United’s Basic Economy option is great for cost-conscious flyers, but the lower ticket cost means you’re subject to more restrictions around upgrades, baggage allowances, and seating. However, there are some ways you can get around these restrictions.

Read on to find out the specifics of Basic Economy on United Airlines and how you can make this no-frills fare class more comfortable when flying with different strategies and some of the best travel credit cards from United.

What is Basic Economy on United Airlines?

Personal items, carry-ons, and checked bags, seat assignments, flight changes and cancellations, mileageplus points and benefits, how to make basic economy more convenient, bottom line.

United's Basic Economy tickets provide a lower-priced fare compared to other Economy options, but you’ll receive many of the same amenities and services, such as inflight entertainment, food and beverages, and United WiFi.

However, you’ll likely experience limitations in other areas. Here are some details of Basic Economy’s rules and restrictions:

Baggage rules for transatlantic flights are the same as standard Economy tickets — you’re allowed one full-sized carry-on bag, plus a personal item at no additional cost. However, for all other flight routes, you won’t be allowed to bring a full-sized carry-on bag.

You can bring a small personal item (no larger than 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches) that will fit under your seat — think a purse, laptop bag, or shoulder bag. Anything larger must be checked and is subject to a checked-bag fee (typically $30 for the first bag). You’ll be charged an additional baggage fee of $25 if you bring a larger piece of carry-on baggage to the gate and check it there.

Checked bags for Basic Economy flights are subject to the same policies as standard Economy tickets — except for transatlantic flights, where you have to pay for your first checked bag.

You can check in for your flight online or through the United Airlines app if you indicate you’re checking a bag and pay ahead. Otherwise, if you’re only taking a personal item, you must check in for your flight at the airport.

When booking a flight, Basic Economy passengers will have their seats automatically assigned and won’t be able to change them afterward. However, you can purchase seat assignments for an extra fee and choose where you’d like to sit (let's face it, nobody wants the middle seat) — but you can’t purchase Economy Plus benefits or seats, plus you can’t use any United mileage upgrades .

In addition, those who are in a group with travel companions can’t sit together unless there are seats available and you purchase advance seat assignments. You’ll also be in the last boarding group, though there are some exceptions (more on that below).

Once booked, you won’t be able to make any changes to your flight, including same-day or advanced changes. You also won’t be eligible for refunds unless they fall within the rules of United’s 24-hour flexible booking policy, which states that you may qualify for a refund if you cancel within 24 hours of your purchase, as long as your original departure flight is a week or longer in advance.

If you are a United MileagePlus member, you can still earn award miles for your Basic Economy ticket. Unfortunately, you’ll be restricted in how much you’ll earn — you’ll get only 50% Premier qualifying miles and 0.5 Premier qualifying segments toward MileagePlus Premier status, which gives you additional benefits. You also won’t receive additional benefits, such as mileage or paid seat upgrades.

Flying with Basic Economy can save you some cash, but it’s probably not going to provide you the best flying experience. The good news is that you can make flying with Basic Economy more comfortable.

Here are a few ways to get around some of the Basic Economy restrictions:

1. Become a MileagePlus Premier member

United MileagePlus Premier members can get one carry-on bag for free and priority boarding, according to membership tier.

Here are the four MileagePlus Premier tiers and what it takes to qualify:

  • Premier Silver: Reach 25,000 PQM (Premier qualifying miles) or 30 PQS (Premier qualifying segments), plus spend $3,000
  • Premier Gold: Reach 50,000 PQM or 60 PQS, plus spend $6,000
  • Premier Platinum: Reach 75,000 PQM or 90 PQS, plus spend $9,000
  • Premier 1K: 100,000 PQM or 120 PQS, plus spend $15,000

In addition, you need to fly at least four paid flights or flight segments operated by United within a calendar year.

2. Become a Star Alliance Gold member

Like MileagePlus Premier members, Star Alliance Gold members will also be able to bring on a carry-on bag and earn priority boarding. However, Star Alliance Gold members won’t be eligible for paid or mileage upgrades, just like MileagePlus members.

To reach Star Alliance Gold status, you'll need to reach the MileagePlus Premier 1K, Premier Platinum, and Premier Gold tier. You could also reach Gold Star status by reaching certain frequent-flyer statuses within the Star Alliance network. For specifics, check the Star Alliance website .

3. Get a United Airlines credit card

Using a United credit card to purchase a Basic Economy ticket may help you get around some restrictions, particularly with checked bags and boarding. Certain credit cards have different perks, and there are both business cards and personal cards available. So check the table below to compare features and choose the best airline credit card for you:

What is the difference between Basic Economy and Economy on United Airlines?

When flying United, you’ll receive the same in-flight service whether you choose a Basic Economy or a regular Economy fare. The difference, however, is that Basic Economy travelers will be subject to certain restrictions. These include no group seating, no advanced seat selection (without a fee), only one personal item can be brought onboard, and no full-size carry-ons are allowed. Basic Economy travelers are also the last group to board, cannot make flight changes or get refunds (outside of United’s 24-hour flexible booking policy), and do not earn Premier qualifying points on their flight(s).

How can I tell if my United ticket is Basic Economy?

United Basic Economy tickets will be notated upon booking, and are marked as the “most restrictive” fare. Most often, these tickets are fare class N. If you are opting for a mobile check-in, you’ll also find that your Basic Economy boarding pass is orange, versus the typical blue.

Can United Basic Economy check in online?

If you are checking a bag with a United Basic Economy fare, you’ll be able to check in online at United.com or through the United mobile app only if you are planning to check a bag. If you are not checking a bag, you’ll need to complete your check-in in-person at the airport kiosks or with an agent at the airport counter.

Can United Basic Economy tickets be upgraded?

Yes, customers traveling on a United Basic Economy ticket can upgrade to Economy Plus — which includes extra legroom and a seat close to the front of the cabin — but you can only do this at check-in.

Although United Airlines Basic Economy fares are more restrictive than other fare classes, there are ways to get around some of the rules. If you have elite status or book a flight using a co-branded United Airlines credit card , you can get perks like carry-on bags and priority boarding.

Keep in mind that some Basic Economy rules will still apply, even if you qualify for one of the workarounds above. For example, you likely won’t be eligible for complimentary upgrades or be able to easily make changes to your reservation once it’s booked.

Basic economy fares on United Airlines are a great way to save money if you don’t mind giving up the perks that you get with main cabin economy fares, like free seat selection, a carry-on bag and no-fee flight changes.

But what if you book a basic economy fare, then later realize you made a mistake and that you should have paid more for a main cabin fare so you could carry on a bag, sit with your family, change your travel dates or enjoy some of the benefits of your United elite status.

Historically, you’ve had the option of paying separate fees for a few of these perks, like seat selection. But now, you have another option: For flights within the U.S. and short-haul flights to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America, you can pay a single fee, which varies based on the flight details, to switch a basic economy ticket to regular economy.

Here’s how to add United economy benefits to upgrade and switch your basic economy fare.

First, know what you're getting in basic economy

If you’re thinking of converting your basic economy ticket to regular economy, start by reviewing the terms of your current booking. Here’s what you get with a basic economy fare on United:

One personal item: Passengers flying a United basic economy fare can carry onboard one item, like a purse or laptop case, that’s no bigger than 9 inches by 10 inches by 17 inches and that fits under the seat in front of you.

No full-size carry-on for flights within the U.S.: For domestic flights, you can’t bring a full-size carry-on bag on your basic economy trip unless you’re a MileagePlus Premier member, a companion traveling on the same reservation with a MileagePlus Premier member, the primary cardmember of a qualifying United Airlines credit card or a Star Alliance Gold member. (Transatlantic, transpacific and passengers to El Salvador, Panama and South America with basic economy tickets get one carry-on bag).

No seat selection: You don’t get to choose your seat on most routes; instead, the airline assigns you a seat before boarding. You have the option of paying extra to choose your seat before it’s assigned, or you can purchase Economy Plus seating at check-in. Prices vary.

No group or family seating: You can’t book seats together unless you purchase seat selection in advance.

No flight changes or refunds: Ticket changes aren’t allowed, except in the case of same-day standby, nor are refunds (except within United’s 24-hour flexible booking policy).

Restrictions to MileagePlus and Premier member benefits: Basic economy flights don’t count toward elite members’ Premier qualifying flights.

Last to board: Unless you’re a MileagePlus Premier member or a companion traveling on the same reservation with a Premier member, the primary cardmember of a qualifying MileagePlus credit card or a Star Alliance Gold member, basic economy fares are the last to board.

Know what you could get by adding economy benefits

If the terms of basic economy no longer work well for your trip, consider whether it would be worthwhile to pay to add United economy benefits on qualifying flights. Here are the bundled benefits you get with the United switch to economy feature.

The option to change or cancel your flight without paying an additional fee.

The ability to bring a full-size carry-on.

Complimentary seat assignment before check-in.

The ability to upgrade further to Economy Plus or a premium cabin seat.

Certain perks  associated with  your Premier status, like complimentary access to Economy Plus and preferred seating, complimentary Premier upgrades, and the option to upgrade using PlusPoints.

Compare the cost of bundling vs. adding perks a la carte

Ask yourself which main cabin economy perks you need and consider whether you should buy them a la carte.

For example, if all that you want is the chance to choose your seat, you may be able to buy that separately. Log in to the United website and go to the “Trip details” page, or log in to the app and select “Reservation details.” Look at the seating chart for your flight to see if you’re offered the option to pick your seat in main cabin for an added fee. Compare that with the offered price for changing your basic economy ticket to main cabin economy with the United switch to economy option.

If the a la carte option can meet your needs more cheaply, that’s the way to go.

For example, adding the option to choose your seat on your basic economy trip may cost $30 or more per direction of travel depending on your flight, as you can see in this recently searched flight from Houston to Atlanta.

basic economy travel credit united

If seat selection is all you need, then compare the cost with upgrading to economy price (remember to double the seat selection fee if it’s round trip) and go with whichever is cheaper.

The exact price of these upgrades depends on your route, and the cost will be charged per passenger per direction of travel. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to see the price until after booking a basic economy fare.

How to make the switch

The option to add United economy benefits, if available, will show up after you’ve booked your basic economy flight. You can find it either on the “Trip details” page at united.com or under “Reservation details” in the United mobile app.

You’ll be able to upgrade for one or both directions of travel, but you must add United economy benefits for every person on the reservation.

Why switching to economy could make sense

If you bought a basic economy ticket, switching to economy could make sense for a number of reasons.

More flexibility

If you need to reschedule or cancel your flight, you can purchase the economy upgrade instead of buying a whole new ticket as you’d have to with a basic economy fare.

Better perks for MileagePlus Premier members

If you have Premier status in the United MileagePlus loyalty program, switching to economy means you can enjoy status perks like seat upgrades and the ability to earn premier qualifying points — neither of which are an option when you fly basic economy. But the number of miles and Premier qualifying points you earn will be based on your original basic economy fare.

Switching to economy might also save you some cash compared with adding on a la carte upgrades individually.

Final thoughts on adding benefits to a Basic Economy ticket

Upgrading to United Economy will likely be most beneficial for travelers who need to cancel or change a flight because it will likely be much cheaper than purchasing a whole new flight (thus bearing the cost of the original). This new option is also a plus for anyone who books basic economy, then later realizes they need some of the perks of main cabin economy — like the option to sit with family members or earn Premier qualifying flights.

Long security lines, surprise delays, cramped airplane bathrooms, ever-shrinking seats, bad food…In many ways, flying is a lot less glamorous than it used to be. Add basic economy to the mix, and the experience can be downright lousy. That’s particularly true if you fly United Airlines, whose basic-economy policies have the unfortunate distinction of being some of the strictest in the industry.

Whether you’re ready to return to the skies now or you’re cautiously planning a future trip, here’s what you need to know about United’s basic economy fare — so you can decide whether the potential cost savings are worth the trade-offs.

What is United basic economy?

United was the second of the “Big Three” U.S. airlines (after Delta and before American ) to introduce basic economy, in part to better compete with ultra-low-cost carriers like Spirit, Frontier and Allegiant. Designed for what the airline calls “price-sensitive” customers, basic economy is United’s stripped-down, cheapest fare class. While basic-economy flyers sit in the same cabin and have access to most of the same in-flight amenities — including food and beverage service, Wi-Fi and entertainment — as standard United economy passengers, that’s where the similarities end.

As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. And in most cases, purchasing a United basic-economy ticket lets you board the aircraft with just one small personal item (such as a purse or laptop bag) in tow. Mobility aids, including collapsible wheelchairs and other assistive medical devices, are also permitted. Everything else, from sitting next to a travel companion to bringing a full-size carry-on bag, comes at a price — either what you’ll have to pay in fees, or what you’ll have to sacrifice in terms of convenience and comfort.

What can you expect with basic economy?

If you typically fly in another fare class, there are a few things you should know about basic economy before you book.

Checked-bag policy

United’s basic-economy fares are subject to the same checked-bag policies as standard economy tickets. Baggage fees vary by destination, but generally speaking, they start at $30 for your first bag, $40 for your second bag and $150 for each additional bag.

Not all United flyers have to shell out for bag fees, though, regardless of their fare class. Exceptions apply to active-duty U.S. military personnel and their dependents, MileagePlus Premier members, Star Alliance Gold members and people who hold certain co-branded  United credit cards (one of which we rank among the best airline rewards credit cards available right now). If you fall into any of these groups, you can fly basic economy without worrying about getting nickel-and-dimed for checking a bag.

Carry-on policy

United’s carry-on policy for basic economy is one of the most significant downsides to flying in this fare class. In most cases, you’re allowed to bring only one small personal item that can fit under the seat in front of you. (That’s right, no overhead-bin access for you.) Anything larger than 9 x 10 x 17 inches will have to be checked (for a fee) at the ticket counter. And if you try to circumvent the rule and bring your full-size carry-on to the gate, you’ll be forced to pay a $25 gate-handling charge in addition to the checked-bag fee.

However, you can sidestep this rule and bring both a carry-on and personal item if:

  • You’re on a trans-Atlantic flight operated by United or United Express.
  • You have elite status in United’s MileagePlus loyalty program .
  • You’re a Star Alliance Gold member.
  • You’re the primary cardholder on a qualifying United credit card, such as the United Club Infinite Card , or  the United Business Card (and you use it to pay for your flight).

Seat selection

Avoiding the dreaded middle seat is practically impossible when you fly basic economy — unless, of course, you’re willing to pay for an advance seat assignment, which “may be available for purchase during booking and up until check-in opens,” per the airline . Otherwise, your seat is automatically assigned at check-in, which you can’t do online ahead of time unless you’re checking a bag or taking a trans-Atlantic flight.

Frustratingly, even basic-economy flyers with MileagePlus elite status won’t have the option to upgrade to Economy Plus seating, use their Economy Plus subscription, or cash in any free, earned or mileage upgrades.

Boarding time

Don’t count on being one of the first people to get to their seats when you’re in basic economy. Only MileagePlus Premier members, Star Alliance Gold members and qualifying United card holders can escape the clutches of the very last boarding group.

Change and cancellation policies

Do you have a family emergency? Did you wake up sick the morning of your trip? Regardless of the reason, you’re out of luck if you need to modify your United itinerary. Neither advance nor same-day flight changes are available with basic economy, even for a fee.

And if you need to skip your flight altogether, you can forget about getting a refund unless you cancel within 24 hours of booking and your ticket was purchased at least one week prior to departure.

(Due to the coronavirus pandemic, certain exceptions to these policies apply.  Visit the airline’s website to learn how you can change or cancel your United flight at no extra charge.)

Why consider basic economy fares?

Despite their limitations, basic-economy fares might make sense for you if:

  • You want to save the most money possible.
  • You’re flying solo, so the ability to sit with a travel companion isn’t a factor.
  • The flight itself is short, and you won’t mind sitting in the middle seat for the duration.
  • You’re traveling to and from your destination on the same day (perhaps for a quick business trip), so you don’t need to check a bag or even bring a full-size carry-on.

Further, having the right United credit card (and using it to purchase your fare) can help alleviate some of the pain points of basic economy. For instance, the United Explorer Card, United Infinite Card, and  United Business Card all come with priority boarding and at least one free checked bag for the primary cardholder. They also let you utilize that precious overhead-bin space with a full-size carry-on bag — score!

That said, MileagePlus members should note that while basic-economy tickets still earn United award miles — as well as Premier Qualifying Points and lifetime miles — they’re not eligible for Premier Qualifying Flights, and they earn just 50% Premier Qualifying Miles and 0.5 Premier Qualifying Segments toward elite status.

Is basic economy worth it?

Let’s be honest: Basic economy isn’t exactly the most luxurious way to fly. Depending on the circumstances, though, it can be an easy way to save a chunk of money, especially if you parlay those savings into future travel.

To decide whether basic economy is worth it, crunch the numbers before you book. If the ticket is $40 cheaper than a standard economy seat, but you’ll need to check a bag for $30, the $10 difference is negligible. But if you usually pack light and eschew paying baggage fees — or if you have elite status and the worst parts of basic economy don’t apply to you anyway — it might be a deal worth considering.

United Airlines Basic Economy vs Economy (Key Differences) [2023]

Are you thinking about saving a little bit of money by flying Basic Economy on United Airlines?

If so, you’re probably curious about the differences between United Basic Economy and regular (or standard) economy.

In this article, we’ll take a deep dive at all of the big (and small) differences so that you know exactly what to expect before flying on Basic Economy.

I’ll also analyze the price differences and give you some insight into whether or not it’s worth it to fly United Basic Economy.

Tip: Use the free app WalletFlo to help you travel the world for free by finding the best travel credit cards and promotions!

Table of Contents

Booking United Airlines Basic Economy

Booking a United Airlines Basic Economy fare will be the same process as booking a ticket for standard economy.

If there is a United Airlines Basic Economy fare available, you’ll clearly see it when selecting your fare during booking.

Also, the differences between economy and Basic Economy will be made very clear to you as you go through the booking process.

Multiple windows will appear showing you the difference between the two so that you don’t make an uninformed decision.

But even with all of those prompts, there still are quite a few nuances that you want to be aware of and I’ll go into those below.

basic economy travel credit united

Full-sized carry-on bags

The biggest difference between economy and Basic Economy that most people are probably familiar with is the carry-on baggage policy.

Basic economy fares do not allow you to bring on a free carry-on bag on all routes.

However, some routes will allow you to bring a free carry-on item and those include:

  • Trans-Pacific flights to and from the US
  • Trans-Atlantic flights to and from the US (flights to Europe, Africa and the Middle East)
  • Flights to and from Mexico and Central America, and South America.

Also, if you have a certain type of membership you might still be able to bring a carry-on even with the Basic Economy ticket.

These memberships include if you are a:

  • MileagePlus Premier member or companion traveling on the same reservation
  • Primary cardmember of a qualifying MileagePlus credit card or
  • Star Alliance Gold member.

If you are not allowed a carry-on bag but bring one anyways you will be required to pay the applicable checked baggage fee. In addition to that, you will likely be charged a $25 gate handling fee.

basic economy travel credit united

Personal item

Just like standard economy passengers, United Basic Economy passengers are still allowed to bring a personal item .

A personal item is basically a smaller carry-on which could be something like a small backpack, purse, laptop, etc.

The dimensions allowed for your personal item are: 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm) or less. In my experience, if the object can easily fit under your seat it should not be a problem.

Mobility aids, assistive devices and medical devices including breast pumps are also permitted.

Seat selection

Economy passengers are allowed to select their seat at the time of booking. During that time, you’ll be shown a seat map of the plane and you can select any open seat or choose to pay more for an Economy Plus seat.

However, if you book a Basic Economy ticket, your seat will automatically be assigned prior to boarding (at check-in) and you cannot change it once you have been assigned to it.

In some cases when booking a Basic Economy ticket it will be possible to purchase advance seat assignments during booking and up until check-in opens.

This can be done after you input your personal information during booking and prices will differ based on your route and where in the cabin you are selecting a seat.

For a standard seat in economy, the price for seat selection may range from $10 to $20.

As you’ll see below, sometimes the price difference between economy and Basic Economy is not that great so selecting your seats could be more expensive than just booking economy.

Note: MileagePlus members, including MileagePlus Premier members, will not earn PQP or other accruals toward Premier status for purchasing a standard Economy seat assignment

If you want to purchase Economy Plus tickets, that will only be available at the time of check-in.

Elite benefits and upgrades

Also, MileagePlus Premier members won’t be eligible for complimentary Economy Plus seating. That’s actually a pretty major drawback because Economy Plus upgrades for elite members are extremely common to get.

Note: MileagePlus members, including Premier members, cannot use complimentary, earned or mileage upgrades, or Economy Plus subscription benefits.

When it comes to selecting your seats, a major factor to keep in mind is that customers traveling in groups (including families) will not be placed in seats together.

The only way to ensure that you’ll be seated by each other is if you book advanced seat assignments.

Unaccompanied minors

Seat assignments can be made for unaccompanied minors flying on United .

If you are dealing with an unaccompanied minor on a Basic Economy ticket, call the  United Customer Contact Center  after you finish your booking and pay the unaccompanied minor fee.

Passengers with disabilities

Passengers with disabilities can be accommodated when purchasing a Basic Economy ticket. You just need to make sure that you make a request at least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled flight.

United Airlines has a pretty straightforward boarding process . If you booked an economy ticket you’ll be boarding somewhere between groups 3 through 5, unless some special status applies.

However, if you have a Basic Economy ticket you will be the last to board the plane in group 5.

Normally, that would cause issues for finding overhead storage bin space for your carry-on bag. However, in this case you won’t have a carry-on bag so it is much less of an issue.

There is a very high chance you’ll be given a middle seat so be prepared for that.

Something to be aware of is that if you are a United Basic Economy passenger, you can still retain your priority boarding if you are a:

  • The primary cardmember of a qualifying MileagePlus credit card or
  • A Star Alliance Gold member.

Checked baggage

For the most part, the checked baggage policies for United Basic Economy and regular economy are the same. However, things might be slightly different on international flights.

That is because for Basic Economy fares on trans-Atlantic flights, you’ll have to pay for your first checked bag.

Refunds and changes

There is no change fee for most United standard economy tickets. The only out-of-pocket expense you would have when changing a standard economy ticket would be if the fare is more expensive.

However, things are much different for United Basic Economy. In order to make a change you would have to add economy benefits (which I talk about below).

Basic Economy tickets are not eligible for changes, but are eligible for a full refund inside 24 hours of booking as long as you completed your purchase one week or more before the original scheduled departure flight.

Also, if you cancel a United Basic Economy ticket, you will not get a travel credit. Instead, you would have to add the economy benefits in order to receive a travel credit upon canceling.

Most likely that travel credit will be good for 12 months from the time of ticketing.

MileagePlus and Premier member benefits

If you’re wondering about earning miles and credit toward elite status things are almost the same between economy and Basic Economy.

MileagePlus members will earn award miles for Basic Economy tickets but they will be at 50% the rate as a standard economy ticket.

They will also earn Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) as well as lifetime miles and accrue toward the four-segment minimum.

But one major difference is that Basic Economy tickets are not eligible for Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs).

If you’re wondering about checked baggage, elite members will still receive the complimentary checked baggage allowance they are entitled to.

In-flight experience

The in-flight experience for a Basic Economy and economy passenger will be very similar.

Basic Economy passengers will still have access to purchase things like in-flight Wi-Fi, entertainment, food, drinks, etc.

And contrary to some rumors that surfaced at some point, Basic Economy passengers will not have to pay to use the lavatory.

Adding economy benefits (upgrading)

If you purchase a Basic Economy ticket but end up deciding that you don’t want to miss out on the standard economy benefits, you can still add them.

Prices may vary but you might be paying around $45. Keep in mind that every passenger on the itinerary must be upgraded with economy benefits — you cannot mix economy passengers with Basic Economy.

This can be done after the time of booking by visiting the Trip Details page on united.com, or Reservation Details in the United mobile app.

If you’re in the middle of the trip you can still add economy benefits to your return trip as long as the return trip has not started.

Obviously, the sooner you act the more seats you will have available to you, so acting quick can be very beneficial.

The Basic Economy upgrade benefits include being able to:

  • Cancel or change your flight without paying a change fee
  • Bring one full-size carry-on item on board
  • Receive a complimentary seat assignment prior to check-in
  • Purchase Economy Plus or premium cabin seats
  • Enjoy select Premier status benefits associated with your Premier status: complimentary access to Economy Plus and preferred seating, Complimentary Premier Upgrades, and the option to upgrade using PlusPoints, as applicable

You may not be able to add economy benefits to all Basic Economy tickets but generally you should be able to when flying on select domestic U.S. flights and short-haul flights to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.

Note that you may not be able to add economy benefits if you purchased a bulk fare, award ticket, or a deeply discounted ticket.

Now that you know about all of the major differences and benefits between basic economy and economy, let’s take a look at the price differences for some of the most popular routes.

After analyzing 100 data points, we found that United Basic Economy was on average about 18% cheaper than economy.

The price difference could range from a small as $3 to over $60 so if you’re choosing between the two fares you don’t always want to assume that United Basic Economy is a far superior deal.

Here is all of the data that we found.

When United Basic Economy is not worth it

There are a few instances when United Basic Economy will probably not be worth it.

  • You want to bring a carry-on item
  • You want to sit together with a family or group
  • You think you might need flexibility to make a change or cancel
  • You need to earn Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs)

As you can tell from above, the price difference between economy and United Basic Economy is not always that much but the price to add economy benefits can be much higher than that difference.

For example, imagine purchasing United Basic Economy because it is $20 cheaper but then having to shell out $45 to make a change or cancellation.

So at the end of the day you may end up spending more money trying to save if you later end up realizing you need the economy benefits.

United Basic Economy FAQ

United Airlines states that “Basic Economy fares are available on select routes” so you might not be able to find these on every route.

On domestic flights you are not offered a free carry-on but on many international routes you will be allowed a free carry-on bag.

No, you cannot change a Basic Economy fare. Instead, you will have to add economy benefits in order to make a change to your flight. This essentially works out to be a “change fee.”

Yes, you can earn Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) as well as lifetime miles and accrue toward the four-segment minimum. But Basic Economy tickets are not eligible for Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs).

You can take a personal item with you but full-sized carry-on bags are not allowed on many routes. When flying internationally, you may be allowed a carry-on bag so be sure to check the terms of your booking.

The standard checked bag fees will apply. However, if you have to check a carry-on bag you will have to pay an additional $25.

Upgrading can be done after the time of booking by visiting the Trip Details page on united.com or Reservation Details in the United mobile app. You may not be able to add economy benefits to all Basic Economy tickets.

The price will differ based on the route and where in the cabin you are selecting a seat. Prices can be as cheap as $10 but can increase to $20+.

We analyzed 100 data points and found that United Basic Economy is approximately 18% cheaper on average.

United Basic Economy is a way to save money on airfare no doubt. If you don’t have a need for a carry-on and don’t care where you sit on the plane, it could make sense for you to purchase a Basic Economy fare.

The problem is that if an unexpected situation arises and you need to make a change or cancellation, you may end up spending more money than you initially would have had you simply booked an economy ticket.

Also, while you can retain some elite benefits like priority boarding and free checked baggage, you lose out on things like upgrades to economy plus.

United airlines basic economy: 5 things to be aware of when booking.

United’s Basic Economy fare may end up costing more if you're unaware of certain fees.

  • Strict carry-on rules: Carry-ons are not included, except for international flights.
  • Random seat allocation: Seats are assigned randomly.
  • Board last: Basic Economy customers typically board in Group 6.

United Airlines offers three primary seating classes, each divided into two subclasses. United's Basic Economy class represents the airline's most economical ticket booking option. While the cheapest among all classes, the carrier's Basic Economy ticket can end up costing more if passengers are unaware of certain charges. This article discusses essential considerations to be aware of.

1 Strict carry-on rules

Carry-on bags are not included unless you're flying internationally.

Dimensions of carry-on items allowed with the basic economy fare:

United's Basic Economy fare is known for its strict rules. When traveling with this ticket type, passengers can travel with one personal item. United's website states that a personal item can be a shoulder bag, backpack, or laptop bag that fits under the seat in front of you. Extra items must be checked at the ticket counters. Bringing them to the gate incurs a $25 gate service fee per item and the applicable checked bag fee.

Meanwhile, typical carry-on bags are not complimentary in Basic Economy unless you fly to international destinations such as Canada, South America, across the pond, or over the Pacific.

Regarding checked baggage, Basic Economy passengers only receive a free checked baggage allowance when flying internationally across the Pacific. Checked baggage fees vary based on itinerary. You can calculate the costs for your flight on the airline's website. .

2 Random seat allocation

Seats can only be upgraded at the check-in counter.

With a Basic Economy fare, United passengers can expect seats with standard legroom and space. The one disadvantage is that the carrier will always assign a random seat to the passenger automatically before boarding. It is worth noting that United's Basic Economy fare seats are typically located at the back of the aircraft or in the middle of the plane, and the in-seat power is not always available.

According to ch-aviation , United's Basic Economy and Economy seats are 6 inches abreast with a pitch of 30 inches on its typical Boeing 737-800 aircraft fleet. This is less compared to seats in the airline's Economy Plus and Economy Comfort. Meanwhile, its Airbus A320-200s have the exact seat dimensions in Basic Economy and Economy class. Below, find the table showcasing United's narrowbody aircraft seat dimensions.

United Economy Vs Basic Economy: What You Need To Know

United's website states that travelers on the same reservation, including families with children under 12, may not be able to sit together unless:

"If you're traveling with a child under 12, we have new tools that make it easier for them to sit next to a family member for free. Otherwise, we can't guarantee your family or group will all sit together, so consider buying a seat assignment in advance."

3 Board last

Basic economy passengers board in group 6.

Boarding a plane first offers several advantages, including securing overhead cabin space near your assigned seat and the opportunity to disembark earlier, saving time. However, it's not surprising that United Airlines ' most economical fare doesn't provide this perk. Travelers with a Basic Economy ticket will typically board in the final boarding group, often in Group 6.

However, there are certain exceptions. This exception applies to:

  • Passengers with disabilities or all who need assistance
  • MileagePlus Premier members
  • Companions on the same reservation
  • Primary cardholders of eligible MileagePlus credit cards
  • Star Alliance Gold members

4 No online check-in

In most cases, passengers can only check-in at the airport.

How to check in for a flight:

  • Arrive at the check-in desk or kiosk at the airport's departure terminal.
  • Bring your checked luggage to the airport to confirm weight and size.
  • Ensure your personal item meets airport requirements if traveling with only one item.

There are certain things to know about the check-in process when booking Basic Economy with United. Online check-in is restricted to passengers who are either checking a bag or flying on a transoceanic route. However, upon online check-in, proceed to a check-in counter or designated kiosk in the airport lobby to drop off your bags.

If not checking a bag or flying over an ocean, checking in must be completed at the airport to confirm the size of personal items and ensure the absence of additional personal items if not eligible.

5 Perks for elite status

Basic economy still offers perks for elite status holders.

United MileagePlus Premier benefits for Basic Economy travelers:

  • Priority boarding
  • Free checked bag
  • Free carry-on bag

Carrying one of United's co-branded credit cards waives certain restrictions associated with United's Basic Economy fares. This includes priority boarding and free checked bag allowances, according to a report by Nerd Wallet .

If you already possess one of these cards, ensure to include your MileagePlus number in your United Basic Economy reservation to access the priority boarding benefit. Your ticket must be purchased with an eligible credit card to use these advantages. In addition, United MileagePlus Premier members receive similar benefits in Basic Economy. The number of free checked bags varies according to the Premier status level.

A Brief Guide To United Airlines' Economy Baggage Allowance

  • A number of different factors affect an economy passenger's baggage allowance, including flight type (domestic or international), loyalty status, and booking class.
  • Basic economy tickets restrict carry-ons, with checked bag fees differing with the destination and offering no option to pay for a carry-on.
  • Standard economy allows full-sized carry-ons but shares similar checked bag fees with basic economy; Economy Plus benefits can include earlier boarding.

One may think that when flying United Airlines, an economy class ticket is simply an economy ticket, one which comes along with a standard set of baggage allowances. This, however, is not always the case, and there are multiple different kinds of economy tickets, all of which come along with their own set of baggage guidelines.

First and foremost, baggage allowances vary significantly by flight, with clearly distinguished offerings for passengers on domestic and international services. Furthermore, members of United's loyalty program or those who hold Chase/United cobranded credit cards can also receive baggage perks and avoid certain fees.

However, the biggest distinguishing factor between United's different baggage allowances within the economy cabin is between different types of tickets. From basic economy tickets, which come along with the fewest bells and whistles, to the most flexible economy plus tickets, baggage allowances and fees vary heavily. In this article, we will take a deeper look at baggage allowances for passengers in United's economy class cabin.

Basic Economy

When analyzing baggage allowances, it is best to start with United's most restrictive fare class. With a basic economy ticket, passengers will be restricted from bringing a standard carry-on-sized bag onboard the aircraft.

Basic economy passengers can only bring one personal item onboard to stow under the seat in front of them. According to NerdWallet , passengers can check bags with the following fee schedule:

It is important to note that there is no opportunity for basic economy passengers to travel with a carry-on by paying a fee. If a passenger with a basic economy ticket brings a carry-on to the gate, they will be charged the appropriate fee to check the bag.

Get all the latest aviation news right here on Simple Flying!

Standard economy

Standard economy class tickets come with a more generous baggage allowance than basic economy bookings , as would be expected. With a regular economy ticket, United passengers can bring a full-sized carry-on bag onboard the aircraft, which can be stowed in the overhead bins.

For checked bags, however, there are relatively few benefits to a standard economy ticket over a basic economy one. When checking a bag, all fees are identical to those for basic economy tickets, except for a free bag for flights to or from Europe.

Delta Economy vs United Economy Which Is Better?

Economy plus.

With an Economy Plus ticket, passengers are entitled to a standard carry-on bag and a personal item, which is identical to the offering of a standard ticket. Fee schedules also remain identical for checked bags, offering limited benefits here.

There are some advantages to a United Economy Plus ticket when it comes to baggage allowances. While there may be few directly observable benefits from a financial perspective, Economy Plus passengers are more likely to be in earlier boarding groups, limiting the potential of having to gate-check a bag. These passengers will also be seated towards the front of the aircraft, where they will be able to exit the aircraft more quickly.

What is United basic economy?

United has two types of economy fares: economy and basic economy .

Basic economy provides a lower-priced fare but may place restrictions on seat assignment, boarding, carry-on baggage, upgrades, changes, refunds, elite earning and elite benefits. This guide will answer common questions about these restrictions and the basic economy experience on United, but be sure to also check out Benji Stawski 's review of United's basic economy .

Note that some basic economy restrictions are waived for Star Alliance elites and cardholders of United cobranded credit cards, two of which currently offer increased bonuses. If you fall into either of these groups, see the specific section related to your group to see which restrictions are waived for you.

  • United Explorer Card : Earn 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open.
  • United Quest Card : Earn 60,000 bonus miles and 500 Premier qualifying points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open.
  • United Club Infinite Card : Earn 80,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
  • United Business Card : Earn 75,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open.

Can I check a bag?

Yes. Baggage fees vary based on itinerary; you can calculate the fees for your flight here . If you don't have elite status with United or carry one of their credit cards, here are some examples of baggage fees:

  • Within the U.S. and Canada: $35 for the first bag ($30 if prepaid), $45 ($40 if prepaid) for the second bag, $150 for each additional bag. Between the U.S. and Europe: $75 for the first bag, $100 for the second bag, $200 for each additional bag.
  • Between the U.S. and Mexico : $30 for the first bag, $55 for the second bag, $180 for each additional bag.

Can I bring a carry-on?

Sometimes. For domestic flights, only one personal item such as a shoulder bag, purse, laptop bag or another item that is no larger than 9 by 10 by 17 inches is allowed. Mobility aids and other assistive devices are also permitted. This item must go under the seat in front of you. Any additional items must be checked at ticket counters; if you take them to the gate you'll pay a $25 gate-service fee per item plus the applicable checked bag fee.

On transatlantic flights operated by United and United Express, your carry-on baggage allowance is the same as for standard economy tickets. This means you can bring a carry-on item that is no larger than 9 by 14 by 22 inches as well as a personal item that is no larger than 9 by 10 by 17 inches.

Premier members of the MileagePlus program, Star Alliance Gold members and the primary cardmember of a qualifying MileagePlus credit card, like the United Explorer Card, may bring a carry-on and a personal item onboard.

Related: How to tell if your backpack counts as a personal or carry-on item

Can I select a seat?

basic economy travel credit united

Yes, but it'll cost you. Advance seat assignments may be available for purchase during booking and until check-in opens. Selecting a seat is oftentimes reasonably priced, usually $10 on short-haul flights. However, if you don't opt to purchase a seat assignment, a seat will be automatically assigned prior to boarding, for free. You can only purchase Economy Plus seats at check-in.

United's website states that travelers on the same reservation — including families with young children — may not be able to sit together unless advance seat assignments are purchased:

"With Basic Economy, if you do not purchase advance seat assignments, we're not able to guarantee that your family will be able to sit together. If it's important for your family to sit together, please consider purchasing advance seat assignments, if available, or selecting another fare."

Why can't I check in online?

You'll only be able to check in for your flight online if you're checking a bag or traveling on a transatlantic flight. (Note: After checking in online, go to a check-in counter or designated kiosk in the airport lobby to check your bags.) If you're not checking a bag or traveling on a transatlantic flight, you'll need to finish checking in at the airport to prove that you don't have more than one personal item.

When can I board?

basic economy travel credit united

You'll board in the last boarding group, unless you have elite status or select credit cards. More on that in a bit. Note: Basic Economy customers with disabilities or who need assistance are allowed to pre-board.

Can I change my flight?

No. Changes aren't allowed with basic economy. This includes advance and same-day changes.

Can I get a refund if I cancel my flight?

Refunds are not usually allowed except as stated in the United 24-hour flexible booking policy .

Do I still earn miles?

Yes. You'll earn award miles based on the fare and your MileagePlus status, as well as full Premier qualifying points and lifetime miles, and accrue toward the four-segment minimum. However, your flights will not count as Premier qualifying flights toward elite status.

Does having a cobranded credit card help?

basic economy travel credit united

Yes, but only if you use a cobranded United credit card to purchase your ticket, are the primary cardholder of this card at the time of check-in and provide your United MileagePlus number when you purchase the flight.

If you manage to satisfy all these requirements, you'll defeat basic economy by getting the following benefits even when flying on a basic economy fare:

  • One carry-on bag no larger than 9 by 14 by 22 inches for you and each of your travel companions traveling on the same reservation.
  • Priority boarding for you and your travel companions traveling on the same reservation.
  • First checked bag free for you and one travel companion traveling on the same reservation when you book your tickets using your United Explorer, United Club Infinite, United Quest, United Business or United Club Business Card.
  • First and second checked bags are free for you and one travel companion traveling on the same reservation when you book your tickets using one of the above cards.

The information for the United Club Business Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Does having elite status help?

Yes. When flying on a basic economy fare, Premier members and Star Alliance elites get the following benefits:

  • Your normal checked baggage allowance.
  • Your normal boarding group for you and your travel companions traveling on the same reservation.

However, elite status holders will not receive any of the following when flying on a basic economy fare:

  • Complimentary Economy Plus seating.
  • Complimentary upgrades.
  • Paid upgrades.
  • Mileage upgrades.
  • Upgrades using PlusPoints .

Bottom line

United Airlines basic economy fares are more restrictive and punitive than any of the other U.S. carriers. However, the United basic economy experience can be made better with elite status or an eligible cobranded United Airlines credit card when the card is used to book the flight.

So, if you haven't booked your ticket yet, or you plan to fly United basic economy again, you may want to consider getting a United Airlines credit card. Doing so now is particularly compelling due to the increased bonuses currently available:

These cards provide a carry-on bag and priority boarding in Group 2 for you and each of your companions traveling on the same reservation. Plus, you and one travel companion traveling on the same reservation get your first checked bag free. These benefits of these cards easily outweigh the fees if you use them to book United basic economy fares just a few times each year.
