• Even though there are only a few travel insurance providers that cover business travel, the Post Office’s policy will provide coverage for business travel that can greatly help professionals abroad. This policy will provide coverage for emergency couriers, employee replacement, equipment hire, computer equipment, and business money. This is only optional.
• Not all optional cover types can be added to every policy type. Only the Cruise cover is applicable for the Premier and Premier Plus policies. Meanwhile, the Golf and Business cover is only applicable to Standard, Premier, and Premier Plus.
• Various holiday activities and sports will be covered by the Post Office under the Standard policy. However, riskier activities like sailing and jet skiing won’t be covered for any personal accident claims.

Are there any special policy rules for pregnant women who travel?

There are certain limitations for pregnant women who want to travel.

In line with the Complications of Pregnancy and Childbirth policy, coverage for pregnant women will only include the following:

Are REAL IDs mandatory in NC? Are REAL IDs different than driver's licenses? What to know

Starting May 7, 2025, you'll need a United States passport, REAL ID or other federally approved identification in order to board any commercial flight and enter secure federal buildings.

You won't need a REAL ID to drive, vote, apply for or receive federal benefits, enter a federal facility that does not require an ID such as a post office, access a hospital or receive life-saving services or participate in law enforcement proceedings or investigations such as serving on a jury or testifying in court.

However, there are plenty of reasons why you might still want a REAL ID. Here's what to know about why you might need a REAL ID, where to get one, whether to sign up now and more.

What is a REAL ID?

The NC REAL ID is a REAL ID Act-compliant driver license. It is essentially the same as a traditional license or ID, but has a star at the top. Driver licenses and IDs without a gold star are now noted "Not for Federal Identification."

What is the purpose of NC REAL ID?

Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005 to establish enhanced security standards in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The REAL ID Act will be federally enforced starting on May 7, 2025, and will require a REAL ID, U.S. passport or another federally approved identification to board commercial flights and enter secure federal buildings.

How to get a REAL ID: What do I need for a REAL ID in NC?

The requirements for REAL IDs are similar to standard licensing requirements. To be issued a REAL ID, you'll need to go into a driver license office with the following documents:

• One document with your full name proving identity and date of birth.
• ​​One document with your full name and full Social Security Number confirming Social Security number.
• Two documents with current physical address proving North Carolina residency​.
• One document proving liability insurance coverage from a provider licensed to do business in North Carolina (not required for a learner's permit).
• If applicable, one or more documents verifying any name change.
• ​For non-U.S. citizens, one document with your full name proving legal presence/lawful status.

What does a NC REAL ID cost?

There is no added fee for an NC REAL ID license or ID card. The cost is the same as a standard driver license or ID card; $5.50 for all non-commercial licenses.

The cost is the same as a renewal if you get a REAL ID within six months of expiration. If you get it outside the renewal period, the cost is the same as a duplicate, $14.

Can I use a REAL ID instead of a passport? Do I need a REAL ID if I have a passport?

In certain areas, a REAL ID can be used instead of a passport. Starting May 7, 2025, you'll need either a REAL ID or another form of federally approved documentation (such as a passport) in order to fly domestically and enter federal facilities.

For international travel, however, you'll still need a passport. A REAL ID does not replace a passport for international flights, international sea cruise travel or any other travel involving crossing the U.S. border into another country.

Is REAL ID mandatory in NC?

NC REAL ID licenses and ID cards are completely optional. However, when enforcement of the REAL ID Act begins on May 7, 2025, you may want an NC REAL ID if you fly frequently or regularly visit:

• Military bases
• Nuclear sites
• Federal prisons
• Federal courthouses
• Other federal facilities

While it won't be necessary to have a REAL ID in order to fly or enter these facilities, you'll need to provide additional identification along with your standard license or ID every time.

Can I get a REAL ID online?

You can't get your first NC REAL ID cannot be online. You'll need to go to a​​ ​driver license office, where the required documents listed above will be scanned and permanently stored in your NCDMV record.

You can, however, renew your NC REAL ID online after you're issued one, as you would with a normal driver license.

Top Education Department official steps down amid crisis over college financial aid

Richard cordray, the official in charge of the free application for federal student aid, or fafsa, will step down at the end of june, the education department said friday..

The top Biden administration official overseeing federal college financial aid will depart his role this summer, the Education Department said Friday, capping off a year of turmoil for students and universities. 

Richard Cordray, the chief operating officer for Federal Student Aid, will step down at the end of June, officials said. The former head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Cordray faced mounting criticism from congressional Republicans to leave his post amid calamitous delays in the college financial aid process.

In a statement to USA TODAY, Cordray did not comment on the FAFSA problems. He said his office has achieved key milestones in his three-year term. He has agreed to stay on during an interim transition period.

"Over my tenure, we provided student loan forgiveness to more than 4,000,000 borrowers and their families; made it easier for people to apply for and manage federal student aid; and took strong actions to hold schools accountable for defrauding students," Cordray said.

Cordray's departure comes as scores of high school seniors across the country await aid offers they typically would have received by now. Repeated glitches and errors in the rollout of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, truncated the decision-making timelines for hundreds of thousands of students. College officials have scrambled to get aid offers out the door, sometimes using inaccurate information to make crucial calculations about how much families should expect to pay for college in the fall.

"This is the worst time for a change in management and leadership to happen," said Brittani Williams, a former financial aid counselor and outreach coordinator for Louisiana. Williams, who oversees advocacy, policy and research for the organization Generation Hope, said the change could exacerbate the turmoil and students' distrust in the financial aid system. "This crisis will turn away students from matriculating."

The FAFSA blunders haven’t let up. Now the Education Department has a credibility issue.

At a congressional hearing this month, a panel of experts said the problem with the FAFSA had reached crisis levels and could trigger a drop in college enrollment.

“If there was a financial aid director, or even a college president, that delayed financial aid on their campus for up to six months, the professional price that would be paid for that would be pretty steep,” Justin Draeger, president of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, said during the hearing. 

Congress mandated that the form be simplified, a bipartisan effort that Republicans and Democrats agreed was long overdue. But the Education Department's implementation of the new FAFSA this year was beset with problems, eroding trust between the federal government, higher education institutions, students and their families.

Cordray was at the forefront. His most recent publicly available performance contract indicated that his top priority on the job was implementing the new FAFSA. Republicans, and some former Education Department officials, say he lost sight of that goal and focused too much on student loan relief efforts instead.

Officials in jobs like Cordray's are appointed to fixed terms, and his tenure was slated to come to an end soon if it wasn't renewed. Arthur Wayne Johnson, who served in the gig during the Trump administration and is now running for Congress, said he was glad to see a change at the top, given the recent turmoil.

"They’ve got a serious leadership question now," he said.

Michelle Dimino, director of education at the moderate think tank Third Way, noted the scrutiny the Education Department has faced from Congress. "Congress has made no secret of the fact that they are furious, and the Department also needs Congress to fund them adequately," she said. "A major personnel change like this can be a natural step to reset that dynamic."

Clare McCann, the higher education director at the research philanthropy group Arnold Ventures and a former Education Department adviser, said the agency has struggled with turnover. She's concerned about the implications of another transition and appreciates that Cordray will remain in his post while the administration looks for a replacement with "the skills and background to do what is an incredibly complicated job."

In a statement Friday, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona praised Cordray for "fixing the broken student loan system." He did not specifically mention Cordray's role in the FAFSA rollout.

"It's no exaggeration to say that Rich helped change millions of lives for the better," Cardona said.

Laura Perna, an expert in college access and affordability at the University of Pennsylvania, said Cordray's departure shows how problematic the FAFSA delays have been. "This, clearly, is a big failure, and from the perspective of the individual student, the counselor, the parent, the college access organizations ... the system broke," she said.

But Perna is not sure a new COO would rectify the situation.

If you're going away more than once in a year, it's worth considering annual multi-trip travel insurance. Taking out this cover means you can travel without the worry, or the hassle, of getting cover every time you go.

Please note there’s a limit to the length of time you can spend away on any individual trip. All Post Office Travel insurance policies cover you up to a maximum of 31 days. If you’re going to be away for longer, you can add our trip extension cover. This gives you an extended protection of 45 or 60 days, for an additional premium.

Medical Assistance Plus (2), powered by Air Doctor, comes free with all our travel insurance policies. It gives you access to outpatient medical support while you’re away.

Through the service you can book an in-person or video consultation with a doctor. You can also get prescriptions delivered to your nearest pharmacy.

We’ll send you an SMS reminder about the service the day before you travel (for single-trip and backpacker cover) or the day before your policy begins (for annual multi-trip cover).

Kids covered for free

If you buy a family annual multi-trip travel insurance policy, your children aged under 18 will be covered at no extra cost. All you have to do is name them on the policy, and confirm that they have no medical conditions. They’ll be covered even if they’re invited on holiday with another adult, such as a friend or relative

Emergency medical expenses

We may be able to help if you need emergency medical treatment, return to the UK and more while you’re abroad

Delayed departure (3)

You’re covered if your first outbound or final inbound international departure is delayed by 4 or more hours. As long as it matches certain reasons set out in the policy wording

Items that are usually carried or worn during a trip are covered if they get lost, stolen or damaged

Personal liability and legal costs

We also include protection for any unexpected personal liability and legal costs you might be charged while you're away

Specialist cover is mandatory for winter sports like skiing and snowboarding. There’s greater risk of emergency costs. Make sure you’re protected on the pistes (5)

If you're going on a cruise, specialist cover is both important and mandatory. It covers missed departure due to breakdown, falling ill on board, being confined to your cabin, lost baggage and more (5)

Trip extensions are available up to 45 or 60 days, increasing from the standard 31 days (5)

Common questions

Does annual multi-trip travel insurance cover covid-19.

Policies purchased from 28 March 2024 onwards provide cover if:

• You test positive for Covid-19 within 14 days of your trip and are required to self-isolate by a medical practitioner, the NHS or any UK government body
• A medical practitioner certifies you as too ill to travel due to Covid-19
• You, someone you’re travelling with, or someone you’re staying with is required to self-isolate by a medical practitioner, UK government body or health authority
• You, an immediate relative (6) or someone you plan to travel or stay with dies or is hospitalised due to Covid-19

If an insured trip has to be cut short, the unused portion of it can be claimed for if:

• You, an immediate relative (6), or someone you’re travelling or staying with dies or is hospitalised due to Covid-19

There’s also cover for medical and repatriation costs if you fall ill with Covid-19 while away. Call our emergency assistance line and we’ll help you seek treatment. If needed, we can also arrange to bring you back to the UK.

There’s no other coronavirus cover on our policies, but for extra reassurance you can add our trip disruption cover upgrade option. This gives you added protection against missed departures and expenses charged due to change of testing or quarantine requirements. Add it to your preferred policy for an extra premium.

Should the FCDO advise against all travel to your destination, there’s no cover under any section of the policy if you decide to travel.

It’s important to follow FCDO advice on essential travel. If you choose to travel and the trip’s not essential, we’ll only cover a claim if the cause isn’t linked to the reason for the FCDO advice. This limitation applies even if you’ve purchased an optional trip disruption upgrade. You may be able to travel with full cover if we authorise, in writing, that your trip’s essential before you travel. To request this, please email  [email protected] .

What is annual multi-trip travel insurance?

This is a type of policy that covers you for multiple trips within one year.

This is good for people who travel frequently and don’t want the expense of buying a new policy for each journey they take. Remember that if you travel to different parts of the world with each trip, you will need a policy that covers all of the areas you travel to.

All our policies have a maximum 31-day trip duration limit. This can be extended up to 45 or 60 days for an additional premium.

What different cover levels are there for annual multi-trip travel insurance?

Post Office offers three levels of travel insurance. These are economy, standard and premier.

Why buy annual travel insurance rather than single-trip travel insurance?

Buying an annual multi-trip travel insurance policy may not be cheaper outright than a single-trip travel insurance policy. However, multi-trip insurance allows you to take as many trips as you like within the 365-period of the policy. You can take these trips in both the UK and overseas. So it can be more cost-effective and work out cheaper in the long run.

Whether you’re popping abroad to watch the football, fancy a weekend shopping trip to Paris or are taking a two-week family holiday, if you expect to travel more than once in a year, it’s worth considering multi-trip cover.

When does annual travel insurance start?

The start date can be up to 31 days in advance. If you have a pre-booked trip and need cancellation cover, make the start of your policy the date you take it out, not the date your trip starts.

The period of insurance is for 12 months. In that time you’re covered for each trip you book and undertake within that period, up to the maximum trip duration for your chosen policy.

Can you cancel annual travel insurance?

You can cancel your policy within 14 days of receiving your insurance documents. But you can only cancel if you’ve not started a trip, made a claim or intend to make a claim. If you meet these criteria, we’ll give you a full refund.

If you cancel after the 14-day cooling-off period, you won’t qualify for a refund. For annual multi-trip policies, the cancellation period is extended up to the start date of the policy, even if this is more than 14 days from the date you received your documents.

However, we’ll consider any exceptional events that may allow us to repay you for any unused cover. These include bereavement, or an unexpected change to your policy that means we’re no longer able to carry on insuring you.

The unused premium will be calculated on a sliding scale. You can find more information on this in your policy wording.

Is there a discount for students?

Yes, there is. We’ve partnered with Student Beans to offer a student discount. To claim it simply log in with your Student Beans account . If you don’t have one, you’ll need to register for a Student Beans account and verify you’re a student first. You’ll be given a unique code, which you’ll need to enter into the promotion box that appears when getting your travel insurance quote. The discount will be taken off your quote total.

Do you offer a discount for graduates?

Yes, we do. We’ve partnered with Grad Beans to offer a discount to graduates. To claim it, you’ll need to either register for a Grad Beans account (to verify your graduate status) or log in with your existing account . You’ll be given a unique code, which you’ll need to enter in the promotion code box that appears when getting your travel insurance quote. The discount will be taken off your quote total.

(1) Kids (under 18s) can be covered at no extra cost on our single-trip and annual multi-trip policies provided they have no medical conditions. They’re covered even if they’re invited on holiday with another adult – such as a friend or relative – while you’re away enjoying your own.

(2) Medical Assistance Plus is not available for trips taken in the UK, only for international travel. The service allows up to 3 separate medical events per person, per policy and for each medical event up to 3 appointments per person listed on the policy. All appointment charges are covered by your travel insurance policy. You will not need to pay any excess fees for this service. For any online appointments or where the appointment was held at your accommodation, where a prescription is issued, you will need to pay for any medication and claim upon your return home. No excess will be applied for any prescription charges. If your appointment takes place at a clinic and they have a dispensing chemist, you will not need to pay for your prescription and all charges will be covered by your policy at the point of appointment. If there is no dispensing chemist at the clinic, you will either be given a prescription, or the prescription will be sent to a chemist by the treating doctor, and you will need to pay for any medication and claim upon your return home. If your medical situation needs to be handed over from an outpatient case to an inpatient case and requires hospital admission, you will be handed over to our emergency medical assistance team in the UK. For any inpatient cases, no excess will be applicable.

(3) Missed departure is available with on our standard and premier cover levels.

(4) Increased to £750 if you bought your foreign currency from Post Office.

(6) Immediate relative: your mother, father, sister, brother, spouse, civil partner, fiancé/e, your children (including adopted and fostered), grandparent, grandchild, parent-in-law, daughter-in-law; sister-in-law, son-in-law, brother-in-law, aunt, uncle, cousin, nephew, niece, step-parent, step-child, step-brother, step-sister or legal guardian.

(7) For economy, standard and premier policies, the single-trip policy will cover you for one trip up to:

365 days for those aged up to and including 70 years

90 days for those aged between 71 and 75

31 days for those aged 76 years and above
