1. Lambertikirche

The tallest building in the city, the Lutheran St Lambert’s Church has five towers, the highest of which measures 86 metres above the western facade.

The church goes back to the 12th century, but by the end of the 18th century had become dilapidated and was rebuilt in the 1870s and 80s with Brick Neo-Gothic architecture.

The interior had been redesigned a few decades earlier and you won’t be blamed for having a double-take when you step inside.

Because that dark Neo-Gothic facade gives way to a bright, ceremonious Neoclassical rotunda modelled on the Pantheon in Rome, with a glorious circular dome above Ionic columns.

The church is one of just five in Germany with this layout.

2. Horst-Janssen-Museum

The multitalented 20th-century artist Horst Janssen grew up in Oldenburg and lived here most of his life, becoming an honorary citizen in 1992. The dedicated museum opened in a purpose-built edifice in 2000 and gives you a timeline of his career and shows the many different mediums he used for his art: There are watercolours, posters, etchings, drawings and lithographies.

And as for paintings, the museum presents Janssen’s landscapes, self-portraits, still lifes and also his erotic paintings.

There are also information panels, interactive terminals and video displays to give you a better sense of Janssen’s career and what this famously eccentric man wanted to communicate in his work.

There are also personal items from the artists’ home and studio, as well as a silk carpet and grand piano designed by Janssen.

Oldenburg’s first art museum goes back 1867, making it one of the oldest purpose-built museum buildings in North Germany.

The Augusteum now holds the Galerie Alte Meister, showing Dutch, Italian, French and German Old Masters from the 1400s to the 1700s.

This trove of painting grew steadily after Peter I, Grand Duke of Oldenburg snapped up the personal collection of the painter Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, made up of 80 works.

There’s much to see in these galleries, and some pieces to look out for are the Virgin and Child with St Anne (1470) by Master of the Housebook, Portrait of a Florentine Boy (1541) by Francesco d’Rossi and Willem Claesz’s Breakfast Still life (1645).

5. Prinzepalais

Dating to 1826, the Prinzepalais was the residence for the Russian princes Peter and Alexander.

The latter would became Tsar from 1855 until his assassination in 1881. It was only in 2003 that the palace became home to Die Galerie Neue Meister (The New Masters Gallery), for art from the Romantic Period to post-War.

Some of the gallery’s many prestigious names from the 19th century include Lovis Corinth, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Max Liebermann and Max Slevogt.

But fans of Expressionist art will be most pleased with the Prinzepalais: All of the prominent members of the Die Brücke group are here, like Kirchner, Emil Nolde, Erich Heckel, Max Pechstein and Otto Mueller.

6. Schlossgarten Oldenburg

In 16 hectares, the grounds of Oldenburg Palace push out to the south of the city’s historical centre.

The garden is in the English landscape style and in 2014 celebrated its 200th anniversary.

Apart from the great height of the mature trees, what you see now isn’t so different from the park that was overseen by Peter I, Grand Duke of Oldenburg.

There are spacious, flowing lawns, winding paths and rhododendron bushes that erupt with colour in May.

The historic buildings are all still here, like the tea pavilion, winter house and gardener’s lodge.

7. Stadtmuseum Oldenburg

With a deceptive, modern lobby next to the Horst-Janssen-Museum, Oldenburg’s municipal museum is actually an ensemble of three interconnected historic villas.

These are the Ballin’sche Villa, the Jürgens’schen Villa and the Francksen Villa.

Together they offer a comprehensive summary of changing tastes and lifestyles from the Baroque period to Art Nouveau at the turn of the 20th century.

In the Ballin’sche Villa you’ll come across one of the museum’s marquee attractions, a collection of paintings by the Oldenburg painter Bernhard Winter.

He was part of the Heimatbewegung, at the end of the 1800s, which sought to conserve regional traditions and identity.

There’s also a lot of information about Oldenburg’s evolution from the 800s to the 1800s, with the help of historical documents, military regalia and six large scale models.

This grand belfry at the start of Langenstraße has an intriguing story to tell.

The tower is from the 1460s and was actually the bell-tower of a church and hospital that became defunct during the Reformation and were lost in the city fire in 1676. The Lappan meanwhile was secularised and became a habitable watchtower, while its current Baroque dome was added in 1709. All bus lines running through the centre of Oldenburg stop in front of this popular landmark, which now contains a travel agency.

9. Degodehaus

The last Burgher house to be found in Oldenburg also came through the fire of 1676 undamaged.

The Degodehaus is at Markt 24 a little way from the town hall, and is an early-16th-century residential house.

Five floors tall, the building is half-timbered and cantilevered and its facade is painted with pretty patterns on the panels between the beams.

On the ground floor is a shoe shop, and if you go inside something unforgettable is in store.

On the ceiling are allegorical paintings of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas from 1645. These images were plastered over in 1790 and were only rediscovered in 1992.

10. Botanischer Garten

In 3.7 hectares on Philosophenweg to the northwest of the city lies the botanical garden, maintained by the University of Oldenburg.

The garden is carefully delineated according to geographical zones like South America, Australia, Japan, China, North America and the Pacific Northwest, as well as environments like marsh, dune, heath and forest.

The cactus and succulent collection is inside a greenhouses that popped up in the 1990s, and around this time the picturesque cottage garden was laid out and the medicinal garden was revamped and expanded.

Botany aside, there are also terrariums and aviaries, while fearless peacocks patrol the park.

11. Landesmuseum für Natur und Mensch

This museum was born back in 1835 when Augustus, Grand Duke of Oldenburg purchased a compendium of insect and bird specimens.

Since then the attraction has taken on an array of cultural artefacts to go with its natural exhibits.

The most engrossing galleries here are all about the moorland around Oldenburg, and all of the items that have been discovered in the peat bogs.

There are Bronze Age amber beads, leather boots, stone steles, details of ancient bodies and a 4th-century veal-skin cape belonging to a boy.

There’s a detailed summary of the moors’ flora and fauna, as well as reconstructions of primitive houses in this environment.

You can also dip into the nature and history of the Hunte River at the freshwater aquarium in the basement.

12. Pulverturm

On the southern side of the Lambertikirche is the last remaining vestige of Oldenburg’s city defences.

This powder magazine dates from the final expansion of the fortifications in the 1500s, and at first would have been used as a watchtower when it had a conical roof.

The structure was converted into a powder magazine when Oldenburg was under Danish occupation in the 18th century.

And from 1765 on it was used as a icehouse before being declared a historic monument in the 1960s.

Since 1988 the Pulverturm has been used for exhibitions, including one for ceramic artists that has been running for the last 20 years.

13. Oldenburgisches Staatstheater

This splendid Historicist theatre is a big institution in Oldenburg, employing 450 people and attracting 200,000 spectators each year.

The multidisciplinary venue stages opera, operetta, musical theatre, ballet, concerts and children’s theatre.

14. Rathausmarkt

On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays there’s a fresh produce market at Markt between the town hall and the Lamberikirche.

The business hours are 07:00-14:30 (15:00 on Saturdays), and the market brings life, scents and colour to the centre of the city.

Come for fruit and vegetables, meat, cheese, flowers, bread and pastries, as well as occasional jewellery, leather and wickerwork stalls.

Oldenburg is a German city located in the state of Lower Saxony . Less then an hours drive from  Bremen , Oldenburg is about half way between Bremen and the Dutch border. Oldenburg has a rich history, with evidence of activity in the area from the 8th century. Oldenburg at one point was a Duchy , Grand Duchy , and Free State . Today, visitors can walk the historical old town center, view the church, stroll through the castle gardens, visit museums, and eat traditional German cuisine. We spent a day in Oldenburg and want to share our Oldenburg itinerary.

Where is Oldenburg, Germany?

Oldenburg is located in the German state of Lower Saxony . The city is located near the Hunte River which branches off the Weser River . When it comes to populations, Oldenburg ranks as the third largest city in Lower Saxony, just behind the cities of Braunschweig and Hanover. Unfortunately, Oldenburg is often overlooked as most visitors tend to visit the beautiful city of  Bremen .

Oldenburg has a large Train Station that is walkable from downtown. If traveling to Oldenburg by car, there are tons of parking options near the train station. 

How We Spent a Day in Oldenburg

After spending a day in Oldenburg , I think a day gives you plenty of time to visit the main attractions and sites within the city limits. Once downtown in the altstadt, everything with the exception of a few museums is within walking distance. After an entire day of exploring Oldenburg, we found that we saw everything we wanted to see. Below are some of the highlights of Oldenburg that we did and recommend. 

Admired the outside of St. Lamberti Church

St. Lamberti or St. Lambert’s Church in Oldenburg is the cities most notable building and dominates the skyline. St. Lambert’s Church is Oldenburg’s tallest building , the center tower has a height of 86 meters .

Visitors can get incredible views of the church from the Sclossgarten by the Schlossteich . I found the exterior of the church to be absolutely beautiful but the interior was very underwhelming as it was very bland. 

Enjoyed the Peacefulness and Beauty of Schlossgarten Oldenburg

The Schlossgarten or Castle Park was a highlight for us. The park is within walking distance from St. Lambert’s Church and the Schloss (castle). 

We visited Oldenburg toward the end of October of 2022 and the leaves were changing adding to the beauty of the park. Schlossgarten was huge, there were a variety of smaller gardens within the park, a lake, plenty of places to sit and relax, and several kilometers worth of trails. 

Sampled Food at the Rathausmarkt

Situated between St. Lambert’s Church and the Rathaus (town hall) is an open space known as the Rathausmarkt . This open space is where weekend and holiday markets occur as well as events. Jill and I visited on a Saturday and there was a local market taking place. There were a few rows of local vendors selling everything from meats and cheeses to flowers and woodcraft. 

We sampled a few treats around the market. That day, I was in the mood for a warm leberkäse sandwich . Leberkäse is basically a loaf of meat consisting of corned beef and pork. It’s usually baked and gets a nice crust on the edges. I am sure it doesn’t sound that amazing, but trust me, it is! 

Spaghetti Ice Cream at Gelateria Centrale San Marco

Germany has some of the best ice cream parlors on the planet. Almost every town and certainly every city has an ice cream parlor or café that serves fancy ice cream dishes. One of my favorite ice cream dishes in Germany is Spaghettieis (Ice Cream).

Spaghettieis is an ice cream dish famous around Germany. The dish consists of ice cream made to resemble a plate of spaghetti. It’s typically vanilla ice cream with whipped cream, strawberry glaze, and coconut or white chocolate shavings which are meant to look like grated parmesan cheese. 

On the edge of the Rathausmarkt next to St. Lamberti Church is a café called Gelateria Centrale San Marco that served up a variety of ice cream dishes. Of course, I had their Spaghettieis and it was fabulous, even though the weather was cold and damp. 

Strolled Through the Altstadt and saw Lappan

Oldenburg has a nice and manageable altstadt or old town. It’s very walkable and easy to navigate. The old streets are lined with various shops and restaurants. Many of the buildings in Oldenburg’s altstadt are historical and worth seeing, so don’t forget to pay attention to the beautiful architecture of some of the buildings. 

One building in Oldenburg that really stands out is Lappan . Lappan is an old bell tower and oldest building in the city. Unfortunately, when we visited Oldenburg, Lappan was being renovated and I couldn’t get any decent photos. 

Schloss Oldenburg

In German, Schloss means palace. Schloss Oldenburg is a beautiful palace located in the downtown area. It has a history dating back to the mid 1600’s when it was the residence for the counts of Oldenburg. In the late 1700’s until the early 1900’s, Schloss Oldenburg was the main residence for the dukes and grand dukes. 

Today, one of the most striking features of this palace is the beautiful yellow exterior. There is also a State Museum within the palace. I’d recommend checking the  Museum Website for an updated outline of the exhibits as well as viewing the entrance times and fees.

Visited the Landesmuseum Nature and Humankind in Oldenburg and saw the Husbäke Man

The primary reason we visited Oldenburg was to visit the Landesmuseum Nature and Humankind . I absolutely love science and history museums and found this one to be particularly interesting. The day we went, they had a special exhibit on mummies. They had several real mummies on display from animals like cats and hyenas to actual human mummies from Ancient Egypt and Peru. 

The museum had several floors and was home to many taxidermy animals found around the world and had a lot of interesting artifacts not only from Germany and their history but ancient artifacts from various cultures throughout history. 

One of the most fascinating permanent exhibits at the Landesmuseum Nature and Humankind was their exhibit called Moor . Much of Northern Germany’s habitat consists of moor and people have used this land for thousands of years. The exhibit had a lot of information on the moor region of Northern Germany, but they also had a few bog bodies on display. Like our trip to  the Drents Museum in Assen , seeing the bog bodies was my primary obsession for visiting the museum. There was a cool display showing the layers of the bog. There was one particular bog body that caught my interest at the museum and that was the Husbäke Man or Husbäke II . 

The Husbäke Man is a bog body that was found in 1936 near the German town of Edewecht, not far from Oldenburg. According to the museum, the body of the Husbäke Man was found by a peat worker. Like many of the bog bodies discovered, he was very well preserved due to the lack of oxygen in the many layers of dead moss in the moor region. 

The Husbäke Man was found lying face down in the ground. Because he was so well preserved it is believed that he was quickly covered by the elements and only his feet dissolved.  Unlike the  Yde Girl , the Husbäke Man showed no signs of injuries , so he potentially died of an accident or natural causes. The Husbäke Man had a beard which identified him as male, he was around the age of 20 when he died and was 1.75 meters tall. His death is estimated to be around 765-520 BC. His hair looks to be red but it was most likely blonde or brown at the time of death. The red hair is caused by chemicals found in the moor. 

Other bog bodies on display at the Nature and Humankind Museum include the Dead Man from Jührdener-feld and the Dead Body from the Lengener Moor (Tarbarg New England).

So, is Oldenburg Worth Visiting?

So, is Oldenburg worth visiting? Honestly speaking, I do think Oldenburg is worth a visit. I think there is just enough here to do and see for a nice half day to day trip. Although, I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to visit Oldenburg unless there is something specific you are interested in like the Husbäke Man at the Landesmuseum. Sure, the exterior of the church is beautiful the altstadt has some interesting buildings, but there is nothing that stands out that separates Oldenburg from other great cities around Germany.

Full of culture, lively locals and great beer, Germany is home to many captivating travel destinations. Germany's capital city is akin to Paris and London in that you just can't visit the country without going. Like many large cities, Berlin offers something for everyone, from a lively nightlife scene to restorative green spaces. Those looking take in the arts can explore the impactful East Side Gallery (on the Berlin Wall) or visit the more traditional art galleries at Museum Island. Berlin also pays homage to its ominous past with powerful and humbling attractions. Must-visit historical sites include the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the Berlin Wall Memorial, the Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie.

Visitors flock to Munich every fall to take part in Oktoberfest, a two-week-long ode to Bavarian traditions featuring Germany's best beers and bratwurst. But Munich, one of the largest German cities, offers so much more than just this festival. The city is home to beautiful gardens, exquisite churches and engaging museums worth exploring. Wander around Munich's charming neighborhoods and spend some time in Marienplatz, a central square that's home to the world-famous Rathaus-Glockenspiel and hosts a popular Christmas market.

Though Neuschwanstein Castle was never meant for visitors, it has become one of Germany's most popular tourist attractions. King Ludwig II commissioned the castle as a place of refuge from public life. Today, more than 1 million people stroll through the property every year. The castle's Romanesque Revival-style is certainly romantic; in fact, it inspired Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland. But what elevates this castle to bucket list status is its unbelievable setting, perched in the Bavarian Alps. From the castle, travelers can get an eyeful of the surrounding mountains, Alpine lakes and striking foliage (especially during fall).

This scenic mountain town in the Bavarian Alps calls to adventure-hungry travelers. In winter, Garmisch-Partenkirchen draws skiers looking to hit the slopes and learn about the Winter Olympics that were held here in 1936. In summer, hikers descend upon the town hoping to climb Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak (the summit is also reachable via cable car). Other can't-miss attractions include Lake Eibsee and Partnachklamm, a narrow gorge characterized by steep rock walls and roaring rapids. Meanwhile, if you're looking to unwind, take a stroll through Historic Ludwigstrasse or explore the grounds of Linderhof Palace and Park.

One of the best places to see Germany's natural splendor is the fairy-tale-inspiring Black Forest. This section of Baden-Württemberg encompasses more than 2,000 square miles of enchanting waterfall-filled forests, rolling hills and lengthy valleys dotted with half-timbered villages. A great introduction to the Black Forest is driving along its scenic namesake highway (Schwarzwaldhochstrasse); be sure to start or end your journey in the spa town of Baden-Baden to benefit from its thermal springs. Dresden is made for architecture enthusiasts. The city, which is located in eastern Germany near the Czech border, features remarkable facades and edifices adorned with ornate architectural details. Though you'll have your pick of stunning structures, make sure you visit the Dresden Zwinger (a Baroque-style palace) and Dresden Royal Palace (a Renaissance landmark where the Fürstenzug, the world's largest porcelain mural, resides). If you prefer modern architecture, head to Kunsthofpassage to gaze at its quirky buildings, one of which has singing drainpipes. And those visiting during festive season can't miss Striezelmarkt, Germany's oldest and largest Christmas market.

For a memorable vacation in the Bavarian Alps, visit Berchtesgaden. This destination, which sits on the Austrian border, captivates visitors with its massive peaks, cascading forests, deep valleys and Alpine lake and river that make up Berchtesgaden National Park. Start your journey driving the scenic Rossfeld Panoramastrasse before traveling south to awe-inspiring Lake Königssee and the Eagle's Nest, a mountaintop beer garden. If you enjoy skiing, arrive in winter when Jenner Mountain is blanketed with snow.

First-time visitors to this historic German city should make a beeline for Cologne Cathedral – this breathtaking example of Gothic architecture is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city's most popular landmark. Meanwhile, travelers with a sweet tooth should make time in their schedule for a tour of Cologne's Chocolate Museum. Other activities include relaxing on the lawn at Rheinpark, exploring Cologne's Old Town, cruising the Rhine River and taking in spectacular city views from a cable car. Visit in February or March when Cologne's annual Carnival celebration takes place, an event featuring festivities like masked balls, parades and parties.

This city in southwestern Germany is well known for housing the country's oldest university. However, its good looks and superb location along the Neckar River also make it a great destination to enjoy old-world character and a small-town ambiance. Primarily known for its winemaking capabilities, Rüdesheim am Rhein is a small village located at the base of Germany's Rhine Valley. While you'll surely want to spend the majority of your time here sampling Rüdesheim am Rhein's famous riesling, you should save time for other activities as well. The restaurant- and market-lined Drosselgasse alley is a perfect place to hear live music, and you'd be remiss to skip the one-of-a-kind Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet during your trip. Another worthwhile activity is a castle cruise along the Rhine River.

Frankfurt is best known as the financial capital of the eurozone thanks to it housing the European Central Bank, but don't assume the city is nothing more than a concrete jungle. The countdown to UEFA Euro 2024 is on and it promises to be another brilliant international tournament.

While multiple cities from various countries were used at Euro 2020, things will go back to normal in the summer.

Euro 2024 will take place across 10 cities in Germany, and it will be their first major tournament as hosts since the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

“We plan to replicate that, updated for modern times. We will organise a huge football party in Germany.”

Euro 2024 gets underway in Munich when Germany face Scotland at the Allianz Arena on June 14.

The stadium is home to Bayern Munich and has hosted some iconic games, including Chelsea’s win over the German side in the 2012 Champions League final.

Alongside the football, Munich also has plenty to offer for fans staying in the city.

You can take a walk around the Olympic Village or visit the Deutsches Museum, one of the biggest science and technology museums in the world.

The capital of Germany, Berlin is one of the country’s most vibrant cities – and it will be immersed in football fever at Euro 2024.

The Olympiastadion has a 74,475 capacity and will host six games at the tournament, including the final on July 14.

It has previously hosted the 2006 World Cup final between Italy and France and the 2015 Champions League final between Barcelona and Juventus.

Berlin is also famous for its landmarks and historical sites, including the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag building and the Berlin Wall Memorial.

England’s first game in Euro 2024 sees them travel to Gelsenkirchen to take on Serbia at the Veltins-Arena, the home ground of Schalke 04.

Should they come first in Group C, Gareth Southgate’s side will also return to the city in the Round of 16.

The Veltins-Arena hosted the 2004 Champions League final and was the venue for England’s penalty shootout defeat against Portugal in the 2006 World Cup.

But there are plenty of other things to see and do outside the stadium and families will enjoy the Zoom Erlebniswelt, which is one of the best zoos in Germany.

The second largest city in Germany, Hamburg will play host to five Euro 2024 games at the Volksparkstadion.

The stadium is home to Hamburger SV and has previously hosted the 2010 UEFA Europa League final, which saw Fulham lose 2-1 against Atletico Madrid.

Hamburg is often nicknamed the Venice of the North due to its world-renowned harbour and visitors can take brilliant boat tours along the River Elbe.

After a night at the football, the legendary entertainment district in the heart of St Pauli is worth a visit as it is packed with bars, clubs and live music venues.
