin

Nearest Metro Stop : Masséna (Line A)

I recommend this tour of Parc de la Tête d’Or

There is no shortage of hotels in Lyon. So, I’ve put together a list of the best hotels in Lyon. And there’s something for every budget!

  • MEININGER Hotel Lyon Centre Berthelot – The best budget option in the city. The rooms are immaculate and well-designed. They have parking, a bar, and an amazing breakfast.
  • Boscolo Lyon Hotel & Spa – A magnificent hotel located in the center of Lyon. The staff is friendly, and the rooms are spacious. It’s a luxury hotel, but worth every penny.
  • Radisson Blu Hotel, Lyon – A beautiful hotel with stunning panoramic views. The rooms are modern and comfortable. There’s even a restaurant and bar on site!

Lyon is the gastronomy capital of France, so, of course, there are tons of restaurants. I listed a few places above, but here are a few more that are worth checking out.

  • Boulangerie Du Palais – Best sandwiches in town, no questions asked. There’s always a line, so try to get there before the afternoon rush. I couldn’t get enough of this place!
  • BAP Restaurant Coréen – If you’re looking for something different, this is the best Korean restaurant in town. The food is fresh, tasty, and full of flavor.
  • L’Atelier des Augustins – Fine dining at its best. It’s a modern restaurant with a unique menu. And they even pair the wine with your dish. Prices are higher than the other options on this list, but you won’t regret it!

By Plane – Lyon has two airports – Lyon Saint-Exupéry International Airport and Lyon-Bron Business Airport. If you’re looking to travel to Lyon by plane, you’ll use Lyon Saint-Exupéry International Airport. It’s well-served by several major airlines.

Get the best deals on flights here

By Train – Trains from bigger cities like Paris, Marseille, and Strasbourg have regular trains that go to and from Lyon. Since so many high-speed trains run to Lyon, you’ll most likely use the train to get in. It’s fast, efficient, and cheap.

Lyon has three train stations and those are listed below:

  • Lyon Part Dieu is the main station in the city center. It’s used by most incoming and outgoing trains in France (like TGV, TER, and OUIGO).
  • Lyon Perrache used to be the main station and is still used by some companies.
  • Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport Station is used to get to and from Lyon’s international airport. The ride takes about 30 minutes.

Book your train tickets to Lyon by clicking here .

By Car – Driving to Lyon is another option. There are private hires, or you can rent a car in any city (Paris, Strasbourg, etc.).

To rent a car, I recommend and use Discover Cars . They search local and international companies to find you the best deals.

By Bus – Buses from most major cities go to Lyon. From Paris, buses run regularly and take about six hours. Buses leave and arrive at Lyon Perrache (Central Bus Station).

Book your bus tickets by clicking here .

There are several options for getting around Lyon.

By Public Transportation – Lyon has an extensive public transportation network. It’s made up of trains, metros, and buses. Within the city, you’ll only need the metro lines and buses. Single tickets cost €1.90 while purchasing a carnet (book of ten tickets) is €17.60. In general, both the metros and buses are easy and convenient to use.

Useful Tip : Lyon also has a series of funiculars (or cable cars). They are used to reach the Croix-Rousse and Fourvière neighborhoods, which are both on a steep hill. If you don’t want to walk, these funiculars are very convenient.

By Car – Driving around Lyon is not as practical as using public transportation. Streets are narrow and parking is limited. You’ll most likely end up walking more because you’ll have to park so far away. If you’re doing a road trip or you want to explore the smaller cities around Lyon, then renting a car is the best option.

By Taxi – There are both taxis and Uber in Lyon. If you don’t want to use public transportation, this is the next fastest option.

By Walking – Lyon is a walker-friendly city. This is always my preferred mode of transportation. You can take the metro to the neighborhood you want to visit, then explore on foot!

View of Lyon from the Fourvière Basilica in November

  • April to June – This is one of the best times to visit Lyon. The weather is pleasant, and the summer crowds have yet to arrive. Prices are low and there are plenty of accommodation options.
  • July to August – This is the worst time to visit Lyon. The sun is shining, and the weather is good, but the crowds are unbearable. Prices are at the highest and you’ll have a difficult time finding accommodation.
  • September to November – Another amazing time to visit Lyon. The weather is cool but not cold. The summer crowds have left, and prices start to drop. It’s also a great time to see some fall colors. If I had to choose, this is my absolute favorite time to visit Lyon!
  • December to March – While the winters in Lyon are mild, they can also be gloomy and grey. If you plan to ski in the Alps, then this is a good time to visit.

Yes, Lyon is a very walkable city. It’s best to visit a single neighborhood (or area) at a time. Each one has tons of things to do but they are small enough to explore on foot. Then, if you want to move to another area, you can pass through a traboule to shorten your walk!

Great info, presented well. loved being led around the old city center and discovering actual locations involved in the Fren h resistance.

Excellent tour. Well paced and informative. Would recommend this as a quick way to get a feel for the role that Lyon played during WW2.

Please Re-walk the trail and update the descriptions of the buildings and their locations.

Some directions were confusing. I never saw the Creamery (?) or the “charming cafe” (?). Maybe some updates are needed.

Great tour, but issues with the app slowed us down and were a little frustrating. Better instructions are required when you use the app for the first time.

Very informative and taking in very interesting places along the way!

Geolocation for auto-start works well. More audio material, esp between the key spots (ie continuous audio) would be great.

An easy way to explore back streets, learn their stories… and end up more informed than most who live here!

some routes didn't marry up with directions, some areas were not accessible. not the tour, but Lyon should do more to keep this history intact.

Très agréable !!!! Merci André

Incredibly informative, it felt like you were truly walking in the footsteps of the resistance.

France and England didn't delare war, France and Great Britain did. please correct this appalling mistake! Many Scots,Welsh and Northern Irish people died in this conflict and you have just cancelled them from history.

Too much information

Informative and well organized tour! Great way to see the physical locations of the Lyon resistance.

Interesting but yet difficult to use

magnifique temoignage qui rend hommage aux gommes et aux lieux qui ont lutte et construit notre avenir. merci.

Good tour, but please make it downloadable beforehand over wifi for those of us who don’t have cell data.

Excellent tour. Very interesting and I learned so much.

Très enrichissant

App is awful and drains battery

Magnifique moment de mémoires et de respects.

Good tour, but some crucial figures of the Resistance are missing such as Lucie and Raymond Aubrac.

We loved it although my husbands did not work on his phone so we listened to it on mine only.

très sympa!

parcours agréable facile à suivre. récit historique clair et concis.

tres instructif et la visite passe trop rapidemznt ! une version un plus longue aurait ete la biznvenue. sinon super zt avec lappli cela fonctionnz bizn.

This program, for individuals who work or volunteer in cultural institutions, will cover the role of wet salvage of paper-based collections as part of a larger incident response. After an overview of emergency preparation and response protocols, participants will take on incident response roles and run through a mock-flood scenario. In this hands-on program, participants will work in groups to salvage and triage a variety of collection items from a pool, including papers, photographs, and bound materials. A post-scenario debrief gives participants the opportunity to review their actions with workshop instructors. Documentary Heritage and Preservation Services for New York (DHPSNY) Education and Outreach Specialist Liyah Desher and DHPSNY Preservation Specialist Kate Jacus will present.

A Revolution in Type: Gender and the Making of the American Yiddish Press (Webinar)

Tuesday, May 7, 2024 | 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Between the 1880s and 1920s, Yiddish-language newspapers rose from obscurity to become successful institutions integral to American Jewish life. During this period, Yiddish-speaking immigrants came to view newspapers as indispensable parts of their daily lives. For many Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, acclimating to America became inextricably intertwined with becoming a devoted reader of the Yiddish periodical press, as the newspapers and their staffs became a fusion of friends, religious and political authorities, tour guides, matchmakers, and social welfare agencies. In A Revolution in Type, Ayelet Brinn argues that questions related to women and gender were central to the emergence of the Yiddish press as a powerful, influential force in American Jewish culture.

Ayelet Brinn  is an Assistant Professor of Judaic Studies and History at the University of Hartford, where she holds the Philip D. Feltman Professorship in Modern Jewish History. After receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, she held a Rabin-Shvidler Joint Postdoctoral Fellowship in Jewish Studies at Columbia University and Fordham University, the Ivan and Nina Ross Family Fellow, Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies, and was a Scholar in Residence at the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute.

Discovering the Frank Brothers - Freeborn Men of Color, Soldiers of Independence (Webinar)

Wednesday, May 22, 2024 |12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Shirley Green will speak about her recent book, Revolutionary Blacks: Discovering the Frank Brothers, Freeborn Men of Color, Soldiers of Independence (Westholme Publishing; 2023). The narrative follows the lives of William and Benjamin Frank, two brothers who enlisted in the Second Rhode Island Regiment during the American Revolutionary War in the spring of 1777. Their military experiences quickly diverged, and Dr. Green explores their stories to provide context and substance to the Black experience during the war years, as well as underscore the significant distinction between free Blacks in military service and those who had been enslaved, and how they responded in different ways to the harsh realities of racism.

Shirley Green  received her Ph.D. in history from Bowling Green State University after a twenty-six-year career in law enforcement. She is an adjunct professor of history at the University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University. She is currently the Director of the Toledo Police Museum in Toledo, Ohio.

Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps (Webinar)

Thursday, May 30, 2024 |1:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps, 1867-1999 , is a collection that includes maps of over twelve thousand American cities and towns. Sanborn Maps were originally created to evaluate the degree of risk associated with commercial, industrial, and residential structures. Today, Sanborn Maps are often consulted by researchers interested in the characteristics of buildings and how neighborhoods changed over time.

The New York State Library’s subscription database, Digital Sanborn Maps, includes maps specifically for New York State cities and villages for the dates 1867-1970. Stephanie Barrett and Jane Bentley Turo will demonstrate how to navigate this database, as well as share additional resources attendees can use for historical and genealogical research.
