When the When We Were Young festival returns for its 2024 edition, it looks like fans will be treated to something beyond the traditional performances. Earlier today, promoter Live Nation just dropped a tease (that has since been deleted) that suggested that many of the 2024 performers will be playing full-album sets revisiting some of their classic records. With the lineup now announced, it is in fact a bill of bands mostly playing full-album performances.

The 2024 event returns to the Las Vegas Festival grounds on Oct. 19, 2024 with an outstanding lineup that includes My Chemical Romance , Fall Out Boy , A Day to Remember , Jimmy Eat World , Dashboard Confessional , Pierce the Veil , The Used , Simple Plan , The All-American Rejects and many more.

And as stated, many of those acts will be playing full album sets, led by My Chemical Romance revisiting The Black Parade . You'll also get A Day To Remember playing Homesick , Dashboard Confessional doing Dusk and Summer , Jimmy Eat World playing Bleed American , Pierce the Veil doing Collide with the Sky , Simple Plan performing No Pads, No Helmets, Just Balls , The Used doing In Love and Death , The All-American Rejects playing their self-titled set, Coheed and Cambrian taking on Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV , Underoath doing They're Only Chasing Safety , New Found Glory playing Sticks and Stones and many more.

Other acts on board for the 2024 edition include The Distillers, Mayday Parade, Chiodos, Movements, Bayside, The Maine, Saves the Day, The Wonder Years, The Starting Line, August Burns Red, Thursday, State Champs, Atreyu, Hawthorne Heights, Cartel, Saosin, We the Kings, Pretty Girls Make Graves, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Alesana, L.S. Dunes, Dance Gavin Dance, Motion City Soundtrack, Silverstein, Basement, Sleeping With Sirens, Neck Deep, Cobra Starship, Story of the Year, Say Anything, Four Year Strong, Mom Jeans, Senses Fail, 3OH!3, Anberlin, Armor for Sleep, The Devil Wears Prada, Escape the Fate, Nada Surf, Emery and The Forecast.

The full poster reveals who is playing what and which other bands will be performing at When We Were Young 2024.

Couldn't make it to the second annual When We Were Young Fest in Las Vegas this weekend? Don’t worry, we have all the highlights from this jam-packed festival! As one could expect, the event provided nonstop nostalgia, new tunes, and never-ending energy from millennials who never tire of the pop-punk life. With headlining performances from Green Day and blink-182, plus appearances from Good Charlotte, Yellowcard, Thirty Seconds to Mars and 50+ more, it was a weekend full of surprises. Here are 5 incredible things that happened during When We Were Young weekend:

Tony Hawk performing “Superman” with Goldfinger

Many know “Superman,” arguably one of Goldfinger’s most famous songs, as the theme for the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater video game released in 1999. And not only is the band totally okay with this, but they encouraged it even further by bringing Mr. Hawk himself onstage with them! The skateboarding legend belted out verses alongside John Feldmann for a collaboration that’s stood the test of time. And the audience enjoyed every last second of this punk-rock mashup.

Yellowcard’s live debut and collaborators

It’s safe to say that 2023 is the year of Yellowcard. The group wrapped up their Ocean Avenue 20th anniversary trek just a few months back, and released new music for the first time in seven years! Therefore, Ryan Key and Co. knew they’d have to bring their A-game to When We Were Young, and they definitely didn’t disappoint. The Yellowcard set was a blend of nostalgic-meets-new essentials that had the whole crowd singing along to every song! Between classics like “Ocean Avenue” and “Breathing,” Yellowcard also live-debuted the track “Three Minutes More” from their 2023 EP, Childhood Eyes . They even had a little help from Pierce The Veil frontman, Vic Fuentes! Later on, they went back in time to perform the 2003 hit, “Only One,” with guest vocals from Cassadee Pope
cementing themselves as pop-punk royalty with the best connections.

Guest vocalists galore!

Speaking of surprise guests, there were plenty of them on both days of When We Were Young! Fans got to witness the bonds between these rock bands that have been built up for decades, and it was a beautiful sight. Yellowcard’s Ryan Key sang “Swing Life Away” with Rise Against, adding a melodic element into their hardcore set that fans will never forget. Meanwhile, Tim McIlrath performed “This Is War” alongside Jared Leto and Thirty Seconds to Mars! Some of the more surprising guest stars came out later in the day. Avril Lavigne joined All Time Low for two songs, creating a full-circle moment that started at last year’s When We Were Young. Who remembers when Alex Gaskarth joined Avril’s set in 2022 for a cover of blink-182’s “All The Small Things?” And finally, multiplatinum rapper Lil Wayne joined Good Charlotte for their first performance of “Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous'” since 2019. Talk about 2000s nostalgia!

Song covers from in and out of the genre

This year’s When We Were Young fest catered more to the pop-punk, punk-rock, and alternative enthusiasts. However, there was also more than a bit of musical diversity in these bands’ song covers! Simple Plan delivered a three-song medley including “All Star” by Smash Mouth, Avril Lavigne’s “Sk8er Boi,” and “Mr. Brightside” from The Killers. And then there was Sum 41’s take on Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” which lived up to its name and caused a crowd uproar.

Remember the Punk Goes Pop album series you loved in the Warped Tour era? New Found Glory decided on a “punk goes Disney” angle with their heavy cover of “Let It Go” from Frozen ! Was it random? Sure
but there’s nothing like seeing a circle pit go nuts over a children’s song. Finally, Green Day ended the night with not only their own massive list of hits, but also a snippet of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” for a metal twist on their punk rock prowess.

New songs from the headliners

When We Were Young was a celebration of rock music in all its glory — past, present, and future. And nobody understood the assignment better than the headliners! Green Day and blink-182 both had stacked setlists consisting of tracks from every decade, and that includes the 2020s. Fresh off their 2024 stadium tour announcement , blink-182 played not only timeless tracks, like “All the Small Things,” “What’s My Age Again?,” and “The Rock Show,” but also brand-new tunes. These include “DANCE WITH ME,” “EDGING,” and “ONE MORE TIME” from their ninth album, One More Time
, released just a day before the When We Were Young festival! As for Green Day? They’ve delivered a hearty dose of punk rock since the 1990s, and their When We Were Young set was nothing short of sensational. The show let attendees walk down the “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” as they soaked up their “Holiday” under the Las Vegas sun and bid a bittersweet “Good Riddance” to the 2023 When We Were Young festival. See what we did there? Of course, Green Day also had surprise debut of their new song, “Look Ma, No Brains!,” plus another 2020s track, “The American Dream Is Killing Me.” Billie Joe Armstrong even hinted at a 2024 Green Day tour, which is just fine with us! These new songs from your favorite 90s punk rockers are proof that getting older can be a lot of fun, as was the rest of this marvelous musical weekend.

When We Were Young Festival Gives Warped Tour a Run for Its Money With Bonkers Lineup

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

UPDATE (1/24):  On Monday, LiveNation announced When We Were Young Festival has added a third date, following its first two dates selling out. The third date takes place on Saturday, Oct. 29 and includes the same lineup, with the exception of Alex G replacing Wolf Alice and La Dispute will not be performing on Day Three. Tickets go on sale Monday, Jan. 31.

UPDATE (1/21): On Friday, LiveNation announced that the When We Were Young Festival will now feature a second date with the exact same stacked lineup on Sunday, Oct. 23.

Featuring multiple stages across festival grounds, earlier acts will perform 20- to 30-minute sets while top-billed acts will perform sets that are 45 minutes or longer.

“We have seen a lot of excitement around this festival and we look forward to putting on an incredible event for all of the fans this October,” festival organizers said in a statement, adding that the event is “thoroughly planned.”

Paramore might not be interested in rehashing the past for their upcoming album , but when the three-piece group gets back on stage, it’ll be part of the most mid-2000s meets early-2010s lineups since Warped Tour wrapped in 2019.

The band is slated to headline the emo and rock event When We Were Young Festival on Oct. 22 at Las Vegas Festival Grounds. General sales for When We Were Young Festival begin on Jan. 21 via the official festival website.

Paramore share the headlining bill with My Chemical Romance and are joined front and center on the Hot Topic-core lineup poster by Bring Me the Horizon, A Day to Remember, Avril Lavigne , Bright Eyes, and Jimmy Eat World.

Scattered throughout the rest of the lineup are some of the genre’s long-dormant, once-hit-making acts, including Pierce The Veil, All American Rejects, Boys Like Girls, the Ready Set, 3OH!3, and We the Kings.

Veteran bands are also joined by a number of acts currently setting the pace for the future of pop-punk, including Fueled By Ramen signees Meet Me @ the Altar and TikTokers turned punk-rockers Jxdn, Lil Huddy, and Nessa Barrett.

Earlier this month, Hayley Williams told Rolling Stone that Paramore’s forthcoming album — their first since 2017’s After Laughter  — isn’t a “comeback ‘emo’ record,” but it will have a particular emphasis on guitars. By the time they step on stage in Vegas, their ever-evolving sound will set them apart once more.

The ultimate guide to When We Were Young festival

The emo and pop punk fest returns this weekend with Blink-182, Green Day and more.

Fans sing and dance to My Chemical Romance while they play their song “I’m Not Ok ...

The T-shirts said it all: “Emo’s not dead,” “Make America emo again,” “Every nite is emo nite,” “Sad music.”

And that pretty much encapsulates When We Were Young, where those shirts were spotted last fall.

This weekend, the two-day emo- and pop punk-leaning fest returns to the Las Vegas Festival Grounds after three sold-out shows last October. (The first day was ultimately canceled because of high winds.)

Here’s a paradox, though: How can emos sustain their trademark sadness amid more than 60 bands playing each day, offering the concert equivalent of an all-you-can-eat buffet of pleading vocals, endless breakup songs and tunes that soundtracked many a high school prom circa 2004?

Ah well, you might as well just show up and have a great time. Here’s your guide to doing so:

How to get there

There’s no parking at the venue, and with most of the nearby casinos limiting their parking garages to guests only during the festival, you’ll have to rideshare or perhaps attach a household cooling device to your back and parachute into the place “Fan Man”-style. (Go ahead and laugh, it’s been done before in these parts.)

Pro tip for locals: Park at a casino at the south end of the Strip (MGM Grand, Flamingo, Horseshoe) and take the monorail to the Sahara right across the street from the venue.

What should you wear?

Rhetorical question.

We all know you’re going to come dressed head to toe in black, looking like one of Something Corporate’s piano keys incarnate.

Just remember, it starts getting cold at night right about now.

At When We Were Young last year, temperatures dipped into the high 40s on the fest’s opening weekend, causing some fans to crowd around a fire-spewing octopus art installation for heat on Sunday night.

At a festival that’s all about wearing your heart on your sleeve, it might be wise to make sure those sleeves are attached to a hoodie.

How will you see every band you want to see?

Well, you might not.

With so many bands playing on five stages, often simultaneously, there are bound to be conflicts that are enough to make an emo even more melancholic somehow, which is kind of like finding a way to make water more wet.

Still, the fest is set up to minimize said conflicts: The two main stages are positioned right next to each other, with one band getting ready to perform as another one plays nearby, so there’s no downtime between sets and you can stand in one spot and see both stages.

Also, the smaller stages rotate. So again, bands can ready themselves to perform while another plays, limiting downtime.

You might not be able to see everything , but you can still see a lot.

10 bands not to miss

■ Blink-182: The alternately puerile and zeppelin-hearted pop punk favorites play Vegas for the first time in a decade with singer-guitarist Tom Delonge, who rejoined the band this year. Expect the diarrhea jokes to flow from the stage like, well, you know …

■ Green Day : Start learning the chords to Operation Ivy’s “Knowledge” now: Green Day has been bringing up a fan from the crowd to play the ska-punk classic at its shows for years now.

■ Sum 41: This may be your last chance to see the once-hard-partying pop punk troupe. Sum 41 announced that it’s calling it a day after a farewell album and tour.

■ Thrice : The SoCal quartet is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its third and best-selling album, “The Artist in the Ambulance,” which is among the most definitive post-punk records of the early aughts.

■ The Front Bottoms : Laugh till you cry with this spirit-boosting folk punk duo (which expands its lineup live). The group’s songbook is equally wry and winsome, a good-time-in-waiting with tunes often delivered with a wink.

■ Beach Bunny : Beach Bunny frontwoman Lili Trifilio dissects her self-doubts in song in such open, infectious fashion, it almost makes insecurity endearing. We’re calling it now: The indie popsters’ “Prom Queen” will inspire one of the most full-throated crowd singalongs of the weekend.

■ Joyce Manor : Most of this acclaimed pop punk trio’s albums clock in around 20 minutes or less, which means they can pack a whole lot of hooks and heartache into a half-hour set.

■ Michelle Branch: This veteran singer-songwriter feels like some welcome counterprogramming here. She’s plenty emotive, if not exactly emo. Does that count?

■ The Offspring : Don’t be a sucker with low self-esteem and miss your chance to shout along to one ’90s punk anthem after the next when The Offspring air plenty of MTV staples from back when Furbies were still a thing.

■ Thirty Seconds to Mars: These Jared Leto-fronted rockers collaborated with Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds on a song from their new record, “It’s the End of the World but It’s a Beautiful Day.” Maybe Reynolds will join the band on stage in his hometown? Probably not, but perhaps you can find a way to corner Leto and get him to sign your “Morbius” poster.

What to do before/after the fest

You mean aside from stocking up on waterproof mascara?

Well, in addition to the fest itself, a number of sideshows affiliated with the event are taking place at various venues around town, because, you know, 60-plus bands and 12 to 13 hours of music in one day is merely an appetizer of sadness.

This year’s lineup:

Fit for a King and The Devil Wears Prada, House of Blues at Mandalay Bay, 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

■ Something Corporate , House of Blues at Mandalay Bay, 7:30 p.m. Friday.

■ All Time Low , The Pearl at the Palms, 8 p.m. Friday.

■ Sum 41 , Brooklyn Bowl at the Linq Promenade, 8 p.m. Friday.

■ Emo Night Brooklyn with special guests, Brooklyn Bowl, 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Masters 2024: Jon Rahm sounds off on Augusta National, says he ‘wasn’t sure why we were out there’ in blustery conditions

2148322857

Andrew Redington

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Extremely blustery conditions created a surreal scene on Friday afternoon—with wind gusts getting up to 30-35 miles per hour—causing sand from the bunkers at the 18th hole to blow out of the hazards and onto the green. Players like Tiger Woods had to shield their faces from the sand as it blew all over the 18th green. One of ESPN's bunker cameras looked like a snow globe after being shaken up.

Jon Rahm, who we know runs hot , was understandably peeved after making a few big numbers coming in—most notably a double bogey at the 14th hole caused by a bad three-putt when his five-footer for par ran nearly 20 feet past the hole.

The Spaniard didn’t hold back on his thoughts on being out in the conditions when asked about it after the round.

“A couple times, [I found myself] questioning why we were out there,” Rahm said, “especially when I got to 18 and saw the whole front of the green just full of sand. It's rolling a little bit different. I understand they want us to finish.

"I can imagine they were very close to calling it a few times, especially when we were on 11 green and we were getting those massive gusts every couple of minutes or so. It was extremely difficult. We got it in. Hopefully I can just make up some ground tomorrow.”

Rahm commented on the pace of play—which approached six hours for the afternoon groups due to the extreme winds.

“Yeah, you just put the ball down, and it's very close to moving,” Rahm said. “Not only that, how long did it take us to play? Over six hours to play just because they had to blow the greens in between groups, and then when you get to a group, people stepping back and back in. It's just, again, borderline.

“It was very, very close. It's about as hard a golf course as I've seen in a very long time.”

Zach Johnson, who won the 2007 Masters in some of the windiest, coldest weather, said he thought Friday was even windier than the extreme conditions in 2007.

The defending champion’s round of 76 is his second-highest at Augusta National—matched only by a 77 in the third round of 2022, a year before he won. Rahm (+5) started his third round 11 shots shy of the lead of the lead of Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau and Max Homa.

2024 Masters leaderboard breakdown: Byson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler go low, set pace with Round 1 halted

There are plenty of low scores on the masters leaderboard, but dechambeau and scheffler may be tough to catch nonetheless.

A pair of former U.S. Ryder Cup teammates find themselves out in front of the field after the first day of play at the 2024 Masters. Round 1 action was suspended at 7:51 p.m. ET due to darkness, but it is Bryson DeChambeau who puts head to pillow with the clubhouse lead overnight.

Catching fire during the early wave Thursday and utilizing eight birdies to card a 7-under 65, DeChambeau was clinical around Augusta National Golf Club. Ranking second from tee to green and first with the putter in hand, the 2020 U.S. Open champion put himself in a fine position to claim another of golf's grandest prizes.

In order to do so, DeChambeau will have to take down the man who stood alongside him at Whistling Straits a few years ago, Scottie Scheffler. The world No. 1 looked exactly like the world No. 1 should look Thursday as he navigated the tricky conditions at Augusta National in bogey-free fashion en route to a 6-under 66.

Racing to the finish line with four birdies over his last seven holes, Scheffler got through the worst of the conditions unblemished; instead of shriveling, he thrived. While he was unable to tack on one final birdie at the last to catch DeChambeau, he is undoubtedly the favorite to add one more major to his belt.

Scheffler was not the only Masters champion to find his stride Thursday as Danny Willett sits in third in the clubhouse at 4 under in his first start since September 2023 due to injury. Major staples like Will Zalatoris, Brian Harman, Tommy Fleetwood and Patrick Reed are lurking, while Rory McIlroy fired an under-par round to keep himself in the mix in his latest chase for the career grand slam.

Watch the final three rounds of the 2024 Masters continuing Friday with  Masters Live  as we follow the best golfers in the world through Augusta National with  Featured Groups , check in at the famed  Amen Corner  and see leaders round the turn on  holes 15 & 16 . Watch live on  CBSSports.com , the  CBS Sports app  and  Paramount+ .

2024 Masters leaderboard, Round 1 in progress

1. Bryson DeChambeau (-7): It was a controlled round for Bryson after he got off to a dream start with three straight birdies out of the gate. He hit 10 fairways, 15 greens in regulation and got up and down at an 86% clip. DeChambeau putted the ball beautifully on top of that, experiencing a renewed sense of patience on the golf course. He finished T29 in the 2019 Masters after holding the first-round lead.

"Winning at Winged Foot helped me understand how to win big tournaments," DeChambeau said. "But a lot of patience, especially out here on this golf course where you feel like it's gettable, you see it's right in front of you, but it's just tricky out here. It can be super tricky. Making sure that you play aggressively but in a safe manner to where it's not going to get you into too much trouble. So, for me, as my game has progressed, I've learned to be a -- I've tried to be a little bit smarter out there on the golf course and not try to go for broke and go for every flag but place it in the right position."

2. Scottie Scheffler (-6): There just aren't enough words to describe this guy. Scheffler led the field from tee to green, was slightly above average on the greens and got around a difficult Augusta National without dropping a shot. Now, it was not without a little good fortune as he holed a bunker shot on the par-3 12th for birdie and received a great break on the next when it appeared his second was destined for Rae's Creek. He skirted the water and instead added another birdie before picking up two more on his second nine, but that's what the great ones do. Scheffler's 66 was the lowest of his Masters career and his first bogey-free effort at Augusta National.

3. Nicolai Hojgaard (-5): Three holes still to play.

T4. Danny Willett, Max Homa (-4): Homa came into this week without much on his major résumé, and he is on pace to post his best ever opening round in a major championship with five holes left in his round. He impressed alongside Tiger Woods on Thursday and capped an impressive day with a nice up-and-down birdie on the par-5 13th to navigate Amen Corner in even-par fashion.

T6. Ryan Fox, Cameron Davis, Tyrrell Hatton (-3): Hatton has four holes still to play.

T9. Will Zalatoris, Ludvig Aberg, Tommy Fleetwood, Joaquin Niemann and four others (-2): One year removed from withdrawing for the Masters and opting for back surgery, Zalatoris finds himself in the major mix once again. Arriving with a stellar history at Augusta National that consisted of a runner-up performance in his debut and T6 in his second stroll, the wiry right hander is at it again. He kickstarted his round thanks to playing the second-nine par 5s in 3 under, but dropped shots on his final two holes left him at 2 under and with a bad taste in his mouth.

"That's the thing about this place, is that you get so much wind, so much swirling," Zalatoris said. "I hit 10 great golf shots on the last two holes coming in. That's just part of what it is around this place. It's playing brutal but it's a lot of fun right now. The course was very fair. Even with everything that we've gone through. Overall, yeah, very pleased."

Aberg and Fleetwood both have holes still to play.

T17. Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Patrick Cantlay, Viktor Hovland, Tony Finau, Matt Fitzpatrick and eight others (-1): There is a lot of good news for McIlroy, who signed for his first under-par opening round at the Masters in six years. He played the par 5s in even par, missed a short birdie chance on the 16th and could have easily squeezed out a couple more shots here or there. McIlroy's wedge play was a smidge sloppy leading to a dropped shot on the par-5 2nd and not aiding him in up-and-down efforts on two other occasions. Woods opened with a birdie, went back to par after the 4th and then birdied the 8th to maintain his score with five holes left to play.

T32. Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka, Shane Lowry, Tom Kim and five others (E): This is probably a disappointed bunch, especially someone like Schauffele who came into the week riding so much momentum. The world No. 5 made dropped two shots in his first four holes and slugged his way back to even par on the second nine. Outside of his iron play, Schauffele struggled, but he is not totally out of this tournament if he can post a low one on Friday. Koepka is only through the 11th.

T42. Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson, Wyndham Clark, Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa and seven others  (+1): The defending champion got off to a nice start playing his first nine in 2 under, but it fell apart from there. A second-nine 39 was the result of loose iron swings and a little frustration boiling over. He dropped shots on 17 and 18 to come in right around the course average on Thursday.

"It's a difficult golf course," Rahm said. "That's all I can say. It's not easy. You're not really having the luxury out there of being able to miss shots, especially tee shots. Unfortunately, on that back nine I missed a few too many shots."

Rick Gehman, Greg DuCharme and Patrick McDonald recap Round 1 of the Masters from Augusta National. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

Play suspended due to darkness at 7:52 p.m. ET

The horn has been sounded and players now face the choice on whether they want to complete the hole they are currently on. Tiger Woods, Max Homa and Jason Day are around the green on the par-5 13th with players such as Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth behind them. These guys will have to complete most of their second nines tomorrow morning.

Koepka keeping his cool

The five-time major champion hasn't made much noise, but he is right there kind of hanging around. Koepka exchanged a birdie for a bogey on his first nine to turn in even par and will have a chance to put his foot on the gas with some birdie chances on this side. Whether this chance comes tonight or tomorrow morning depends on the sunlight.

Tiger, Max hummin'

These two are kind of feeding off each other, I think. Max Homa turns in 4 under thanks to birdies on Nos. 8-9 while Tiger is back in red figures as well thank to a birdie on the par 5. It has been clinical from Tiger up until his approach into the 10th which will short side him and set up a tricky par attempt.

Scheffler shoots 6-under 66

That was clinical from the world No. 1. Scheffler signs for six birdies, 12 pars and will sign for a bogey-free 6-under 66 to put himself just one behind Bryson DeChambeau. In a shocking development, Scheffler ranked first in strokes gained tee to green on Thursday.

Rahm shoots 1-over 73

The defending champion experienced a second nine to forget at Augusta National. After turning in 2 under, Rahm came home in 3-over 39 in part to back-to-back bogeys to finish. The world No. 3 was sloppy with his iron play throughout the day and never looked super comfortable en route to his 1-over 73.

Scheffler surging to the finish line

The world No. 1 tacks on a couple second-nine birdies and finds himself just one behind Bryson DeChambeau. Scheffler heads to 18 with a chance to tie the first-round lead while other players like Will Zalatoris, Matt Fitzpatrick and Jon Rahm are faltering down the stretch.
