Trek 5000 OCLV - How do I date?

Can anyone tell me where to look on my just-purchased, used Trek 5000 OCLV to know it's year of manufacture? It has the epoxy bonded Aluminum forks.  

I can't help you with decoding trek serial numbers to get you an exact year, but I seem to recall they were being sold around 1989 to 1990 time frame before Trek abandoned monocoque frames for a couple years. Check yours very carefully for cracks, and if you don't know the history or it has been repainted, I'm not sure I'd want to ride it. Most 5000's cracked/broke. Trek, Colnago and Kestrel were still learning a great deal about making monocoque frames in those days, with Kestrel.  

Thanks for the reply. My reading around seemed to indicate the OCLV models were later than the 1st attempt 5000's, which is why I'm struggling to come up with a manufacture date. Regarding condition, it came gently used by a friend who has owned it a fairly long time, and seems to be in excellent, low mileage condition. Also came with Spinergy Rev X wheels.  

Help? I took a picture of the bike. After having seen some pictures of the 1989 Trek 5000, I'm inclined to think this is not one of those. However, I understand the differences between the 5xxx models over the years are almost all in the components, not the frame. PO swapped out the Bontrager wheels for these Spinergy Rev X's. Any suggestions on how to determine a year of manufacture is appreciate  

You could call Trek and give them the serial number. They should be able to tell you when the bike was built. Nice looking bike, BTW.  

Where can I find a serial number? I don't see anything on the bottom bracket.  

I took the bike to the local Trek store and they directed me to look on the rear dropouts for the numbers. I found the numbers. 68334-3R on the right side, and 58334-3 l on the left. I was surprised they didn't match, who knows, maybe I just can't read. Can anyone point me to a list of serial numbers so I can figure out what year this bike is?  

Call 920-478-2191 on Monday. Ask for Customer Service. Ask them to look up the SN (it's probably a 5 or 6 -- they are hard to read) and answer your question.

Trek 5020 How about a Trek 5020 (light brown) - any idea what vintage that might be? And I am concerned about the issue of frame cracking. Is it safe tor ride this bike? I got it as a hand me down from a friend who was moving out of the country.

Treks high end CF frame.

Issue with the bottom bracket that Trek doesn't tell you about

I raced mountain bikes and road bikes for about 8 years. Most of my training was on the road, with my first road bike a Lemond Alp Duez, from there I purchased a Lemond Zurich and that last about 6-7 years. Early last year I was in search of a CF frame under 2K. Thats when I found the 2005 Trek 5000 with the OCLV 120, this is an amazing ride right from the floor at the shop. The biggest diffence I notice was climbing on the 5000, it almost pushes you up the climbs. Over all an excellent and quality bike.

I have the 2006 TCT version which is made with heavier carbon than the 120 stuff. I think the TCT is 200 grams per square meter and made off shore. Generally I love this bike. Great value for a full carbon frame at well below $2K. Components are solid but not high end. I'm a big guy so I tend to break the lightest stuff anyway. I've logged over 1000 miles on this bike this summer. Very pleased with my buying decision.

this is the 2006 tct edition.. replaces my trek 1000, so i am still discovering how sweet this upgrade is. shimano 105 shifter, with 12/25 cassette , ultegra fd and rd. looking forward to next 50 miler, its going to make that and my century attempt alot nicer , i expect

Great bike. Extemely comfortable, quick, and light. 2005 model is also US-made, and has a nice color scheme. Very stable on steep downhills. Mechanically sound, and the conservative stock rear cassette helps on the local climbs. Eventually going to a compact chainring is the only change I can imagine making to what is otherwise an all-around great bike.

Have owned a steel Peugeot and an aluminum Trek. Before buying, test-rode a variety of bikes, including Lightspeed, Specialized, and Bulls.

CF is not myth. It is smoother on chip/seal roads. It is more comfy to ride for a long time than aluminum. I am a fan of the ultegra/105 mix. I have a bike with dura ace. These components work as good and without a good scale, you will not know the difference (exception of brakes)

Wacky frame sizing. I ride a 56cm in many frames - a 58cm in others. This 58 barely fits my legs, but I am an average sized 6' guy. Oh, and put the saddle on your mtn bike and get a real road saddle. Stock saddle cannot be ridden more than 10 miles before the screaming begins.

18 months - 2k miles on my 2005 Trek 5000. No mechanical failures at all. I am pleased with the frame, although I do have a bit of a fit issue. I have 58 cm bike. I changed the stem from stock (110) to a 90mm to shorten the length of reach. My seat post is at the max line. Bike did not fit me stock. I am 6'. I have a 34" inseam. Check that out carefully at the dealer before deciding your size. Worked for me, but not stock

Lemond, Giant, and other Treks

MADE IN USA. Full carbon frame w/ lifetime warranty. Reasonable components. Sure things could always be upgraded, but everything works well and I wouldn't go any faster as a result.

Wouldn't own the 2006 model, since it's not made in USA. I'm sure there are other foreign bikes with similar components for less $.

I was only looking for an American bike, so the list included only Trek and Cannondale. This is my first road bike, and I really enjoy it. It is smooth, light, turns heads, and was a great deal. I have over 700 miles on it, and look forward to riding every day, and maybe racing a little next year. Must make it last though. I may never be able to afford an American bike again, since they keep shifting more production overseas each year.

Very light, looks great, only 140 miles - so far so good.

Fell 2 out of my first 3 rides due to getting used to clip peddles (not really a bike problem though...)

Hadn't ridden in years, purchased this with the MS150 in mind. Have 140 miles on it so far, shortest ride 14 miles, longest 34. Very pleased with the bike. Decided to spend the extra money to by the 2005 version - although it is 9 speed, it has some higher end components which puts it somewhere between the 2006 5000 and 5200.

Test drove the 2006 Trek 5000, decided the 2005 was worth the extra money.

I am coming off an aluminum road bike with a carbon fork, and notice a major improvement in shock absorbtion, especially on chip and seal pavement. The shifting is excellent and the bike is also very quiet. I planned on having to replace the saddle, but it is working well, so I will keep it. I thought it was great to get into a carbon frame bike at this price, with these components.

This is a 2006 model. It differs from the 2005 by having its carbon frame built in Taiwan instead of in the U.S. It comes with 105 10-speed shifters and an Ultegra rear derailleur. The front derailleur is 105 on a double, and Ultegra on a triple. The brakes are off-brand, Cane Creek. In a 56 frame the bike weighs 20 lbs with Look pedals. One thing to notice about this bike is that it comes with 42 cm handlebars on the 56 frame, when many bikes of that size have a 44 handlebar. If you buy this bike you might want to change that out if you need wider bars.

Normally on an aluminum bike with carbon fork i was supprised at how much of a difference the 5000 was on bumppy terrain. Great all-around ride, ditto on the lack of full ultegra. smooth, though and responsive for an all carbon ride.

I have been happy with the performance of my bike so far. Some other brands of carbon bikes may feel a little more "snappy", but the Trek 5000 has a smooth ride that is great for long rides. I like the new colors and the price is not bad for a carbon frame. I wish it was full Ultegra instead of a mix of Ultegra and 105, but not that big a deal to me.
