  • Trivia Bruce Horak , the actor who plays Hemmer, is legally blind, just like his character's species, the Aenar, who are also blind.
  • Goofs There are some rank insignia mistakes. Number One is introduced as "Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley" yet she is wearing the rank insignia of a full commander: two full stripes. A Lieutenant Commander's rank insignia is a full stripe under a thin stripe (in TOS it is a full stripe and a staggered stripe). It is not uncommon for a ship's first officer to be a Lt. Commander if they have not been in the position long. Spock at this point is a Lieutenant but he is wearing Lieutenant Commander's stripes; a Lieutenant just has one stripe. La'an is the ship's chief of security and the ship's second officer. She is also wearing Lt. Commander stripes but is addressed as a Lieutenant, but it would make more sense for her to be a Lieutenant Commander. Either way both of their rank insignia are not matching the rank they are addressed by. Ortegas is addressed as a Lieutenant but is wearing Lieutenant Commander's strips. A Lieutenant Commander may be addressed as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander but never as just a Lieutenant, so either her rank insignia or the manner she is addressed by the rest of the crew is in error.

Strange New Worlds has carved out a unique place for itself in Paramount's Star Trek line-up, and fans can't wait to find out what's in store for season 3.

The series follows Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and his USS Enterprise crew as they go on wild episodic adventures, which aim to capture the intrepid spirit of The Original Series.

In the season just wrapped, we saw them collide with the zany characters in Star Trek: Lower Decks and even attempt a musical episode, which caught more flack than it deserved from some fans.

It really goes to show that anything is possible in Strange New Worlds – so without further ado, here's everything we know so far about our next voyage.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 release date speculation

Ethan Peck as Spock in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

So, we've got good news and bad news.

More like this

Unfortunately, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has no confirmed release date right now – and probably won't for quite some time.

The ongoing strike action by the Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America has brought many US-based television shows screeching to a halt, and Strange New Worlds is no exception.

Given the slow progress of the dispute, plus the lengthy production cycle on any flashy Star Trek series, we wouldn't expect to see season 3 any sooner than late 2024/early 2025 .

On the bright side, we do at least have some certainty that it will happen eventually, as Paramount gave the show an enthusiastic advance renewal in March 2023 – before the second season had even premiered!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 cast

Carol Kane as Pelia in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, wearing a red outfit

There's no confirmed cast list for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 just yet, but it's likely that leads Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn would return as Christopher Pike and Una Chin-Riley/Number One respectively.

Other regulars we'd expect to see more from include Ethan Peck and Celia Rose Gooding as franchise icons Spock and Uhura, plus Jess Bush as nurse Christine Chapel and Christina Chong as chief of security La'an Noonien-Singh.

The main Strange New Worlds cast also includes Melissa Navia as helmsman Erica Ortegas and Babs Olusanmokun as medical officer Joseph M'Benga.

Carol Kane and Paul Wesley were among the most notable recurring names in season 2, with the former replacing Bruce Horak's Hemmer as chief engineer and the latter portraying James T Kirk – the role originated by William Shatner.

What is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 about?

While it's possible that the early renewal allowed the Strange New Worlds writers to jot down some rough ideas for season 3, the subsequent WGA strike will have stopped further development in its tracks.

For that reason, we have no way of knowing what Strange New Worlds will be about just yet, but we're expecting more bold and exciting sci-fi concepts to feature.

Is there a Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 trailer?

Alas, there's no trailer for Strange New Worlds season 3 yet. We'll update this page as soon as any new footage arrives.

The Cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Dives into Season 2 and Teases Season 3

All the juicy tidbits we learned from the hour-long panel discussion!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 key art

StarTrek.com

Following the announcement that production for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is currently underway , the SAG-AFTRA Foundation released a Zoom panel discussion as part of their Conversation series with cast members Anson Mount (Captain Christopher Pike), Rebecca Romijn (Una Chin-Riley/Number One), Ethan Peck (Spock), Jess Bush (Nurse Christine Chapel), Christina Chong (La'An Noonien-Singh), Celia Rose Gooding (Nyota Uhura), Melissa Navia (Erica Ortegas), and Babs Olusanmokun (Dr. M'Benga).

In addition to celebrating their first week back in production, the cast also received news this month that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds received a Critics Choice Awards nomination for Best Drama Series , along with a nom for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Celia Rose Gooding.

The hour-long conversation spans several topics from the second season, including the crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks and a franchise-first musical episode , with teases to the third season. Here are the biggest things we learned from the discussion!

Star Trek 's First Ever Musical Episode

Anson sums up the experience by revealing what showrunner Akiva Goldsman shared with the cast, "It's an idea that should not have worked and somehow it did."

And how did the musical episode came about in the first place? Bush cheekily reveals upfront, "It was Chrissy [Chong]'s fault that this all happened," with Olusanmokun backing her up. Chong herself admits, "I was incredibly excited. It was one of my dreams to do that, to be in a film or TV musical. So for me, it was literally my career coming 360 and living out a dream."

As for Mount, he recounts, "We'd kind of been lobbying the showrunners to do something like that for a while. Not because I'm a singer. I'm definitely not as you can see, but I like 'oh shit' situations. I think they're really good for creativity."

Behind-the-scenes of "Subspace Rhapsody"

Chong shares a memory of her first time at the recording studio, "I walked in on Rebecca singing. I think you just finished singing, recording, 'Keeping Secrets.' And I walked into the studio and listened to the playback of her singing. And I had tears in my eyes. It was so amazing to see your fellow cast mates doing something so incredible and out of the box for what we signed up to originally was just... really amazing."

Even the initially skeptical Peck was "blown away by the whole experience," and found himself "very moved by it."

On the the experience overall, Navia explains, "They've thrown at this cast so many different genres and so many different obstacles, and every single person here goes above and beyond. So when I heard we were doing musical, I was not in the least concerned, just, I was very curious about what the story was going to be. And I think all of us, we knew about the musical for so long. We were rehearsing, we were training, we were singing. And then when we finally got the script, I'll never forget being there, and it was Anson. We were in the transporter room. And I think I was with Babs, and Anson looked up from the script and he was like, 'This is incredible. This is really good.' And I was like, "Anson said it. Oh my goodness, what is about to happen?' So we knew that the script was good, and we knew that we were all going to pull it together, and it was a blast.

The cast was also quick to proudly note that the "Subspace Rhapsody" album "even beat Taylor Swift one day," along with the Barbie soundtrack.

Klingon Opera vs. K(lingon)-Pop

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Make Your Blood Scream (Garkog's Version)

One of the hotly debated moments to come out of "Subspace Rhapsody" was inclusion of a Klingon moment in the middle of "We Are One." When Captain Pike hails the Klingons, the fleet, led by Bruce Horak, who played the fan-favorite Andorian chief engineer from the first season, busts out in pop beat like a boy band.

Mount provides viewers insight to how they came to that creative choice, "Speaking of the Klingon boy band, so when you do a show, you're getting a lot opinions coming in at you from every direction. And this network, I have to say, has been really, really amazing about leaving us mostly alone to try these crazy things. But the Klingon boy band was one thing where they went, 'Whoa, hold on. Hold on. Could it be something a little bit more serious? That is more Klingon-like, like opera.'"

"We were like, 'Klingons have opera,'" continues Mount. "The plot point is that they're embarrassed. So why would they be embarrassed of doing opera? We actually had to shoot two different versions of that scene to show them that one worked, and the other one just kind of didn't. And so when they saw it, they let us get away with the boy band thing."

Gooding points out, "The operatic version is a special added moment on the Season 2 DVD . So if folks are looking for where it is, it's somewhere. It's somewhere out there."

Cerritos Energy vs. Enterprise Energy

In the Enterprise's Ready Room, Ensign Boimler and Mariner enthusiastically presents their theory to the command crew in 'Those Old Scientists'

"Those Old Scientists"

The second season also welcomed Star Trek: Lower Decks ' Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid, bringing their animated characters to the wonderful world of live-action, in " Those Old Scientists ," an episode directed by the legendary Jonathan Frakes.

What was it like for the cast to match Lower Decks ' really fast dialogue?

Mount and Romijn credit Frakes as the ingredient that made the episode work. "The episode really could not have happened without Jonathan Frakes who directs on both series," states Mount. "He was really the perfect person. And with the deep knowledge of Trek , to be able to come in and help meld those two tones together. It was really important that he was there at the helm of that."

"The energy on an animated show, voice-wise is going to be different than on our show," adds Romijn. "Watching them figure out how to massage that with the help of Jonathan Frakes was crucial."

The Yin and Yang of 'Spoimler'

Behind-the-scenes of 'Those Old Scientists'

Behind-the-scenes of 'Those Old Scientists'

Reflecting on the Brad Boimler and Spock dynamic and working with Quaid, Peck divulges, "Indeed, Spoimler is a Frakes invention. It was great working with Jack. It's so fun because his character is such a nervous fella, and Spock is so the opposite, and they make a great yin and yang duo, in my opinion. I think Frakes tried to hone in on that. But I'd actually met Jack quite a few years before and was opining, I hope we get to work together someday. And this was just the most amazing venue to do that and with Frakes. So it was a blast working with him."

Mariner and the Evolution of Uhura

While Uhura holds a PADD in hand, surrounded by her research, Mariner watches over admiring her idol in 'Those Old Scientists'

Gooding highlights one of the benefits of being a prequel series is that you can see how a character evolves from who you're introduced to in Strange New Worlds and how they become the beloved characters we know and love in The Original Series. In the case of Nyota Uhura, the presence of Newsome's Beckett Mariner was essential.

"I love Tawny Newsome so, so, so much," praises Gooding. "That's a friend for life now. So I'm very grateful to have an opportunity to work with her. Kind of like what Ethan said with the yin and yang, I feel like Uhura, Season 2, is very book focused, very no shenanigan-ry allowed. And Mariner, as a character, is shenanigans full speed ahead."

"Having her be the one to bring out the more playful side of Uhura, I think, is very important because when we're working in a prequel," Gooding continues. "It's important to show the moments and the interactions and the events that mold the characters into the versions of them we'll recognize later. And so the playful nature of Uhura that she inherits, that we see in The Original Series... it's really special to think that, oh, Mariner inspired that in her. That relationship, this moment, was the thing that gave her freedom to let her very short hair down and just have a good time. And Tawny is such a sunflower of a person. And so for her to be the one to bring that energy out of Uhura, and also in turn, bring that energy out of Celia."

James Kirk stands looking at the tricorder in his left hand while holding his phaser in his right hand leaning against Uhura's right arm as she stands in front of him with her back to him in 'Lost In Translation'

"Lost in Translation"

Later in the discussion, Gooding elaborates more on Uhura's journey following the loss of Hemmer at the end of the first season, "I put a lot of my journey with being young and having to grieve loved ones earlier than an age that is fair. A lot of it was just me turning inward and doing a lot of, what's that word? What archeologists do. Excavating."

"A lot of pulling away that dirt and being very precious with the bones of her feelings," continues Gooding. "And my journey with her was just trying to remain honest and then doing the actor thing of knowing the future version of herself, but having to abandon it. And knowing that she becomes this person, this very joyful, very graceful, very knowledgeable person. But what we do in a prequel is explaining how we got to point B from point A. And Uhura's story is filled with a lot of mourning. She mourns her parents, her family, her best friend, but also the life that she lived before she was a Starfleet officer, when her family was still around."

In "Lost in Translation," Uhura finally meets James T. Kirk. On getting to this moment, Gooding reveals, "Paul Wesley, our Kirk, he was such a perfect springboard. He was such a really just open player and somebody who really kept Uhura from really spiraling and hitting rock bottom. He was someone who was constantly keeping her intellectually activated. And that's where my Uhura feels very safe in her cerebral place."

"That episode, and this moment in her relationship with Hemmer and her budding relationship with Kirk, it's going to inform the rest of her journey," says Gooding. "I am excited to see the parts of it that she may want to hide, or the parts of it that reveal themselves to her as she continues to grow and continue to grow into the version that version of Uhura that we know in the future."

More-tegas, More Genres

Erica Ortegas at the helm in 'Among the Lotus Eaters'

"Among the Lotus Eaters"

Romijn enthusiastically shares, "I'm going to go ahead and say it. For Season 3, get ready for some more Ortegas."

Navia is blown away by the reception to her character, Lt. Erica Ortegas. "It's been so wonderful when you hear it from fans, and I also hear it from you guys, and I hear it from producers about how much everybody wants more of a character," says Navia. "Like that, again, as an actor, I mean, you could want nothing more. What my response always is, is we have such a fantastic ensemble and we have 10 episodes a season, and the reason that every episode feels like a mini movie is because so much goes into it."

"What our writers have been able to do, and our producers, and our crew, and our creative, and our crew behind-the-scenes have been able to do is really pack so much into each episode where we're able to get storylines for all of us and then also our incredible guest stars," Navia praises. "It feels like from the get-go that you have known these characters for much longer than we have been on your screens."

Navia delights in the opportunities Strange New Worlds gets to explore different genres and embark on new adventures. "There's always a scientific explanation for why we are suddenly dressed in medieval garb, and again, in space," explains Navia. "But it allows us to do so many different things. As an actor, it is a dream role where you get to play really everything you wanted to play throughout your career, you get to do in a season. And after Season 1, I was like, what can they possibly come up for Season 2? And they have shown us. And now that we have been renewed, many things to come in Season 3."

In the Kitchen with Captain Pike

In the captain's quarters, Pike and Spock stand in the kitchen with aprons on preparing a meal in 'Charades'

"Charades"

One of the elements Mount was able to showcasing the man Pike is when not on duty, which he workshopped with showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers. Recalling a character planning session in the writer's room ahead of the first season, Mount shares, "There's very few things about Pike that I know. And one of them is that when any crew member comes to see him with a concern, everything else goes away. It's all about this person right in front of him, because that's his greatest asset. He's smart enough to know that his crew is really the engine that runs the Enterprise ."

"For some reason, that sparked an idea in Akiva who said, 'I'm getting a picture of maybe captain's table dinners," Mount continues. "I said, 'Oh, wait a second. What if, because he's a horse guy, so he can't take his horse on the Enterprise . What if each captain gets one ask for their quarters, one special ask, and what if Pike's other thing is cooking and so he asks for a kitchen?'"

Echoing Navia, Mount gives us a tease of what's to come for the next season, "I can tell you that the genre conversation has continued. And what's interesting is that, I believe the strike is what got in the way of our between seasons conversations. When we came back to the table and Akiva says, 'Hey, this is what we've got planned.' I was amazed that there were a couple of ideas in there that came right out of my notes of that stuff I was going to pitch. And there's some really fun ideas and some really good character development that we're all excited to tackle."

Diving into M'Benga and Chapel's War-Weary Past

M'Benga hands Nurse Chapel a device while on the frontlines of the Klingon War in 'Under the Cloak of War'

"Under the Cloak of War"

Olusanmokun reveals a key character insight he received prior to production of the series, "Before we started shooting the first season, Akiva had said to me [that M'Benga] used to be a man of violence. Something along those lines. And so I had wondered what could have brought that about, and I'd gone towards this direction of, yes, he was a man consumed by war at some point. And so that was already getting layered into what he was in the first season."

"And then in the second season, we just unlayered some of that," Olusanmokun adds. "It was a beautiful script to get from Davy Perez, and there was just this journey of going deep into the psyche and the past of Dr. M'Benga and him finding a way to really walk out of the darkness. But going back into the darkness, of course we did in Season 2, and just exploring that and the depths of that and his reluctance to be involved, and how he had tried to get out and he kept being pulled back in."

On the constraints of an ensemble cast and 10-episode season, Olusanmokun notes, "I's a real wonderful treat to walk in the shoes of this character, and I'm sure my cast mates feel the same way about their characters. The showrunners and the writers, I think they've been honorable enough to spread the wealth, and I think that's very important because there's eight of us and it would really, really, really suck to be standing on the headlines throughout and having pitter-patter dialogue and whatnot. So to go through what I went through in Season 1 and have what I went through in Season 2, for me, is just a beautiful blessing."

With the episodic nature of Strange New Worlds , the second season traversed from the crossover episode, to a heavy war episode, to a musical one, and then action-packed, horrific cliffhanger finale.

"When we were shooting the Klingon War episode, there was overlap with the musical," says Bush, "and I had quite a big number in the musical and also was quite heavy in the Klingon episode. So there was days where I would come from the AR wall where we had explosions and medical. We were operating on somebody who was hanging on by a thread. And then I would go straight from there to go and practice being lifted up by six dancers and being spun around in the air, which at first, I was like, crap, that's going to be an interesting transition. But it was actually perfect. It was really good to just cut through the intensity and keep my body in this healthy place."

Delving into the second season's "Under the Cloak of War," Bush shares, "Season 2 for me was wonderfully challenging and stretching in so many ways. And on what Babs was speaking about with episode eight, I also just wanted to shout out to Jeff Byrd, the director of that episode, because he was perfect for that. He was such a perfect director for that episode. He was so patient and just so generous with allowing us to go as deep and intellectual and bodily and just look at it from every single angle and really pull it apart and knot it out, and talk and talk and talk to find the truth of that complex experience."

"For me, the standout experience in that was discovering the depths of Chapel and M'Benga's connection and the genesis of that," adds Bush. "It's a really unique bond that they have. It's familial. There's something about it that's really non-verbal and very intimate. There's like a protector slash mentor. And I think that understanding where that comes from in such a holistic and deep way was so illuminating and satisfying and has brought so much depth to that for me. It was a very, very special experience, that episode for me. Unforgettable."

Spock the Human

Two science officers hold back an angered human Spock in 'Charades'

Peck reveals that initially when he got the role of Spock, it was daunting for him because "this is a very important character to a lot of people."

What has alleviated the pressure is getting to explore new aspects of a much younger Spock, especially as seen in "Charades," which Peck recalls "a fun experience because I need to honor this character, and then do something that's never the character."

"I just have such an amazing cast to work with and I feel safe working with them," remarks Peck. "And the director Jordan Canning was really game to play and understood what I was wanting to do with that version of Spock which was, how far can we take him from who he is, but still recognize Spock in him. And it's an exercise in daringness in a way."

Peck also calls out Spock's relationship with Christine Chapel, "Spock has these teachers that teach him about his humanness throughout his life, and Chapel is one of them. And that's a really special connection. Jess is so wonderful to work with and informing as well of the performance. The characters don't exist without each other, so it was so fun to do that with her."

"At the end of that episode, I was really heartbroken to say goodbye to human Spock," shares Peck. "Because all these things existed beneath the surface. And so, to really wear them on his sleeve was such a relief. And then to have to put it all back away was really sad for me. It was a really interesting experience. Really wonderful. And again, so grateful for that script and so appreciated receiving that."

Romijn interjects asking Peck if Spock remembers what it felt like to be human Spock.

Reflecting, Peck states, "Rebecca, that's a very good question. So that's something that I'm rolling around in my brain as we head into Season 3. How human is Spock now on his path to becoming Leonard Nimoy Spock, at the beginning of The Original Series? How human is he? Thinking about this the other day with Chris Fisher, our directing producer. And I think he remembers all of it. But it's like he's taking drugs and he's had this otherworldly experience. And so he can't really quite inhabit it like he used to, but there'll still be the information, I imagine."

The Impact of Starfleet's Poster Girl

Una Chin-Riley takes the stand during her trial in 'Ad Astra per Aspera'

"Ad Astra per Aspera"

The arrival of Lower Decks ' Brad Boimler and Beckett Mariner meant that the crew of the Enterprise got a hint of their impact on future generations, especially in Starfleet.

At the start of the second season, Romijn's Una Chin-Riley had to come to terms with the consequences of withholding her Illyrian background — a strict Federation violation. On the experience, Romijn reflects, "It was a real honor to get to take on one of the legacy courtroom dramas for Star Trek . Una had spent the first season, and probably for years before the first season, with years of shame carrying around this terrible secret of being a genetically-modified Illyrian, which is not allowed in Starfleet, and putting Captain Pike at risk for giving her asylum. So to be able to go through the courtroom drama at the beginning of Season 2 and shed that burden, I think is a real turn for her character for the rest of Season 2 and moving forward to get rid of that burden of shame."

It's this shedding of burden that Chong noted earlier in the panel discussion with watching Romijn's musical number, "Keeping Secrets," and how that number impacts her character La'An Noonien-Singh who views Number One as a role model, mentor, and close friend.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Renewed for Season 3

Anson Mount and the crew of the Enterprise have extended their mission to seek out new life and explore 'Strange New Worlds.'

The voyages of the starship Enterprise have just been extended! Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for Season 3 ahead of its season two premiere. The show, which serves as a prequel to The Original Series , follows Anson Mount as Christopher Pike the Captain of the USS Enterprise. The news comes as the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard comes to a close.

Strange New Worlds is a spinoff series featuring characters from Star Trek: Discovery 's second season that originally appeared in the un-aired Star Trek pilot "The Cage." The series is set about a decade before Captain Kirk set off on his five-year mission with the Enterprise—the Season 1 finale saw Pike flash to an alternate future and introduced Paul Wesley as the new Jim Kirk. These iterations of Pike, Spock ( Ethan Peck ), and Una ( Rebecca Romijn ) were introduced in the second season of Discovery , which began as a prequel to The Original Series before sending its lead characters 900 years into the future. Discovery was recently announced to be ending with its upcoming fifth season which is expected to arrive early in 2024.

In addition to Mount, Peck, and Romijn, series regulars on Strange New Worlds include Jess Bush as Nurse Chapel, Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M'Benga, Celia Rose Gooding as Uhura, Christina Chong as La'an Noonien-Singh, and Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas. It was announced last year that Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Carol Kane would be joining the cast as "a highly educated and intelligent engineer named Pelia who suffers no fools."

What to Expect from Strange New Worlds Season 2

While exact plot details for Season 2 of Strange New Worlds remain under wraps at this time, we can expect the season to follow up on the cliffhanger ending which saw Una arrested for hiding her Illyrian lineage from Starfleet, with Captain Pike vowing to get her back. Back in March 2022 fans spotted Wesley filming with Chong for Season 2, leading to the announcement of his casting as Kirk . The series still managed to surprise fans by revealing Wesley in the role in the Season 1 finale—given that his appearance there was set years in the future, it's worth wondering how the crew of the Enterprise will run into Kirk again in Season 2.

Time travel is certainly on the table as it was announced at SDCC that Season 2 of Strange New Worlds would feature a crossover episode with the franchise's beloved adult animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks . Lower Decks cast members Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid joined Mount on stage during the Star Trek Universe panel to debut the news, revealing that the episode will feature the lower deckers playing themselves in live-action as well as animated versions of the Strange New Worlds cast.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds returns for Season 2 on June 15. Stay tuned at Collider for further updates on Season 3 and check out the trailer for the final season of Picard below:

Strange New Worlds’ season 2 finale would make ’90s Star Trek proud

(LtR) Jess Bush as Chapel, Celia Rose Gooding as Shura, Ethan Peck as Spock, Anson Mount as Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Una, Babs Olusanmokun as M’Benga, Christina Chong as La’an, and Melissa Navia as Ortegas in a promotional image for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

The promise of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was that episodic television — specifically, the episodic adventures of the starship Enterprise — could still captivate audiences in the age of single-day full-season drops and movie-like “television events.”

With the close of its second season, Strange New Worlds is a fantastic reminder that when you combine the traditional self-contained episode format with a crew that knows they’re getting renewed, you can get great television drama.

[ Ed. note: This piece contains spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ’ season 2 finale, “Hegemony.”]

Anson Mount as Capt. Pike sits sternly in his captain’s chair, wearing tactical armor, with Ethan Peck as Spock visible at his console in the background, in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

That is to say, you can get a cliffhanger in which half the cast is teleported to who-knows-where by the Gorn. It’s a great reminder that this sort of thing used to be Star Trek’s bread and butter.

Back in 1990, The Next Generation ’s season 3 cliffhanger, “The Best of Both Worlds Part I,” showed Riker taking control of the Enterprise after Captain Picard was captured by the Borg and transformed into the chilling entity called Locutus. The final shot of that episode is an electrifying slow pan over Riker’s face as he does the unthinkable, ordering the Enterprise to fire on its own captain. The summer of 1990 was an uncertain one for Star Trek fans, who had to wait from June’s finale to September’s season 4 premiere to find out what happened next.

Is “Hegemony” as shocking as “The Best of Both Worlds Part I”? Nah, you can’t put that kind of lightning in a bottle twice. But it’s still classic Trek shenanigans.

Will there be a season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?

Yes! This March, Paramount Plus announced Strange New Worlds would return for a third season on the streaming service. Production on Strange New Worlds season 2 wrapped in July, so the folks behind this cliffhanger were confident they’d be able to follow up on it.

When is season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds coming?

That’s the big question. At a Trek-themed Writers Guild of America picketing action in May, SNW showrunner Henry Alonso Myers confirmed that pre-production on season 3 is on indefinite pause until the AMPTP can come to an agreement with the WGA.

And actual production will similarly be on pause until the AMPTP can come to an agreement with the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. It’ll be a much longer wait for Captain Pike to come back than the three months of uncertainty between The Best of Both Worlds parts I and II.

Who in the Enterprise crew is still OK?

That said! A lot of the characters in the show will definitely make it out of this pickle alive — because they appear in previous Star Trek shows set after this event. Though M’Benga, Sam Kirk, La’an, and Ortegas all disappeared with the colonists to who knows where, we know M’Benga and Sam will be fine, as they both appear in small roles in Star Trek: The Original Series .

La’an and Ortegas, however, are original to Strange New Worlds , so their stories are less set in stone. That also goes for Captain Batel, who’s nursing a serious case of A Gorn Laid Eggs In Me. Only the real-life crew behind season 3 know these characters’ planned fates, and they’re striking for better working conditions. So until Hollywood can go back to work, and for many months after that, we’ll be waiting.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks

“ Star Trek : Strange New Worlds,” currently in production on its third season, has been renewed by Paramount+ for Season 4. Meanwhile, “ Star Trek: Lower Decks ,” the first animated “Star Trek” comedy, will conclude its run on the streamer with its fifth season, which will debut in the fall.

Popular on Variety

“Lower Decks” charted brand new territory for “Star Trek” when it debuted in 2020, as both an animated comedy and a series that focused on the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). Set in the years following the feature film “Star Trek: Nemesis,” the series has included voice cameos from many beloved “Star Trek” alumni, like George Takei, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Given its premise, concluding “Lower Decks” make sense considering the main four characters all received promotions in Season 4. But in a message to fans, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan left the turbolift doors open for continuing the characters’ stories following their time at the bottom of the Starfleet pecking order.

The “Star Trek” TV universe, overseen by Kurtzman through his Secret Hideout production company and produced by CBS Studios, has enjoyed a robust expansion since “Star Trek: Discovery” first premiered in 2017. Along with “Strange New Worlds,” the made-for-television movie “Star Trek: Section 31” recently concluded production with star Michelle Yeoh, and the new series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” will begin shooting later this year.

“It has been incredibly rewarding to continue to build the Star Trek universe, and we’re so grateful to Secret Hideout and our immensely talented casts and producers,” said Jeff Grossman, executive vice president of Programming at Paramount+. “‘Strange New Worlds’ has found the perfect blend of action, adventure and humor. Similarly, ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ has brought the laughs with an ample amount of heart to the franchise across its four seasons. We can’t wait for audiences to see what is in store for the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos in this final season.”

“‘Lower Decks’ and ‘Strange New Worlds’ are integral to the ‘Star Trek’ franchise, expanding the boundaries of the universe and exploring new and exciting worlds,” said CBS Studios president David Stapf. “We are extraordinarily proud of both series as they honor the legacy of what Gene Roddenberry created almost 60 years ago. We are so grateful to work with Secret Hideout, Alex Kurtzman, Mike McMahan, Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and the cast, crews and artists who craft these important and entertaining stories for fans around the world.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is like Star Trek is meant to be: no season-long arcs that drag along like a rubber band but adventures of the week. I love it!

I guess one-off appeal to people with short attention spans.

i have an extremely short attention span but i love season long arcs. i also love episodic. we’re not all like gabby over there.

Or you know, fans are allowed to have different Star Trek shows that are different from one another.

Why the long wait for season 3? They did the same thing with Evil. Can’t stand Paramount.

The VFX work is very time consuming.

Next Generation managed to have 26 episodes on a consistent yearly schedule. It is ridiculous that shows air 10 episodes every 2 years.

Agreed. It’s absurd.

Shows for streaming and most countries outside the US take 9 months or so to film 10 episodes (or less) regardless of the type of show. Even US network shows can’t turn an episode around in under 8 or 9 days now, and the ones that come close to that wind up looking like expensive soap operas.

There was a strike….

The Writers and Actors strike might have something to do with it.

It takes awhile to create new worlds. The reason these shows look so good. The wait will be worth it

Glad it got renewed! Wish they would have also renewed Discovery. I enjoy the show.

Lots of Star Trek announcements recently, but people should be aware that Paramount is close to being sold (or the controlling shares being sold), so announcements now may not mean anything in a month. Whoever buys the studio would he well advised to take a minute to reassess the Star Trek situation. SNW has its fans, but the success of Picard season 3 shows that a very big audience would like to see a return to the classic Trek universe. They should probably take a minute to figure out what to do, rather than having three or four different Trek franchises floating around.

I hate it that they are making such a long pause and that it has just ten episode, it is ridiculous for a Star Trek show to be that short.

Geez Season 3 not until 2025? I could be dead by then!

Yes! Keep it coming!

Will miss Lower Decks, have enjoyed it much more than SNW and being animated gives it such fun zany stories that would not be physically possible for live action.

But I’m certain you at least watched the crossover episode last season, so it can’t be all bad.

Love Strange New Worlds. It stays close to the original canon. Discovery had potential but fell flat with it’s messaging.

seriously wtf? lower decks ending? budget for that show can’t be that high. most likely strange new worlds will end with 5th season as well given the track record of these shows lately.

Why he’ll does take so long for new seasons to be on. if there value their customers they pick up the place.

Paul Wesley Reveals Why Men Go Wrong

The Saturn Award-winning actor just dropped a shocking horror movie on toxic masculinity.

Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk in 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 3.

Paul Wesley knows a thing or two about playing complicated men. In his new film — The History of Evil — he stars as Ron, a man living in a dystopian, but horrifying realistic, future in which an extremely nationalist version of America becomes the dominant power. In this world, Ron starts as a kind of sympathetic family man but slides into toxic and brutal viewpoints, which transform him into a villain. To say this character is in the mold of James T. Kirk would be wildly incorrect. But just as how Wesley doesn’t play that famous Star Trek hero as a one-dimensional guy, the downward slide in History of Evil isn’t black-and-white either.

“The best thrillers and horrors for me have a deep subtext,” Paul Wesley tells Inverse . “And to me, this was a really interesting cautionary tale.”

After playing Stefan in The Vampire Diaries , and his current role as James Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Wesley’s star is on the rise in the world of genre, and he seems to be kicking into higher warp factors every year. Just before The History of Evil hit Shudder, and just after he picked up his first Saturn Award (for best Guest Star in Strange New Worlds ), Inverse caught up with Paul Wesley to talk about horror movies, playing bad men, and how he’s diving deep into hardcore Star Trek books for Strange New Worlds Season 3.

This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity .

You’re terrifying in this film. What made you want to do A History of Evil ?

My favorite genres, whether they be fantasy or horror are always when there’s deeper meaning. There's an obvious arc here. I mean, obviously who he is in the beginning, is not who he ends up as. There were some similarities to The Shining , which I liked, but all in all, I just thought it was a very interesting take on masculinity and nationalism. It’s a real conversation piece after you finish the film.

This movie really explores the seductive nature of bad male behaviors. I wanted to unpack that a bit.

I think Ron is sort of a little bit lost. Right now, we do have this sort of divide where there are certain men who feel that they need to be jacked and beat the sh*t out of people. And I think the argument here is that you don't really have to be that way to be masculine. I hate to use this term because it's so overused these days, but this kind of selfish and aggressive behavior is a form of toxic masculinity.

This brings me to James T. Kirk. He’s back in Strange New Worlds Season 3. Will he be more selfless or selfish this season?

If you read the book, The Autobiography of James T. Kirk, he's not surefooted in the beginning and he knows what he wants to accomplish. I think he's more open and he’s trying to learn from people and trying to figure out what kind of leader he wants to be. I haven't read all the [new] episodes, but, as Season 3 progresses, you’re going to see him becoming more surefooted. You’re going to see him becoming a little bit more of the guy that you can imagine sitting in a captain’s chair. Does that mean he’s selfish? No, but I think he in a way will seem more selfish because he knows he’s going to have to make decisions that aren't necessarily always going to please everyone.

Paul Wesley at the 51st Annual Saturn Awards held at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport on Feb...

Paul Wesley at the 51st Annual Saturn Awards in February, 2024.

Congrats on the Saturn! What was it like to win a Saturn?

I had heard of the Academy of Science Fiction but didn’t really know how big it was. I show up, and it’s like Chris Nolan, and James Cameron, and Jodie Foster and I’m like what is going on here? What am I doing here? [Laughs]. It was amazing and I was blown away. But for me, because I haven’t done the traditional James T. Kirk — I didn't do a Shatner sort of impression — I wanted to do something a bit different, and that was a bit of a risk. And Captain Kirk is all about risk. And when I got this award, it’s like, I know awards aren't everything, but it was a little bit of an affirmation that, cool, maybe I should keep going and doing risks, taking risks and exploring a version of Kirk that perhaps isn't the one that's been portrayed.

It was just a really nice thing because I understand this is such a beloved character and it’s divisive. It’s just nice to get some recognition. It was a really touching moment for me.

You're a confident guy, you’re a great actor, but does an award like that give you extra confidence?

I have a friend who said — and I don't know, maybe he was repeating a quote — but he said: “Don’t start believing the bad reviews, or you’re f*cked. And don’t start believing the good reviews, or you’re f*cked.” And I think that goes for awards as well. I think the minute you start thinking because I got this award, now I can behave differently, you can’t. I think you're always on a quest. You're always wanting to evolve and you're always needing to adapt. I’m thrilled and honored, but you just got to keep going on the journey that got you there.

The History of Evil is streaming on Shudder . Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 is currently in production.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 3 Gets New Science Lab… And 2025 Release

star trek strange new worlds season 3

| March 28, 2024 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 65 comments so far

In addition to updates on Section 31 and Academy as well as Star Trek feature films , the big cover piece in this week’s Variety also had some tidbits about the third season of Strange New Worlds , which is still in production.

Frakes mystery episode (and puppets?)… coming in 2025

Season 3 of Strange New Worlds will continue the show’s style of mixing up different genres. According to the Variety feature on Star Trek, this will include an episode “framed as a Hollywood murder mystery,” directed by Jonathan Frakes, who describes it as “the best episode of television I’ve ever done.”

Season 2 ramped up the genre-hopping style of the show, but co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman says he is still not sure if there is a limit. From Variety :

“At this point, is there a genre that ‘Strange New Worlds’ can’t do? “As long as we’re in storytelling that is cogent and sure handed, I’m not sure there is,” Goldsman says with an impish smile. ‘Could it do Muppets? Sure. Could it do black and white, silent, slapstick? Maybe!'”

It sounds like Goldsman was just spitballing ideas, so maybe those are just season 4 possibilities. Season 2 saw a crossover with Lower Decks (directed by Frakes) that mixed live-action and animation, as well as a musical episode. While the mention of Muppets may have been a joke, is it such a stretch? It can be argued that Strange New Worlds followed in the footsteps of the acclaimed Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode from 2001, so why not follow the Buffy spinoff Angel, which did a puppet episode titled “ Smile Time ” in 2004?

The double strikes of 2023 caused a seven-month delay in the start of filming, which finally began in December. As of last week, they were just starting to shoot episode 7 . Production for the 10-episode season should be wrapped up in mid-May. As expected, it looks like we won’t see the series return until next year. A throwaway line in the Variety piece noted that Season 3 will arrive in 2025.

Spock’s new lab

Season 3 is introducing a new set for the USS Enterprise: a science lab, described as “a transparent floor atop a four-foot pool of water that swirls underneath the central workbench, and the surrounding walls sport a half dozen viewscreens with live schematics custom designed by a six-person team.”

Here is the first look:

star trek strange new worlds season 3

Spock is studying a “Chimera Blossum,” according to the screens behind him. As pointed out by Jörg Hillebrand on Twitter/X , Spock’s red environmental suit is a modernized version of the one he wore in the TOS episode “The Naked Time.”

star trek strange new worlds season 3

The Variety piece also had some fun behind-the-scenes details, like how the pathway outside the virtual AR wall set is dotted with posters from the Star Trek: The Next Generation holodeck, along with the words “Enter Holodeck” in classic Trek type.  Ethan Peck talks about those signs and working with the AR wall:

“I want to take one of those home with me,” Peck says. Does the AR wall also affect him? “I don’t really get disoriented by it. Spock would not get ill, so I’m Method acting.”

Series star Anson Mount also weighed in on working with the AR Wall, noting the way images move across the wall “make no sense” when you are inside the set and it can be disorienting, with the actor pro tip to “focus on something that’s right in front of you so you don’t fall down.” AR Wall dizziness aside, Mount remains his enthusiastic self, even into his fourth season of Trek (counting Discovery season 2):

I don’t think a day goes by where I don’t at some point stop and think to myself, ‘I’m on fucking “Star Trek.’

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Renewed For Season 4; ‘Lower Decks’ To End With Season 5

I think most of us assumed it wouldn’t come out until 2025 but looking forward to it.

I do assume Goldsman is just joking about the Muppets but you never know with this guy lol.

The angel puppet ep was pretty good. Is this new set a redress of a past bridge?

Never seen Angel but now I’m intrigued lol.

I’m pretty sure that’s a new set.

The Angel puppet episode is hilarious.

It’s a very funny episode!

Ok now have find it and watch it! Thanks guys.

Would I feel lost on the story itself?

I’ve maybe seen a dozen ANGEL eps, and I think this one is a standalone pretty much, though some of the supporting players may come off a little … strange.

I won’t hold my breath for an episode where the Cookie Monster has a cameo…

Normally I would figure cookie monster is a reference to Shatner’s weight, but after seeing him on Kimmel I have to admit he seems to be in much slimmer shape.

Naah, I wouldn’t do that. Especially after just recently giving him mucho respect for THE INTRUDER! The mention of puppets and Muppets above reminded me of an incident from my pre-kmart era as a young filmmaker, when one of my actors had to climb with a flashlight through part of an interior ship set, to get to something that needed repair in the story. What my friend (in 1975) didn’t know, is that I had secreted a Cookie Monster puppet deep inside the bowels of the ship (set). What ensued was shock and fright, followed by laughter, shaking walls, and a shouted “Damn you, Kevin!” coming from the back of the set. I have a couple of pics of that, somewhere.

That’a a good gag. On a somewhat meaner note, I have to mention that in order to get a shocked reaction out of Paul Vallerga (you might remember him as my roommate at the time I was first making CRITICAL ORBIT, as the Devil in MisJudgment Day — that movie we shot in a suite at the LeBaron hotel — or as Felix Leiter in YOU ONLY DIE THRICE), I revealed to him that his favorite actor Robert Shaw had just died while the camera was rolling. This was low on a ‘Jackie, your dog just got hit by a car’ level, but it did work, though for a movie (pre-Vokar) you probably never saw called CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD REICH, made for my German class in high school but later redubbed into English for a contest that channel 54 was having. We used whipped cream instead of mashed potatoes and shot the UFO arrival at Cinema 150 theater, which is of course where the film debuted months earlier.

Oh sure, I remember Vallerga! He was the very serious guy who thought he was better than the rest of us, right? I do vaguely recall seeing YOU ONLY DIE THRICE, a long time ago. And I can recall doing some shooting for your films CRITICAL ORBIT and STARS. We need our own bbs…

I was going to mention my film MAN OUT OF TIME, but it’s a MOOT point. *smirk*

He did have some genuine talent — he wrote the original version of MisJudgement Day, called STAYIN’ ALIVE, then retitled GOD, SATAN & SIDNEY CZINOWITZ, plus another short script called SOUL OF DARKNESS that preceded BLADE by quite a few years, that was one we came pretty close to shooting, and I think you were going to play the grieving and soon to be dead husband of a female victim of the main vamp. I actually storyboarded the thing — yeah, the images were as illegible as my handwriting and printing, but they worked for me — but we couldn’t figure out a way to flood a culvert where the climax was going to take place. Also, there was potential for disaster, as we’re talking night shooting and lights plus water.

But Vallerga always felt he had to scoop stuff in from other people’s work — some steals from MORK for the first one, some steals from STAR TREK in SOUL, right out of AMOK TIME, less than subtle, easily recognizable. He has managed to afford to keep living in the bay area (maybe he inherited his folks’ place in Los Gatos?), I looked him up, and he teaches drama/stage stuff at some ritzy pay-to-go high school, so he stayed true to his roots (although those are his only roots, he looked balder than Patrick Stewart in the image I found.)

Don’t know if I shared this here or not, but one night when we were shooting CRITICAL ORBIT in my upstairs bedroom (standing in for auxililary control on the ship), Vallerga was walking home and looked up at our apartment. We had a bank of four 600 watt lights that were being flickered, and it put such a strain on the local circuits that lights for the entire building encompassing adjoining apartments was strobing on and off. Might have looked cooler than what we were shooting inside! (we were probably doing the electrocution of the John Nelson character Martin Hansard, which was awkward because he refused to lay down on the floor, so we had to shoot everything at right angles with him ‘lying down’ against the wall of the set.)

My main memory of Nelson is when he “kindly” did one little scene in one of my short films in the garage/studio, with an alien (played by my dad) strangling him. Oh, how I wanted to take dad’s place for the closeup! Yeah, N was pretty humorless, unless it was at my expense or yours. BTW, wasn’t I a character in C.O. for a shot or two in the dining room? A shot where my line was followed by your puppy making a fart sound or whatever underneath the table?

If I’d actually finished CO, you’d’ve probably been the fifth-billing character, as you would have had a bunch of scenes down in the ship’s power bay (dominated by a pair of sunglass racks with pulsed fluorescents inside, masquerading as towering glowing energy cores, looking a lot like something out of THE MATRIX 15 years later.)

The only scene I actually shot showing the power bay was when, in desperation, I cast my mother as the ship’s soon-to-be-late captain. It actually looked really good — we were on what was supposed to be a ledge, and the sunglass racks were only a few feet away, but I had blue plastic stretched between us and the racks, which created a veil of atmostphere making them look like they were off in the distance. But mom was even hammier than I was, and she kind of came off like Grace Zabriskie (Laura Palmer’s mom) when she played the captain of the Hesperus in GALAXY OF TERROR (the movie where Jim Cameron electrically shocked slugs to get them to ‘perform.’)

That puppy, Peanut, was probably 8 or 10 years old, but yeah, it did fart right after you delivered a dramatic line, ‘power level zero in 15 minutes.’ It sounded like a bass music stinger! Sort of like what Goldsmith did when Shatner is spelling v … g … e … r – vger!

I just thought Peanut was very young from his/her size, which I recall as pretty small. Making sets is one thing I can’t do these days, due to my lack of wood-working tools and my leg and feet neuropathy pain issues. So we are shooting in existing exteriors and interiors. I miss that 2-car garage studio I had to make films in, back in San Jose. That was great!

My folks actually had a pro portrait done of Peanut when he was about 15 (how he lived that long with the way they fed him — often being dropped whole frozen hamburgers — I’ll never know) that was printed at about 16×20 and must have been much bigger lthan life-sized. They got another chihauhau, Shakespeare, after that, but it was more like THE ENEMY WITHIN version, as it snapped at and bit everybody, whereas Peanut practically invented the ‘trust fall’ he was so sweet.

I still remember the first time Peanut did that for me when I was house-sitting. He climbed up in my lap, then flung himself backwards, apparently expecting me to catch him. It was a very AlanRickman/HansGruber/DieHard moment, seeing his startled expression as he fell (In fact, every time I remember that funny but painful moment, it is with the Michael Kamen score for that film superimposed on the moment as he falls.)

My tolerance for these “Big Swings” directly correlates to the low number of episodes these guys have to tell actual sci fi stories. If we’re talking 24 episodes, I’d be a lot more tolerant of these show runners and writers desires to do other genres. Here’s an idea… why don’t they go get a job where they can actually write for a puppet based show? I’m anxious to see some writers that actually want to play in the world of Star Trek, not shoehorn Trek into something it’s not. This is an unserious writing staff. So over it.

Thanks for describing why I don’t watch SNW.

There’s plenty of precedent for the crew of starships named Enterprise encountering powerful beings who can warp reality. If they do a Muppet episode, hopefully it involves a bratty near-omnipotent kid playing with the crew by transforming them into puppets. At the end, after reality has been restored to normal, we could hear the voice of John de Lancie telling the kid to leave the humans alone for a little while; he has checked up on them in a couple hundred years and wants them to have some time to mature before then. [As long as the kid never identifies themselves as a Q, but maybe calls themselves Quentin or Queen, it wouldn’t break canon.]

Yeah, with modern TV production and the strike, I anticipated a 2025 release date, although they could have done what they did one year with Discovery and given us the first 5 episodes later this year and the next 5 early next year, but I suspect the Section 31 movie will drop later this year and they are trying to not “oversaturate” the Star Trek available at once, apparently believing that too much content is their problem rather than too little great content. Ah well. Strange New Worlds is worth waiting for, so here I am…. waiting. :)

Well hopefully there isn’t a super long production gap between the filming of S3 and the filming of S4. I realize post-production takes the longest, but hopefully cast and crew will take a shorter break to compensate.

I think that was the only possibility.

Maybe!’”

Can SNW do gimmicks? Sure! Impish smile, indeed.

I don’t mind them as long as they are good but yeah I was very mixed on the musical and pray they never do it again.

The musical episode had some good scenes but it wasn’t my favorite either. Although, I do admire their willingness to try new things. I am hoping the addition of the science set means we might actually get them visiting some strange new worlds. Those haven’t been as plentiful as I would like with this show.

Definitely agree about the musical.

I actually liked it more than I thought I would. It was fun and obviously creative but I have only watched it once when it aired.. I still have zero desire to watch it again.

And yes the criticism I and others had about season 2 is the complete lack of any real exploration. I just don’t understand that you know 90% of your audience watch the show for this reason, you call your show Strange New Worlds to emphasize it and yet only spend 1 or 2 episodes on It.

It doesn’t have to be the whole season or even half but should be more than 1 or 2.

Now, now. They explored Vermont and the Great White North.

The episode was technically sound, and I enjoyed it as an aside. I wish they had kept it non canonical though. I despise the efforts to explain it and place it as an actual event. It’s just not believable.

What’s odd is that TV shows usually pull this sort of stuff when they’re in their sixth or seventh season and getting desperate for ideas.

I think it’s because they don’t have any decent Sci Fi writers on the show that could elevate the exploration theme that the show is supposed to be about with it’s title Strange New Worlds. Instead we get awful writing for it’s characters, weak sit com and gimmick shows. Unfortunately as season 2 was probably a success we will get more of more nonsense rather than quality Sci Fi writing or decent ideas. Also why have new ideas when you just take TOS canon and basically walk all over and do what you like with it.

That is why TOS was great, they had actual science fiction writers writing the scripts.

Yeah, could be. I like to think that every writer has at least one good sci-fi idea in them, it just depends if they’re allowed to use it. I mean, it could be an order coming down from the top that these shows need to take “big swings” in terms of gimmicks and nostalgia and so forth to get as many subscribers as possible. But who knows with these things.

Order coming down from the top or not it’s pretty mediocre rubbish being dished out. The fact that people are lapping this up worries me. Forget sci fi what about character growth as there was actually zero in season 2 unless you think romances with zero substance is a good thing in Star Trek. It does make me laugh that Discovery gets absolutely slaughtered here but people think SNW is good story telling and character growth (which it is certainly none of the above). Why because it has recast legacy characters? Older Star Trek did very good episodic and sometimes really good sci fi to boot episodes. SNW season 2 is a mish mash on nonsense episodes and very shallow poor writing even for a sit com series. You know The Orville did it much better than this if you like that sit com vibe. Nah this is not good Star Trek and if the Academy series is anything like this , Star Trek is going nowhere. Just look what we have to look forward to this and another mindless Star Trek action flick 😞

I’ve seen a copy of their master plan for the gimmick episode per season.

S1 – Fantasy. S2 – Musical. S3 – Muppets. S4 – Gameshow. S5 – Sitcom. S6 – Anime. S7 – Bollywood S8 – Mockumentary. S9 – Whodunnit? S10 – It was all a Holodeck program.

Season 2 actually had 4 gimmick episodes for me. 1) Doctor and nurse go John Wick on us 2) Spock becomes human and acts like a complete idiot 3) Let’s start with a cartoon and then turn it into live action and then back to a cartoon again. I can’t say much more but ffs 4) Disney high School Musical with some nonsensical reason for it all. And wow that is nearly half a season of gimmicks lol. Season 1 had potential and only 2 gimmick episodes the fairytale one and the silly Spock brain swap one. Hopefully season 3 doesn’t follow this trend with 6 gimmick episodes 😟 Is this what Star Trek has become.

lol! Im with you, dude.. 10 episodes a season, and they want to fill it with more side projects than actual Star Trek and Sci Fi.

I CALLED IT. GO LOOK AT THE COMMENTS ON THAT LAST ARTICLE ABOUT SNW I SAID IT WAS PUPPETS

Oh, it will happen…..

So it’s your fault then, thanks.

Jonathan Frakes is an amazing director. His best work is FC and S3 Picard. I often wondered what NEM would have looked like with Frakes instead of Baird.

I think “The Offspring” is his best television episode. Yes he’s an amazing director and look forward to more of his work.

I’d take both The Drumhead and Cause and Effect from TNG (and both of his parts 2 from DS9, come to think of it.) But The Offspring is very good.

I consider FC the best-directed of any ST feature, and yes, NEM might have been a wee bit better! ;)

There is a banquet hall in The San Fernando Valley that has a pool in the floor like the new Science Lab set. That one has koi fish.

there is a resturant near my town that has a glass floor and you can see the micro brewery below the main floor making the beers they serve

My guess is that is Cetacean Ops!!!

Too long of a wait for the return of my favorite show. It’s good to have stuff to look forward to, I guess.

It’s funny to see that the shower curtain environmental suit got a modern update. It looks good.

At this point, is there a genre that ‘Strange New Worlds’ can’t do? “

Yes, Star Trek!

Ok lets spitball potential episode ideas since Goldsman is so fond of doing it: I am thinking a Trek erotic thriller or a body horror episode directed by David Cronenberg.

That sounds awesome! In S2, they talked about big swings, but took zero risks. A Cronenberg style episode would be a big swing and something new.

I was even thinking that they should get Cronenberg to direct it since he is part of the franchise as an actor, maybe they could pay him a bit more to get him to direct.

“ they talked about big swings, but took zero risks.”

Damn…

Now that it’s confirmed we are in a separate timeline from TOS, I’m on board with whatever they go with – and will likely skip any Muppet episode.

When was that confirmed?

The episode with Khan basically said it. They said that history has been modified numerous times, which is why the Eugenics Wars (from SNW’s perspective) didn’t actually happen in the 90s. Since Trek deals with time travel by creating timelines whenever there’s a change, it means SNW is not in the same timeline as TOS.

This ^, thank you, Chris.

2025!?!?!?! The people in charge of these shows SEEMS like they do everything in their power to ruin them. There has been so many shows that I’ve lost interest in because of these ridiculous long waits between seasons.

Post-production takes a LONG time…

I think we can give them a break this year, I mean the strikes are the big reason for delays, now if the delayed seasons keep happening then I agree!

Who knows if Paramount will exist next year as an independent company?

Mr. Mount is really a good guy.

If it’s Muppets using puppets like Farscape did, or real Yoda from TESB, go for it. I’ll watch. Particularly if it’s like the TOS small birdlike creatures named Korob and Sylvia… or fake Balok… or other TOS examples. Trek already has had puppetry since the beginning.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Scotty Actor Addresses How He's Making The Character More Authentic For Season 3

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be the first time a Scottish actor will play the role of Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, and new-ish recruit Martin Quinn wants to make sure he's doing it right. The actor recently revealed that during the filming for Season 3, he'd made suggestions about how to make his character more authentic and perhaps a bit less stereotypical than past iterations of the chief engineer. Naething wrong wi' that!

Quinn recently spoke to The BBC about following in the footsteps of Trek vets such as James Doohan and Simon Pegg in portraying Scotty, and his experience thus far on the show. Quinn first appeared during Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 2 ending and he'll have a larger presence in Season 3 of the upcoming Trek series . In the interview, the actor revealed some of the smaller ways he's trying to make the role feel more authentic during production, and the efforts being made by the writing staff. In his words:

They let me put in the word 'baw-heid' instead of 'turnip-heid. Maybe they think all Scottish people are farmers? But they were very gracious about it. And [the writers] are wanting to be authentic to Scotland as well, and that's really nice - not everyone's like that.

Martin Quinn and the writers have made some tweaks to make Scotty at least sound more Scottish, which is something fans from the country will likely appreciate, since even the best performative accent only goes as far as how valid the vocabulary is. I'd imagine we'll be seeing a lot more of the character in Season 3 and beyond, as showrunner Henry Alonso Myers previously said the goal was to put the original Star Trek characters on the ship before they become their actualized selves.

With the news that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was renewed for Season 4, Scotty will definitely have more time to become the miracle worker chief engineer that fans know too well. For a little while he'll have the support of his former instructor and current Enterprise chief engineer Pelia, played by the legendary actress Carol Kane . Martin Quinn seems to be enjoying the job so far, but did mention there are some hiccups in being one of the only Scottish actors on the crew:

I'm constantly having to enunciate because I don't think they know what I'm saying. It’s trying to find the balance, because it’s not just Scottish people watching this TV show, but I want to be as authentic as possible to how I speak.

I can't fault him for that, and seeing as Outlander is a hit show primarily set in Scotland, I think audiences outside of the country are able to adapt to his voice regardless. I'm eager to see him and the cast back in new episodes, and I'm still crossing my fingers we can get at least one episode released before 2025 .

Martin Quinn's quotes about keeping Scotty authentic are interesting, and it leads me to wonder what other ways TOS characters may change as they are introduced in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . (Will Spock be "more Vulcan" or something?) That said, this change stems more from Quinn' attempting to correct the misguided attempts to create a character previously portrayed as Scottish, so it remains to be seen if other characters will change at all when they're brought in.

As fans wait for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, they can stream the previous two seasons with a Paramount+ subscription . Of course, they can also catch the final season of Discovery , which is streaming new episodes on Thursdays.
