I never knew that there are so many places to explore in teh city of Bangalore. In my visit to Bangalore I will take help of your post for preparing the itienary for sure.

I visited Bangalore very briefly for a business trip in 2019. And I didn’t get to see much, but I was staying near the St Marks Cathedral, so had a glimpse of that. Then walked around Cubbon Park. Now, all the others are on list, should I ever go again.

Wow!!! That’s quite a lot to comprehend but very informative as well. I didn’t know Bangalore have tons of amazing places to visit. Best things to do in Bangalore

1.  Bangalore Palace

What is it?  A palace inspired by Windsor Castle in England, with distinct Tudor style. 

Why go?  The Bangalore Palace is one of Bangalore’s most well-known landmarks. It was built in 1878 by Maharaja Chamarajendra Wadiyar, and looks like something straight out of a fairytale, features stunning Gothic-style stained glass windows, Victorian furniture, tall turrets and towers, and intricate carvings. Inside, you’ll find art from the nineteenth and twentieth century as well as old family portraits. As well as being beautiful to visit all times of year, the palace hosts shows, concerts and more. 

2.  Ulsoor Lake

What is it? Located in the heart of the city, Ulsoor Lake is one of the largest lakes in Bangalore spanning an area of over 120 acres. 

Why go? If you want to relax in peace and quiet, Ulsoor offers just that. With several islands that offer plenty of space to relax and take in the serenity of the lake, it also has boating facilities for those looking to get active. There’s also a walking track around the lake, perfect for a quiet stroll amidst the bustling city life.

3.  Government Museum

What is it? Established in 1865, the Government Museum is one of the oldest museums in India.

Why go? The Government Museum showcases historically significant and rare archaeological and geological artefacts. Whether you're interested in Neolithic pottery, jewellery, coins and paintings from ancient Indian kingdoms or sculptures and inscriptions, something at the museum will likely pique your interest. Situated right along the Government Museum is the Venkatappa Art Gallery, dedicated to showcasing the artwork by the famous artisan of Karnataka, K. Venkatappa.

4.  Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace

What is it? The summer abode of the former ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan.

Why go? The palace is worth visiting for its amazing architecture. The palace as it stands today, in Indo-Islamic architecture, was completed in 1791. Predominantly made of teakwood, the most eye-catching feature is its sturdy pillars and floral motifs adorning the walls and ceilings of the palace.

5.  ISKCON Temple

What is it? Perched on Hare Krishna Hill, this is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Why go? It is said to be one of the largest ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) temples in the world, which makes it worthy of a visit. The temple has four gopurams (towers), each connected to the other by a glazed-glass canopy. The main shrine, called Rajagopuram, is known for its beautifully decorated idols of Sri Radha-Krishna; plus the ceilings are adorned with magnificent paintings that depict Lord Krishna’s pastimes. Prayers and recitals along with spiritual workshops are held regularly, and visitors are welcome to attend. There’s also an ISKCON Vedic theatre, exhibit areas, a Vedic museum, an open-air amphitheatre and beautifully landscaped gardens within the premises.

6.  KR Market

What is it? One of the largest flower markets in Asia.

Why go? To experience the heart of Bangalore, head to the KR Market. Here you’ll find a variety of wares including copper goods, spices, fruits, fresh produces, utensils, flowers and food stalls. The crowds and congestion can make the experience a little overwhelming, so we recommend taking a guided tour, which will not only help you get around and grab great deals but will tell you about the market’s history.

7.  Bull Temple

What is it? A sixteenth-century Hindu temple dedicated to Nandi, the bull.

Why go?  Constructed in Dravidian architectural style, this stunning building (which is also known as Nandi Temple) is the city’s most popular religious sanctuary. Besides the religious significance, the dominant feature of the temple is the immense idol of Nandi. Carved out of a single granite rock, this sculpture is four-and-a-half metres tall and six metres long and is always decorated with flower garlands.

8.  Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum

What is it? A science and technology museum, located just metres away from the Government Museum.

Why go? Spread over five floors, the museum features an array of interactive exhibits that cover everything from mechanical devices and electronics to old-world locomotives, outer space, dinosaurs, the human body and biotechnology. There's also an auditorium, telemedicine facility and a 3D theatre, along with science demonstrations and taramandal shows held here throughout the year.

9.  Janapada Loka

What is it? A folk museum where you’ll learn about Bangalore’s fascinating history.

Why go? If you're interested in the region of Karnataka’s folk art and culture, extend your stay in Bangalore to visit Janapada Loka, located about 35 miles from the city. It is divided into different wings, displaying a collection of more than 5,000 folk objects. Expect to see rural household items, folk instruments, agricultural tools, 500-year old shadow puppets, ancient stone sculptures and a traditional village replica. There’s also an open-air theatre, an artificial lake with a pedal boating facility and a library.

10.  Lalbagh Botanical Garden

What is it? A pristine, green oasis right in the midst of the city.

Why go? If you want to connect with nature, the Lalbagh Botanical Garden is the place to be. It is dotted with a wide variety of plants from across the globe. The major attraction of the garden, however, is the nineteenth-century glasshouse, built along the lines of London’s Crystal Palace.

11.  Wonderla

What is it? An amusement park worth the drive from the city centre.

Why go? If you’re looking for a day (or more) of family fun, a visit to Wonderla is a must. It has plenty of rides for kids and families, plus high-thrill coasters. There are more than 50 land and water-based rides, along with other attractions, including musical fountains, laser shows and a virtual reality show. If you love the combination of music and rain, don’t miss the Rain Disco – an indoor dance floor with showers of warm water and psychedelic laser lights.

12.  Indian Music Experience

What is it? India's first interactive museum draws its inspiration from Seattle's Museum of Pop Culture.

Why go? Love making music? Then you might want to visit the Indian Music Experience, a one-of-a-kind museum dedicated to the thriving Indian music scene. Stretching four storeys, the museum comprises eight thematic galleries, a sound garden, a café, musical sculptures and a learning centre for music enthusiasts. You can even play instruments, record and create your own music.

13.  Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath

What is it? A fine art gallery and educational institution for budding artists.

Why go? The Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath is a must for lovers of visual art. Opened in 1960, it comprises five galleries and 13 museums, containing an eclectic collection of Indian and international modern, contemporary, traditional, folk and tribal art. Among the exhibits are Mysore-style paintings, Gond tribal paintings, leather puppets of Karnataka and folk paintings of Tamil Nadu. If you have time, you can sign-up for a short-term painting course.

14.  National Gallery of Modern Art

What is it? A treasure trove of modern art in a historic setting.

Why go? You’ll get to enjoy artwork from the eighteenth century to present times, including works by legendary Indian artists like Rabindranath Tagore, Amrita Sher-Gil and Raja Ravi Verma. There are also regular film screenings here and a café.

15.  Cubbon Park

What is it? Nestled in Bangalore’s business district, Cubbon Park is the green lungs of the city.

Why go? With well-cut walkways and pristine natural surroundings, Cubbon Park is the best place to go for jogging, walking and cycling. Also, there are a variety of flowering and ornamental trees, an aquarium and a play area for kids. While you’re here, be sure to check out the city’s two most important buildings surrounding the park – the Attara Kacheri (home of the state’s High Court) and the Vidhana Soudha (the seat of the state legislature of Karnataka).

16.  VV Puram Street Food

What is it? A street food hub renowned for its huge selection of Indian snacks.

Why go? Street food lovers shouldn’t miss this street out. It is dotted with numerous food joints offering everything from south Indian food to north India street delights. The tastiest options include bhajia (fritters), bath masala dosa, jalebi (sweet pretzel) and chaats (savoury snacks).  

17.  Atta Galatta

What is it? A bookstore with a café.

Why go? If you’re a book lover, Atta Galatta is your kind of place. Here, you will find over 10,000 titles in English, Kannada, Bengali and many other languages. In addition to that, book reading sessions, poetry interpretations, book launches and art exhibits are held here regularly (some events are free to attend). To amp your reading experience, there’s a café within the bookstore serving great coffee and munchies.

18.  Bannerghatta National Park

What is it? A sprawling nature park and zoo, home to India’s first butterfly park.

Why go? Covering over 100 square kilometres and home to an incredible array of flora and fauna, the Bannerghatta National Park is a nature-lover’s dream. It features ten forest reserves, a butterfly park, a zoo, a snake park, an aquarium, a children’s park, a museum, a crocodile park, an elephant sanctuary and a safari park. You can explore it all by a guided bus tour or jeep safari.

19.  Nandi Hills

What is it? A detour en-route to the Bangalore airport will lead you to scenic Nandi Hills, an ancient hill fortress.

Why go? If you’re looking to get some Instagram-worthy panoramic views of the city, this is the spot to do it. The journey to the peak is challenging because of the winding roads and sharp bends. But once you reach the summit and see the spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, you’ll know that it was worth it. Aim to be there for sunrise or sunset as the views are unbeatable. Don’t miss the Yoga Nandeeshwara temple, located atop the hill and guarded by the statue of Nandi (the bull); the Bhoga Nandeeshwar temple at the base of Nandi hills; and the Tipu’s Drop, a 600-metre cliff. One side note, a stretch of the route to the summit was closed in late summer 2021 following a landslide, so best to check for the latest updates.

Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka, is another Indian city that's undergoing a change back to its traditional name, Bengaluru. It's a contemporary, fast growing and prosperous city that's home to India's IT industry. Many multinational corporations have set up their Indian head offices there. As a result, the city is full of young professionals and has a vibrant air about it, with a flourishing pub culture.

There's been a huge population growth in Bangalore in recent years. About 12.5 million people now live there, making it India's fourth largest city after Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata. Although Bangalore isn't regarded as a must-visit tourist destination in India, many people like the city because of its greenery and interesting buildings. Unfortunately, some its appeal has been lost to growing traffic congestion and garbage disposal issues though.

Planning Your Trip

• Best Time to Visit: Due to its elevation, Bangalore is blessed with relatively pleasant climate. Daytime temperatures remain fairly constant, between 26-29 degrees Celsius (79-84 degrees Fahrenheit), for most of the year. The temperature usually only exceeds 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) during the hot summer months from March to May, when it can reach around 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit). Winters in Bangalore are warm and sunny, although the temperature does drop at night to around 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit). Winter mornings can also be foggy. September and October experience the most monsoon season rain.
• Language: Kannada and English. Hindi is also widely spoken.
• Currency: Indian rupee.

Getting There

Neighborhoods in Bangalore

Bangalore's Central Business District is situated around M.G. Road, which extends east from Cubbon Park and the imposing neo-Dravidian-style Vidhana Soudha (seat of the Karnataka government). It includes UB City , the city's biggest luxury commercial development project that's become a hot place to shop, dine, and party.

Koramangala in south Bangalore and Indiranagar in east Bangalore are other hip and stylish neighborhoods renowned for their nightlife, restaurants, and pubs.

Malleswaram, in northwest Bangalore, dates back to the 1890s and is one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods. It's a great place to explore on foot, as it has well-maintained sidewalks (a rarity in India!).

Bangalore's main IT hub is located in Whitefield, about 20 kilometers (18.6 miles) east of the city center. However, this rapidly evolving neighborhood has also become an upmarket residential district with gated communities, spacious villas and luxury apartments.

Where to Eat and Drink

If you love beer, you'll love visiting the many brew pubs and sampling craft beers. The Biere Club near UB City is Bangalore's first microbrewery. However, arguably, better beer can be found nearby at Arbor Brewing Company (India's first American-style craft brewery) on Brigade Road in Ashok Nagar, and the Bier Library in Koramangala.

Culture and Customs

Bangalore was founded in 1537 by a local chieftain, who upon being given the land by a Vijaynagar emperor, built a mud fort and temple there. Over the years, the city has undergone a massive transformation. Its earlier days saw it passed from ruler to ruler, until the British Raj took hold of it and located their south Indian administration there in 1831. The British constructed considerable infrastructure. After India gained independence, Bangalore grew into an important center for education, science, and information technology.

Bangalore is a relatively safe Indian city and organized crime is almost non-existent. The city is also quite liberal in its attitude compared to many Indian cities, resulting in better treatment of women and less staring. However, be careful of pickpockets in tourist areas. You may also be approached by men to pose for selfies, which you can refuse if you don't feel comfortable.

The usual tourist scams also operate in Bangalore, but again, to a lesser extent than in many other Indian cities. Overall, Bangalore is a friendly city to visit.

Peak Season  is from October to February, although the weather is pleasant all-year round.

Shoulder Season : Summers ( March to June )  to  are warm, but bearable and the temperature barely ever crosses into the thirties. This is the high season for families with young children on their summer break.

Off-season: Bangalore doesn’t really have an off-season, per se. Monsoons bring persistent showers from July to September, although sporadic, torrential rain is not uncommon throughout the year. Belagavi was originally known as Velugrama or Venugrama as per historical records and it literally meant “bamboo village”. Venu stands for bamboo which is found abundantly in these areas. Belagavi is surrounded by Uttara Kannada and Dharwad in the south, Bagalkote and Gadag in the east, Maharashtra state in the north and Goa state in the west. Belagavi is one of the oldest cities of Karnataka and is the largest in terms of size.

Bangluru Urban

Located 949 m above sea level in South India, Bengaluru is a fast-paced amalgam of the old and new. It is an exciting destination with tantalising sights to take in, mixed with the sensations of a happening cosmopolitan city. Bengaluru is more than just a city; it is a vibrant melange of the past, present and future, a potpourri of experiences unlike any other! With its cosmopolitan nature, Bengaluru welcomes you into its fold.

Bidar, situated in the heart of the Deccan Plateau, has been a melting pot of cultural influences. A region that has seen dramatic changes in the course of its history, it is home to magnificent monuments. Ruled by the Kakatiyas, Tughlaqs, Bahamanis, Barid Shahis, Adil Shahis, Mughals and Nizams at different times, the architecture shows an interesting intermingling of Hindu, Turkish and Persian styles.

Situated in the North Karnataka region, the district of Kalaburagi (formerly called as Gulbarga) forms part of the Deccan Plateau and shares its borders with Maharashtra and Telangana. Among the three districts of the former Hyderabad Karnataka area, it became part of Mysore (Karnataka) after the reorganization of States in 1956. Kalaburagi district is surrounded by Yadgir in the south, Vijayapura and Maharashtra in the west, Bidar in the north and Telangana State in the east.

Vijayapur was a gateway to the Deccan Sultanate which extended from North Karnataka to central India. Located in the historically rich Deccan, the city was established in the 10th-11th centuries by the Kalyani Chalukyas and was ruled by various dynasties including the Adil Shahi kings who have had a major influence on the region. It is dotted with mosques, mausoleums, palaces, fortifications, watchtowers, and strong gateways, with the massive Gol Gumbaz dominating the landscape for miles around.

Yadgiri is one of the smallest districts of Karnataka and it is located in the northeastern part of the state. It is surrounded by Kalaburgi in the north, Raichur in the south, Vijayapura in the west and Telangana state in the east. The major crops include Jowar, Paddy, Cotton, Sunflower, Groundnut and Sugarcane. The area is also renowned for its vast stretch of fertile black soil which is the main reason for bumper harvests especially of red gram, hence the district is also referred to as the “Daal Bowl” of the state.

Situated in the northern part of Karnataka is Bagalkote. Bagalkote is flanked by Vijayapura in the north, Gadag in the south, Raichur towards east, Koppal towards southeast and Belagavi towards the west. The Ghataprabha River, Malaprabha River and Krishna River flow through the district.The legendary Chalukya Dynasty ruled over the place in and around Bagalkote.

Geographically, the district is surrounded by Kalaburagi in the north, Vijayapura and Bagalkote in the west, Koppal and Ballari in the south and Andhra Pradesh State in the east. Raichur is an important commercial, industrial and education centre in North Karnataka.Raichur lies between two important rivers, the Krishna and the Tungabhadra, in the north eastern part of Karnataka state.

Dharwad is located in the north western part of Karnataka. Geographically, This place is surrounded by Gadag in the east, Belagavi in the north, Uttara Kannada in the southwest and Haveri in the south. Dharwad had been a part of many dynasties and kings including the Chalukyas, Bahmani Sultanate, Vijayanagara Empire, Adil Shahis, Mughals, Shivaji Maharaj, Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao, Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan and finally the British East India Company.

Gadag district was formed in 1997 when it was carved out from Dharwad district. Gadag is surrounded by Haveri in the south, Dharwad in the west, Belagavi in the north west, Bagalkote in the north, Koppal in the east and Ballari in the south east.

Vijayanagara

The newest and the 31st District in Karnataka state carved out of Ballari District in 2020 is located in the Kalyana Karnataka Region with Hosapete as district headquarters. It is the home of the former capital of the famous Vijayanagara Empire and its capital Hampi, which is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Koppal is a fairly new district of Karnataka which has been carved out of Raichur district. It is surrounded by Raichur in the east, Gadag in the West, Bagalkot in the north, Ballari in the south.The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi also covers some areas of Koppal district including Anegundi, which is home to the mythical kingdom of Kishkinda of Ramayana fame.The old palace and fort still exist here and is the location for the annual “Anegundi Utsava”.

Ballari is situated on the eastern side of Karnataka and is surrounded by Raichur and Koppal on the north, Haveri and Gadag on the west, Chitradurga and Davanagere on the south, and Anantapur and Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh) on the east. Ballari has been a meeting place for people from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh hence offering a tradition and culture mix of both the states.

Uttara Kannada

Uttara Kannada District is one of the largest districts in Karnataka with abundant natural resources and varied geographical features. It is surrounded by Belagavi and Goa State to the North, Dharward in the East, Shivamogga and Udupi in the South. Kannada & Konkani are the 2 major regional languages spoken here. With a total land area of 10.25 lakh hectares, 8.28 hectares is under forest land.

Haveri district is almost in the centre of Karnataka with equal distance from Bidar in the far north to Kollegal in the far south. It is surrounded by Dharwad and Gadag in the north, Ballari and Davanagere in the east, Shivamogga in the south and Uttara Kannada in the west. Haveri is well known for its rich culture and heritage and is considered as the gateway to North Karnataka.Haveri is the birthplace of several prominent personalities such as Santa Shishunala Sharif, Kanaka Dasa and Sarvajna.

Shivamogga district is a part of the Malnad region of Karnataka. This landlocked district is surrounded by Haveri, Davanagere, Chikkmagaluru, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts and is located 300 km north-west of Bengaluru. Nestled cosily as a Gateway to the Western Ghats, the Shivamogga region is a lush green landscape well-endowed with forests, sparkling water bodies, spectacular waterfalls and green peaks rising to the skies.

The name “Udupi” is believed to have come from the Sanskrit words “Udu & Pa” that means “stars” and “Lord“. According to legend, the Moon’s light was once reduced due to a curse by King Daksha. The Moon prayed to Lord Shiva to get back the original shine and the prayer was believed to be made at the Chandramouleshwara Temple here.

Chikkamagaluru

Chikkamagaluru is a peaceful, beautiful town with hills, valleys, streams and coffee plantations. It is believed that Chikkamagaluru was given as a dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, the Chief of Sakrepatna kingdom. Chikkamagaluru has taken its name from Chikka magal-uru which means “Younger Daughter’s Village“.

Dakshina Kannada

Ensconced on the southern coast, this maritime city makes a pleasant and convenient stop between Kerala and Karwar. It’s the gateway to the Konkan coast and inland Kodagu region. The district is bound by sea in the west and Western Ghats in the East, Udupi district in the North and Kerala State in the South. Mangaluru is the district headquarters of Dakshina Kannada and it has been synonymous with banking and education.

Surrounded by Dakshina Kannada in the west, Chikkamagaluru and Chitradurga in the north, Coorg towards the south and Tumkuru in the east, Hassan has an eventful and rich history. It is blessed with a pleasant climate and a great picturesque location. It is here where the plains (maidaans) begin to gently slope into the Western Ghats (malnad).Although not a proper hill station, Hassan is often referred to as Poor Man’s Ooty.

Located around 65 km from Bengaluru, Tumakuru is the second-largest district in the state of Karnataka. Tumakuru district shares its border with eight districts, which is the highest in the state; Chitradurga towards the north, Hassan and Chikkamagaluru towards west, Mandya towards the south-west, Ramanagara and Bengaluru Rural towards the south, Chikkaballapura towards east and Ananthapuram (Andhra Pradesh) towards north-east.

Bangalore Rural

Bengaluru Rural is surrounded by Bengaluru Urban in the south, Tumkuru and Chikkaballapur in the north, Kolar in the east and Ramnagara in the west. Bengaluru Rural District was formed in 1986 when Bengaluru was split into Bangalore (Rural) and Bangalore (Urban). Again, it was spilt in 2007, when the talukas of Kanakapura, Ramanagar, Magadi and Channapatna merged to the newly formed Ramanagara district.

Chikkaballapur

Chikkaballapur district is a newly created district in the state of Karnataka. Chikkaballapur was formed in 2007 when it was carved out of the existing Kolar district. The district is surrounded by Kolar in the southwest, Bengaluru Rural in the south, Tumkuru in the west and Andhra Pradesh state in the north. Chikkaballapur is located around 60 km from Bengaluru city and due to this proximity, attractions in Chikkaballapur is a favourite weekend getaway for the Bengaluru crowd.

In 1997, Davanagere district was carved out of 3 districts of Chitradurga, Shivamogga and Ballari and derives its name from Devanagari which gradually became Davanagere. It is surrounded by Ballari in the north, Shivamogga and Haveri in the west, Chikkamagaluru in the south and Chitradurga in the east.

Chitradurga

Chitradurga offers visitors an irresistible mix of history, legends and spirituality. Chitradurga offers visitors a spectacular boulder-strewn landscape which has an unconquerable fort with astounding defenses, ancient temples and a history full of valour and bravery.It is believed that the name of the place earlier was ‘Chatrakaldurg ‘, the word ‘Chatrakal’ meaning umbrella rock, being derived from a striking umbrella-shaped hill in the south-western part of the town.

Nestled on the slopes of the Western Ghats, Coorg (also called Kodagu) woos you with its undulating hills, lush green forests and a spectacular landscape dotted with coffee plantations and orange groves. Coorg is the land of coffee, cardamom, colonels, and the Cauvery. Aptly dubbed as ‘the Scotland of India’, Coorg offers a spellbinding visual treat with its cloud-capped peaks, chirpy birds and sparkling streams, not to mention the unique, mouth-watering flavours of Kodagu cuisine.

It was, in ancient inscriptions, known as Kuvalala, Kolala and Kolahalapura. Historical evidence says that Kolar was in existence from the 4th Century onwards. The Ganga dynasty originally hailed from this place which was the initial capital. Moreover, Kolar was also part of many other dynasties including Cholas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagara. Moreover, it also has mentioned in the Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Geographically, Mandya is surrounded by Tumkuru in the north, Ramanagara in the east, Chamrajanagara and Mysuru in the south and Hassan in the west. Mandya is also known as the land of five rivers due to the presence of the rivers Cauvery, Hemavathi, Shimsha, Veeravaishnavi and Lokapavani.

Ramanagara was called Closepet during pre-independence times, named so after Sir Barry Close who built the old bridge here. Ramanagara district was carved out of the erstwhile Bengaluru Rural district in 2007. The district is surrounded by Bangalore Urban and Tumakuru in the north, Mandya in the west, Chamarajanagar in the south and Tamil Nadu state in the west. Cauvery, Arkavathi & Kanva are the three rivers flowing in the District.

Mysuru, the ‘City of Palaces’, is royalty and magnificence embodied; overflowing with history, sprawling gardens and tree-lined boulevards. One of South India’s most fascinating cities, Mysuru has a plethora of places to visit and explore. Ruled over by the Wadiyars from 1399 till Independence, Mysuru is renowned for its royal heritage and splendid monuments and buildings. This former state capital is a seamless blend of old-world charm and modernity.

Chamrajnagar

Being the southernmost district of Karnataka, Chamarajanagar district shares its borders with the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Chamarajanagar was earlier known as Arikutara, which was changed by Krishnaraja Wadiyar III in memory of his father Chamaraja Wadiyar who was born at this place and also constructed the Chamarajeshwara Temple, a monument of considerable beauty.

Lal Bagh Botanical Gardens

Bangalore Palace

One of the finest places to visit in Bangalore, the Bangalore Palace was predominantly built by Chamaraja Wodeyar in the year 1887.

Many dwellers of the city also believe that the design of the palace has been inspired by the Windsor Castle of England.

Comprised of Tudor-style architecture, towers and fortified arches, this place also harbours wooden carvings in its interior. From Cubbon Park, a well-maintained 120-hectare garden in the heart of the city, to the world-class National Gallery of Modern Art and atmospheric temples, here are the best things to do in Bangalore.

#1 Chill out at Cubbon Park

A welcome green space in the heart of the city, shaded by massive clumps of bamboo, Cubbon Park is entered from the western end of MG Road, presided over by a statue of Queen Victoria.

Several prominent historic landmarks are located within its sprawling expanse, including the State Central Library, one of the oldest and largest in the country, housed in the impressive red Sheshadri Iyer Memorial Hall, and the colonnaded, red-brick High Court of Karnataka (Attara Kacheri), while the famous Chinnaswamy cricket stadium and domed St Mark’s Cathedral sit nearby.

#2 Delve into the prehistoric artefacts of the Government Museum

The poorly labelled and maintained Government Museum features prehistoric artefacts, Vijayanagar, Hoysala and Chalukya sculptures, musical instruments, paintings and Deccani and Rajasthani miniatures.

It includes the adjacent Venkatappa Art Gallery, which exhibits twentieth-century landscapes, portraits, abstract art, wood sculpture and occasional temporary art shows.

#3 Visit Vidhana Soudha, India’s largest civic structure

Built in 1956, Bengaluru’s vast State Secretariat, Vidhana Soudha, is the largest civic structure of its kind in the country.

Kengal Hanumanthaiah, chief minister at the time, wanted a “people’s palace” that, following the transfer of power from the royal Wadiyar dynasty to a legislature, would “reflect the power and dignity of the people”. In theory its design is entirely Indian, but its overall effect is not unlike the bombastic colonial architecture built in the so-called Indo-Saracenic style.

#4 Wander the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens

Inspired by the splendid gardens of the Mughals and the French botanical gardens at Puducherry in Tamil Nadu, Sultan Haider Ali set to work in 1760 laying out the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens, 4km south of the centre.

Originally covering forty acres, just beyond his fort – where one of Kempe Gowda’s original watchtowers can still be seen – the gardens were expanded under Ali’s son Tipu, who introduced numerous exotic species of plants, and today they house an extensive horticultural seedling centre.

The British brought in gardeners from Kew in 1856 and built a military bandstand and a glasshouse, based on London’s Crystal Palace, which hosts wonderful flower shows. Now spreading over 240 acres, the gardens are pleasant to visit during the day, but tend to attract unsavoury characters after around 6pm.

Great sunsets and city views can be had from the central hill, which is topped by a small shrine.

#5 Check out Tipu’s Summer Palace

Just southwest of the crowded City Market (aka KR Market), near the fairytale like Jama Masjid – whitewashed and rambling and still in regular use – lies Tipu’s Summer Palace, a two-storey, mostly wooden structure built in 1791.

Similar in style to the Daria Daulat Bagh at Srirangapatna, the palace is in a far worse state, with most of its painted decoration destroyed.

Next door, the Kote Venkataramana Swamy Temple, dating from the early eighteenth century, was built by the Wadiyar rajas.

#6 Be wowed by the Bull Temple

Lying 6 km south of the Kempegowda Bus Station, in the Basavanagudi area, Kempe Gowda’s sixteenth-century Bull Temple houses a massive monolithic Nandi bull, its grey granite made black by the application of charcoal and oil.

The temple is approached along a path lined with mendicants and snake charmers; inside, for a small donation, the priest will offer you a string of fragrant jasmine flowers.

Don’t miss the Dodda Ganesha Temple, featuring a mammoth monolith of Ganesha, 5.5m tall and 5m wide, below the Bull Temple.

#7 See the gold-plated dome of Sri Radha Krishna Mandir

Some 8 km north of the centre lies ISKCON’s (International Society of Krishna Consciousness) gleaming temple, a hybrid of ultramodern glass and vernacular south Indian architecture.

Also known as Sri Radha Krishna Mandir, it’s a huge, lavish showpiece crowned by a gold-plated dome.

Barriers guide visitors on a one-way journey through the well-organised complex to the inner sanctum, an octagonal hall resplendent with colourfully painted ceilings and golden images of the god Krishna and his consort Radha.

Collection points throughout and inescapable merchandising on the way out are evidence of the organisation’s highly successful commercialisation.

#8 National Gallery of Modern Art

Set in a former Wadiyar mansion, the beautifully designed and laid out National Gallery of Modern Art (one of three in India – the others are in Delhi and Mumbai) is a fabulous repository of 17,000 paintings, sculptures and graphic prints capturing Indian art from the early eighteenth century to present times.

While Bangalore's traffic can be challenging, there are multiple transportation options available to help you get around the city. From utilising the metro or ride-hailing services, here’s how to do it.

Bengaluru’s extensive bus system radiates from the Kempegowda Bus Station near City railway station. Most buses from platform 17 travel past MG Rd.

Along with regular buses, BMTC also operates a deluxe express service, Pushpak, on a number of set routes as well as a handful of night buses.

Other important city bus stands include the City Market Bus Stand at Kalasipalayam near the railway station, and Shivaji Nagar to the northeast of Cubbon Park.

In June 2017, the first phase of Bengaluru’s Namma Metro was completed. The east– west Purple Line links the main train and bus stations (via City Railway and Majestic stations) with points east including Cubbon Park, MG Road and Indiranagar.

The north–south Green Line travels south via Yeshwantpur before intersecting with the Purple Line at Majestic and continuing south via Chikpete, KR Market and Lalbagh.

Payment is by single-use tokens or Varshik smart cards, which give a slight discount.

By auto-rickshaw

The easiest way of getting around is by metered auto-rickshaw, which can now even be summoned by app (mgaadi.com).

Most meters do work and drivers are usually willing to use them, although you will occasionally be asked for a flat fare, especially during rush hour.

You can book chauffeur-driven cars and taxis through several agencies including EZI Drive or Carzonrent or use Ola or Uber.

The best time to visit Bangalore is winter (October to February). Due to its elevation, Bangalore enjoys a moderate climate throughout the year, but these months offer cooler temperatures and lower humidity, creating a more pleasant environment for exploring.

With the busiest airport in south India, some travellers will fly into Bangalore but most arrive by train.

Bengaluru International Airport is 35 km northeast of the city in Devanahalli. It’s the busiest in south India and the most spacious in the country, with top-notch facilities.

Until the much-discussed high-speed rail link is up and running, you can get into the city by Meru Airport Taxi or efficient a/c Vayu Vajra bus.

Bangalore is well connected by train to all parts of India. Bangalore City railway station is west of the centre, near Kempe Gowda Circle, opposite the main bus stands; for the north of the city, it’s better to board or disembark at Bangalore Cantonment station north of the centre.

Bangalore City has prepaid auto-rickshaw and taxi booths in the forecourt, and is connected (via Majestic station) to MG Road and points east in the city by Namma Metro’s Purple Line.

Long-distance government buses, including those from other states like Goa and Maharashtra, arrive at the busy Central Bus Stand, opposite the railway station.

There is a comprehensive timetable in English in the centre of the Central Bus Stand concourse. Most services can be booked in advance at the computerised counters near Bay 13.

By private buses

Tickets for the numerous private bus companies can be bought from the agencies on Tank Bund Rd, on the opposite side of the bus stand from the train station.
