The largest of the three terminals in Cozumel, Puerta Maya has two main piers where up to 4 ships can dock. Puerta Maya also has a smaller pier used mainly for excursions and for tender boats when cruise ships anchor.

Puerta Maya is a wonderful open-air terminal. Many cruise travelers enjoy walking around to explore its shops, bars, grills, and restaurants, before or after a shore excursion. Or just enjoy a drink in the shade on the sandy relaxing area of the terminal. Even if you are not planning to discover any of the top highlights of the island, do not stay onboard and do go out to explore Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal.

The Puerta Maya Terminal is where most cruise lines owned by Carnival Corporation usually dock. If you cruise on lines like Carnival, Princess or Cunard this is, most probably, where your ship will dock. However, Holland America and Seabourn (also owned by Carnival Corporation) normally dock at Punta Langosta. Where is the Puerta Maya cruise terminal

Located on the West coast of the island of Cozumel, right in the middle, Puerta Maya is around x miles south of San Miguel (the main town of the island) which is easily and affordably accessible by taxi - more about taxis below. On the coast south of Puerta Maya, the cruise traveler will find most of the best beaches, beach clubs, hotels and resorts in Cozumel, all at a reasonable distance.

Besides shops, bars, grills, and restaurants, you will find all basic amenities and services in Puerta Maya: Wi-Fi and Phones, Restrooms, ATMs, Tourist Information, Car and Scooter Rental, Taxis. Within walking distance, there are also a couple of places that may be of interest, namely a couple of resorts offering day passes, two shopping centers and recently developed plaza with grills, coffee shops and souvenir shops.

Tourist Information Kiosk-Office

Cruisers that which to find more about Cozumel, that want to double check information or that would like to book a last minute shore excursion, will find a Tourist Information Kiosk centrally located at the terminal. This is also the best place to pick up a map.

Money Matters - Currency, ATM and Exchange Offices

There are a few ATMs around the open air terminal. All these ATMs dispense US$ dollars and are pretty much safe to use. Although the official currency and legal tender is the Mexican Peso (MXN), the US dollar is widely accepted absolutely everywhere. In very, very rare situations you may eventually get the change in pesos.

Pharmacies and Health Issues

The pharmacies of Cozumel are famous but in case of an emergency the island is also known for having a good hospital close to the Puerta Maya.

For other minor health issues, there a couple of Pharmacies in the Puerta Maya Terminal and also nearby outside the terminal within walking distance. In fact, the pharmacies in Mexico, and Cozumel, in particular, are famous for selling over the counter medication that elsewhere require prescriptions. Naturally, pharmacies take advantage of these and promote the sale of Amoxiline, Zpac, Viagra, Cialis among others.

Keep in Touch: Phones, Wi-Fi and Post Office.

Considering the prices of Wi-Fi Internet onboard cruise ships, you may want to take advantage of the fact that there are a few places to get free Wi-Fi in Puerta Maya.

Coconut Lounge Grill (Puerta Maya Terminal) - Cozumel

As phone providers in the US, Canada, and Europe have expanded international coverage, phone boots are a 'species in extinction' and although you may find a couple still working in the Terminal, the reality is that the best way to get in touch with family and friends is with a Wi-Fi Internet connection. Most bars, grills, and restaurants offer Free Wi-Fi and some, like the Coconut Lounge, have absolutely stunning locations. The closest Post Office to Puerta May is located in San Miguel.

Sightseeing

Cruise Travelers that enjoy sightseeing will have to walk outside the Terminal, where you may find Horse Carriage Tours. However, as mentioned before, besides a couple of attractions within walking distance, you should be aware that there isn't much to sightsee close by. Basically, you will just enjoy the Horse Carriage ride.

Shore Excursions (Shorex) Local Tour Operators

With very few exceptions, Cozumel top highlights are all relatively close by Puerta Maya and are easy to explore on your own. The exceptions are the archaeological site of Tulum, the Xcaret Park and Playa del Carmen, which are all located on the mainland. When planning to explore any of these sites it is advisable to book a shore excursion either with your cruise line, with local guides or with the many online services that offer shore excursions in Cozumel.

If you are booked on a shore excursion, there will be cruise line staff guiding excursionists to the tour buses that will be parked close to the exit of the terminal.

Local Tour Operator

There are too many local tour operators in Cozumel to mention all on this review. Always make sure, when booked with Independent Local Operators, to clearly establish the meeting point. Most probably, in the large covered area just before exiting the terminal where you will also find taxis and the cruise Shorex buses.

Naturally, considering the popularity of Cozumel as a Cruise Port, there many offering all sorts of excursions in the island. Explore on Your Own

What Can be explored on Your Own. Unless Playa del Carmen, the Xcaret Park or archaeological sites like Chichén Itzá or Tulum are on your bucket list all other attractions of Cozumel are pretty easy to be explored on your own by taxi, renting a scooter or a car.

There are only a few attractions within walking distance of Puerta Maya (two resorts and two shopping areas). To explore any of these on foot is perfectly safe. Unlike it happens in many other ports, locals will not be harassing you.

Mayan Plaza (Outside the Terminal)

Solo cruisers may find that traveling on your own may not be much cheaper than an organized excursion, but a couple and, certainly, a group or a family will save quite some good money. Above all, you will be in charge of your own time and, as already mentioned, perfectly safe.

The beaches, water parks and all-inclusive resorts of Cozumel are amongst the Top Highlights of the island and most are very close - between 2.5 miles (4 km) and 22 miles (36 km) - to Puerta Maya Terminal. San Miguel (the main town in the Island) is 3 miles (5 km) north of Puerta Maya. San Gervasio, a small Mayan archaeological site, is just 12 miles (19 km) north of the Terminal. Even the farthest attraction in the island - Punta Sur Park - is no more than 17 miles (27 km) away.

Most cruise travelers that have been in Cozumel have had the best experience with taxis. These are affordable, clean, with AC, easy to find and arguably the most convenient way to travel around in Cozumel.

Taxi Fares in Puerta Maya Terminal

Taxi rates are clearly indicated and literally include rides (and rates) to every possible destination. Natural and inevitably, solo cruisers should be prepared to pay more. For example, a ride to San Miguel Downtown will cost US$ 8.00 but the same ride for 5 passengers will cost US$ 12.00. This is the best way to travel around Cozumel if you wish to go to lesser known and off the beaten track areas like the beaches on east-north coast but also to the archaeological site of San Gervasio, El Caracol or the Punta Sur Park. Cozumel is known as a shopper's paradise (or nightmare for many a husband). Like every else in the Caribbean, jewelry and watches are predominant. However, like in Costa Maya, you will find that tobacco and spirits have the absolute best prices anywhere in the Caribbean (only comparable with St. Martin). Los Cinco Soles Shop (Puerta Maya Terminal) - Cozumel

Among the many shops in Puerta Maya you will also find some stores that are exclusively Mexican. Most of them also have stores in San Miguel, where there are even more shops than at the Terminal, but when shopping for many genuine Mexican products you really do not have to get on a taxi to San Miguel. At Puerta Maya, you find typical Mexican products in shops like Veari , Rogers Boots, Silver Emporio, Silver Traditions, Touch of Gold or Panama Jack . Los Cinco Soles is a shop that deserves to be highlighted as it sells some of the best products in Mexico ranging from of vanilla to ceramics, interior decorations, and local crafts. Prices in Los Cinco Soles may be a bit steeper than elsewhere but the quality is certainly much better.

Cigarettes, Cuban Cigars and Spirits

Considering that tobacco and spirits in Mexico have the best prices in the Western Caribbean, cruise travelers must not skip this opportunity. Cigars (in particular Cuban puros) are a bargain, a carton of cigarettes is sold for around US$24.00 (depending on the brands) and spirits are sold for 20% to 30% less than what you would pay in the United States.

Local Crafts and Flavors, Gifts and Souvenirs

Stores like Fiesta Maya, Mayan Fiesta and the already mentioned Los Cinco Soles sell all types of traditional local crafts, gifts and typical souvenirs like magnets, t-shirts, sombreros but also rum cakes, hot sauces, spices, coffee and genuine Mexican vanilla. You will also find many small kiosks scattered all over the terminal selling these type of souvenirs.

Shopping for Jewelry and high-end Watches, many times referred to as Time Pieces, in Cozumel is known to be among the top 5 in the Caribbean. This due to the fact that the prices are lower than almost everywhere else and that Cozumel has more shops than most islands in the Caribbean. Naturally, at Puerta Maya, you will find top names such as Diamonds International (with 5 shops), Effy, Colombian Emeralds, Tanzanite International, Milano or Mark Henry.

The Brands and Haggling

Cruise travelers will also find more affordable brands like Pandora, Alex and Ani, Ron Jon Surf Shop , Cariloha or Del Sol. Products are offered at these shops with good discounts but haggling will not take you far. However, when shopping for Jewelry and Watches in the ubiquitous shops that you will find everywhere in the Caribbean, haggling is a must. Asking prices may be slightly lower than on other islands but you may get a really great deal if you are willing to bargain, haggle, walk out of the shop just to be followed by a 'manager' and asked back inside for another extra discount. Cruise travelers that enjoy that sort of game may, at the end of the day, save some good money.

What's Nearby - Within Walking Distance

Palapa (Puerta Maya Terminal) - Cozumel

Outside the Terminal, after a humongous palapa, you will be on a wide road. To the right (south) there isn't much to see within walking distance unless you get in a taxi as all major beaches and beach clubs are located on the south coast. To the left (north) there are a couple of attractions and tourist services that may be of interest, and farther north you will be in San Miguel - the main city of Cozumel, 3 miles (5 km) - but not really within walking distance.

Mayan Pyramid Replica (Outside the Terminal)

Right in front of Puerta Maya, across the street, there is a small Shopping Mall popular with crew and staff. If you walk north, passing Subway and a gas station there is a recently developed new plaza ( Mayan Plaza ) with shops, restaurants, Mirado - a very nice coffee shop (with Wi-Fi) - an inevitable pharmacy, and a replica of a Mayan pyramid for photo ops. Around 500 feet (100 meters) farther, cruisers will be at the Royal Village Shopping Center.

The Royal Village is very nicely designed, has had its ups and downs but never really become a very popular venue. This is where Hard Rock Cafe is located amongst a handful of shops with well known brands like Diamonds International and an excellent coffee shop - Punta Del Cielo . The Royal Village is right in front of the International Terminal, where usually Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise ships dock. Royal Village Shopping (Outside the Terminal)

On the left side of the road, after the International Terminal, is the entrance to El Cid La Ceiba , a resort-hotel offering day-passes for Cruise Travelers. On a small block after El Cid, there are a a few stores - Cigars, Thrifty Car Rental and Sol y Mar Scooter Rental. Another 300 feet (150 meters) farther, the Park Royal is another resort offering Day-Passes. Both El Cid and Park Royal are less than 1/2 mile (700 meters) from Puerta Maya. After Park Royal, you will see the Atlantis Submarine Tours on the left - don't think you can just walking in for a tour as you may be required to book excursions directly with your cruise line. Just before Atlantis it is easy to miss Scuba Shack which offers excellent dives. After Atlantis, Tikila Bar on the left is a great place to have a refreshing drink, lunch or a quick bite, and you may even go for a scuba dive organized by the Dive Boutique next door.

Just a bit farther, Harley Davidson Rental is on the right and on the same block there a couple of excellent diving shops - Island Divers and Beach Bum . Farther still, there a few other diving spots with small but nice grills-bars by the sea. However, you really need to be a serious walker to get to off-the-beaten-track places with amazing beach settings such as the Sunset Bar , Turquoise Beach Bar or Blue Angel Resort (almost 1 mile from Puerta Maya).

There are actually three different pier locations.

Punta Langosta (used by Disney, NCL, MSC, Oceania, Silversea, Marella Cruises) , is located right downtown and after leaving the ship and walking towards the city down the dock, you will go over an overpass into a shopping mall. You are right in the heart of downtown Cozumel. One can also take a ferry to Playa Del Carmen. Always get a one-way ticket as the different ferry companies do not accept each other's tickets. The companies are Winjet  and  Ultramar's . The ferry ride can be a little rough!

The International Pier (used by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise ships, consisting of two piers, is about a 10-minute taxi ride south of town, you can walk it in about 30 minutes right along the coastline, but if it is hot, take a taxi. If the lines are really long just get out of the taxi line and walk out the exit of the pier to the street - turn left and walk toward the El Cid La Ceiba Hotel. There are taxis coming from town trying to get into the pier and they are thrilled to get a fare without having to get in the long line of cars at the pier.

The third pier, Puerto Maya, ( used by cruise lines sailing under Carnival Corporation flag) consisting of three piers, is just beyond the International Pier and has the same dynamics.

Finally, when there are too many ships in port, some ships will anchor outside and tender into the Punta Langosta pier.

Sightseeing:

Most visitors travel to Cozumel to see what is underwater. While there are quite a few beach clubs that offer to snorkel, the main attractions are the reefs offshore and the multitude of dive shops ready to take you there. The main town and dive operations are on the west side of the island, but if you rent a Beetle or scooter then the east side of the island is the place to go. The east side of the island is mostly undeveloped, but there are beautiful beaches, big waves, and rocky outcrops over the ocean. If the waves are sufficient you can find a few small blow holes. You will also find a restaurant on the beach every few kilometers.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Rent a car from any of the well-known firms. You will find them near the cruise ship docks. Since there is only one main road you will not get lost.

Expect to pay $10 for the ride into San Miguel from the pier. Most taxi drivers ask much more when in doubt, ask to see the rate card required of all taxi drivers to carry.

San Miguel is very walkable and you can easily explore the waterfront and plaza area on foot. The main attractions are the small eateries and shops that line the streets and the main square.

Mini Submarine Tour — a new way of exploring the underwater world. This new activity by Cozumel Water Sports offers all non divers and non snorkelers to explore the reefs and sea life of Cozumel. Riding your underwater scooter with your head dry in the air filled helmet, you can drive around the reefs. Especially great for people who wear glasses as you can have them on under water.

The primary gateway between Cozumel and the mainland of the Yucatan Peninsula, including Cancun and the Riviera Maya, is the passenger ferry to Playa del Carmen, which is especially popular with cruise ship passengers coming to the mainland to see attractions like the Mayan Ruins, Xcaret, or Xel Ha.

Nearby Places:

Chankanaab National Park , (About 9km south of town), 7am - 5pm daily. The park includes a beach, restaurant, bar, changing rooms, walking trails, and a lagoon with a large iguana population. Activities include snorkeling & diving, swimming with the dolphins, scuba, and Seatrek. $2 coupon and packages available at their website. approx. $22 for adults.

Being the only active Pearl Farm in the Caribbean, Cozumel Pearl Farm is located in a natural protected area that remains pristine and untouched; it is only accessible by boat since it is surrounded by the mangrove lagoon ecosystem on one side and the fascinating turquoise color waters of the Caribbean on the other.

Chichen Itza Chichen Itza is a well-known Archaeological Site and more after being selected one of the New 7 Wonders of the World in July the 7th, 2007. Two hours away from the cruise terminals.

Río Secreto Río Secreto could very well be one of the great world wonders. Experience this stunning underground river with thousands of dramatic stalactites and stalagmites. It's like stepping back in time to witness something mysterious and truly spectacular. About 30 minutes drive from the cruise terminals.

Shopping and Food

Silver is cheaper here than in the U.S. but be sure to look for the .925 stamp as some places do sell fake silver jewelry. Tip: To avoid being caught out, carry a small magnet when you shop. If the silver sticks to the magnet then it is not sterling silver.

The currency of Mexico is the peso (MXN). The symbol for pesos is the same as for US dollars, which can be slightly confusing. Prices in dollars (in tourist areas) are labeled "US$" or sport an S with a double stroke. There is about 17 peso to 1US$.

Credit cards are not as widely accepted as in Europe or the USA. Some companies make an extra charge of around 5% on such transactions. Cash is King here.

Spanish is the main language. English is largely spoken in border cities with the United States as well as tourist destinations.

Traditionally, stores are open from 9 to 1 (except Sunday) and 5 to 9, but those nearest the pier tend to stay open all day, particularly during high season. Most shops are closed Sunday morning.

Cozumel Cruise Port Guide Info

Bienvenidos a Cozumel, one of the most popular Caribbean cruise destinations and a beautiful Mexican island located off the eastern coast of Yucatan Peninsula, part of Mexico’s state of Quintana Roo. The island is separated from the mainland by Cozumel Chanel and faces Puerto del Carmen on the opposite side. You can get to the mainland by ferries that run regularly several times daily (the ferry ride lasts around 45 minutes), and there are many mainland shore excursions organized by both cruise lines and independent tour operators that you can join. The island of Cozumel is small and the capital city is San Miguel de Cozumel, located in the proximity of the cruise terminals. The economy of Cozumel mainly relies on the cruise industry, and the island’s infrastructure was built to suit the needs of cruise passengers coming to Cozumel. Thus, the island boasts a wide variety of adventure and animal parks, tourist resorts, shopping malls, exotic bars, authentic Mexican restaurants, and more.

Due to a large number of cruise ships coming to Cozumel on daily basis, the island has three cruise terminals: Punta Langosta, International Cruise Terminal, and Puerta Maya.  Punta Langosta is the terminal closest to the San Miguel downtown, within only a few minutes walking distance, and is mainly used by ferries and several cruise lines such as NCL, Disney, MSC, Silversea, Oceania, and a few others (keep in mind that docking place can change, and check with your cruise line where your ship will dock).

Upon exiting the terminal area, turn right and after a 10-minute walk, you’ll reach a wonderful waterfront boardwalk filled with restaurants, bars, and shops. There are some unique sculptures you can explore there, such as Coral Reef Monument and Birds Monument, as well as Museo de Cozumel, a history museum consisting of archaeological artifacts and exhibits on Cozumel history. A part of the museum belongs to the restaurant offering delicious Mexican specialties and stunning views of the ocean. In the vicinity of the terminal, there is Punta Langosta Mall, a two-story building featuring popular brand shops such as Diamond International, souvenir stores, a cinema, and a variety of coffee shops and dining places. You can simply roam San Miguel’s bustling streets, explore its markets, parks, and enjoy its rich tourist offer. Within a 10-minute walk from the terminal, on your left side, you can spot many beach bars offering nice sea views, among which the most popular one is No Name Bar – the favorite bar of many crew members, boasting a pool, great food, relaxed atmosphere, and cool vibes.  On the other hand, two other cruise terminals are located further away. Both International Cruise Terminal and Puerta Maya are located around 5 km (3 mi) away from San Miguel, whereas the distance between the two terminals is only about 500 m (less than a 10-minute walk).  International Cruise Terminal has two berths and is mostly used by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise lines.

It has a large terminal area featuring various shops, tour operator stands, bars, restaurants, among which Margaritaville, located right in front of your ship, is the most popular one. If you search for a nice beach, one of the most popular ones is Paradise beach, located within a 10-15 minute driving distance from San Miguel, toward the south of the island. Located nearby, Playa Mia is another large beach resort, the most visited one when it comes to cruise ship guests. It has a large buffet-style restaurant, several beach bars, gift shops, and offers culinary and tequila mixing classes where you get to cook your own Mexican food and prepare margaritas. • Casa Denis is the oldest restaurant in Cozumel, located in the southeast quadrant of the central Plaza Benito Juarez. Once you find the landmark orange clock tower, just ask – you’ll be steps away from Casa Denis.
• La Chef is a wonderful little cafe on the waterfront stretch of Melgar Avenue, just north of the museum. La Chef is famous for its lobster sandwich, and I have to agree it’s a must try!

Cozumel Beaches within Walking Distance to Cruse Pier

There are no large beach clubs in the downtown area, but that doesn’t mean cruise passengers can’t find a nice place to take a quick dip near Punta Langosta.  And you don’t need a snorkeling excursion to experience some of Cozumel’s best-known water activities.

These three spots are the most accessible places to get in a bit of swimming or snorkeling, right in downtown San Miguel de Cozumel :

• Hemingway is another great waterfront restaurant just north of La Monina (see above), and has a small nice beach area where people swim, snorkel, and even do some Cozumel shore diving . Rent or buy some snorkel gear, and see what the fuss is all about. 
• La Malecón is another name for a waterfront promenade road in Spanish, and in Cozumel, Rafael Melgar Avenue is The Malecón. Walk along “Melgar” anywhere downtown and you’ll be steps from the clear blue Caribbean. You’ll see a few places that make it easy to jump in in the water and cool off, plus there are lots of snorkel boats at the Cozumel passenger ferry pier in case you decide to take a snorkel tour out on the reefs . 
• La Playa Caletita is one of the main public sandy beaches in Cozumel located about .75 miles (1 kilometer) south of Punta Langosta cruise pier. This beach is small, but it’s free and very nice! Located right next to a large white lighthouse that serves the car ferry pier and is also flanked by a few fun waterfront places to eat and get your drink on. You’re very likely to rub elbows with some locals at this spot, and it’s a nice safe walk, there and back . 

Shopping within Walking Distance of Punta Langosta Cruise Pier in Cozumel

Punta Langosta Mall is the obvious first choice, since you’ll disembark and be funneled right through the terminal mall, itself.

Punta Langosta Mall has souvenir shops, clothing boutiques, a Starbucks, and several great places to eat. It can get a little congested with fellow passengers, lots of taxis, and general foot traffic, but it’s well maintained and a great place to pit stop on your way off or back onto you cruise.

Rafael Melgar Avenue is Cozumel’s main drag. This avenue stretches right along the waterfront, and from Punta Langosta, you’ll walk a couple blocks south to find a few great stores and waterfront eateries, or north to hit up all the fancy jewelry stores and duty-free shops on your way to the center of down and the Parque Benito Juarez plaza (see below).

Cultural Opportunities within Walking Distance

Benito Juarez Plaza is Cozumel’s town zócalo , or central town square.

Full of shopping and restaurants, Parque Benito Juarez could take up a day alone, especially if you just want to find some great food, poke around shops full of colorful and handmade goodies , or belly-up to a fun bar and trade tall tales with other travelers. 

The Museum of Cozumel is a great place to to duck out of the sun for a bit, and learn about the island’s natural history, as well as its rich history of Mayan traditions, its role during the era of European exploration, and a load of interesting stories about Cozumel in the 20th and 21st Cs. 

Huichol Art Gallery is a small gallery right on Melgar Avenue that features impressive examples of traditional Huichol artwork, and intricate beading work, specifically. 

Seawalls public murals are sprinkled throughout town, thanks to two international public events that draw attention to the importance of conserving our oceans through the amazing large-scale work of mural artists from around the world who came together to help remind us to “Protect What You Love.” See how many you spot as you walk around town. 

Public art along the Malecón adds even more cultural shine to San Miguel, and while many of us locals take it for granted after a while, really speaks to the history and art that infuses most of Mexican life. It’s also one of many wonderful and free features in downtown Cozumel .

The International Cruise Terminal in Cozumel

Check your cruise itinerary and see if your cruise ship docks instead at The International Pier in Cozumel. If you’re on a Royal Caribbean or a Celebrity Cruise ship, most likely you’ll be here.

Cozumel’s International Cruise Terminal is located 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) south of Punta Langosta, but there are some great places to eat and shop – along with a safe, easy, flat, and beautiful walk along the bright blue Caribbean – in between.  

The International Cruise Pier in Cozumel

Cozumel’s International Cruise terminal is close to some popular destinations like the Cozumel Park Royal Resort, the Atlantis Submarine ride, and several highly regarded dive shops . 

There’s plenty of souvenir shopping right around the International Pier complex, as well as some quality stores for the cruise traveler who might need non-touristy things , like a new bathing suit, 

Restaurants and Bars within Walking Distance of Cozumel International Pier

Ernestos Fajitas Factory is on the waterfront, about 500 yards (.5 km) north of the International terminal exit. Ernestos is an old-school popular place in Cozumel, featuring delicious fajitas and a second-floor balcony with stunning views. 

Coco Cafe is a stylish new coffee shop another block or two north of Ernestos. Part of a successful restaurant group in Cozumel, Coco Cafe is the perfect place to start the day with a cup of good Mexican coffee and a selection of light pastries and sandwiches.

Coco is in a small strip of stores, including a new pharmacy and an Oxxo convenience store, so overall this is a handy pit stop within easy walking distance of either southern cruise pier and perfect no matter what you plan for the rest of your day. 

This strip is also home to Beach Bum Bikes , which is my favorite place to rent electric bikes and do one of the most fun and stress-free eco-friendly activities on the island.  Get more deets right here . 

Paprika Restaurant is tucked into the greenery just before you get to Coco Cafe. Paprika is a nice sit-down cafe that specializes in breakfast and lunch, as well as fresh juices and smoothies. 

Tikila Beach Bar is right across the street from Paprika, and right on the water. In fact, in the last few years, Tikila has really grown its scuba diving offerings and is one of the best places to go for a shore dive in Cozumel .  But at its heart, it’s a great little bar and grill with a cool balcony area to have a cold beer and watch the boats go by for a while. 

Hard Rock Cafe Cozume l has a large location in the Royal Village Shopping Mall, directly across from the International Cruise Terminal. Not exactly an authentic local experience, but hey, their T-shirt game is still pretty strong. 

Beaches within Walking Distance of Cozumel’s International Pier

Del mar latino beach club cozumel – nice short walk.

Del Mar Latino Beach Club is a new fun choice for a beach day, and it’s one of the closest beaches at just a few hundred yards (less than 1km) north of the pier, so it’s easily within walking distance of the International cruise terminal and Puerta Maya.

Built on the long reputation of Casa del Mar Dive Hotel , the Del Mar Latino Beach Club is a relatively small beach club situated very close to the southern cruise ships. It’s got a huge bar, a full menu, music, great lounge chairs, water and snorkeling access, and a nice pool and hot tub. Their prices are really reasonable, too.  

Del Mar Latino Beach Club is right next door to the Cozumel Marine World Dive shop , so if you want to rent some snorkel gear and check out their house reef, or maybe try your hand at a Discover Scuba Class, they’re a great place to start.

• Great views
• Pool, Hot tub, and beach entry
• Full menu and bar

Cozumel Park Royal Resort ‘s all-inclusive day pass is another option in that same locale, but with a higher price tag, given Park Royal’s larger facilities, multiple pools, and more bar options. 

Sunset Beach & Bar in Cozumel is a cool waterfront spot that’s another .5-mile walk north on Melgar. It only takes another 10 minutes or so to walk to Sunset Beach, but it’s worth it for the fresh juice mojitos, alone!

Sunset Beach has strong, free wifi , a fun bar setting, and a full menu. Plus, it’s right on the shore of the Caribbean. They have snorkeling gear, too!

Shopping within Walking Distance

Royal Village Shopping Mall is located directly across the street from the International Cruise Terminal and just about 500 yards (.5 km) north of Puerta Maya. 

The well-appointed outdoor strip mall has a large sporting goods store called Martí (similar to a Foot Locker store), a day spa, a convenience store, various gift shops, and a few restaurants including the Hard Rock Cozumel, Carl’s Jr., and more.  (Read more about the shopping opportunities near the cruise ports right here .) 

Street Carts with vendors selling things are also out on the street as you walk around this area, so keep your eye out for hand-painted straw hats, beaded jewelry, and small pottery items. 

The Mayan Plaza is probably the most fun shopping to do near both southern cruise terminals, International and Puerta Maya.

While it’s undoubtedly meant for high tourist activity, there are fun shops full of legit leatherwork and Mexican crafts and souvenirs, some photo ops like a (very) small recreation of the famous Chichen Itza Mayan ruin site, and a multicolored COZUMEL sign to take pictures with.

Puerta Maya also has a number of bars and restaurants, including one oddball you should try: an absolutely delicious and authentic Chinese place, on the north side of the Mayan Plaza.  Primarily aimed at cruise ship crew members, this place is a real score for those of us who live here, and – apologies! – occasionally crave more international fare. 

The Mayan Plaza also features daily performances by a group of amazing Voladores, or “the flyers” – a beautiful and thrilling cultural tradition from preclassical times. This is a free activity that is ideal for kids and families .

Troupes of Voladores (or “flyers) in colorful garb climb a large central pole to death-defying heights, and perform an amazing aerial acrobatic routine to the sound of a haunting traditional flute.

Yes, it is somewhat “touristy” but in the best way. These artists are incredible to watch, and if you’ve never seen a Mexican Voladores performance before, let Cozumel be your first. 

Atlantis Submarine excursion is another special treat that’s easily walkable from the International Pier or the Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal. 

This is especially great for people who would love to see what goes on on the coral reefs but aren’t quite willing to try SCUBA diving – though as you can see from our review of Cozumel’s best ship wreck dive the C-53 , you might see active divers if you ride in the submarine.

The Atlantis Submarine Cozumel experience is another of the many activities on the island that’s great for families .  Located right next to the Del Mar Latino Beach Club (highlighted, above), so a very easy walk from either cruise facility. 

Unique and fun experience. See the sea in a new way. Great for kids and families!

Puerta Maya Cruise Pier in Cozumel

The Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal in Cozumel is the most recently built facility and primarily serves cruise ship passengers arriving on Carnival Cruise Line ships in Cozumel.

A.k.a. The Carnival Cozumel Port

The three cruise piers in Cozumel sometimes welcome cruise lines that aren’t their typical tenants, and help each other when necessary.

That said, the Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal is Cozumel is familiarly known as the Carnival Cozumel port , as it’s almost exclusively for Carnival ships.

Amenities Within Walking Distance of Cozumel’s Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal and Piers

Situated just a couple of blocks south of the International Pier, Puerta Maya is the closest to the Mayan Plaza open-air shopping plaza (see above) , as well as several pharmacies, convenience stores, and some independent (and delicious) southeast Asian restaurants that are popular with cruise ship crew members.

As you disembark at Puerta Maya Cruise Pier Terminal, head north (left) on the main road and soon you’ll encounter the International Pier, the Royal Village shopping mall (see more above), and all the other amenities recommended in the previous section.

These two southern cruise terminals in Cozumel are basically next-door neighbors, so the tips above will cover those of you on the Carnival cruise ships to Cozumel, also.

In other words, Puerta Maya is also very close and within easy walking distance of the Del Mar Latino Beach Club in Cozumel, the Park Royal Resort, Sunset Bar on the waterfront, and all the others listed above.

Why You Might Still Want To Take A Taxi In Cozumel

As tempting as it may be to explore the vibrant streets of Cozumel on foot, there are some good reasons to consider taking a Cozumel taxi instead .

The island offers a whole lot of other natural and cultural gems, popular beaches, and breathtaking sights that are located a bit too far away from the cruise piers to be considered “walking distance.”

Beautiful remote beaches stretch far beyond the vicinity of downtown and the Cozumel Cruise Pier Terminals.

So if you are up for some more exploring, why limit yourself to just a small slice of paradise when there’s so much more to discover?

Cozumel – Mexico

Welcome to the Cozumel Cruise Port Guide. Cozumel is the largest Mexican island in the Caribbean Sea. The main town on the island is called San Miguel. The island lies 19 km / 12 miles in front of Playa del Carmen on the mainland. Cozumel is a perfect destination for those looking for beaches, shopping, scuba diving and snorkelling. But for those interested in history instead of beaches you are at the right spot as well! The island has a number of Mayan ruines like San Gervasi and you could even visit the famous Chichen Itza when your ship is in port in Cozumel.

Cruise Port Guide Cozumel – Mexico: docked

Puerta Maya Pier and TMM International Pier: generally used by Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, AIDA, Holland America Line and Costa Cruises

These cruise docks are about 1/2 mile away from each other (see map above). The dock is about 5 miles south of the main town San Miguel. Here you will find a large cruise centre with all you cruise, shopping and tourist facilities right there! Find well known retailers as Del Sol, Diamonds International and Piranha Joe’s right there at the cruise centre. You will even find a pharmacy, convenience access and a special excursion pier here. If you don’t want to stick around the cruise centre you can take a taxi south (5 minute ride south) to the beaches, beach clubs and marine park. You can also take a take north (10 minute ride) to the downtown shopping area.

Punta Langosta pier: generally used by Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney, Princess and Voyager of the seas

This dock is located in the city centre of San Miguel. From here it’s a pretty 1,5 mile walk to the city’s bars, restaurants and downtown San Miguel along the nice waterfront promenade. Some of the things to do is the San Miguel Walking Tour and of course shopping should be on your list as well! At about 10 minutes drive you will find the Chankannab National Park as well as several beaches. At less than 5 minutes you will find the Playa Azul. Car Rentals can be found at 5 blocks from the pier you will find a car rental (Smart Car and Alamo).

Funded: tender pier

This actually means you wont be docking at all, but you will tendering. Often the San Miguel pier is used as a tender pier. This is also the pier of the ferry’s between Playa Del Carmen and the island. There are plenty of taxis here and you are within easy walking distance to shopping, restaurants and bars.

Taxis at Cozumel

You will find plenty of taxis at the cruise terminals. All drivers are required to carry a rates card. Most of them speak proper English. Taxi prices underneath are an estimation of a one way journey and should be used as a guideline when negotiating. Prices are per taxi up to 4 people: Downtown = 95 pesos or 8 US dollar Mercado = 100 pesos or 8 US dollar Chankanaab park = 150 pesos or 11 US dollar Playa Uvas = 150 pesos or 11 US dollar Playa Corona = 160 pesos or 12 US dollar Airport = 190 pesos or 15 US dollar South Point = 720 pesos or 45 US dollar Mayan Ruins = 720 pesos or 45 US dollar Island Tour = 800 pesos or 50 US dollar

Ferries to Playa del Carmen

You can take a ferry to the mainland at the San Miguel Passenger Ferry Pier in downtown San Miguel. The crossing takes about 45 minutes. Ferries go about every hour. Keep in mind the schedule could change without notice. Tickets cost between around 12 US dollar per adult and 7 US dollar per child.

Cozumel offers several docking locations for cruise ships. Puerto Maya & TMM cruise pier is one of those locations. It is the most southern dock of all. Where Does the Carnival Cruise Ship Dock in Cozumel Mexico?

Cozumel is a beautiful island off the eastern coast of Mexico, and it’s a popular destination for Carnival Cruise ships. The island offers plenty of fun activities, restaurants, and attractions that make it a great place to spend a vacation. But where does the Carnival Cruise ship dock in Cozumel Mexico?

The Main Cruise Port

The main cruise port for Carnival Cruise ships in Cozumel is the Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal. This terminal is located on the western side of the island, just south of San Miguel, the main town in Cozumel. It’s located close to several shopping malls and restaurants, making it easy to find something to do after disembarking from the ship.

Other Ports

In addition to Puerta Maya, there are also two other ports that Carnival Cruise ships can dock at in Cozumel – Punta Langosta and International Pier. Punta Langosta is located on the south side of the island near Playa del Carmen, while International Pier is located on the north side near Cancun. Both ports offer access to many of the same attractions and activities as Puerta Maya, making them good alternatives if your ship docks at one of these locations instead.

What To Do When You Get Off The Ship

There are so many things to do that it’s tough to decide the best things to do in Cozumel, especially when you only have one day in port.

Here are our best suggestions on what to do in Cozumel in only one day.

Almost all short cruises from South Florida or the Gulf states plus Western Caribbean itineraries include a visit to Cozumel. This year, Cozumel expects nearly 4 million cruise passengers. I t’s no wonder why.

It’s hard to believe that this diverse, laid-back island in the Yucatan Peninsula is just 12 miles off the east coast of mainland Mexico. It’s also a jumping off point for a ferry to Playa del Carmen on the mainland and excursions to the Mayan Ruins.

I love a day in Cozumel.  From gorgeous uncrowded secluded beaches or famous beach clubs to world-class snorkeling or discovering authentic Mexican cuisine, there’s so much to do in Cozumel on a cruise day. I’ve narrowed down the list to places I’ve seen, dined, shopped, and shore tours I’ve taken.

Since your cruise ship is stopping in Cozumel for only one day, you better make the most your time! So let’s get started. Here are my picks for some of the  best things to do in Cozumel and what makes this tiny island so unique. 

A Little History of Cozumel May Help You Decide

Though nearly a 3,000 year-old civilization, Cozumel was a commercial and ceremonial center during the classic Mayan period about 250 to 900 A.D. During this time the Mayans created many of its sacred archeological sites dotted across the island. 

Mayans would travel to and from the mainland by canoe and considered this land to have religious significance.

Cozumel was also once a refuge for pirates and trading ships, giving them a place to replenish and feel protected by the dangerous coral reef. Eventually, in 1518, with the first Spanish expedition, the Spaniards occupy the land, finally making it the most prominent island inhabited by Mexico. 

Now, Cozumel is a  thriving tourist location for its beautiful sandy beaches, excellent snorkeling and diving, cuisine and much more. 

Where Your Ship Might Dock in Cozumel

Your cruise ship will dock at one of three Cozumel cruise ports, all located on the island’s western side. These include Punta Langosta, International pier, and Puerta Maya. Where you dock could depend on what cruise line you are sailing. 

Think of Punta Langosta as the downtown pier. The International Pier is three miles south, and then Puerta Maya is the furthest outside of town, nearly five miles away. From Puerta Maya, it’s too far to walk into town, but you’re closer to the beach clubs.

Punta Langosta

Punta Langosta is Cozumel’s local downtown pier. If your ship docks at this port, you will be in the center of it all and only a few minutes walk to downtown San Miguel, the largest city on the island. 

Leaving the ship, kiosks and vendors will filter you through the Punta Langosta Mall full of shops and restaurants. And souvenir stands. Almost all Norwegian Cruise Line ships will dock here, assuming there’s space. Plus, Disney and MSC also use this port. 

Punta Langosta Mall has all the usual Caribbean shops; Cariloha, Del Sol, Diamonds International, Colombian Emeralds. Take time to venture into the smaller shops. Be prepared to haggle for the price; it’s what they do. But don’t try to bargain too low – everyone has to earn a living. 

If you need any drugstore items, there is at least one pharmacy in the mall. There’s no haggling over prices at any of the pharmacies. 

International Pier

The International Pier is the middle-island cruise ship port. You’ll probably dock here if you’re cruising with Royal Caribbean or Celebrity.

You can still walk to Punta Langosta and San Miguel from this port, but it’s usually too hot to walk into town and back to your ship. For a few dollars, it’s easier to hop into a taxi for the ride downtown or back to your ship.

The shopping mall across the street, Royal Village Shopping Mall, gets mixed reviews from customers. All the usual Caribbean shops are here, too.

If you decide to walk into town, the pedestrian sidewalk is reasonably wide on the sea side. Along the way, you’ll see waterfront restaurants and bars on the other side of the street but be extra careful when you cross the busy road.

The International Pier is also home to colorful architectural sites and a giant shopping center and places to eat and drink. This is the only drawback to cruising with Royal Caribbean and brands.

Punta Langosta and Puerta Maya have a nicer infrastructure complex. Maybe that will change.

Puerta Maya

The farthest port from downtown San Miguel is Puerta Maya , about five miles south. This is where Carnival ships dock and most of their brands dock here, too.

After you leave your ship, you’ll find a lush garden full of flowers and plants and the most extensive shopping mall out of all three ports. There are at least 50 shops plus pop-up kiosk-type vendor stands. And of course, a pharmacy. 

Puerta Maya is home to popular restaurants like The Three Amigos bar and a newer Pancho’s Backyard plus lots of colorful photo ops. 

If you want to head out on your own, there’s a car rental agency located near the taxi stand. 

Best Places for Lunch in San Miguel, Cozumel

If you love food, you’ll be happy to learn that Cozumel has some fabulous places to eat. If you’re like me, when I travel, I want to make sure to sample the best authentic food I can find. Cozumel has several restaurants that won’t disappoint. 

When you only have one day to spare, it’s helpful to know exactly where to eat in Cozumel. Here are some fantastic suggestions! And yes, I’ve been to all of them. 

Pancho’s Backyard

Pancho’s Backyard, in the heart of downtown San Miguel, is adjacent to Los Cinco Solas shopping arcade. The decor is traditional Mexican style with woven leather seats and bright colors. Just keeping walking north along the waterfront and you’ll find Pancho’s Backyard.

Local musicians play the sounds of Mexico for a fantastic ambiance. Not to worry, it’s not a noisy mariachi band. Instead, there are usually three people quietly playing guitar and accompanying instruments.

There’s also the newer Pancho’s Backyard down by Carnival’s pier, Puerto Maya. But I prefer the Pancho’s to the north at Los Cinco Solas small shopping mall. 

If you’re looking for dessert, it’s a short taxi ride to the nearby Kakao Chocolate Factory.

Pescaderia is considered a hidden gem a bit outside of Centro San Miguel. This restaurant features fresh seafood dishes, including their famous ceviche, which is a must-try! Or try the local catch, prepared whole and served family-style.

Pescaderia also plays live music and is known for its accommodating and amiable owners and staff. This family-run restaurant has gluten-free options and reasonable prices for its high-quality food.

Panaderia la Cozumelena

Since 1962, Panaderia la Cozumelena has been serving delicious coffee and breakfast to its patrons. The menu has something for everyone, including light fruit and smoothies to substantial breakfasts.

Order a cafe de olla, coffee with cinnamon, and you’ll also receive pan dulce, a sweet and traditional Mexican bread. This place is the perfect place to break your fast when docking early for a day in Cozumel.

Cozumel Beach Clubs 

What’s the number one thing you should do when visiting Cozumel? Go to the beach! If you’re looking to enjoy a full beach/pool day, there are a ton of beach clubs from which to choose.

Here are a few suggestions! Keep in mind that the most popular and sandy beaches are all on the island’s west side. 

That’s where you’ll find the lively beach clubs, major hotels, and some of the best dive and snorkeling sites in the world. 

Mr. Sanchos Beach Club

Mr. Sanchos  Beach Club, located about 20 minutes from downtown San Miguel, offers an all-inclusive day pass to travelers looking to get the most out of the relaxing beach life in Cozumel.

All the cruise ships sell Mr. Sanchos beach shore excursions, so don’t be surprised at the number of cruise passengers homesteading their beach chairs.

A day pass includes all of your food and drink as well as access to their two pools, beach palapas, and activities such as kayaking, water sports, and more. You can even add on horseback riding, parasailing, and the use of a wave runner.

Paradise Beach Club

Paradise Beach Club is another option when looking for an all-inclusive excursion with unlimited drinks and food. Enjoy their enormous heated pool and cute boutique shopping stores to pick up your souvenirs. 

This particular club also features a Fun Day pass which includes access to their ocean water park with inflatable trampolines, slides, and more.

This pass also gives you access to kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and snorkeling gear. 

Cabana Beach Club

If you’re looking for a more private experience, Cabana Beach might be the best place for you. At this beach club, you’ll enjoy your private VIP cabana that can hold up to six guests.

You’ll also have access to concierge service for food, drinks, and activities. There are also many events held at this particular club, including live music and dance parties. If you’re looking for a private and premiere experience, the Cabana Beach Club is it!

Also included with your entrance fee is access for snorkeling in the nearby Chankanaab Eco Park. 

Isla Pasión (Passion Island)

The private island of Isla Pasión is located at the north end of Cozumel, reachable by boat. Tours to this secluded beach are offered by all the cruise lines. 

Included with the tour package are lounge chairs, hammocks, a water park, plus lunch and beverages. If you really want to get away from the crowds and stay on the west (calmer seas) side of Cozumel, this is a great choice.

Best Snorkeling Locations

While snorkeling isn’t my go-to sport, snorkeling is one of the best activities you can do in these warm Caribbean waters. Cozumel is known for its incredible and plentiful coral reefs, and following are a few of the best snorkeling locations in Cozumel and possibly the world.

Dzul Ha at The Money Bar

This location, near the Puerta Maya and International piers, could be the best location for snorkeling in all of Cozumel.

There’s plenty of sea life with large schools of tropical fish and an excellent chance to view turtles and manta rays! It’s also a very uncrowded beach club with great food and lounge chairs. 

Playa Corona

Playa Corona is an excellent spot for snorkeling in shallow waters. Without the need for a boat ride to get to some great snorkeling, it’s a fan favorite!

Spot schools of fish and enjoy the local restaurant when you’ve become waterlogged and need a break!

Chankanaab Eco Park

At this popular spot, you’ll be sure to see lobster, colorful coral, manta rays, and much more. The mild currents in this area make for an abundance of tropical fish.

You won’t have to dive too deep to see all that you’d want to see on a snorkeling excursion. 

Best Uncrowded Beaches on the “Other” Side

Most people gravitate towards the west side of Cozumel because of San Miguel, the many beach clubs, and all the three cruise ports along the coast.

However, the  other side of Cozumel  is beautiful, more rugged looking, and much more private if you’re looking to get away from the crowds.

On the east side of the island, tourists come for the bars and restaurants, narrow beaches, and gorgeous views of the rugged eastern coastline. 

If you’re looking for a quieter place to relax and enjoy a good book without interruption, try visiting one of these options on the “other” side of the island. 

Punta Sur Ecological Beach Park

At the southern tip of Cozumel Island, this eco-reserve is a protected lagoon teeming with wild birds and crocodiles. Climb to the top of the lighthouse for beautiful views of the island.

Here on the east side of Cozumel and the Caribbean Sea, you’ll feel like you’re on your private beach. You can rent 4x4s and head out on your own.

Some rentals also include a stop for lunch and a beverage and time to relax on the beach. 

This could be one of the best things to do in Cozumel on a cruise. Especially if you want to get away from the hub-bub of downtown and usually thousands of cruise passengers. 

Playa Punta Morena

Talk about private! This beach is tucked away on the less popular east side of the island. Here, you can rent a hammock or lounger or use your belongings for sitting privately and spending time alone in paradise.

Playa Chen Rio and Chen Rio Restaurant

Playa Chen Rio beach is a great escape and one of the only really nice soft, sandy beaches on this side of the island.

Have lunch at Chen Rio’s as you overlook the waves crashing against the magnificent rocks along the shore. The palapa-inspired decor gives you an authentic tropical island experience. There’s an extensive menu to peruse and a sandy path down to the sea for exploring after lunch. 

For a break from the action, located between Chen Rio and Punta Morena, ascend the stone stairs up to one of my favorite bars in Cozumel.

With stunning views of the Caribbean Sea and excellent drinks and snacks, this is a great way to end your day in Cozumel.

There’s also a sandy walking path down to the rocky, limestone beach. Not for swimming. 

Best Shopping in Cozumel

Something about traveling makes you want to shop! Of course, you’ll want to pick up some great souvenirs for your loved ones at home and also something for yourself to remember the trip.

Head to one of these shopping locations to find your favorite souvenirs.

Los Cinco Solas

Known in English as the Five Sons, this shopping center is a souvenir hunter’s dream.

Considered one of the best shopping destinations in all of Cozumel, this area is where you’ll find the best selection of beautifully hand-crafted gifts and pottery on the entire island.

While some of the items may be a bit expensive, it’s worth it for the quality and uniqueness.

Remember, if you have lunch at Pancho’s Backyard at the north end of town, you’ll be right there at Los Cinco Solas.

In need of sunscreen or other last-minute items that you forgot to pack? Are you looking for some unique spices? Look no further than MegaMart.

With tons of fresh fruit, vegetables, and to-go snacks, you’ll find it hard not to walk away with something delicious. It’s like a Walmart but more fun!

But remember, only unopened packs of food, coffee, spices, etc., are allowed back on the ship.

El Mercado is a colorful, open-air area full of little eateries and small shops. This local market is the perfect place to try all different types of local flavors, especially on a budget.

Spend a couple of hours walking around for some fresh ready-to-eat meals! But you can’t bring the fruit back to your ship.

Punta Langosta Mall 

Located right next to the Punta Langosta cruise port, you’ll find all of the souvenirs you need.

Visit as soon as you dock or while you’re waiting to board after your day ashore. This area is full of big-name shops but also local Mexican vendors as well as a pharmacy.

Similar to Puerto Maya, it’s a tourist’s shopping haven. 

Getting Around Cozumel Island

If you want to enjoy the most of Cozumel on your cruise, you’ll need a proper way to get around. Consider renting a taxi when you get off your cruise ship to take you downtown for a fair price.

If you want to go to the east side of the island, it might be better to rent a car instead of paying for the higher cab fare.

Or, walk up to a cab driver and ask how much he’d charge for a 1/2 day of touring. 

A couple of years ago, for $50 USD, our driver took three of us all around the island, with stops at Chen Rio, Coconuts, and a couple of other places. 

If you’re feeling more adventurous, consider renting an ATV to explore the island!

To try and do many of the best things to do in Cozumel on a cruise, you really need to maximize your time. Cozumel is an incredible island with tons of unique and interesting activities and places to explore.

Be sure to leave some time to taste the local flavors from some of the best restaurants in the area, sip a cold margarita while you relax on some of the Caribbean’s best beaches. 

You’ll see colorful tiny tropical fish swimming right up to the shoreline. But go snorkeling at the reefs, and you’ll be astounded at the variety of underwater activities and beauty.

Hi Liz, Thank you so much for your kind words! Happy to share my info. Yes, I’ve spent a day at Nachi Cocum more than once. In fact, I think it was the first beach club I ever went to in Cozumel years ago and returned to several times. The pool is very nice, the food is plentiful and more typically touristic than a restaurant in town but still good. It always seems to get good reviews too and limiting the amount of guests is a great idea. Mr. Sanchos, on the other hand, is (in my opinion) somewhat chaotic. Nice but very crowded. I think you will enjoy your day at Nachi Cocum. I would suggest eating lunch earlier rather than later, when everything is fresh from the kitchen. Just my suggestion based on experience. Basically, get there earlier in the day, relax, eat and do your shopping later.

The Complete Guide to Visiting Cozumel on a Cruise

If you’re taking a cruise, there’s a good chance that it will have a stop in Cozumel. The island is among the most popular tourist destinations on the planet. Roughly 4 million cruise passengers visit the island in a year, coming from Miami, Galveston, New Orleans and more. That makes it among the most popular cruise ports anywhere.

The appeal of Cozumel is obvious. As an island sitting just about 11 miles off of mainland Mexico, it has some of the most beautiful water in the world, numerous resorts, history, shopping, restaurants, and an atmosphere that can only be found in the Caribbean.

Of course, many cruise passengers and other visitors coming to the island aren’t exactly sure what to expect, how to get around, or even the basics like dealing with the language barrier or spending money in Cozumel.

Island Overview

First things first, let’s begin with a quick overview of the Cozumel. As we said, the island sits just 11 miles across the water from the Mexican mainland and the town of Playa del Carmen.

While most people just call everything on the island Cozumel, the main city that you will no doubt visit is called San Miguel. Home to about 80,000 people, San Miguel is a bustling medium-sized town, and gets especially busy when cruise ships are docked (which swells the population of the island).

In town you’ll find everything you’d expect from a city of its size, including supermarkets, restaurants ranging from fast food to fine dining, baseball stadiums, and even a planetarium.

While San Miguel and Cozumel might have been a sleepy tourist spot decades ago, that’s no longer the case. It offers an amazing assortment of things to do for tourists, including everything from visits to Mayan ruins to snorkeling to diving, to shopping and much more.

Of course, so much of visiting Cozumel revolves around the beach and water. Unfortunately, the beaches right near San Miguel (and the cruise ports) aren’t the best. While some small beaches exist in this area , the larger and nicer ones are on the southwest side of the island and on the eastern shore.

With millions of American tourists each year, there is a definite American influence on the island. You’ll notice a number of restaurants that are common in the U.S. English is widely spoken by just about anyone on the tourism industry. Meanwhile, U.S. dollars are also widely accepted, as are credit cards (but it’s helpful to carry cash).

Cruise Piers

When it comes to hosting cruise ships, it’s hard to beat Cozumel. With three different cruise piers, the port can host lots ships at once. That can mean tens of thousands of cruise passengers in town on the same day.

Puerta Maya Pier The most southern pier, Puerta Maya, has the capacity for four cruise ships at once. It’s often visited by Carnival cruise ships. Walking from the ship to the port area can be a lengthy walk — especially in the heat and humidity. As you reach the shore, you’ll enter the port area. Essentially a small city is built here to cater to cruise passengers before they head out to the city and before they return back to the ship.

In the port area you’ll find a number of restaurants such as Fat Tuesday, Three Amigos, and Pancho’s Backyard . There are also a number of souvenir shops, duty-free shopping, and even small stores where you can pick up just about anything you might have forgotten at home. There is also a small beach area (without water access) where you can lounge with a perfect view of the cruise ships.

The Puerta Maya Pier is about 2.5 miles to San Miguel.

International Pier Right next to the Puerta Maya Pier, but just to the north, is the International Pier. It often serves Royal Caribbean ships, including their large Oasis-class ships. Just like its sister pier, the International Pier also has a small “city” that caters to cruise passengers (but you can’t go between the two ports).

There are souvenir shops, restaurants, shows, and more, including a pharmacy in case you forgot something at home. There’s even a Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville right at the port. Be sure to check out the large Cozumel sign (pictured at the top of this article) for a great photo opportunity with the ships in the background. It’s free and makes a memorable souvenir for your trip.

Just behind that sign is a spot to access the water if you want to swim with the cruise ships in the background.

Punta Langosta The third cruise port in Cozumel is a few miles north of the other two. Punta Langosta sits right in downtown San Miguel and is often used by Disney, MSC, and Norwegian Cruise Line. This dock is highly convenient if you plan to spend some time in the city. Instead of having to get a taxi back and forth from the port, restaurants, bars, and shops are all within walking distance.

Getting Around

If you want to get around Cozumel, then you’re likely going to take a taxi. Cabs are at each port as you exit and cruise up and down all the tourist hotspots. If you’re anywhere that tourists go, you’ll be able to hail a cab whenever the ships are in port.

One nice thing about catching a taxi in Cozumel is that prices are set and displayed prominently at the cruise port . The prices are listed in U.S. dollars, and you can pay without having to exchange money. Be sure to bring correct change, plus a few bucks extra for a tip. Prices are based on the number of people taking a ride.

We suggest that you take a photo of the price chart yourself so that you have it with you should there be any discrepancy. Rates are in U.S. dollars.

If it’s nice that there’s a set rate for the taxi so you don’t have to worry about price, the bad part is that the rates are high. Most popular spots can be 10-15 minutes from the cruise piers yet the rides can be pricey in our opinion.

Want to save money? We’ve seen some cruises that partner with shopping centers downtown to offer free rides to their shops from the cruise pier . If you plan to head to town, it’s an easy way to save some cash. Look for a flyer in your stateroom on the day before you port in Cozumel to see if this deal is offered on your cruise.

Things To Do on Cozumel

Cozumel is a playground for those looking to get outdoors at the beach or in the water. But it also has a number of things to do for those who want to experience history, culture, or just relax and be pampered.

Mr. Sanchos Want to spend a day at the beach without having to worry about a thing? Then you might be interested in Mr. Sanchos . It’s an all-inclusive day resort for cruise passengers. Hang out on a beautiful beach under a palapa, or near one of the two pools. Eat and drink to your heart’s content, or just swing in a hammock.

When it’s time to head back, there are showers available to wash off the salt and sand. There is also an aquatic park for the kids (costs extra), as well as paragliding, horseback riding, ATV or jet ski rentals. Prices start at around $68 for adults.

Chankanaab Pronounced Shon-ka-nob, this park is just a short ride from the cruise ships . In fact, you can see them up the coast. At the park there are tons of things to do, including a wide beach with palapas, snorkeling, sea lion shows, botanical gardens with a walking tour, kayaking, tequila tastings, restaurants, ziplining, and even a chance to swim with dolphins. It costs around $25 per person, and that includes a number of free things to do.(Adventures like ziplining and swimming with dolphins are extra.)

Hotels With Day Passes Want to just enjoy the amenities of resorts on Cozumel — such as a private pool, a beach only to hotel guests, showers, meals, and drinks? A number of hotels and resorts on the island (including some right near the cruise ship) offer day passes. Pay a daily fee and you can relax all day. Where to Eat

While you may not realize it, Cozumel has a wide variety of great places to eat. You have hundreds of choices around the island. Here are some of the places that seem to be most popular with cruise passengers.

All-Inclusive/Excursions If you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort with a day pass or you are on an extended excursion, then you are likely going to eat lunch there.

We’ve found that many of these all-inclusive spots offer up some great food that’s also a nice break from the fare on the cruise ship. Tex-Mex specialties are common, so come ready to eat your fill of tacos, nachos, burritos, and more.

If you’re not an adventurous eater, don’t worry; much of it is similar to what you’d find in the United States as many flavors have been adapted to please American tastes. One plus is that the food always seems fresher than what’s on the ship or back home. As well, alcohol and beer seem to be free-flowing. For lunch you aren’t likely to see fine dining, but a fun “beachy” lunch is always tasty.

Port Restaurants We mentioned above that the International and Puerta Maya piers have enclosed areas that cater to cruise passengers. Even Punta Langosta in downtown San Miguel funnels you to a similar area. These spots all have restaurants catering to cruise passengers that want to have a good time.

Across the three you have a number of options, most of which fit into the party atmosphere. They usually serve bar food and Tex-Mex staples, have lots of tropical, fruity drinks, and the music is often pumping. For instance, Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, Fat Tuesday, and Senor Frog’s all have locations within the port areas.

For a quieter time, try Pancho’s Backyard if you are at Puerta Maya. It offers great Mexican food, along with gorgeous views of the cruise ships in port. They also have free wi-fi if you need to connect to check on things back home.

Local Spots If you head out of the port or you aren’t fed on an excursion, there are a number of local spots where you can pop in an grab a bite to eat. Many of these restaurants near the port are waterfront, so you can sit, relax, and have a drink and meal with a fantastic view.

For finding the right spot, we recommend just checking out the menus as you pass. Most restaurants have menus posted outside where you can see if it fits what you want to eat and your budget. But if you’re anywhere near the ports or water, you’ll find all sorts of options.

Top Tips for Visiting Cozumel on a Cruise

Having a call to port in Cozumel is a great time. Here are a few tips on what to expect during your stay…

Bring Cash (With Small Bills) Whether its taking a taxi, or simply providing a few bucks propina (that’s tip in Spanish), it’s a must to pack some cash and small bills when you head to port . Small souvenir stands or other merchants may not be equipped to take credit cards, or you might not feel comfortable swiping your card in an unfamiliar place. Bring plenty of cash to ensure you can cover any expenses that might come up.

Take a Photo of the Taxi Rates At the taxi stand outside the ports, there are large signs with posted rates. Cozumel uses flat rates from the piers to points of interest around the island. Grab a quick picture of the sign before you head to get a cab. This way there is no dispute in the price of the cab ride.

Bottled Water Is Everywhere If you’re worried about drinking the water in Mexico, don’t be. Restaurants and other spots all serve bottled water, and its widely available in stores. You don’t have to ask specifically for bottled water, it’s assumed that’s what you want. As well, ice is made from purified water.

Beach Access Is Limited Near the Cruise Piers Want to just head to the beach on your day in port? Unfortunately, the shore around the cruise piers is rocky and jagged. The “postcard” beaches are further down the island and on the eastern shore. As well, beach access isn’t that great here either. Hotels and development block off each access to get to the water. There are a couple of beaches nearby , but you’re usually best off just going to an all-inclusive where there are open beaches and facilities.

The Two Ports Are  Separate If you arrive at the International Pier or Puerta Maya Pier, you’ll see that they are right next to each other. Even so, they are separated and only available to passengers on ships in that port. To be honest, they offer similar amenities so if you visit one, you’ll get much of the same experience as visiting the other.

Wi-Fi is Available in Some Spots The Internet on the ship can be pricey. One good thing about being in port is that some spots have free wi-fi that you can use to connect. For example, Pancho’s Backyard at Puerta Maya features free service so you can catch up back home while enjoying a margarita. So you can skip the ship’s Internet and check in from the island. As well, many U.S. phone plans now offer service in Mexico.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cozumel Safe to Visit? Safety in Mexico is always a big concern. News headlines spark a lot of fear in people not familiar with the area. To be honest, Mexico is seeing higher violent crime rates even in places that used to be untouched by the violence like Cancun.

That said, we’ve seen little to suggest these sort of problems exist in Cozumel — especially during busy time like when ships are in port. Most violence seems to stay on the mainland and away from the popular tourist areas.

One concern is that a ferry boat that travels between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen had an explosion thought to be a bomb and another ferry with a device attached to it. That was some time ago (2018), and nothing further has occurred regarding the ferry boats.

Yes, Mexico definitely has problems, but for the most part those violent stories you hear don’t occur in Cozumel. Any harm to cruise ship passengers on the island is very rare.

What About Bringing Alcohol Back from Port? Mexico is known for its tequila and there are all sorts of stores that sell bottles to tourists. Want to bring it back on the ship? Know that you won’t be able to enjoy it in your cabin. When you get back on the ship, the alcohol will be checked and held in the ship’s storage. It will be returned to you the last night of your cruise before debarking. So feel free to pick up a bottle or two to enjoy back home, but any margaritas you drink will be from the ship’s bar.

Do I Need Pesos? What About Knowing Spanish? As we said at the start, 4 million cruise passengers visit Cozumel each year. The majority of those folks are Americans. To cater to these tourists, U.S. dollars are widely accepted. You should be aware of the exchange rate to know if you’re getting a good deal (currently about 17 pesos to one dollar), but your dollars will be taken just about everywhere.

As for Spanish, it’s always nice to know a little bit, but again there’s no need to worry. English is widely spoken anywhere there are tourists, including restaurants, shops, and taxis.

You’ll want to confirm the rate before you head back (I suggest taking a photo of the fares before leaving). It’s VERY easy to catch a cab. They are everywhere.

We’re going on a very short cruise from California to Mexico this spring. Do we need passports for our kids, even if we don’t get off the ship? — Ben, Springfield, Va.

There’s a difference between what you need and what is a good idea to have.

Let’s begin with the first: On most cruise lines and for most itineraries, a voyage that starts and ends at the same U.S. port and stays in the Western Hemisphere will not require any American citizen — child or adult — to have a passport.

These are called closed-loop cruises, and they only need proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate plus a government-issued photo ID, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection . For people under 16, a birth certificate will suffice. Popular cruise lines including Carnival , Royal Caribbean and Norwegian detail their requirements and any exceptions online.

A sailing that leaves from one U.S. port and ends at another — or starts in the United States and ends at a foreign destination — would not be classified as a closed-loop cruise. Everyone, including kids, would need a passport in that case.

There are some caveats, warns Teresa Tennant, senior vice president of the travel planning company Cruise Specialists . Some cruise companies, including Holland America Line and Princess Cruises , say that all members of a party must have a passport if minors are traveling with only one adult.

Some other cruise lines, such as the luxury Regent Seven Seas Cruises, require a passport for all sailings.

“It’s important to always check with the cruise line, because they can set their own rules that are actually above and beyond,” Tennant said.

Customs and Border Protection also urges travelers to check with their cruise company, travel agent and destination to confirm what’s required to enter foreign countries on an itinerary.

Whether or not you are required to have a passport, cruise lines and experts say it’s smart to have one before setting sail. The task isn’t quite as onerous as it used to be, now that wait times have returned to pre-pandemic norms of six to eight weeks for routine service and two to three weeks for the expedited process.

Cruise lines say they strongly recommend that passengers opt for the passport over other forms of identification.

“A passport is the hassle-free, gold standard for traveling between countries,” Royal Caribbean says on its website. “Boarding and disembarking through customs with a passport is usually faster than other types of ID documents.”

The U.S. State Department says travelers might need their passport “in the event of an unexpected medical evacuation or if the ship docks at an alternate port.” Travelers would also need their passports if they showed up late in a foreign port and the ship left without them — which has happened to some U.S. passengers recently.

“You should bring your passport even if your cruise says you won’t need it,” the State Department says on its information page for cruise ship passengers.

Colleen McDaniel, editor in chief of the news and review site Cruise Critic , said in an email that it would be much more difficult to get home without a passport if someone had to leave the ship.
