You may think of Spain as being slow and sedate, a county all about the afternoon siestas and late night fiestas, but you can have some incredible adventure holidays here.

One of the things I love about Spain is the weather. With a lot of places in the south of the country getting around 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s one of the best places to be outside no matter the time of year. Instead of sunning yourself by the pool though, I really recommend one of these Spain adventures.

Almost one that needs no introduction is the Camino de Santiago . This is 800 kms of hiking through the most beautiful terrain of northwestern Spain.

However, a few other Spain adventures involve learning to surf at Santander, climbing to the top of a volcano in Lanzarote and partying at La Rioja Festival (yes, Spain has a festival dedicated to drinking wine – how amazing is that!?)

Adventure Holidays in Spain

Head for the hills cycling the pyrenees.

The Pyrenees mountain range covers 430 km and it stretches over both Spain and France.

The French Pyrenees may be famous for the Tour de France and more well known, but the Spanish Pyrenees are just as beautiful with hardly any riders on the road.

Places like Girona have become a bit of a must for cyclists with an avid community being based there. Also, there’s the great cycling conditions all-year round.

Girona is a great place to start your trip but there are some amazing accents around the area that include the 10km Sant Hilari, the 10km Rocacorba and the 11km Els Angels.

One of the best things about cycling in the Pyrenees is you can nip into France and enjoy some of the iconic Tour de France climbs. This one is a real must for any cycling enthusiast.

Many walk the Camino as a form of spiritual journey, a way to find yourself again on the road. Or, for people like me, it’s just the beauty of hiking in somewhere as stunning as Spain with some amazing like-minded people along the way.

A lot of companies offer guided walking holidays, but somewhere like the Camino de Santiago you can do it on your own too. It all comes down to how much time you have. If you’re short on time then it’s a good idea booking a walking holiday package.

Either way, there is a reason the Camino de Santiago is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It really is one of the most incredible hikes you’ll ever do.

Learn to surf at Santander

No matter where I am around the world I always love surfing.

If you’ve never tried it before, Santander in northern Spain is a great place to learn to surf. You’ve got rugged coastlines and rolling mountains making this one of the best adventures in Spain.

While the Basque Country may be better known for its surfing, Cantabria and the area around Santander offer some great options too. Spots such as Liencres, El Sardinero, and Berria are all amazing and there are a few surf schools too to teach you the ways of the water.

However, there is some big BIG wave surfing at Cantabria so I recommend you steer clear of those until you’re ready! Big wave surfing is a huge Spanish adventure sport. This makes it the perfect place to watch big waves surfers!

The surfing season really picks up in June and then carries all the way through till very late in the summer. And the waters are warmer than you think too.

For me, this is one of the best places to visit in Spain . You really can’t go wrong with a holiday here, especially when it involves surfing!

Party at San Vino Wine Festival

The title of this festival says it all, really!

If you’re a wine lover (much like I am), don’t miss the chance to visit the Rioja region in northern Spain the summertime. I mean, it’s totally acceptable getting squiffy all in the name of culture.

With a number of different wine tasting events and tapas bars to enjoy, it’s very easy to lose track of time here, but the main event is the “Batalla de Vino”, also known as the wine fight.

The battle begins with a massive street party before everyone gathers the next day to duke it out armed with buckets of wine. Bring your water pistol, dress up in some old clothes and be prepared to get drenched in wine because this is a fiesta like no other.

Climb to the top of a volcano at Lanzarote

If there’s one thing you won’t be short of in Lanzarote its hiking trails.

With a crazy moon-like landscape and a few volcanoes dotted around the island, it is incredibly beautiful here and another amazing adventure holiday in Spain.

Los Volcanes Nature Park together with Timanfaya National Park are the two main places to hike volcanoes in Lanzarote and they can easily be done in a day.

La Tomatina is a festival everyone knows about.

Held in the Valencian town of Buñol in the east of Spain, La Tomatina is a food fight like no other. Thousands of people gather in the streets hurling rotten tomatoes at each other.

What’s the point of La Tomatina? To have as much fun as possible of course!

I know it seems strange having a food fight as one of the top adventures in Spain but it has become one of those bucket-list activities that everyone wants to do (including me!)

Also, there are a bunch of other festivities and live-music around La Tomatina well worth checking out. Just make sure you book a hotel for la Tomatina beforehand as they can sell out pretty quickly.

Andalucia has become a bit of a Mecca for Spanish paragliders. Not only can you fly in the hills of Andalucia all-year round but there are over 20 established flying sites. This makes it perfect if you’re learning to paraglide or if you want to try it for the first time.

While Ibiza is famed for its nightlife, this Mediterranean Island off the coast of Spain has a lot to offer beyond clubbing till 6am.

Once you get away from Pacha and Ushuaia, Ibiza is actually an incredibly sedate island and an amazing place to do yoga. Whether you want to drop into a class or get away to a retreat, there are no lack of options for yogis in Ibiza .

Walk Among the Roman Ruins in Merida, Spain

In southern Extremadura region, you find the city of Merida, the ancient Roman capital of the province of Lusitania founded in 25 BC at the height of Roman power. Today it is a capital of culture, art and a surprising little gem of a city.

I’ve never seen such extensive Roman ruins! I was surprised to see that Merida boasts the largest and most impressive Roman ruins in Spain. They  are everywhere; amphitheaters, forums, columned temples, fountains, bridges…and they are impressive.

If you are interested in Roman history and architecture, a two-day visit to Merida will convince you that Merida has the best Roman ruins in Spain.

Be sure to include the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano (National Museum of Roman Art). This beautifully curated, three-floor museum has some of the best Roman mosaics in existence.  Here you can learn more about the Romans in Spain and how their influence is apparent even in modern Spain.

Where to stay in Merida

About an hour and a half north of Merida I had one of my most memorable travel experiences in front of the Alcantara Roman bridge. I had heard the bridge, built in 107AD by order of Emperor Trajan, was worth the trip to the outskirts of town.

When I got there, I was overwhelmed by the graceful arches and beautiful symmetry. This magnificent structure, over 2000 years old, was still in use. I walked across it several times to admire its beauty from several angles.

I imagined what this place was like when the bridge was being built so long ago. What was the architect thinking? Was he worried about being over budget? Was he happy with the design? Was he thirsty in that hot sun? Was he satisfied with the work so far? Did he put his heart and soul into this impressive combination of artistic grace and practical functionality? Or did he just want to get it done so he could go back home to his family?

As I was getting ready to leave, I noticed a plaque attached to the bridge over one of the arches. It said, “Pontem perpetui mansurum in saecula” (I have built a bridge which will last forever). I felt the architect had read my mind and answered my questions from 2000 years in the past.

He was proud of his work and wanted visitors in the future to know it. It was as if he tapped me on the shoulder, pointed to his bridge and said, “Hey, you…check this out. Pretty cool, huh? Do I rock or what?” That was one of those travel experiences that make it all worthwhile, one of the ultimate adventures in Spain.

Stay at a Renovated Monastery, Convent, or Church for a True Spanish Adventure 

One of the most interesting places to stay in Spain are the government-run renovated monasteries, abbeys, castles, and palaces known as paradores .

These historic medieval structures have been gutted, renovated and refurbished to look like they did at the time they were built.

They can be a bit pricey but if you can manage at least a one-night stay, go for it. It’s an unforgettable experience and one of the best things to do in Spain. 

Although the paradores are all over Spain, one parador I found especially beautiful is a renovated monastery, Real Monasterio de Santa Maria de Guadalupe , a UNESCO World Heritage site. If staying in a UESCO World Heritage site is a little on the pricey side, Guadalupe has many other accommodation options.   

The prices are reasonable, and the place is unique. The rooms are decorated with the sparse, rustic furniture and period adornments giving you a feeling of traveling back in time. The best part is that the parador is in the village of Guadalupe, itself a spectacular little gem of a town well worth a two-day visit at least.  

Visit the Cradle of the Spanish Conquistadors 

History buffs (that would be me!) will love this!  Many of the conquistadors that explored new worlds came from the Extremadura region in western Spain, specifically from the town of Trujillo.

Among the famous names are Hernan Cortes, conqueror of the Aztec empire, Francisco Pizzaro, conqueror of the Inca empire, Vasco Nunez de Balboa, first European to see the Pacific, Hernando de Soto, explorer of the south-western United States and Ines Suarez, defender of Santiago, Chile. 

During the time of the conquistadors in the early 16th century the region of Extremadura, meaning “westernmost,” was an impoverished region of Spain, far from the centers of power. The harsh conditions and lack of opportunity drove many ambitious young people to try their luck elsewhere. Once one intrepid explorer found fortune in the New World others followed.

Many of the conquistadors did, in fact, find fortune but sadly at the expense of the local populations. Upon their return from the New World, they built spectacular homes many of which can still be seen and visited today. In the town of Trujillo, you can see the legacy of the conquest in the meticulously preserved residences surrounding the principal plaza with its impressive statue of Francisco Pizzaro, Trujillo’s native son.

Hike the Cares River Trail in Picos de Europa National Park

One of the coolest things to do in Spain is hiking the many trails. It is the ultimate of adventures in Spain.

 I had been hearing and reading about hiking the Cares River trail in Picos de Europa National Park for years. The park is a hiking mecca filled with breathtaking trails.

The Cares River trail, also known as the Cares Gorge, is said to be the most challenging of the Picos de Europa hiking trails. It runs right through the heart of the national park between the provinces of Asturias and Leon in northern Spain.

The land is crisscrossed by rivers, deep gorges and dotted with lakes, forests, and peaks, some over 7,000 feet high. The wild landscape is vast and just stunning.

The recommended round trip hike covers 24 kilometers. You can start the trail in either of the two provinces of Asturias, formally known as the Principality of Asturias, and Leon. We started from Poncebos in Asturias to Cain in the province of Leon, one of the best hiking adventures in Spain.

Armed with walking sticks, a block of local cheese and a slab of bread we started out. Other than the first couple of kilometers, which are very steep, the trail is easy terrain albeit high. It runs parallel to the Cares River for a good 6 to 7 hours back and forth.

The trail is alarmingly narrow in some parts high above the river which flows along the valley floor.

Now and again the path takes you through small tunnels carved out of the rock and across bridges that hang precariously over the abyss. All the while, rocky mountainsides tower up on either side of the trail.

Vultures are disturbingly pervasive. Try negotiating a narrow mountain pass several thousand feet above a plunging gorge with 10 vultures circling over your head. Talk about nerve-racking.

After your hike, try the regional specialties, goat cheese, fabada (sausage and bean casserole) and pote asturiano (bean stew with potatoes and meat). These are heavy dishes designed to keep mountain folk going for hours during the winter months. It was delicious! 

There is so much to do in this often neglected but unique part of Spain. There are several adventure sports outfitters in the area offering rafting, caving, climbing, biking, paragliding, horseback riding, and kayaking.  With all these options you won’t run out of things to do in northern Spain. 

Where to stay in Poncebos and where to stay in Cain.

Explore a 250-Million-Year-Old Cave   

Now, here is one cool adventure in Spain. The Cueva del Soplao are a network of 250-million-year-old caves with spectacular interior formations that are must-see in Spain.  

The road leading to the cave is miles of winding and challenging kilometers. Give yourself twice the amount of time you think you’ll need to access the caves.   

Visits are timed so it is crucial you arrive on time. The timing is done to preserve the caves and avoid overcrowding. Tickets are €13.50 for adults. Purchase beforehand to ensure you lock in your preferred times.  

From beginning to end the experience is unique.  They put you on a little train meant to resemble a mine cart. The train enters the cave and goes deeper and deeper until you are in total darkness. An employee greets you with a flashlight and guides you into a clearing.

Once at the clearing, the lights go on, and you get your first sight of the stalagmites, stalactites, and crystallized formations.  It is astonishing!  I’ve never seen anything like it. The staff really knows how to maximize the cave’s stunning features to amaze visitors. This is likely to turn into one of your most memorable adventures in Spain. 

The explanations the guides give are interesting enough to satisfy the curious layperson and entertaining enough to amuse kids. 

On the way back you take the same train and are dropped off at the gift shop (where else). There is also a little café in the entrance. 

Journey through Medieval Santillana del Mar  

Facing the Bay of Biscay, in the north of Spain, almost on the border between Asturias and Cantabria is one of the best places to visit northern Spain, Santillana del Mar .  

Visitors have long described Santillana as “the prettiest village in all of Spain,” this charming village looks much like it did in the 1400s.  The winding cobblestone streets are lined with perfectly  preserved stone houses. Little alleyways open to sunny plazas with outdoor cafés under big umbrellas shielding patrons from the blazing daylight. 

The Colegiata de Santa Juliana, an impressive church with accompanying cloisters, is the town’s main sight.   This historical structure dating from the early Middle Ages was built in order to preserve the remains of Santa Juliana, the town’s patron saint. 

El Porche Restaurant is a good place to eat in town. The lunch special for €14 is great value for the money to eat in such a beautiful place. 

Experience the Picturesque Fishing Villages of Galicia and Asturias in Northern Spain 

Scattered across the northern Spanish coastline are some of the best reasons to visit northern Spain. There are the picturesque fishing villages facing the Bay of Biscay and the pristine areas of Galicia and Asturias. 

Here you can enjoy the crisp local wine and seafood so fresh you can watch the fishermen bringing it into port.  Going from one fishing village to the next tasting the towns’ seafood specialties makes for a perfect 3- or 2-week northern Spain itinerary. 

Some of the best fishing villages to visit in Spain include Baiona and Combarro in Galicia; Cudillero, Lastres, Llanes and Ribadesella in Asturias, and in Cantabria, Castro Urdiales.  There are many more, but these are great examples of classic Spanish fishing towns and among the best things to do in Galicia and Asturias in Spain’s northern coast.  

The perfect place to stay on Spain’s northern coast while you explore the fishing villages, and the surrounding area is the Hotel Miracielos in the picturesque town of Llanes.

The establishment is centrally located steps from the beach, has attentive staff, and serves traditional Spanish cuisine. Plus, it’s seriously good value for the money…a real find!   

Another epic adventure in Spain is to traverse the northern coast in a luxury train .  The Transcantabrico Clasico runs from foodie-heaven San Sebastian in the east to the end of the Camino de Santiago in Santiago de Compostela in the far west, a spectacular albeit pricey Spanish adventure.  

Party in the Streets of Oviedo, Spain

Oviedo , the capital of Asturias in northern Spain is off the typical tourist circuit and one of Spain’s most underrated cities. I can’t imagine why because the city has so much to offer.

Oviedo’s top museums, the Museum of Fine Arts and Archeology are remarkable. The city boasts several UNESCO World Heritage sites from the 8th and 9th centuries, and it is a foodie powerhouse.  One extraordinary restaurant in the center of town is La Corte de Pelayo specializing in local Asturian cuisine.    

A short walk from La Corte de Pelayo is one of the best Spanish activities you can engage in, partying on Gascona Street.

Gascona Street is ground zero for the famous cider bars, or sidrerias, where waitstaff pour cider into glasses from several feet in the air without missing a drop! You’ve probably seen photos of this unique Spanish tradition.

The street is lined with restaurants serving local cuisine and bars serving tapas and wine as well as cider.  Local musicians gather at these establishments and play traditional Asturian music.

The customers join in the singing and frequently follow the musicians out to the next restaurant. The revelry continues way into the evening in the restaurants and on the streets.  A meal here is a rip-roaring good time and a must-have Spanish experience!  This is one of the classic cultural adventures in Spain.

Wild and Wonderful Outdoor Adventures You Can Have in Spain

Beyond the incredible architecture, alluring coastlines and colourful cities of Spain , there’s a lot of room for adventure in its diverse landscapes and surrounding waters. Green Spain , in the north, has incredible vineyards to cycle through, while Mediterranean Spain has heights to climb and sights to see. Whether planned as an entire trip or interwoven with city breaks, Spain is an all-round destination that should be at the top of any Canadian traveller’s bucket list.

Montserrat, Catalunya

Montserrat, in Catalunya, is considered to be one of the premier rock-climbing destinations in Europe. The multi-peak mountain range, an hour’s drive from Barcelona, has challenging climbs, steel ladders and natural bridges along its via ferrata routes. Views roll out over the wine country and Pyrenees with multiple companies offering routes depending on your ability. The mountain range is open year-round, but the best conditions to climb are in May and June. Visit the Montserrat Benedictine monastery here, too, founded almost 1,000 years ago as a mountain retreat and community for around 80 monks.

Garachico lava tube, Tenerife

After the eruption in Tenerife 27,000 years ago of Pico Viejo, a network of lava tubes formed underground that you can explore. Meanwhile, another volcano, Trevejo, erupted in the early 1700s, creating El Tubo de Garachico, off the north coast, where you can dive and swim through a 150m (500ft) lava tunnel. Basalt columns form the entrance for this dive, with stingrays, octopus, shrimp and other marine animals frequently visiting the tunnel. Back on land, on the east coast of the island, Piramides de Guimar are six mysterious lava pyramids whose origins are still unknown. There are three walking routes that you can take to explore them and the surrounding park.

Guadalquivir River, Seville

Guadalquivir, the second longest river in Spain , has a navigable stretch running from Seville, the capital of Andalucia, to the coastal city of Cádiz. Tour boats ferry across the river in Seville, but there’s also the option to paddle down the calm waterway on a kayaking or canoeing tour — a more ecofriendly and arguably more enjoyable way to explore the river. While in Seville, do stop to visit the cathedral, a large gothic building adorned with a Moorish belltower that’s a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Siurana, Tarragona

The medieval mountain village of Siurana, 730m (2,395ft) high, overlooking the Siurana River, is surrounded by wild landscapes of limestone cliffs and rolling green valleys. Routes here are renowned among the global climbing community – and there are plenty of hiking routes for non-climbers, too. Wineries in the area offer tasting opportunities while, on water, you can kayak from the river to a swamp, visiting a small waterfall and freshwater pool along the way. In Siurana, the Romanesque Santa Maria de Siurana church is fully preserved, with an entry framed by rounded arches and views over the reservoir and Priorat region.

Cuevas del Drach, Mallorca

Cuevas del Drach – or Dragon Caves – is an underground expanse consisting of four caves that reach depths of 25m (82ft). The caves are made of sandstone, with stalactites, stalagmites and semiprecious agates. There’s an underground lake here, Lago Martel, considered to be one of the largest underground lakes in the world. It’s possible to visit the caves solo, however, there are plenty of organised half- or full-day trips. As part of the tours, live classical concerts are held within the caves, with an orchestra serenading visitors from a small boat.

Rías Baixas, Galicia

In the lush natural region of Green Spain in the north, Rías Baixas is one of the most country’s prestigious wine regions, and wine tourism is the main draw here, with over 50 wineries along a dedicated route, which borders the Cantabrian Sea in an area known for its seafood dishes. There are also interweaving hiking and cycling trails. Stop at the town of A Guarda, where settlers established a culture of hill forts – ruins of these ancient Celtic grounds have survived, appearing as stone circles scattered down the hill, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Geoparkea, Basque Country

Geoparkea, wedged between the Basque mountain s and the Bay of Biscay, covers a 90sqkm (35sqmi) area designated with Unesco Global Geopark status. As well as rolling green pastures and forests, the geology in this park has an incredible history — layers of rock formation in the coastal cliffs show more than 60m years of history on earth, dating back to the extinction of dinosaurs. Walk along the cliffs or take a boat trip to get closer. In nearby Bilbao, the Guggenheim Museum is an incredible feat of modern architecture that is well worth a visit.

Tabernas Desert, Almeria

Close to the coastal city of Almeria lie the barren badlands of Tabernas. The only desert in Europe, stretching some 280sqkm (108sqmi), it makes a great year-round hiking spot. The Tabernas Desert Loop takes in famous movie locations, while another option is hiking to the peak of Cerro Alfaro, with a 744m (2,441ft) summit. Some of the routes aren’t marked and the summer months can become unbearably hot, so booking with a tour operator is recommended. Further down the coast in Malaga is the Alcazaba Castle — an important historical attraction, this palatial fortification comprises two walled enclosures on top of the only hill in the city centre.

La Rioja Alavesa, Basque Country

This hilly region, made of chalk and limestone, sandwiched between the banks of the Ebro River and Cantabrian mountain s, supports family winemakers while also creating state-of-the-art technology for producing the famous tempranillo wines. The wine route here includes tasting wines aged in medieval caves, as well as vintages made using more modern techniques. mountain hiking is popular in this part of the Basque Country thanks to the incredible scenery – the medieval town of Laguardia is set atop a hill in the middle of the valley — stop by for sweeping views of the surrounding vineyards.

Spain is a fantastic country with amazing food, a rich history, multi-cultural architecture, natural wonders and so much more. There are plenty of bucket list experiences in Spain, and these 25 are the best ones.

This guide is both a list of my favorite experiences in Spain that I have already done and those that are still on my bucket list. I have asked fellow travelers to write about some of the places I have not yet visited, so hopefully, this list of epic experiences in Spain will tell you everything you need to know for your ultimate Spain trip.

About these Bucket List Experiences in Spain

Having heard a lot about my grandfather’s travels by bike through Spain, I always dreamed of visiting the places he had talked about. And yet, it was not until I was nearly 21 that I first visited the country. I arrived in Seville by bus, and that was the beginning of my love story with Spain.

Since that first trip, I have traveled to Spain and Spanish Islands 12 times, and every single visit made me realize just how many bucket list experiences there are in Spain.

And while I keep exploring new places, my list of things to do in Spain is only growing as I learn of new astonishing places in this country. But that is to be expected, as there is an endless number of hidden gems in Spain .

1. visit the sagrada familia, barcelona.

The Sagrada Familia is likely the most commonly known unfinished structure worldwide. Designed by Antoni Gaudi, this basilica is a work of art and it would take a long time to spot every single detail of the facades alone. 

The construction began in 1882, and by the time Gaudi died in 1926, only a fourth of the project had been completed. In recent years, more and more of the towers of the Sagrada Familia have finally been completed, and it is set to be completed within the decade.

Therefore, every single visit allows you to see it in a different state of construction, which makes visiting it a unique bucket list experience in Spain.

Do not forget to marvel at the Nativity facade before entering it to see a real spectacle of light. The colorful windows illuminate the interior in a breathtaking way, which makes visiting it one of the highlights of every trip to Spain. Be sure to look up at the unique ceiling!

A ticket to enter the Sagrada Familia costs 26€ per person and an audio guide is included. If you prefer a guided tour, you will have to pay 4€ more. Most of the time you can also visit the completed towers for an extra fee.

The entry tickets can be bought two months in advance, and during the high season, it is best not to wait too long if you want to visit this bucket list experience in Spain on a specific date and at a specific time.

2. visit Madrid: the Royal Palace & a Crystal Palace

Madrid is the Spanish capital, and as such, it is home to the Royal Palace. It is the official residence of the royal family and is open to the public. If you do not want to tour this Spanish bucket list destination, you have a nice view of the outside from the Sabatini Gardens.

The admission fee is 12€, and 16€ if you also want to visit the Royal Kitchen. Aside from seeing the opulent rooms of the palace, you also get to visit the historic gardens and take in the temporary exhibitions.

And if you are not that big of a fan of anything royal, you can check out a completely different ‘palace’ in Madrid: the beautiful Palacio de Cristal in El Retiro Park. It is a conservatory and was originally built as a greenhouse. There is no entry fee.

3. explore the The Royal Alcazar in Seville

The ‘Real Alcázar’ is the oldest Royal Palace in use in Europe and an exceptionally beautiful structure that combines elements of different cultures and time periods. The oldest parts of it, are prime examples of Moorish architecture in Spain, while other elements are representative of Gothic, Renaissance, and Romanesque design. Therefore, the complex itself is a retelling of Spanish history.

It is situated next to the Cathedral of Seville and the Archivo de Indias, and in combination, these three structures have been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. So of the highlights of the Alcázar include the Palacio del Yeso, the Patio de Poncellas in the Palacio del Rey Don Pedro, and the gardens that include a labyrinth.

A normal ticket that allows you to explore the lower level of the Alcázar costs 14.50€ per adult and 7€ for students (that are EU citizens and between 14 and 30 years old). Meanwhile, a ticket with an audioguide costs 6€ more. If you also want to see the Cuarto Real Alto, the upper royal rooms, adults have to pay 20€ for a combi ticket and students have to pay 12.50€ Just know, that the upper rooms can only be visited in the morning.

On Mondays, admission is free during the last opening hour. If you buy your tickets online, a service of 1€ per ticket applies. All tickets include free visits to the Bellver Museum, the Antiquarium, the Triana Ceramic Museum, and the San Jorge Museum.

4. tour the Cathedral of Palma

Also known as ‘La Seu’, the Cathedral of Palma is a Gothic Roman structure that was completed in 1601. As you enter it, your eyes are drawn up to the ceiling of the incredibly high central nave and the colorful stained-glass rosette windows. This is especially the case when direct sunlight hits the windows, and therefore illuminates the support beams of the Cathedral. It is a truly impressive sight that makes it obvious why some call it the ‘Cathedral of Light’!

Visiting it is a true bucket list experience in Spain, but if you are not interested in seeing the interior, you should still marvel at it from the outside. Visit the Parc de la Mar and see the Cathedral’s reflection in the water. It is a great photo motive!

You can tour the Cathedral between 10 AM & 2:15 PM. A ticket costs 8€ for adults and 12€ if you want to access the terraces that can only be accessed during certain months. If you like contemporary art, you will also love the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament that was envisioned by Barceló. It is a complete contrast to the rest of the Cathedral and is located in the right nave.

5. visit the Alhambra in Granada

With its’ Islamic architecture, the Alhambra in Granada is an important structure that tells the story of the time of Islamic rule in Spain from 711 to 1492. Named after its red walls, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is incredibly beautiful, and some travelers speak fondly of their visit even tho it was decades ago.

Tour the Alcazaba citadel, the Courtyard of the Lions, and marvel at the detailed works of art of this marvelous structure. It takes around 3 hours to see everything the Alhambra has to offer.

With an entrance fee of 31,90€ per adult and 9,90€ per child, it is not the cheapest place to visit, but this bucket list experience in Spain is well worth the expense. If you book your ticket online and plan to visit it after 2 PM, an evening discount of 10% applies. An audio guide in five languages is included in the ticket.

6. explore the Mausoleum of Lovers of Teruel

Visiting the Mausoleum of Lovers of Teruel will make you travel through time to the 13th century and become a part of one of the most  fascinating Spanish legends  – the tragic love story of Diego and Isabel, the Lovers of Teruel.

The tale of Lovers of Teruel has inspired Spanish artists and poets for centuries, so it is a must on every Spain Bucket List. While the mummies of Diego and Isabel were found and placed in the current tombs in 1560, the Mausoleum was opened to the public in 2005.

The entrance costs 9 euros and it´s highly recommended to book a few days in advance. An audioguide is included in the entrance price and the tour´s duration is around 45 min.

According to the legend, Diego and Isabel were in love since their childhood, but the girl’s wealthy family didn’t want her to marry someone out of their social class. However, they gave Diego 5 years to build a fortune, so he left the city. In 5 years he returned rich, but Isabel’s family had already arranged her marriage to another man.

Diego didn’t want to believe that Isabel was married to someone else, so he went to see her and asked for a kiss. She refused because according to her – now she belonged to another man. Diego´s heart was broken and he died at that very same moment. The next day during his funeral ceremony Isabel mysteriously passed away by his side.

How to get there : Mausoleum of Lovers of Teruel is located at c. Matias Abad 3, in the city center of Teruel (only 500m away from the local train station). You can get to Teruel by train or car from all the major Spanish cities like Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia.

7. visit La Alcazaba in Málaga

When visiting Spain, something you need to add to your bucket list experiences in Spain is exploring the Alcazaba in Malaga. It is a beautiful Moorish fortress-palace located in the city center and one of the main attractions in the city that you cannot miss. This fortress-palace immerses you in the Muslim period in Andalusia through history and architecture.

As you walk through it, you can contemplate outstanding courtyards (patios) filled with neat bushes, scented flowers like jasmines, and fountains. Not only can you explore the courtyards, but walk on the walls to get some of the best panoramic views in the city.

To enter the Alcazaba, you need to pay a small fee of 3,50€. However, you can also visit it for free every Sunday after 2 PM.

Getting there : Getting to the Alcazaba is very easy as it is surrounded by other incredible historical and interesting buildings such as the Roman theatre, and the famous El Pimpi bar-restaurant.

8. see the Mosque-Cathedral (Mezquita) in Córdoba

The city of Cordoba, in itself, is a bucket list destination in Spain. The photogenic city features an abundance of relics from its past, including Roman, Islamic, Jewish, and Catholic influences. This melting pot of styles is partly why the city gained its UNESCO heritage status. If you’re traveling in the south of Spain, then be sure to visit the city. 

Although you could see all of the highlights in just  one day in Cordoba , you could easily extend this into a full weekend trip and still find plenty to see. The Alcazar, Jewish District, and Roman Bridge are all great things to see here but the most iconic landmark in Cordoba is the Mosque-Cathedral, which is also known as the Mezquita.

Everything about this building is jaw-droppingly beautiful. Once inside, you’ll be welcomed by the extensive hall which features the signature red and white bricked arches supported on 856 columns. The materials to build this vast structure were taken from a nearby Roman temple.

Inside, you’ll find numerous alcoves decorated with a mix of Catholic, Cristian, Gothic, and of course Islamic influences. In the center, you’ll find the jaw-droppingly stunning  Capilla Mayor  with its gigantic central dome and the intricate  Marsura Dome.

The Mezquita is still a working place of worship, so check the opening times as it’s closed for services. Although the Mosque-Cathedral is open for visitors, to keep the integrity that this is an active building, there is a distinct lack of signage and information boards around. If you want more insight into what you’re looking at, including more details about the building and its history, then hire one of the guides at the entrance.

It’s very straightforward to get to Cordoba, it’s well connected to other major towns by a frequent bus and train service. If you’re staying overnight, then opt for accommodation that’s within the city walls.

9. explore the volcanic underwater landscape of gran canaria.

There are a lot of adventurous things to do in Gran Canaria , but scuba diving is undeniably one of the best of them.

With its impressive volcanic underwater landscapes full of caverns, arches, and swim-throughs, it is an ideal destination for a scuba diving holiday.

10. visit a Pink Lake: Laguna Rosa, Torravieja

Laguna Rosa near Torrevieja is a pink lake, and visiting it is one of the most amazing bucket list experiences in Spain. This bubble-gum pink lake is best visited in late spring or early summer, and a wonderful day trip from Alicante.

There is no entry fee at any of the lake entry points, but keep in mind that it is not allowed to swim in the lake.

Getting there : To get to Laguna Rosa, you need a car or take a taxi from Torrevieja, as there is no public transport.

11. watch the sunset from Roque Nublo, Gran Canaria

There are plenty of amazing viewpoints all over Spain, but the view from Roque Nublo is one of the most epic ones. Therefore, seeing the sunset from Roque Nublo is one of those experiences in Spain that everyone should add to their bucket list.

Getting there requires a hike of less than 2 km, and while some sections can be considered steep, it is on the easier side of hikes. Therefore, it is suitable for hiking alone . Once you reach the foot of Roque Nublo, you will be rewarded with a stunning view over the Tejeda Caldera.

The fading sunlight paints the area in marvelous colors, so be sure to bring a headtorch so you can stay until it is dark without having to hike back in the dark.

12. go diving in the Murcia Region

The Murcia region in the south of the country is another great diving destination in Spain . After all, it hides the Cueva de Agua, a freshwater caves system with a constant water temperature of 29°C. And while it is only accessible to trained cave divers, there are many more amazing dives sites along the coast of the Murcia region.

In fact, the region is said to have some of the best scuba diving in the Mediterranean. You can dive in the Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve with its 7 dive sites including Bajo de Fuera, explore wrecks like the Naranjito or the Carbonero, or do shore dives at dive sites like Cala Reona with an underwater cavern.

13. climb Mount Teide in Tenerife

With a height of 3715 meters, Mount Teide is the highest elevation in Spain. This volcano offers a stunning view over the entire island of Tenerife and even some of the surrounding Canary islands, so visiting it is a bucket list experience in Spain.

If you love hiking, you can tackle the 5:30 hours-long 8.31km hike up to the peak of Mount Teide. The hike starts at Montaña Blanca at an altitude of 2348 meters and includes some rather steep sections.

There is a cable car that can take you up to an altitude of 3555 meters, so you can take in the stunning view even if you are not a passionate hiker or just do not feel like tackling a challenging hike.

A return cable car ticket costs 37€, but you can also only book an ascent or descent ride for 21€.

You need a permit to hike from La Rambleta, where the cable car ends, to the peak. The Telesforo Brava trail has a limited capacity, and therefore there are only 200 permits per day. Each permit is for a two hours long time slot between 9 AM and 5 PM.

It is best to get the permit 2 to 3 months in advance, as there is a good chance that there will be no available tickets left if you plan your hike later. You can get your Teide peak permit here .

14. hike the Camino de Santiago

The Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James) has many routes, but all of them lead to Santiago de Compostela and the tomb of St. James.

The Camino Francés that starts in Sr. Jean-Pied-du-Port is by far the most popular route and has a length of 767 km. It is said to be the route with the biggest ‘pilgrimage experience’ and it is hard to get lost along the way, as the route is well marked by the official sign of a scallop shell on a blue background.

It takes at least 30 days to complete the hike on this old pilgrimage route, and hiking the Camino is said to be one of the best things to do when life overwhelms you and you have to clear your head.

There are plenty of very affordable pilgrimage accommodations along the way that are run on a first-come, first-serve basis. You need the official Pilgrimage Passport ‘Credeencial del Peregrino’ to stay there. In 2021, a digital version became available in the app stores.

If you want to continue onwards once you have reached Santiago de Compostella, you should add the Camino de Finistere. It usually takes 3 to 4 days to reach the coastal town of Finistere, where it is tradition to throw one’s shoes into the ocean. From an environmental point of view, I recommend throwing flowers or a wooden walking stick that you found along the way instead.

15. hike the Caminito del Rey

Although the name gives a mysterious vision of it being an ancient pilgrimage route done by royalty, the real reason behind it, and the name, is a little less intriguing. The Caminito del Rey is an aerial trail, built along the walls of the Gaitanes Gorge in Andalucia province. 

The building of the trail was started by the national train company, Renfe in 1901. In 1921 King Alfonso XIII traveled along this same trail, and hence the name, Caminito del Rey, which translates to King’s Path, was born. 

The original trail wasn’t much more than slabs of concrete and wooden beams suspended on metal spikes into the cliff. It was incredibly narrow at some points, with not much in the way of safety.

Over time, the elements made the bridge impassable, and large sections had collapsed. There are several accounts of people who fell to their deaths, wanting to take on the challenge, which gave rise to the name of the Caminito del Rey being of Spain’s most dangerous route.  

It was closed to access in February 2014, and a complete restoration of the trail took place, then in March 2015, it was opened to the public into the very much safer trail that you can walk today, and certainly worthy of being on your Spain bucket list.  

The Caminito del Rey hike is approximately 8 km long and depending on how fast you walk, can take up to 4 hours. You have the option of either self-guiding or booking a tour. The advantage of self-guiding is that you can walk at your own pace and stop to take as many photos as you like (the whole hike is incredibly photogenic). However, if you want more insight into the history of the Gorge and the Caminito, then opt for the guide. 

Although the trail is very safe, there is still an element of risk. After all, you’re walking on a platform suspended on the wall of the Gorge. If you have a fear of heights, this may be challenging, especially when you have to cross the suspended bridge.

You’ll be issued with a safety helmet because small rocks can fall off the cliff face and you’ll have to sign a disclaimer before you start the hike. There are a limited number of tickets on sale each day, so book in advance. It’s also worth checking the website on the day of your visit, as they close the Caminito del Rey if the weather is poor.

16. visit Isla Lobos

If you are on holiday in Spain, a trip to the Isla Lobos should be something to tick off from your Spain bucket list. Getting a water taxi from Fuerteventura to Isla Lobos is a unique experience. This tiny tranquil island is a great place to unwind. Due to the protection of this area, only 400 tourists can explore the nature reserve per day. It makes it even more special to be one of just a few visitors on the island.

You need to get permission to visit Isla Lobos which is free. However, it does not include a boat trip so head off to Puerto de Corralejo to find out more information about visiting this small island. Getting from Fuerteventura to Isla Lobos should not take more than 15 minutes.

17. hike Mulhacen – the highest peak of mainland Spain

One of the most amazing experiences to have in Spain is without a doubt to climb the highest peak in the Iberian Peninsula, Mulhacen (3479masl) in Sierra Nevada National Park. In the summer months, you can do it in a day by taking the park bus from Capileira to Mirador de Trevelez. The bus picks you up 6 hours later, which gives you plenty of time to hike to the top, snap a few photos of the views and the occasional mountain goat, have lunch with a view, and hike back down.

The more adventurous, make it a two-day hike from Capileira, Trevelez, or Hoya del Portillo, which is the highest point where you can take a private vehicle.

With sweeping views, strenuous climbs, and wildlife spottings, either route makes it some of the best experiences in Spain for outdoor lovers.

Before you head out on this adventure, make sure you have the right  hiking gear , like good quality hiking boots, trekking poles, and a good hiking backpack with enough space for water, food, and the necessary layers of clothes. The weather can change a lot on the 3000-meter peaks so bring layers.

The best way to get to either Capileira or Trevelez is by car, as buses are very rare. You should stay at the village you hike from so that you can start early in the morning. They are both super charming!

18. visit Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote

Another bucket list experience in Spain is a visit to Timanfaya National Park on the Canarian island of Lanzarote. Made up of more than 100 volcanoes and lava fields, this park is among the most special national parks in Europe. The entire area is protected and a UNESCO biosphere reserve so you have to join a tour to visit it.

You can take one of the buses that leave every 20 minutes from a car park at the entrance. During a 2-hour drive around, you’ll see some of the most impressive volcano craters and lava rocks. Commentaries in three languages tell about the area and how the landscape was formed thousands of years ago.

If you have hired a car it’s easy to get to the park – the island is quite small and easily navigated. Otherwise, you can join an excursion from one of the resort towns like Puerto del Carmen where you’ll find great hotels to stay.

Intriguing Cultural Experiences in Spain

19. attend a flamenco class.

When in Spain, you should attend a Flamenco class. After all, Flamenco is the art form that most people think of when thinking of the country. It was declared a ‘Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity’, so learning the basics is a great way to learn more about the local culture.

It is rooted in Andalusian music styles, so the best classes are those in Andalusia. So add a class to your list of things to do in Seville or Granada. It is bound to be one of those travel memories that you will still talk about years later.

20. experience the Las Fallas Festival in Valencia

The Fallas Festival runs each year in Valencia from 15th to 19th March. It is completely free to enter. During these days there you’ll hear the frequent pop of firecrackers, see parades and Ninots all over the City and see Valencia come alive to celebrate this famous festival.

A roaring firework display (Mascleta) is the highlight of each day at 2 PM in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, but be warned it is extremely loud at a peak of 120 decibels!

The Ninots, which are the main focal point of the festival, are made from paper-mâché, cardboard, wood, or plaster and have to be seen to be believed. They are incredibly lifelike and vary in style but often depict current events, cartoons, or satirical scenes.

The culmination of the event is the burning of these Ninots on the evening of the 19th of March. The only one that doesn’t get burnt is the one that wins first place. 

They say that everyone must visit the Las Fallas Festival once in their life and it is definitely a bucket list experience in Spain. 

How to get there : Valencia is the third biggest city in Spain and has a well-served Airport and public transport system.

21. visit the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao

The Guggenheim Museum is one of the focal points of the city of Bilbao in Northern Spain. As much a work of art as a building, the museum was designed by Frank Gehry, a Canadian-American architect, and built on the site of the old port.

First opened 25 years ago, the Guggenheim Museum is easily one of the best things to do in Bilbao, and visiting it is a must on any trip to  Northern Spain , even if you aren’t passionate about modern art.

Visitors to the museum are greeted by the distinctive spider sculpture,  Maman  by Louise Bourgeois at its entrance.

22. eat tapas and pinchos.

There is nothing like finding a great tapas bar in a charming town and trying local delicacies after a long day of exploration. There are so many different things to eat, and being able to order several different things when out with (new) friends is amazing, as it allows you to indulge in the vast diversity of the Spanish cuisine. 

Some of the most popular tapas are the Spanish omelette, patatas, cheeses, olives, and croquettes. Order a little bit of everything to have an amazing meal. 

In the Basque country, tapas are called pintxos. Try some of the regional specialties while exploring cities like San Sebastián.

23. attend a Paella cooking class

The best place to do so is in Valencia, as that is where the paella originates, but these days there are many different regional paellas, so attend a cooking class wherever you are in Spain.

It is bound to be a tasty experience and will allow you to recreate a small piece of Spain once you are back home!

24. visit wineries in Binisalem, Mallorca

Spain has many amazing wine regions, so visiting a vineyard, a winery, or doing a wine tasting are some of the experiences in Spain that you just have to do if you love wine. Binissalem on the island of Mallorca is one of these wine regions and was the first one not on the mainland. Therefore, it is an amazing place to visit and to try some of the local wines.

Book a wine tasting at several wineries like ‘Vins Nadal’ and enjoy the specific flavors of the grapes that grow in this region. It is a fantastic activity if you are traveling with a group of friends and round up all the other food-related bucket list experiences in Spain.

25. eat Churros con Chocolate

Churros with chocolate are a must-eat and a staple of a Spanish breakfast. Therefore, no trip to Spain is complete without eating it at least once, or maybe even every single morning.

If you are in Madrid, the best place to get them is in the Chocolatería San Ginés that dates back to 1894. Be sure to grab some churros and eat them while people-watching at the nearby Plaza Mayor. Six churros with chocolate cost 4.50€.

1. Walk the St James Trail  (Camino de Santiago)

Embark on the pilgrimage of a lifetime! The revered Camino de Santiago, replete with a network of trails, is an ancient route that has carried pilgrims for thousands of years. You can choose from a range of hiking routes stretching across France, Portugal, England, and Spain.

There's the 835 km Camino del Norte, which winds through four regions in northern Spain. Get lost in your thoughts as you walk among jagged cliffs, countryside meadows, and pristine beaches. This long route begins in Irun in France before taking you through Spain.

Not into taking a super long route? We totally get it. The 321-km Camino Primitivo, which is dubbed as the Original Way, may suit your timeline a little better! Most walkers complete this section in 12-14 days.

Travelers are encouraged to book tickets to Caminito del Rey as early as possible, as tourists flock here. There are two types of tickets to purchase; one with a guide that cost €18, and a general visit with travelers doing the trail themselves, which cost €10.

From humble beginnings, we now send over 2500 travellers every year to Spain, each of them finding their own adventure. We provide the freedom to choose your route, itinerary and travel companions and to discover Spain at your own pace.

We offer a flexible, tailor-made experience that gets you in comfortable, friendly overnight accommodation in local B&Bs and guesthouses. We carry your bags to lighten your load so you can concentrate on simply  enjoying the unique culture, food and scenery of the less-travelled parts of Spain. We want to showcase our expertise, by giving you all the resources you will ever need.  In the planning stage, we have free guides, comprehensive videos and a host of staff with their own Spanish experience, waiting to answer your questions. On the route, we use high-quality digital mapping as well as the best maps and guidebooks to make sure you find your way.  

We love Spain and our main aim is to make sure that you do too.  

Temperatures in Spain typically don't dip too low, even in winter when the lows typically stay in the 40- to 50-degrees  Fahrenheit  range country-wide. Summers, on the other hand, can get  really hot , with highs creeping into the low to mid-90s in some places. For this  reason,  we recommend visiting during the shoulder seasons in late spring/early summer (May or early June) or late summer (August to September, even October) to avoid the extreme heat.  

If the hot summer months of July and August are the only time you can travel, consider visiting the north of Spain where temps don't soar quite as high (highs reaching upper 70s in the summer), such as  Bilbao   which is the starting point of the  Camino del Norte .

Spring in Spain

If you are looking for warmth with fewer crowds this is a great time to visit. Spring and early summer  are  also one of the best seasons  f o r  festivals. From Easter’s  Semana  Santa to local Flamenco fairs and the astonishing human towers of Catalonia. This is a great time to visit the   Canary Islands  which can often  be  to too hot to enjoy in summer.

Summer in Spain 

If you are tied down to travelling during the summer months we would recommend visiting the North of Spain which is typically cooler. A great option is the  Picos  de Europa  one of the most impressive mountain ranges in Spain and a superb environment for walking. Autumn in Spain

September temperatures are  wonderful,  especially  for walking and biking. It can still be  pretty hot  in the big cities of Madrid and Seville, however, Catalonia and the north start to soften. September has become a very  popular time to travel for this reason  its now a perfect alternative to Spring .   In October ,  temperatures begin to dip across the country, however, Andalucia can still be in the 20s at this time of year.   

Tip: Do bring a good waterproof jacket if traveling during October as downpours can happen at any time.

Beaches -  there are plenty of places in Spain with beautiful and uncrowded beaches which are perfect for dipping weary feet in and our tours pass many of them! For a hidden Catalonian gem, there is the picturesque Sa Tuna cove near Begur surrounded by pine trees. In Menorca,  Cap de Cavallería with its photogenic lighthouse sits perched high above the ocean. And whilst most people think of whitewashed villages in beating hot sun for Andalucia, the coastline is quite spectacular. On our Walking in Costa Almeria tour, visit  Monsul beach with its distinctive black sands and volcanic rocks, used as a filming location for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Food and Drink -  if there is one thing Spain does well, it's food! Some favourite Spanish specialities of the Macs team include the delicious  Jamón Iberico ,  mouthwatering pork found in the Aracena  region,  Esqueixada,  a tasty salad dish made with salt cod popular in  Catalonia,   Pulpo a Feira , boiled octopus sprinkled with paprika, a speciality in Galicia, and of course you can't beat nibbling on some small Tapas dishes like Gambas al ajillo (fresh shrimp with garlic and cayenne pepper) and Patatas Bravas (fried potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce)! To whet your appetite, why not try a delicious glass of local wine in Galicia, Albariño. Or if sherry is your thing, hop from one bodega to another, sampling their wares in the sherry capital of Jerez de Frontera.

Towns and Villages - away from the amazing coastline and beaches and some of the more well known cities and towns, Spain has plenty of more undiscovered towns and villages well worth exploring. Sotres,  one of the highest villages in the Picos de Europa in northern Spain is a charming agricultural village where  they famously mature Queso de Cabrales cheese in the limestone caves which are abundant in the local area. Another mountain village, Capileira , is well worth a visit, set high above the Poqueira Gorge and with an abundance of local handicraft shops lining its twisty, narrow streets. And near the coast, but perhaps not in a part of Mallorca so well known are the gorgeous honey-coloured  Tramuntana villages of Soller , Deia and Valldemossa .

Every year, thousands embark on various routes to hike to Santiago de Compostela. A deep spiritual sense accompanies this journey, whether you seek it or not. Meeting fellow pilgrims, listening to their stories, and sharing your experience alongside them makes a Camino tour a transformative event.

If you’d like to enjoy some dizzying views, climb up to the Turbón massif in the province of Huesca .  From this magical mountain you can fly over the wonderful Valle de Isábena, or the spectacular mountains of the Aragonese Pyrenees.  But if you prefer sea views, you could pay a visit to Gijón , where you can enjoy paragliding experiences over the sensational cliffs in this delightful Asturian city. Are you up for gliding from one of the tallest slopes in the whole of Europe? With a height difference of 2,200 metres, the descent from Puerto de Izaña offers routes that take you over forest landscapes and valleys on the Canary Island of Tenerife , such as La Orotava and Güímar. And there are also other trails where you’ll be able to admire the island’s volcanic landscape from the sky.

Skydiving might be one of the shortest of experiences, but it definitely requires a whole lot of courage. If it’s your first time, you can always jump in tandem. This way you can focus on enjoying the experience without having to worry about anything else, because the instructor will be the one guiding the parachute. In the centre of the country you can find some of the most highly-recommended places to practise this sport. For example, the municipality of Piedrahíta in Ávila , and Lillo and Ocaña in Toledo .  But there are many other places in Spain where you can enjoy this activity as well. Do you know the northern coast? Can you imagine anything better than landing on its unspoilt beaches? You could start with the coast of Sopelana ( Biscay ) and its impressive landscapes. Or you could go to the north-east of the peninsula to fly over charming villages in the Pyrenees in Lleida , such as Oliana and Organyà.

Bungee jumping

The north of Spain is a very popular region for bungee jumping. There you can find a wide range of viaducts and bridges, surrounded by the rich nature that this part of the country is known for.  In Gipuzkoa , there is a 62-metre-high bridge known as the Azcárate. From there you can make jumps from different heights, so if you prefer, you can start with more moderate jumps. At the Estrecho bridge in Galicia a massive adrenalin rush awaits, with a drop of 105 metres. It’s the main platform for the highest bungee jump in the country. And that’s not all; there’s a big surprise that’s a whole lot of fun: you get to take a dip before bouncing back up again!  Galicia is home to even more hidden treasures where you’ll be able to bungee jump. An example of this is the Gundián viaduct, a railway bridge built over the River Ulla, with an impressive 52-metre arch. At 85 metres high, the excitement is guaranteed.

One destination for a getaway climbing some incredible mountains is Green Spain , which combines the regions of Asturias , the Basque Country , Galicia and Cantabria . Cantabria offers nine different via ferrata climbing routes, which are mountain trails that are equipped and prepared to enable climbers to scale walls of rock using steps and handrails, and more. The village of Liendo, Matienzo and Ramales in Cantabria are also popular spots for lovers of this sport. With the arrival of winter, some of the country’s natural landscapes turn into a magical backdrop for an intense day of climbing. One example of this is the Naranjo de Bulnes in the Picos de Europa National Park ( Asturias ), which has various routes that are only suitable for experienced climbers, as the area is prone to strong winds.  The Region of Valencia is home to another perfect area for climbing in this season: the canyon in the Pueblo Blanco of Chulilla. Here you can cross the River Túria on its way along the popular Pantaneros trail . And in Aragón there are more than 1000 rock faces that you can climb during your visit to Albarracín , a town in the province of Teruel with an unmistakeable medieval character that might surprise you. Want to turn a layover into a trip? These 8 stopover programs can help.

Airline stopover programs offer free hotels and other discounts to incentivize longer layovers.

When you’re traveling great distances, you often take connecting flights to intriguing destinations without getting a real chance to experience the culture. You drop in, scope out the airport gift shop and leave.

A few airlines have been working to change that by running “stopover programs.” These initiatives allow travelers to tack more time on their layover at no extra charge, and sometimes even include a free or discounted hotel stay.

“They’re a good way for people to — at no extra cost — see a destination,” said Matthew Kepnes, the travel writer behind the blog Nomadic Matt .

Should travelers be wary of these offers? There’s no such thing as a free lunch, after all, but experts say you can think of it as a form of advertising.

“Usually they exist because they’re sponsored by the home country as a means of promoting tourism,” said Scott Keyes, founder of the flight booking site Going .

Keyes says countries and airlines have a number of reasons for offering free or discounted trips to tourists. No. 1, it’s good advertising. You may be more likely to choose an airline if they have this perk, and you may be more likely to visit a country if you can do it at a discount. Then there’s the influx of tourism dollars from stopover visitors.

Here’s a brief list of places you can go without paying any additional airfare.

Hot springs, wild horses and otherworldly natural beauty await travelers in Iceland, and two airlines offer stopover programs to go see them.

The first is Icelandair , which has offered the program since the ’50s . The program allows travelers — usually on their way to Europe — to spend up to seven days in Iceland before moving on to their final destination.

Second is the new Icelandic airline on the block, Play . The airline offers a “ stayover booking ” option allowing customers on transatlantic flights the option to stay up to 10 days in Iceland on the outbound trip, the return or both.

Stopover in Istanbul , Turkish Airlines’ program, includes a free hotel stay. It’s open to travelers with connections in Istanbul of at least 20 hours. If you’re flying coach, you’re eligible for a night at a four-star hotel. Business class customers can get up to two nights in a five-star hotel. Travelers must book arrangements for their stopover at least 72 hours before their flight, and will need to be approved for a hotel voucher through an application process.

Pause your journey to Central or South America with an interlude of up to seven days in Panama City with the Panama Stopover program from CopaAirlines. On the airline’s flight booking page, customers can select the option to add a stopover in Panama to flights to or from any destination in its network. If you want more time exploring beaches, nightlife and Panamanian cuisine, the airline also offers a second stopover, but it’s not free. According to the website, there “may be an additional cost” of $250 plus taxes and fees.

Unlock a mini trip to one of Europe’s most popular tourist countries with Tap Air Portugal’s Portugal Stopover Program. Unlike most stopover programs, this gives customers two layover destinations to pick: the beachside metropolis Lisbon , or Porto, the gateway to wine country. It also offers customers a 25 percent discount (excluding taxes) on additional domestic flights if you’d like to add a second stopover city to your trip. The program is valid on certain one-way and round-trip itineraries during the flight over or return, and can be accessed on the website’s “ book a flight ” tab. Click on “add a free TAP Stopover” to see whether your trip is eligible.

Qatar Airways stopover packages , in partnership with tourism organization Discover Qatar , include heavily discounted hotel reservations to sweeten the deal. Packages range from the standard option, offering travelers four-star hotel stays starting at $14 a night per person (based on double room share), to a luxury beachside option that includes a five-star hotel stay, breakfast and all-inclusive Doha Sands Beach access from $144. Travelers can book on the Qatar Airways website, and add stays up to four nights. The program is subject to availability and is only eligible for Qatar Airways passengers with at least 12 hours transit time in Doha.

Iberia, the flag carrier of Spain, advertises the chance to explore the country’s capital city with the Stopover Hola Madrid program. First, select a route that stops in Madrid ; next, you can select up to six nights to stay; then book and browse discounted offers available to stopover customers, including tours, food and transportation. The stopover can be selected for the outbound or return flight. While the airline website says the program is available on most routes, you may need to play with dates to find flights with stopover availability.

United Arab Emirates

The UAE is home to two lauded airlines, each with programs to entice stopover travelers.

Etihad’s Abu Dhabi Stopover markets itself as a chance to explore the country’s capital city with discounted hotel stays. The more budget-friendly “amazing stopover” offers stays up to two nights at four-star hotels, while the premium version offers up to 40 percent off luxury four or five-star hotels for two to four nights.

Emirates has “Dubai Connect,” a program advertised to customers with layovers of at least eight hours (or six if you’re flying business class) and includes a complimentary hotel stay, some meals and transportation to and from the airport. There are a number of stipulations for qualifying for the program; for example, you must have a connection flight with the shortest layover available (so if there’s one with a four-hour layover to your final destination available, you won’t qualify for the freebies). Make sure to read the fine print before booking online. Already booked an eligible Emirates flight? You can add the stopover to existing reservations.

Choose your own adventure

You don’t actually need an airline to offer a stopover program to take advantage of a layover. Kepnes says you may be able to build your own stopover program for cheaper. All you have to do is search for flights with really long layovers in places you’d like to visit that don’t require too many hurdles to get out of the airport.

Last year, instead of finding the fastest or cheapest flight from Thailand to the United States, I booked one with a nine-hour layover in Tokyo ; I took the train into the city, ate delicious ramen, went shopping and even hit up a hot spring spa before heading back to the airport for my flight home. The year before that, I did something similar in Istanbul and highly recommend such side quests to anyone up for an adventure.
