  • All Regions
  • 27 Sep 2022

Positive transformation for both people and planet was the central message of World Tourism Day 2022. Held around the theme of ‘Rethinking Tourism’, the Global Day of Observation emphasized the sector’s unique potential to drive recovery and deliver positive change for people everywhere.

Hosted by the Republic of Indonesia , in the popular destination of Bali, the official celebrations brought together leaders from across the public and private sector, including the largest and most diverse number of Ministers of Tourism in the history of World Tourism Day . They were joined by tourism stakeholders around the world celebrating in their own countries, united around the timely theme of rethinking and transforming the sector.

Seizing the opportunity

Opening the celebrations, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili stressed the unique opportunity presented to tourism to pause, reflect and recalibrate. He said: “The restart of tourism everywhere brings hope. It is the ultimate cross-cutting and people-to-people sector. It touches on almost everything we do – and everything we care about. Tourism’s potential is now recognized more widely than ever. It’s up to us to deliver on this potential.”

Tourism’s potential is now recognized more widely than ever. It’s up to us to deliver on this potential

Joining UNWTO in emphasizing the potential of tourism to deliver wide-reaching change, the Minister of Tourism for the Republic of Indonesia, Sandiaga Uno, noted: “The most important assets in tourism are its people and the planet. We must ensure the best support for both.” In Bali, UNWTO commended Indonesia for going beyond words and taking concrete steps to transform tourism, notably by becoming the first country in the Asia and the Pacific region to sign up to the ambitious Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism and its goals to reach Net-Zero emissions for the sector by 2050 at the latest.

Also adding his voice to the celebrations, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said: “Tourism has the power to foster inclusion, protect nature & promote cultural understanding. We must rethink and reinvent the sector to ensure its sustainability.”

World Tourism Day Report Launched

To mark the day, UNWTO launched its first World Tourism Day Report, the first in an annual series of updates and analysis of the Organization’s work guiding the sector forward. The inaugural report is titled “ Rethinking Tourism: From Crisis to Transformation ”, reflecting the timely relevance of the 2022 theme as well as the unprecedented crisis that hit the sector in 2020.

The report charts UNWTO’s work uniting the sector in the face of crisis, leading tourism’s response and laying the foundations for a more inclusive and resilient future, with updates on work in every global region as well as in key areas including gender equality, sustainability and climate action, tourism governance and investments and innovation.

UNWTO Delivers Guidelines to G20

On the eve of World Tourism Day, UNWTO also presented the G20 Guidelines on Strengthening MSMEs and Communities as Agents of Transformation in Tourism on the occasion of the G20 Tourism Ministers Meeting in Bali . The Guidelines provide guidance for key policies that can create resilient and sustainable MSMEs and communities around the pillars of human capital, innovation, youth and women empowerment, climate action, and policy, governance and investments. They also draw up over 40 cases studies from G20 members and guest countries focused on the promotion of MSMEs and communities.

Joining UNWTO in Bali for the World Tourism Day celebrations were Ministers of Tourism of Indonesia, as well as of the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Republic of Korea, Fiji, Spain, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, alongside the Vice Ministers of Tourism for Cambodia and Japan and high-level representatives from Germany, Canada and the United States of America.

World Tourism Day 2022: ShareTrip – Revolutionising travel in Bangladesh

From the world’s longest natural sea beach to the Buddhist Vihara ruins at Paharpur, Naogaon and hundreds more such examples, Bangladesh is filled with scenic wonders worth witnessing. This World Tourism Day, the country’s leading Online Travel Agency (OTA),  ShareTrip  , is all set to revolutionize travel in Bangladesh, putting our tourism sector up on the world stage.

As part of Bangladesh’s march towards becoming an innovative and knowledge-based economy by 2041[1], ShareTrip, backed by the Government’s flagship venture capital firm, Startup Bangladesh, is working to digitise travel. Through this partnership, ShareTrip is actively looking to bridge the existing gaps within the tourism industry. From empowering remote entrepreneurs to informing customers on how to travel digitally at a bargain – ShareTrip is doing it all.

The exhaustion of running from one place to another in search of the best deals often becomes demotivating for travellers. Hence, ShareTrip has been working to change the perspective through its tech-based solutions. Be it visa processing, hotels, flights, itinerary or extensive packages – the ShareTrip app does it all! Moreover, with a laser focus on customer experience, ShareTrip ensures that the journey seems as pleasurable as the destination.

On top of that, ShareTrip recognizes the importance of keeping its employees motivated. Hence, the leading OTA is transforming what it means to work in the travel industry by nurturing a culture of innovation, where employees can enjoy an array of additional benefits. Consequently, ShareTrip’s employees remain motivated, working efficiently to meet all customer needs.

Honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina established Startup Bangladesh, a Venture Capital company, with the advice of the architect of Digital Bangladesh, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, ICT affairs adviser to the honourable Prime Minister. Under this ‘Digital Bangladesh’ vision, we are creating the Startup ecosystem in Bangladesh. We have a plan to allocate 500 crores to our Startups. We hope that together, we can keep nurturing the future potential unicorns of Bangladesh.”

Zunaid Ahmed Palak MP, Minister of State for Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, said, “We have only explored about 20% of the travel market industry in Bangladesh, while about 80% of this potential market remains unexplored. Foreigners and tourists are unaware of these beautiful destinations. I hope with Startup Bangladesh’s backing ShareTrip the country’s tourism industry will also grow at the same pace.

Catering to the offline nature of travel in Bangladesh, many are still missing out on the existing growth opportunities within the market. There is still a greater scope to leverage the internet penetration boom to grow the travel industry.

Sadia Haque, CEO of ShareTrip, said, “Nowadays, planning a trip mostly translates to using smartphones and laptops, indicating the right time for an  Online Travel Agency . As avid travellers, we initiated our journey to contribute to the tourism industry through digitisation. No matter where you are, easily access  ShareTrip Flight  and get confirmation instantly. To cater fellow travellers accomodation needs, we have  ShareTrip Hotel  even on the remote corner of Bangladesh. The investment from Startup Bangladesh Limited further motivates us to march with longer strides towards a dream of minimizing the existing gap between offline and online travel services, building a simple and inclusive travel ecosystem”.

Startup Bangladesh’s investment in a leading tech-based travel company exemplifies its determination to revolutionize tourism in Bangladesh. Not only will this transform the concept of travel in Bangladesh, but it can also contribute greatly to the Bangladeshi economy. Since its inception, ShareTrip has been working relentlessly to transform the entire travel ecosystem of the country. As part of such efforts, ShareTrip and Startup Bangladesh join hands to take Sheikh Mujib’s Bangladesh to a global standard this World Tourism Day.

World Tourism Day: Master plan to explore potential tourist spots in the offing

The Dhaka University Tourist Society, and Tourism Student Association have arranged weeklong programmes of different flavours to celebrate the day, while different hotels, and motels announced various offers

Rumi Kawser

Despite the possibilities, due to lack of a proper development plan, and promotion, many potential tourist spots in Bangladesh   remain untapped.

While local tourists and travel groups continue to explore such places in the hills, forests, and lesser known sites of the country, there is little government initiative to promote such spots.

Against this backdrop, Bangladesh, alongside other countries around the globe, will celebrate World Tourism Day on Friday with a theme of "Tourism and Jobs: A Better Future for All."

Officials at the Bangladesh Tourism Board (BTB), and Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry said, even though Bangladesh is a land of diversified cultures, and natural beauty suited to tourism, red-tapism and the absence of a master plan has not allowed this sector to flourish to its fullest potential.

Sakia Haque, founder of Travelers of Bangladesh (TOB), the largest online tourist platform in the country, which has over one million members, told Dhaka Tribune that though there are hundreds of spots in Bangladesh which can become great tourist destinations, little information is available to tourists regarding these sites.

“Due to lack of information and promotion, tourist destinations in Bangladesh are failing to attract visitors,” she added.

However, countering this statement, BTB CEO Bhubon Chandra Biswas said: "We require authorization from at least 21 ministries to take any steps regarding tourism, which creates delay in taking necessary initiatives for any potential sites, for it to get explored by tourists."

A master plan to unlock possibilities

Bangladesh Tourism Board was formed in 2010 to develop the country's tourism sector, and increase its contribution to the economy, however it has failed to put together a master plan in the last nine years to advance the sector by attracting foreign tourists.

However, a process has finally begun to develop a master plan so that the country's tourism sector gets the forward push that it needs.

Meanwhile, short, medium, and long term planning has been made for exploring the full potential of Bangladesh’s untapped tourism sector, said State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Mahbub Ali.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary M Mohibul Haque said, a global consultant firm will receive the work order to formulate the master plan by October 7.

Separate exclusive tourism plans targeting Sundarbans, Cox’s Bazar, and the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) will be made too, he added.

What does the future hold?

The major aim of the master plan will be to develop the tourism sector as a whole, and promotion thereof.

There will be an exclusive tourism zone, solely for foreign tourists in Sabrang upazila in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar,  the longest unbroken sandy beach, with all the modern day facilities.

Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority is already developing Sabrang Tourism Park - first ever seafront tourism park in Bangladesh - encompassing an area of 1027 acres. It is also developing a project tilted Naf Tourism Park, and Sonadia Eco Tourism Park - both in Cox’s Bazar.

Responding to a query, BTB secretary Biswas said that setting up casinos for foreigners depends on demand, and the country's law, adding that they have plans to set up a river cruise service for Dhaka dwellers, where six rivers around the capital - Buriganga, Turag, Balu, Shitalakkhya, Dhaleshwari, and Bangshi- will be connected together.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary M Mohibul Haque said they are introducing Advance Passenger Information System Software by June 2020 to get the exact statistics on foreign tourists travelling to Bangladesh.

"The law of the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation will be updated, while there will be laws for tour operators, and tour guides to move the sector forward.

"For skilled workforce in the sector, National Hotel and Tourism Training Institute will be modernized, where five-year courses on tourism will be offered," he added.

BTB chief Biswas requested the private sector to work more actively, and collaborate with the government to develop the sector.

Bangladesh Tourism in Global Ranking

Bangladesh is the 120th nation among 140 countries in the world as a tourist friendly country, according to “Travel and Tourism Competitive Report-2019” by the World Economic Forum.

It was in the 125th position a year ago.

However the situation is not much appreciated as only Pakistan, with the position of 121th is below Bangladesh in South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) nations. India ranked 34, Sri Lanka ranked 77, and Nepal 102 in the report.

In 2018, Lonely Planet – the world's largest travel guide book publisher – showcased Bangladesh as the best-in-value travel destination for 2019, ranking it at 7th in their list of the top 10 places for affordable adventures.

The government and different organizations have chalked out weeklong programs in all districts to celebrate the day.
