Such a fun cruise- the staff are incredibly cheerful and bend over backwards to help! Lots of great snorkeling daily, and we felt as though we really saw a real side of village life. Nau-the activity director managed to take us in a culturally appropriate way into several small villages for church, dinner, and school visits. All Fijians sing and have lovely voices!

To be honest the 3/5 review is not a true reflection of the 6 stars I would like to award the staff for their friendliness and efforts made to make our experience memorable. Big thanks to Sana (Doctor) who looked after me when I came down with some tummy bug. For us this was our first dip of our toe into the water for ocean cruises. Admittedly it was not the 1000+ capacity vessel that you may associate with mainstream cruises. This was 60 max which was what enticed us to give it a go. While meeting some great people from around the globe, structured holidays such as this are not for us. First and definitely our last cruise holiday. As with the passenger numbers the rooms are also small. The toilet/shower was certainly different. Basically a cubicle that when the shower was turned on everything was saturated. Toilet, floors … everything. If you are claustrophobic the shower will be a hurdle. The vessel is somewhat overdue for a major refit to bring it up to the standards that experiences of this price point warrant. The website photos show an onboard pool to cool off however it was never filled while on board and seemed to be used for storage. Suspect it has not been working for some time. The food overall was good though it was at best variable. There was a sense from others we spoke to that the quality of food seemed to decline for those on the longer 7 day cruise we joined mid-point. What was very disappointing as our introduction was the ‘picnic’ lunch packed for us when we arrived onboard in a cooler bag to take to the sandbar before we went snorkelling. Without an ice block in the tropics is nuts. Risky way to start the voyage for us so kept to the fruit. Would have even much better for us to have had a light meal onboard before being ferried across to the other passengers on the beach. Having read Tripadvisor reviews and taking the advice NOT to have a cabin close to where the anchors were released (and placing this request in writing weeks before ) seemed a reasonable request. Sadly, we were placed in a cabin where the anchors were hauled up and released. HELLO! Our package did include an upgrade if available, however we were told the cruise was fully booked but this was not the case we found when we boarded. We did finally manage to get upgraded after some discussion. Overall, the staff were faultless. Nau was a real star and deserves the promotion. If it your first trip to Fiji then weigh it up and do your research. If you have been to Fiji before and visited the local village to buy some shells or dropped into a village school to feel guilty and buy more shells then perhaps this is for you. Personally would be much happier to know that a levy from each tourist was going directly to the people via the tour operator. Has so much potential but did not tick all the boxes for us.

Vinaka for the review and sorry you were unwell but it sounds like you were well looked after. Regarding a few of your comments, yes, the bathrooms are small hence why they are marketed as 'yacht-style' ensuites. The refit is underway at the moment which will give the vessel a great facelift. Thank you for the comment re the food (both the picnic and decline over the cruise), we will pass this along to our Corporate Chef. Vinaka.

Fabulous 7 night cruise with excellent crew. They kept us busy every day, snorkelling, swimming, scenic cruising. Beautiful islands of Yassawa and Mamanucca islands. We visited 2 schools, probably 1 too many, village tour, good hike to a lovely tea shop, and Grandma's souvenir shop. Excellent value with MyCruises. Did I say, the crew are amazing... especially Nau.

This was my first time to Fiji & what an amazing way to visit the Yasawa Islands! We had an opportunity to snorkel daily and sometimes twice a day - all beautiful locations - sometimes from the beach and sometimes from the tender boats. We visited a variety of islands and had an opportunity to meet villagers and learn a little about how they live. I participated in most of the activities and I enjoyed every minute of it! The Fiji Princess is the perfect sized ship with only 32 cabins, so I was able to meet most of the guests. The staff are also great, especially the amazing cruise director, Nau Dakuiliga, she seemed to always be available to assist with anything that was needed. She is very kind, helpful and a real pleasure to be around. I don’t remember many of the other staff names, but I found Sana (bartender) and the tender boat operators were great!

blue lagoon cruise menu

Vinaka for the great review and we are so glad you enjoyed your trip. Remember, should you choose to cruise with us again, you qualify for our 20% off returnee discount.

This trip was an up close and personal cruise with just 64 guests and probably 1/2 as many cruise workers. These are just a few of the people who made our trip so memorable-cruise director "Nau", all tender drivers especially "Watii" and the other two whose names I forget, Gus (thanks again for the mangos!) Sana at the bar, Maureen in reception & Dau for getting our A/C working. Two points-if you can, bring any school supplies, sporting equipment, ladies bras (you can't get a job there if you don't have a bra and they are expensive for the Fiji women to buy), or anything else but run it by the cruise desk if you have question. They visit the school each week but not all the islands. Nau can tell you what islands don't get visited very often. And if you don't mind the stairs take the top floor rooms (they are most all alike but some of the lower rooms in the front hear more of the anchors & tender boats going up and down. We were a group of six Americans who made friends with almost everyone. You Aussies still talk funny! Thanks everyone for making us feel welcome.

Vinaka for the review and we are so glad you enjoyed your trip.

The trip itself was amazing from start to finish. The beautiful Yasawa islands were positively jaw-droppingly beautiful, and what an intimate and luxurious way to experience these Islands!!! Blue Lagoon Cruises delivered exceptional service, an outstanding itinerary, entertainment galore (singing, instruments and dancing, both on shore, and on board) and ensured we ate and drank very well!! Champagne in the morning… delicious varieties of desserts, local cuisine.. I was also particularly impressed by how much snorkelling we did! That was my main goal on the trip, and it did not disappoint !!! We snorkeled every day, and twice on one of the days, including with sharks!!! The cultural visits to villages and opportunity to experience the Fijian culture, way of life and peoples was incredibly illuminating. I would highly recommend BLC for a great balance between activity and relaxation, in an upscale setting with outdoor recreation at your beck and call. My spa treatment (massage) on the back upper deck was divine! From the line fishing trip we did (6 fish caught!) to the swimming with sharks, a barbecue feast on the beach and diving off the back of the ship into aquamarine coloured waters, BL Cruises guided us through it all perfectly. In particular, I need to add this: I met one of the kindest and most hard-working, capable people I’ve ever met in my life. The cruise Director, Nau Dakuiliga, made everything perfect for my friend and myself!! Any question we had, any issue, she was there to answer, to solve and encourage, with the upmost kindness and gentle personality. I was having problems with my mask fogging, and before I could even find her, she was there helping me, showing me how to defog my mask and doing it for me. She also taught me how to dive down and equalize properly with such joyous encouragement! Always with her wonderful smile and kindness. Even when she was obviously very busy, Nau would always stop what she was doing to say Bula and if we needed anything. Every time we interacted with Nau, she went above and beyond. All the crew were hospitable and great, but Nau is one of those exceptional people whose kindness and bright soul illuminates everyone around her! All service industry people should be as kind, clever, generous and humourous as her 😊 Overall, Blue Lagoon cruises was a wonderful way to experience not only the lands of Fiji, but the beautiful people who are lucky enough to call it home!!!

The ‘M.V. Fiji Princess’ Experience

The M.V. Fiji Princess will be your home away from home for the duration of your cruise, except you’ll wake up in a different stunning location each morning and with 70 years' experience cruising the islands of Fiji, we know all the best places to take you! Who better to show you their home than the Fijians themselves so we pride ourselves on having an all-Fijian crew and with a high crew member-to-guest ratio, so you know you will be well looked after. Our crew will quickly know you by name and every way you turn there will be a big ‘BULA’ welcome.

Intimate Cruising

The small size of Blue Lagoon Cruises' cruise ship, the M.V. Fiji Princess , is just one of the reasons why a cruise with us is so special. Measuring 179 feet (55 metres), she can access bays and islands that would be impossible to reach in a larger ship – we can get so close to shore that we can tie off to a coconut tree and you can swim to the beach.

  • With a maximum of 64 passengers and up to 30 Fijian crew, you know you will be well looked after with true Fijian hospitality
  • Due to our small number of guests, no matter which beach or island we visit, you won’t be overwhelmed by crowds. Most of the time, our guests are the only people on the beach!
  • The vessels décor is fresh and nautical, with echoes of the romantic age of cruising gone by
  • You only need to unpack once and then let your floating hotel take you from an idyllic place to an idyllic experience – every day somewhere and something different
  • Visit traditional Fijian villages, swim in crystal-clear lagoons, and gaze out on tropical vistas you thought only existed in movies
  • Our guests often make friends for life, given the social atmosphere of small-ship cruising
  • If conditions are rough due to winds and swells, it's easy for us to alter our itinerary to cruise on the sheltered side of the islands

Cruising Schedule

Once a week on a Friday,  M.V. Fiji Princess  departs Port Denarau for her voyage into the enchanting Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. There, she spends seven days cruising from one spectacular setting to the next before returning to Denarau (this is our 7-night cruise). We also operate a high-speed transfer vessel, which meets  M.V. Fiji Princess  in the Sacred Islands, connecting our 3- and 4-night guests with the cruise. Operating our itineraries in this way means one thing: we spend more time cruising the Yasawa Islands, and less time getting there!

The excellent onboard facilities include:

  • Open-air dining room, lounge, and bar
  • Open-air sky deck with bar
  • Splash pool
  • Onboard Spa
  • Snorkelling gear, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards
  • Free Wi-Fi in public spaces (where coverage allows)
  • Self-service guest laundry
  • Onboard books and games
  • Sun-loungers
  • Filtered drinking water stations throughout the ship (M.V. Fiji Princess is single-use plastic-free)
  • Complimentary 24-hour barista tea/coffee (we have 2 great machines available onboard)
  • Souvenir items are available for purchase onboard

Cruise Preparation

Blue Lagoon Cruises cater for people of all ages and fitness levels. Although you do have to be able to make your way up and down narrow staircases. While getting in and out of the tender boats can require a certain degree of mobility, the crew will tailor shore landings to suit and there’s nothing wrong with staying on board for those that would prefer to relax and enjoy the scenery. On or off the ship, the Blue Lagoon Cruises team will ensure that you will have a truly memorable experience.

Dress standard

The dress code is casual and informal, even at dinner. We encourage our guests to wear what they feel comfortable in and to leave their dinner jackets and high heels at home. For those wanting to visit villages for cultural reasons, we do ask that men wear a sulu (provided in your cabin) and women dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered.

Arrival and Departures

Blue Lagoon Cruises use a high-speed transfer vessel to transport guests on the 3- and 4-night itineraries one-way (either to or from the Scared Islands). This allows the M.V. Fiji Princess to remain in the islands only returning to Denarau marina once a week.

Transfers between Mamanuca Island Resorts and M.V. Fiji Princess use local transfer operators on vessels that are known for their comfort and sea-worthy qualities.

The Guide to Cruises Around Fiji

The guide to fiji’s small-ship cruises.

Fiji is an archipelago of 333 islands. While most visitors to Fiji stay in the same resort for the whole time, only seeing one island, those who are a little more intrepid have an amazing alternative: small-ship cruises. Essentially resorts on the water, Fiji’s small-ship cruises take you from island to island, stopping in a new sheltered bay or lagoon each night. You don’t need to worry about the hassle of changing accommodation each night, as you’ll be staying in one of the cabins of Fiji’s cruise ships, often having access to a swimming, spa and a delightful restaurant. But which cruise in Fiji is right for you? Find out in this guide to the cruises around Fiji.

Quick Tips for Taking a Cruise in Fiji

  • Fiji’s cruises have regular sailings to the Mamanucas and the Yasawas, but only a handful of sailings a year to Vanua Levu, Taveuni, etc. Trips to these latter outer islands book up within weeks of the sailing dates being released, so keep an eye out for when these cruise dates are released and book as soon as possible
  • All cruises in Fiji depart from Port Denarau. For advice on staying in Port Denarau before your cruise, check out The Complete Guide to Denarau Island
  • Fiji’s small-ship cruises are a lot different from international cruises that call at Fiji – for more information on the latter, check out The Guide to Taking a Cruise to Fiji .

For more tips, take a look at the 10 Tips for Taking a Small-ship Cruise in Fiji .

Captain Cook Cruises

Specialising in small-ship cruises in Fiji, Captain Cook Cruises offers regular sailings of the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, as well as exclusive voyages to Fiji’s lesser-visited islands, like the Lomaiviti Islands, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Kadavu and the Lau Islands.

The all-inclusive cruises take care of the essentials for you, such as all meals through their onboard buffet and a la carte restaurant, WiFi, spa, swimming pool and gym. Then guests have the option to make the journey their own, whether it’s through the PADI 5-star scuba diving operator onboard, by indulging in an onboard massage, letting the little ones loose in the kids’ club or taking part in one of the many island tours and excursions.

All cruises depart from Port Denarau on Viti Levu.

Cruises with Captain Cook Cruises

  • 3-Night Southern Yasawa Island Cruise
  • 4-Night Northern Yasawa Island Cruise
  • 7-Night Mamanuca & Yasawa Island Cruise
  • 7-Night Colonial Fiji Discovery Cruise (Lomaiviti & Taveuni Islands)
  • 7-Night 4 Cultures Discovery Cruise (Vanua Levu)
  • 11-Night Lau & Kadavu Cruise

These cruises are also available to compare and book on Tripadvisor .

Blue Lagoon Cruises

Offering a selection of adult-only small-ship cruises in the Mamanuca and the Yasawa Islands, Blue Lagoon Cruises provides a unique way to explore this South Pacific paradise.

The small ship of Blue Lagoon Cruises has just 34 cabins for a boutique experience while sailing around the archipelago of Fiji, with just four hours of cruising time per day. Cruises include a range of complimentary excursions and activities, snorkelling equipment, all meals, traditional Fijian entertainment and more, while optional extras on their cruises include sports fishing, scuba diving and spa treatments.

Cruises with Blue Lagoon Cruises

  • 3-Night Explorer Cruise
  • 4-Night Wanderer Cruise
  • 7-Night Escape to Paradise

Ferries and Day Cruises in Fiji

If a small-ship cruise doesn’t sound like your thing, then there are alternative ways to island-hop in Fiji. Ferries and water taxis in the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands present an alternative way to go from island to island, staying at various island resorts rather than on the boat.

South Sea Cruises/Awesome Adventures Fiji

The hop-on hop-off ferry with South Sea Cruises , also known as Awesome Adventures Fiji, offers flexible multi-journey passes to create your own itinerary around the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. The Bula Pass allows you to hop on and hop off the ferry as much as you want within five to 15 days with twice-daily departures. Alternatively, there are set itineraries passes for those who would prefer less planning, such as:

  • 5-Night Island Time Package
  • 6-Night Coconut Cruiser Package
  • 8-Night Fiji Discovery Package
  • 11-Night Tropical Island Explorer Package

These cruises are also available to compare and book on Tripadvisor . Get more tips on ferry passes in the How to Make the Most of Your Fiji Island Hopping-Pass .

Day Cruises in Fiji

If you have limited time in Fiji, day cruises departing from Port Denarau are a good way to get a taste of the islands. Most day cruises either take passengers for a day trip to one island and resort or do some island-hopping and snorkelling. Check out listings for both experiences in:

How to Visit Blue Lagoon in Iceland on a Cruise

As one of the most popular places to visit in Iceland, we answer all your questions on how to visit Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik, Iceland on a Cruise.

How to Visit the Blue Lagoon

Share this post:

What is the blue lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon is a series of geothermal pools that were created in the 1970’s. While the lava landscape itself is natural, the water actually comes from the runoff of a nearby power plant. The creation of the pools occurs as part of the process of creating electricity and renews itself every 48 hours. Don’t worry, it is perfectly safe to soak in this geothermal spa. The water contains no added chemicals, just naturally occurring materials that can do wonders for your skin. The milky coloration of the water is a combination of algae, silica, and minerals that are thought to have medicinal powers.

How to Visit Blue Lagoon on a Cruise

How Hot is the Water in the Blue Lagoon?

The water is heated by natural geothermal processes occurring underground. While temperatures underground can reach 300 degrees Fahrenheit, the average temperature in the pools is approximately 102 degrees Fahrenheit. For most people, the warm water will feel soothing and relaxing. As a reference point, most whirlpool hot tubs are kept at a temperature between 100 to 104 degrees.

Who Can Visit the Blue Lagoon?

Families with children two years or older are welcome at the Blue Lagoon. Children under the age of 13 are allowed in free of charge along with an accompanying adult admission. Each member of a party over the age of 13 will be required to have a ticket to gain admission to the spa. Even those who can’t swim are welcomed at the Blue Lagoon. The deepest portion of the water is about 4.5 feet and there are lifeguards on duty at all times.

How Much is the Admission to the Spa?

There are two different packages from which you can choose when visiting the Blue Lagoon. Most tours and cruise line excursions come with the Comfort Package (between $62-$89 USD) which includes a locker, a towel, mud mask, one drink, and entrance to the facilities. You can upgrade to the Premium Package ($89-$116 USD) which includes a bathrobe and slippers, an algae mask, and some perks at the onsite restaurant in addition to the offerings of the Comfort Package. In-water massages are also available for an additional cost.

How to Visit Blue Lagoon in Iceland on a Cruise

If you want to splurge, you can purchase one of the limited Retreat Spa packages. This exclusive package gives you private access to a reserved area of the Blue Lagoon. This also comes with access to the Retreat Spa, additional skin care products, a private changing room, and other benefits. This upgraded package is not cheap, costing between $500 to $650 a person.

How Do I Get Tickets to the Blue Lagoon?

You will need to reserve tickets for Blue Lagoon in advance. If you purchase a cruise excursion, the ticket will most likely be included in your package. If you plan to go there on your own, you will want to buy tickets online. Ticket prices fluctuate depending on the day of the week and the time you plan to visit, with peak times and weekends having the highest prices.

blue lagoon cruise menu

When booking your ticket, you are requested to select an arrival time. The Blue Lagoon website clearly states “ If you don’t arrive at the pre-booked date and time, Blue Lagoon cannot guarantee availability .”

How Do I Get to the Blue Lagoon?

The ride from the cruise terminal ( Skarfabakki Harbour) is about 51 Kilometers away which has a travel time of about 45 minutes.  Most cruise lines offer an excursion to this popular attraction which includes round-trip transportation and a ticket for the Comfort Package.

blue lagoon cruise menu

The Blue Lagoon website also offers transportation from several locations in the city, including the cruise terminal, for $50 a person. When working out the total costs, there is not much savings based on which mode of transportation you choose. The one benefit of booking directly with Blue Lagoon is the ability to pick a preferred departure time from the cruise port, whereas cruise excursions will usually leave at only one set time.

One word of caution is don’t miss the bus. While there are taxis in the area, they will cost you. The trip back to the cruise port will probably run you between $125-$150+ USD.

What Else Do I Need to Know Before Visiting Blue Lagoon?

When visiting the Blue Lagoon, you will be given a wrist band that will serve as your “wallet” while in the spa. This wrist band will also be used to access a locker in the changing facilities. Yes, you do need to shower before entering the water; however, even though Icelanders are accustomed to changing and showering in public, you will have access to private showers and changing stalls if desired.

You should also remember to remove jewelry as the minerals could discolor the metals. Women will also want to tie their hair up or apply plenty of conditioner before entering the lagoon. Cameras and phones are permitted, but a waterproof option is definitely recommended. We used our iPhone with a Lifeproof case to ensure no water damage.

Should I Visit the Blue Lagoon in Iceland on Cruise?

Yes, the trip to the Blue Lagoon was a fun and memorable excursion that we both enjoyed. Given our time in port, we were able to see some of the Downtown area during the day prior to visiting the Blue Lagoon and visited the Golden Circle on our second day in the city. Having a relaxing evening with a drink in hand (yes, there is even a swim up bar) in a thermal hot spring is something you don’t get to do every day!

blue lagoon cruise menu

Our four hour tour was just enough time as it gave us about 2 hours at the Blue Lagoon. This equated to about 90 minutes in the water. If you’d prefer to spend more time in the geothermal spa or exploring the grounds, you should plan the trip accordingly.

Top 5 caribbean mule recipes.

Top 5 Caribbean Mule Recipes

May 09, 2020

In this post, we reveal the Top 5 Caribbean Mule Recipes anywhere on the internet. Read on to learn how to make this awesome variation on the classic Moscow Mule!

Introduction

At times, one desires something new and exciting that complements the old. So, in comes the Caribbean Mule!

While you are probably familiar with the Moscow Mule, the Caribbean Mule is a variation that might just become your new favorite. The Caribbean Mule is a popular Mule that substitutes vodka for rum. An avid rum-drinker will no doubt love this version of the traditional Moscow Mule. And the best part is that it can easily be made from scratch without leaving your home.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the easy-to-make, yet absolutely irresistible recipes for the Caribbean Mule. We’ll explore how the cocktails tastes, how it ought to be served, the different ways it can be made, and the different recipes. So, let’s get started!

History of the Caribbean Mule

Although there’s plenty to love about the original Moscow Mule, variety is undeniably the spice of life. Thus, there is good reason to have a collection of recipes for your cocktails. With only a cabinet full of liquor from different parts of the world and a few basic ingredients, exploring with the Mule drink is like going on an adventure from the comfort of your home bar.

Because the original Mule was named to pay homage to where vodka came from, Russia, its variations have followed the same idea. The Caribbean Mule takes the spirit of the enchanting blue waters of the Caribbean islands, combined with conventional ginger beer.

With the Caribbean Mule, you can choose to use spiced rum, white rum, pineapple-flavored rum, or even coconut rum. The sweetness of the drink is livened up by the ginger flavors.

Caribbean Mule Ingredients

The ingredients in this variation are:

  • Rum – To achieve the best flavor, choose a premium quality rum.
  • Lime juice – Fresh lime juice balances out the sweetness and adds a tangy flavor.
  • Simple syrup – This can be made at home and is comprised of water, granulated sugar and, if you want to add a greater ginger kick, fresh slices of ginger.
  • Ginger beer – Choose a high-quality beer for the best results.
  • Ice – Use small crushed ice for heightened sensation and guaranteed chilling while drinking.

Which Rum Should You Use for your Caribbean Mule?

Spiced rum brings a comforting, warm feel that’s perfect during fall. When paired with ginger beer, the result is an extra sweetness and spice perfect for those cozy, cold nights or for entertaining your guests. Even when it comes to mixed drinks, you should always ensure you buy quality spiced rum. Preferably, use one with a medium to heavy texture. The flavors of the rum come out and help even out the ginger beer and simple syrup.

You can also choose to use Red Leg rum. Red Leg spiced rum comes from the makers of Blavod, a premium vodka. The name is inspired by the red legged hermit crab that is indigenous to the coral reefs found in the Caribbean. The rum is infused with vanilla and ginger  and then rested in oak casks to marry all the spicy flavors.

The Easy Caribbean Mule Cocktail

copper mug filled with crushed ice ginger slices and mint leaves placed on a wooden plate

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz spiced rum
  • 2 small pieces of fresh ginger
  • 4 oz ginger beer
  • ¼ oz homemade ginger simple syrup
  • ¼ oz lime juice

Instructions:

  • Muddle the fresh ginger.
  • In a cocktail mixer, add the simple syrup, spiced rum, and lime juice and shake well.
  • Strain, then add ginger beer to create that absolutely delicious spicy cocktail.

Pirate Inspired Caribbean Mule

This cocktail will transport you to the ocean blue waters of the dreamy Caribbean from wherever you are in the world.

  • ½ oz white rum
  • ½ oz gold rum
  • 1 oz coconut rum
  • Pineapple wedge
  • Mix all the rums.
  • Add ginger beer, then stir gently.
  • Serve in a classic copper mule mug over ice and garnish with the pineapple wedge.

The Kranks’ Caribbean Mule

copper mug filled with reddish liquid ice lime slice on its rim

This easy-to-make Caribbean style cocktail is one tasty treat. It draws its inspiration from a holiday favorite, ‘Christmas with the Kranks.’ In the movie, a couple whose kids are all grown up and have left home go merry-making on a Caribbean holiday cruise. This particular cocktail uses cranberry syrup, which gives the drink a distinctive twist.

  • 4 fresh cranberries chopped
  • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary
  • 12 oz ginger beer
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 2 slices lime
  • Ice as needed
  • Put the water, sugar, and chopped cranberries in a saucepan and cook over very low heat.
  • Stir frequently until the cranberries are completely soft.
  • Use a fine-mesh sieve to strain the mixture. Press the pulp gently to extract the liquid.
  • Let the syrup cool for about 20 minutes at room temperature. Cover the syrup and put it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes before use.
  • Pour ½ oz of lime juice and 1 tablespoon of the cooled syrup into two Collins glasses or copper mugs.
  • Add ice, then pour rum and ginger beer in equal amounts and stir using a cocktail stirrer.
  • Garnish with cranberries, a lime wheel, and rosemary sprig.

Bright Caribbean Cocktail

This low-carb cocktail is bright enough to make you forget a chilly and dull day outside your window. It’s also perfect for weekend entertaining. Besides, you get to enjoy all the goodness of a low-carb  drink which lets you indulge while also helping you in the weight management department!

  • 1 1/8-inch slice of fresh ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon of pineapple coconut water enhancer
  • 4 oz sugar-free ginger beer
  • 1 oz pineapple rum
  • Frozen cranberries
  • 1/2 oz lime juice
  • 2 oz club soda
  • Muddle the ginger in the bottom of your cocktail mixer.
  • Fill with ice.
  • Add all the rum, water enhancer, and lime juice. Shake well.
  • Put the mixture in a glass and add the club soda and ginger beer
  • Garnish using the frozen cranberries and serve immediately.

The result is a sparkly cocktail that is ideal for weekend sipping. If you prefer your drinks a little sweeter and a bit heavier, then add more ginger beer.

Ginger Peach Fizz

clear glass cup filled with yellow liquid ice and mint leaves

The dark rum used has a flavor that perfectly complements the peaches  in this utterly amazing cocktail.

  • 1 ½ oz dark rum
  • ¾ oz simple syrup
  • ¾ oz lime juice
  • 2 slices of peach
  • Muddle peach slices in a cocktail shaker.
  • Add ice, lime juice, rum, and simple syrup, then shake.
  • Strain mixture in a highball glass and top with ice.
  • Fill the glass with ginger beer and stir.
  • Use the mint sprig to garnish.

Which One Should You Use: Ginger Beer or Ginger Ale?

Although it’s possible to use ginger ale instead of ginger beer in your Caribbean Mule cocktails, you won’t achieve the depth of ginger flavor, which is what makes ginger beer such a great mixer. Ginger beer is actually fermented and has a sharper, more pronounced ginger flavor and almost .05 percent alcohol. Besides, it’s less carbonated compared to ginger ale .

Making Homemade Simple Syrup

Simple syrup is a mixture of sugar and water that’s dissolved and then cooled. The ideal ratio should be 1:1.

To make a ginger simple syrup, you should mix a few fresh slices of ginger with water and sugar and put it in a small saucepan. Then, place it over medium heat and cook for about 5 minutes. Once the sugar has dissolved, remove from the heat and allow to cool.

Should You Make Your Own Simple Syrup or Use A Store-Bought One?

Even if you're a novice, making your own homemade spiced Caribbean Mule with your own simple syrup is very easy. The advantage of making your own is you can control the sweetness and flavor when cooking. For instance, adding extra ginger will give your drink more punch. On the other hand, if you need a faster drink, then store-bought simple syrup is your best bet. However, it will not have as much ginger flavor.

Get Creative

Does the idea of rum and ginger beer sound fascinating? Rather than just following a specific recipe, take a tall glass and fill it with ice to the brim. Next, pour a shot of rum or two. Add ginger beer to the ice and rum until you find the balance that perfectly suits your palate.

It’s Always a Good Time

With these delicious and refreshing recipes, you can rest assured that these cocktails will excite any palate. The drinks are meant to be sweet but not overly sweet, and the alcohol contents, although generously poured, can still be subtle depending on what you like.

Cocktails are more than simply drinks. They make friends out of strangers and bring people together. So, sit back, relax, and have a good time with any of these amazing recipes.

This location has changed personality over the years. Recently, they found a new identity in their version of Italian Bistro meets American bar. The service was enthusiastic and very pleasant. The food is solid and well prepared. The overall vibe is relaxed and open. The appetizer (California Beets) was well executed. The portions are very generous(Very). The entrees were prepared with care. I ordered the seafood Alfredo which did not disappoint. Shrimp were perfect, as were the scallops. Most Alfredo's are over sauced. Blue Lagoon had a nice light Alfredo sauces which allowed the other components of the dish to shine. I will need a good nap after this feast. I look forward to the future evolution of this neighborhood Italian/American bistro as a welcome establishment to Owings Mills.

The food is fantastic! The service is almost non-existent. There were several waitstaff just standing around. Our waitress kept avoiding making eye contact with us. We went there on a Monday night and the place was empty. Had a great meal and were sitting around chatting for a bit. Around 6:30 the music started. It was so loud we could no longer hear each other. We had to track our waitress down to get the check. Good thing we had cash because she never came back. Next time, we'll do carry out!

This is definitely the spot for Sunday football. The Ravens played at 1pm and television screens were adequately sized. Lol. Nelson was our bartender and server. Unfortunately, he was the only person serving so many people, but he held everything down. Everyone was very patient. Nelson made excellent drinks, was attentive to the patrons, and ensured that all of our food orders were in correctly. It was cool that they had brunch specials and unlimited mimosas with the purchase of an entree. I ordered the Americano and an extra side of sausage. This meal comes with waffles, bacon, and two eggs. Bay-Bee.....let me tell you about the bacon. That thing was cooked to perfection; hard and crispy. There was so much food. My food lasted me three meals. The bar crowd and environment is not a quiet one and I love it. People come there to watch football, talk trash, and laugh with strangers.

Had a great time having lunch here with a friend. Totally rebranded by way of menu, drinks and ambiance but the interior set up is the same. Food was pretty good. I had calamari and cheese steak egg rolls. Loved them both. We were served by Nelson and David. Great service and very attentive. Drinks were just right and the staff was friendly and our order was accurate and food came out quickly. Restaurant appeared clean and bathroom was well maintained. Music was pretty cute with a juke box that had current hits for anyone that wanted to listen. Restaurant also played old school R&B music. Parking was easy as the restaurant is located in a shopping center. Had a good time and will return.

The portions are smaller the salad and bread stick are definitely not what I was accustomed to when Olive Branch was the owner . But the food is still good but need to change the salad and breadsticks back to the way they were .

Visited this place since having changed hands from another establishment. Overall experience didn't disappoint one bit! Upon entering, either they'd just opened or we were just lucky, but the place was empty. This didn't deter us as we both had had a difficult day The room was a widely open, with several tables covered in white cloths. Lights low, but not too low (hubs didn't need to use his white cane), and seemed very clean. As there was no one else present, we were welcomed and sat immediately. Our server (I hate I didn't get her name) was extremely sweet and friendly. We asked about happy hour and were provided this menu (pictured) and the dinner drink (not pictured) menu. I initially ordered off the the regular menu one of my favorites (lemon drop martini), however, was encouraged to review the happy hour menu ( which turned out to be a better option, as for what I would've paid for one, I got two with the happy hour choice). Food choices were decent, "bar" options and turned out to be very good as we were advised everything was made fresh and from scratch. The only "issue" I had was hubs requested cheesesteak egg rolls and instead of notifying us they were out, we were brought out cheesesteak quesadillas. Although hubs typically isn't a fan, he acknowledged it was a good choice and ate all of it. My pizza was delightful as it was full of flavor, fresh, and plentiful. The drinks were good, rail, but good. I had the peach margarita and later the mango. I prefer mango over the peach as it had more mango flavoring than the peach. Oh, and they don't rim the glass with salt. This isn't an issue for me, but hubs is a saltaholic All in all, we had a good experience. The wall length screen in the corner was a good touch and could easily be viewed from almost every angle of the restaurant. The best part of the experience is for everything we ordered including the tip (which is added in) came to $41. What a win! And we will be back!

Ok. I've been here twice in the past four weeks. Both times for happy hour. The first visit was for a few, three crushes. They were made very well! Fresh squeezed oranges into a nice crush, each was similar and tasty. The second visit, a Wednesday around 4:30 was different. The bartender seemed to either be bothered to serve us or was annoyed that he needed to wait on us. We had beers which were good and also wings, which were fairly well cooked. Good flavor. Service wasn't great last visit but very, it's Reisterstown at 4:30!? And NOTE.. they include a 15% tip in the check - at least at the bar. Both times. I miss the old Playoff - better atmosphere and drinks, that was a fun place we're sorely missing!

Photo of Tonja H.

Newest changeover in our area but wasn't disappointed at all! We sat at the bar and it was a busy day but James was quite flexible with all the people wanting his attention. I had the wings and my buddy had the pizza. If you have to choose something the pizza is by far the best here. I say this as the crust itself was baked just right with the right amount of crispness. All the veggies were super fresh and that made it even better. The wings were just that WINGS. They did cook them to my liking but other than that I was satisfied. Next time I venture here I will try a few other things on the menu.

Excellent food, fabulous service. Elizabeth was AMAZING. Only complaint is the music could loud but they did lower it on request. So much food we have lunch tomorrow all set! We WILL be back.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

By shuguley , February 15, 2014 in Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Recommended Posts

Cool Cruiser

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

5,000+ Club

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

Driver of electric Ford SUV was using automated system before fatal Texas crash, investigators say

DETROIT (AP) — The driver of a Ford electric SUV involved in a February fatal crash in Texas was using the company’s partially automated driving system before the wreck, federal investigators said Thursday.

Data from the 2022 Mustang Mach E SUV showed that Ford’s “Blue Cruise” driver-assist system was in use ahead of the Feb. 24 crash, according to a preliminary report released Thursday by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The crash is one of two recent fatal wrecks involving Ford Mustang Mach Es that are under investigation by the NTSB and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which often send teams to probe incidents involving automated technology.

The NTSB can only make recommendations, but NHTSA has the authority to take action including seeking recalls for safety issues.

In both cases, the Mach Es hit vehicles stopped on freeways at night, and neither the driver nor the system were able to prevent the collisions. Ford says on its website that its driving systems do not replace human drivers, who have to be ready to take control at any time.

A company spokeswoman wouldn’t comment on the NTSB report Thursday, deferring to a previous statement saying that Ford is cooperating in the investigations.

(Yi-Chin Lee/Houston Chronicle via AP, File)

The Texas crash occurred on Interstate 10 in San Antonio. The NTSB report says the Mach E struck the rear of a 1999 Honda CR-V that was stopped in the middle of three lanes around 9:50 p.m. The 56-year-old driver of the CR-V was killed.

Another driver who was able to avoid the CR-V told investigators that neither its tail nor hazard lights were working at the time.

The agency said it intends to issue safety recommendations to prevent similar crashes. It has said it opened the probe due to continued interest in advanced driver assistance systems and how vehicle operators interact with the new technology.

The other crash involving a Mach E killed two people around 3:20 a.m. March 3 in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia.

The Pennsylvania State Police said Thursday that a Mach E was in the left lane when it struck a stationary Hyundai Elantra that earlier had collided with a Toyota Prius.

The Mach E hit the Hyundai, pushing it into the rear of the Prius. During the crash, the driver of the Prius, who was outside of his vehicle, also was struck and thrown into the southbound lanes, the release said.

A police spokeswoman said a person from the Hyundai also was on the roadway and was hit. Both victims, males ages 21 and 20, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A police news release on the crash says a criminal investigation is under way and a charge of homicide by motor vehicle while driving under the influence is possible against the 23-year-old woman driving the Mach E.

Ford’s Blue Cruise system allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel while it handles steering, braking and acceleration on highways. The company says the system isn’t fully autonomous and it monitors drivers to make sure they pay attention to the road. It operates on 97% of controlled access highways in the U.S. and Canada, Ford says.

There are no fully autonomous vehicles for sale to the public in the U.S.

Both NHTSA and the NTSB have investigated multiple previous crashes involving partially automated driving systems, most involving Tesla’s Autopilot. In past investigations, the NTSB has examined how the system functioned.
