The Wave Tour - hike the 6-8 miles of Coyote Buttes North and the Wave

  • Trip Details

Private Tour Upgrade Available?

Tour length, departure times, difficulty (1-10), recommended abilities, attractions, special interests, these faqs are specific to this tour. if you would like to view our general faqs click here ..

1. How difficult is the hike to the Wave? The round-trip hike is just over 6 miles (9.5 kilometers) if you take the most direct route to the Wave and back. Our tours typically cover about 8 miles so we can visit other spectacular sites. There are long stretches of deep sand to trudge through and an elevation gain of about 500 feet on the trek. There are a few steep inclines, loose footing, and often you will be hiking on uneven sandstone with one foot higher than the other while you hug the side of a steep sandstone ridge. Decent cardio fitness, leg strength, some amount of endurance and good balance are needed. Harsh weather is another factor to consider. This is a particularly windy spot that makes the winter chill even colder. Ice and snow make the uneven hike quite slippery. In the summer, the sun is relentless, heating the ground until the radiant heat rises from the earth while the sun shines from above. There is virtually no shade.

2. How do I get a Wave permit? In March of 2021 the BLM radically increased the number of permits issued to 64 permits for 64 people, or 16 groups, whichever comes first. 48 of those permits, or 12 groups, whichever comes first, are issued via an online lottery 3-4 months in advance.  Only 16 permits for 16 people, or permits for 4 groups, whichever comes first, are issued the day before at the walk-in lottery. All of the specifics of the permit process are explained HERE .

3. Can I book a Wave tour without a permit? Yes, you can book book a Wave tour with us even if you do not have a North Coyote Buttes permit. Our booking system will ask whether you have a permit; simply answer, “no.” We will enter the in-person lottery on your behalf the day before your trip to try to get you a permit. The odds of winning are less than 10%. If we don’t score a Wave permit, your tour will visit one of two alternates: South Coyote Buttes or White Pocket.  South Coyote Buttes also requires a permit though it tends to be much easier to get than the Wave, but if we aren’t able to secure a South Coyote Buttes permits, your trip will visit White Pocket. All three are world class hiking and photography destinations in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument.

4. I am staying in Page. Where can we meet? We offer pick-up service to any hotel, vacation rental or RV Park in Kanab, Utah, but we do not pick up in Page, Arizona. If you are staying in Page, we can arrange a meeting point halfway between Page and Kanab. Normally, this meeting point is at the intersection of Highway 89 and Houserock Valley Road, which is about 45 minutes west of Page, and is right on the way to the Wave.  If you book an 8 a.m. tour, that is the time the tour departs Kanab, Utah. We would leave at 8 a.m. and meet you at 8:45 a.m. at Houserock Valley Road. Keep in mind that Page is in Arizona, which does not observe daylight savings time. So, from spring through fall, the time in Arizona is one hour earlier than in Utah, where our company operates. So, if our tour left Kanab at 8 a.m. (Utah time) and met you at 8:45 a.m. (Utah time), this would be 7:45 a.m. Arizona time and you would need to leave Page by 7am.  Daylight savings time starts sometime in mid-March and usually runs to the middle of November.

5. Is there a bathroom at the Wave? There is a pit toilet at the trailhead to the Wave. Otherwise, there are no facilities in the wilderness area. While hiking to and from the Wave, you may duck behind a tree or bush for privacy whenever necessary. All solid waste should be packed out and our guides carry WAG bags for this purpose, as well as toilet paper, hand wipes and plastic bags. Do not leave any trash on the ground. This is a wilderness area and must be kept pristine. Paper must be bagged up and can be discreetly discarded into the trash bag at the truck.

6. Are drones allowed at North Coyote Buttes? No. North Coyote Buttes is a designated wilderness area and drones are illegal.

Guest Experiences on the Wave Tour

croderique – June 8, 2019 TripAdvisor We had a great guide, Rich. Not only did we see The Wave, but he showed several other areas we would not have even known to see. We strongly recommend using a guide service, and Dreamland is a good choice.

Seaside39985049827 – June 5, 2019 TripAdvisor We were a 4 people group (my friend and I and a couple). Steve was great at evaluating our speed and skills and adjusting accordingly. He took us through some “short cuts” were we were able to see dinosaur footprints, balanced well our time at the wave and other parts of the hike, was happy to add on wirepass into the hike, and did a good job of making sure we were all having fun and enjoying the adventure. He was fun, knowledgeable and very flexible. Great guide for a hike of a lifetime!

c0rintians – June 5, 2019 TripAdvisor We had an amazing time with Steve at the Wave. He was very knowledgeable and showed us areas of the Wave we didn’t even know about. We absolutely recommend Dreamland and Steve to anyone!

emilybeis – May 28, 2019 TripAdvisor Dreamland Safari Tours is simply excellent in all aspects. They entered the lottery for The Wave on our behalf, informed us promptly after we were lucky enough to win the lottery, and provided an unforgettable guided tour the next day. The Tour Leader, Steve, knows The Wave inside out. He was patient and courteous. He walked with us at our pace, allowing us ample time for enjoying the beauty of various scenic spots and taking photos. I would also like to mention that the sandwich provided for lunch was of very high quality. We enjoyed the tour so much.

Get the most of your Wave experience! If you are lucky enough to get your paws on a permit to hike the 6-8 miles of Coyote Buttes North and the Wave, consider The Wave Tour guided by Dreamland Safari Tours.

White Pocket Photo

Until a few decades ago only a handful of people knew about the Wave in North Coyote Buttes of the Paria Canyon Wilderness on the border of Utah and Arizona. Today there is a lottery to determine who gets in. Phenomenon is the word. Nothing else does it justice.

The undulating strata and spectrum of colors found in the sandstone walls of the Wave date back to the Great Pangean Desert of the Jurassic Period about 160-180 million years ago. Wind and water erosion carves, smooths, and reveals the layers of sand left here in great dunes and then compacted and mineralized (colors) into stone. While the Wave is a smooth, polished bowl of striped wind-swept sandstone, the same exotic rock is displayed in numerous forms, shapes, colors, and patterns throughout the guided hike to the Wave in North Coyote Buttes.

With the Wave Tour you get all of the following:

  • Comfortable, safe, year-round, high clearance, 4×4 transportation for up to 6 passengers on rough, unpredictable House Rock Valley Road
  • A homemade picnic lunch.
  • Knowledgeable tidbits about the geology, ecology, and history of the area. Guided Hiking through the easiest and most scenic routes to the neatest alternate and subtle Points of Interest including Dinosaur Tracks, Fatali’s boneyard (Lace Rocks), Sand Cove, Second Wave, Cheeseburger Rock, and other bizarre and colorful rock formations. These are areas the unguided rarely see. We do not typically go up to Top Rock or Top Arch due to time & difficulty of the ascent. We may make exceptions for very fit groups.
  • Guided photography and tips at dozens of locations.
  • Personal Safety – We help prepare you, keep you on track, and make sure you are safe in the Paria Canyon Wilderness. Our guides have basic Medical Training and satellite communications in case of emergency.

Elevation change, uneven footing, and sand across a long distance (typically 7-10 miles!) make the terrain on The Wave Tour difficult.  Please be prepared for hiking in difficult conditions. Daypacks are necessary especially in summer when our guide alone cannot carry enough water for everyone to safely complete the hike. Boots are highly recommended. Please carefully consider your age and physical abilities especially during the hottest months of the year: June, July, August. This tour is especially difficult in the heat.

SPECIAL PERMITS ARE REQUIRED FOR THE WAVE TOUR AT NORTH COYOTE BUTTES. DREAMLAND DOES NOT PROVIDE ADVANCE PERMITS OR HAVE AN UMBRELLA PERMIT.  ONLY OUR GUIDES ARE COVERED BY OUR PERMIT. WHEN OBTAINING PERMITS ONE DOES NOT HAVE TO ADD OUR GUIDES TO THE TOTAL NUMBER. UPON REQUEST, AND WITH AN ALTERNATE TOUR PLANNED, DREAMLAND MAY BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LAST MINUTE LOTTERY IN YOUR STEAD. PERMITS ARE NEVER GUARANTEED.

Wave Permits are not easy to get, but odds can vary at different times of year. St. pete's rod wave goes from gangs to no. 1 album in u.s., singer and songwriter rod wave, who is a 2017 graduate of lakewood high school, has made it to no. 1 for the first time on billboard 200..

Skyla Luckey , Patch Staff

Singer and songwriter Rod Wave, who is a 2017 graduate of Lakewood High School, has made it to No. 1 for the first time on Billboard 200.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Singer, songwriter and rapper Rod Wave, who is a 2017 graduate of Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg, has the No. 1 music album in the country, according to Billboard 200.

The South St. Pete native — whose birth name is Rodarius Marcell Green — turned his life around when he started chasing his musical dreams.

The 21-year-old singer's new album, "SoulFly" pushed Justin Bieber's album, "Justice," to No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart dated for April 10. "SoulFly" also made it to No. 1 on the "Rolling Stone Artists 500" during the week of March 26 to April 1.

Find out what's happening in St. Pete with free, real-time updates from Patch.

Billboard also reported the song "Tombstone" from the new album had the biggest streaming gain. The Hot 100 showed "Tombstone" climbed from No. 82 to No. 11 for the week of April 10. Other songs from the album on The Hot 100 include "What's Love," "All I Got," "SoulFly," and "Gone Till November."

Green said in an interview with The Breakfast Club podcast on the day his album released that his dad inspired him to go after his dreams of rapping after he got out of prison. He said his father, who he refers to as "pops," went to prison for attempted murder when he was in elementary school. When his dad returned home, he saw that his son was involved in illegal activities such as armed burglary.

The rapper credits his father for helping him change directions with his life after he told him that he was either going to end up in prison or dead. Green didn't immediately change his ways. He was arrested his senior year for bringing a pellet gun to Lakewood High School, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office arrest records.

While his mom, aunts and grandmothers did their best to raise him, Green said the absence of a male figure didn't keep him out of trouble.

"They tried a lot of (expletive), but I was still persuaded by others," he told the podcast. "A boy needs a man there, and that's why I got into a real gang when I was older. When my daddy came home, he was like, 'Bro, you breaking in houses? That's what crackheads do. You supposed to be out here hustlin', at least I'd respect that. You out here breaking in people's houses and that (expletive) is lame.'"

The lyrics of his songs are about his life experiences, pain, losing loved ones to violence on the south side, making it out of St. Pete, challenges he faces with social anxiety and not enjoying being the center of attention. Music is his safe place, so Green steps out of his comfort zone of not being seen. He is staying humble being loyal to his roots as he worked with a local video production company, Litewave Media , for his recent projects.

"Working with Rod was an incredible experience," Christian Cashmir, owner of Litewave Media told Patch. "He's just got raw, natural talent, and he's also a very genuine person. It's really cool to work with an artist who also hails from St. Petersburg, Florida, like us!"

Howard Jones, ABC and Haircut 100 Team Up for New Wave Extravaganza North American Tour

A new wave one-stop shop will tour North America this summer when Howard Jones and ABC will be hitting stages across North America with special guest Haircut 100. The full itinerary appears below.

"I'm very excited to be hitting the road with my friends ABC and Haircut 100," Jones enthused. "Our audiences can look forward to some seriously top tunes night after night!  Bring your celebratory selves to the party."

ABC frontman Martin Fry stated, "ABC in the USA. Very excited to hit the road alongside Howard Jones and Haircut 100 for an electrifying summer tour across the USA! Get ready for an unforgettable musical journey as we bring the hits to stages nationwide. Let’s make memories and rock the house together!”

Haircut 100's Nick Heyward added, "Ever since our last tour in 1982 we've been pining to play in North America again, so this is a dream come true for us. Come down early and get your dancing shoes on, because there's a lot of catching up to do."

Of course, the evening will play out like an evening filled with hits from the early days of MTV, when the so-called "Second British Invasion" dominated the channel. Jones' hits "New Song" and "What Is Love," and "Things Can Only Get Better" probably segued into or out of ABC's "Look of Love," "Poison Arrow" and "Be Near Me" and Haircut 100's "Love Plus One" and "Fantastic Day."

All three acts have gone on to other successes, but this tour brings together the songs and sounds that first brought them to fame.

U.S. surfer accompanied by dolphins as she wins world championship event in Australia

Hawaiian surfer Gabriela Bryan shared a wave with a pod of dolphins as she won her first world championship tour event over Californian rookie Sawyer Lindblad in pumping surf at the Western Australia Margaret River Pro on Sunday.

Margaret River local Jack Robinson took out a spectacular men’s final against Hawaii’s two-time world champion John John Florence in a replay of their 2022 final of the same event.

Robinson and Florence were the two form surfers of the event and traded huge carves on the double-overhead walls as the waves finally improved on last day of the 11-day competition window.

The decisive moment came midway through the final when Robinson scored an excellent 9.10 out of 10 for two giant turns on the biggest wave of the day and followed it up with a lofty frontside air on the very next wave for an 8.17.

Florence kept battling and scored an excellent wave of his own but could not reel in the Western Australian, who finished with 17.27 out of 20 to Florence’s 16.04.

“That was the final I wanted, I wanted to throw everything at it. It’s always fun surfing against John — we’re going to have many more heats together,” said Robinson, who missed the event last year due to injury.

The world tour next heads to the thumping tubes of Teahupo’o in Tahiti, where both Robinson and Florence will be among the favourites battling for Olympic gold in just a few months time.

Florence earlier scored the only perfect 10 of the event in his semi-final against Australian wildcard George Pittar, blowing his tail out and holding onto his board with the toenails of one foot before recovering for a couple more turns.

Western Australia Margaret River Pro

Both Bryan, 22, and 18-year-old Lindblad had to go deep at Margaret River to avoid the mid-season cut and secure their place for the remainder of the 2024 tour.

Lindblad went into the final in top form, having dispatched two-time world champion Tyler Wright in their semi-final to secure her place above the cut line.

Bryan took a commanding lead with a 7.83 for two powerful turns on her forehand as a handful of dolphins swooped around her.

“When I kicked out, I was just wow! That wave was sent to me by someone, the dolphins in it. It was magical,” said Bryan, who scored an even better 8.10 on her second scoring ride.

“I’m just so happy we got good waves today and all the girls put on a really good show. It’s insane, I just won!”

Both the men’s and women’s field will now be cut for the final four events of the world tour, with 11-time world champion  Kelly Slater  and Australian veteran Sally Fitzgibbons among those missing out.

Neil Young Stuns at 2024 Tour Launch, Unveils Lost ‘Cortez the Killer’ Verse

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

In typical Neil Young fashion, virtually nothing was revealed about his 2024 U.S. tour before it kicked off Wednesday night at San Diego’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre, other than the fact he’d be backed by Crazy Horse , and that Micah Nelson would be taking over guitar duties from Nils Lofgren. Would he pull a Greendale and debut an entire rock opera nobody had ever heard? Would he focus the set around the three new studio albums he cut with Crazy Horse between 2019 and 2022? Might he repeat the concept of his 2023 solo tour by spotlighting obscure Eighties and Nineties album tracks and skipping most of his hits?

They jammed for six minutes before Young sang the opening lines, igniting the crowd into a frenzy, but the big moment came near the end, when he began singing completely unfamiliar words. As he teased earlier this month , it was the legendary lost segment of the song that failed to record during the 1975 Zuma sessions because the console briefly lost power. Young recently found the lyric manuscript, and worked out where they originally fit in the song.

“I floated on the water,” Young sang. “I ate that ocean wave/Two weeks after the slaughter/I was living in a cave/They came too late to get me/But there’s no one here to set me free/From this rocky grave/To that snowed-out ocean wave.”

It was a remarkable moment to witness. After 49 years and over 540 live performances, the world finally got to hear the song as Young originally wrote it.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Young was talking about “Scattered (Let’s Think About Livin’),” from 1996’s Broken Arrow, which was the newest song they played all evening. The rest of the set was music recorded when Briggs was alive, largely between 1969 and 1979, beginning with “Don’t Cry No Tears.” He followed it up with a triple shot of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere : “Down by the River,” “The Losing End,” and the title track. And it was a particularly mesmerizing “Down by the River” that stretched out for 16 blissful minutes.

After the Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere mini-set, the quartet (Crazy Horse 4.0?) kicked into one of the greatest renditions of “Powderfinger” I’ve ever heard, thanks to improvisational guitar work prior to each verse by Young and Nelson. What came next was a 16-minute “Love and Only Love,” the band walking offstage, and then Young strapping on an harmonica rack for solo acoustic renditions of “Comes a Time,” “Heart of Gold,” and “Human Highway” that had the entire amphitheater singing along.

The band returned to wrap up the night with “Don’t Be Denied,” an autobiographical tale that carries a lot more emotional weight when Young sings it at age 78 as opposed to 28, and a thrashed-out “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black).”

He might duplicate this exact set when the tour continues the following night at the same venue. He might not repeat a single song. He may even perform a complete classic album, which is something he started doing late last year. The joy of seeing Neil Young is that you never have any idea what’s going to happen once the lights dim.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artists or other musical figures who will be inducted in 2024. It’s a diverse list that stretches from R&B/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton to pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, and from ’70s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner and Ozzy Osbourne to ’90s icons the Dave Matthews Band , Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest.

That honorary category is also the side door through which the committee installed two other performers who had been nominated before without ever being selected by voters: Warwick and MC5. The latter group had been nominated six times without ever being voted in (only Chic had been nominated more times and remained shut out); with the “musical excellence” classification, the Rock Hall finally took matters into its own hands in installing the influential 1960s quintet.

For the first time, the inductees were announced as part of an “American Idol” broadcast, during a Sunday night episode themed around the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Following is the complete list of inductees for 2024:

Performer Category:

  • Mary J. Blige
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Peter Frampton
  • Kool & The Gang
  • Ozzy Osbourne
  • A Tribe Called Quest

Musical Influence Award:

  • Alexis Korner
  • John Mayall
  • Big Mama Thornton

Musical Excellence Award:

  • Jimmy Buffett
  • Dionne Warwick
  • Norman Whitfield

Ahmet Ertegun Award :

  • Suzanne de Passe

The eight “performer” inductees are the ones selected by a ballot sent out to the Hall’s voters after the 15 nominees were announced on Feb. 10.

That leaves seven nominees from this year who will have to wait for another crack at getting in: Mariah Carey, Jane’s Addiction, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz and the duo Eric B. and Rakim.

One question mark now is how Cher will react to her induction. Just last December, in an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” she said, “You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” At that point, though, she had never received so much as a nomination, so the odds favor her changing her tune on that vow, now that she got voted in her first time actually appearing on the ballot.

Five out of the eight voted in this year were first-time nominees: Osbourne, Cher, Frampton, Foreigner and Kool & the Gang.

A Tribe Called Quest got in on the hip-hop collective’s third time on the ballot (and their third year in a row being nominated). Blige and Matthews both got in on their second try (she was previously up for it in 2021; DMB had a prior nod in 2020).

Frampton, for his part, beyond the merits of having had one of the biggest albums of all time, may be a sentimental favorite this year, due to his being in the acknowledged twilight of his musical career. He has been out on a farewell tour off and on since 2019, following his diagnosis with the debilitating disease inclusion body myositis in 2015. The rocker just wrapped up the last round of dates he had scheduled, although he has not said there won’t be more.

Osbourne becomes a second-time inductee this year; his group Black Sabbath was voted in all the way back in 2006. Sometimes there is contention over whether singers who are already in the Hall of Fame, as group members, really need to be pushed to the front of the line as solo artists, too, ahead of other contenders. In any case, voters decided that Osbourne’s post-Sabbath career established him as one of rock’s major icons, even apart from his initial round of influence and success as a frontman.

De Passe is getting her flowers for a career that included a long stint as one of the major players at Motown, developing the Jackson 5 into superstars and signing the Commodores, among other triumphs, before becoming a film and TV executive. She was profiled by Variety about her long and wide-ranging career in 2022.

Motown is also being celebrated with the induction of Whitfield, a songwriter and producer whose astonishing catalog of hits in the ’60s and ’70s included “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “War,” “Ball of Confusion,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “I Can’t Get Next to You” and “Car Wash.” He died in 2008.

Coming on under the “musical influences” umbrella, Alexis Korner may be the name among this year’s inductees that is least known to contemporary music fans. He was a major player in the British blues scene of the 1960s and became a popular broadcaster as well; he died in 1984 at age 55. With John Mayall also being selected by the committee for the same honor, it’s an unexpected banner year for British blues-rockers.

ROSARIO, Argentina (AP) — The order to kill came from inside a federal prison near Argentina’s capital. Unwitting authorities patched a call from drug traffickers tied to one of the country’s most notorious gangs to collaborators on the outside. Hiring a 15-year-old hit man, they sealed the fate of a young father they didn’t even know.

At a service station on March 9 in Rosario, the picturesque hometown of soccer star Lionel Messi, 25-year-old employee Bruno Bussanich was whistling to himself and checking the day’s earnings just before he was shot three times from less than a foot away, surveillance footage shows. The assailant fled without taking a peso.

It was the fourth gang-related fatal shooting in Rosario in almost as many days. Authorities called it an unprecedented rampage in Argentina, which had never witnessed the extremes of drug cartel violence afflicting some other Latin American countries.

A handwritten letter was found near Bussanich’s body, addressed to officials who want to curb the power drug kingpins wield from behind bars. “We don’t want to negotiate anything. We want our rights,” it says. “We will kill more innocent people.”

Shaken residents interviewed by The Associated Press across Rosario described a sense of dread taking hold.

“Every time I go to work, I say goodbye to my father as if it were the last time,” said 21-year-old Celeste Núñez, who also works at a gas station.

The string of killings offer an early test to the security agenda of populist President Javier Milei, who has tethered his political success to saving Argentina’s tanking economy and eradicating narco-trafficking violence.

Since taking office Dec. 10, the right-wing leader has promised to prosecute gang members as terrorists and change the law to allow the army into crime-ridden streets for the first time since Argentina’s brutal military dictatorship ended in 1983.

His law-and-order message has empowered the hardline governor of Santa Fe province, which includes Rosario, to clamp down on incarcerated criminal gangs that authorities say orchestrated 80% of shootings last year. Under the orders of Governor Maximiliano Pullaro, police have ramped up prison raids, seized thousands of smuggled cellphones and restricted visits.

“We are facing a group of narco-terrorists desperate to maintain power and impunity,” Milei said after Bussanich was killed, announcing the deployment of federal forces in Rosario. “We will lock them up, isolate them, take back the streets.”

Milei won 56% of the vote in Rosario, where residents praise his focus on a problem largely neglected by his predecessors. But some worry the government’s combative approach traps them in the line of fire.

Gangs started their deadly retaliations just hours after Pullaro’s security minister shared photos showing Argentine prisoners crammed together on the floor, heads pressed against each other’s bare backs — a scene reminiscent of El Salvador President Nayib Bukele’s harsh anti-gang crackdown.

“It’s a war between the state and the drug traffickers,” said Ezequiel, a 30-year-old employee at the gas station where Bussanich was killed. Ezequiel, who gave only his first name for fear of reprisals, said his mother has since begged him to quit. “We’re the ones paying the price.”

Even Milei’s supporters have mixed feelings about the crackdown, including Germán Bussanich, the father of the slain gas station worker.

“They’re putting on a show and we’re facing the consequences,” Bussanich told reporters.

A leafy city 300 kilometers (180 miles) northwest of Buenos Aires, Rosario is where revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara was born, Messi first kicked a soccer ball and the Argentine flag was first raised in 1812. But it most recently won notoriety because its homicide numbers are five times the national average.

Tucked into a bend in the Paraná River, Rosario’s port morphed into Argentina’s drug trafficking hub as regional crackdowns pushed the narcotics trade south and criminals started squirreling away cocaine in shipping containers spirited down the river to markets abroad. Although Rosario never suffered the car bombs and police assassinations gripping Mexico , Colombia and most recently Ecuador , the splintering of street gangs has fueled bloodshed.

“It’s not close to the violence in Mexico because we still have the deterrence capacity of the government in Argentina,” said Marcelo Bergman, a social scientist at the National University of Tres de Febrero in Argentina. “But we need to keep an eye on Rosario because the major threats come not so much from big cartels but when these groups proliferate and diversify.”

Drug traffickers keep a tight grip over Rosario’s poor neighborhoods full of young men vulnerable to recruitment. One of them was Víctor Emanuel, a 17-year-old killed two years ago by rival gangsters in an area where street murals pay tribute to slain criminal leaders. No one was arrested.

“My neighbors know who’s responsible,” his mother, Gerónima Benítez, told the AP, her eyes shiny with tears. “I looked for help everywhere, I knocked on the doors of the judiciary, the government. No one answered.”

Geronima Benitez wipes her eyes as she speaks about her son Victor Emanuel, 17, who was murdered by drug traffickers who were never arrested two years ago, during an interview at her home in Rosario, Argentina, Tuesday, April 9, 2024. A fearful existence is all Benítez has ever known. But now, for the first time in Argentina, warring drug traffickers are banding together and terrorizing parts of the city previously considered safe.

Imprisoned gang leaders in Latin America have long run criminal enterprises remotely with the help of corrupt guards. But according to an indictment unveiled last week , incarcerated gang bosses in Argentina have been passing instructions on how to kill random civilians via family visits and video calls.

Court documents say the bosses paid underage hit men up to $450 to target four of the recent victims in Argentina’s third-largest city. The killing of Bussanich, two taxi drivers and a bus driver in less than a week in March, federal prosecutors say, “shattered the peace of an entire society.”

Street emptied. Schools closed. Bus drivers picketed. People were too terrified to leave their homes.

“This violence is on another level,” 20-year-old Rodrigo Dominguez said from an intersection where a dangling banner demanded justice for another bus driver slain there weeks earlier. “You can’t go outside.”

Panic was still palpable in Rosario last week, as police swarmed the streets and normally bustling bars closed early for lack of customers. A diner managed by Messi’s family, a draw for fans, reported quiet nights and less profit. Women in one neighborhood said they carry 22‐caliber pistols. Analía Manso, 37, said she was too scared to send her children to school.

Pope Francis last month said he was praying for his countrymen in Rosario.

Assaults and public threats continue. This month, a sign appeared on a highway overpass warning Argentine Security Minister Patricia Bullrich that gangs would extend their offensive to Buenos Aires if the government doesn’t back down.

Authorities have sought to reassure the public by sending hundreds of federal agents into Rosario. The AP spent a night with police last week as officers patrolled neighborhoods logging suspicious activity and setting up checkpoints.

Georgina Wilke, a 45-year-old Rosario officer in the explosives squad, said she welcomes federal intervention, including the military, to get crime under control. “We’ve been hit very hard,” Wilke said.

Omar Pereira, the provincial secretary of public security, promised the efforts represent a shift from failed tactics of the past.

“There were always pacts, implicit or explicit, between the state and criminals,” Pereira said, describing how authorities long looked the other way. “What’s the idea of this government? There is no pact.”

But experts are skeptical a tough-on-crime approach will stop drug traffickers from buying control over Argentina’s police and prisons.

“Unless the government fixes its problems with corruption, the crackdown on prisons is unlikely to have any long-term effect,” said Christopher Newton, an investigator at Colombia-based research organization InSight Crime.

For years, Rosario’s 1.3 million residents have watched warily as presidents and their promises come and go while the violence endures.

“It’s like a cancer that grows and grows,” said Benítez from her home, its windows protected by wrought-iron bars.

“We, on the outside, live in prison,” she said. “Those inside have everything.”

Maja Stark in the Mix After First Round 65 at JM Eagle LA Championship

Maja Stark

When you’re on a roll in golf, you might as well ride the wave as long as possible.

Maja Stark is hoping her recent wave of good play doesn’t stop anytime soon.

Stark, who comes into the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro on the heels of her best-career major championship finish at The Chevron Championship, fired a bogey-free 65 in the morning wave at Wilshire Country Club and is firmly in the mix, again, on the LPGA Tour.

Stark has now gone 44 holes on the LPGA Tour without making a bogey.

“It feels good. Don’t jinx it now,” she said Thursday in Los Angeles. “Obviously that’s what we want – I feel like I’ve just been more patient. Haven’t made any dumb mistakes. Just taking my medicine where I need to.”

Stark kept her tidy efforts going from The Woodlands to Hollywood, making two birdies in her first nine before turning on the jets for her second nine at Wilshire and making four birdies in a seven-hole stretch. She hit all 14 fairways in the first round and missed just three greens.

Grace Kim held the early lead after a 7-under 64. Stark sits just one shot back.

Stark admitted she was “so tired” when she arrived in L.A. after the marathon major week and “barely” practiced before she teed it up Thursday morning. She finished second alone at The Chevron, just two back of Nelly Korda’s winning mark. Stark’s previous best major result was a T9 at last year’s U.S. Women’s Open.

Along with her second-place result Sunday, Stark finished T3 just a few weeks ago at the Ford Championship presented by KCC. Things are clicking, she said, and there’s something – or someone – that isn’t going to be in her way this week.

“Nelly is always in front, so I don’t know,” Stark said with a smile. “I feel like I'm just playing solid. There is still a lot of things I think I could have done differently these two tournaments where it's been going really well.

“It just so depends on what everyone else is doing. If someone is having the week of their life, that's good for them. I'm just trying to learn from every round I have.”

Stark said the, well, stark contrast to her approach to things over the past few weeks has been how well she’s been managing things mentally.

“So, so much more confident in my game,” Stark said. “I still chickened out on a couple shots today which is just like me. I feel like I’ve been better at not chickening out as much. Then just knowing I can be patient and not have to chase birdies to actually make them, because I think when I’m chasing birdies, that’s when I make my mistakes.”

Stark’s lone victory on the LPGA Tour came in August 2022 at the ISPS Handa World Invitational, which she won by five shots over Allisen Corpuz. She had six top-10 finishes a year ago – including a T2 at the season opener at Lake Nona – but came into this year struggling, she admitted last week at The Chevron.

“Two months ago, it did not look likes this. It was actually terrible,” Stark said Sunday at The Woodlands about the state of her game after the calendar turned to 2024. “Nothing really was working for me, and then I feel like I really just analyzed everything and figured it out and got some great help from my coaches […] a lot about technique. It was kind of a mess earlier this year.”

Stark said Wilshire is “kind of similar” to Carlton Woods as there are a few pins she couldn’t go after like at The Chevron. Patience is key, she said, and concentrating on hitting to the bigger spaces of the greens will be something she’ll focus on over the balance of the week.

With a runner-up finish in her pocket and more good play through the first round at the JM Eagle LA Championship, Stark’s hopeful that her solid play means another solid result.
