The Chieftains are an Irish folk group often held responsible for streamlining traditional celtic form into the pop world. Without their presence one might question wether such acts like the Pogues, Flogging Molly, or Frank Turner would even exist. Apart from the band’s solo efforts they have collaborated extensively.

Members Paddy Moloney (principal composer/multi-instrumentalist), Sean Potts (tin whistle), and Michael Tubridy (tin whistle, Irish flute, concertina) formed the 1st manifestation of this Irish collective in Dublin in 1962. From that point they recruited Martin Fay and David Fallon and held their 1st rehearsal in Moloney’s house.

Previous to his career with the Chieftains, Moloney comprised part of the traditional Irish act, Ceoltóirí Chualann. He played the Uillean pipes, an instrument he had been studying since age 8. The unique integrative process in which he positioned this instrument in the mix became an integral part for both Ceoltóirí Chualann and the Chieftains sound.

The Chieftains released their self-titled studio debut in 1963. This album did not reach far outside the boarders of their homeland; however, within Ireland and even the UK they quickly became recognized as one of the most exciting folk acts to emerge in recent times. The band’s debut offering has helped lay the ground work for the fusion of olde time Irish folk music and modern rock and is also historically significant in the sense that it was one of the very 1st folk recordings to be recorded on stereo. The Chieftains took a lengthy break after this release as Moloney and Pots devoted most of their time to Ceoloiri Chualann. However, they resurrected the Chieftains quickly after Ceoloiri Chualann disbanded.

Their follow up album “The Chieftains 2” came out six years after their debut. Through the remainder of the 60s and into the early 70s the band operated on what has been described as a “semi-professional” level; nevertheless, they continued to output outstanding releases, continuing on with their simply devised album titles: “The Chieftains 3” (1971), “The Chieftains 4” (1973), “The Chieftains 5 (1975)”.

It wasn’t until 1975 that the group started generating a buzz internationally. This was the year that they released their brilliant 5th studio album, but most importantly it was the year in which they put out the soundtrack for Stanley Kubrick’s sweeping epic “Barry Lyndon”. Their placement of music in this film opened up a rabid fan base in the US and earned them an Academy Award.

From 1976 to 1980 the Chieftains averaged a little over 1 studio album release per year and were likewise incredibly proficient in the 80s.

Though the band’s sound holds true to the core of Irish traditional folk music they have never hesitated to adapt and expand their sound. This can be evidenced on their multi-cultural efforts such as “The Year of the French” and “The Chieftains In China”.

The group did not let up in the 90s or the 2000s as they issued a stream of releases throughout this period. In 2012 they marked their 50th anniversary with the album “Voice of Ages” . This album featured production by the highly revered music producer T-Bone Burnett and featured guest contributions from Paolo Nutini, The Decemberists, and Bon Iver.

Over the Chieftains five decade spanning career they have been awarded six Grammys and have performed with a countless number of artists of all genres some which include, Bob Dylan, Madonna, Ultravox, Van Morrison, Mike Oldfield, Elvis Costello, and Jackson Browne.

Live reviews

The instrumental sound of The Chieftans is something that there really isn’t enough of in the music industry. The musicians playing their Irish folk music on every instrument imaginable from the harp, through to the flute, and back to the piano and drums is truly captivating and exciting to watch. The multi-instrumentalists switch from instrument to instrument whilst maintaining the foundation of their song.

Over the years, the band have won six Grammy Awards, an incredible success, and have several other awards under their belts. Seeing them live was incredible. On a studio recording, it’s almost impossible to comprehend the sheer skill and talent of the instrumentalists, but seeing them live, watching the grace and enthusiasm that each member performs with is incredible. Every member is a perfectionist at their instrument, and even if you’re not musical, it’s evident in the way that they play as a unit and bounce off each other.

Their recital of Voice of Ages was perfection, playing it in its entirety and holding an auditorium of thousands in complete silence throughout their performance. They are just as talented as they were 30 years ago, and their performance was spellbinding. I wouldn’t miss another concert for the world. You must see them perform live!

Obviously, I am a big fan of The Chieftains - especially love how at some of their concerts, they have held an audition earlier in the day to invite local bodhran players to join them onstage. Fantastic! Also love how at some of their concerts, they encourage everyone in the audience to get up and join in the chain as fans wind their way through the hall to the tune the boys (and girl) are playing. Fantastic experience as always. Last time I saw them they were playing in Calgary. I would drive there again to see this band. Worth their weight in gold.

One of the best shows I've been to. The band was full of witty and charming banter between songs, and you could tell they were really enjoying themselves. They even included some hometown talent in the form of a local boys choir and drum and pipe band. Between the dancing, the stories, the solos, and the chemistry, it was an amazing night that won't be fogotten.

The-Chieftains-Chronicles-60-Years

In anticipation of their 60th anniversary next year, The Chieftains will release Chronicles: 60 years of The Chieftains on November 12, 2021 through Claddagh Records . The project, which has been in production for the last twelve months, was postponed indefinitely following the untimely death of Paddy Moloney , the group’s founder and leader, in October. However, following consultation with Paddy’s family and the remaining members of The Chieftains, the project will continue exactly as Paddy wished with the original artwork, track list, liner notes and footage unchanged.

The Moloney Family said in a statement: “Over the last few months Paddy was instrumental in putting the Chronicles project together —whether it was choosing versions of a recording to include, working on the track list, or approving the artwork—he really enjoyed being involved and it meant so much to him seeing this come together on Claddagh Records, The Chieftains first-ever record label, and one which Paddy ran for several years, producing much of its catalogue. We are so happy that he got to see the final version. The album is a fitting tribute to Paddy and The Chieftains.”

The release of Chronicles marks the first time ever a complete career retrospective from The Chieftains has been released and includes tracks from across the revered band’s discography—from their very first album release Chieftains 1 right up to their most recent studio album release Voice of Ages— and includes seminal collaborations with The Rolling Stones , Paulo Nutini, Diana Krall, Alison Krauss, Van Morrison, and Sinéad O’Connor. It also includes previously unreleased recordings from Live at The Royal Albert Hall, Live at The Cambridge Folk Festival as well as footage and recordings from the BBC and RTÉ archives. Chronicles: 60 years of The Chieftains will be available across multiple formats including 2CD, 2CD/DVD, 2LP, 3LP (Ireland only), Digital Standard and Digital Deluxe.

‘Figure 8’: How Elliott Smith Turned Pop Music Upon Itself

‘rumor and sigh’: the word about richard thompson gets ever louder, ‘tim hardin 2’: a beautiful album that stands the test of time.

Founded in 1962, winners of six Grammy Awards and an Academy Award, The Chieftains—founder and leader Paddy Moloney (Uilleann pipes, tin whistle), Matt Molloy (flute), and Kevin Conneff (bodhrán, vocals)—have popularized traditional Irish music world-wide during their astonishing 60-year career. Their ability to transcend musical boundaries to blend tradition with modern music has notably hailed them as one of the most renowned and revered musical groups to this day.

Their repertoire was, and is, largely of Ireland. Well-established dance tunes such as “Drowsy Maggie” and “The Chattering Magpie” were given a new invigorating life by the group not to mention eminent songs and airs that might be described as their signature tunes. Foremost among these must be “Mná na hÉireann” (“The Women of Ireland”) whose haunting melody, composed by Seán Ó Riada, continues to resonate and remain relevant in the twenty-first century. Their instrumental version was released in 1973 on the album The Chieftains 4 and their version of the song, based on the Irish of the eighteenth-century poet Peadar Ó Doirnín, features prominently on the sound- track to the film Barry Lyndon released in 1975. Kate Bush, Mike Oldfield , and Sinéad O’Connor are among the famous performers of the piece.

Pieces such as “Brian Ború’s March” from The Chieftains 2 or “Carolan’s Welcome” on The Chieftains 9 (Boil The Breakfast Early) , reflect their inspirational musicianship. Drawing from the vast well of Irish tradition, this ensemble blended old and new and remained totally committed to their genre.

As well as the selected audio recordings, Chronicles: 60 years of The Chieftain s also includes the addition of a bonus DVD that allows us to experience the visual history of the band. The performers’ hairstyles and fashions may have evolved down the years, but even now as they approach their 60th anniversary, that magical experience The Chieftains give their listeners, is as strong and as vibrant as ever.

The Chieftains’ legacy is immense. They have changed the face of Irish music to such an extent that in Irish traditional music circles reference is made to a time ‘before The Chieftains’ and a time ‘after The Chieftains’. It is nothing short of extraordinary that together as a band they have maintained such a high consistency over six decades of playing. Chronicles: 60 years of The Chieftains is a fine tribute to a remarkable group of musicians.

The Chieftains embark on an Irish Goodbye tour through the US

The Chieftains are bringing their music on tour to the US in 2020 with The Irish Goodbye Tour.

Two members of the Chieftains during a performance.

What is an Irish Goodbye, you may ask? Dictionary.com states that an Irish Goodbye is sneaking out of a party without telling anyone. But some people disagree. They say that an Irish person can’t be the last one to leave the party without hours of long conversations, a few sing alongs and elaborate keening farewells. So you may have to guess which definition fits The Chieftains’ Irish Goodbye tour. Are they leaving us or are they staying around for a few more songs?

The Chieftains - Paddy Moloney, Matt Molloy, and Kevin Coneff - are renowned for reinventing traditional Irish music on a contemporary and international scale. The Chieftains were formed in Ireland in 1962 by Moloney, the top traditional folk musician in Ireland and around the world. After more than fifty seven years of making some of the most beautiful music, The Chieftains' music remains as fresh and relevant as when they first began. And now they will bring their music once again on tour to the US in 2020 called, ‘The Irish Goodbye.’

“It’ll be fantastic to return once again to America where we are always welcomed with open arms,” Paddy Moloney said. “We’ll share a lively evening of music, stories, laughter and great craic! In each city we will perform with local Pipe and Drum bands, Irish Dance schools, choirs and special guests – the whole shebang! It’s always fun to showcase local talent to their hometown crowds.”

As cultural ambassadors, their performances have been linked with seminal historic events, such as being the first Western musicians to perform on the Great Wall of China, participating in Roger Water’s “The Wall” performance in Berlin in 1990, and being the first ensemble to perform a concert in the Capitol Building in Washington DC. In 2010, their experimental collaborations extended to out of this world, when Paddy Moloney’s whistle and Matt Molloy’s flute traveled with NASA astronaut, Cady Coleman, to the international space station.

Although their early following was purely a folk audience, the range and variation of their music and accompanying musicians quickly captured a much broader audience, elevating their status to the likeness of fellow Irish band, U2. Never afraid to shock purists and push genre boundaries, The Chieftains, however, remain loyal to their roots. They are as comfortable playing spontaneous Irish sessions as they are headlining a concert at Carnegie Hall.  Approaching sixty years of making some of the most beautiful music in the world, The Chieftains remain as fresh and relevant as when they first began.

“Our US fans continue to give us the warmest of welcomes, so it’s going to be a huge pleasure to play once again for all our friends,” Paddy added.

So are they staying or are they going?  ‘The Irish Goodbye’ begins on February 14 in Maryville, Tennessee and ends in Fairfax, Virginia on March 19. For full tour information and tickets go to www.thechieftains.com

will the chieftains tour again

Winner of six Grammy awards and widely-regarded as the world’s best-known and best-loved Irish folk music group, The Chieftains return to Storrs on Saturday, March 14 to treat their audience to a night of rollicking traditional Irish music, dancing, and merriment in the cozy candlelit cabaret setting of UConn’s Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts.

The Storrs concert appearance, one stop in the band’s “The Irish Goodbye” Tour, will celebrate the iconic group’s nearly six decades of music-making, during which they reinvented traditional Irish music on a contemporary and international scale. They say that an Irish person can’t be the last one to leave the party without hours of long conversations, a few sing-alongs and elaborate farewells. This performance promises the latter, as founder Paddy Moloney says, “Our US fans continue to give us the warmest of welcomes, so it’s going to be a huge pleasure to play once again for all our friends.”

Sandwiches, desserts, and beverages will be available from a cash bar when doors open at 7:00 pm. The show begins at 8:00 pm.

Each gig is 'one-off' after 58 years

The Chieftains.

By Colleen Taylor

Retirement is not a concept Paddy Moloney seems willing to accept—in mind or in elbows. Still playing, still recording, still touring, the uileann piping legend and Chieftains figurehead is somehow, remarkably, impossibly, still at it. At 81 years of age, he is currently leading the Chieftains on another American tour for their 58th year of performing. The facts in the previous sentence may look fictitious, but my recent chat with the Irish music legend evinced their verity.

Moloney’s energy projects out of him, through his voice, laughter, easy disposition, talking a mile a minute. A simple few minutes with the man will tell you he is, as his career documents, something of a superhuman. He may not go partying with the Rolling Stones till 3 in the morning anymore, but he still puts on as stellar a show as he did in the Chieftains' early years. And 2020 is no exception.

Even after 58 years, Moloney sees each show as unique, different, a “one-off,” as he puts it. Each gig on the tour, from New York’s Town Hall to the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles to Boston Symphony Hall, is its own specialized experience, particular to the city, its Chieftains fans—or “friends,” as Paddy would call them—and its local pipe bands and dancers. Moloney continues his grandfatherly practice of inviting all kinds of local performers into his show, including dancers, often provided by step dance teacher and legend Donny Golden, to local groups. In fact, much like Chieftain’s innovative recording history, which has always crossed traditional Irish music with other national genres, fixtures on the tour now extend well beyond Ireland. For instance, some of Paddy’s stars include the brother team Jon and Nathan Pilatzke, who demonstrate the energetic Ottawa Valley style of dancing for enthusiastic audiences.

will the chieftains tour again

Most interesting from my perspective is how the Chieftain’s lineup has increasingly become more female-dominated than ever before, suggesting new gender dynamics in the growth of Irish music. Moloney says that dancer Cara Butler and fiddler Tara Breen, who have both been with the tour for several years, take good care of all the performers and crew and keep the show running. There’s also the young Tríona Marshall, a new addition who plays harp for the Chieftains. Aylth McCormack is a Scots-Gaelic singer who also adds dynamic scope to the show.

will the chieftains tour again

Paddy Moloney.

For those who have watched the Chieftains through it all, from the early days in the 1960s and ‘70s to the breakthrough album “Long Black Veil” in 1995, the Grammy noms and wins, and years upon years of tours and collaborations, this tour will not disappoint. In addition to new young voices and influences in Irish, Scottish, Canadian, and American music, the show also reminisces on the Chieftains greatest moments. “We’re going to give a flavor of the 50 albums we’ve made over the 58 years in the tour. We open the concert with a montage of people that we have played with and people we have met,” Moloney explained. The show will feature the “Troublemaker’s Jig” he composed for Nelson Mandela, for instance, as well as “Bonaparte’s Retreat,” and some sean-nós dancing sets that bring Paddy back to his childhood, dancing parlor room sets in his grandmother’s house in the Laois mountains.

Paddy Moloney is so friendly, so familiar, and so humble that it’s sometimes easy to forget that he is also a living, breathing archive of music history. The details he can recall about his adventures, his travels, and the people he has met are as good as any history book documenting Rock N’Roll or the Folk music revolution. For instance, in the midst of our friendly chat, he recalled, offhandedly, a party at Elton John’s house, where he and Paul McCartney did a bit of Irish dancing for a laugh.

Needless to say, I had a bit of trouble regaining my composure for a follow-up question. But Paddy, ever the gentleman and pro, filled my silence with more historically-weighty memories: “You know,” he said, “I met up with Paul McCartney the day John Lennon died.” Then there’s the fact that he and Sean Keane played on Mick Jagger’s first solo album. And of course, one cannot forget that the Chieftains have won six grammys, which Paddy was also somehow and genuinely nonchalant about: “They’re lying about here somewhere.” In fact, perhaps unbeknownst to Paddy, one of them is behind the bar at Matt Molloy’s pub in Westport, Mayo, if you would like to see it for yourself. You can even ask the bartender to hold it, as I did.

In addition to being a historical archive, Paddy Moloney is a cultural ambassador. He has traveled all over the world, brought Irish music to far-off and unexpected places like Japan, where he inspired an entire subculture of uileann pipe playing, including a young, all-female Japanese traditional band called “The Lady Chieftains.” Paddy collaborated with Japanese singer Akiko Yano for the whimsically-titled tune “Saki in the Jar.” In addition, Paddy Moloney has recently received the equivalency of a knighthood from the King of Spain, awarded the Encomienda de la Orden del Mérito Civil for his contribution to traditional music worldwide.

Indeed, “Chieftains” is no longer an eight-man band formed in the 1960s but a movement—a group and family that reaches across the globe and invites disparate musicians into its circle. There are far more Chieftains now than Moloney, Sean Keane, Matt Molloy and Derek Bell. Nowadays, you can find honorary Chieftains in Spain, in Canada, in Japan, and of course, all across America. “Once you get in the tour,” Paddy joked, “well, we never say no to anybody who plays with us.” This rule may even apply to audience members who get up and dance during the show, and certainly to the New York pipers who, in years past, have taken the music from the stage in the Town Hall, out onto the streets of New York.

Still, 58 years on and off the road is an exhausting endeavor. The stress and hassle of touring and traveling has become more of a challenge to the well-seasoned Chieftains of late. (Apparently many of the other original Chieftains blame Paddy for the ever-postponed retirement: “This is your fault,” they tell him, to which he laughs.) But despite the difficulty, they won’t be denied the joy of performing, which remains a life-force. “To be playing this particular tour now is going to be a joy,” Paddy said. Moloney has a particular fondness for playing New York City’s Town Hall: “It has something magic about it, the people are almost in your parlor back home, you know. It has that homely feel.”

Toward the end of our long, cheerful, and for me, nourishing conversation, I returned to the question with which I began, still grappling for explanation. Still flabbergasted, I asked Paddy how he still does it—does he not want to retire? His answer, true to form, was a good-humored, evasive laugh. His wife jokes that he has been practicing retirement for the past 10 years. Well, no offense meant to you, Paddy, but you’re failing superbly at it. Even when he claims travel fatigue, Paddy does not seem interested in gaining more retirement practice anytime soon. He has plans for collaborating with new artists, maybe another documentary with RTE, or even more albums. But right now, even as you read this, Paddy Moloney’s thoughts and energy are with his tour, his many Chieftains, and his many friends/fans.

Don’t miss your chance to see the legend himself, live, this March. The Chieftains’ ironically (misleadingly?) titled “Irish Goodbye Tour” will reach Boston Symphony Hall on March 13, Storrs, Conn., March 14, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on March 15, and as ever, dictated by tradition and St. Patrick himself, the Chieftains will play the New York Town Hall on 43 rd Street on March 17.

The Chieftains – the revival of Irish instrumental music

The Chieftains - the revival of Irish instrumental music

The Chieftains are one of the most remarkable bands to ever come out of Ireland.

Changing Musicians Grammy Awards LandMark Performances Film Soundtracks Singing with the Stars The Chieftains videos

They have won six Grammy awards and been nominated 18 times.

They almost single-handedly revived Irish instrumental music while still holding down day jobs and ironically perhaps, the more quintessentially Irish their music became, the more it appealed to a worldwide audience.

They won numerous awards, sold millions of records, became feted all over America and Europe, and were even invited by the Chinese to perform a concert on the Great Wall of China. They also gave Michael Flatley of Riverdance fame his first break.

Collaborating with rock stars to perform Irish songs

The Chieftains are an Irish band who have won 6 Grammy Awards

The Chieftains have regularly caught the attention of stars from other musical genres who have been keen to perform with them.

Collaborations with Irish singers like Van Morrison and Sinead O’Connor might be expected.

However, many were taken by surprise when The Chieftains started recording with musicians like The Rolling Stones, Sting, Roger Daltrey from The Who, Mark Knopfler and numerous others.

They were also invited to perform the music for Hollywood films. It was all a long way from their humble beginnings back in Ireland.

International stars while working for the Post Office

Another remarkable aspect of The Chieftains’ story is that for the first 12 years of their careers, they only performed in their spare time and held on to their day jobs. Some of the band worked for the Department of Post and Telegraph in Ireland.

That seems surprising now but we have to remember that they started out in the 1960s in Ireland when work was hard to come by so if you had a job you tended to guard it carefully.

Also, there wasn’t much demand for their kind of music in those early days. They had to create the market themselves.

The Chieftains voted Band of the Year

Paddy Moloney says his mother didn’t consider music to be a full-time occupation. It was something only to be pursued in your spare time. Even when The Chieftains had become world famous she would joke that Paddy didn’t have a proper job.

Everything changed in 1975 when they were voted Band of the Year by the British music magazine Melody Maker – fighting off competition from the likes of Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones.

They also gained added confidence around that time when they played to an audience of 25,000 at the Cambridge Folk Music Festival in England and were called back to perform three encores.

Given their rising popularity and critical acclaim, they finally decided to take the plunge and go professional.

The early days of The Chieftains

That decision had been nearly 15 years in the making. The band had begun way back in 1962 when founding member and driving force Paddy Moloney wanted to record some of his instrumental arrangements of Irish tunes.

Paddy played the uilleann pipes and he teamed up with Martin Fay on fiddle, Sean Potts on tin whistle and Michael Tubridy on flute.

The musicians already knew each other well having played together in Ceoltoiri Cualann, the Irish folk orchestra set up by Sean O’Riada.

Death of a Chieftain, birth of a band

The budding new group got their name from a director of Claddagh Records, John Montague who had written a poem called Death of a Chieftain.

He suggested The Chieftains as a name and it stuck. It also became the title of the album the band were about to record for the Claddagh record label.

The band’s first album, The Chieftains, was released in 1963.

Critically acclaimed but not a best seller

The album featured instrumentals and although well received, it was not very successful commercially, certainly not successful enough for the band to turn professional.

In those early years the Irish folk scene was dominated by bands like The Dubliners and The Clancy Brothers who, although they included a few instrumentals in their sets, concentrated largely on songs. The Chieftains would have to wait a while longer.

In the meantime, Paddy Moloney helped to run Claddagh Records.

Long wait for Chieftains 2

The band held on to their day jobs and played several concerts over the next five years but it wasn’t until 1969 that they next went into a recording studio to make a new album.

Chieftains 2 was again well received and by now the band were developing a small but devoted following.

Moloney described how those first two albums started to attract the more avant garde people on the London scene, as well as hippies and young people who considered themselves into Flower Power.

Rubbing shoulders with the Entertainment Elite

The Chieftains played their first concert in the United States in 1972 at the Irish Arts Theater in New York. They followed that up with tours of the US in 1973 and 1974, even though they were still only semi-professional and had to beg and cajole their bosses for time off work.

Meanwhile, the band were attracting the attention of other musicians and leading lights in the film world. Peter Sellers became a fan after meeting Paddy Moloney in 1966 at the house of the late Brian Jones, the Rolling Stones guitarist.

Sellers went on to write the sleeve notes on Chieftains 4. The Rolling Stones and Marianne Faithfull later went on to record with The Chieftains.

Chieftains 3 and 4, and the arrival of the harp

Chieftains 3 was released in 1971 but by the time the band were ready to record another album in 1973, Moloney wanted to add a new dimension in the form a harp.

The Irish harpist Derek Bell was a member of the BBC orchestra in Belfast and had played with The Chieftains several times. He joined them on a more permanent basis in time for the recording of Chieftains 4, although he still kept performing with BBC.

A sell-out concert at the Albert Hall

After turning fully professional in 1975, the band played a sell-out concert at the Albert Hall in London. It signalled their arrival as a full-time band to be reckoned with.

Chieftains albums 5, 6 and 7 soon followed to continuing critical acclaim and growing commercial success.

As the end of the 1970s approached, there were to be changes to the line-up on the band. Sean Potts and Michael Tubridy left and Matt Molloy, formerly with The Bothy Band and Planxty arrived, to play flute.

Breakthrough appearance on American television

In 1986, The Chieftains appeared on The Today Show in the United States.

It was another major breakthrough for them as it brought them to the attention of millions of viewers and helped to establish them in America.

The band were now enjoying the kind of commercial success their talents and their hard worked deserved.

Chieftains legacy is revival of Irish instrumental music

Before The Chieftains, most people’s idea of Irish traditional music was the kind of material being performed by bands like The Dubliners and The Clancy Brothers.

Those bands were brilliant, of course, but their repertoires were made up mainly of songs. In the early sixties, instrumental arrangements of Irish music had all but died out.

The Chieftains changed all that. They single-handedly created a taste and a market for high quality instrumental music. In the process, they recorded approximately 50 albums, including six Grammy winners, picked up an Oscar or two plus numerous other awards and played at some of the major venues all over the world.

Not bad for a bunch of lads who started out with nothing and had to wait 12 years before they could turn professional.

will the chieftains tour again

The Chieftains are highly recognized for reinventing traditional Irish music on a contemporary and International scale. The Chieftains were formed in Ireland in 1962 by Paddy Moloney, the top traditional folk musician in Ireland and around the world. Their ability to transcend musical boundaries and blend tradition with modern music has notably hailed them as one of the most renowned and revered musical groups to this day. After more than fifty seven years of making some of the most beautiful music in the world, The Chieftains' music remains as fresh and relevant as when they first began. And now they will bring their music once again on tour to the US in 2020 called, ‘The Irish Goodbye.’

What is an Irish Goodbye you may ask? Dictionary.com states that an Irish Goodbye is sneaking out of a party without telling anyone. But some people disagree. They say that an Irish person can’t be the last one to leave the party without hours of long conversations, a few sing alongs and elaborate keening farewells. So you may have to guess which definition fits this tour. Are they leaving us or are the staying around for a few more songs?

Paddy Moloney says, “It’ll be fantastic to return once again to America where we are always welcomed with open arms. We’ll share a lively evening of music, stories, laughter and great craic! In each city we will perform with local Pipe and Drum bands, Irish Dance schools, choirs and special guests – the whole shebang! It’s always fun to showcase local talent to their hometown crowds.”

Paddy finishes with, “Our US fans continue to give us the warmest of welcomes, so it’s going to be a huge pleasure to play once again for all our friends.”

The Chieftains Will Tour U.S.

February 1, 2003 by Leave a Comment

will the chieftains tour again

After celebrating 40 years together, then unexpectedly suffering a great loss of long-time member, and friend Derek Bell, the Chieftains are taking to the road again for the 41st U.S. tour, in dedication to Bell who died this past October.

The band’s 30-city tour kicks-off on January 13th in the southwest and culminates in New York City on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17). Pop Cellist Caroline LaVelle will stand in for Bell. Sets will include a Bell tribute, bluegrass and classic Chieftains.

The tour will take place hot on the heels of one of the group’s most successful album releases, Down the Old Plank Road, with guest artists to include Peter Gabriel, Muse, Indigo Girls, The Cranberries Allison Moorer and bluegrass standout Chris Jones.

Down the Old Plank Road: The Nashville Sessions, released in September on RCA Victor Group, celebrates the ties that bind Ireland’s enduring musical heritage to the heartland of America. The album features the Chieftains alongside some of country music’s biggest stars, including Vince Gill, Martina McBride, Lyle Lovett, and Patty Griffin. Legendary instrumentalist Earl Scruggs as well as the eclectic Bela Fleck are also highlighted, as are bluegrass virtuosos Del McCoury, Ricky Skaggs, Alison Krauss, and Jeff White. Down the Old Plank Road also spotlights special guests John Hiatt along with the duos Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings and Buddy and Julie Miller.

The recording, produced by Chieftains founder Paddy Maloney, has received major critical acclaim. According to the Dallas Morning News, “The Chieftains came to the mountain, and the mountain recognized its kin. It is one glorious front porch jam session.” ♦

Masters Provides a Respite to the LIV Golf–PGA Tour Divide, Which Still Has No End in Sight

  • Author: Bob Harig

More Weekly Read: Tiger's plight | Aberg shows out | Bryson's Masters turnaround

AUGUSTA, Ga. — There is still an appetite for men’s professional golf, it seems. Perhaps the Masters attracted all the fans that stayed away during the early part of 2024. Maybe it was because the stars of the game came together for the first time. It could be a combination of both.

But the malaise that has hovered over the game in recent months as the PGA Tour/LIV Golf divide sees no end suggests that the biggest tournaments in the game will still attract a big audience and that—just maybe—golf fans don’t like the fact there is division.

“Absolutely,” Rory McIlroy said. “The Masters stands alone in terms of every other golf tournament, but I think even in terms of the ratings the first two days on ESPN looked like they were up, which is a sign that when we're all back together, then golf thrives. When we're divided, it doesn't. That's just another example of why we should all try to put our heads together and get back together.”

ESPN reported its first two rounds were the highest since 2015. McIlroy, who has been saying for months he believes a deal between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia—which backs LIV Golf—is crucial, has suggested that all the bickering and money talked has turned off fans to regular events.

There is some anecdotal evidence to support his claims, along with TV ratings that have been off about 20 percent but could also be attributed to other factors such as weather or lack star power in tournaments. And that could be viewed as a watered down PGA Tour with players such as Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau playing for LIV Golf. However, CBS's final-round viewership for Sunday's final round at Augusta was down 20% from last year's final round , which fell on Easter Sunday.

Bryson DeChambeau reacts to his putt on the 15th hole during the third round of the 2024 Masters.

Having stars such as Bryson DeChambeau and Max Homa together at the Masters was a welcome sight.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Network

DeChambeau stepped up at the Masters, leading after the first round and eventually tying for sixth. Cam Smith, Tyrrell Hatton and Patrick Reed had good weeks, even if they were never in contention. And the idea that it would be good to have these players competing against the likes of McIlroy and Masters winner Scottie Scheffler more often—regardless of how we got here—seems to be gaining more traction.

The problem: a deal does not appear close.

Tiger Woods, who met with the governor of the PIF, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, last month in the Bahamas via a round of golf along with the rest of the player directors on the PGA Tour Policy Board, said Sunday the meeting was positive but “I don’t know if we’re closer.”

That was certainly the vibe that board members Webb Simpson and Peter Malnati elicited last month following that meeting.

And Rahm, who was LIV’s biggest signing, said at his pre-Masters news conference that his decision to make the move came with confidence that there would be some quick resolution.

“I understood that it could be, what I hoped, a step towards some kind of agreement, yes,” he said. “Or more of an agreement or expedited agreement.

“But unfortunately, it’s not up to me. But I would hope it would be something that would help expedite that process. But at the end of the day, I still did what I thought was best for myself.”

Lots of talk. Very little known action. Another month has passed since the Bahamas meeting and the golf calendar gets extremely busy now. It’s difficult to expect player directors to be focused on all these matters with important tournaments coming fast and furious.

And yet, the governance now is in place that gives the players a final say in any potential deal. While it’s impossible to think they could be involved in the nitty-gritty details, they also need to know what’s going on in order to make any kind of legitimate assessment.

A path to a resolution does not appear any clearer.

Will Beyoncé announce the 'Cowboy Carter' tour? Fans think she may be hitting the road again soon

  • Beyoncé released her new album "Cowboy Carter" on Friday.
  • Some fans think she's gearing up to tour again, though many say they don't have the funds to attend.
  • The Renaissance World Tour wrapped last October in Kansas City. It was hailed as a must-see event.

Insider Today

Less than a year after the Renaissance World Tour wrapped, it might already be time for the Beyhive to dust off their boots and head back out to see Beyoncé live again.

The Renaissance World Tour was hailed as a once-in-a-lifetime event , a bona fide status symbol , and a blockbuster concert movie that awed audiences while near-singlehandedly boosting AMC's revenue . The 56-show run wrapped on October 1, 2023, in Kansas City.

On its heels, Beyoncé has released her new album " Cowboy Carter ." The triumphant country-inspired project is billed as "Act II" in a three-part "Renaissance" series.

So it would stand to reason — financially and thematically — that Beyoncé would plan another tour leg for "Cowboy Carter."

Her team seemed to hint that something is coming by launching a new website, " Been Country ." The landing page shows a photo of young Beyoncé performing at the Texas Sweetheart Pageant, as well as a childhood photo of her mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson , and an image of a banjo.

A fan account on Instagram shared a rumor that the tour announcement is scheduled for Friday, exactly one week after the album's arrival. Knowles-Lawson liked the post, adding more fuel to the rumor's flame.

Beyoncé's longtime collaborator The-Dream, who produced 10 of the new album's 27 tracks, also alluded to a forthcoming tour. He celebrated the release of "Cowboy Carter" on X, writing, "This tour bout to B' Incredible!"

Fans grabbed screenshots of The-Dream's post, though it has since been deleted.

However, the six-month turnaround since Beyoncé's last concert does cast suspicion on these theories. Thanks to "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé," we know the Renaissance World Tour took four years to ideate and execute.

It's unclear if plans for a "Cowboy Carter" show were also in the works during that time, but if not, fans may have to wait a bit longer to watch Beyoncé perform. As she's already made clear, " A queen moves at her own pace ."

Even so, a delay may come as welcome news, even for dedicated members of the Beyhive.

Many fans have been posting about their lack of ticket funds on X, playfully begging Beyoncé to put off touring until next year.

Representatives for Beyoncé did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Odds Outlook: Scottie Scheffler man to beat (again) at RBC Heritage

Golfbet News

Change Text Size

Following the first major championship of the season, the fifth of eight Signature Events on the 2024 FedExCap calendar tees off at Harbour Town Golf Links. It’s time for the RBC Heritage, where there is a familiar name atop the oddsboard.

Scottie Scheffler (+400 at BetMGM Sportsbook) arrives in the South Carolina Lowcountry with another green jacket added to his collection, and he headlines the 69-man field for the no-cut event. The world No. 1 has been beaten by exactly one player in his last four outings. Joining Tiger Woods as the only player to win THE PLAYERS Championship and the Masters Tournament in the same season, the Texan’s wife is due any day with their first child and remarked frequently that he will be there for the delivery. Making his tournament debut in 2023, he posted four rounds at 70 or better, ranked in the top eight in fairways and greens hit, and finished T11.

After cashing his 12th top-10 payday in just his 27th major championship start Xander Schauffele (+1100) , returns to Harbour Town looking to improve on his solo fourth result from 2023, his best effort from four weekend attempts. Picking up top-10 results in majors, Signature Events, or any tournament, has been the bill of goods this season. The Californian has teed it up nine times and has found the top 10 seven times. Taking home the check for solo eighth place at Augusta National Golf ran his streak to three.

The incredible year of firsts for Ludvig Åberg (+1200) added another chapter to his legendary status last week. Playing in his first major championship, the Swedish star led the Masters (albeit briefly) on the weekend before finishing solo second. Any lingering questions about his make-up, mentally or physically, were answered last week. On one of the most demanding tracks used all season, he was the only player to post a round in the 60s during Friday’s difficult conditions. Sunday, after making double on No. 11, he rallied to birdie Nos. 13 and 14 to run back up the leaderboard, but eventually fell short of Scheffler.

Making just his third appearance at Harbour Town Golf Links and his first since the summer of 2020, a walk on the beach for Rory McIlroy (+1200) might be what the doctor ordered. The pressure cooker of Augusta National and trying to complete the career Grand Slam will follow him for another 360 days. Making more bogeys than birdies, his 16th visit to the Masters left him with more questions than answers. The driver, his weapon of choice, was responsible for locating just 36 of 56 fairways. The irons didn’t hold up after the big finish two Sundays ago in San Antonio. Finding only 37 of 72 Greens in Regulation (GIR), he was on the defense most of the week. The tight conditions off the tees and into the greens, the second smallest on TOUR behind Pebble Beach Golf Links, not to mention water on all 18 holes, will need a major refocus from the four-time major winner.

Rory McIlroy finishes third at Valero for his highest PGA TOUR finish of 2024

Tommy Fleetwood (+1800) joined an exclusive club Sunday at Augusta. Cashing a share of fourth, he joins a handful of players who have registered in the top five in all four major championships since 2017. The next step for the Englishman is to win on U.S. soil. Playing Harbour Town for the fourth consecutive season after the Masters, he’s 22 under on his last two visits, both resulting in T15 or better paydays. Posting all four rounds at par or better, just one of three players last week to accomplish that feat, he was second in Fairways, T7 GIR and 10th in Putting.

With only one top-10 paycheck from eight events played this season, Patrick Cantlay (+1800) will be encouraged to see the red and white stripes encompassing the 90-foot-tall Harbour Town Lighthouse. While it may not be a beacon in use for ships adrift, the Californian knows it means his game will safely return. Making the cut in five of six visits, he has cashed outside the podium once. Missing a playoff last year by a shot, he was defeated in a playoff in 2022. The only mementos missing from his visits are a tartan jacket and a trophy.

Defeating 2022 champion Jordan Spieth (+2500) in a playoff last year, Matt Fitzpatrick (+2000) added his name to the list of winners in his ninth attempt. A family vacation destination in his youth, the Englishman is more than comfortable on the Pete Dye links layout and has played annually since 2016. A streak of top-10 paydays (solo fifth-T10) was snapped with T22 last week. Rumblings about his short irons not being able to spin correctly didn’t help navigate the difficult Augusta National green complexes.

Collin Morikawa (+2200) reintroduced himself to the world of golf with another top-five in a major championship. Producing his first top-10 payout since The Sentry to open 2024, the PGA and Open champion found something last week to kick his game into gear. Hovering around the lead late on Saturday and into the final 10 holes on Sunday before cashing T4 should put a spring back in his step. Missing only 10 fairways (T3) and hitting 50 of 72 GIR (third) is the evidence gamers were patiently waiting to see again. The next step is taking it to Hilton Head Island this week.

With back-to-back top-10 finishes in his last two major championships, Max Homa (+2200) is rounding into the complete player. Playing from the penultimate pairing Sunday, he posted 73 to share third, his best result in a major championship. Flushing shots from tee to green, he co-led the field in GIR and was T6 Fairways. Making only his second start in April at Harbour Town, he will play the weekend for the first time in this no-cut event.

There’s also a second PGA TOUR event this week, as an Additional Event will head to the Dominican Republic for the Corales Puntacana Championship. Nicolai Hojgaard (+1400) opens as a betting favorite there, having briefly held the outright lead at Augusta National before a T16 finish in his Masters debut. Other notable odds in the Caribbean include Alex Noren (+1400), Billy Horschel (+2000) and Aaron Rai (+2200).

Here's a look at the remaining Heritage odds via BetMGM to round out the 69-man field in South Carolina:

  • +2500: Jordan Spieth (2022 winner), Will Zalatoris, Wyndham Clark
  • +2800: Cameron Young

  • +4500: Corey Conners, Shane Lowry

  • +6600: Cam Davis, Harris English, J.T. Poston, Sepp Straka, Sungjae Im, Taylor Moore, Tom Kim, Matthieu Pavon
  • +8000: Adam Schenk, Brendon Todd, Keegan Bradley, Lucas Glover, Stephan Jaeger, Tom Hoge
  • +9000: Kurt Kitayama
  • +10000: Adam Hadwin, Erik van Rooyen, Mackenzie Hughes, Nick Taylor, Rickie Fowler, Thomas Detry

  • +20000: Adam Svensson, Jake Knapp, Lee Hodges, Nick Dunlap, Seamus Power
  • +25000: Chandler Phillips, Peter Malnati, Webb Simpson (2020 winner)
  • +30000: Erik Barnes, Gary Woodland
  • +35000: Alejandro Tosti, Brice Garnett
  • +40000: Grayson Murray
  • +75000: Kevin Kisner

  • 72-hole, no-cut event.
  • The purse of $20 million will pay first place $3.6 million.
  • The winner also receives 700 FedExCup points.

17 Again Came Out 15 Years Ago Today and You'll Never Guess Who Zac Efron Hung with at the Premiere

Zac Efron traveled the globe to promote his 2009 favorite, which costarred Matthew Perry

17 Again can finally go to high school.

The beloved Zac Efron and Matthew Perry film — which debuted on April 17, 2024 — follows the story of Perry's Mike O'Donnell, who gets a second chance at his younger days as he's transformed back into a high schooler (played by Efron). The movie made $136 million worldwide and was a favorite among fans, holding an extra special place in hearts since Perry's shocking death last year.

When the movie was coming out, though, it was Efron who traveled the globe, stopping in what feels like every big city imaginable to promote the film. And along the way, he met up with some famous friends and fans — including one Taylor Swift .

On the film's 15th anniversary, look back on these photos of a young Zac Efron (he was 21 at the time!) on the global 17 Again press tour.

Sydney, Australia

Zac Efron kicked off the 2009 17 Again press tour Down Under, premiering the film at Sydney's Hoyts Cinema on March 11.

While there, he linked up with none other than Taylor Swift, who was doing a week of concerts in Australia before launching her Fearless tour stateside.

The megastars posed for a photo together before the film began.

Paris, France

Pascal Le Segretain/Getty

Two weeks later Zac Efron popped up in Paris, channeling Troy Bolton for a photo call at the Hôtel Plaza Athénée on March 24.

London, England

Gareth Cattermole/Getty

On March 26 he brought the film to London. While shooting the movie, "the girls would come out of class and scream through the windows," costar Melora Hardin recalled to PEOPLE at the time. "Zac is truly dreamy."

Dave Hogan/Getty

The London premiere took place at the Odeon West End.

Beverly Hills, California

Next it was on to Los Angeles, with an April 5 press day offering the perfect moment for his then-signature hairstyle. "It's amazing; there's so much emphasis put on my hair," he told PEOPLE at the time. "It's not a big deal. The day a director tells me to cut it, it's gone."

Hollywood, California

The big L.A. premiere came on April 14 at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, where fans lined the streets to get a glimpse of the film's stars.

Stars Michelle Trachtenberg , Zac Efron, Leslie Mann and Matthew Perry posed for photos together on the red carpet.

Michelle Trachtenberg and Zac Efron shared a sweet moment amidst the chaos.

In such a 2009 moment, the finalists of that year's season of American Idol came to the carpet and posed for pics with Zac Efron.

His High School Musical bestie Corbin Bleu came out to support him, too.

Oh and the Jonas Brothers were at the afterparty.

Then it was back to Europe, where Zac Efron premiered 17 Again to adoring fans on April 26.

Sean Gallup/Getty

Seriously, every 17 Again red carpet pretty much looked like this.

Speaking to PEOPLE in 2009, Zac Efron said at 17 he was "a kid who has no idea what he's in for. I was not the coolest kid in school, but I wasn't a total pariah. I fell somewhere in between. I wore goofy hats to school and did musical theater. Most people thought I was a total weirdo. I was the coolest of the nerds."

Madrid, Spain

Carlos Alvarez/Getty

On April 28, Zac Efron was mad for plaid in Madrid.

In PEOPLE's review of the film, our critic wrote, "Tween and teenage girls everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief. Efron, their dreamboat from the High School Musical franchise, can easily carry a movie on his skinny shoulders. He shows a breezy self-assurance and considerable comic chops in 17 Again ."

The April 28 Madrid premiere brought a sleeker style from the star.

Fotonoticias/WireImage

"He was so funny and so smart that it was almost a little depressing," costar Thomas Lennon told PEOPLE ahead of the film's release. "The kid is already gorgeous — can't he suck at something?"

Tokyo, Japan

Junko Kimura/Getty

At long last, Zac Efron's whirlwind 17 Again press tour wound down in Japan on May 14.

Universal City, California

Frazer Harrison/Getty

But the film stayed with him long after! At the 2009 Teen Choice Awards in August of that year, Zac Efron took home the choice movie actor award for 17 Again.

"This is very special for me guys, this is a huge honor," he said in his speech, before adding to the crowd, "Don't be afraid: seize the moment."
