I have been looking at different irons for about a month now and being a lefty am having a hard time finding everything to demo. I am also trying to be a little economical because I have a wedding coming up in about 15 months and just started taking the game seriously last year. I hit the RBZ and JPX-800s, loved the 800s. Just had a hard time pulling the trigger after seeing Cobra AMPs on ebay for 340 and then looking at Callaway X-20/X-20 Tours on CPO.

I can't find a store with the AMPs to hit and since the 20s aren't around I can't find them either. Both seem to be a great price...the X-20 Tours are 399 for outlet and 363 for Like New..I just don't know if I can handle them. I ended last summer with about a 16 handicap and don't want to become complacent with a super GI but also don't want to be unable to enjoy the game because I can't control the ball at all. Shot making intrigues me but I know I am not close to the level of trying it.

If I buy clubs I can't hit am I making a huge mistake? I have heard great things about CPO and they have a 10% discount code right now so that makes me (and the future wife happy) but I have never hit a callaway club. I also hate not being able to see the club as it lies, I can't stand the look of an extremely chunky club. The amps/x-20 tours are in the same price range any input on which I should look at? I know this is all vague and from my trolling I should hit them and get fitted but what do I do if it's not an option? Will I be able to handle the x-20 tours? (FYI the clubs I play now are Tommy Armour 845c? looks like a CB but not very chunky)

Sounds like you need to find a demo day in your area so you can hit everything that's out there. And no, it's not a great idea to buy clubs without trying them first.

I realize you might be a couple of months from a good demo day option in NJ, but good deals on X-20's are not going anywhere. At a minimum, you should make you way to a golf shop and look at the set up with right handed clubs to see how you feel about top lines and set up. That might help you narrow down the few you want to test. The X-20 is going to have a considerably thicker topline than your 845's, so it might take some getting used too.

I have been able to see the amps in a right handed set up but not the x-20/tours

Budgetgolf have that 30 day return for full credit warranty, you're responsible for shipping though. It sucks not being able to fully demo clubs before buying. I like to see ball flight when making buying decisions. I have bought clubs without trying though. As a matter of fact, my last 4 irons sets were purchased without trying. yikes, never realized that.

33 Handicap

I purchased my current driver & 3 wood without swinging first, I did fine but my investment was tiny. If I was ever able pony up ducats for NEW clubs, I would hit to swing them first.

dont do it....i bought the wrong shaft for my new i20 fairway wood and am trying to figure out what i should do to fix the situation...if i had just gotten fitted or hit the clubs first i would have avoided this situation

Buying blind can work out fine if you know what you need and what will work, but it takes time to get to know yourself as a golfer. Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of getting fitted is that it provides you with confidence that what you ordered is the right choice. Because of this, you will persist with the new clubs until you adapt should you struggle hitting them when you get them. Conversely, buying blind leads to second guessing unless you are prepared to stick with the new clubs and work tthrough the adjustment period.

I guess another question, tho probably stupid, is how awkward is it to ask to hit clubs at a store like Golf Smith and not purchase anything? I've only hit one club there and it was because my friend was hitting a driver that he was buying. Are they pushy or look at you like you are just trying to get free swings in?

Pretty sure I wouldn't buy a club I havnt, couldn't, or didn't hit first

I will probably get the 712 CB/MB combo in 5-PW. I have 690.CB and though they are different, I am playing the same shaft S300 - so I can pretty much guess what the clubs will do. May be dumb but as a lefty it is hard to find Titleist irons to demo outside.

That being said, I envy the guys that can take clubs to the hitting booths, demo days, into launch monitors ect. to find clubs that work. I just have never been able to, something about being in there my swing goes to heck. I can't, and never have been able to, don't even try anymore. I find sets that I like the asthetics, read golfwrx reviews, and fit the profile of my swing and try them, I went through 3 or 4 sets of buying and selling in a cpl months time last time I changed irons, but did finally find some.

[/quote] Yea I don't think I would fair well mentally at a demo day lol but I'm glad to hear it isn't uncomfortable to hit at golfsmith. I didn't want it to be like buying a car, just because you go for a test drive they look to run the numbers and hand you some keys. I haven't playing anything other than these hand-me-downs so I'm sure for me it is going to be hard to tell which I like because everything will feel amazing.

I go to Golfsmith on Metcalf in KS. Those guys are great. Grab used clubs go to the bay & swing away. The atmosphere there is laid back no pressure to buy. If you ask, they have no problem putting together a new iron or driver to demo. The Edwin Watts across the street does not have same friendly atmosphere...in my experience. If you can find a place like that in your area you'll never have to buy without trying again!

Once in my life i bought blind, without hitting. It didn't work. Bad idea.

Turns out I got the numbers wrong on my clubs lol which caused me to get everything wrong. They are 858c tour classics, not even tommy armour, feel kinda dumb but had no clue what I was given when I got them like 8 years ago. So they seem to be a GI club with a small cavity in the back.

As a young golfer who is "just starting to take the game serious"... having confidence in a club is a big part of the game. You need to spend your hard earned dollars on a product which instills confidence. How can you do that without previous knowledge? Get fit and try before you buy. And if you have a top notch local fitter he might offer Wishon's or KZG's that will rock your world. I'm an older golfer who got fit decades ago. My numbers have never changed. So I will buy before I try. And try before I buy. Either way I've put clubs in my bag that did not last. Lost confidence in the clubs. After all it can't be me.

I'm in the opposite spectrum...never tried anything before purchasing them. It's no big deal. Anyone that tells you that fitting will make a WORLD of difference is full of it. Maybe it will help fine tune your game for your exact lie angle and trajectory but if you're a 16 and just starting out then I highly doubt you're going to see a day and night difference with a fitting. Just use common sense for length and shaft flex. The people that rave about fitting are in 1 of 2 categories: 1) Either really good and are fine tuning everything (i.e. their preferred trajectory or lie angle) or 2) Got suckered into getting fit and are trying to justify their purchase. Being new, you're swing path, and speed will probably change dramatically over the next few years so why spend your money on something that may or may not even be right 6 months from now. Case in point, I'm in my 20's and relatively strong yet when I first hit a LM I swung 98 mph. After learning proper technique (and actually dropping muscle) I posted a 110 and 118 (juiced LM but you get the idea). Just for fun I bought an old flat blade regular flex and hit it just fine compared to my normal gamers (upright, stiff, and longer shaft SGIs). My path is also so much flatter these days...my next set I'm anticipating going 2-3* flat while my current ones were "fit" by the OEM company upright. I also play with a couple single digit handicappers. One plays everything off the rack and even played 9 holes with a tour striker for everything and finished 3-over, whereas the other just got a head to toe fitting. He changed his lie angle flatter, optimized his shafts, etc... the whole 9. Is he day and night better? No but he now hits his preferred shots. Keep in mind, he was already extremely good. You're a 16...can you go to a range and hit the same trajectory, distance, with solid contact shot after shot? Me neither. So how will you know if it was the fitting or you just made better contact and are simply improving? In my opinion, the bottom line is that fitting should be called fine tuning and newer players (not made of money) should learn the fundamentals and be able to groove their swing before locking themselves into one club profile.

As a fellow lefty I sympathize all to well. To be honest I very rarely try anything before buying, but that is for two reasons. The 1st is, there is NEVER ANYTHING lefty to demo. The 2nd is I am waaaaay to cheap and won't pay full on retail for anything. I'll wait and buy new on steep discounts at places like Rockbottom or global golf. Now I will try as others said to at least see something in person right handed, but thats usually it. FOr example I wanted a Callaway Razr Fit. They are still $299 new everywhere. I was at a golf show a few weeks ago and picked up a lefty demo for $110. Never hit it. But thats just me.

I'm lucky enough to have a local shop in L.A. that let's me take the 6 iron of any set out to the course to try. I wouldn't buy another set or driver or fairway wood without doing that first That's the only way I'll really know how I hit the club. At the very least I would hit the club in one if the stalls at a store, but even that has been inaccurate in the past

I'm a lefty too, and I bought my previous set blind without a demo. One of the previous posters is right. Getting fitted can instill confidence in your current swing. Length/Lie/Shaft/Shaft Flex all being tuned to your swing characteristics will make it easier for you to improve as a golfer. Blindly buying clubs without a demo can make you address the ball incorrectly (hands too close, too far, too high, too low), all in an effort to make the club look flush-leading to an errant backswing-to a bad downswing....etc. Don't think that because you aren't a scratch golfer, you shouldn't be fitted. I know hitting a LH demo is hard and sometimes out of your control, but getting fitted to your specs isn't. You can also request that the retailer order a LH demo club. I was going through this same process a few weeks ago and took a shot in the dark, asked the store manager to make a special order, and he did... Worst that can happen is they say no, right? To someone like golfsmith, or golf galaxy, it isn't a big deal to get an extra demo club in. That being said, add me to this list of "try before buy" votes. Good Luck! Disclaimer: My advice and reasons for getting fitted was purely anecdotal. I don't know if anyone else has had a similar experience when buying blind.

I would say don't buy but honestly everything your looking at is going to be easier to hit than your 845's. Your best bet would be go to a Golf Galaxy, Golfsmith, or Edwin Watts. They can fit you there, maybe it won't be the best fitting but lie angle and length should pretty easy to determine.

Agreed, one of the down sides of being a lefty is it can be hard to hit a club before you buy. I recently bought a Nike Covert Tour and could not hit it before due to no one local having a lefty model in stock. As a result, I bought online (which I was hesitant to do because if everyone bought online the local shops would close, and when the local shops close it's a lost resource). The online retailer has a "30-day playability" guarantee and if necessary, I will exchange it.

Here in the south-east of England we are quite lucky, as there is a nearby store that sells ONLY left handed golf equipment. The head pro does VERY well out of his niche. I used to buy from him all the time, but nowadays I only go there to look at the new stuff before buying from my local pro. With regard to blind buying, I don't think it's that much of a problem if you are familiar with the shaft that comes in the club. However, if you're not familiar, the chances are that it won't suit you, and you will end up writing an article on here saying how bad said club is, when it's actually the fault of the shaft, but even more your own fault!

He changed his lie angle flatter, optimized his shafts, etc... the whole 9. Is he day and night better? No but he now hits his preferred shots. Keep in mind, he was already extremely good. You're a 16...can you go to a range and hit the same trajectory, distance, with solid contact shot after shot? Me neither. So how will you know if it was the fitting or you just made better contact and are simply improving? In my opinion, the bottom line is that fitting should be called fine tuning and newer players (not made of money) should learn the fundamentals and be able to groove their swing before locking themselves into one club profile. [/quote] There is a lot more than just lie angle that can help your game when getting fit. Grip size, length of shaft, flex of shaft, different types of shaft, etc. all come into play with a fitting. And having the wrong lie angle, shaft, etc can cause a great swing to have poor results. I think aside from taking lessons, getting fit is first thing someone should do. Just because one person doesn't see/feel a night and day difference, doesn't mean that it doesn't help. Don't get me wrong there are going to be some people who get fit into the standard specs and the fitting might not do as much good for them, but the majority of the time people I know who have gone with getting fitted have benefited greatly. To the OP, if you haven't taken lessons yet, I would suggest doing that first and then having your instructor help you get fit for clubs. If you have taken lessons, ask your instructor his thoughts on which direction you should go.

Here's a look at 11 classic golf clubs or sets of clubs from the past and what they're worth today.

The PGA of America is one of the world's largest sports organizations, composed of PGA of America Golf Professionals who work daily to grow interest and participation in the game of golf.

The clubs Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry used to win the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans

C oming into the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer had a combined 212 starts and just one PGA Tour victory apiece. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry had 26, including five major championships. Given those numbers no one was surprised the latter pair emerged victorious on the first playoff hole to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with an alternate-shot birdie on the par 5.

Not that it was remotely easy for the pair. Playing catch up most of the day after Ramey and Trainer tied the tournament record for the alternate-shot format with a remarkable 63 that included 11 birdies and nine over the final 12 holes, some heroics were needed.

McIlroy provided the majority of them over the back nine, rolling in a huge birdie putt on No. 11 then cashing in another with his TaylorMade Spider X X3 mallet putter at the 16th after Lowry hit a clutch approach from a fairway bunker.

A bogey at 17 after a stray tee shot by Lowry left the duo needing a birdie at the last to tie and McIlroy delivered a bomb off the tee with his TaylorMade Qi10 driver. He then hit a nifty pitch shot after Lowry’s iron approach went wide left to set up the tying birdie.

Although the result wasn’t a surprise, that McIlroy and Lowry won with a par was. The Ramey/Trainer tandem showed the effects of the long layoff after finishing some 2 hours, 15 minutes before the leaders. A poor drive was followed by a hooked approach. Then came a flubbed pitch by Trainer. Ramey’s putt through the fringe came up some seven feet short and Trainer’s par effort never came close to the hole.

In other words, experience paid off.

Second round of Invited Celebrity Classic canceled due to inclement weather

The second round of the Invited Celebrity Classic has been canceled due to inclement weather around Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas.

"Due to the current weather conditions and forecast throughout the greater Dallas-Forth Worth area, competition at the Invited Celebrity Classic presented by Choctaw Casinos & Resorts will be canceled for Saturday, April 20," a statement released by PGA TOUR Champions announced. "Round 2 will be played on Sunday, April 21 and will utilize the same tee times. As a result of today's cancellation, this event will now be contested as a 36-hole competition. There will be no formal cut."

This marks the second time this season that a PGA TOUR Champions event will be official after 36 holes of competition. Stephen Ames was declared the winner of the The Chubb Classic presented by SERVPRO after 36 holes of competition earlier this season as weather caused Sunday's final round to be canceled.

Thomas Bjørn holds the 18-hole lead at 7-under with a pack of four golfers one stroke behind him at 6-under. Bjørn, who has never won on PGA TOUR Champions, finished runner-up at the Trophy Hassan II in February, his only other start this season.
