If you dream of returning home with a strong set of google marks, Alpe d’Huez is the resort for you. Thanks to its glorious south facing orientation and 300 days of sunshine a year, ADH is also known as ‘The Island of Sun’.

Alpe d’Huez has an exceptional ski area with race pistes and freestyle set ups to suit all standards. It’s got a wicked variety of steep terrain which makes it a popular spot for freeskiing but it still remains a great place for beginners to learn on the wider nursery slopes.

Run break down: 41 Green / 34 blue / 40 red / 16 black

For the dare devils among you, there are plenty of remote off piste spots with vertical descents and heli drops to deliver you safely back to the resort’s altiport – our personal favourites include the Couloir Fleur and Perrins Bowl.

If that’s still not enough, you can try out the famous ‘Champagne Run’. La Sarenne is the longest black run in the Alps and if you complete all 16km then you can sit and relax at the cafe at the bottom with a well deserved chocolat chaud.

Kicking off at mid-afternoon, La Folie Douce is definitely the best for panoramic views, it already holds legendary status with its DJ’s and live acts.

Another of our favourites is the FreeRide Cafe Bar next to the Ice-rink. Themed as a stock trading floor, all drinks are listed on the TVs and are constantly changing price, if you’re lucky you’ll get one at a market low!

Wasteland Travel Celebrates Their Rebrand With Snowsport Game

  •   17  SEP  2021

wasteland travel ski

Wasteland Travel, a leading Gen-Z ski, travel and events company, has developed an exciting snowsports mobile game that offers students the chance to win a wide range of prizes to celebrate its new brand launch.

The company has rebranded as Wasteland Travel to reflect its youthful and rebellious culture, and having emerged from the global COVID-19 pandemic, Wasteland Travel wanted to use the opportunity of their rebranding to give something back to their audience. To achieve this, the team developed a snowsports mobile game, Wasteland Wipeout, modelled on the cult 90’s hit, Snake.

Every week, students who play Wasteland Wipeout have the opportunity to win lots of great ski-related prizes, including a free ski holiday. There are also larger prizes to be won by the snowsports organisations at the Universities taking part, such as bar tabs and an exclusive all-expenses-paid event night.

The night will be hosted by WE Events, part of the Wasteland Travel group. WE Events bring parties to the mountains and create unique experiences for students on ski holidays. Another area of the Wasteland Travel collective, WhiteRoad, is the trusted winter holiday provider for small groups of friends, families and businesses.

Ru Wood, the CEO of Wasteland Travel, said: “We’re thrilled by the reception we’ve had already to our rebrand to Wasteland Travel, and can't wait to watch as students get their hands on the incredible prizes we have on offer. We’re so excited to see how far our company has come and are ready to keep growing.”

Prior to their rebrand, Wasteland Travel has taken over 250,000 students away on hundreds of ski trips. Ru recalled, “we've been through everything, from clients kicking the walls down between apartments, to giving away cars to students and flying a massive helium blimp through London.”

The company began 27 years ago when their founder, Ted, discovered a skill for organising ski trips for his friends at university. To facilitate growth, Ted partnered with Ru, and a successful partnership was born.

Play Wasteland WipeOut now for the chance to win ski-themed prizes.

Where do I even begin with this disaster of a ski trip? Let's start with the blatant attempt to scam me out of my trip deposit for damages that simply didn't exist. Upon arrival at the accommodation, I was shocked to find the place in a state of disarray. But guess what? None of the mess was caused by me or my group. Yet, when it came time to check out, suddenly there were all these "damages" that apparently we were responsible for. Talk about a classic bait-and-switch tactic. But wait, there's more! Let's talk about the complete lack of organization from start to finish. It's as if they plucked their staff straight out of a chaotic circus act. Our itinerary was a mess, communication was practically non-existent, and don't even get me started on the transportation fiasco. We spent more time waiting around for buses that never showed up than we did actually hitting the slopes. And as for the accommodation they provided, it was a joke. It was like they took one look at our group of university students and thought, "Yeah, let's stick them in this." Not exactly the vibrant nightlife scene they promised us and of course no noise past ten of you are kicked onto the streets... yes this does happen! Overall, this ski company is a textbook example of how not to run a business. They're disorganized, dishonest, and downright incompetent. Save yourself the headache and steer clear of these scammers masquerading as a reputable ski company. Trust me, you'll thank me later. Oh and wondering how they have any 5 star reviews, the good old fashioned "Want to win an amazon voucher worth 50 quid"... yeah jog on Wasteland.

Useless company, don’t use

They’re renowned for being useless at organising anything. Second ski trip with them, the same disappointment I don’t know how there isn’t a rival company for uni ski trips to take over this terrible company.

Another great week with Wasteland Travel

Wasteland Travel smashed it again! This was one of our most enjoyable trips yet, jam packed with great events and fun add-ons. Going to Risoul was an exciting new resort that delivered in so many ways - intimacy, ski area, accommodation, and cost to name a few. The team was fantastically led by Ollie who brought lots of great energy to all our events. Honourable mentions also go to Pip (Philippa), Sarah, and Annie who led the rep team and decor in fantastic fashion. My personal highlight was the rail jam, hosted by Jibworx and supported by Lucas CB, which drew a massive crowd and provided beginners and advanced skiers the opportunity to show off their freestyle tricks. I look forward to working with Wasteland travel again next year to create more memorable trips like these

Beware this horrendous scamming company! Booked a package deal and it was just completely chaotic upon arrival - haven’t gotten my deposit back yet I went on the trip weeks ago! Additionally, opted to rent ski goggles however when I arrived at the resort they never materialised?!!? so I was forced to buy an incredibly expensive pair on site, no apology or compensation from wasteland despite the fact it was due to there incompetence and negligence! Been emailing complaints which was a total waste of time as they just ignore me despite me calling and emailing them multiple times. Absolute appalling!

Stress free trip

The option to get fitted for equipment before the trip made everything a lot quicker and easier. Picking up welcome packages/equipment on arrival ran really smoothly. Accommodation was good for what we paid, but when we got there some items like a spatula was missing and it parts were dirty (food on cutlery). Wasteland reps were always very helpful!

Just a really fun week all round

Just a really fun week all round Apres, skiing lessons and all other events were well organised and fun There were a few issues with things like airport transfers and accomodation keys but it had more to do with policies out of wasteland's control and traffic etc rather than Wasteland themselves

Wasteland ski trip review

All the events that had been organised were amazing and so much fun. Being able to go to the same Apres bars and clubs as everyone was really good , so the schedule was super helpful. Only thing that could be improved would be adding transfers at more times or advertising ways for people to organise their own transfers to the airport if they are flying.

Cardiff x VT 23 Trip

My experience in Val Thorens was excellent. We were greeted in Cardiff by a friendly Wasteland Rep who got us there safely and was well organised. In resort, we had no complaints. There was some slight confusion over collection of keys, however this was quickly resolved when we asked a rep. Our accomodation was just what we needed and the events were wicked. I had some fantastic nights out after some equally as brilliant days skiing. I would definitely use Wasteland Travel again as a reliable, fun ski company.

The company were great on the…

The company were great on the organisation pre the event and was simple to book and pay. However once actually arriving at Val Thorens the organisation seemed to disappear. We didn’t receive bedsheets the first night and had to wait in an 1.5 hour queue for lift passes the following morning despite the fact some people got them on their coaches. Events however were well organised.

Beware the extras & sneaky fees!😡

Falsely advertised as a good value University trip it wasn’t until I’d agreed to go on the bus that I this year realised the pick up point is 140 miles away from the university. With now no other option than to fly I’m slapped with a £30 fee for changing my mind!😡 This is all despite not having actually completed the final booking. Further money is then added to your balance with little options to shop around, for fear of further fees. Absolutely no customer care from the company on a holiday staying in a communal 2* self catering dive of a room (past experience). With all Wastelands extras & fees it is almost as much as a catered chalet. Advice: gather your friends, book something independently, and save a lot of hassle and money!

Wasteland were amazing

Wasteland were amazing! The coach journey was a lot quicker and easier than expected. Very easy to collect everything we had hired, although the ski passes arrived on our first morning (rather than the evening before) and there were large queues to pick it up which was a bit annoying. Amazing snow and apres! Overall the best trip .

Wicked Time at UBSC Fest Val Thorens

Wicked snow in Val Thorens, but the trip was absolutely made by all the extra work put in by everyone organising it! The club nights, the apres and my favourite, the Jibworx RailJam freestyle competition, were all awesome! Accomodation was lovely and the coach journey there was long and tiring but pretty much as easy as it could be, although was a bit hectic organising the coaches on the way back. I didn't hire boots and skis, but I went with a friend to return theirs at the end of the week and that was nice and easy. Wicked stuff guys🤙🏼

Don’t book with wasteland travel.

My recent experience with Wasteland Travel was disappointing. Despite booking an airport transfer service with them, myself and a group of students were left waiting for an excruciating 2 and a half hours beyond the scheduled pickup time. As a result, we missed our flights, causing undue stress and financial strain for every customer involved. What made matters worse was the lack of assistance or guidance from Wasteland Travel staff. Instead of offering support, they proceeded with their own flight, leaving us stranded and scrabbling to find different arrangements on our own. When the transfer finally arrived, the driver was using his phone while driving and took us on a 20 minute detour. The lack of responsibility and empathy from wasteland was appalling. It’s disappointing to see a company handle situations in such a neglectful manner with no regard for the well being of customers. I advise against entrusting wasteland with any travel arrangements whatsoever. I have been disappointed by them before and continually so. Their customer service and manner of handling situations is completely unacceptable.

Most enjoyable ski trip I’ve ever been on

The events organised by the company were incredible. There were always multiple places to go from the afternoon until the early morning the next day. Everyone that went enjoyed the trip thoroughly and the reps were very helpful in assisting about any questions we had. The best ski holiday I have ever been on.

Solid, Reliable Travel company for Affordable Ski Holidays

Everything was pretty good- the Wasteland reps were really nice and helpful, everything was well organized with lots of fun organized and available to take part in. The pre-fitted waiver also saved a lot of hassle once at the resort. However, only given 4 stars because Wasteland weren't all that useful in helping out when my skis were stolen on the slopes.

Would recommend! The most fun you can have with snow!

Incredibly friendly WLT staff. Mountains were enjoyable and there was a large range of runs. The beginner snowboarding lessons were taught very well and all of the rental gear fit perfectly. I exchanged my board halfway through the trip due to damages and the staff in the rental shop were very accommodating.

Great experience

The customer service was great. The staff at Wasteland Travel were always friendly and helpful, both in person and over the phone. They answered all of my questions promptly and made sure I had everything I needed for the trip. The skiing was amazing. We went to some beautiful and challenging slopes. The accommodation was also great fun. Overall, I would highly recommend Wasteland Travel to anyone looking for a fantastic skiing trip. They really went above and beyond to make sure we had a memorable and enjoyable experience.

Wasteland UBSC 2023

Great resort selection- Val Thorens has so much skiing as well as good apres. Wasteland coaches to and from Geneva ran on time and easy to find. Lots of events scheduled throughout the week and they gave good comms on social media re timings and location. Shame the arena was indoors though.

A very professional experience

Anywhere they said we could get discounted drinks, we could get them. Effortless ski collection and return. Events were class. Text reminders of what was going on that day were super helpful. Not a bad word about the experience.

Great trip, just a few issues with travel

I really enjoyed the trip and the reason it doesn’t get 5/5 is because the journey organisation there and back wasn’t done too well. Collecting our room keys and ski passes also took a couple hours and I felt the organisation of this could’ve been better. The numbers on buses were messed up and this meant that we were left waiting sometimes and unsure who would be on the bus. Also the checkout times were unclear which made it difficult to understand when we needed to checkout. I overall the trip was amazing and I would definitely go again there are just a few organisational things I think needed to be improved.

  • Guide to Russia

What is the history of Gorky Park?

  • In the pre-revolutionary period, Gorky Park was a city dump and wasteland, which was cleared in 1923 to host the All-Russian Agricultural and Artisan Industrial Exhibition
  • In 1928, a huge park was planned on the former site of the exhibition. It would not just be a place of leisure, but a place to proudly display Soviet culture and daily life
  • Gorky Park has remained a cultural hub ever since, and has been renovated and added to over the years to make it one of Moscow’s top attractions today

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

Gorky Park is the most famous park of Moscow, created during the Soviet period as a hub for relaxation and cultural activities. The park is beloved by Muscovites and tourists alike, who visit in all seasons to stroll, enjoy sports, admire the park’s attractions, and attend cultural events. Gorky Park is the central part of an ensemble of four green spaces – Muzeon Park of Arts, Neskuchny Garden, and Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve – which curve around the southern bank of the Moskva River to the south-west of Moscow city centre. Here you may spend some time and enjoy nature and contemprary art during your vacation in Moscow .

History of Gorky Park

Imperial russia.

In the 17th century, the eastern bank of the Moskva River beyond Moscow’s city limits was home to floodplain meadows, where palace horses grazed. From the mid-1850s, events such as cockfights, fistfights, and races were held here, and by the 20th century this area had become a city dump where the unemployed and homeless people of Moscow lived, which remained this way until the Soviet period. This wasteland lay in stark contrast to the adjoining Neskuchny Sad – ‘merry garden’ – which lay to its south, an area of aristocratic country estates and elaborate gardens.

Soviet Russia

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

Following the October Revolution, Vladimir Lenin travelled around Moscow to find a suitable site for the first All-Russian Agricultural and Artisan Industrial Exhibition, which would reveal opportunities for socialist development of agriculture and industry. Lenin decided on the wasteland alongside the Moskva River, which was cleared with a programme of community work. In 1923, the exhibition began. It encompassed 250 pavilions dedicated to different themes of agriculture and industry, and was divided into thematic zones, such as villages, livestock, crops, engineering, railways, republics of the USSR, and foreign countries. The organisation of the exhibition demarcated the future layout and size of Gorky Park, and the paths, ‘zones’, and main square of the exhibition have been preserved until the present day. In March 1928, Moscow City Council decided to establish a park of culture and recreation on the site of the former exhibition, which would also encompass the Neskuchny Garden. Moscow’s residents were instrumental in the construction of the park – they voiced their desires for events spaces, physical education and leisure facilities, and gave up their weekends to build the park. The park’s main architect was Konstantin Melnikov.

Did you know? Konstantin Melnikov also helped to construct Lenin’s Mausoleum and the Rusakov Worker’s Club, one of Moscow’s Constructivist masterpieces .

Over 100,000 Muscovites flocked to the opening of the park on 12th August 1928. The brand-new park was equipped with two theatres, a cinema, nursery, reading room, restaurant and café, music stages, sports arenas, rowing boats, and even a giant helter-skelter slide. Unfortunately, because of the vast size of the crowd and the general excitement, the park was damaged and closed until September.

Did you know? The park was not named after Maxim Gorky, writer and founder of Socialist Realism, until 1933.

In 1929, Betty Glan – at the mere age of 26 – became director of the park. She decided to reconceptualise it, uniting leisure, design, and ideology with the help of Moscow’s most eminent architects, designers and artists. Over the next decade, more cultural venues were established in the park, the Pushkinskaya Embankment along the Moskva River was developed, and the landscaping of the park was carefully cultivated. Architect Alexander Vlasov was particularly influential, and won the Grand Prix at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris for his design of Gorky Park. This period under Glan’s directorship until 1937 was known as the ‘golden age’ of Gorky Park, which became not just a place for recreation, but a public space where Soviet culture and everyday life could be proudly displayed.

Did you know? During the Second World War topical events were held in Gorky Park, such as the championship in bayonet combat, grenade-throwing competitions, and air defence training. What’s more, an exhibition of captured enemy weapons – tanks, artillery, aeroplanes, and more – was organised in Gorky Park and continually updated throughout the war.

In the post-war decades new attractions were continually added to Gorky Park. These included the majestic 24-metre triumphal arch at the entrance to the park, an astronomical observatory (which remains open today), the famous Ferris wheel (unfortunately dismantled in 2008), and a fountain with lights and music.

Russia today

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

The Gorky Park ensemble continued to flourish as a centre of culture and recreation in post-Soviet Russia. The adjoining Muzeon Park of Arts was founded in 1992, and Garage Museum of Contemporary Art was established in Gorky Park in 2008. The ensemble underwent serious reconstruction in 2011. Many new sports facilities were added, including centres for beach sports and extreme sports, bicycle paths and sports equipment rental hubs, and much effort was devoted to reviving original buildings, sculptures, and landscape compositions. Two years later, the embankment of the Moskva River from the southern tip of Zamoskvorechye Island all the way to Sparrow Hills was redeveloped and pedestrianised, making it possible to peacefully walk or cycle along the Moskva for many kilometres.

What can you do at Gorky Park today?

  • Explore the park and see architectural attractions, fountains, and beautiful gardens
  • Visit Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and the Gorky Park Museum
  • Go boating on the lakes and stroll down the Pushkinskaya Embankment
  • Rent bicycles or scooters, skateboard, and visit the sports centres

What can you do at Gorky Park?

Park attractions.

While exploring the treelined paths of Gorky Park, you’ll come across a number of attractions. To the west of the main entrance, near the river, is a beautiful geometric bandstand used for music and literary evenings in the Soviet period. As you head down the central alley of Gorky Park from the main entrance, you’ll see a statue of Maxim Gorky on your right, and discover the light and music fountain with its dancing jets of water – find the schedule of its performances here .

Did you know? Don’t be afraid to feed the red squirrels and birds you encounter on your walk around Gorky Park – there are even vending machines which sell special food for the animals!

The southern section of Gorky Park is occupied by the Golitsynsky Garden. In 1802, the Golitsyn Hospital was founded here as a hospital for the poor; it still adjoins Gorky Park today. Gardens were created as a relaxation place for patients, extending from the hospital building to the riverbank, and included landscaped gardens, a Chinese Bridge, and two ponds. On the riverbank is the Rotunda of the Golitsyn Hospital, which has been preserved since the 19th century. There is also a rose garden and fountain by the Bolshoi Golitsynsky Pond.

Did you know? In the Golitsynsky Garden is also located an unusual architectural monument – a public toilet designed by Alexander Vlasov in the 1930s, which is recognised as an ‘object of cultural heritage’!

Outdoor activities

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

Gorky Park’s extensive and varied grounds aren’t only good for walks! You can relax on the water by renting boats to sail on the Pionersky and Bolshoi Golitsynsky Ponds, or visiting the Olivkovy Beach on the Pushkinskaya Embankment to sunbathe. As well as this, you can hire bicycles, electric scooters, longboards or even roller skates to explore the park and embankments, play table tennis, visit the sports complex to play football, basketball, handball, badminton or volleyball, or visit the Vans skatepark or Nike sports centre for workouts and classes such as rooftop yoga.

Visit the Gorky Park Museum, located in the left pier of the entrance arch. The current exhibition is dedicated to Gorky Park in the ‘golden age’ of the 1930s, and shows the development of Moscow’s central park through the eyes of Betty Glan. There is an observation deck on top of the arch, which offers a lovely view over the park and Moscow’s skyline.

Did you know? In the entrance arch there is also a gift shop where you can purchase balls, frisbees, blankets, and other items to enjoy your visit to Gorky Park.

Food and drink

There are plenty of excellent cafes and restaurants dotted around Gorky Park, where you can stop for a quick coffee or enjoy a long meal with a view. They include the stylish lakeside café Ostrovok (Little Island) and upmarket restaurant Vremena Goda (Seasons) which serve European and Russian food, colourful lakeside Thai restaurant Lebedinoe Ozero (Swan Lake), trattoria Merkato with its huge summer terrace, restaurant Syrovarnya (Cheese Factory) with a menu focused on its homemade cheese, food-truck court Restoparking which is stylised as a drive-in café, and ice-cream and tea shop Chaynaya Vysota.

What’s nearby?

Gorky Park is bordered by Muzeon Park of Arts, Neskuchny Garden, and Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve. This huge ensemble curves for eight kilometres along the bank of the Moskva River, providing a beautiful oasis of green in Europe’s biggest city.

Muzeon Park of Arts

Muzeon Park

Photo from  https://new-magazine.ru/

Muzeon Park of Arts is the largest open-air sculpture museum in Russia, home to 1,000 sculptures by Soviet and Russian sculptors, including those by famous artists. A large part of Muzeon is occupied by the New Tretyakov Gallery , which houses Russia’s most complete exhibition of national art from the 20th century to the present day. The pedestrianised Krymskaya Embankment which extends alongside Muzeon has recently undergone redevelopment, and is one of Moscow’s most popular spots to relax.

Neskuchny Garden

Neskuchny Garden is the oldest park in Moscow, founded in 1728 by Prince Nikita Trubetskoy, who threw fantastic festivities in his manor house and gardens – neskuchny means ‘merry’ in Russian. Many other noble families also built their country estates in this area, which became a public park and garden after being acquired by the royal family. Today, the Neskuchny Garden is home to historical buildings, fountains, and gardens from the 18th and 19th centuries, sports facilities, an open-air theatre, and a huge greenhouse which supplies flowers to Gorky Park.

Sparrow Hills

Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve is a huge forest park lining the steep bank of the Moskva River and the only specially protected nature area near the city centre. It is home to ecological trails, ponds, natural springs, rare species of plants and animals, many spots for picnicking, cafes, and a mini zoo. At the bottom of the park lie the Vorobyovskaya and Andreevskaya Embankments, with promenades along the Moskva River, a beach, and piers offering boat trips. As with Gorky Park, Sparrow Hills is hugely popular for sports and outdoor activities in all seasons. A new winter sports complex with snowboarding, ice skating, and ski tracks and jumps is currently under construction. When the weather is pleasant, you can rent a bicycle to ride the 8 kilometres along the river from Muzeon to Sparrow Hills.
