Given the lo-fi and intimate nature characterizing the music of Bright Eyes one might wonder how they can deliver an hour and half set without tiring the audience. This is truly a naive misconception. Their live performances are delivered with such potent emotional resonance and directness that the audience is left begging for more. At the Atlanta Tabernacle show during "The People's Key Tour" some fans were so ecstatic after the performance they nearly did a flip over the railing to grab a setlist.

The music of Bright Eyes also goes so much further than the lo-fi folk stigma attached to them. They have proven themselves to be dextrous and eclectic musicians crossing in to several disparate genres. "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn" saw them channeling the synth-pop and dark wave sound championed by their contemporaries and fellow label mates The Faint. After all Conor Oberst was in the band Commander Venus with the group's lead singer Todd Fink well before the existence of either one of their current bands. Their 2007 album Casadaga takes a completely different approach stylistically to "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn" and a turn production wise comparative to their early recordings. It is a lush Country album filled with well defined instrumentation, but juxtaposed by Oberst's signature cutting lyrics. The setlist of a Bright Eyes show is sure to have the stripped down folk ballads written on the hearts of every diehard fan, but it is not lacking in the "more fun" nevertheless sardonic pop hits like "Four Winds" and "Lover I Don't Have to Love".

Though the genre of emo has been triumphed, abused and often rejected by the very people to whom it was first applied, it seems without a doubt appropriately attributed to the music of Bright Eyes. These "emo" shows are particularly enjoyable to go to because the entire audience seems to mutually offer their souls as a sacrifice to the performing band. Practically the whole venue knew all the lyrics at the Bright Eyes show I was attending and some of the fans were so emotionally invested in the performance they started to tear their hair out during the song "Road to Joy".

Despite presiding stigmas attached to bands such as Bright Eyes it is safe to say there are no dull moments at their shows. Judging from their lyrics they may seem like a band who take themselves too serious, but these preconceived notions vanish upon seeing them. Oberst is constantly cracking jokes and engages the audience in witty banter. Band members Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott have their performance down to a science playing with amazing precision and feeling, making for an unforgettable show.

On their last tour, in support of 2011’s The People’s Key, Bright Eyes threw out their old rulebook; where previously they’d stick closely to new material and throw in the odd oldie here and there, they suddenly blew their formidable back catalogue wide open. With the core trio of Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott expanded to a seven-piece, they tore through sets that blended The People’s Key highlights with more or less equal representation for their genuinely classic albums; the moody Fevers and Mirrors, experimental Lifted and magnum opus I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning all present and correct.

As a frontman, Oberst continued to display real versatility, howling his way through ‘Road to Joy’ one minute and delivering a broken, barely-there exercise in poignancy on ‘Lua’ the next, whilst the live band - drawn largely form the Omaha music scene that considers Bright Eyes the jewel in its crown - provided stirring and diverse backing, with horns, keyboards and strings all covered in one form or another. It’s little wonder, then, that Oberst would routinely take anything up to fifteen minutes to introduce his fellow players during an extended, funk-driven jam, with some shows running only a little shy of three hours.

Bright Eyes Announce 2022 Tour Dates

Bright Eyes Announce 2022 Tour Dates

Indie rockers Bright Eyes have announced plans for a 2022 U.S. tour beginning March 23 in St. Paul, Minn. The news, which was shared via press release today, follows the band’s nine-year hiatus, which concluded in 2020 with the release of Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was .

The trio, consisting of Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis and Nathaniel Walcott, will hit the road this spring, weaving their way through the American midwest before performing a string of shows in the northeast. Finally, Bright Eyes will close out their tour in Norfolk, Va., on April 10.

The 13-stop tour will feature performances from Bright Eye’s extensive catalog of music, emphasizing the band’s tenth studio album, Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was, which was released in Aug. 2020 via Dead Oceans.

Tickets go on sale Friday, Dec. 10 at 10 a.m. local time.

Check out Bright Eye’s recent cover of Vic Chestnutt’s “Flirted With You All My Life,” here .

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Solar eclipse, worried about eclipse damage to your eyes don't panic.

Tens of millions of Americans will have spent the day staring at a total solar eclipse, and at least a few of them may become worried that they inadvertently damaged their eyes.

But experts say there's no need to panic — the vast majority of eclipse viewers are probably fine. And even if somebody did strain their eyes, the effects could be temporary.

During the 2017 total solar eclipse it's estimated that 150 million Americans viewed the event. There were around 100 documented cases of eye damage across all of America and Canada, according to Ralph Chou, an expert on eclipse eye safety with the University of Waterloo in Canada.

Far more people turned up in emergency rooms worried that they'd damaged their eyes. Many complained of watery eyes or blurred vision, but in most cases they were fine, according to Avnish Deobhakta, an ophthalmologist at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, one of the largest eye hospitals in the nation.

The reason it's hard to do real damage is simple — the human eye has evolved to avoid staring directly at the sun.

"It's so bright that we're not actually capable of looking at it without either tearing or sort of not really feeling comfortable staring at this ball of light," Deobhakta says.

Here's What It Looks Like When You Fry Your Eye In An Eclipse

Shots - Health News

Here's what it looks like when you fry your eye in an eclipse.

In the rare case that someone does damage their eyes, that damage usually shows up as a blurry spot in the field of vision , hours or up to a day after watching the eclipse. In about half of cases, the problem fixes itself, but permanent damage can sometimes occur.

Anticipating the post-eclipse ocular anxiety, at least one eye clinic in Buffalo, N.Y., is offering free eye checks immediately after the eclipse on April 8.

It's always a good idea to get your eyes checked, whether or not there's an eclipse. So if you're worried at all, go ahead and use the opportunity to schedule your annual exam.

Hospitals around the US were inundated with people arriving at their emergency departments to see if they had sustained eye damage as a result of watching the eclipse .

Doctors across the country also reported a huge volume of calls requesting information about the possible long-term effects of having stared at the eclipse . One doctor told the Guardian: “If you can’t read this piece, then ... ”

(Turn around.) Every now and then I get a little bit lonely. And you’re never coming ’round. (Turn around.) Every now and then I get a little bit tired of listening to the sound of my tears. (Turn around.) Every now and then I get a little bit nervous that the best of all the years have gone by. (Turn around.) Every now and then I get a little bit terrified. And then I see the look in your eyes.

(Turn around, bright eyes!) Every now and then I fall apart. (Turn around, bright eyes!) Every now and then I fall apart. (Turn around.) Every now and then I get a little bit restless. And I dream of something wild. (Turn around.)

Every now and then I get a little bit helpless. And I’m lying like a child in your arms (Turn around). Every now and then I get a little bit angry and I know I’ve got to get out and cry (Turn around). Every now and then I get a little bit terrified But then I see the look in your eyes.

(Turn around, bright eyes!) Every now and then I fall apart.

And I need you now tonight. And I need you more than ever. And if you only hold me tight. We’ll be holding on forever. And we’ll only be making it right. Cause we’ll never be wrong together.

We first published an iteration of this joke 21 August 2017. We have republished it to both celebrate and warn of the possible dangers of the 8 April 2024 solar eclipse.
