abu dhabi tour guide license

In-depth training programme offers UAE Nationals practical and theoretical training and provides tools to allow Guides to operate to international standards.

Abu Dhabi: The Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi has announced the official launch of the Emirati Tourist Guide Training & Licensing programme, an immersive and in-depth training course that invites UAE Nationals to become licensed tour guides and offers them the practical and theoretical tools to operate to an international standard. In line with the Department’s mission to support the development of the Emirate into a destination of distinction, the programme calls on the Emirati community to use their passion for, and knowledge of, the history and heritage of the UAE to provide visitors with unique and authentic experiences.

The Industry & Tourist Guide Training Unit at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has introduced the programme to all residents of Abu Dhabi wishing to obtain a tour guide license. With the new curriculum and advanced courses, the Department of Culture and Tourism initiated further plans in order to attract the Emirati community to participate in the tourism sector, a vital and ever-burgeoning industry in Abu Dhabi.  The programme aims to improve the quality of local tourist guide knowledge and enhance their engagement skills, ultimately improving the tourist experience.

Following several weeks of in-depth training, the first group of licensed tourist guides graduated at a ceremony held today at The St. Regis Corniche.

HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman, the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi , said, “Hospitality lies at the heart of Emirati society; it is the backbone of our culture and is a value that is instilled in us from a young age. Each year, millions of tourists come to Abu Dhabi to learn about our history, traditions and heritage; there is no better way for visitors to experience this, as well as the uniqueness of Abu Dhabi, than by spending time with an Emirati and seeing the city through their eyes. These firsthand experiences delivered by tour guides trained to an international standard, will result in positive impressions and an overall enhanced tourism and travel experience of Abu Dhabi.

The programme has been carefully designed to offer an extensive curriculum to shortlisted applicants, covering all aspects of attractions in Abu Dhabi, the culture and heritage of the UAE, first-aid, guiding principles and skills, group management and emergencies. Along with recurring periods of self-study and practical training, the trainees will also undertake a written assessment and give a mock presentation and city tour in order to obtain their license.

HE Saif Saeed Ghobash, Director General of the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi , said: “By taking part in the Emirati Tourist Guide Training and Licensing programme, our tour guides have become part of a global community of tour guides and tourism professionals. The 18 guides who have graduated here today are now charged with an important task. They will act as ambassadors for Abu Dhabi and will showcase our rich history and heritage to an international audience.”

The theoretical aspects of the programme include units of training on:

·         History and Culture of Abu Dhabi – covering Emirati heritage; the legacy and history of the Late Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan; Islam and the Holy Month of Ramadan and Eid; the national dress; what typical family life in the UAE is like; traditional food; traditional sports and work.

·         Abu Dhabi Sites and Attractions – covering the geography of Abu Dhabi and how to navigate maps; an in-depth study of the districts and islands, cultural sites and main attractions in Abu Dhabi, also including sports, leisure and retail sites; iconic hotels; attractions in the Al Ain Region, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site; attractions in Al Gharbia; festival, events, and activities available to tourists in the capital.

·         Principles of Guiding – covering the roles and responsibilities of a tourist guide; the principles of guiding and the recommended procedures, techniques, and skills; the importance of customer service and feedback; and the role of tour operators and how to work with them.

·         Communication, Presentation and Customer Service – wherein trainees can develop and improve their communication and presentation skills giving them increased confidence to speak clearly to a group of visitors.

·         Group Management – this unit will allow trainees to understand the importance of managing a group safely, identifying potential health and safety risks and how to handle and emergencies.

Trainees will also have the opportunity to undertake practical training, including:

·         A Big Bus Tour –  allowing them to experience an organised visitor bus tour of all main sites and attractions within Abu Dhabi City while planning a route of their own.

·         Coach Guiding Excellence - this unit will allow trainees to experience a tour guide with an experienced Abu Dhabi Tourist Guide, where they can see first-hand the quality of tours that the programme endeavours to teach them.

·         Coach Guiding and Walking Tour Practical – wherein trainees can implement the skills learned and plan and lead a coach and walking tour.

The successful completion of the training programme grants the graduates an Abu Dhabi tourist guide license valid for two years. Graduates will also be able to freelance with destination management companies and will be eligible to charge for guiding services.

Published: Wed 9 Feb 2022, 2:39 PM

The first federal license for practising the profession of a guide in various tourist and archaeological sites across the UAE has been introduced, a UAE minister has announced.

Dr Ahmed Belhoul Al Falasi, the Minister of State for Entrepreneurship, Small and Medium Enterprises told the Federal National Council (FNC) that the federal license is intended for national cadres wishing to work as professional tourist guides in the tourism sector.

“Recently, we have noticed an increasing demand for Emirati tour guides from various tourists and visitors to tourist and archaeological sites in the country as they are interested and enjoy their rich information about the UAE culture and history, their experiences, and the way they explain and describe all archaeological sites,” said Al Falasi adding that this prompted the ministry to take the decision of introducing a federal license for tourist guides with the main aim of attracting a big number of Emiratis to work in this important profession.

A report from the FNC committee on Financial, Economic and Industrial Affairs which was presented to the FNC meeting cited a decline in Emiratisation rates in the private tourism sector in the UAE.

The report said the Emiratisation rate in the private tourism sector reached 0.07 per cent in 2020, which is very low compared to other sectors and does not meet the requirements of development projects and foreign investments in the country. In addition, there is absence of a unified database for the tourism sector statistics, said the report.

The report also cited a number of challenges facing the tourism sector in the country, including the absence of federal legislation and laws regulating the tourism sector, the need to create an appropriate investment environment to attract more foreign capital to the sector, and the heavy reliance of each emirate on its local legislations.

FNC member, Saeed Rashid Al Abedy and chairman of the FNC’s Financial, Economic and Industrial Affairs committee said the committee’s final report on the Ministry of Economy’s policy regarding supporting the tourism sector, included a number of observations, proposals and recommendations that would support this vital sector at the federal level.

He said the reported proposed the need to create a federal media strategy to promote tourism at the state level, and developing plans and work programs to localise work in the tourism sector.

“The report also suggested the need to make optimal use of the experiences gained from organising the Expo 2020 in Dubai, and to benefit from this global event to promote business tourism and a sustainable economy in the country,” said Al Abedy.

“It is also necessary to learn about the Ministry of Economy’s policy in supporting this important tourism sector, especially after the repercussions of Coronavirus in the world, which greatly affected this vital sector.”

Dubai: Love exploring Dubai and introducing friends and family to different parts of the Emirate? How about turning your interest into a serious profession?

Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) issues tour guide licences to interested individuals, which allows them to work either part-time or full-time as tour guides in the Emirate.

Working part-time

If you wish to work part-time as a tour guide, it is important to know that the UAE’s Labour Law – Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 – allows employees to work part-time in the UAE, if the working hours are less than 20 hours per week. To know more about how you can work part-time in the UAE, read our detailed guide here .

But you may also be interested in turning your passion for culture and tourism into a full-time profession.

Either way, you will need to complete an online tour guide training programme that is offered by DET.

Here are all the details.

Eligibility criteria

According to DET, these are the criteria you need to fulfil to join the online tour guide training programme:

• Be at least 18 years old or above. • Have at least graduated from high school. • Have English communication skills • Obtain a first aid certificate in the UAE • Have a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your sponsor

You will have the option to apply for the programme in English or Mandarin.

You will then be guided through the four-stages of the programme. According to DET, all stages must be completed within a maximum of 90 days from the day of registration. While the total cost of the programme is Dh7,520, your payment will be divided into three installments, based on the stages that you complete. Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari debut will be in Australia after 2025 calendar confirmed

  • Melbourne to host curtain-raiser for first time since 2019
  • No new additions in 2025 as 24-race calendar remains

Lewis Hamilton will make his Ferrari debut in Australia after Formula One announced next season’s record-equalling 24-round calendar.

Hamilton, 39, is set to realise a childhood dream when he swaps Mercedes for Ferrari in 2025, with the seven-time world champion’s opening race to take place in Melbourne on 16 March.

It will mark the first time since 2019 that the F1 season has kicked off at Albert Park after the following year’s scheduled opener was cancelled at the last minute amid the outbreak of coronavirus.

The 2025 campaign is due to end in Abu Dhabi on 7 December, with the British Grand Prix – starting the first of its new 10-year contract extension at Silverstone – on 6 July.

The triple world champion Max Verstappen has been vocal in his criticism of the ever-expanding length of the F1 schedule. But for next season, at least, there will be no new additions to the calendar.

The campaign has started in Bahrain for the past four seasons, but with Ramadan staged throughout March in 2025, the rounds in the Gulf kingdom, and in Saudi Arabia, will be pushed back to April.

F1’s chief executive, Stefano Domenicali, said: “2025 will be a special year as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Formula One world championship, and it’s that legacy and experience that allows us to deliver such a strong calendar.

“Once again, we’ll visit 24 incredible venues around the world, delivering top-class racing, hospitality and entertainment, which will be enjoyed by millions of fans worldwide.

“I would also like to pay tribute to our F1 teams and drivers, the heroes of our sport, and our fans around the world for continuing to follow Formula One with such incredible enthusiasm.”

After four rounds of the current season, Verstappen holds a 13-point championship lead in his bid to secure four consecutive world titles. The next race takes place in Shanghai a week on Sunday.
