On Location: Rachael Leigh Cook Shares Her Vietnam Itinerary From ‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’

As the sun set in Hoi An one evening last spring,  Rachael Leigh Cook gazed out on the Vietnamese scene on the Thu Bon River. Her mom sat beside her beaming ear-to-ear as someone played Peter Gabriel in the distance. “I remember thinking, ‘I don’t want anything else in the world—I just want to be exactly here, where I am,'” the 43-year-old actress says. “That was a transcendent travel moment for me.” It’s exactly that kind of travel magic that’s celebrated in her latest film,  A Tourist’s Guide to Love , a Netflix original, premiering April 21, about travel executive Amanda Riley who is sent undercover to experience a small-group tour company that her American corporation is considering buying. Arriving in Vietnam with a check-list of sights to see, she soon discovers that the most meaningful moments are found veering off the itinerary. 

In A Tourist's Guide to Love , Rachael Leigh Cook's Amanda is a lovelorn travel executive who goes undercover to learn more about Vietnam's tourism industry.

Filmed all around the Asian nation—from its major hubs Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to the beach town of Da Nang and the northeastern province of Ha Giang —Cook was stunned by how unique every corner of the country is. “It seemed too good to be true,” she says. “Then I got there and realized it’s just that beautiful, and people will get to discover that if they watch our movie.” 

This movie is such a celebration of travel—how has traveling been a part of your life? I spent my whole childhood in Minnesota . My dad worked in the school system, so we could travel a little bit in the summer, but we never went especially far. My parents are extremely prudent financially and we would stay at youth hostels. I remember we went to the Seattle's Northwest Folklife Festival and saw the fish market . As someone who didn't travel much as a kid, the opportunities to travel that have come from my work have shown me some of the most eye-opening and unexpected moments of my life. And this movie is the pinnacle of that.

The movie starts in Ho Chi Minh City and ends in Hanoi—how do the cities compare? Ho Chi Minh City is bustling. It is hard-working, fast-paced, and kind of crazy. There are incredible rooftops there. There's glamour. Anything that you could want to find, you can find in Ho Chi Minh City. Hanoi is completely different. The energy there is very different. Everyone walks at a slower pace. There's just less sound in the air. The aesthetic is different—and it’s absolutely beautiful.

The first spark of romance comes during a scene in Hoi An—how would you describe it? When people see images of Vietnam that have those streets full of lanterns and borderline Disney magic about them, that's Hoi An. It's stunningly beautiful—I think that that might have been my favorite stop. It’s conveniently very near Da Nang, which is named the most livable city in Vietnam. It's just a gorgeous beach town. I'm not gonna pretend it wasn't hot. Of course it is. It's Vietnam. But a must-see for sure. 

The group then ventures off the plan and heads to My Son Sanctuary . What was it like to film there? You can feel the stillness and the history there. Its beauty is transcendent and very special. It feels pretty weird to have lighting equipment on an ancient temple—that juxtaposition is not lost on me. I felt just very grateful that they let us film there. I hope that people want to go check it out after seeing our movie.

The movie purposely skips the Golden Hand Bridge , but did you go there? I totally went to the Golden Hand Bridge. We even say in the movie that it’s awesome, but it's just not steeped in as much history. My mom came out for about 10 days with my kids—they couldn't miss more school, but they came during their spring break—and they absolutely loved it. They've created a theme park after a gondola ride. It takes like 22 minutes to get to the top of this mountain. And then up there is something that I would equate to the scale of maybe like a quarter the size of Disneyland and there are theme park rides up there. There is a giant—I don't want to call it a food hall because it's beautiful—but all these restaurants, it is really worth seeing. The engineering blows my mind. What a gift that we got to experience that together.

The film is set in both bustling Ho Chi Minh City and sleepy Hanoi, giving a glimpse at life in various Vietnamese cities.

Filming the homestay scene in Ha Giang must have been quite a contrast? Ha Giang is mountainous and very beautiful and it's near the border to China. It was probably our most rustic place. It's very much a hard-working community that's seen a lot over the years. It's one of those places I never would have been motivated to come to, but I'm so glad that I did. It’s very user-friendly and the people they're incredibly welcoming. They're excited that you're there. They want to know how you got there. I really just hope they liked the movie—I hope we do them justice.

What were your favorite food experiences in Vietnam?   The food that I ate way too much of that I have not been able to find as good since I've returned back here is bánh xèo. That's my favorite thing. It's like a very thin egg pancake with fresh vegetables quickly cooked in it, and it gets wrapped up like a pancake. So it's sort of like a burrito without the burrito. And oh my gosh, the sauces with it. It's delicious. I did try the durian. I was impressed by the taste. It's in the family of sweetness of a mango, almost. I found the consistency [was] what I couldn't really get behind. And obviously this smell—it is as advertised.

Cook notes the difference between a tourist—someone who wants to escape their life—and a traveler, who does so in order to experience theirs.

Amanda is a very over-prepared traveler. How would you categorize yourself? My packing style is not impressive. If I have a week to pack, it'll take a week. If I have three hours to pack, it'll take three hours. If I have 30 minutes, it'll take 30 minutes. The results are all the same. It's never better or worse. My travel style is generally unprepared and heavy on recommendations. I love knowing where people say to go, especially if it's friends or friends of friends, I find that the most fun and reliable way to sort of like wade through a city. I also like to stay where it makes things central, so I can walk as much as possible. I'm a little bit daunted by taking underground systems where I can get lost because I have no sense of direction.

What’s been your favorite interaction with a stranger while traveling? I made friends with this woman when I was working [on 2014’s  Red Sky ] in Russia. She spoke no English and I speak no Russian, but we could just tell that we liked each other and that we had a similar vibe and humor, and we still found ways to laugh together. I remember her very fondly—she's such a special soul.

Cook's own travel style is different from the overprepared Amanda—the actress relies largely on recommendations. 

What’s a place you’d always go back to? A place I've been twice and I hope I go many times is Moorea , near Bora Bora [and] Tahiti . I think it was Marlon Brando who lived out in Bora Bora because he knew that his heart rate would drop by like 20 percent the second he touched down there, and I could feel it in myself too. It's just so relaxing and centering.

What do you think it is about travel that makes us let go? In the movie, we say a tourist is someone who wants to escape their lives, and a traveler is someone who wants to experience theirs. But I think that those sentiments go hand-in-hand. Sometimes you gotta jump out of the boat that you're in to be able to experience a new thing, and that's okay. Getting out of your comfort zone is what creates and inspires lasting memories. You don't know how long life is going to be, and you should spend your life on experience.

A Tourist's Guide to Love Takes Viewers to Incredible Filming Locations in Vietnam

The Netflix rom-com is giving us major wanderlust.

Ho Chi Minh City

Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam. It’s where Amanda starts her trip. Along with the tour group, she browses Ben Thanh Market , one of the city's many lively markets where visitors can grab anything from fresh produce to garments and handcrafted items.

In Hoi An, an ancient town on Vietnam’s central coast, the tour group goes sightseeing, visiting spots like Quon Cong Temple . Hoi An turned out to be Do’s favorite place to film. “The town’s character is so unique,” the production designer says. “My team and I designed and created a total of four main locations within Hoi An.”

Do’s team set out to elevate the existing value of each location. The tailor shop was one such spot, created at a Yaly Couture shop. “Knowing their newest collection was not on current display, I took the privilege of turning their vintage courtyard into a brand-new showcase area with the most unique pieces of Yaly’s latest designs,” Do says. “And with the appropriate addition of the peacocks and some jays, this center area was transformed into an authentic colorful royal garden for our scene.”

The dreamy lantern-lit street that Amanda and Sinh wander down is another creation. While Hoi An is known for lanterns and small lantern-covered streets, none as elaborate as the one in the film existed. So, Do's ordered more than a thousand lanterns in various shapes and sizes. At more than half a mile long, it was constructed over four hot summer days—and it still stands. “We were very honored when Hoi An People’s Committee and Department of Culture asked production to leave this set intact for future tourists to enjoy,” Do says.

When Amanda and Sinh partake in the water lantern festival, they’re on the bank of the Thu Bon River . That experience “is a treat to even a Vietnamese person because the actual festival only happens once a year, and it is rare for a tourist to conveniently be in Hoi An during such time,” Do explains.

Filming also took place at the Hoi An Hotel , which functioned like a studio since it was closed at the time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We were going to name it Da Nguyet (Moon Watching) Hotel, but since the flower vines, after months of pandemic, had beautifully covered the sign of the hotel, we decided to let nature be the voice.”

The coastal city of Da Nang was tapped as a filming location for its sandy beaches. About an hour away from Da Nang and Hoi An, filming also took place at My Son Sanctuary . The Unesco World Heritage site encompasses the remains of tower temples and “was the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom for most of its existence,” according to Unesco . Surrounded by mountains, the area is set in a stunning geological basin.

Sinh’s family home is located in Hà Giang, on the banks of the Lô River in northeastern Vietnam. “Hà Giang, and Hà Giang city in particular, was an incredible opportunity to show Vietnam’s cultural ethnic heritage and roots,” Do says of the area. It took the cast and crew six hours to get there from Hanoi. “Its rustic, countryside beauty with fields and terraces of rice really lent the off-the-beaten-track value to the film.”

The pure beauty and cultural value aren’t the only aspects that made filming in the location extra special. “It could very well be the last time that that old village is filmed, as Hà Giang is developing at such a rapid speed, meaning a traveler would need to drive eight, even 10 hours to see the likes of that kind of village again,” Do says.

Vietnam’s capital of Hanoi served as the backdrop for the film’s final scenes. Both the interior and exterior for the water puppet show were shot at Thang Long National Water Puppet Theatre , which is located in the heart of the city and near one of Vietnam’s most famous lakes called Ho Hoan Kiem. “The traditional art of performing water puppet shows dates back as far as the 11th century from the people whose life were nurtured by the water of the Red River,” Do says. “For us, it was a mission to bring this art form into our film.”

The heartwarming moment between Amanda and Sinh at the end was filmed at the iconic roundabout in front of the Hanoi Opera House , which was built by the French from 1901 through 1911 and was inspired by classical Greek architecture and Paris’s Palais Garnier.

In Hanoi, filming also took place at the Tirant Hotel . Located on Gia Ngu Street in the Old Quarter, the hotel has operated since 2011. Surrounded by beloved restaurants and entertainment venues, it’s ideal for both business and leisure travelers.

Tsuchida sat down with Netflix Tudum to talk about their experience of shooting the film on location in Vietnam. He said, “To be able to film in so many locations in Vietnam was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The excitement of (Ho Chi Minh City) was captivating, while the traditions of Hanoi were enriching. The diversity and culture of Da Nang, Hội An, and Mỹ Sơn were breathtaking. And living and filming in Hà Giang was spiritually moving.”

He stated, “Physically, it was like 90-degree weather all the time and 100% humidity, so it’s really hot and sweaty. With that said, working in Vietnam was an incredible experience. Because the Vietnamese people, the crew, government, the location, whatever, they were super enthused to have us there.” Moreover, many popular city streets were reportedly shut down during the production process, making the entire experience all the more smoother for the actors.

Queen of rom-coms, Rachael Leigh Cook, has a new film streaming on Netflix titled  A Tourist’s Guide to Love , and yes, it’s another romantic comedy. In A Tourist’s Guide to Love , Cook’s character finds herself falling wildly in love with a charismatic tour guide while on assignment in Vietnam.

After her boyfriend of five years unexpectedly breaks up with her, American travel executive Amanda Riley (Rachael Leigh Cook) needs a getaway to clear her head. Her boss and close friend, Mona, suggests that she take on an undercover job assignment in Vietnam to help the company and to get herself out of a downward spiral. Amanda accepts the job and then heads to Vietnam, not knowing that adventure and romance lie ahead when she lands.

Not only is the romantic comedy set in Vietnam, but it was also shot in the beautiful country filled with rich history. In fact,  A Tourist’s Guide to Love  reportedly makes history as the first U.S. movie to be entirely filmed on location in Vietnam. The movie’s director  Steven Tsuchida said this about shooting in the populous Asian country, “To be able to film in so many locations in Vietnam was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

So, where exactly in Vietnam was  A Tourist’s Guide to Love  filmed? Can you visit the filming locations in real life? Here’s what we know.

A Tourist’s Guide to Love filming locations

Principal photography reportedly began sometime in April 2022 and then wrapped up in June that year. The Netflix film was shot in various cities in Vietnam, such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hội An, Da Nang, and Hanoi. Within these cities, scenes were filmed in many different places. Scenes were also shot at a village in the Hà Giang countryside and at My Son Sanctuary.

Here are the locations in each city where scenes were filmed:

• Ho Chi Minh City (Bến Thành Market)
• Hội An (Chùa Cầu – A footbridge that crosses the Thu Bồn River.)
• Hanoi (Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre and Hanoi Opera House)

A scene was also filmed at a beach in Da Nang. The exact beach is unknown, but it might be My Khe Beach based on what it looks like in the movie.

Especially, the film showcases the beauty of local landscapes along with that of Vietnamese people and culture through six main filming locations: Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hoi An, My Son and Ha Giang

After the premiere on Netflix, A Tourist’s Guide to Love soon to claim its position as the most-watched movies globally on Netflix.

A typical rom-com that anyone might be looking for on a lazy Saturday, however, A Tourist’s Guide to Love certainly celebrates the country, showcasing multiple cities and landscapes as Amanda (played by She’s All That’s Rachael Leigh Cook) and her new friends discover the wonders of Vietnam. They find adventure and romance in markets, streets, temples, and ancient villages that actually were the set for some of the film’s most beautiful scenes.

As someone who had never been to Vietnam before this production, my fervent hope is that it’s worth the watch just to get a sense of this incredible country… We filmed in Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Da Nang, Ha Giang and Hanoi, all of which are wildly different places in look, history and energy…

Ho Chi Minh City

A bustling metropolis, a hub of commerce and culture. Since the city is well known for its lively streets, impressive skyscrapers and vibrant nightlife, travellers can find many interesting things and places to experience. The city offers an eclectic mix of colonial architecture, historic landmarks, and cultural attractions. It’s also home to the city’s famous Ben Thanh Market. Other places to be considered are: The Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon - a stunning example of French colonial architecture and features many stained glass windows and intricate carvings; The Saigon Central Post Office - a must-visit for architecture lovers, with many rooms to explore and ornate details to marvel at; Cu Chi Tunnels - an impressive network of underground tunnels during the resistance war of Vietnamese people. Not far from the centre city, the Mekong Delta provides a wonderful cruising tour for sprawling views of paddy fields and houseboats creating signature floating markets.

Hoi An Ancient Town

Hoi An, the gorgeous coastal town of Vietnam famous for its handcrafted lanterns, yellow hue households which are rich in cultural experiences to dive into. The Ancient Town, which is a UNESCO-listed heritage site, is simply a spectacle. For a taste of local life, you can pay a visit to Tra Que Vegetable Village where farmers grow the lushest greens, or Sampan’s Distillerie d’Indochine to sample the one and only Vietnam-made rum. Whether to satisfy culture hunters or lazy souls preferring relaxing on a pristine beach, Hoi An is a wonderful destination that surely offers something for everyone. You should experience unmissable activities such as riding the iconic basket boats, experiencing farm life at Tra Que Vegetable Village, checking out the Lune Centre, getting an education at the Hoi An Silk Village.

A coastal city in Central Vietnam known for its sandy beaches. With a huge arc of gently curving sand at the coastline, Da Nang boasts beach areas to suit a range of sunseekers. And what else? My Son Sanctuary, located not far from the City of Bridges. The sanctuary is an architectural complex of many Champa temples with extremely unique architecture, influenced by Hinduism. All temples in the My Son sanctuary are made of brick and stone, facing the East - the direction of the rising sun. On the walls of the temples and towers are sophisticated, elaborate and meticulous carvings with many sophisticated details.

Linh Ung Pagoda

Serving as Sinh (Scott Ly) hometown, where Amanda and friends celebrate Tet as guests. The north-eastern mountainous province of Ha Giang, home to 22 ethnic groups, also well-known as the place where “flowers grow in rocks”. Ha Giang in the spring will be coated in the scent of flowers, especially cherry blossoms, plum flowers, mustard flowers and pear flowers in March. Spring is also the season of festivals. In Ha Giang in October-December, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the subtle fragrance, witness with their own eyes a purple colour of the buckwheat flowers covering all the small villages.

Besides primitive and majestic landscapes, Ha Giang also owns historical relic sites such as the Heaven’s Gate and Quan Ba twin mountains (Quan Ba District); the Vuong Family Palace and Lung Cu Flagpole (Dong Van District); Ma Pi Leng Pass (Meo Vac District); Tien (Fairy) Waterfall – Gio (Wind) Pass and the Ancient Rock field of Nam Dan (Xin Man District); and Quang Ngan mineral stream in Vi Xuyen District, etc.

The Temple of Literature (Ha Noi)

The adventure finally comes to an end in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, embracing and nurturing the well blended of tradition, ancient and contemplative elements. Ha Noi is a home of many historical relics such as the Temple of Literature - Vietnam’s first university and educated hundreds of well-known scholars and mandarins. Ha Noi is also a place to have fun and explore with many art shows such as water puppet dances, The Quintessence of Tonkin,... a shopping hub and a true place to wander and taste street food.

If you’ve never been to Vietnam, you’ll a chance to experience the country via your television screen with A Tourist’s Guide to Love, the new Netflix romantic comedy that began streaming today .

Directed by Steven K. Tsuchida, with a screenplay written by Eirene Tran Donohue, A Tourist’s Guide to Love stars Rachel Leigh Cook as a travel industry professional named Amanda, who finds herself unceremoniously dumped by her longtime boyfriend (played by Ben Feldman). To help take her mind off the break-up, Amanda’s boss (Missi Pyle) sends her on an assignment in Vietnam, to scope out a family-owned tour company for a potential buy-out. But when sparks fly between between Amanda and her Vietnamese tour guide, Sinh (Scott Ly), that complicated the business (and the pleasure) side of things.

The story might be familiar, but the setting will likely be new to many American audiences. Just as Amanda gets a tour of Vietnam, A Tourist’s Guide to Love offer viewers a first-hand look at some of the country’s most beautiful spots. “There are almost no American movies set in Vietnam that aren’t about the trauma of war,” noted screenwriter Eirene Tran Donohue in an interview with Tudum . “I wanted to change the conversation about Vietnam, to highlight it as a modern thriving country whose stories are worthy of being told.”

Where was A Tourist’s Guide to Love filmed?

A Tourist’s Guide to Love was filmed on location in Vietnam in April 2022. The production shot in many Vietnamese locations including Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hội An, Hanoi, and Hà Giang.

In a recent interview with Decider , star and producer Rachael Leigh Cook said, “The hardest part about doing press for this movie is—dead honest with you—is trying to describe Vietnam. Because there are truly no words. It’s just more of a feeling than anything. And it’s good that we have images, and instead of me trying to explain it to people!”

Every spot that Amanda visits in the movie was filmed on location, Cook said. But Cook’s personal favorite location? Hội An, a city famous for it’s markets, temples, and well-preserved ancient town. “I was really blown away by Hội An,” Cook said. “Just the magic in the air there. And it’s so near Da Nang, the beach town, so this sort of two-for-one that you get there is incredible.” That said, Cook stressed she would be happy to return to any part of Vietnam—as long as she got to drink the coffee. “I just want all of the coffee straight into my bloodstream. American coffee is not as good. There, I said it! Their coffee is better.”

The film is loosely based on the story of how screenwriter Eirene Tran Donohue, whose family is Vietnamese, met her current partner while taking an extended vacation in the country following a break-up. “On my last week in Vietnam, I met a Canadian backpacker who was very much a free spirit and very adventurous,” she said in an interview with Tudum. “It made me realize that I didn’t actually want a safe predictable life. He was supposed to be my holiday fling, [but] we have been together ever since — 22 years.”

Where was A Tourist’s Guide to Love Filmed? We discuss the Netflix film and its many filming locations. 

A Tourist Guide to Love is a Netflix romantic dramedy starring Rachel Leigh Cook , an executive producer on the film. Cook plays Amanda, a travel executive sent to vet a family-owned Vietnamese travel company called Saigon Silver Star.

When her boyfriend John puts their relationship on hold, she takes the assignment herself and travels to Vietnam undercover to evaluate the business from a customer perspective. Despite her strict work ethic, she finds herself drawn to the region’s beauty and the unconventional mindset of Sinh, the owner’s nephew (Scott Ly), who helps her when her luggage is lost.

This marks the first Netflix film shot in Vietnam. Screenwriter Eirene Tran Donohue’s script is based on her real-life experiences after a breakup on a five-week trip in Vietnam. She told Tudum, the official companion website to Netflix:

“On my last week in Vietnam, I met a Canadian backpacker who was very much a free spirit and very adventurous. It made me realize that I didn’t actually want a safe, predictable life. He was supposed to be my holiday fling, but we have been together ever since — 22 years.” — Tudum

Donohue also commented on the importance of filming in Vietnam:

Where was A Tourist’s Guide to Love filmed – a breakdown of filming locations

Hoi an, quang nam, vietnam.

Hoi An, Quang Nam, Vietnam, is an ancient riverside town in Vietnam. This is the setting where Cook’s Angela and Ly’s Sinh light a lantern. They then make a wish and release them into the river. (This can be found at the 37:10 mark).

Hoi An is located in the central area of Vietnam’s Quang Nam Province, at the mouth of the Thu Bon River. Home of the Hoi An Lantern Festival (also known as the entire moon festival) is held on the 14th day of the lunar month.

Da Nang, Vietnam

Da Nang is a famous beach area in Vietnam. This was the setting for the scene where Ly comes out of the water, and Cook’s character swims together. (The location can be found at the 39:10 mark of the movie).

The Vietnamese city is the fifth largest in the country, with just over one million people. The city is home to multiple World Heritage Sites. This includes the Imperial City of Hue and the Old Town of Hoi An, which fuels tourist activity in the region.

My Son Sanctuary, Quang Nam, Vietnam

The My Son Sanctuary is a cluster of abandoned Hindu Temples. The area was built between the fourth and fourteenth centuries under the Indianized kingdom of the Cham people. (At the 43:10 mark, Sinh takes the group to My Son instead of a Golden Bridge tour).

The World Heritage Center describes the sites as “A vivid picture of spiritual and political life in an important phase of the history of Southeast Asia. The monuments are unique and without equality in Southeast Asia.”

Ha Giang, Vietnam

The off-the-beaten-path of Ha Giang is a border town in Vietnam. Next to China, this is an official Frontier Area of the country. (You can experience the area with Sinh and Amanda when they visit his family at the 45:45 mark). The site has some of Vietnam’s most beautiful frontier landscapes and unique cultures.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam, with a population of almost ten million. Amanda can be seen at the 10-minute mark in the Tan Son Nhat International Airport and the Ben Thanh Market at the 21:10 mark.

According to IMDB, some of the movies shot in Ho Chi Minh City are The Lover (1992), Da 5 Bloods (2020), The Roundup (2022), Artemis Fowl (2020), and both versions of The Quiet American.

I went to Vietnam in spring 2022 to film A Tourist’s Guide to Love while the country was still closed to Westerners [because of the pandemic], so it was really special. It felt like we were kind of sneaking in. I love Rachael Leigh Cook, and this is a passion project for her. She was producing and starring in it, and she reached out asking if I’d be willing to come to Vietnam for a little bit. I didn’t ask any other questions.

This movie was perfect because it was the kind of part where they could squeeze all my stuff into a couple weeks, entirely in Hanoi, an unbelievably beautiful city. I mean, there’s a lot to unpack because a big part of that beauty — the incredible architecture and food in this rich, vibrant culture — is due to French colonialism. It’s this juxtaposition, a cognitive dissonance where you’re saying, “This is beautiful, but should I be finding this beautiful?” It’s not like Paris, where you’re like, “Wow, pretty.” You’re conflicted if you’re doing the homework.

We were staying in this old, beautiful hotel, the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel , not far from the Old Quarter. When you walk outside, all the fancy shops are right there. There’s prom kids taking pictures in front of Dior, and then you walk a few blocks and it’s people selling chicken feet in the middle of the street and you’re getting run over by mopeds. Every corner you turn is a completely different feeling.

My favorite coffee shop was Cong Caphe , an incredible place for coconut coffee, which is essentially, like, a 7 million-calorie dessert. I discovered that pho is actually breakfast! I didn’t realize that, and I think most Americans don’t know this. Especially in a city that’s so unbelievably hot, it feels crazy to get up and have soup first thing, but then I started imagining how ridiculous Westerners must look, sitting around like 9-year-olds eating sugar and syrup and pastries for breakfast.

I refuse to be the person who goes into a foreign culture and is ordering the hotel’s club sandwich. I ate lots of bánh mì, pho and loved this aromatic catfish dish called cha cá lã vong. Once in a while, you’ve got to have fancy French food too. We also tried to eat all of Vietnam on our last night in Hanoi at Quan An Ngon , where you could get literally every Vietnamese dish you’ve ever heard of.

For the movie itself, everything we shot was in a different hotel or coffee shop or restaurant. We had a scene in the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi. It’s this gazillion-year-old tradition and a really incredible thing to see — a show with puppets manipulated underwater. On my last day, we shot in the stunning gardens of the Temple of Literature. You just can’t believe it’s real.

The Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai, Hoi An , was very excited to have us, to the point where, waiting in our room, there was a cake with an edible photograph they googled of me. I had booked it through AmEx, and there are a bazillion Ben Feldmans, and yet somehow they knew. In Vietnam, the hospitality is pretty next level.

Hoi An [a coastal city south of Hanoi] is just the most charming city on planet Earth. It has this Venetian-style canal going through it, and at night, when the sun goes down, they light all these beautiful lanterns and make wishes on them and set them off into the water. It’s also where you can get a bespoke dress or suit made for you in like a day, which we did. I would go back to Hoi An in a second.

From there, we went farther south to a dream hotel, Amanoi , beside Nui Chua National Park, which is in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Everything was perfect and stunning. There were pools and an incredible beach, and we’ll remember that hotel for the rest of our lives.

Before I went to Vietnam, I rewatched that Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown episode in Hanoi, the one where Barack Obama joins him. Anthony Bourdain has this beautiful monologue about how Vietnam “grabs you and doesn’t let you go.” And he was right. I’ll love it forever. It takes a lot of planning and more than 20 hours of travel to get to Vietnam — I’d much rather get home and go, “Well, that was nice. I can check that off my list.” But I can’t. Vietnam is still on my list, and it’s going to remain there until I’m dead.

Writer of new Netflix rom-com set in Vietnam: ‘I wanted to change the conversation about Vietnam’

On my last week in Vietnam, I met a Canadian backpacker who was very much a free spirit and very adventurous. It made me realize that I didn’t actually want a safe predictable life. He was supposed to be my holiday fling, [but] we have been together ever since — 22 years.

There are almost no American movies set in Vietnam that aren’t about the trauma of war. It was really important to me to tell a story about life now. One that was full of joy and love and celebration. I wanted to change the conversation about Vietnam, to highlight it as a modern thriving country whose stories are worthy of being told.
