Bidets – toilet attachments that clean you in place of toilet paper – have long been popular in countries like Japan, France, and Brazil, and they’re starting to become more common in the United States. For those of us who’ve become accustomed to the clean feeling a bidet provides, a portable bidet is just what you need when traveling, hiking, or camping. Usually a light, squeezable bottle with a spray nozzle, portable bidets are easy to use, pack, and clean. There are even electric bidets, some featuring multiple stream speeds to provide soothing comfort while they clean.

When shopping for a portable bidet, consider weight, liquid capacity, and whether or not it comes with a carrying pouch to use while traveling. Also note that you’ll still need a few squares of toilet paper or a small towel to dry up when finished.

Best Overall

Brondell gospa advanced portable bidet.

The high-quality silicone material is sturdy and easy to clean.

It doesn’t collapse as small as other portable bidets.

Brondell has spent more than two decades in the bidet game, and this update on its portable classic hits — or shall I say gently sprays — all the right points. Simply fill up the bottle at your sink, twist on the cap, and press the spring-loaded button to reveal the nozzle. The silicone is a good level of squishy – firm, yet soft – and gives off a strong, but not too strong, spray.

When you’re done, the nozzle pops back easily into the cap, and the whole bottle fits into a thick cloth pouch that comes included. Unlike the previous Brondell model, which looks a bit like a medical device, this portable bidet is sleek and comes in a few fun colors.

The Details: 5 ounces | Silicone | 13.5 or 17 fluid ounce capacity | Pop-up nozzle

Best for Backpacking

Culoclean portable bidet.

It sports a simple design that won’t add a lot of weight to your pack.

You’ll need to have a disposable plastic bottle handy or purchase one of the brand's reusable bottles.

This surprisingly useful portable bidet is great for minimalist travelers. Simply plug the bidet cap onto any standard plastic water bottle, flip, and squeeze. It’s very small and lightweight – perfect for backpackers – and can easily be transported in a small reusable bag. Alternatively, CuloClean sells hygienic bags and reusable bottles so you don't have to rely on plastic water bottles to use this bidet.

The Details: 0.42 ounces | Plastic | Twists onto bottle top

Best Electric

Vikken high pressure bidet.

It’s rechargeable and surprisingly stylish.

While it has two water pressure settings, the lower setting may not be strong enough to provide a sufficient clean.

As convenient, budget-friendly, and portable as many simple bottle bidets are, many of us need a stronger stream to get the job done. Enter the electric bidet. This Vikken bidet is beautifully designed and can do more than 100 sprays on a single USB-C charge, so you don't have to worry about keeping it plugged in while on the go. Once it’s charged, fill up the transparent water holder and flip out the nozzle to reveal a power button with two speeds.

One drawback to this electric bidet is that its 6.7 fluid-ounce capacity isn’t too big compared to other bidets, but you can attach it to a disposable plastic bottle to add more liquid capacity. And if you’re worried about reliability, Vikken offers a 12-month warranty.

The Details: 13.76 ounces | Plastic | 6.7 fluid ounce capacity | Foldable nozzle

Best Lightweight

Tushy travel bidet.

It packs down small and can clip onto the outside of your bag.

It might be tough to clean under the hinge.

Founded in 2015, Tushy’s cute and cheeky (pun intended) ads have managed to convince users to invest in a bidet toilet attachment, and its portable bidet is just as convenient. The unique, collapsible design crushes down to fit in a pocket-sized pouch, and it comes with a carabiner to attach to the outside of your bag. It also comes in a few loud colors, including Friday Fuchsia, and is extremely light when empty.

The Details: 5.3 ounces | Silicone | 11 fluid ounce capacity | Hinged nozzle

Most Easy to Clean

Brondell gospa travel bidet.

This all-in-one device is extremely easy to use.

It looks like a bit like a medical device.

Brondell’s original portable bidet is unbeatable when it comes to value and simplicity. Simply fill up the bottle, attach the nozzle, and spray to your heart’s content. Then give it a rinse and perhaps a little scrub with some soap when you’re finished, before sliding it into the carrying pouch with the nozzle facing down. This portable bidet comes in five colors, though it's not as sleek as other options. Still, it's a great choice for those who favor simplicity while still ensuring a clean feel.

The Details: 3.2 ounces | Plastic | 13.5 fluid ounce capacity | Twist-on nozzle

Tips for Buying Portable Bidets

Opt for lightweight options that are easy to pack.

Everything you pack makes a difference in terms of size and weight, so make sure your portable bidet is both small and light. It’s also important to have a carrying pouch, or at least a reusable bag so it doesn’t drip on your other items.

Consider the nozzle shape

Travel bidet nozzles are usually toothbrush-shaped with one or several holes at the tip for the water to shoot through like a shower head — though they aren’t all the same. Some options have multiple holes while others are bent at an angle. What you pick comes down to personal preference. Many website provide videos of the bidets being sprayed, so you can see the stream before you purchase.

Look for durable materials

Most travel bidets are made of plastic, but some use sturdier silicone. The important thing is for water to come out easily when you squeeze the bidet, though if it’s too soft the plastic can get permanently bent over time. You also want to ensure that the materials can withstand frequent washes.

Using a bidet can provide a better clean than just using toilet paper alone. Some users prefer to start cleaning with a bidet and drying off with a bit of toilet paper to prevent a damp feeling. Using a bidet not only can ensure cleanliness, but it cuts down on toilet paper use.

Bidets are sanitary if you keep them clean, though you’ll have to be careful of bacteria buildup inside the nozzle. You should thoroughly clean your portable bidet after every use and allow it to fully dry before storing it inside any bags.

Any residual spray won’t get inside the bidet container, just water, but you can clean it anyway by dripping in some dish soap with water and giving it a good shake. If your bidet comes a part in multiple pieces, it can help to let them all air dry separately before storing.

A manual portable bidet and a good wipe should do the trick, but an electric bidet will do an even better job. However, the drawbacks of an electric option are weight and price.

Best Portable Travel Bidets: Keep Your Tush Fresh on the Go

' src=

I grew up in a household that was all too proud of our bidet use. We had a Brondell bidet and we’d call it, “takin’ a ride on the buckin’ Brondell”. Don’t ask…

Sure, you’ve probably experienced the beauty of a portable toilet if you’re a vanlifer or nomad. But a portable bidet is the lesser-known, debatably more satisfying travel tool to keep in your personal hygiene arsenal.

Europe and Asia have already been on their bidet game for years , and bidets are just starting to make a splash , so to speak, in America. They’re a great way to keep you fresh on the go and reduce the use of toilet paper and/or wet wipes. Which saves you money and saves the planet from non-biodegradable PFAS “forever chemicals” that are found in TP and wet wipes. A win all-around!

Most stealthy (with bottle) : Tushy Silicone Collapsible Bidet

Most stealthy (without bottle) : CuloClean Portable Bidet Nozzle

Best spray stream : Easy@Home Portable Electric Bidet

What is a Travel Bidet?

A travel bidet is simply a refillable water bottle attached to a tube and nozzle that sprays out water. There are non-electric and electric travel bidets available that can provide varying levels of water pressure, spray precision, and discreetness.

The purpose of a bidet is to wash your groin and/or posterior area from urine or fecal matter by spraying water on the target areas. Just keep in mind that a feminine bidet wash must be performed properly so that infection doesn’t occur, if you get dangerous bacteria near your sensitive bits

How Do You Use a Travel Bidet?

There can be a bit of a learning curve to using travel bidets. Many people report awkward angles, accidentally spraying water everywhere, or ending up with a dripping-wet bum. But once you get the hang of it, it’s an absolute game-changer.

The basic usage steps are the same for nearly all portable bidets: fill the water bottle with cool or warm water, tightly secure the nozzle, resume your preferred position and then spray from either the front or back onto your private parts. You’ll have to squeeze manual portable bidets for water and just push a button or turn a dial for electric portable bidets.

A travel bidet can fit in nearly all travel backpacks or carry-on luggage–some even fit in a purse!

Best Portable Travel Bidets on the Market

When you’re on the hunt for a portable bidet, the key features to look out for are ease of use, compact for easy packing, and (ideally) budget-friendly. Check out my top picks.

Best Overall: Redsack Portable Bidet Bottle

redsack-portable-bidet-purple_-min

Key Features

  • Water capacity: 12.8 fl oz
  • 65-degree angled ergonomic nozzle
  • Collapsible, compact design
  • Comes in a range of cute pastel colors

What I like: This bidet has impressive water capacity for how small it packs up and doesn’t sacrifice on a long nozzle. It’s budget-friendly ($15) and is actually quite stylish! The lid protects the spray nozzle from dirt, dust or other outside debris that could clog it. Most collapsible designs don’t have a long spray nozzle, which results in some loss of spray precision and water pressure. But this design has that by retracting the nozzle into the reservoir bottle.

What to consider : While most reviewers report a great experience with no leaking, a handful report that the bottle feels flimsy and does leak. It seems the design has not been air lock tight for a select few.

Most Stealthy (With Bottle): Tushy Travel Bidet

tushy-travel-bidet-collapsible-expandable-min

  • Water capacity: 11 fl oz
  • Collapsible, soft bottle
  • Folds up into size of palm
  • Short, foldable nozzle
  • Comes with keychain carabiner and travel bag

What I like: At just 6in x 3in in size (expanded), this portable travel bidet is a convenient choice for backpackers or hikers. The included carabiner gives you the option to attach it off of your backpack, where it will stray protected in the durable travel bag it comes in. For such a short nozzle, it reportedly still puts out respectable water pressure.

What to consider : A handful of people report that the silicone can crack or leak along with folded ridges of the water bottle. And if you plan to carry this portable bidet full of water on a hike, it’s going to add a bit of weight.

Most Stealthy (Without Bottle): CuloClean Portable Bidet

culoclean-portable-bidet-cap-min

  • Water capacity: n/a
  • Ultimate discreet; fits into palm
  • Rugged; no parts that can break
  • Versatile; fits varying bottle sizes

What I like: The CuloClean bidet wash is simply a bottle cap with a built-in water valve that weighs just 0.42 oz and can fit nearly any size bottle. Just screw the cap onto your preferred bottle and spray for an instant bidet wash! Ideal for camping and hiking, you can even store it in your car’s glove box. It’s also made of recyclable material.

What to consider : If you use this bidet for backpacking or hiking, you’ll still have to carry a compatible water bottle, which will add weight and take up space. There’s a review stating that water leaks from the valve when turned upside-down because there isn’t a stopper in place. There’s another review that says water pressure is too weak–although I bet the water bottle you choose plays a big role in that.

Largest Water Capacity: Vowcarol Bidet Bottle

large-bidet-bottle-peri-min

  • Water capacity: 18.9 fl oz
  • Easy store nozzle
  • Angled spray head with dust cap

What I like: This large portable bidet holds enough water so you won’t have to worry about refilling midway through your butt shower. And even though it’s big, it’s super lightweight and the nozzle has 360-degree rotation. Many reviewers actually use it at home and not for traveling, since they feel it does a better job than the toilet bidets.

What to consider : Unlike most other portable bidets on this list made of silicone or nontoxic material, this bottle is made of plastic. Of course, it’s near impossible to say if the plastic material could cause harm. But using hot or warm water may release more potentially harmful plastic chemicals.

Most Simple and Reliable: HappyPo Butt Shower

happypo-butt-shower-bidet-min

  • Water capacity: 10 fl oz
  • Ergonomic bottle and nozzle
  • Free of BPA and plastic
  • Comes with storage bag

What I like: Cleaning this bidet is easy because it’s only two simple parts. It is reportedly air lock tight and provides enough pressure for a thorough bottom cleansing. It’s one of the more health and eco-conscious bidets on this list because it’s free of BPAs and any plastic materials.

What to consider : The HappyPo doesn’t have a retractable nozzle, making it less compact and portable than others. One reviewer noted that the water stream comes out a little heavy, meaning after 5-6 squeezes, the bottle was empty. But HappyPo makes an XL portable bidet if you find you need more water capacity.

Most Versatile: VIKKEN Go+ 2nd Gen Bidet

vikken-2nd-gen-rechargeable-portable-bidet-min

  • Water capacity: 6.75 fl oz
  • Electric, USB-C powered
  • Two different spray speeds
  • Can be used with water bottle included or attached to external bottles
  • 180-degree flip-out nozzle

What I like: The two different spray speeds make this portable bidet ideal for truly any situation, from gently cleaning a baby’s bottom to giving yourself a deep clean ;). You can attach the retractable nozzle to either the bottle it came with or an external bottle between 250ml-590ml (8oz-20oz) in size, which makes it super versatile. This sleek travel bidet will discreetly fit in your suitcase and gets up to 100 uses off of one USB-C charge. Lots of reviewers report an impressively strong pressure for maximum cleansing.

What to consider : One reviewer noted that the bidet is a “little loud” when in use–which may make some shy public bathroom users uncomfortable. Others have mentioned that the bidet can’t hold enough water so they have to refill during each use. And with a $39 price tag, it isn’t the cheapest portable bidet on the market.

Best Spray Stream: Easy@Home Portable Bidet

rechargeable-mini-bidet-sprayer-min

  • Water capacity: 11.8 fl oz
  • 4 different water speeds/pressures
  • Can be used on bottle included or separate bottles

What I like: This travel bidet is extremely similar in design and functionality to the Vikken Go+ except it has nearly double the water holding capacity and four different spray settings, versus just two. You can choose both the water pressure strength and the concentration of the flow. And unlike the Vikken, which is made of mostly plastic, the Easy@Home is made of stainless steel and boasts a metal air lock tight seal. It can also be used separately from the bottle and attached to external bottles that use a standard PCO28 thread (30mm).

What to consider : Because it comes with such a bigger bottle, this bidet is a little less portable and discreet to carry in your luggage or store in your glove box. You can opt to just carry around the nozzle for more portability, but a few reviewers note that the nozzle doesn’t fit on regular-sized water bottles typically found in the US, making bottle replacement really difficult. The bottle is manufactured in China, hence it probably fits the typical bottle sizes found in Asia.

What are the Benefits of a Travel Bidet?

Once you’ve experienced a bidet wash, you might just say goodbye to toilet paper. The benefits of a travel bidet include:

Feeling fresh : Keep optimum hygiene at the drop of a hat, no matter where you are.

More sanitary : A bidet wash is more sanitary than wiping with toilet paper because it completely washes away urine or fecal matter, unlike TP where you just.keep.wiping.

Eco-friendly : Not only does a bidet help you reduce the use of toilet paper (and its harmful PFAS chemicals), but bidets are also an eco-friendly alternative to non-biodegradable wet wipes.

Money-saving : A refillable simple portable bidet could replace weeks, months or even years worth of spend on buying toilet paper or wet wipes.

Camping and backpacking : Don’t worry about having to pack out your unhygienic, used toilet paper. Get that shower-fresh feel everyday of your trip with a camping bidet.

Pregnancy mobility : A hand held bidet wash may be easier for an expecting mother to use than trying to reach around and wipe. It’s also been found to be soothing on sore perineums.

Postpartum care : Use during diaper change time to help reduce mess and the use of toilet paper.

Elderly care : Ease the potential difficulty of wiping and reduce the chance of infection or UTIs.

So, Are Travel Bidets Worth It?

I believe they are absolutely worth it. Most travel bidets cost between $15-$40, which seems really reasonable for a product you could potentially use daily. Bidets just have so many obvious benefits: save your wallet, your body and the planet by using less toilet paper and wet wipes that aren’t biodegradable and/or contain harmful PFAS “forever chemicals”.

Particularly, I think a travel bidet is a necessity for any vanlifer since vanlifers constantly have to either go to the bathroom outside or empty their portable toilet. And bidets are simply more hygienic than toilet paper because they can clean more thoroughly and don’t leave residue behind (ASSuming you know what you’re doing).

The Definitive Guide To Portable Travel Bidets

what is travel bidet

Enter the portable bidet – also known as travel or backpacking bidet.

If you’re not convinced how wonderful these devices can be, try one. Low cost, and even more usable than your home model because they’re lightweight and require no water supply or electricity. You’ll quickly be persuaded. You might even want to upgrade to a bidet attachment or seat after a short trial period, like I did. I’m now using the excellent Bio Bidet BB-2000 and Brondell Swash 1400 .

What is a Portable Bidet?

A bidet is not a toilet. The two appliances are often combined in modern bathrooms, but historically and functionally they’re completely different devices. A toilet is used to capture waste; a bidet is used to help remove it from you. The bidet – whether full-sized model or portable – sprays water on the anus or genitals to remove unwanted material and wash you.

More expensive bidet types can warm your body, dry you afterward, or perform other functions. But all of them feature that same basic ability: removing feces remaining after elimination or in aiding feminine hygiene.

A portable bidet simply does that in a slightly different way than a full-sized home model. Rather than being built-in to a toilet or toilet seat, the portable style is just what the name suggests: a small portable bottle containing a portion of water. They come in two basic types: non-electric and electric .

There are two non-electric travel bidet types. One type you can buy is the hand-squeezable bidet bottle that has a tube and nozzle attached. Another type that is even simpler is an add-on bidet nozzle you can insert or screw on to an existing plastic bottle you might have lying around.

One advantage of using a nozzle device is that since you supply the bottle you have your choice of volume. For example, you could put twice the amount of water inside a plastic water bottle than the more common sort of bidet bottle you buy.

Non-electric travel bidets all have one drawback that is very much the same. Each one requires a fair amount of force from your hand in order to produce a high-pressure, steady stream. For some people that can be a difficult task. Arthritis, surgery, and other physical limitations can make it tough to balance, squeeze, and operate the bottle. Luckily, there are electric travel bidets that overcome that difficulty.

The electric type is almost always a battery operated model. They tend to be more expensive but they relieve you from the need to exert hand pressure. Usually those batteries are a pair of ordinary AA or AAA but some models actually use the “watch” type disc batteries and even recharge via a USB connector.

How do Portable Bidets Work?

what is travel bidet

The battery-powered models are just as portable as the squeeze-bottle hand bidets, but perfect for those who might have trouble exerting the needed hand pressure. Instead of squeezing the bottle a simple click on a button will suffice.

Do Portable Bidets Really Work?

The answer is a moderately qualified “yes”. Like any product, some work better than others. Some are easier to manipulate, higher quality, or offer special features. Others, less so. I see that obvious truth in the portable bidets I tested.

True, any portable bidet requires a little practice to find the best angle for your usage. A certain level of skill is a must, and some people may justifiably find it isn’t worth the effort. Also, these bottles don’t hold a huge amount of water. For some it will be enough, while others will find it not fully adequate.

Last, some people use these at home, but they’re intended to be operated on the go – around town, on vacation. For home use, there are bidet attachments – some of which are as low as the price of two portable bottles – intended to attach directly under a toilet seat. Or the more advanced fully fledged bidet seats.

So, if a portable turns out not to be a good solution for your bidet needs, don’t despair and don’t give up. Look around and you’re sure to find a model that works for you and your family.

Portable Bidet Reviews – Which is Best?

One thing portable bidets all have in common, besides the basic operating method, is low cost. They’re typically a few dollars (hand-squeezable models and nozzle devices) to a few dozen dollars (battery-powered models). Yet, for that low cost, they very often do an admirable job. So, without further ado, let’s dig into some specific models I personally tested and find out which portable bidet is best for your needs.

Dear Gerald, I am searching for an Aspen Travel Bidet. I have found the Europe website but I can’t contact anybody, I can only assume they have gone out of business. I am wondering if this travel bidet or something similar is available in the States? I have tried the Go Spa one but this is just not the same and not as effective. I do hope you can help. Kind Regards, Isabel Heller.

Looks like the company “ASPEN BIDETS EUROPE LIMITED” is no longer in business. The company has been dissolved as you can see here . I’m afraid you have to look for an alternative.

Hello. This is very interesting, and I must say I’m pleased to see so many options these days, but I’d like to mention a DIY alternative that I’ve been using for at least 30 years.

It’s simply a shampoo bottle with a cap that opens when you press one side so the contents come out at an angle. Easy to carry. I always have one with me when I travel.

I have found that round bottles don’t last long, because they tend to develop a crease in the middle from constant squeezing, and eventually break at the crease.

The best ones are slightly oval, or flatter. The ones I’m using now have lasted at least 15 years. However, newer types of plastic or rubber might last longer.

Thanks for the opportunity to share.

' src=

Thanks for the article. The other challenge for people who travel with only carry-on luggage is that space in the luggage is a premium. I just bought Tone Life travel bidet. It has a soft pliable plastic bottle but it is relatively large, the bottle it self is 7″ tall with the nozzle cap removed, 2.5″ diam (17cm X 7 cm diam). That’s alot of space in a carry-on bag. The bottle doesn’t flatten down very well. With effort i might be able to stuff one or two socks in it to use the space but the bottle and other similar consume a lot of space. So the other challenge is a 450 ml capacity bottle that travels in as small a packed volume as possible.

7 Portable Bidets That Will Make You Rethink Butt Hygiene

what is travel bidet

From a butt health perspective, toilet paper typically doesn't get you as clean as a bidet—and that can lead to things like hemorrhoids and a condition called itchy anus (no thanks). And environmentally speaking, toilet paper is not sustainable. Nearly 15 million trees a year get cut down to make toilet paper, and about 30,000 trees get flushed per day. Normalize spritzing your butt clean with water. I sorted through the portable bidets—and all of the bathroom puns and poop-lingo used to market them — to find the best ones.

The best portable bidets you can take with you wherever you go

Tushy bidets are reasonably priced and aesthetically pleasing (you know, for a thing whose purpose is to spray bits off your butt). Their travel bidet is collapsible, and doesn’t require any batteries. As one reviewer put it, “This bad boy is treating me right.”

“Dorothy couldn’t live without her Toto and neither can I,” one reviewer writes. Poetry. I don’t think there’s anything else to add here other than you can either have it cleanse you with a steady stream or manually pulse it.

My ex-boyfriend’s parents’ house used to have the fanciest toilet I’ve ever seen. (The seat heated up!) Of course there were several bidet options. This portable bidet, currently on Kickstarter, feels like the portable version of that toilet. It’s got a minimalist design, antibacterial nozzle, and four pressure settings.

There are some delightfully strange marketing images for this bidet, like an image featuring a cheese grater, roll of toilet paper, and a peach with some dried fruit against a pastel background to convey that toilet paper is rough on your butt (I assume). This squeeze-bottle portable bidet comes in three colors: white, light green, and teal.

This is not the prettiest of the bunch, but it is a battery-free option that doesn’t require you to squeeze (you simply press a button), and it has an angled nozzle.

The 6 Best Portable Bidets, According To A Urogynecologist

Experience that fresh and clean feeling everywhere you go.

what is travel bidet

Portable bidets are not only great for travel but also offer a way to test out a bidet before committing to a home bathroom setup. No matter what your own personal circumstances are, the best portable bidets have an angled spout, a compact design, and are easy and simple to use. So whether you fell in love with a bidet on your trip abroad, or are looking to try one out for the firs ttime, there’s a portable bidet for you. But to get some additional context, Bustle reached out to an expert to find out what you should look for in a portable bidet.

Dr. Victoria Scott is a Los Angeles-based Urogynecologist. She is the co-author of A Woman's Guide to Her Pelvic Floor: What the F*@# is Going On Down There.

What To Look For In A Portable Bidet

Dr. Victoria Scott, urogynecologist and author of A Woman's Guide to Her Pelvic Floor: What the F*@# is Going On Down There, says, portable bidets “may also be useful for people who have become bidet-obsessed and can't bear the thought of leaving their bidet at home.” They with angled spouts are easy to aim , and some spouts are even adjustable for extra precision. You can choose from either electric or manual styles, both of which have their advantages. Electric bidets provide a steady stream of water and can be easier to use for people with mobility issues. Manual bidets tend to be cheaper and are often simpler to travel with since they don't require batteries or an outlet.

If you plan to frequently use your portable bidet on the go, look for one that comes with a convenient travel bag for easy packing. Some bidets can also be taken apart, either by screwing the top on upside down or removing the water cup, which makes storing and packing them even simpler.

Unlike home bidets, travel bidets will always need to be refilled fairly often, as they are meant for short-term use. There's no one-size-fits-all answer to how often you'll need to refill your portable bidet, but keep in mind that capacity will also determine the size of the bidet itself. A bidet with a lower capacity may be easier to stash in your bag or suitcase but will need to be refilled more often.

1. The Overall Best

EKO MicroJet MJ-450 Portable Bidet

  • Powerful stream
  • Comes with a carrying bag
  • Large 450 mL capacity
  • Some reviewers report minor leaking

The EKO MicroJet portable bidet is highly rated for its performance and will leave you with a thoroughly clean feeling. Specially designed "MicroJet" holes are responsible for creating a strong and powerful stream of water while a long, angled nozzle provides precise control. This portable bidet is also designed without any unnecessary air valves that typically cause leaks. With a 450-milliliter capacity, it’s one of the largest on this list.

One fan raved: “Love this little bottle! It is extremely easy to squeeze and get a good pressure stream for cleaning. The volume of the bottle is large enough that a single fill provides enough water for a thorough clean. I like having something that I can fill with the exact right temperature that I like. The little bag is great for storage.”

Capacity: 450 milliliters | Power type: manual | Available colors: 1

2. The Best Manual Bidet

Brondell GoSpa Travel Bidet

  • Also available on Home Depot, $12
  • Includes a travel bag
  • Large 400 ml capacity
  • Available in five colors
  • Reports of bottom hole leaking

This simple squeeze-bottle bidet is easy to use and easy to travel with. The angled nozzle top can be flipped and stored inside the textured bottle for compact storage, and the whole bottle can then be tucked inside the included travel bag. Its stream isn’t described as being as powerful as the option above, but still strong enough to get the job done. This bidet features a metal airlock that helps to provide a consistent spray, and the bottle holds 400 milliliters of water, so you won't need to constantly refill. It’s a popular choice on Amazon too, with an average rating of 4.4 stars and over 6,000 reviews.

One fan raved: “This one works great! The wand on the nozzle is the perfect length to reach your backside. The spray nozzle has good water pressure. The valve on the bottom of the water bottle is super nice and makes it easier to use. It packs up nicely and the travel bag is super convenient.”

The reservoir holds up to 140 milliliters of water, so it will need to be refilled more frequently than some manual options. The upside of the lower capacity, though, is that this portable bidet is smaller and more discreet.

One fan raved: “ OMG, I'm so happy I bought this product. It has been a game-changer in my bum cleanliness. I absolutely love it. So I got this b/c I live in a rental and I didn't want to buy the ones that are attached to the toilets. Plus, I have a 2 story home and I didn't want to buy one for every toilet. So I got two of these, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. I love that it's compact but has a strong stream.”

How We Narrowed Down The Best Portable Bidets

The products that were selected for this list are all lightweight and travel-friendly options that are backed by user reviews. We sourced these products ourselves with considerations such as capacity, convenience, and effectiveness top of mind. We included both electric and manual options in order to offer you enough choices to accommodate your unique lifestyle and needs.

How do you use a portable bidet?

Los Angeles-based Urogynecologist Dr. Victoria Scott explains, “A travel bidet consists of a nozzle connected to a squeeze bottle that allows you to clean yourself in a similar way [compared to toilet paper], or a nozzle connected to an electric sprayer.” Simply fill the bottle or chamber with water and securely screw on the nozzle to prevent any leaks. If you have a vagina, Dr. Scott advises spraying front to back, “similar to wiping with toilet paper,” she notes. “This prevents flushing bacteria into the urethra and bladder to cause an infection.”

What is the downside of a portable bidet?

Bidets in general can take some use to getting used to. You especially want to consider the temperature of the water you’re using and ensure that it’s not too hot. It’s also important to make sure the bidet is cleaned thoroughly before each use. As Dr. Scott mentioned above, bacteria can be flushed back into the urethra and bladder if not used or cleaned properly. If you’re concerned about how bidets affect vaginal health in general, Dr. Scott did note, “One study showed that bidets alter the vaginal microbiome , but this area needs more research.”

Do you still have to wipe after using a bidet?

You do not need to use toilet paper when using a bidet — that’s what makes them such a great, eco-friendly option. “Bidets can function like a sink that you wash yourself with after using the toilet,” Dr. Scott explains. “A bidet is designed to replace toilet paper by squirting water on the anus or vulva to clean them after using the toilet.”

Good information. Do any of the bottles squish down, and stay squished, to reduce the volume? When travelling by carry-on only, every cubic centimetre is precious. Thanks.

Sorry, I haven’t found it yet.

Best Portable Bidets for Travel

Below are some of the main things that we should keep in mind while buying portable travel bidet s.

  • Weight: The majority of portable bidets are just nozzle attachments that fit any water bottle and weigh less than an ounce. By including a bidet in your backpacking toiletry kit, you’ll be able to carry less toilet paper (or none at all!). Bidets that are supplied with a certain water bottle weigh more.
  • Type: Both a bottle with an attached nozzle and a portable bidet with simply a nozzle are available. Simply put, nozzles are just that—nozzles. Most plastic water bottles can accommodate these nozzles. This style of portable bidet is the lightest and easiest to pack. This type requires a water bottle, although they are made to work with the majority of common throwaway plastic water bottles. We advise doing this with the “dirty bottle” that you use to install your thread-on water filter.
  • Nozzles for portable bidets: Holy Hiker Backpacking Bidet, UYICOO Portable Travel Bidet, and CuloClean Bottle Top Travel Bidet are three nozzle bidets (left to right). A nozzle that comes with a particular bottle that it is made to function with is what is known as a bottle with an attached nozzle in a portable bidet. It is heavier and bulkier to use a portable bidet of this type. To get the high-pressure spray you need to fully clean yourself, however, the bottle that comes with these is typically better suited. This sort is a better choice if weight or space savings are not a concern.
  • Packability: As was already said, nozzle-only portable bidets are quite portable. This type of portable bidet is commonly approximately the size of a cork. Portable bidets yet utilize a separate bottle are far less portable. portable toilet on the floor The Original HAPPYPO portable bidet didn’t make our list due to its size.
  • Material: Plastic or silicone makes up the majority of portable bidets. Both of them function well, but plastic will endure longer. On the other hand, a plastic portable bidet will contain at least one silicone or rubber o-ring. And if it becomes dry and cracks, this component of a plastic bidet needs to be changed.
  • Pressure: To properly clean yourself, you need extremely high water pressure. Better results come from higher pressure. Because of this, you need a portable bidet setup with a tiny nozzle to get the highest pressure. A bottle that is simple to squeeze is another requirement. The pressure will increase as you squeeze the bottle more tightly.
  • Durability: Portable bidets are incredibly robust. They are extremely durable. On the majority of portable bidets, however, new o-rings will eventually be required to maintain a tight seal. The good news is that most hardware stores with a wide assortment of o-rings may assist you in finding a replacement for any dry and cracked o-rings on your bidet.

Using a portable bidet is simple. Follow these steps for a refreshing and hygienic experience:

  • Fill the Water Reservoir : Fill the bidet’s water reservoir with clean water up to the recommended level.
  • Position Yourself : Position yourself comfortably on the toilet seat or any suitable location.
  • Direct the Nozzle : Aim the bidet’s nozzle towards the desired cleansing area.
  • Activate the Spray : Depending on the bidet model, either press the spray button or adjust the control to activate the water spray.
  • Adjust Spray Pressure : If applicable, adjust the water pressure to your desired level of comfort.
  • Move the Nozzle : Move the bidet’s nozzle gently to ensure thorough cleansing.
  • Pat Dry : After using the bidet, pat the cleansing area dry with toilet paper or a clean towel.
  • Clean and Store : Clean the bidet as per the manufacturer’s instructions and store it securely for future use.

Portable bidets offer several benefits that make them a must-have for travelers.

  • Improved Hygiene and Cleanliness: Compared to only using toilet paper, portable bidets offer a more comprehensive and hygienic cleansing experience. They guarantee top hygiene even when there is restricted access to water and conventional bidets by efficiently removing bacteria and preventing potential diseases.
  • Environmentally Friendly Alternative : Travelers can drastically reduce their use of toilet paper by using a portable bidet. This sustainable option for environmentally aware tourists helps reduce waste and environmental effects.
  • Enhanced Comfort and Freshness : Portable Bidets provide a pleasant and refreshing experience. When traveling, especially in hot and humid conditions, the moderate water spray promotes relaxation by giving off an air of cleanliness and freshness.
  • Cost-Effective and Convenient Solution : By investing in a portable bidet, you won’t need to buy or carry around a lot of toilet paper. Long-term financial savings and the ease of having a portable cleansing gadget are also benefits for travelers.

While disposable travel wipes may seem like a convenient option for personal hygiene while traveling, they fall short in comparison to portable bidets. Here’s a comparison of the two:

Portable Bidets

  • Give the experience of cleaning up more thoroughly.
  • Sustainable and beneficial to the environment.
  • Long-term economic value-for-money.
  • Simple to use and keep up.
  • Requires access to clean water.
  • Requires proper storage and cleaning.

Disposable Travel Wipes:

  • Convenient and easy to use.
  • No need for water or additional accessories.
  • Less effective in thoroughly cleaning.
  • Generate waste and environmental impact.
  • May contain harsh chemicals that can irritate.
  • Ongoing expense of purchasing disposable wipes.

Considering these factors, portable bidets emerge as the superior choice for travelers seeking optimal hygiene and sustainability.

Depending on the bidet model, different cleaning and storing procedures may be required. It’s better to stick to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Typically, cleaning involves rinsing the bidet with water and, if necessary, using mild soap. Before storing the bidet in a spot that is clean and safe after cleaning, make sure it is totally dry.

FAQs For Portable Bidets for Traveling

There are a lot of questions that come to mind related to portable bidets for travel some of the commonly asked questions are answered below.

A. When the sprayer is not in use, a hand-held bidet’s T-valve prevents water pressure from building up in the bidet hose. The metal or plastic T-valve, which is connected to the toilet’s fill valve, is located under the tank. Turn the T-valve handle until it says “ON.”

A. Sit on the rim of the bidet or crouch over it to take your position on it. Freestanding bidets don’t have seats as toilets do (so you can’t sit on them). Choose the setting or mode that will work best for the area you need to be cleaned. Choose our feminine wash option to clean up after peeing.

A. You shouldn’t need to use toilet paper to wipe yourself clean if you are using your bidet correctly and if it is of great quality. Better than any amount of wiping, a high-quality bidet will completely clean your behind. To dry yourself off, you might want to use a little toilet paper.

A. They are inexpensive, ecologically beneficial, and sanitary. The issue is that you cannot bring a standard bidet that is permanently installed in your bathroom with you when you travel. So a portable bidet is a great option if you want to save toilet paper and keep it clean wherever you go.

A. The answer is that portable bidets are made to work with ordinary tap water. However, it’s advised to utilize bottled water for a safer experience if you’re traveling to a place with questionable water quality.

A. Yes, people of all ages can utilize portable bidets. Children and the elderly particularly benefit from them since they offer a more thorough and gentle cleansing experience.

A. Portable bidets are allowed on airplanes. However, it’s recommended to check with the specific airline’s regulations regarding the transport of liquids and electronic devices.

A. Portable bidets are made to be adaptable and work with the majority of common toilet designs. Nevertheless, there may be a few uncommon situations where some toilet styles are inappropriate :

Nothing beats washing with water, especially when you’re in the wilderness. You may clean up after using the restroom in the woods without using a tonne of toilet paper or wet wipes if you have a portable bidet. Simply put, using water makes you cleaner than paper.

In many cases, a portable bidet is little more than a tiny nozzle that attaches to a water bottle. Carrying a portable bidet on your upcoming outdoor excursion should be a no-brainer since they are lighter and more packable than a pack of wet wipes.

The Ultimate Guide to Portable Bidets

Stay squeaky clean when you go on-the-go with our guide to using and loving your...

22 Jan, 2020

Americans have FINALLY uncovered special intelligence that the rest of the world has already known: Bidets are the best way to clean your butt after you poop! Now, with more sleek and affordable portable bidet attachments, like TUSHY, on the market, it’s becoming more common and a lot easier to clean your butt the right way by having a bidet in your home.

But unless you have bowels of steel, your home isn’t the only place you’re pooping. Admit it. Your babysitter doesn’t call every day at 2:30 pm and talk to you for upwards of 20 minutes.

We all know you’re pooping at work. And the truth of the matter is, nature comes knocking at your backdoor no matter where you are but unfortunately, not everywhere has a bidet! Luckily there are portable bidets , also known as travel bidets on the market that make pooping on the go, feel like pooping at home.

What is a Travel Bidet?

A portable or travel bidet is a conveniently sized bottle that you manually squeeze to produce a stream of cleansing water. They come in standard and collapsible models, and they feature spouts designed for easy, precise and thorough, on-the-go cleaning. Travel bidets are designed for simple and discreet portability so when you take it to the bathroom, no one HAS to know what’s going on… but if you’re anything like us, you’ll be bragging about the poop you're about to drop.

Why a Bidet?

Why use a bidet? Well, simply put, water cleans better than dry paper. Wiping with dry toilet paper leaves behind excess fecal matter that could lead to an array of unpleasant and sometimes even dangerous after-effects. Smell , discomfort, and skidmarks aside, wiping with toilet paper can lead to UTIs, yeast infections, and anal fissures .

Using a bidet changes all that. A cleansing, soothing water wash leaves you clean and shower-fresh all day long… or until your next dump.

Besides offering great health and hygiene benefits to users, bidets also help protect the environment. Americans use over 34 million rolls of toilet paper every day which wastes precious resources and damages the environment and ecosystems that rely on trees. The bidets can reduce toilet paper consumption by 75 to 100%.

Benefits of a Bidet

Health and hygiene.

Bidets wash away more fecal matter than toilet paper with a gentle, non-invasive, cleansing stream.

Bidets are a cost-effective alternative to toilet paper, seeing as the average American family spends $500 on flushable paper per year. When you switch to a bidet to handle the heavy doody stuff, you end up using 80% less toilet paper than normal.

Environmental

In the U.S., 27,000 trees are chopped down every single day for the sole purpose of toilet paper. Per DAY! 15 Billion trees are chopped down worldwide annually just to be flushed down the toilet.

How Do I Use a Handheld Bidet?

Let me guess. You’re a little intimidated at the prospect of a bidet that you hold in your hand. Don’t worry. We will walk you through the simple steps of using a portable bidet sprayer.

Fill ‘er Up

Before taking your bidet into the stall, simply fill it up with water. The great thing about this is that you can choose the temperature you’d like. You can use cold water for those poops that you know are going to be spicy. You can go the warm water route for those cold winter months. Or you can pick something right in between.

Let’s Get The Potty Started

POOP. You probably don’t think that you need much help in this area but you definitely do. The TUSHY Ottoman toilet stool  is another great accessory for your bathroom that will position your colon at the proper angle for the easiest and healthiest poop.

Find All Your Right Angles

Position the TUSHY bidet at your b-hole. You can go from the front or the back for the perfect aim. Choose whichever angle feels right to you that provides a direct butt-shot. TUSHY Travel is a great option for portable bidets because the spout has an adjustable angled nozzle and is easy to squeeze.

Ultimate Guide to Portable Bidets

Start squeezing the bottle to release the direct stream. Spraying with water will alleviate the irritation caused by too much wiping… especially after those hefty deuces. Once you’ve sprayed your booty clean, you can either air dry or you can use a reusable bum towel to pat dry. Both methods are great for sustainable pooper on the go.

THe Ultimate Guide to POrtable Bidets

Sure, not everyone has embraced the bidet, but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer while you’re out and about. TUSHY Travel is a convenient, sustainable and healthy replacement for your TUSHY bidet when you have to go… on the go.

6 Best electric portable bidets

Reviewed: 6 Best Electric Portable Bidets For Travel

Do you miss the feeling of a clean bum when you’re traveling or out of the house? You love your bidet at home but that doesn’t mean you can’t get the same level of hygiene when you’re out or on the road.

This is where battery-operated portable bidets come into the picture. Take that same cleanliness out with you by packing along a small, handheld bidet that can fit into a purse or backpack.

An electric portable bidet is ideal as they are economical, compact, and come in a lot of different versions. Which version is best for you?

The best electric portable bidet is one that fits all of your criteria based on how you plan to use it. Each one has a specialty that will make it ideal for you. In this article, we review 9 different ones that serve specific functions so you can choose the best option that works for your needs.

Our Top Three

Best overall: blaux electric portable bidet sprayer.

It’s waterproof and has a leak-free design. The rechargeable battery is long-lasting and is good for 100 cycles. Ergonomic and adjustable it is ideal in any setting.

Best Budget Option: Mighty Rock Meidong Portable Travel Bidet

A great price for a great product without sacrificing quality. The nozzle swivels for a lot of flexibility plus it is compact and doesn’t leak. Very effective!

Most Versatile: Hibbent Portable Bidet Handy Toilette

This handheld bidet washlet can be used with its own reservoir or attached to a regular water bottle. 2 cleaning speeds and high pressure make this a can’t miss product.

Best Overall Portable Bidet Sprayer: BLAUX Electric Portable Bidet Sprayer

Blaux electric portable bidet

The primary reason that we give this travel bidet sprayer the best overall rating is that it has high pressure. Although no travel bidet can compare to an at-home bidet seat, this one has high enough pressure (410ml per minute!) for an on-the-go option that many don’t offer.

Some people may even feel the pressure is too high. Luckily there is a low-pressure option as well.

The nozzle also sets the Blaux bidet apart from the competition. Rather than a concentrated jet of water, it is wider so it does a better job at cleaning the area thoroughly and quickly. Plus it can be replaced if it ever gets clogged or damaged.

Rounding things out is the fact that the bidet is water-resistant so it can easily be washed under running water or even used while in the shower. Also, the rechargeable battery is good for 100 cycles of average use. How long each session is will determine how close you get to that number. With a reservoir of 170ml or just under 6 fluid ounces, it is usually enough for one cycle to get you thoroughly cleaned.

There are a couple of downsides, however. The biggest one being that the charging cable is magnetic and not standard. If you lose the cable or it gets damaged then there is no way to buy a replacement.

Next, the weight and size are not ideal for those that don’t want to carry a big purse.

Verdict: Blaux is a very good bidet that performs well and is a great choice for use on the road or even at home.

Most Versatile Electric Travel Bidet: Hibbent Portable Bidet Handy Toilette

Reviewed: 6 Best Electric Portable Bidets For Travel 7

When you’re out and about, versatility is key for an electric travel bidet. That’s why we chose the Hibbent Toilette for this category. Since it can be used with its own reservoir (165ml capacity) or with a regular water bottle, you have options. Using it with a water bottle is popular for two reasons: It takes up less space in a bag when you don’t attach the reservoir and you get more water per cycle with a water bottle. If you often find the amount of water in the reservoir insufficient then a water bottle is the best solution. (Be warned, however, that the adaptor will only attach to water bottles with narrow spouts.)

There are two pressure settings: high and low. The high setting is for rear wash and it says that it can clean at up to 3 meters or about 9 feet. This number doesn’t mean much and unfortunately, the company doesn’t provide the PSI that it works at. However, it is one of the highest pressure travel bidets on this list.

The low pressure is for feminine wash and is much more gentle. It can also be used for cleaning the rear if you have sensitive skin but it takes up to 60 seconds for the cycle.

Another nice feature is how quiet the operation is. People in a bathroom stall next to you may not hear much noise coming from the device so you can avoid an awkward moment.

Verdict: This is a great runner-up for the best overall portable bidet. It is very versatile and lasts 100 cycles on a full charge like the Blaux.

Best Budget Portable Bidet: Mighty Rock Meidong Personal Mini Bidet Sprayer

Reviewed: 6 Best Electric Portable Bidets For Travel 8

For much less than what you would pay for other battery-powered bidets, the Meidong is still very convenient. It does have dual pressure settings so it can be used both for rear cleaning and for a feminine wash. However, the jet is narrow so it doesn’t cover as much area as the Blaux. It will take slightly more maneuvering to use it as a rear cleaner. It does get bonus points for having a swivel nozzle so it can be positioned well.

The non-toxic silicone reservoir can hold up to 140 ml of water which is definitely enough for feminine washing but for rear cleaning it may need to be refilled.

It isn’t a rechargeable model so it does require two AAA batteries which aren’t included.

Verdict: Although there are better portable bidets available, this is a good cheap option. It is ergonomic, leakproof, and works like a charm.

Best Electric Travel Bidet for Camping: MyPortaWash Handheld Water Sprayer

Reviewed: 6 Best Electric Portable Bidets For Travel 9

Being at an off-grid campsite doesn’t mean that you have to settle for a dirty bum. With the MyPortaWash to go bidet, you can get as clean as if you were in your home bathroom. This is unlike the other travel bidets as it is exactly like the handheld bidet sprayers that attach to your toilet at home. (You can check out our picks for the best handheld bidet sprayers here !)

The way that it works is that you have a hose with one end attached to a marine-grade pump that sits in a reservoir with water. It can be a bucket, sink, or even a stream since it has a built-in sediment filter. The other end is a handheld sprayer that looks like a hose sprayer. The design gives you great pressure and total coverage for easy clean-up.

At 2.5 liters per minute, there is no mess that is too difficult to clean up.

What adds to the value of this camping bidet is the fact that it comes with a shower head so it can serve two purposes. For those concerned about bulk when packing, this bidet is only 1.37 pounds with everything included. It can easily be fit into a backpack and not weigh you down, even though the hose is 6 feet long.

Verdict: This is the ideal bidet for camping, hiking, or even on an RV or boat.

Best Portable Bidet Spray for Postpartum: Insolife Pocket Bidet

Reviewed: 6 Best Electric Portable Bidets For Travel 10

If you’re looking for the best travel bidet for women and for postpartum cleaning, then Insolife is your best option. It is ideal for use as a feminine wash since it has a unique nozzle head with 14 holes rather than the others that have a more concentrated jet. This allows for gentle cleansing on the front or back. Ideal for use as a postpartum peri bottle but much better.

The compact size is also very nice as it is really tiny when separated from the reservoir. It can fit into most handbags and then be attached to a water bottle. However, the reservoir is 200ml in capacity so if you have the space in your bag then this is more than enough for most clean-ups.

The ergonomic design makes it a cinch to use and the 45° angle is ideal to get it to the right spot.

Be warned that the pressure is not very strong. It is not ideal for bum washing unless it is a very light movement. It’s helpful, but not the best when it comes to that. If you are looking to use it more for postpartum or just for a freshening feminine wash then it is the best one out there.

Another thing to be aware of is that it has a ball valve to control the flow of water. This can make the flow uneven or even block it entirely. Luckily, it can be removed which is recommended.

Verdict: It has a lot of great benefits but the pressure is a downer.

Best Compact Portable Bidet: Toto HW300-W Portable Travel Washlet

Reviewed: 6 Best Electric Portable Bidets For Travel 11

Toto is one of the leaders in bidet sales all over the world. Their washlet is one of the best bidet seat attachments for the home. It is no wonder that their electric portable bidet would be rated very highly. It is well-designed and engineered and is the most compact one on the market.

The reservoir is a generous 180ml of capacity. The telescopic body collapses the reservoir when it is empty so it is half the size. This makes it extremely convenient for use on the go as it fits into small purses without issue.

The nicest part is the nozzle as it is very similar to one that you would find on a bidet seat attachment in a home bathroom. It offers nice coverage so you don’t need a lot of pressure to get clean.

For some weird reason, the Toto travel washlet instructions are always in Japanese. If you do buy one and need them in English then you can download the PDF here .

The downside of this washlet for many people will be the price. It is the most expensive of all the ones reviewed here in this article. However, Toto is a major brand in Japan and is one of the most trusted bidets there. Just about every home in Japan has a bidet or smart toilet and many are also using this very same travel version.

Verdict: For convenience, durability, and performance, the Toto is a real lifesaver.

What to look for in an electric portable bidet

How you plan to carry your battery-powered bidet sprayer is going to determine the size you should look into. Usually, they are between 5 and 8 inches long. If you are carrying a purse, then it shouldn’t be much bigger than the palm of your hand. In this case, the Toto portable washlet is your best bet as it is only 6 inches long when retracted.

If the size of the Toto is too big for you then look for models like Hibbent that can attach to a water bottle so you can get away with even less space being taken up by the bidet.

For those with a diaper bag, backpack, or any other large bag, the size won’t matter much. Though, the weight of it should be considered so you aren’t weighing yourself down.

Reservoir capacity

A typical travel bidet reservoir has a capacity of between 140ml and 200ml. How much you will need depends on how much cleaning you need to do. Generally, a high-pressure wash only requires about 30 seconds of spraying to get the job done. With most travel bidets, this is going to mean that you might have to refill the reservoir.

For example, the Blaux model has a reservoir with a capacity of 165ml. The high pressure uses about 410 ml per minute so a 30-second wash will deplete the chamber and require a fill-up in some cases.

If you find that 30 seconds isn’t enough or that you feel like you will need more water then your options are to go for a bidet that attaches to a water bottle. Or, bring a water bottle into the bathroom with you to add more water to the reservoir.

Rechargeable vs standard batteries

One of the worst things that can happen when using an electric travel bidet is that it runs out of power while using it. A rechargeable bidet gets between 60 and 100 cycles between charges and generally a month without charging. This gives plenty of time to get it charged enough to not worry about it running out of power.

A battery-powered one will generally get fewer cycles but won’t run out of juice when it isn’t being used. If you only use a travel bidet a few times per month then it can last for months before you need a new battery.

The benefit of a battery-operated one is that you can carry around a spare battery or two without taking up much space. If you run out while using it then it is easy enough to pop a new battery in and finish up. If a rechargeable runs out then you’re stuck with using toilet paper until you have the chance to plug it into a USB outlet like a laptop or outlet.

The unfortunate fact for both types is that none of the models we know of have a battery status light so you never have any idea of when it is about to run out.

Many travel bidet models have a narrow nozzle sprayer that has a concentrated jet of water. Others have wider nozzles that cover more area. The wider nozzles are better as they clean faster and more thoroughly. If the model you are interested in has a narrow nozzle then look for ones that swivel so you can cover more area and clean more quickly. Quick cleaning is important so you have less need to refill the reservoir.

The noise level

If you plan to use the bidet in a public restroom it may invite some strange assumptions from the others in the bathroom. The noise level should be as low as possible so it is less likely to be heard by others who might assume you are doing something in the stall besides cleaning your bum.

Unfortunately, most manufacturers don’t list the dB levels of the noise so make sure to read the reviews carefully while looking out for how loud it is.

Bottom Line

An electric travel bidet is an absolute must if you have problems like hemorrhoids or would rather not use toilet paper for whatever reason. They are easier to use than a non electric and usually have better water pressure, too. Hopefully, this list has helped you make a decision about which one is best for you.

Review of Brondell GoSpa Travel Bidet

Cons to consider, the bottom line, hear me out, everyone needs a bidet in their life. this $10 portable one has the lowest cost to entry and is great for travel..

  • Cleaning with a bidet feels more hygienic and eco-friendly than using toilet paper alone.
  • At $10, the Brondell GoSpa Travel Bidet is an affordable way to clean with water while traveling.
  • It takes up little room in my carry-on, and I can adjust the pressure and nozzle position.

Insider Today

I was introduced to the bidet life about seven years ago when friends gifted me this cheap, basic bidet (such thoughtful friends). I was skeptical at first. Yet, once I discovered how much easier and less abrasive it is than toilet paper alone, I was a quick convert. Eventually I became such a fan that I went on to author our guide to the best bidet .

Now, after many years testing 30+ bidets, I must wash with water. Unfortunately, bidets are not common in American public restrooms and hotels. Fortunately, I can easily bring a bidet with me, thanks to the Brondell GoSpa Travel Bidet.

what is travel bidet

The GoSpa is easy to use. It's essentially an ergonomically designed water bottle with a spray nozzle. Anyone who has used a peri bottle (popular for cleaning after giving birth) will recognize the design. To use it, you first fill the 400-milliliter bottle with water from a bathroom faucet. I like it warm, but you can use whatever temperature you prefer.

Once the bottle is full, screw on the nozzle. When you're ready, turn the bidet upside-down, point the nozzle where you want to clean, and squeeze.

A bidet must be able to send water right where you want it and have adjustable pressure so you can achieve your ideal comfort level. The Brondell GoSpa Travel Bidet checks both of these boxes. Since you hold the bidet, you can direct the stream. To increase the pressure, you squeeze the bottle harder.

I like how compact the Brondell GoSpa is. It's about 8 inches long and 3 inches in diameter. I store it in my carry-on bag, so I don't forget to pack it.

After each use, I use soap and water to clean the bidet, then I wash my hands. I like that the travel bag is breathable and dries quickly, so it doesn't attract bacteria and odors.

The GoSpa features a hole in the bottom to help with water flow. However, when the full bottle is nozzle-up, it may leak. I haven't experienced more than a few drops leaking, but you may want to be careful where you set the full bottle. Also, store the bottle empty between uses.

The Brondell GoSpa Travel Bidet is no substitute for a bidet that attaches to your toilet. It lacks the strong pressure of attachments and doesn't have cool features, like seat warming or warm air drying.

My wife loves bidets even more than I do. Yet, she refuses to try the travel bidet. She's concerned about debris splashing back onto the GoSpa. I have not seen this happen in my years of using it, though, and I always clean the bidet with soap and water after each use.

At $10, you don't have much to lose by trying the Brondell GoSpa Travel Bidet . It's a good introduction before moving on to something fancier, like the options in our guide to the best bidet .

If you're an old pro like me, the travel bidet is your chance to enjoy bidet life while on the road.

Pros: Affordable, easy to use and clean, comes with travel bag, fits easily in a carry-on, effortless pressure and nozzle position adjustments

Cons: May leak, not as powerful as bidet attachments, requires an open mind

On-the-go clean: Introducing the travel bidet.

Posted by Brian Inami on Aug 31st 2023

side by side comparison of all Brondell GoSpa Travel Bidet variations.

Let’s start with the obvious: we’re big bidet fans here at Brondell. They’re way cleaner than the alternative (looking at you, toilet paper)—and because they can help reduce TP use, they’re great for the environment too.

But as beneficial as bidet washing is, there’s just one issue—you can’t take a bidet with you, right?

Actually, you can—allow us to introduce you to the travel bidet.

What is a travel bidet?

Travel bidets—a.k.a. portable bidets—are designed as easy-to-carry bottles equipped with a special nozzle, so you can wash on the go.

How do they work? Just fill the travel bidet bottle with water. When you need a wash, squeeze the bottle and the nozzle delivers the refreshing, clean wash you get with your home bidet. After you’re done, empty it out, let it air dry, and pack it away. Nice and simple.

Benefits of travel bidets.

Traveling with a bidet is a game-changer. If you’re “bidet faithful” like us, it’s hard to go back to toilet paper when you’re out and about. But with a travel bidet, you can have a fresh, sustainable cleaning experience with you wherever you go.

So who can benefit from having a travel bidet? Well, just about anyone on the go—but we recommend one especially if you fall into one of the following groups.

The outdoor enthusiasts.

woman with backpack hiking in woods.

Travel bidets are tailor-made for outdoor adventure. If you enjoy the planet like we do , you know it’s a challenge to stay clean when you’re out in the elements.

A travel bidet solves many of these problems. Travel bidets get you cleaner than toilet paper, and they're more eco-friendly than disposable wipes, many of which are not biodegradable. That makes bidets the more sustainable alternative, which is great for Leave No Trace practices .

Use a travel bidet for backpacking, camping, hiking, or any other outdoor activity that you love.

The travel lovers.

what is travel bidet

For the globetrotters, road-trippers, and all other adventurers, having a portable bidet for travel can be a lifesaver. It’s not guaranteed that your hotel, homestay (i.e. Airbnb), or other preferred accommodation will have a bidet, which is why we advise you BYOB (bring your own bidet). It’s like bringing a piece of home away from home—like a favorite scarf, fragrance, or pair of walking shoes.

Travel bidets are great in public bathrooms too, saving you from having to rely on toilet paper that may or may not be there.

New moms and their little ones.

orange camper van driving along red rock lined dessert highway.

For new moms with recovering bodies, postpartum care is incredibly important for proper healing. That's why many experts recommend the use of a peri bottle , which you fill with warm water and squeeze to provide a gentle wash while using the restroom. Sound familiar? You guessed it—a travel bidet makes an excellent peri bottle, and can be used interchangeably.

Our GoSpa travel bidets.

OK, we’ve convinced you. So now you’re probably wondering what the best travel bidet is.

There are plenty of options on the market, but our GoSpa line is great for all budgets and needs. Here's a quick breakdown of each travel bidet in our lineup:

mother with baby.

GoSpa Essential : Simple and cost-effective, it’s everything you need in a travel bidet.

GoSpa Advanced : With a nozzle that retracts between uses, it’s a great cleaning experience in a sleek package.

GoSpa Collapsible : Loaded with features, its retractable nozzle and collapsible design makes it super packable.

Stay clean wherever you are.

Travel bidets are a great tool to have when you’re missing your home bidet. Whether you use this type of bidet for camping and the outdoors, for keeping clean during your travels, or for convenient postpartum care, you can always travel with a portable wash on hand and keep refreshed and clean.

Table of Contents

Dual-pressure electric travel bidet.

what is travel bidet

This portable travel bidet is electric and offers two power settings. In turn, this makes it very convenient for a variety of bathroom situations. Especially since you will get the power you need without the fatigue of any manual squeezing. We also like that the size isn’t too large either, so it can easily fit in a purse or fanny pack.

It’s also important to note that this is the 2nd generation of this travel bidet. In effect, the manufacturer has increased the waterproof capacity of the device so that it is easier to clean. So that is a huge plus!

  • Size: 7.36″ x 2.95″ x 2.44 “
  • Weight: 9.59 oz
  • Capacity: 140 ml
  • Power: 2 AAA batteries

Portable Bidet with Travel Bag

what is travel bidet

Featured on Shark Tank in Germany, this travel bidet has become a hit. We love this soft silicon bottle that makes applying the manual pressure that works best for your situation easy. Plus, you can rest easy knowing the plastic is BPA-free. The nozzle is also at an ideal and ergonomic angle with an effective amount of spray nozzles.

Another great feature of this bidet bottle is that it comes with a carrying case. This helps make it a bit more discreet and convenient to use while traveling.

  • Size:  1.97″ x 2.36″ x 11.02″
  • Weight:  3.52 oz
  • Capacity: 300 ml
  • Power: Manual

Mini Travel Bidet

what is travel bidet

TOTO is a well-known Japanese toilet company. And this portable bidet from TOTO aligns with the usual high-quality design and functionality you expect from their products. Bidets are so common in Japan, and they have had time to perfect everything from the nozzle and spray all the way to the convenient compactness.  Basically, if you want an experience from your travel bidet, this one is for you. It feels nice and looks nice/discreet as well.

We love that there are two power settings, for a variety of uses. Plus, it runs on a single battery.

Note: This listing we’ve linked to is for the Japanese version, in order to save you money. This means the box and instructions are not in English, but the images on the instructions are very self-explanatory. Or you can find images of the English instructions in the listing to reference.

  • Size: 2.64″ x 1.85″
  • Weight: 9.52 oz
  • Power: 1 AA battery

Versatile Bottle Cap Bidet

what is travel bidet

If you’re looking for the smallest, lightest and most discreet portable bidet, this one is for you. The unique design allows you to turn most any plastic bottle into your new bidet. Simply fill the bottle up with water and replace the cap with this bidet bottle cap. And there you go, you’re ready to freshen up!

The narrow stream that is created with this cap is very effective, and the design of the cap overall makes it very durable. We also love how easy this bidet is to clean and pack away while traveling.

  • Size:  1.22″ x 1.54″
  • Weight: 0 .49 oz
  • Power: Manual (needs a plastic bottle)

Gentle Ergonomic Travel Bidet

what is travel bidet

We like this portable travel bidet for more gentle needs. The spray nozzle is designed as more of a shower than other bidets that may be more like a power washer. The bottle is also angled nicely to make sure that only the parts you are wanting to rinse are getting wet. So your hands and legs are safer from inadvertent sprays of water.

This travel bidet also comes with a very convenient travel case to help make it more discreet when traveling, which we love.

  • Size: 9.41″ x 3.31″ x 3.27″
  • Weight: 4 oz
  • Capacity: 400 ml

Bidet seats are one of those luxuries you can live happily without until you realize what you're missing. My first encounter came at a ramen spot on the West Coast of the US that had imported a high-end Toto washlet from Japan , where they've been a part of daily life for decades. I might have been an early adopter, but bidets are getting more common in the US. Toto’s American sales doubled in the first quarter of 2020 and have continued to climb since. (The pandemic and the infamous toilet paper outage surely played a role.) But maybe more people are starting to realize that American bathroom habits are … gross. Think about it: When you get something on you that smells foul and is full of germs, do you want to wash it off or smear it off with a piece of paper?

OK, I convinced you. So what should you buy? Never fear. The WIRED team has swapped out plenty of toilet seats in search of the best bidets. We spent at least one week testing each model—some for far longer—and managed the installations ourselves without the help of a professional plumber. We've got budget bidets, bidets with heated seats, and ones that automatically open up, happily inviting you to empty your bowels. We've got your bum covered.

Updated November 2023: We've added the new flagship from Toto, added a SmartBidet model with instant heating, and added an accessory that's a must-have for anyone installing their bidet in a tight space. We've also removed Brondell as a pick, and explain why.

Special offer for Gear readers: Get a 1-year subscription to WIRED for $5 ($25 off) . This includes unlimited access to WIRED. com and our print magazine (if you'd like). Subscriptions help fund the work we do every day.

Think of the shape. Most American home toilets come in one of two standard sizes: round or elongated. A round toilet bowl is 16.5 inches long while an elongated bowl is about 18.5. The bidets on this list are generally made for one or the other. Measure twice, buy once. All bidets we reviewed are attachments that take the place of the seats on existing toilets, but there are also toilets with built-in bidet seats.

Electric seat or simple sprayer?  The bidets on this list are either whole seats that you attach and connect to an AC outlet or, in the case of Tushy, a sprayer that mounts below your existing seat and taps into your water lines. The seat-top bidets are generally more expensive and have more features, but they also require electricity. You must have a shock-blocking GFCI-protected outlet within a few feet of the toilet to use them safely. The Tushy doesn't heat the water, which will be at room temperature. The cheaper electric bidets we've used typically start with a quick burst of room-temperature water that quickly gives way to warm water. The best bidest—typically with a price to match—start by spraying warm water and will allow you to control the temperature within a few degrees. Most electric bidets also have fans which will help dry you off, but you'll probably still want to have a few squares of toilet paper handy for drying.

What's your budget? You can get an attachment that fits on your current seat and taps into the cold water line filling your toilet for about $100. Some high-end bidet attachments can cost $2,000. The sweet spot tends to be at a price point between $500 and $1,000, where you get a sturdy seat with nice features but without over-the-top extras like voice commands (yes, really) and a backup battery.

Best Bidet for Most People

After a decade of happily using Toto washlets, I was surprised to find that my favorite bidet came from Wisconsin-based Kohler. The C3 455 looks sleek and is several hundred bucks cheaper than Totos, and it has the same extra features, including backup buttons on the seat itself and a UV sanitization light . The sprayer and dryer work well and will leave you feeling fresh and clean after use. The blue UV nightlight is a game changer for using the bathroom in the wee hours too. The seat is comfortable and sturdy, and the minimalist design with almost no branding allows it to blend in anywhere. Installation is easy, and some may find the included stainless steel splitter you use to attach the bidet and toilet to your water supply more trustworthy than the plastic splitters included with the Toto.

There are some negatives. For starters, the controls aren't super intuitive. There are five water settings controlled by one button—I could never tell whether I was making the water hotter or cooler. The placement of the hose and power plug in the middle of the right side of the seat instead of the back is also awkward, and the magnet on the remote isn't strong, and you may worry about it falling off.

Best High-End Bidet

The S7A is the new flagship model from Toto, the Japanese bidet maker that invented the category. The S7A takes over the mantle from the S550e and bears a strong resemblance to its predecessor, which we have also tested, offering most of the same features at a similar price. Toto has upgraded the remote and slimmed the profile down to an impressive 4 inches of height. You could easily mistake the S7A for a regular toilet seat—at least until the lid lifts and the nightlight clicks on, when the device senses your presence in the bathroom.

The controls work in the same intuitive way as other Toto washlets, with buttons to adjust the position, intensity, and angle of the sprayer. There is also a button to make the spray oscillate. The controller now allows pre-programming for four people instead of two. If there's any weak point on the S7A—and this is a stretch, this bidet is nearly perfect—it's that the drying fan seems a little weaker than on the previous model, perhaps due to design compromises made when shaving down the height.

Toto has also improved what was already a great system for pre-misting the bowl to lessen the required cleaning. The S7A uses the company's system for making electrolyzed water, which uses a mild electrical charge to turn the chloride in municipal tapwater into a slightly alkaline substance that is an effective cleaner. It's a wildly effective tool—when I swap a Toto with EWATER+ for another bidet in my testing I'm always amazed at the difference over a week. You could likely get away with not scrubbing this bowl for months at a time.

If you've got the money for the best bidet on the market right now, the S7A is a great buy. Given Toto's impressive track record of reliability (I had my previous Washlet for a decade) it's a solid investment.

This Moen electric bidet came with an overwhelmingly big manual, but after watching a YouTube video , the installation was pretty easy and took less than 20 minutes. The seat does not automatically lift up, but that's the only feature it's missing. It has it all—temperature controls for the seat, water, and dryer, where you can change it from cool, lukewarm, and warm. There's also a night light, along with varying water pressures and nozzle positions. There are even backup buttons on the side of the seat in case the remote dies at the worst time. The highest water pressure setting is a little choppy, and my wife and I both wish we could adjust the nozzle a tiny bit more, but we've been thoroughly happy not relying on toilet paper anymore.

You can mount the remote holster onto your wall, and the remote sits in the cradle, with a bit of magnetism to keep it in place. It's super intuitive to use, and there are beeps that change the tone to indicate when you're already at the highest or lowest setting. Speaking of, the bidet does beep when you sit down on it. I've seen some customers complain about this, but I've been using it since July and barely even register the sound. — Julian Chokkattu

A Cheaper Electric Bidet

The Bidetmega 400 ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) packs a lot of features into a bidet that often costs under $500. WIRED reviewer Parker Hall says it awes every visitor who enters the tiny bathroom in his home. The high-end, heated (both seat and spray) bidet is friendly and easy to use, plus it has a night light so you don't need to blast your eyes with harsh bathroom lighting for a late-night tinkle. Three seat and water temps (cold, medium, and medium-hot) allow you to customize your experience à-la-commode, with front and rear spray options for the ladies. The remote is easy to use and intuitive, so you don't need an instruction manual.

The Bidetmega comes up short, however, in its chunkier size. It’s not nearly as sleek as others on this list. The build quality also isn't as sturdy as those from legacy fixture-makers like Kohler and Toto.

What Is 5G Home Internet? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

For Unlimited Warm Water on a Budget

There are a few things about SmartBidet's SB-3000 that betray its status as a mid-range option from an upstart brand. This is the loudest bidet I've tested and, despite the noise, has the least effective fan. I love the design of the controller that hangs with the help of a magnetic block, and having quick controls on the side is always nice, but the controller's prompts are not especially intuitive and something about a “turbo” mode for a bidet sprayer is disconcerting. Also, an auto-lifting seat is a nice feature to have once you get into the $500 range.

The trade-off is that after a very short burst of cooler water you have an unlimited supply of warm water that's heated on demand. The sprayer works very well (turbo mode is great, as it turns out!) meaning this bidet does what bidets are meant to do as well as any, and for longer than most.

TUSHY Classic 3.0 Bidet

Best Budget Bidet (Nonelectric)

The Tushy is minimal in both its setup and features. It doesn’t require hot water or an electrical outlet, so it’s a great choice for anyone who doesn't have an outlet in the bathroom. Even with simple controls—it has a single knob for water pressure—it’s a great bidet that packs a lot of water power. It comes with a few different colors and knob finishes to best fit your bathroom (though we’d be shocked if anyone found the blue or pink a perfect match to their toilet).

Since it’s nonelectric, there's no warm air dryer. After a year of use, WIRED reviewer Nena Farrell says the Tushy is showing some cracks on the rotating flanges inside of the housing (which you’d only see if you removed it), and the foam cushion surrounding those flanges is falling out. But it still works great.

Washlet C5 bidet

Another Good Bidet

We'll continue to test more bidets as they find their way into our bathrooms, but not every one of them deserves a spot above. Given the current competition, this one doesn't quite make the grade.

Toto C5 for $400 : This is the successor to the C200, which is what I happily used for a decade. The C5 has a great reputation—other sites have named it the best bidet—with a strong record of reliability. But after testing the new class of bidet seats on the market, I was left underwhelmed. For $400 or more, you’re getting only the most basic features. The pre-mist function wasn't effective, and my toilet required far more cleaning. Without a night light, I had to turn on my bathroom lights and blind myself to pee in the middle of the night. The C5 is a fine classic bidet, but you can do better these days.

Brondell BL97 bidet

Avoid These Bidets

Not every bidet is a winner. Stick with our recommendations above.

Brondell Swash BL97 for $282 : WIRED reviewer Nena Farrell swapped her personal bidet out for this entry-level electric model from Brondell, and she was not a fan. The seat is tiny, and the water is weak and slow-reacting compared to bidets like the Tushy. The BL97 hose also fit poorly on her toilet and caused a leak. It does, however, have a warm seat, and the controls work well, albeit slowly.

Brondell Thinline T44 for $700 : Nena also tried this bidet, and while she originally liked it and recommended it for its thin profile and easy installation, the hardware is also thin and snapped after only a few months of use. You can get our top pick from Kohler for the same price, or the Tushy for something nearly as discreet and easy to install.

THU9090R Extension WASHLET Connection for Bidets

A Must-Have Bidet Accessory for Tight Spaces

I replaced the old-fashioned round toilet at my 80-year-old house with a modern elongated toilet when I started testing bidets for WIRED. In order to fit a longer seat in the same space, I ended up with a taller tank that sits snug to the wall. If you're installing an elongated toilet in an older home, chances are you will be making the same decision. And if you are, please save yourself hours of headache by buying this short hose extension by BIXFE.

You probably need to order it on Amazon because if your local hardware stores are like mine (and the Amazon reviews on this product suggests they are!) they don't have this simple hose in the right size for a bidet. I even went to a dedicated plumbing supply warehouse and came up empty after crudely drawing what I needed on a sheet of paper for a perplexed Midwestern man.

The THU9090R hose has male and female ends of the same size. It screws onto the inflow valve coming out of the bottom of your toliet tank and offers the same connection 6 or 9 inches away, giving you some space to maneuver when connecting the T-shaped splitter that will divert water to your bidet seat. If you have any doubts about having enough space to get your seat on and off, spend the $17.

TUSHY Classic 3.0 bidet attached to toilet

How to Install a Bidet

If you’re handy and your toilet is a few inches from the wall, a bidet installation can be done in less than 15 minutes. Follow your model's instructions, but you're essentially disconnecting the water hose that feeds your toilet tank and attaching a splitter that sends some of the water to the seat and the rest to the tank. In the case of Toto and our other top picks, the seat heats that water. If your toilet sits snugly against the wall, it will be a tougher job. (This short YouTube video takes you through the complete process on a Toto.) Then, it’s a matter of removing the bolts that attach the seat to the toilet and affixing the new plastic mounting plate. The bidet will click on and off this plate. That's it!

Installing these toilet-top bidets is a job anyone can do, but most people would probably prefer to do it only once, given that there are toilet water and bath towels involved. That just means you want to choose wisely. You can also hire a plumber or TaskRabbit to install these seats, but it will cost more.

If you're worried about your electricity bill, you can always plug your bidet into a smart plug and shut off power to the whole thing when it's not in use. This might eliminate certain features though, like a heated seat right when you plop down.

Best Overall Portable Bidet

  • CULOCLEAN Bottle Top Travel Bidet

Price: $9.99

culoclean bottle top travel bidet

✅ Inexpensive

✅ Lightweight

❌ Pressure on the lower side

  • Weight: 0.42 oz
  • Type: Nozzle
  • Material: Plastic

We carried the CuloClean Bottle Top Travel Bidet for 1000s of miles on the Continental Divide Trail. We love how easily this bidet attaches to any water bottle making it our best overall portable bidet. At $10, the CuloClean is the least expensive portable bidet sprayer we tested.

We like that it comes in a range of bright colors, making it easier to find in the woods. We love how tightly these fit into just about any water bottle. We wish you could get just a little more pressure with this bidet, but that’s a problem with portable bidets in general. We found using a cheap, easily crushable water bottle helps with getting more pressure. At 0.42 ounces, this is very lightweight and easily packable too.

Best Ultralight Portable Bidet

Holey hiker backpacking bidet.

Price: $12.50

holey hiker backpacking bidet

✅ Ultralight

❌ Less intuitive to use

❌ Disappointing cleaning power

  • Weight: 0.24 oz
  • Material: ABS-like resin

The Holey Hiker Backpacking Bidet is the lightest portable bidet we tested, making it our top choice if weight is your biggest concern. This bidet is designed to work with a standard plastic water bottle and is ultra-packable. We love that these come with an arrow so you can easily see where you’re aiming. The arrow isn’t painted black, making it hard to see, but a permanent marker quickly fixed that problem for us.

We found it doesn’t fit on bottles with a smaller opening, like crushable water bottles, which was slightly disappointing. Because of this, it was harder for us to get high pressure to ensure a good clean.

Easiest Bidet with Best Cleaning Power

  • BRONDELL GS-70 GoSpa Travel Bidet

Price: $14.99

brondell gs-70 gospa travel bidet

✅ Best cleaning power

✅ Easiest to use

  • Weight: 2.21 oz
  • Type: Bottle and Nozzle

The Brondell GS-70 Gospa travel bidet is the only portable bidet we tested that came with a dedicated bottle. It also fits on a Smart Water or similar bottle, but the bottle it comes with has an “airlock” feature we really like. This airlock on the bottom allows it to easily refill with air in between squeezes. This air intake valve does help with getting consistent pressure with every squeeze.

The drawback to using this dedicated bottle is that it’s the heaviest portable bidet sprayer we tested. At 2.21 ounces, it’s 1.5 ounces heavier than the next closest option. But if you’re looking for the easiest, no-fuss portable bidet with great cleaning power, the Brondell GS-70 Gospa is our top pick.

The Other Noteworthy Models

Uyicoo portable travel bidet.

Price: $13.99

uyicoo portable travel bidet

✅ Good spray angle

❌ Awkward to aim

  • Weight: 0.71 oz
  • Material: Food-grade silicone

The Uyicoo Portable Travel Bidet is a nozzle-type bidet that fits on any water bottle. At 0.71 ounces, this is the heaviest of the nozzle-type bidets we reviewed. Overall, it’s light and small, but there are smaller portable bidets out there.

During testing, we liked that this bidet pointed slightly up when attached to a bottle held upside down. We thought this was the perfect angle. However, the taller nozzle was a bit awkward to aim correctly. We found that we ended up using more water with this bidet since our aim was consistently off.

HYGIENNA Solo Travel Bidet

hygienna solo travel bidet

✅ Easy to aim

❌ Expensive

❌ Doesn’t fit on crushable bottles

  • Weight: 0.53 oz
  • Material: Plastic, Rubber

The Hygienna Solo Travel Bidet is very similar to the Uyicoo Travel Bidet but 25% lighter. We like that this bidet is angled at less than 90 degrees, which makes aiming easier. We found this bidet provided adequate pressure with a good squeeze of the water bottle. But as with most portable bidets, we had to squeeze pretty hard to get ultra-high pressure.

Also, this nozzle doesn’t fit onto the more crushable, smaller opening water bottles that are easier to squeeze. At $18, this is the most expensive backpacking bidet we reviewed, making it hard to choose this over other, better-performing portable bidet sprayers.

Key Factors To Consider When Choosing

The price of backpacking bidets is relatively inexpensive, ranging from $10 to $18. Simple, nozzle-only bidets cost the least. More expensive bidets come with a water bottle or are engineered to have an easier-to-use spray angle and pressure.

Portable bidet that provides the greatest value:

  • HOLEY HIKER Backpacking Bidet The Original Squirt

Affordable portable bidet:

Premium portable bidet (most expensive):

  • HYGIENNA SOLO Travel Bidet

Most portable bidets are a nozzle-only attachment that fits on any water bottle. We recommend these weigh less than an ounce. Bidets that come with a specific water bottle are heavier, but easier to use.

Since you won’t have to carry as much (or any!) toilet paper, you’ll be saving weight by adding a bidet to your backpacking poop kit.

The lightest portable bidet:

Ease of Use and Cleaning Power

You want your backpacking bidet to be easy to use to ensure a good clean and avoid spraying water all over the place. The most important factors to consider are spray angle and spray pressure.

A good spray angle avoids awkwardly holding or twisting your arm to get into the area you want to clean. You’ll want a strong water pressure to clean after you poo. This is especially important if you aren’t bringing any toilet paper. The easiest portable bidets to use come with a specific bottle designed to keep a strong flow.

The easiest-to-use portable bidets:

Packability

Portable bidets that are only a nozzle are the most packable, roughly the size of a cork. They may require you to carry an extra water bottle if you want a separate drinking and bidet bottle. Portable bidets that come with a built-in bottle are larger but may be easier to use. We recommend choosing the smallest bidet that still gives you an adequate clean.

Portable bidets are made of either plastic or silicone. Both should last a long time, but plastic tends to last longer. With plastic bidets, the biggest point of failure is the o-rings. These rings are used to create a tight seal and can crack over time. Fortunately, most hardware stores with a good selection of o-rings can help you find a replacement if needed.

hiker digging cathole

There are two kinds of portable bidets: just a nozzle and a bottle with an attached nozzle.

Nozzles can attach to most plastic water bottles. These are the lightest and most packable kind of portable bidet. You’ll have to carry a water bottle to use them, but they’re designed to work with most standard disposable plastic water bottles. We recommend bringing a separate “dirty bottle” to avoid using your clean water bottle for both drinking and your bidet.

A portable bidet with a nozzle and a specific bottle is heavier and bulkier. However, the bottle that comes with these is usually better suited to getting that high-pressure spray to really clean yourself. If you aren’t worried about weight or space savings, these are a better option for cleaning power and ease of use.

You need high water pressure to adequately clean yourself. The higher the pressure, the better. Look for a portable bidet set up with a small nozzle to get the highest pressure. You also want a bottle that is easy to squeeze. The harder you can squeeze the bottle, the higher the pressure.

WHAT IS A PORTABLE BIDET?

A bidet is a device used to spray water on yourself in order to clean yourself after going to the bathroom. A portable bidet works as any other bidet would, but this kind you can bring anywhere, including the woods. Water is better than anything else for cleaning up after using the bathroom. Do you really think that dry toilet paper is getting your butt clean? We don’t, either.

Most portable bidets are simply nozzles that you can attach to any water bottle. You’re already going to be carrying a water bottle while backpacking. Now that bottle can have another use. Some portable bidets come with a bottle designed to be used with a nozzle or hose attachment. Those can work even better than a nozzle that attaches to any bottle, but they are heavier and bulkier.

culoclean bidet into water bottle

A portable bidet is much lighter than that roll of toilet paper or baggy of wet wipes you’re currently carrying. It is also the easiest way to follow Leave No Trace principles. Packing out toilet paper is necessary to actually dispose of that waste properly. So, it’s easier to not use toilet paper at all. A backpacking bidet setup only requires water, a bottle, a bidet nozzle, soap, and (optionally) something to dry with.

HOW TO USE A PORTABLE BIDET?

  • Find a discreet place at least 200 feet away from water, trails, or campsites.
  • Dig a cathole. It should be at least 6 inches deep.
  • After you’ve done your business, use sticks or rocks to do the “heavy lifting” in the clean-up process.
  • Take your portable bidet in one hand and lean over slightly, positioning your butt over the cathole.
  • Make sure the nozzle is aimed in the right direction and firmly squeeze the bidet bottle to spray water at the area that needs cleaning.

image showing how to use a bidet

  • After you’ve sprayed enough water that it feels clean, use a small amount of toilet paper to dry yourself and check to make sure you’re clean. If you aren’t clean yet, use some more water. You can also use a bandana or Kula Cloth to dry yourself off, but don’t use this to dry anything else if you’re drying your butt with it.
  • Now, bury your poop. The water from your bidet rinse will help it decompose faster.
  • Clean your hands with biodegradable soap or hand sanitizer, or both.

HOW TO MAKE A PORTABLE BIDET? (DIY BIDET)

There are several ways to make a portable bidet yourself. We’ll outline a few here.

Backcountry bidet: Don’t want to carry a portable bidet but still want to clean yourself with water? Try the “backcountry bidet”!

Lab wash bottle hose and cap on a Smart Water bottle: The hose and cap from a lab wash bottle can be attached to a Smart Water bottle or another similar water bottle. This makes a great portable bidet, especially because the curved hose makes aiming at the right spot a cinch. If space isn’t at a premium you can use the bottle, too.

Drinking straw and bottle cap: A flexible drinking straw and a plastic bottle cap can be made into a portable bidet.

  • Cut the straw so there is an equal length of tube on both ends of the bend.
  • Drill a hole in the plastic bottle cap that is just smaller than the outer diameter of the straw.
  • Take a short bit of straw and cut it lengthwise so you can roll it into a smaller tube than the other piece of straw you have.
  • Find something to fit around this small piece of straw to work as a gasket inside the large piece of straw with a bend, a piece of silicone from a cookpot handle or a strip of electrical tape will work.
  • Jam this smaller piece of straw into one end of the bent straw.
  • Stick the other end of the bent straw into the plastic cap with a hole drilled in it.
  • Now, test out your bidet. If you made the opening small enough you should get good enough pressure to clean yourself.

Poking a hole into a bottle lid: Poking a small hole into a plastic bottle lid of a crushable disposable water bottle also works, but you’ll see that aiming it can be tricky.

Using Holey Hiker Backpacking Bidet.

How to clean a portable bidet?

A portable bidet should be cleaned with soap and warm water. You can do this periodically in towns or at home after a backpacking trip. There is usually no need to clean a portable bidet after each use.

How sanitary is a portable bidet?

A portable bidet is much more sanitary than using dry toilet paper to clean yourself. You’ll want to clean your hands after you use a bidet, but it is really quite sanitary.

What do you dry with after using a bidet?

You can dry with a small amount of toilet paper, a bandana, or even a Kula Cloth after using a bidet. Some people will even just allow themselves to air dry after using a bidet.

Even before the pandemic TP shortage, our experts had tested a slew of bidet seats to help advise the early-adopter crowd. Bidets have also always been a helpful "aging in place" bathroom upgrade, since they make it possible for people of all ages and abilities to take care of business on their own. Over the last five years, we've tested and reviewed 25 bidet seats , including electric and manual models, plus bidet attachments and travel bidets that you can take on the road.

As the market continues to expand, our experts are seeing a wider range of styles, functionality and pricing. Manual models can cost less than $100 and are DIY-friendly, while a full-featured electric bidet might set you back $1,000 or more and could require professional installation.

After reading our full reviews below, head to the end of this guide for more details on how our testers chose the best bidet seats, plus everything you need to know to find the right model for your home. Also see our other expert advice on bathroom upgrades, including the best traditional toilets to pair with your new bidet seat.

The Japanese manufacturer Toto invented the bidet-style toilet seat in 1980, and the company remains a market leader today with a reputation for innovation and reliability. Our experts have tested several iterations of the brand’s flagship model, the Washlet, including the recently launched S7A.

It’s our top overall bidet on the strength of its easy installation and feature-rich performance. The heated seat, night-light and water temperature controls were favorites with our testers, as was the pre-mist feature that helps keep waste from sticking to the bowl. “I also love how easy the seat is to remove for a deep clean,” noted one tester, who installed the S7A as part of a bathroom renovation. Several design tweaks to the S7A give it a particularly sleek, streamlined profile compared with other bidets we’ve tested. We also like that the S7A's seamless seat design minimizes gaps and crevices for dirt and grime to collect.

Make no mistake: The Toto S7A is a luxury bidet seat with the price tag to prove it. In addition to the steep upfront cost, it uses more energy and water than a traditional toilet seat, as is the case with all premium bidets. But you’ll get some of that back in reduced toilet paper purchases, and the experience is nothing short of life-changing. Bottom line: If the Toto S7A is in the budget, it’s 100% worth the investment.

If you'd like a bidet that won't break the bank but still comes with a lot bells and whistles, consider this option from BioBidet, another respected name in bidet seats and smart toilets.

Our experts like the fact that you can adjust the temperature of the water and seat, and the BioBidet even features an automatic LED light , helpful for finding your way in the dark. The self-cleaning nozzle is a nice touch, too. "Before and after each use, self-cleaning nozzles run through a sterilization process inside their housing located at the back of the seat, so you don't have to worry about compromised hygiene," says DiClerico.

Compared with the top-rated Toto, you'll give up a few creature comforts with the BioBidet, including a lid that automatically open and closes. Plus, it's a bit bulkier at the back of the seat, which might affect overall comfort, though most users say they got used to it eventually.

Throughout decades of toilet tests at Good Housekeeping, Kohler has earned a reputation for quality, performance and reliability. The manufacturer is bringing the same high standard to bidets, including the standout C3 230 with its sleek design, remote control and wide-ranging functionality.

Our testers especially liked the continuous warm water flow and adjustable settings, including oscillating and pulsating sprays . It also has a heated seat, a drying feature and a self-cleaning spray wand. The built-in odor control was also a hit. "I thought it might be gimmicky but the odor-neutralizing feature works surprisingly well," one tester said. Another lauded the ergonomic design, saying, "Some bidet seats are steeply angled at the back because of the wires needed to heat the seat, and that can make them awkward to sit on, but the C3 230 is really comfortable."

That combination of comfort, performance and aesthetics makes this bidet another top pick, though some tests disliked the night-light. While still an investment, it costs a few hundred dollars less than the top-rated Toto.

Another Good Housekeeping Home Reno Award winner, Bio Bidet's Discovery bidet seat earned positive reviews from the three expert testers who evaluated it over four months of in-home testing. They found the seat relatively easy to install, though getting the mounting brackets just right took some doing, so be prepared for a little trial and error.

Once the bidet was secured, testers praised the Discovery DLS's low-profile design, especially compared with other bidets we've reviewed , some of which are so bulky at the back that users are actually pitched forward when they're in a seated position.

Additional features of note include an adjustable nozzle spray connected to an unlimited supply of warm water, a heated seat, a night-light and a built-in air dryer. "I love the self-closing lid," added GH Product Analyst Lynn Redmile . "It solves a huge pet peeve in my house full of guys!"

If there's not an electric outlet near the toilet, you'll need to pay an electrician a few hundred bucks to put one in. Another way to go is to opt a manual bidet, like this top-performing model from Kohler. Its standout features include three nozzle options (soft, medium and intense) as well as a quiet-close lid and seat. "Manual bidets are definitely a different animal from electric models, but not having to contend with a power source makes them a great option for some consumers, including renters," says DiClerico.

To operate, you simply twist the end of the lever to extend the nozzle out to the desired position, then pull up on the handle to manually pump water (which is not heated) out of the nozzle as many times as needed. Our experts say Kohler's affordable manual bidet is best thought of as a complement to toilet paper, unlike full-featured electric models that provide thorough cleansing and air drying, eliminating the need for toilet paper altogether.

Bidet attachments are even less of a commitment than manual bidets, since they work with your existing toilet and toilet seat. Tushy's Spa 3.0 bidet attachment comes with a temperature control function and a variety of spray settings, plus a self-cleaning nozzle. Its versatile design is suitable for round, oval and elongated toilets. Plus, it's available in nine colors.

"The attachment is perfect for people who don't want to change the look or configuration of their current toilet," says DiClerico. It also allows you to connect it to either your toilet's water supply or your sink's, depending on your plumbing configuration (though there is a limited warm water supply).

We also tested the Tushy Classic 3.0 bidet attachment as part of our most recent Good Housekeeping Home Reno Awards . It was a winner, thanks to its simple installation ("lived up to the '10 minutes or less' promise," one tester told us). While the overall experience was not the same as with an electric bidet, Tushy’s beefy knobs make it easy to go from a gentle spritz to a powerful wash that ultimately gets the job done.

Brondell's FreshSpa is an inexpensive bidet attachment without much of a tradeoff. The simple, non-electric bidet sells for under $50 and you can install it yourself using your existing toilet and seat. For control, a scroll button lets you dial in your preferred water pressure. The water draws from your cold-water source, but reviewers swear that it feels cool, not startling.

At this price, many reviewers say they outfitted more than one bathroom in their house with this manual bidet attachment. Note that you should check that your toilet connector, from the water source to the tank, is a flexible hose rather than a rigid pipe before you install this; if not, you'll need an inexpensive flexible toilet connector . It also slightly changes the height of the seat.

How we test bidets

an expert at the good housekeeping institute installs a bidet seat as part of a review

Our analysts start by surveying the current marketplace to identify the bidet seats you’re most likely to find at home centers, bath showrooms, plumbing supply stores and online. They also keep up with the latest trends by attending trade shows and industry events, including the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) .

Since bidet seats are a relatively new category, we haven’t completed Lab tests of all models featured in this round-up. However, we brought our decades of toilet testing to bear by focusing on brands that have proven the most reliable and top-performing. We also included some newer brands that offer promising features or innovations.

Our engineers reviewed the technical data for all models, looking at such factors as power source, seat shape and feature set. In addition, our home product experts did get hands-on with several bidets by installing them in testers’ homes and using them over several weeks, getting a real-world sense of convenience, comfort and other factors related to user experience.

What to look when shopping for the best bidet for your home

linebreak

All the models included in our round-up are top performers, but to figure out which one is the best fit for your bathroom, consider these questions:

✔️ Bidet seat or bidet attachment? A bidet seat is designed to replace your existing toilet seat, while a bidet attachment works in conjunction with the existing seat. Full seats offer the most variety, including electric or manual operation and the full bevy of features. Bidet attachments tend to be the most affordable choice and they're almost always manual, so they're suited to toilets that don't have a nearby electrical outlet.

✔️ Automatic or manual? Most bidet seats are powered by electricity, which means they work with the press of a button. While that offers maximum convenience, it means you need a GFCI-rated outlet within a few feet of the toilet. If an outlet isn’t present, expect to pay an electrician several hundred dollars to put one in. Manual bidets come with a handle or paddle that you tilt down to spray water. They’re less expensive and eliminate the need for an outlet and a cord. But our testers say the overall experience is less luxurious.

Automatic bidets are the most fully featured, including heated seats, night-lights and air drying. They usually come with adjustable water temperature too, which most of our consumer testers say is worth the splurge. "Cold water cleansing is plenty effective, but testers prefer the warm-water experience, especially during colder times of the year," says DiClerico.

✔️ Round or elongated? Those are the two main toilet bowl shapes. If you're going with a full bidet seat, you need to make sure that the model you choose corresponds to the shape of your toilet bowl. If you’re starting from scratch, our tests have found elongated bowls to be a bit more comfortable, while rounded bowls are more space-efficient.

Our engineers also point out that if you have a one-piece toilet, with little to no space between the toilet and tank, some bidet seats won’t fit. Measure the gap between the bowl and tank and check that it meets your bidet’s minimum requirements.

✔️ Tankless or tank? Higher-end bidets often feature a tankless design, meaning they provide an endless supply of heated water. Other models have a reservoir that stores a limited amount of heated water. If the bidet will serve multiple members of your household, and heated water is important (most of our testers say it is), it’s worth springing for a tankless design.

How do you install a bidet?

an expert tests a bidet attachment

It depends on whether you’re putting in a full bidet seat or a bidet attachment. For a full bidet seat , step one is removing the existing seat by unscrewing the seat bolts that anchor it to the toilet.

Then shut off the water to the toilet by turning the valve on the supply line. Install the new connector valve that comes with the bidet seat to the supply line. Secure the bidet seat to the toilet using the provided seat bolts. Finally, connect the bidet to the water supply line and turn the water back on. If it’s an electric bidet seat, plug in the unit and you’re good to go.

To install a bidet attachment , remove the existing toilet seat, then secure the attachment to the toilet with the provided mounting plate. Put the toilet seat back on, as pictured. Most bidet attachments connect to the water supply line in the same manner as a bidet seat.

What is a Portable Bidet?

A portable bidet is an on-the-go version of a bidet, a bathroom fixture resembling a toilet that provides a stream of warm water for personal cleansing instead of bathroom tissue. Bidets are useful for people who suffer from a number of rectal or genital problems, or simply desire a hygienic cleansing after defecation or intercourse. Portable bidets offer the same benefits as a fixture with the added convenience of travel.

Portable bidets have a reservoir that can be filled with either cool or warm water. Different types range from simple squeeze bottles to elaborate battery-operated units. The user fills the reservoir and directs the stream on the desired area. Battery-operated units may come with attachment nozzles to provide an external spray, an internal spray, and a nursing spray for general washing. Hand shower bidets attach to the shower head and are used while bathing.

Doctors often recommend that people with external hemorrhoids not use dry paper for wiping. This can aggravate them and cause bleeding. The portable bidet gently cleanses the anal area so the hemorrhoids can heal. If hemorrhoid sufferers are traveling, they may not have access to a bidet. The ability to take the portable bidet with them can remove any anxiety and discomfort sufferers may have about taking a trip.

Caretakers of bedridden patients can use a portable bidet to help them wash after going to the bathroom. After colorectal surgery or childbirth, a bidet keeps incisions hygienic. If the patient’s home does not have the fixture, the handheld unit is a perfect alternative. Bidets also help people with limited range of motion, such as the elderly and obese, or people who have had surgery on their upper extremities and can not cleanse themselves properly.

Many people like to use a bidet before or after sexual intercourse for extra cleanliness. With a portable bidet, they can go on vacation with their partner and need not worry if their accommodations have the a bidet available. Others like to use a bidet to save money on toilet paper. A dedicated towel can be used to pat dry afterward. The portable bidet is a good alternative if it is too expensive to install a permanent fixture.

A handheld bidet may also be used externally on infants after a diaper change instead of a washcloth. The sanitary stream helps prevent rashes and irritation. Units are sometimes used for feminine hygiene issues or during menstruation. The portable bidet can be a handy supplement to the portable toilet in a camper or travel trailer.
