Experience the magical Serengeti from the sky on a hot air balloon safari ! Drifting above the African savannah plains, while watching herds of animals beneath you, is without a doubt a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I did my first hot air balloon safari in Serengeti National Park with Adventures Aloft; an unforgettable experience that was on my African safari bucket list for a long time.

For most of us, a balloon safari in Africa is an expensive activity, but in all honesty, it was worth every dollar spent on this exclusive safari trip in the sky! In this article, I will share my experience and detailed information about what to expect on a hot air balloon safari in Serengeti, Tanzania .

Balloon Safari in Serengeti National Park Tanzania

Balloon safari in Serengeti National Park

Serengeti. National Park is a protected area part of the Serengeti-Mara EcoSystem and is one of the  top attractions in Tanzania , known for its stunning landscapes, and diverse wildlife. The Serengeti is home to a wide variety of animals including the Big Five , as well as other species such as cheetah, giraffe, zebra, hyena, and topi.

Elephants in Central Serengeti Serenora

The park is also known for its annual wildebeest migration , during which millions of wildebeest and zebra travel across the park in search of food and water. The Serengeti is considered one of the best places in Africa to observe wildlife in its natural habitat, and it's a popular destination for tourists interested in wildlife viewing and photography. Not only on game drives or walking safaris , but also on a balloon safari to witness the vast open plains from the sky combined with a magical African sunrise.

Balloon flight locations in Serengeti, Tanzania

Where does the hot air balloon fly in Serengeti? There are several set locations in Serengeti to start your balloon safari . The best location for this exclusive game-viewing activity from the sky depends on the density of wildlife in a certain area of Serengeti National Park, the location of your safari lodge or hotel , and the ballooning operator you choose to go with.

We did our hot air balloon safari in Serengeti with Adventures Aloft Balloon Safaris . Because of our location at the amazing Pamoja Serengeti Luxury Camp , we started near Seronera in Central Serengeti, 5 kilometers from the Visitors Centre.

Balloon Flight in Serengeti with Adventures Aloft

Central Serengeti  offers a great diversity of wildlife including wildebeests, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and the highest concentration of large predators in Serengeti.

For over 25 years, Adventures Aloft is one of East Africa's most experienced balloon operators with operations in the Masai Mara in Kenya , Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and three locations in Serengeti National Park. Apart from a balloon location near Seronera , they also have a starting point in Northern Serengeti in Kogatende and in Togoro in Central Serengeti.

Adventures Aloft Balloon Safaris in East Africa

Adventures Aloft was the first balloon company flying in the Kogatende area in Northern Serengeti. Kogatende is often referred to as the Switzerland of Serengeti, because of the landscape with hills and the majestic Mara River flowing through the area. This is also the place where the great wildebeest migration can be witnessed between July and November. Between May and July, the Togoro area is a great place to see the great migration as well. Togoro is known as the ‘golden plains of the Serengeti’ dotted with Acacia and Sausage trees.

What to bring on a hot air balloon safari in Serengeti | Pre-briefing?

After booking your hot air balloon safari, a staff member will explain some important information about your pick-up in the early morning, what to wear and what to expect. We had this pre-briefing at the Seronera visitor center  in Central Serengeti one day before the balloon safari. Most of the time, this pre-briefing takes place at your lodge in the evening before you’re going for your Serengeti balloon safari.

Pamoja Serengeti Luxury Camp in Central Serengeti

What to pack for your balloon safari? It’s recommended to wear safari clothing and comfortable shoes. Bring a light windproof jacket or sweater for the cold mornings. To protect yourself from the sun, it’s a good idea to bring a hat and sunscreen . For the balloon flight , it might not be the best idea to wear a hat, but you will be happy with it during the bush breakfast on the Serengeti plains.

Don't forget a pair of binoculars to have a closer look at the wildlife and birdlife. Also bring your smartphone and/or a camera . There's so much to video and photograph in Serengeti from a hot air balloon! I took a small camera bag including some personal belongings and stored it at the bottom of the basket. However, be mindful of what you bring on the balloon flight as there's not too much space to store bags on the floor.

Serengeti Hot Air Balloon ride

I thought it would be cold in the morning, high up in the air. However, it wasn't cold at all! The hot air balloon floats with the wind so there is no wind chill. Apart from that, the balloon gets heated, so you will definitely feel that warmth. As you climb over the Serengeti the air also warms up. Therefore, there is no need to wear too many layers .

In this pre-briefing , Adventures Aloft will also communicate the exact pick-up time at the lodge. Be prepared to get up (very) early, because the hot air balloon safari in Serengeti starts before sunrise!

Balloon ride pick-up and transfer

Your balloon adventure starts before dawn, meaning you will depart from your lodge between 04.00 and 05.00 in the morning . Aloft Adventures arranges pick-up and transfers from most camps in Serengeti National Park. In the very dark, you will be picked up by a driver who will safely take you to the starting point of the balloon safari.

Sunrise over the Serengeti plains

There's something special about waking up under a sky full of stars and watching the Serengeti come to life . Our drive took about 45 minutes, witnessing the first light in the form of a purple sky. When you’re lucky, you might see some animals en route. We for example saw a lion and a hyena along the road which was very exciting.

Coffee, tea, and safety briefing

As soon as you arrive at the starting point, you're welcomed by the staff. It's still dark at that point, but the sky is already turning into beautiful purple colors. While the staff is preparing the balloon for the flight, you can enjoy a warm cup of tea or coffee with a cookie. The hot air balloon gets heated to give it the much-needed lift to fly. The crew holds the basket with ropes while the balloon is getting filled with more hot air.

Heating the hot air balloon in Serengeti

Shortly before departure, you will receive simple safety instructions with a safety belt . The staff will tell you how to position yourself in the basket and what to expect during the flight. When the balloon is ready for departure, you can enter the basket and secure your belt to the basket. The basket doesn't sway because it moves with the wind, so you don't have to worry about motion sickness.

Take-off balloon ride over Serengeti plains

Each hot air balloon can carry 12 to 16 guests , divided into four compartments. This allows extra safety in the basket, everyone will have enough space, and lovely views are guaranteed! We were 3 persons in each compartment, meaning we had a total of 12 guests.

Experience the majestic Serengeti from the sky

When everyone has entered the basket, the balloon pilot is ready for take-off! Your pilot will heat the hot air balloon, and it will smoothly lift in the air. After take-off, you will soon witness a perfect sunrise over the Serengeti plains .

Sunrise Balloon Safari Serengeti

It’s such an exciting and peaceful experience, I loved it! Because the balloon floats with the find there is no turbulence and you won't hear a loud motor. It's just you and the hot air balloon drifting over the sweeping Serengeti plains, with a birds-eye view of the animals beneath you and the sunrise in front of you.

Serengeti Balloon Safari at sunrise

The flying altitudes, controlled by the pilot, vary between 300 meters above the ground and skimming treetops for a panoramic view of the Serengeti. The average flight lasts about one hour. Depending on the weather conditions and finding a place for landing it can take a bit longer or less than 60 minutes. All flights of 40+ minutes are charged as full.

Pop the champagne!

After enjoying the Serengeti plains for about an hour from a birds-eye view, the pilot searches for an open space suitable for landing and makes a landing announcement to get ready for the descent. For landing, everyone has to face in the same direction and sit on the bottom of the basket. If you follow those rules, a smooth landing is assured.

Champagne Celebration with Adventures Aloft Balloon Safaris

During the balloon flight, the pilot stayed in touch with other staff members of Adventures Aloft, that were ready to assist at the landing spot. After getting out of the basket, our experienced pilot popped the champagne to celebrate a fantastic flight experience over the magical Serengeti. After the toast, the driver took us to a beautiful set-up breakfast site in the middle of the Serengeti plains.

discover more about balloon safaris across Africa

Certainly not for the budget-conscious traveller, hot air  balloon safaris are an expensive way to see the African wilderness, but provide unrivaled views and an experience you’ll never forget. There are a number of companies in East and Southern Africa offering balloon safaris – particularly around the flat heavily touristed areas of the Masai Mara and Serengeti plains – and it can make a truly exhilarating add on to any land-based safari. Balloon safaris are easily incorporated into any existing safari itinerary which includes at least one night at a national park or reserve where they’re offered, and just as easy to arrange if you’re an independent traveler as transfers fro your lodge to and from the launch and landing site are generally included. The price for a balloon safari depends on location, time of year and company you book with, but expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $500 per person.

Balloon safaris begin with a pre-dawn wake-up call and quick, light breakfast at your safari lodge or tented camp. You’ll then be picked up and transferred to the balloon launch site for between 6 am and 6.30 am. Balloon flights typically leave around or just before sunrise, as this is the best time of day for ballooning conditions. Later in the day as the sun the land thermals and wind generally get stronger, making for a bumpier ride. An early start also gives you the best chance of seeing African wildlife in action. As with any safari, game viewing can’t be guaranteed, but with an experienced captain and guide on hand to spot the game below, you’ll have a very good chance of seeing a variety of wildlife from a whole new perspective.

Once airborne, the balloon is blown by prevailing winds across the landscape. Aside from the occasional blast of the burners, the flights are magically silent and peaceful. The pilot controls the height of the balloon – generally between 500 and 1,000 meters – and will descend for a close-up view of any wildlife spotted. On landing, you’ll generally be offered a brunch and drink whilst waiting for the vehicle for your return transfer – a game drive with the possibility of seeing the same herds of wildlife or dozing lions you spotted from the air. By 9.30 am you’re back at your safari lodge or tent ready to relax or take a nap before lunch.

Best Places in Africa for a hot air balloon safari

As hot air balloons are at the mercy of the wind and can travel a great distance in the hour they’re in the air, for a specific combination of climate and habitat is required. Savannas and deserts make ideal locations for balloon safaris, the lack of foliage allowing for optimal wildlife viewing opportunities. The best places for balloon safaris in Africa are:

East Africa

  • Well developed for tourists, the great plains area of East Africa ( Masai Mara National Park in Kenya and Serengeti National Park in Tanzania ) provide a wide choice of balloon safari operators and some classic safari scenery and wildlife. This area, in particular, gives the opportunity of seeing one of nature’s greatest sights from the air – the great wildebeest migration, along with accompanying gazelles, zebras, lions  and hyenas. There’s even a slim chance of spotting the big five in an hour from the air!
  • Elsewhere in East Africa the giant Selous Game Reserve and Lake Manyara National Park – both in Tanzania – have a choice of balloon safari operators, along with spectacular landscapes to take in.

Southern Africa Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia each provide their own unique environment for balloon safaris:

  • The wetlands of Botswana’s Okavango Delta are green year-round, and a haven for wildlife and bird-life. Balloon safaris here can be arranged from the tourist capital Maun, or through your lodge.
  • Taking a balloon ride over the Namib Naukluft desert of Namibia you can see the towering sand dunes of Sossusvlei stretching hundreds of miles and up to 300 meters high. Alongside the scenery, there’s plenty of wildlife clustered together around water sources, with the chance of spotting the famous Namib Desert elephants.
  • Zambia’s Kafue National Park contain the vast Busunga Plains, home to huge herds of grazers, plenty of large predators… and jaw-dropping scenery.
  • If you fancy a break from or extension to your safari time,   Cape Town in South Africa has a range of hot air balloon rides over the Cape Winelands area . This gives a birds-eye view of the beautiful wine growing regions, with vineyards as far as the eye can see.

Tips for taking a balloon safari

  • During peak season it’s advisable to try and book your balloon safari at least 2 weeks in advance.
  • Shop around before you book – if you’re arranging your trip independently you’ll find that some balloon safaris are packaged with accommodation.
  • It will be cold in the early morning and high in the air, so wear layered clothes – you can then remove or add as required.
  • Sandals and open-toed footwear are not recommended as you will be doing at least some walking to and from the balloon. A comfortable pair of sneakers is recommended.
  • Keep an eye out for any game you’re most interested in viewing, and if you spy it ask your driver/guide to take you via there on the way back to your hotel.
  • Check what’s included with the company running the balloon safari. Transfers to and from your lodge, and some sort of brunch after touching down are fairly standard.
  • As always, the more pictures you take the higher the chance of snapping the “perfect” picture.
  • Aerial photography can lead to blurring or vibration effects, so  use a fasr shutter speed, enable any auto-image stabilization your camera has and/or increase your camera’s ISO.

A hot air balloon safari costs around $400-$600 . The price may vary from this range depending on the duration and other additional offerings, such as transport from your accommodation.

A balloon safari is a popular activity , particularly during peak safari season.

Additionally, there is limited space as most balloons hold around 2-16 passengers . So it’s best to book in advance to secure your spot in the basket.

Hot air balloon tours may be canceled due to bad weather conditions. In this case, reputable service providers will offer rescheduling options or a full refund.

African Hot Air Balloon Tour: Health Considerations

Two hot air balloons over the Serengeti in Tanzania

Seeing the beautiful scenery and animals from above is unforgettable. But if you have a fear of heights , it may not be the right activity for you.

It’s best to consult with your safari operator for advice. However, the sensation is very different from aircraft flight and is unlikely to cause vertigo.

Hot air balloon rides are not suitable for those with heart problems , mobility impairments , and pregnant women . So, be sure to consider your health conditions when planning, as there are always other fun safari activities in Africa to try.

Another thing to consider is the noise from the hot air balloon burner. This can be annoying for both people and animals. Fortunately, new balloons feature “whisper” burners, thus minimizing the overall noise.

What to Pack for a Hot Air Balloon Safari in Africa

Toilet with a view in the Serengeti (balloon safari)

Before you embark on your hot air balloon safari in Africa, here are a few things to bring along on your adventure.

Although it is often cool in the early morning, it can get warm during your journey. As such, it’s best to pack layered clothing .

Remember, however, that the basket stays relatively warm thanks to the burner. In addition, the balloon flows with the wind , never against it.

A good pair of binoculars (to scan the horizon) and a camera are always handy. To ensure that your items don’t fly around, bring a camera bag or small backpack.

Pack a hat or cap , as your head will get a little warm from the burners above. You’ll also want to wear sunscreen and weather-appropriate clothing.

Tip : For more information on what to wear, check out this guide on the best safari clothing .

While you can bring a few snacks and a bottle of water , refreshments are often provided before your voyage. Additionally, there are no bathroom facilities in the balloon, so it’s best to avoid drinking too many fluids.

Finally, you should bring along your “eagle-eyes” and enthusiasm . Enjoy every moment of it, as this will most certainly be one of the highlights of your life.

I agree that a hot air balloon safari is by far one of the most romantic activities you can do while on an African honeymoon trip! I personally love them because it gives you a perspective on Africa that only birds get to see.

Looking down on huge herds running in syn is a magnificent sight to see and a great photo opportunity.

And I'd have to say that Kruger National Park has some of the most exceptional balloon safaris. During a balloon safari in Kruger, you pass above rolling hills, quaint countryside, orchards, mountain tops, thick forests, and the famous Blyde River Canyon!

Your Experience

From your camp to the balloon

From your camp to the balloon

0400 – 0515hrs.

Some things are worth getting up early for and this is certainly one of them. Rising before the birds and heading out in the silence of the pre-dawn towards the launch-site is all part of the anticipation. Perhaps one of the Serengeti’s more elusive inhabitants will be caught in the headlights on this nocturnal game drive.

Keeping safe & preparing to fly

Keeping safe & preparing to fly

0615 - 0645hrs.

Your pilot takes you through the important safety briefing ahead of your flight as the sky begins to lighten and the crew inflates the balloon - an envelope of savannah gold and acacia green billowing into the cool morning, lit by the flames of the burners. You climb into the basket and prepare to lift into the dawn.

Serengeti from the sky

Serengeti from the sky

0645 – 0815hrs.

Each flight is a different journey dictated by the direction of the wind, where the sights and sounds rise from the ground to meet you. We know where we’ve started but we don’t know where we will return to earth. This is part of the adventure. Sometimes the basket will be gently brushing the tips of the grass and then climbing, climbing through the layers of air until you’re high enough to see the curve of the horizon, painted gold and pink by the early sun. Our pilots not only have years of experience in harnessing the African wind, but are also interpreters of the wild lives in the ebb and flow of the landscape below. Around an hour or so after you lift into the sky, the basket will return to the plains of the Serengeti. But it’s not over yet.

Celebrating a tradition

Celebrating a tradition

0815 – 0830hrs.

“The Winds have welcomed you with softness. The Sun has blessed you with its warm hands….” The balloonist’s tradition is to toast the flight with bubbly. A short walk or drive from your landing spot will find you raising a glass to your time in the skies. We then seek to take care of earthly concerns and whisk you off by safari car to our special Serengeti breakfast spot.

Meeting hunger with plenty

Meeting hunger with plenty

0830 – 0930hrs.

There is truly nothing to compare with breakfast served under the sweeping canopy of an acacia in the middle of the Serengeti plains. Tropical fruit, bread baked this morning and eggs cooked in the bush (or a lovely avocado option), all made more delicious by the location, and served on linen, bone china and Sheffield cutlery in an 'Out of Africa' style. Shoulder to shoulder with your fellow passengers, this is a time to soak in the exceptional flight you’ve just been a part of and absorb the moment.

JOURNEY SILENTLY OVER THE WAKING LANDSCAPE AS THE DAWN CHORUS RISES UP TO GREET YOU

A balloon safari in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro area, Tarangire or Ruaha National Park can be described in one word – magical. In the chilly morning darkness keep your eyes firmly on the vehicle’s headlights to see antelopes leap in front of you. Arrive at the launch site, climb into the basket to be warmed by the burners and rise softly in the twilight. At altitude witness the sunrise over Tanzania. Drift silently over rivers, trees, and savannahs with the wildlife in motion below. Gently land to enjoy a champagne breakfast under the shade of a giant acacia tree.

Romantic, unique and unforgettable, balloon safaris are for life’s special moments

A balloon safari in Tanzania is going to be one of the most special moments in your life. Honeymooners or hopeless romantics will adore drifting over the heart of Africa’s wilderness – an experience that will stay with you forever. With baskets varying in size, it is possible to enjoy a private experience as a couple or family, or as part of groups of up to 16 people.

  • Serenity Seekers
  • Nature Lovers
"We also went on the balloon ride, it was our first balloon ride. Our pilot Joe “welcomed us to his office”, the ride was graceful and amazing. My husband Boyd does not like heights and it didn’t bother him at all."

Northern Serengeti balloon safari

FLY ACROSS SOME OF THE BEST-KNOWN WILDLIFE AREAS OF TANZANIA

Tanzania’s northern Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area form part of a huge ecosystem, which allows for the incredible wildebeest migration to exist. Flights take place in the central, western, southern, and northern parts of the Serengeti allowing passengers to see the migration from above. The Ruaha National Park and Tarangire National Park have incredible wildlife numbers and huge baobabs trees. Here your pilot artfully navigates you over the rivers and tree canopies to see copious wildlife below.

Clear skies and light steady winds are needed for balloon safaris – luckily, this type of weather is prevalent in the morning Tanzania all year round. As balloon safaris take to the air it is possible to journey through the sky when vehicles will get stuck in the mud. This makes enjoying a flight over nature possible all year round. Tanzania has a tropical climate with two dry seasons and two rainy seasons. Dry landscapes with wildlife congregating around water sources can be expected in the dry seasons, whilst green landscapes, dramatic weather and light can be experienced in the rainy seasons.

Champagne breakfast under tree in Ruaha

June until October Best for witnessing the wildebeest migration from above

The main dry season from June to October is the most popular time to take a safari in Tanzania. The weather is dry and pleasant with a minimal chance of rain. Throughout Tanzania, it is the best time to see the wildlife as the vegetation is lower and the wildlife does not stray too far from water sources. In the Serengeti and neighbouring Ngorongoro region, you can see the savannahs from above, whilst in Ruaha National Park and Tarangire National Park you can see huge herds of buffalo and elephants.  The second shorter dry period from January to February is a great time for spotting animals.

Champagne glasses and bottles

Rainy Season

March until May Best for seeing green landscapes with crystal-clear skies

The main rainy season is from March to May when it usually rains heavily on a daily basis. Luckily, it tends to rain in the afternoons, evenings or during the night in dramatic thunderstorms. The mornings tend to be rain-free and early morning balloon safaris are rarely affected. The short rains, which are less predictable occur from November to December in short afternoon thunderstorms. Both rainy seasons turn the landscapes green, whilst cloud formations are beautiful and the light tends to be crisp and golden. It is a beautiful time to see wild Africa from above.

AN EXPERIENCE THAT WILL SWEEP YOU OFF YOUR FEET

How to plan a balloon safari in the Serengeti or Ruaha National Park

Booking a balloon safari with us is only possible in combination with one of our safaris to the Serengeti National Park, Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater or Ruaha National Park. This simplifies the process for you, as we handle the tricky part of organising your transport, accommodation and arranging your flight.

Who can fly?

Balloon safaris in Tanzania are not recommended for people with heart conditions, mobility issues, back or neck conditions or if you are pregnant. The good news is there is no upper age limit. All passengers must be mobile with the ability to bend at the knees, grip onto ropes and climb into the basket.

Rise at 4am to arrive at the launch site around 5:15am where the crew will set up the balloon. Having been briefed on the safety procedures by the captain you take off at 6:45am. After an approximate one-hour flight you will gently return to the ground. Following a champagne toast at 8:30am, you will be taken to enjoy a bush breakfast under the shade of a giant Acacia tree.

Tanzania’s weather offers great conditions for balloon safaris all year round. However, safety is always the top priority: should a balloon ride have to be cancelled due to unfavourable weather conditions, you will be refunded your money or can postpone the ride to the next day.

Mornings start off very cold but warm up quickly, so a warm layer that you can remove later is essential. Trousers, long-sleeved shirts, and a hat to protect from the radiant heat from the burners are important. Passengers can bring a small bag onto the flight, which is perfect for storing cameras, binoculars and suncream.

Scared of heights?

Many passengers who are scared of heights confess to not having sensed the fear of vertigo because the huge wicker basket provides a sense of safety. What’s more, the basket moves in sync with the balloon. Consequently, it does not sway, and passengers rarely experience motion sickness.

Is a balloon safari in Tanzania safe?

With our partner’s thirty years of experience, you will be in safe hands. Experienced pilots carefully assess weather forecasts to decide if it is safe to fly. Luckily, the weather in Tanzania is relatively consistent making it possible to fly almost all year round.

The balloon equipment used is of the best quality and is kept in the best condition. As a result, the balloons are retired after only 850 hours of flight to ensure all the equipment is in perfect working order. The wicker baskets have individual compartments that hold 2 to 4 people, plus, a seat, safety belt and a rope around the inside edge to give you something secure to hold onto.

Before take-off, the pilot will run through all the safety instructions so that you know what to do and expect during the flight. You will then journey over the landscape to return gently to the ground one hour later.

Can children join a balloon safari?

Children from seven years old can take part in a balloon safari. However, if your child is six years old, 1.40cm tall, understands English and listens to instructions it is possible for them to use a special cushion and seatbelt so they can also join the balloon safari.

If your children are under six years of age they can be looked after by a dedicated chaperone on the ground who will accompany them in a vehicle to where you will touch down, so that they can watch you arrive and then enjoy the bush breakfast with you.

To build some variety into your itinerary, you may consider adding activities that get you out of the safari vehicle. One splendid option is a hot air balloon safari over the Maasai Mara , a whimsical way to zoom out and appreciate the vastness of this very special place. However, ballooning isn’t to everyone’s taste. Here’s what to expect before deciding if it’s an activity you should experience on your Kenyan safari.

What is a balloon safari?

balloon safari location

A balloon safari is a Kenyan spin on a classic hot air balloon experience. Floating over the Mara, you’re backdropped by picture-perfect African plains backlit by a glorious rising sun. You’re likely to see animals like hippos, elephants, giraffes and impala—hence “balloon safari”—but Extraordinary Journeys safari specialists emphasize that this experience shouldn’t be booked for its game viewing, so much as the pure pleasure of drifting over the Mara.

In setting expectations, it’s important to acknowledge that ballooning is not a private experience. Flights are shared, accommodating up to 16 passengers. The oversized basket is separated into four sections, each containing a bench which comfortably fits up to four guests. Don’t worry, you won’t be seated within a section with passengers who are not on your booking. Balloons do not need to be fully booked in order to depart, so some lucky passengers may enjoy a half-full/semi-private flight.

What is taking a hot air balloon over the Maasai Mara like?

balloon safari location

The magic of ballooning in the Mara peaks as you float, suspended above the African savannah, taking in the glory of the rising morning sun painting the sky in a kaleidoscope of color. Apart from an intermittent hiss of flames overhead, it’s eerily quiet. From this bird’s eye view, drink in the vast, unspoiled landscape as far as you can see—interrupted only by the horizon. As you drift, wildlife-dotted plains give way to serpentine rivers hugged by trees where you’re likely to spy a pod of hippos. Post-flight, take a seat back on Earth for a hot bush breakfast and a fizzy Champagne toast. Hot air ballooning in the Mara is an experience that many of our clients describe as a trip highlight, especially when shared in the company of loved ones.

Extraordinary Journeys Safari Specialist Amelia Adamson describes her Maasai Mara ballooning experience: “Sunrises and sunsets are just better in Africa—they’re so red. The landscapes are vast, it’s unpolluted and there are no buildings. You’re just a little higher up so you can see even [more] of the Mara landscape. It’s really beautiful. You’re also up there floating somewhat near another balloon while viewing sunrise. That’s kind of the best part of it.”

What happens on a hot air balloon safari ride in the Maasai Mara?

balloon safari location

You’ll be fetched from your camp before daybreak and transferred to the departure point. The drive will take place cloaked in darkness. Upon arrival, you’ll sip tea or coffee while the ground crew assembles no more than a handful of balloons. A safety briefing will take place and as the light of day softly illuminates the horizon, you’ll enter your designated section by climbing over the lip of the basket. During take-off, passengers sit on the bench and grasp the handles. Once off the ground, the pilot will give the verbal okay to stand. A burst of flame will coax the balloon skyward. Along with a few other balloons, you’ll begin drifting, low at first, then rising up mid-flight and arcing back to the ground to prepare for landing. During the ride, pilots double as guides, offering insights and highlighting points of interest. In our experience, pilots are charismatic personalities who contribute to the memorability of the experience. Thanks to the cumbersome nature of navigating a hot air balloon, the flight path is sketched in pencil rather than ink—though efforts are taken to land near the breakfast set-up. Ideally, you’ll be able to walk to it; realistically, you’ll be picked up and driven a short distance to breakfast.

Passengers should also be prepared for an eventful landing. The balloon does not land squarely on the ground in a vertical, downward motion. Instead, the inertia of a gentle-but-sweeping landing may cause some bumpiness, and depending on the inertia of the balloon, may cause the basket to tip. Not to worry—you will be seated and any tipping is experienced in slow motion. Actually, it’s considered good luck and your pilot will likely capture the souvenir moment by jumping out and snapping a group photo.

What wildlife will I see on a balloon safari in the Maasai Mara?

balloon safari location

You’re likely to spot pods of hippos lounging in the river. On land, you’ll probably see elephants, giraffes, antelope, zebras, gazelles and wildebeest. Less likely but reported by our staff and clients are lion, leopard, and hyena sightings. That said, hot air ballooning won’t be the best game viewing of your trip. When the balloon’s flame is not engaged, the experience is a quiet one. When applied, the hiss tends to scare off any wildlife ambling in close proximity.  What’s more, pilots don’t “steer” the balloons, so wildlife can not be pursued. In combination, these factors make a hot air balloon a less-than-ideal safari vehicle—yet another reason we position the activity as a unique and memorable experience where wildlife sightings are the cherry on top.

How long is a hot air balloon ride in the Maasai Mara?

balloon safari location

The period of time spent drifting in flight lasts approximately 45 minutes to an hour. A long table bush breakfast follows.

How long the total excursion takes depends on your camp’s location relative to the balloon departure point. (Our safari specialists’ preferred operator departs from the centrally located Little Governor’s Camp which means guests who stay there can arrive on foot.) If you are lodging within the Reserve, the transfer may only take half an hour. Those staying in the adjacent private conservancies might budget an extra hour or two round-trip. Typically, guests depart before sunrise and are back at their camp by mid- to-late morning.

How much is a hot air balloon ride in the Maasai Mara?

balloon safari location

Depending whether you visit during low, high or peak season, a hot air balloon safari in the Mara will cost $650 – $800. You can expect ballooning during the height of The Great Migration to cost more than shoulder season.

Hot air balloon rides in the Maasai Mara operate year-round, though less popular during the rainy seasons. Though cancellations due to wind or rain are rare, if ballooning is on your bucket list, it’s prudent to schedule it earlier in your itinerary in the event weather postpones it by a day or two.

How far in advance should I book a hot air balloon safari in the Maasai Mara?

balloon safari location

Ballooning in the Mara is popular and there are only a handful of operators to choose from. Those who want to balloon with a group or their family will want to book in advance to guarantee members are in the same basket on their preferred date. Travelers who are interested in ballooning but won’t be heartbroken to miss out on it might consider booking on the ground, direct through their camp in order to save a little bit of money.

What should I bring on a hot air balloon safari in Kenya?

balloon safari location

  • Pack or wear layers. You’ll be departing before sunrise, so dress in layers to avoid catching a morning chill.
  • Sun accessories (hat, sunglasses)
  • Cash to tip your pilot (~$10 per passenger is appropriate)

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife

  • Posted on April 14, 2018 July 26, 2018

  • 8 minute read

balloon safari location

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

balloon safari location

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

balloon safari location

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

balloon safari location

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

balloon safari location

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

balloon safari location

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.
