Turning 20: Adventure WV guides WVU students toward meaningful relationships, pride in West Virginia

For almost 20 years now, Adventure WV has been an important part of the student experience at West Virginia University , introducing thousands of students to the Mountain State’s outdoor opportunities while helping them make friends and learn new skills.

Heading into the anniversary year, one of the longest-running Adventure WV success stories is the First-Year Trips program, which was created as a peer-led, outdoor-based effort to help incoming first-year students become familiar with their new home in West Virginia by visiting some of the state’s most popular places.

“We want to create a tight-knit community for incoming students even before they set foot on campus,” said Morgan Haas, associate director with Adventure WV, who oversees the First-Year Trips program. “This helps them transition to college smoothly by assisting them in getting to know each other, including their peers and leaders, and by introducing them to the resources available on campus. One of our goals is to foster an early connection between students, WVU and the state.”

Greg Corio , assistant vice president for Outdoor Youth Advocacy and Initiatives with the WVU Brad and Alys Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative , started the First-Year Trips program during the 2003-2004 academic year as his graduate project, a program housed in the WVU Division of Student Life that has blossomed into one of the largest student-centric outdoor programs in the country.

“The First-Year Trips come at a transition point when students are not high school students and they are not college students, where they’re hungry to learn in school but they’re also a little nervous,” Corio said. “This is their first college experience — their first college experience with a lot of support in an environment they’re usually not super comfortable in with classmates they’ve never met being led by upperclassmen.”

Corio, a WVU alumnus, formed the idea of a freshmen outdoor orientation after seeing other universities do outdoor trips like those available in West Virginia. As a graduate student, he approached then President David C. Hardesty Jr. with a proposal for an outdoor orientation program with the potential to improve retention and graduation rates.

“President Hardesty said, ‘I've been waiting on a program like this for a long time,’” Corio recalled.

Student retention has increased by 7.3% and six-year graduation rates by 9.5% because of the program, according to institutional research.

After an initial launch, Corio connected First-Year Trips with the Freshmen Seminar in 2004 and the program began to expand quickly. Students participated in five Explore trips, showcasing some of West Virginia’s scenic landscapes, and one Habitat for Humanity trip.

“We had no idea if that first Habitat trip was going to work, but in the end, it did and those students became a family, and we knew we were on to something special,” Corio said.

Included in that 2004 trip was Carie Behe, a two-time University graduate who is now the senior global brand manager at Cotopaxi, a company that creates sustainably made outdoor gear.

Her First-Year Trip, one she came into with no outdoor experience, set her on the path to not only a professional career in the outdoors industry, but also toward building a love for the outdoors and traveling in her personal life.

“It utterly changed the course of my life. The person I am today is because I was a participant of Adventure WV and it has such invaluable meaning,” Behe said. “It’s hard to put into words what it means to me because it changed my life so significantly. Every facet of who I am as a person and where I’ve ended up 20 years later is because of this one program.”

Behe’s trip included stops at Coopers Rock, Blackwater Falls, Seneca Rocks and Spruce Knob, and concluded with whitewater rafting on the New River near Fayetteville.

A few years later, Behe returned to the program as a student leader, and has since been all over the world, exploring natural wonders. “I never could have accomplished any of these things if I wouldn’t have gone through Adventure,” she said.

Most participants are incoming freshmen, but transfer students can also sign up along with nontraditional students, such as Veterans.

“We want everyone to come on our trips because we believe it is a transformational experience,” Haas said. “We want these students to persist through their time here at WVU and we genuinely believe finding a sense of community, mentorship and overcoming obstacles together can support that.”

Branching out from the First-Year Trips concept are other programs within Adventure WV with a similar format, but for different demographics. The Sophomore Outdoor Adventure Reorientation Program allows upcoming sophomores to reflect on their first year at WVU, prepare for a future at the University and explore other parts of the country, such as the desert Southwest.

The Adventure WV model also led to creation of both the WVU Science Adventure School and the Ascend WV program.

“You bring a new group of people together who have a shared experience in the outdoors, and you help create a sense of community and belonging as well as help them fall in love with the beauty of West Virginia. It works with sixth graders as well as remote workers,” Corio said.

“All of these tell a story about the impact Adventure WV has had during the past two decades.”

SOAR with Adventure WV

Megan Bevins | Staff Writer | Thursday, September 21, 2023

Adventure WV invites rising sophomores for outdoor expeditions in Utah and West Virginia, granting three college credits. Scholarships, like the Zachary David Burns Scholarship, are accessible to non-WV residents.

SOAR Group in Utah showing WV Flag

The best part is — students can earn three college credits at the same time!

Participants can choose between two different Sophomore Outdoor Adventure Reorientation (SOAR) trips — one exploring Utah and one traveling around the Mountain State.

Logan Chapman, graduate assistant for Climbing and Guided Trips, says that attending a SOAR trip left him feeling more prepared going into his sophomore year.

“I had strategies for success and connections to on campus resources, and the discussions on trip focused pretty heavily on if we were on the path that was right for us,” Chapman said.

Chapman’s experience with SOAR led him to become involved in Adventure WV, eventually becoming a graduate assistant.

“The most enjoyable part of the trip for me was the connections and friendships that we made, and just immediately there's an instant bond with everybody,” he said. “On top of that, it was doing those things and connecting with other people in beautiful, unique places.”

SOAR Utah will span 14 days, May 8-21. The total cost for the trip will be $850.

Throughout the trip, students will explore the Canyonlands National Park and spend multiple days canoeing through the Green River.

“The nice thing about being on the river is the pace of the trip slows down considerably,” Chapman said. “You get up in the morning, make breakfast, spend time floating down the river and then set up camp for the evening.”

“Another great thing is that you get to access places that you can't get to without being on the river,” he added. “We saw a lot of unique sights, beautiful views and some great wildlife encounters.”

Students will be responsible for their own transportation to Denver International Airport, where the trip will begin. All costs following – including transportation, meals, lodging and rentals – will be included.

In order to receive three full credit hours for this trip, students must attend a pre-trip meeting, go on the 14 day expedition, complete two reflection assignments and attend two group meetings once the trip is over. Students must also attend three fall evening follow-up classes.

SOAR WV will span seven days, May 6-12. The trip will include activities like hiking, climbing and whitewater rafting. The total cost of the trip is $225 or free if you're eligible for the Pell Grant.

Gage Sneed, graduate assistant for First Year Trips, says that the SOAR trips differ from First-Year trips in that they visit different places and create a different sort of community aspect.

“I think my favorite part of the trip is just the difference between a SOAR WV trip and a first year trip,” Sneed said. “Going on both, you kind of just get the experience of the first year trip and the different community and different setting and different curriculum over the first year trip.”

“The community is different, the places you go are different, the activities you do are different, the people you meet,” he added. “Your leaders even have a different mindset and aspect of it.”

There are currently 10 slots open for the SOAR WV trip, but that may extend to 20 depending on demand.

The $225 fee will cover gear, food and transportation for the trip. A packing list will be provided on the trip or available for rental at no cost.

Adventure WV offers the Zachary David Burns Scholarship to aid in the fees for SOAR trips.

Zachary Burns was an Adventure WV participant in 2010 who valued his Orientation Trip experience. Sadly, Burns passed away in 2011. In his memory, Burns’ family established a fund to provide funding to students to participate in SOAR (Sophomore Outdoor Adventure Reorientation).

To apply for the scholarship, you must complete and submit the application linked below. Applicants must be non-WV residents. The scholarship committee will look at things such as financial need, quality of application and enrollment status.

Our Purpose

In support of the mission and vision of the University, the First-Year Experience and First-Year Seminars promote the five values of service, curiosity, respect, accountability and appreciation through campus partnerships and active engagement. The First-Year Seminar provides students the opportunity to engage with faculty and their peers on topics that foster pathways for success at West Virginia University and beyond.

To assist students in successfully transitioning to college life, by providing navigational tools and resources necessary for setting a foundation for success through the establishment of diverse, strong, positive, social and academic relationships; critical thinking; and creation of an academic plan that will result in timely progression toward graduation.

Our goals aim to meet our students’ needs.

We want students to build a sense of belonging, find their fit and make personal connections with faculty, staff and mentors who can help offer guidance and advice throughout their first year on campus.

We want to help students practice the skills that set them up for academic success, including tips and tricks in time management, note-taking, studying and locating the resources to access grades, advising, tutoring, success workshops and more.

Most importantly, we want to help students discover their passion, and then turn it into a major, take the steps necessary to graduate on time, and eventually pursue a successful and meaningful career.

Lehigh Launch Chile Accepting Applications for Fall 2024 Cohort

After two years of success in Ecuador, the Lehigh Launch program will be moving to Chile next year, and faculty director Hugo Ceron-Anaya believes it will offer participating students a truly unique and enriching experience.

“I sincerely think that it will be a fantastic opportunity for the students,” said Ceron-Anaya, an associate professor of sociology at Lehigh, whose research expertise lies in Latin America. “We’re going to have a great set of courses, and we’ll be based in Santiago, a city that has a lot to offer for students that they’ll be really interested in and enjoy, from arts to sports to food.”

Lehigh Launch is an experiential, integrative learning experience for first-year Lehigh University students of any major. High school students and families interested in applying or seeking more information can visit the Lehigh Launch website . The Fall 2024 cohort is still accepting applications on a space-available basis until May.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to start getting to know these students when they are seniors in high school and then to witness all the personal and academic growth they experience before they even arrive on the Lehigh campus for the spring semester,” said Katy Rene, assistant director of Study Abroad at Lehigh.

“I have also been so impressed by all the ways our program alumni are getting involved and pursuing additional international, research and co-curricular activities offered by the university,” Rene said.

Engaging Courses and Trips

Ceron-Anaya has several trips and visits planned for Lehigh Launch Chile, including one to the beautiful Chiloé Island, which includes the Chiloé National Park and the Tantauco Park nature reserve. Inhabited by indigenous communities for the last roughly 600 years, the students will speak to local communities about how they reconcile tourism with nature.

He also plans to visit La Serena, the capital city of Chile’s Coquimbo Region, which is particularly well known for its beaches. It is also one of the sites where Charles Darwin stopped during his South American scientific expedition, due to the wide variety of ecosystems found there, Ceron-Anaya said.

In Chile, Ceron-Anaya plans to teach one of his most popular Lehigh courses: “Race and Ethnicity in the Americas,” which takes a comparative approach to looking at Latin America and the U.S. and how each side of the continent develops their racial and ethnic ideas.

Santiago has so much to offer the students. There is so much to do for anyone interested in art, music, food, or just walking around the city.

Faculty director Hugo Ceron-Anaya

He also plans to offer a new course called “Utopias in the Current World,” which will delve into contemporary efforts to create better and more harmonious societies by drawing on past attempts to create utopian societies.

“I decided to go against all the messages in popular culture about the dystopian futures you see on shows at places like Netflix and Prime,” Ceron-Anaya said. “I want the students to think about a future that is not a misery for everybody, a future that is very different from what popular culture feeds us these days.”

A Walkable City

As part of that course, the students will visit the Mamalluca Observatory, a complex of astronomical telescopes and instruments near La Serena. The observatory fits into Ceron-Anaya’s class about utopias, he said, because it will help students think about the role science and technology plays in creating a positive future for everybody.

Lehigh Launch Chile participants will be staying in different locations across three adjacent neighborhoods in Santiago, the country’s capital city. The areas include parks, museums, markets, athletic fields, musical complexes, and a wide variety of cafes and small restaurants, Ceron-Anaya said. The city is also very walkable and bicycle-friendly.

Santiago, Chile

Santiago, Chile

“Santiago has so much to offer the students,” Ceron-Anaya said. “There is so much to do for anyone interested in art, music, food, or just walking around the city."

Ceron-Anaya expects Lehigh Launch Chile participants to spend a lot of time visiting Santiago museums, and he will be inviting artists and writers to speak to the students, particularly about economic issues, education, and what a utopian future could look like.

‘A Sophistication About the World’

It’s also easy to visit other countries and places from Santiago, Ceron-Anaya said. It’s very affordable to travel to nearby Argentina, for example, and bus services are available to the Andes mountain range.

Having been offered in Ecuador for the past two years, Lehigh Launch Chile will continue Lehigh’s long tradition of engagement with Latin American countries and scholars that date back to the earliest years of the university. Ceron-Anaya previously said he considers it important to keep this program in Latin America because it offers students a wide range of learning opportunities.

“Latin American studies will help our students develop a sophistication about the world in a different way than they will find in European countries,” he said. “In the cases of Ecuador and Chile, they’re going to find developing nations, with all the sort of problems that come with that, whether it’s issues of poverty, immigration, business, or ecology.”

Lehigh Launch Chile is the sister program to Lehigh Launch American West, which began in 2020 and features programs in the Rocky Mountains and field-based learning in Wyoming and New Mexico. Applications for Lehigh Launch American West is currently accepting applications for the Fall.

Adventure WV sees marked increase in student engagement

Adventure WV

A new mark for student engagement and participation was set by Adventure WV’s student programming segments earlier this year. Comprising guided trips , the WVU Climbing Wall , and the Well-Being Adventure Series , Adventure WV offers a vast array of student programming experiences each semester.

In a concerted effort to be student-focused, Adventure WV has adapted its programming to focus on short, affordable social activities. This shift has led to a rise in student engagement this year with more than 750 program registrations — a 40% increase from the previous year.

While Adventure WV continues to offer outdoor adventure experiences such as whitewater rafting, mountain biking, backpacking and climbing, the program has observed significant growth in registrations for activities emphasizing community building among peers.

These activities, which include Backcountry Baking, Road Trips to the New River Gorge, Tour of the Night Sky and Starry Night Floats, are designed to foster social connections while providing accessible and enjoyable experiences. Many of these popular trips incorporate local restaurants and community amenities, such as the Morgantown Farmers Market, further enhancing the sense of community among participants.

In addition to new guided trips, the increase in registrations also reflects Adventure WV's diverse range of offerings, including the Well-Being Adventure Series and Climbing Wall activities. By strategically focusing on affordability and expanding activity options, Adventure WV has successfully aligned its programming with student interests and feedback, contributing to the program’s continued growth and success.

Adventure WV extends a warm invitation to faculty, staff and students to participate in its unique and enriching activities, emphasizing that no prior experience is necessary.

For those interested in joining a guided trip or seeking more information, contact Jacob Rex at [email protected].
