Actual costs are based guest count and any additional services ordered. Pricing excludes bar beverages (but include all non-alcoholic drinks and a Champagne toast). Unauthorized early boarding will result in additional charges. All carry-on bags are subject to inspection. PAYMENT: The signed contract and deposit will confirm the cruise booking. Portland Spirit reserves the right to cancel booking if payments are not received by the due date. The guaranteed guest count or actual number in attendance, whichever is larger, determines final cost. The charter rate, food and beverage costs, and services ordered become non-refundable upon payment. Any remaining balance or on board charges must be paid at the conclusion of cruise. Guaranteed guest count and final payments for food, bar, and any additional services ordered are due 10 days prior to cruise date. Cruises departing on July 4th: Guaranteed guest count and final payments for food, bar, and any additional services ordered are due June 1. Portland Spirit is not affiliated with the City of Portland or any other organization's fireworks display and has no control over changes to or cancellation of the display. TAX: Client is responsible for any current or future sales tax assessment. CANCELLATION: Cancellation must be received in writing. Cruises departing January through November: The deposit will be refunded, less a 50% cancellation fee, if Client cancels more than 30 days prior to the cruise date. If for any reason the Portland Spirit must cancel a cruise due to a situation beyond our control, we would notify the client contacted and offer a future cruise credit or refund. DAMAGE: Any damage to the vessel will be assessed and repair, replacement, and cleanup costs will be billed to the client. ITEMS NOT ALLOWED: Loose flower petals, feathers, nails, tacks, tape, confetti, glitter, birdseed, rice or candles. CHANGE OF VESSEL AND/OR DOCK: Portland Spirit reserves the right to move the event to another dock and/or vessel of comparable quality. Contracted rates, or current seasonal rates for the new dock/vessel, whichever is less, will be applied based upon guest count, menu and services ordered. FORCE MAJEURE: The performance of this Agreement is subject to termination without liability upon the occurrence of any circumstance beyond control of either party - such as acts of God, war, major terrorist act on U.S. soil which make it impossible for 40% or more of the attendees to attend, government regulations, disaster, strikes (except those involving the employees or agents of the party seeking the protection of this clause), civil disorder, or curtailment of transportation facilities - to the extent that such Circumstances makes it illegal or impossible to provide or use the contracted facilities.

Explorer cruises are an adventure-style experience traveling at speeds up to 45 miles per hour. You are welcome to bring food and drink on board. The Explorer is an open-air boat and not climate controlled; please dress for weather. Although the boat is covered, there is an uncovered deck in the back. Please note that river conditions vary and may result in frequent, sustained turbulent motion along with varied weather. For safety and comfort, guests should be in good health and without conditions that could be aggravated by motion. Please consult your doctor prior to booking a cruise on the Explorer if you have a health concern. The boat is not wheelchair accessible.

Dear Annie: I was very happy to receive a lovely bridal shower invitation in the mail this week.        

Last year, I went to a total of four baby/wedding showers. Three of those invitations were sent via text, one by email. I took umbrage by the impersonal, thoughtless manner in which they were sent.        

After all, I will be setting an afternoon aside from my schedule and spending $50-$100 on a gift.        

Am I old-fashioned, or is this rude? -- Annoyed by the Invites        

Dear Annoyed: It is acceptable to send out a beautiful paperless post via email. A text message, less so. The invitation sets the tone of the shower.        

If it is to be very casual, then a text could suffice, but if it is very over-the-top, then a paper invitation, or a very nice paperless post, is better. What is rude is not saying “thank you” for your gifts. Showing gratitude to your guests is always in style.

Dear Annie: The recent letter about giving children experiences instead of things really struck a chord. When the writer said, “One of the most beautiful sounds in the world is the laughter of a child. You can almost hear their brain enjoying life,” it nearly brought me to tears.        

I’ve been a “recess teacher” at the local primary school (kindergarten through fourth grade) for nearly 32 years. A wedding ceremony kept going even as a tornado knocked out the venue’s power

(CNN) – Not even a tornado was able to keep a Nebraska couple from getting married.

Jessica and Austin Bracker tied the knot Saturday in Waterloo.

While the tornado tore through town ahead of the festivities, it left the wedding venue without power.

The couple decided to go ahead with their plans anyway and moved their entire setup indoors.

They said the guests all rolled with the punches and helped celebrate their moment.

The Brackers said the day was perfect overall and they had a great time.
