The Best Apple Orchard Field Trip Ideas for Kids and Families

Visit a pick-your-own apple orchard this fall! Use these handy tips and plan to take your entire family or classroom apple picking this harvest. Apples are typically ripe for picking from Mid-June to Mid-November, depending on the variety of apples. The most common types are just beginning to ripen at this time of year.

How to Find an Apple Orchard Near You

Organic apple orchards are recommended but harder to find. Check your local newspaper or a family resource guide, or do a Google search for a “Pick Your Own” apple farm near you!

Call the apple orchard Before your visit to ask Questions:

  • When are the best times to visit with the smallest crowds?
  • Ask if the branches are low enough for small children to pick. Odds are you won’t want to be holding your child up all day or hauling a ladder around with you.
  • Do they have wagons available, or if they allow you to bring your own?
  • Is there food available for purchase, or do they have a place to sit and eat if you bring a picnic?

Every year our preschool program looks forward to the educational fun we enjoy at All Seasons Orchard. In addition, our tour coordinators have been wonderful!

Kelly W. | Alexander Leigh Center for Autism

One of the goals at Alexander Leigh Center for Autism is to create experiences for our students that allow them to enter into the community to practice their skills and have some good old kid fun. The staff at All Seasons Orchard were accepting of the special needs of our students and made sure that they felt welcomed. The kids had a blast! We are grateful for the partnership we have built with All Seasons and we look forward to this season.

Jess N. | Senior Citizen Center

Took a senior group to this wonderful location and it was such a great experience. The All Seasons Orchard staff was so accommodating, friendly, and really went the extra mile for us! Cost package was great but not nearly as great as the memories made with the residents! Parking was easy and bus transfer was quick and close to the entrance. We will visit again with a larger group!

Seasonal Workers in Canada - A Farmers Perspective

Fruit and vegetable farming is labour intensive and many Canadian farmers, like Murray, have difficulty finding workers to fill the numerous seasonal positions needed to help plant, manage, and harvest their crops. The Seasonal Agricultural Workers’ Program (SAWP) brings workers from Mexico, Jamaica, and Eastern Caribbean countries to Canada to work on fruit and vegetable farms. In this video, you’ll hear how the SAWP benefits apple farmers, as well as the workers travelling to Canada to work on these farms.

Apples and Mother Nature

Apple farmers must be prepared for whatever Mother Nature might throw their way. In this video, Murray will explain the tools they use to protect the apple orchard from the elements and harmful pests, while still keeping pollinators, workers, and the environment safe.

Have you ever wondered where apples go after they’re picked? In this video, you’ll visit Tom at a Canadian apple packing plant, where he’ll explain how apples are cleaned, sorted, packaged, and stored before they head to the grocery store for us to enjoy.

Quick Canadian Apple Farm Facts

  • There are enough apples grown in Canada for every Canadian to consume 10 kg per year – that’s nearly 100 apples per person!
  • Apples are produced across Canada on over 42,000 acres of land.
  • Ontario is Canada’s largest apple producer, followed by British Columbia and Quebec.
  • Canadian apple growers produce over 50 varieties of apples, but the most common varieties are McIntosh, Gala, Ambrosia, Honeycrisp, and Empire.
  • It takes four apples to make a glass of pure apple juice.
  • Apples are Canada’s second most valuable fruit crop, after blueberries.
  • When it comes to controlling pests like weeds, bugs and diseases, farmers follow a decision-making process called Integrated Pest Management (IPM) which is focused on prevention, monitoring, and control of pests in an effective, economical and environmentally sound way.

World  /  Europe  /  Russia  / Moscow, Kolomenskoye. Blooming apple orchards

Moscow, Kolomenskoye. Blooming apple orchards

Millions of tourists visit Japan annually during the cherry blossom flowering period. It is a truly unique sight: in Moscow, cherry blossom trees bloom only in limited numbers in botanical gardens, and there is no way of finding yourself in the middle of these blooming trees.

Once, as I was reflecting on the flowering of cherry blossom trees, I stopped near a tree fully covered by big white flowers. That was an apple-tree. And I was immediately struck by an idea of going to Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve: having lived all my life in Moscow I, shame on me, have never been to Kolomenskoe at the period of the apple tree blossom.

So said, so done: together with Sergey Shandin we took all the equipment we needed and went there.

Blooming apple orchards. Moscow, Kolomenskoye

For several centuries Kolomenskoye had been the country residence of Russian tsars and dukes. That was the favourite place of recreation for Vasily III, Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great and Catherine the Great.

In the beginning of the 18th century, a lot of fruit trees were planted around the royal country estate. Apple trees, plum trees, cherry trees and pear trees were planted out, more than 6,000 trees in total, and the apple gardens were organised in strict geometrical forms. The fruits that were picked up here then went to the royal table even after moving the capital to St. Petersburg.

Blooming apple orchards. Moscow, Kolomenskoye

Today, more than 900 apple trees grow in three gardens of Kolomenskoye: Kazansky, Dyakovsky and Voznesensky. We went straight to Dyakovsky garden, which is less crowded than other two. And we were surprisingly lucky: all the trees were in bloom! That was an incredibly beautiful sight.

Blooming apple orchards. Moscow, Kolomenskoye

But that's not all! Park workers didn't have enough time to cut the grass in Dyakovsky garden so that it was covered by a yellow carpet of blooming dandelions. I can confidently state that the scene we saw was just as wonderful as the view of the best Japanese parks full of flowering cherry blossom trees. We truly hope that our panoramas will make you feel the beauty of the blooming apple tree garden.
