Buddy Guy: Damn Right Farewell

Event Details
At age 86, Buddy Guy is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and a living link to the city’s halcyon days of electric blues. Buddy Guy has received 8 GRAMMY Awards, a 2015 Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY Award, 38 Blues Music Awards (the most any artist has received), the Billboard Magazine Century Award for distinguished artistic achievement, a Kennedy Center Honor, and the Presidential National Medal of Arts. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked him #23 in its "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."
In 2019, Buddy Guy won his 8th and most recent GRAMMY Award for his 18th solo LP, “The Blues Is
Alive And Well.” In July of 2021, in honor of Buddy Guy’s 85th birthday, PBS American Masters released “Buddy Guy: The Blues Chase The Blues Away,” a new documentary following his rise from a childhood spent picking cotton in Louisiana to becoming one of the most influential guitar players of all time. The documentary features new interviews with Buddy Guy, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Gary Clark Jr, and more. Watch the full documentary at PBS Online here .
Though Buddy Guy will forever be associated with Chicago, his story actually begins in Louisiana. One of five children, he was born in 1936 to a sharecropper’s family and raised on a plantation near the small town of Lettsworth, located some 140 miles northwest of New Orleans. Buddy was just seven years old when he fashioned his first makeshift “guitar”—a two-string contraption attached to a piece of wood and secured with his mother’s hairpins.
In 1957, he took his guitar to Chicago, where he would permanently alter the direction of the instrument, first on numerous sessions for Chess Records playing alongside Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and the rest of the label’s legendary roster, and then on recordings of his own. His incendiary style left its mark on guitarists from Jimmy Page to John Mayer. “He was for me what Elvis was probably like for other people,” said Eric Clapton at Guy’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2005. “My course was set, and he was my pilot.”
Seven years later, July 2012 proved to be one of Buddy Guy’s most remarkable years ever. He was awarded the 2012 Kennedy Center Honor for his lifetime contribution to American culture; earlier in the year, at a performance at the White House, he even persuaded President Obama to join him on a chorus of “Sweet Home Chicago.” Also in 2012, he published his long-awaited memoir, When I Left Home.
These many years later, Buddy Guy remains a genuine American treasure and one of the final surviving connections to an historic era in the country’s musical evolution.

Kelly Clarkson Throws Up the ‘W,’ Crushes Kellyoke Version Of ‘Say It Ain’t So’ With Weezer
Kelly could not stop laughing with delight at what she called her favorite sit-down ever on the show.

Kelly Clarkson is basically in Weezer now. On Wednesday’s (May 15) Kelly Clarkson Show , the singer joined the group’s singer, Rivers Cuomo, and drummer Patrick Wilson (on guitar) for a run through “Say It Ain’t So” from the band’s iconic self-titled “Blue” album. Cuomo and Wilson loved their stop-in so much, they tweeted that “@kellyclarkson gave us a run for our money on Kellyoke.”
Weezer Teaming With Flaming Lips, Dinosaur Jr. For ‘Voyage to the Blue Planet’ 2024 North American…
Trending on billboard.
The Kellyoke performance opened with Rivers crooning the song’s mellow first verse, with Clarkson joining in on the “ooh yeah… all right” refrain before slathering the second verse with her buttery soul. “Flip on the telly/ Wrestle with Jimmy/ Something is bubbling/ Behind my back/ The bottle is ready to blow,” she belted as Wilson and Cuomo cranked up the guitars and Clarkson joined the bespectacled rocker on the swoony chorus. The back-and-forth between Clarkson and Cuomo was indeed formidable and Rivers was not kidding when he said the show’s host added some serious spice to the performance.
“I’ve literally never been cool in my life until now,” gushed Clarkson afterwards, who came dressed to play with the cardigan-loving duo in her own brown cropped button-up sweater and jeans.
The duo also sat on the couch with Clarkson to discuss the album’s anniversary, but not before Kelly implored her audience to go see Weezer live on their Voyage to the Blue Planet tour with the Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. “You put on a hell of a show, I’m just saying,” Clarkson told them, recounting a gig she saw several years ago that blew her mind.
Fellow guest Brooke Shields also got emotional thinking about how much Weezer has meant to her, revealing that she was blasting their music on her way to the studio that morning. The 10-minute segment quickly went off the rails, with Clarkson laughing about their earlier rehearsals for the performance, where she feared her cranked-to-11 energy hilariously clashed with Cuomo and Wilson’s hovering-around-2 chill vibe.
“Yeah, here in Manhattan,” Cuomo said straight-faced, as the audience, and Shields, broke into bellowing laughter at the singer’s plainspoken geographical response. “I really wanna host a show with you,” Clarkson said as Shields covered her eyes and mouth while guffawing at the delightfully awkward exchange.
“Uh… should I continue?” Cuomo asked sheepishly to more face-covering giggles from Shields, who, not for nothing, noted that she was named after a babbling brook. Spoiler alert: Cuomo was actually named after three soccer players from the Italian and Brazilian teams who played in the 1970 World Cup. “So I thought we had something in common there too, but turns out no,” Clarkson said. “I’m an Aquarius,” Wilson interjected helpfully. Later, Cuomo and Shields also (kind of) bonded over both appearing in productions of Grease , as Clarkson could not stop enthusing about how much she was loving the chat.
“This is literally my favorite panel we’ve ever had,” Clarkson chortled as she fell off her couch in convulsive laughter at the end of the segment.

Buddy Guyâs mojo was working just fine at the Wilbur
A few minutes into his Monday night set at the Wilbur Theatre, the blues grandmaster Buddy Guy pulled one of his many gimmicks out of his bag of magic. While bending a note with his fretting hand, he tugged on his ear lobe with his picking hand, as though he were controlling the sound through his skin.
The electric guitar has been an extension of Guyâs still-lithe body almost all his life, since he first took up plucking a homemade, two-string diddley bow as a farmboy in Louisiana. At 87, heâs on an extended farewell tour that also takes him to the Chevalier Theatre in Medford on Wednesday.
He was about to âplay something so funky you can smell it,â he said with a mischievous grin that rarely left his face Monday. That song was the Willie Dixon classic âHoochie Coochie Man,â first recorded by the late Muddy Waters. One of the curiosities of Guyâs 70-year career is that, for all his fame, he has written only a couple of songs that have become part of the canon. Heâs more of an envoy of the Chicago blues style.
In a rambling 75-minute set, Guy led his superb band â guitarist Ric Hall, bassist Orlando Wright, young keyboardist Dan Souvigny, and drummer Tom Hambridge â through a gallery tour of blues pillars, among them John Lee Hookerâs âBoom Boom,â Dixonâs âI Just Want to Make Love to You,â and Slim Harpoâs âIâm a King Bee.â Hall stepped to center stage at one point and ripped through a few bars of âPurple Haze.â
Hambridge, who got his start in Boston in the 1980s as the frontman for T.H. and the Wreckage, opened the show with a brief set of his own songs, accompanied on electric piano by Souvigny. Standing at a tiny cocktail kit, he transformed his snare drum (and occasional raps on the microphone stand) into a full orchestra.
On âThe Fixer,â which he wrote for George Thorogood, Hambridge got the crowd to join him with appropriately placed finger snaps. Introducing another original, âThe Blues Been Mighty Good to Me,â he explained how he invited Allen Toussaint to duet with him on his 2018 album âThe Nola Sessions.â It would prove to be, he said, Toussaintâs last recording date.
As a producer, Hambridge has worked with the late B.B. King, Susan Tedeschi, Christone âKingfishâ Ingram, and many others. But his longest professional relationship has been with Guy.
Midway through his own set, Guy explained how Hambridge helped him write âSkin Deep,â the soulful title ballad to an album he released in 2008. âSkin deep/Underneath weâre all the same,â Guy sang softly. At his advanced age, heâs still attuned to dynamics: When he hushed the crowd with a faint falsetto or a few brushed notes, he was only setting them up for the next gale-force flurry.
Opening with âDamn Right, Iâve Got the Blues,â the title track to his 1991 comeback album, Guy set a playful tone with a few pelvic thrusts. His signature polka-dotted Stratocaster blended seamlessly with his polka-dotted dress shirt.
That bag of magic contained plenty of tricks. At one point, his left hand spidering across the strings, he played a run up the fretboard. Later, laying his guitar down, he tapped out the familiar chords of âSunshine of Your Loveâ with a drumstick.
And after ceding the stage during âGot My Mojo Workingâ to his guitar-playing son, Greg Guy, the man of the hour returned to the microphone as his band vamped its outro jam. Having already shed his instrument, Buddy Guy couldnât help himself. He played an air guitar.
