About Wu-Tang Clan

Founded in New York City’s Staten Island in the early 1990s, the Wu-Tang Clan is comprised of members RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, U-God, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, Cappadonna, and the deceased Ol’ Dirty Bastard (ODB). Their name is a reference to a 1983 martial arts film.

Led by the production of RZA, samples from martial arts films have thematically appeared throughout the group’s music, as have samples of classic funk and soul tracks from artists like Rick James, James Brown, and Syl Johnson. As a group, Wu-Tang Clan have three platinum albums among their eight LPs, and the group’s complete anthology (including solo albums) has more than 85 full-length releases. More than just rappers, Wu-Tang Clan are entrepreneurs and successful cultural influencers, with an empire that features everything from clothing lines and video games to books and acting credits.

Wu-Tang Clan on Tour Considered by many to be the greatest hip-hop group of all time, Wu-Tang Clan have been touring as a unit since their debut record — Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) — came out in 1993. The now triple-platinum release vaulted the New York City group with songs like “C.R.E.A.M.” (Cash Rules Everything Around Me) and “Protect Ya Neck” that are about as recognizable as anything in the rap canon.

Their live sets are a family affair, with every member of the crew representing their lyrical contributions to the Wu’s eight studio albums, as well as notable cuts from the Wu-Tang solo discography. With the omnipresent Wu-Tang “W” flanking all angles of the stage, there’s a familiarity to Wu-Tang Clan’s music that gives their shows unique mass appeal.

Whether they’re delivering the 36 Chambers record front to back on the album’s 25th Anniversary Tour, or tracks from GZA’s seminal Liquid Swords and Raekwon’s mafioso-minded Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, or honoring the legacy of their departed brother, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, every Wu-Tang Clan show is a celebration of prolific careers as individuals and especially as the most storied group in hip-hop history.

The album was entirely produced by Hit-Boy, and Gabriel “G Code” Zardes serves as the albums co-executive producer. The album won “Best Rap Album” at the 2021 GRAMMYs, marking Nas’ first ever GRAMMY win.

The album earned a nomination for “Best Rap Album” at the upcoming 64th GRAMMY Awards. Most recently, Nas released a surprise album titled Magic featuring A$AP Rocky and DJ Premier.

In addition to his successful career in music, Nas has pursued a career in motion pictures that began with his co-starring role (alongside DMX) in 1998’s cult classic crime drama  Belly , a film by director Hype Williams (with whom Nas has done several music videos). Most recently, he was the executive producer of the 2016 Netflix series  The Get Down .

Nas is also the co-founder of Mass Appeal Records.

Wu-Tang Clan and NAS: A Hip-Hop Spectacular Comes to AC

By Theresa Veronica Kennedy, Writer

On a remarkable Friday night, Sept. 29, history and hip-hop converged at Jim Whelan's Historic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. It was a night that celebrated not just the timeless artistry of Wu-Tang Clan and NAS but also marked a milestone in the annals of hip-hop. The anticipation had been building since Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small, Sr. announced this monumental event back in February, promising to deliver exceptional urban entertainment. And deliver they did, with a collaboration among the Small Administration, CRDA, and Live Nation that brought hip-hop royalty to the famed Boardwalk Hall for the Wu-Tang Clan & NAS: NY State of Mind tour.

wu tang tour atlantic city

A Night of Legends

The concert was nothing short of legendary. While the advertising may have mentioned Wu-Tang Clan and NAS, the night unfolded with a star-studded roster of iconic 90's hip-hop legends gracing the stage. Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, RZA, GZA, and U-God, all members of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan, took their turns in the spotlight. Joining them was NAS, whose lyrical prowess and influence on the genre are second to none.

But the surprises didn't stop there. The night evolved into a journey through the rich tapestry of hip-hop history, as additional legendary performers made their presence felt. De La Soul and Talib Kweli, both iconic figures in their own right, brought their unique flavors to the stage, elevating the concert to an even higher echelon of hip-hop greatness. It was a night that celebrated not just the music but the culture and the artistry that have defined hip-hop for generations.

Celebrating Hip-Hop's Anniversary

The artists themselves paid homage to hip-hop's history. Throughout the evening, the concert reverberated with the celebration of the anniversary of hip-hop, a genre that was born in the Bronx in the 1970s. Hip-hop has transcended borders and cultures, leaving an indelible mark on American culture and shaping world culture as well. From Japan to South Africa, from France to Brazil, hip-hop's influence is undeniable, inspiring countless artists and empowering marginalized voices.

Wu-Tang Clan and NAS, two of the evening's headlining acts, have left an indelible mark on hip-hop, each with a storied career spanning decades. Wu-Tang Clan, formed in 1992 and catapulted into the limelight with their iconic debut album "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" in 1993, has now been actively shaping the hip-hop landscape for over 30 years. NAS, also known as NASir Jones, emerged on the scene with his groundbreaking album "Illmatic" in 1994, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey through the world of hip-hop that has spanned nearly 29 years. This concert served as a testament to their enduring influence and longevity in the genre.

Mayor's Announcement and Collaboration

wu tang tour atlantic city

The seeds of excitement for the Wu-Tang Clan and NAS concert were sown on Feb. 27, 2023, when Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small, Sr. took to Facebook to share the groundbreaking news. In his post, he declared, "🚨BREAKING NEWS…SHARE🚨 We told y’all we would deliver on Urban Entertainment…Another Small Administration, CRDA & Live Nation Collaboration to bring MAJOR Events to The GREAT City of Atlantic City…Friday Night September 29th…WU-TANG & NAS…Boardwalk HallA Atlantic City…🗣️Can We Say GREAT Day‼️ Talk to me Modia Butler #teamsmall #mayorsmall #cityofatlanticcity #wealwaysworking #itsagreatdayhereinthecityofatlanticcity #canwesaygreatday #wejustgettingstarted."

This post by the mayor underscores the collaborative effort involving the Small Administration, CRDA, and Live Nation to bring major events to Atlantic City. It reflects the city's commitment to delivering top-tier urban entertainment to its residents and visitors.

Special Encounters and Family Vibes

The magic of the NAS and Wu-Tang Clan concert extended beyond the stage, even as we left the valet at Caesar's. There, I had the pleasure of meeting Young Dirty Bastard, the son of the legendary Old Dirty Bastard. His warmth and kindness in taking pictures with us added a personal touch to the night.

wu tang tour atlantic city

But the surprises didn't end there. As we ventured into Caesar's Resorts, we crossed paths with Method Man and his wife. Throughout the evening, the couple's love and affection for each other were palpable. Method Man's loving kiss to his wife, the first person he came to and gave a big hug and kiss, after his stage performance was a touching moment that showcased the enduring power of black love. It was as if we were witnessing a glimpse of their journey together, even after more than two decades of marriage.

wu tang tour atlantic city

The presence of these iconic rappers' families in Atlantic City, cheering them on alongside the crowd, created a heartwarming family vibe that resonated throughout the event. It was a reminder that the hip-hop community is not just about music; it's also about the bonds, love, and support that transcend the stage.

AI-Enhanced Visual Effects

One of the standout features of the concert's production was the innovative use of AI-generated images with motion. As the performers lit up the stage with their electrifying performances, these AI visuals served as a mesmerizing backdrop, creating a visual symphony that was both futuristic and captivating.

These cutting-edge visual effects not only complemented the music but also added a modern, tech-savvy dimension to the concert experience. The marriage of technology and artistry was evident as the AI images seamlessly danced in harmony with the music, enhancing the overall sensory journey for the audience.

wu tang tour atlantic city

It was a testament to how technology continues to push the boundaries of live performances, elevating them to new heights. The fusion of AI and hip-hop created a truly unique and unforgettable concert experience that left the audience in awe.

Khari Mosley's Facebook Post

wu tang tour atlantic city

Khari Mosley couldn't contain his excitement on Facebook, declaring, "The NAS Wu-Tang show in Atlantic City is absolutely banaNAS #HipHopIsAlive."

Khari's concise but powerful statement echoes the sentiments of many who attended the concert, emphasizing the vitality and enduring appeal of hip-hop music. It's a testament to the energy and impact of the performance, reaffirming that this concert was more than just an event—it was a celebration of the genre's continued vibrancy.

Atlantic City: The Entertainment Capital

As we reflect on this historic night, it's worth noting that Atlantic City has long been a hub for black entertainment. From the legendary Club Harlem to the vibrant scene along Kentucky Avenue, Atlantic City has played a pivotal role in showcasing and celebrating black talent. It's a city with a rich history of nurturing and promoting black artists, and this concert continued that tradition.

In conclusion, the Wu-Tang Clan and NAS concert in Atlantic City was more than just a musical event. It was a celebration of hip-hop's enduring legacy, a testament to the genre's global impact, and a reminder of the significance of black entertainment in Atlantic City's history. As the entertainment capital of the area, Atlantic City continues to shine as a beacon of cultural diversity and artistic expression, inviting audiences to celebrate the past, live in the present, and look forward to a future filled with more life-altering events.

WU TANG’S TIES TO SHAOLIN

Wu-Tang Clan was founded in the early 1990s, and is comprised of RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, U-God, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, Cappadonna. The late Ol’ Dirty Bastard (ODB) was a founding member.

As a group, Wu-Tang Clan has three platinum albums among its eight LPs; the group’s complete anthology — including solo albums — has more than 85 full-length releases.

Considered by many to be the greatest hip-hop group of all time, Wu-Tang Clan has been touring as a unit since its debut record, “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers),” came out in 1993. The now triple-platinum release vaulted the Staten Island group with songs like “C.R.E.A.M. (Cash Rules Everything Around Me)” and “Protect Ya Neck.”

Raekwon The Chef, who released his memoir, “From Staircase to Stage: The Story of Raekwon and Wu-Tang Clan,” spoke with the Advance/SILive.com late last year about his time growing up in the borough and what it was like founding one of the most influential musical groups in the world .

About Wu-Tang Clan

Founded in New York City's Staten Island in the early 1990s, the Wu-Tang Clan is comprised of members RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, U-God, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, Cappadonna, and the deceased Ol' Dirty Bastard (ODB). Their name is a reference to a 1983 martial arts film.

Led by the production of RZA, samples from martial arts films have thematically appeared throughout the group's music, as have samples of classic funk and soul tracks from artists like Rick James, James Brown, and Syl Johnson. As a group, Wu-Tang Clan have three platinum albums among their eight LPs, and the group's complete anthology (including solo albums) has more than 85 full-length releases. More than just rappers, Wu-Tang Clan are entrepreneurs and successful cultural influencers, with an empire that features everything from clothing lines and video games to books and acting credits.

Nas (Nasir Jones) first reached an international audience when his track “Halftime” was tapped by producer MC Serch as the opening cut on 1992’s Zebrahead movie soundtrack.  Signed to Columbia Records, the first full-length album by poet and rhyme-master Nas arrived in 1994, Illmatic .  The RIAA platinum hip-hop landmark featured “It Ain’t Hard To Tell,” “The World Is Yours,” and “One.”  1996 brought the breakthrough double-platinum It Was Written (#1 R&B for 7 weeks, #1 pop for 4 weeks), with his first major crossover singles “Street Dreams” and “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That).” Success continued with the double-platinum I Am in 1999 (again #1 pop and #1 R&B), with the chart singles “Nas Is Like,” “Hate Me Now” (featuring Puff Daddy), and “You Won’t See Me Tonight” (featuring Aaliyah).
