Amazing experience! We absolutely loved our hike and loved the people we got to share our travels with. We truly believe this is one of the BEST ways to “experience Jordan”. Our hiking guide, Mahmood, was fun, informative, professional, and became a great friend! We were so impressed that guiding our group wasn’t just a job for Mahmood, but rather a passion... You didn’t feel part of the mass tourism, but rather part of something raw and real.

My two friends and I went on a 10 day trip to Jordan and used [Experience] Jordan Adventures to arrange it. The short review is everything was superlative. The long review: I had some experiences I wanted to experience: The Ma'in Hot Springs, Petra, Wadi Rum and snorkeling/diving the Red Sea. I contacted a bunch of tour agencies and Raisa at Experience Jordan seemed to immediately know what I was trying to achieve. She arranged a 10 day tour with a driver, hotels, a camel ride at Wadi Rum, desert camping, etc. ... In sum, I recommend Experience Jordan Adventures without reservation.

Just returned from our Experience Jordan trip and could not recommend more, it is a must do. Our original trip was cancelled last April due to COVID and the company reached out to honor our trip over one year later. I'm glad they did! I have travelled quite a bit through the world and this is hands down one of the best experiences... I have never had this much fun or laughed so hard during a trip with strangers... You may think you can do this on your own, but Experience Jordan will give you a trip experience you cannot replicate on your own.

Spectacular Tour!!

The experience Jordan tour is a beautiful delightful way to immerse yourself in Jordanian culture and all its beauty. Our tour guide Furat was an absolute delight. He is extremely knowledgeable, kind, and a wonderful travel companion on the hiking trip. My friends and I plan to do the longer trek in a few years. We visited Petra, Wadi Rum, and Wadi Mujib. The scenery is breathtaking and like nothing we’d ever experienced. We had delicious, traditional home-cooked Jordanian feasts each night. In Wadi Rum, we spent our last night sleeping under the stars. Our tour guide Furat made the trip so comfortable and all the more enjoyable. I encourage everyone to book this trip if you’re able! You’ll encounter Jordanian generosity and hospitality, a rich culture, and magnificent scenery.

Amazing full Jordan Bike Trail Experience

Amazing and beautiful bike trip. Really well organised by Anton who is a fantastic and knowledgeable tour guide and super flexibel to adapt the tour to my needs (including food and snacks)! Accommodation on the trip is carefully selected and each one of them unique which made the trip an even more special experience. All in all I had nothing to worry about, had great company and everything was taken care off! A really memorable experience!

This Experience Jordan Dana to Petra Trek was excellent. Our guide, Furat, was amazing - friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, communicative. He also shared photographs that he took of the hiking group/individuals - "unposed", natural scenes that provided far more colour to my photo library to remember this trip. He also guided us to the most photogenic of spots in each location. The trip was well organized. Food was abundant - never went hungry (quite the opposite). Experience Jordan recognized birthdays of a couple of trekkers (with a couple of elaborate, delicious cakes, in the middle of the desert, no less! Wonderful, special touch.) The service level of the office/admin (Andy) was very high and professional. Very quick responses to my emailed enquiries.

We commit to practice environmental protection and enhance community relations by ensuring the enforcement of following practices: 

• Actively reduce the use of disposable and consumer goods. 
• Favor the purchase of sustainable goods and services, office, and catering supplies 
• Purchase products in bulk, to reduce the amount of packaging materials. 
• Set copy and printing machines by default to black and white printing and collect the papers printed on, to use the blank side for notes or draft work. 
• Use cleaning materials which are non-hazardous where possible and available. 
• Implement measurements to reduce brochure wastage through digital brochures. 
• Have an active commitment to measure, monitor and reduce energy consumption. 
• Switch off lights and equipment when not in use, set equipment by default in the energy saving mode, where this is feasible. 
• Prefer low energy equipment when buying items, including considerations of cost and quality. 
• Comply with the national legislation concerning waste disposal. 
• Separate all materials which can be recycled and organize collection and proper disposal. 
• Contribute to the protection and preservation of local historical, archaeological, culturally, and spiritually important properties and sites.

Transportation

We aim to ensure that vehicles used on tours do not cause more than average pollution. We believe that transport is an important aspect of sustainable tourism, and we do our best to decrease the average pollution level. 

We commit to this by:

• Selecting the most sustainable options considering price and comfort when selecting transport options to the destination. 
• Considering and giving preference to more sustainable alternatives when selecting transport options for transfers and excursions in the destination, considering price, comfort, and practical considerations.

Excursions and Activities

• Advising guests on behavior standards during excursions and activities with a focus on respecting the local culture, nature, animal, and environment and not offering any excursions which are not in compliance with local, national, and international law.

Hot Oceans Worsened Dubai’s Dramatic Flooding, Scientists Say

An international team of researchers found that heavy rains had intensified in the region, though they couldn’t say for sure how much climate change was responsible.

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions stunned the world this month. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a total surprise — forecasters had anticipated the storms several days earlier and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual.

Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers. These rains often come during El Niño conditions like the ones the world is experiencing now.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on April 16 was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . And parts of the nation had already experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms in March.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every part of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

Hot oceans are a big factor.

An international team of scientists has made a first attempt at estimating the extent to which climate change may have contributed to April’s storms. The researchers didn’t manage to pin down the connection precisely, though in their analysis, they did highlight one known driver of heavy rain in the region: above-normal ocean temperatures.

Large parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans have been hotter than usual recently, in part because of El Niño and other natural weather cycles, and in part because of human-induced warming .

When looking only at El Niño years, the scientists estimated that storm events as infrequent as this month’s delivered 10 percent to 40 percent more rain to the region than they would in a world that hadn’t been warmed by human activities. They cautioned, however, that these estimates were highly uncertain.

“Rainfall, in general, is getting more extreme,” said Mansour Almazroui, a climate scientist at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and one of the researchers who contributed to the analysis.

The analysis was conducted by scientists affiliated with World Weather Attribution, a research collaboration that studies extreme weather events shortly after they occur. Their findings about this month’s rains haven’t yet been peer reviewed, but are based on standardized methods .

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried around the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this month’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half-century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.

REPORT: The 49ers are Likely to Trade Deebo Samuel

Here's a curveball.

Instead of trading Brandon Aiyuk, the 49ers are now expected to trade Deebo Samuel, according to Mike Silver , who says a deal involving Samuel is "likely" because the 49ers have drafted wide receiver Ricky Pearsall. Aiyuk is available for a trade as well, but the 49ers presumably would have wanted a first-round pick in exchange for him and didn't get it.

Samuel seems to be worth a second-round pick or a third-round pick, or possibly both. Which means he won't bring the 49ers a big haul. In addition, trading him would free up only $7 million roughly. So a trade wouldn't benefit the 49ers much next season.

Still, trading Samuel makes more sense than trading Aiyuk, because Aiyuk is 26 and Samuel is 28. And Aiyuk is getting better, while Samuel is not. And opposing defenses will use man-to-man coverage often against the 49ers as long as Brock Purdy is their quarterback, and Samuel can't beat man to man. He proved that in the playoffs, particularly the Super Bowl.

So Samuel isn't useful to the 49ers anymore. They don't need him to play running back because they have Christian McCaffrey. They need him to play wide receiver, get himself open and catch the ball consistently, things he can't do.

So the 49ers drafted Pearsall, who's a much better route runner than Samuel and drops fewer passes. Of course, Pearsall can't compare to Samuel with the ball in his hands after the catch, but perhaps the 49ers offense is evolving away from YAC specialists.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces Final Rule Requiring Automatic Refunds of Airline Tickets and Ancillary Service Fees

Rule makes it easy to get money back for cancelled or significantly changed flights, significantly delayed checked bags, and additional services not provided  

WASHINGTON – The Biden-Harris Administration today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a final rule that requires airlines to promptly provide passengers with automatic cash refunds when owed. The new rule makes it easy for passengers to obtain refunds when airlines cancel or significantly change their flights, significantly delay their checked bags, or fail to provide the extra services they purchased.

“Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them - without headaches or haggling,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg . “Our new rule sets a new standard to require airlines to promptly provide cash refunds to their passengers.”  

The final rule creates certainty for consumers by defining the specific circumstances in which airlines must provide refunds. Prior to this rule, airlines were permitted to set their own standards for what kind of flight changes warranted a refund. As a result, refund policies differed from airline to airline, which made it difficult for passengers to know or assert their refund rights. DOT also received complaints of some airlines revising and applying less consumer-friendly refund policies during spikes in flight cancellations and changes. 

Under the rule, passengers are entitled to a refund for:

• Canceled or significantly changed flights: Passengers will be entitled to a refund if their flight is canceled or significantly changed, and they do not accept alternative transportation or travel credits offered. For the first time, the rule defines “significant change.” Significant changes to a flight include departure or arrival times that are more than 3 hours domestically and 6 hours internationally; departures or arrivals from a different airport; increases in the number of connections; instances where passengers are downgraded to a lower class of service; or connections at different airports or flights on different planes that are less accessible or accommodating to a person with a disability.  
• Significantly delayed baggage return: Passengers who file a mishandled baggage report will be entitled to a refund of their checked bag fee if it is not delivered within 12 hours of their domestic flight arriving at the gate, or 15-30 hours of their international flight arriving at the gate, depending on the length of the flight.  
• Extra services not provided: Passengers will be entitled to a refund for the fee they paid for an extra service — such as Wi-Fi, seat selection, or inflight entertainment — if an airline fails to provide this service.

DOT’s final rule also makes it simple and straightforward for passengers to receive the money they are owed. Without this rule, consumers have to navigate a patchwork of cumbersome processes to request and receive a refund — searching through airline websites to figure out how make the request, filling out extra “digital paperwork,” or at times waiting for hours on the phone. In addition, passengers would receive a travel credit or voucher by default from some airlines instead of getting their money back, so they could not use their refund to rebook on another airline when their flight was changed or cancelled without navigating a cumbersome request process.  

The final rule improves the passenger experience by requiring refunds to be:

• Automatic: Airlines must automatically issue refunds without passengers having to explicitly request them or jump through hoops.   
• Prompt: Airlines and ticket agents must issue refunds within seven business days of refunds becoming due for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days for other payment methods.  
• Cash or original form of payment: Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in cash or whatever original payment method the individual used to make the purchase, such as credit card or airline miles. Airlines may not substitute vouchers, travel credits, or other forms of compensation unless the passenger affirmatively chooses to accept alternative compensation.    
• Full amount: Airlines and ticket agents must provide full refunds of the ticket purchase price, minus the value of any portion of transportation already used. The refunds must include all government-imposed taxes and fees and airline-imposed fees, regardless of whether the taxes or fees are refundable to airlines.

The final rule also requires airlines to provide prompt notifications to consumers affected by a cancelled or significantly changed flight of their right to a refund of the ticket and extra service fees, as well as any related policies.

In addition, in instances where consumers are restricted by a government or advised by a medical professional not to travel to, from, or within the United States due to a serious communicable disease, the final rule requires that airlines must provide travel credits or vouchers. Consumers may be required to provide documentary evidence to support their request. Travel vouchers or credits provided by airlines must be transferrable and valid for at least five years from the date of issuance.

The Department received a significant number of complaints against airlines and ticket agents for refusing to provide a refund or for delaying processing of refunds during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. At the height of the pandemic in 2020, refund complaints peaked at 87 percent of all air travel service complaints received by DOT. Refund problems continue to make up a substantial share of the complaints that DOT receives.

DOT’s Historic Record of Consumer Protection Under the Biden-Harris Administration

Under the Biden-Harris Administration and Secretary Buttigieg, DOT has advanced the largest expansion of airline passenger rights, issued the biggest fines against airlines for failing consumers, and returned more money to passengers in refunds and reimbursements than ever before in the Department’s history.

• Thanks to pressure from Secretary Buttigieg and DOT’s flightrights.gov dashboard, all 10 major U.S. airlines guarantee free rebooking and meals, and nine guarantee hotel accommodations when an airline issue causes a significant delay or cancellation. These are new commitments the airlines added to their customer service plans that DOT can legally ensure they adhere to and are displayed on flightrights.gov .  
• Since President Biden took office, DOT has helped return more than $3 billion in refunds and reimbursements owed to airline passengers – including over $600 million to passengers affected by the Southwest Airlines holiday meltdown in 2022.   
• Under Secretary Buttigieg, DOT has issued over $164 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations. Between 1996 and 2020, DOT collectively issued less than $71 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations.  
• DOT recently launched a new partnership with a bipartisan group of state attorneys general to fast-track the review of consumer complaints, hold airlines accountable, and protect the rights of the traveling public.  
• In 2023, the flight cancellation rate in the U.S. was a record low at under 1.2% — the lowest rate of flight cancellations in over 10 years despite a record amount of air travel.  
• DOT is undertaking its first ever industry-wide review of airline privacy practices and its first review of airline loyalty programs.

In addition to finalizing the rules to require automatic refunds and protect against surprise fees, DOT is also pursuing rulemakings that would:

• Propose to ban family seating junk fees and guarantee that parents can sit with their children for no extra charge when they fly. Before President Biden and Secretary Buttigieg pressed airlines last year, no airline committed to guaranteeing fee-free family seating. Now, four airlines guarantee fee-free family seating, and the Department is working on its family seating junk fee ban proposal.  
• Propose to make passenger compensation and amenities mandatory so that travelers are taken care of when airlines cause flight delays or cancellations.   
• Expand the rights for passengers who use wheelchairs and ensure that they can travel safely and with dignity . The comment period on this proposed rule closes on May 13, 2024.

There are different implementation periods in this final rule ranging from six months for airlines to provide automatic refunds when owed to 12 months for airlines to provide transferable travel vouchers or credits when consumers are unable to travel for reasons related to a serious communicable disease.
