Cape Town’s best shops

Merchants on Long

1.  Merchants on Long

What is it?  An ode to the best of the continent, Merchants on Long opened in 2010 in a historic building on Long Street as a showcase of pan-African design. Stocking everything from clothing to shoes to homeware, it’s said to be the first concept store to shine a light on the breadth of African fashion and design under one roof. That includes Cape Town-based sustainable swimwear store Akina, Ethiopian fashion label Lemlem and Kenya-based brand Zuri, amongst many others.

Why go? To find exquisite items like Zulu-inspired sandals, distinctive MaXhosa knits by Laduma Ngxokolo and gorgeous woven baskets made to exacting standards by craftspeople, artisans and designers.

Mungo

2.  Mungo

What is it? Not to be confused with Mungo & Jemima over at the V&A Waterfront, Mungo is the inner-city boutique for a family-owned textile mill on the Garden Route. Their kikois, towels and linens grace many of Africa’s leading safari lodges and hotels.

Why go? Mungo’s unique textile designs reflect Africa’s rich heritage of weaving, while incorporating early American weaving patterns and Mediterranean and Provençal hues. Mungo works exclusively with natural fibres and in 2020 became the first textile-weaving mill in South Africa to be certified organic by the stringent Global Organic Textile Standard. Their high-quality products make a perfect souvenir or gift from your time in SA.

AAFRICAA

3.  AAFRICAA

What is it?  A design emporium in the heart of the V&A Waterfront, offering an upscale (sometimes with prices to match) collection of curated contemporary African design.

Why go?  If you love design and creativity with local flair, you’ll fall in love with the 450-square-metre retail space of AAFRICAA . The focus is firmly on hand-crafted, artisan creations that celebrate the creative energy of Africa. The collection of colourful clothing and hand-woven basketware is particularly lust-worthy.

Veldskoen

4.  Veldskoen

What is it?  A mash-up of a museum and retail concept store by a much-loved local brand. Traditionally made of rawhide leather on a rubber sole, veldskoen –pronounced FELT-skoon – are as South African as braaivleis, biltong and the ‘Bokke'.  Veldskoen gives the classic an upmarket make-over, and at their museum-store you can learn all about the colourful history of South Africa’s most famous footwear.

Why go?  Since launching their range of colourfully-soled veldskoen in 2016, the brand has gone global: Prince Harry was snapped wearing a pair and Matthew McConaughey is a fan. Today up to 150 000 pieces of Veldskoen shoes and apparel fly out of the warehouse each year. You can browse and admire the brand’s range of shoes, because if you’re going to head out and explore Cape Town, and South Africa, you might as well be doing it in a pair of vellies.

Mungo & Jemima

5.  Mungo & Jemima

What is it?  Since  Kirsty Bannerman and Marian Park-Ross  first opened the doors to their inner-city boutique in 2008, Mungo & Jemima has offered a showcase of leading South African fashion designers, and in the process become something of an arbiter of style for a laid-back South African look.

Why go?  To discover clothing with a voice, imagined and crafted by some of South Africa’s best-loved designers. You’ll find the shelves at their new flagship store in the V&A Waterfront filled with the likes of Missibaba, Dyad, Ora, A Bird Named Frank, Verse, Lichen & Leaf, Yellow, Lorne and more. Beyond the collection of dresses, jumpsuits and jackets, also look out for an impressive array of accessories.

6.  Hemelhuijs

What is it?   The creative home of acclaimed designer, chef and restaurateur Jacques Erasmus. Hemelhuijs is most famous as a delightful inner-city eatery – the brunch and lunch game is strong here – but there’s also a worthwhile retail component that’s worth a look.

Why go?  Well, first, to eat. Erasmus is a much-loved fixture of the city’s daytime dining scene; as famous for his Eggs Benedict and fresh juices as the seasonally-inspired contemporary main courses. It’s a space where there’s enormous attention to detail, from napery to crockery and, happily, you can take much of it home with you thanks to the small retail section selling Erasmus’ bespoke range of beautiful home wares.

Skinny laMinx

7.  Skinny laMinx

What is it?  The inner-city showroom for the colourful range of eye-catching fabrics created by illustrator Heather Moore. Her designs have found a home worldwide, but the heart of it all is here, on a tiny side road in the heart of Cape Town.

Why go?  This charming and quirky showroom just off Bree Street offers the full range of creations from the world of Skinny laMinx . You’ll find bolts of colourful fabric along with the wonderful range of products they are fashioned into for sale, and shipping worldwide. You’ll be hard-pressed to choose between the colourful cushions, quirky aprons, offbeat bags, cute kiddies dresses and must-have book totes. It’s a must-visit for memorable souvenir shopping.

Sealand Experience Store

8.  Sealand Experience Store

What is it? A proudly South African company creating bags, backpacks, duffels and accessories from upcycled yacht sails, kite sails, sustainable cotton and recycled nylon. Jack Johnson, with his passion for 'The 3 R's', would love this stuff.

Why go? With a focus on sustainability and ocean conservation, Sealand manufactures its high-end bags and accessories in the seaside suburb of Hout Bay, but the best place to experience the eye-catching bags, clothing and accessories is at the Sealand Experience Store in De Waterkant, close to the city centre.

Afraid of Mice

9.  Afraid of Mice

What is it?  A carefully curated boutique on Buitenkant Street fusing big-brand vintage and pre-owned collectable items at fair prices. The idea, say the owners, is for this tiny shop to be full of items you wish 'your mother had kept for you'. Open Monday to Saturday.

Why go? Because   Afraid of Mice isn’t stuffy, dusty or unattainable. With a little luck you can find stellar-quality items from fashion heavyweights such as Salvatore Ferragamo, Diane von Fürstenberg, Oscar de la Renta, Mulberry, Nina Ricci or Prada, to name but a few.

Watershed, V&A Waterfront

10.  Watershed, V&A Waterfront

What is it?  The V&A Waterfront – where you’ll also find the Time Out Market Cape Town – is one of Africa’s most popular destinations, with more than 24 million visitors per year. While there’s no end of dining and activities on, the V&A is also a retail haven boasting hundreds of stores. But to truly tap into Cape creativity, you’ll want to go start at The Watershed .

Why go?  Unlike the global brands in other malls at the V&A, The Watershed is a proudly South African showcase of local creativity. There are more than 150 tenants here, mostly small businesses, artisans and creators showcasing unique home ware, ceramics, fashion, jewellery and accessories.

Kat van Duinen

11.  Kat van Duinen

What is it?  A luxury design house that focuses on fine clothes and ‘exotic’ leathers for its bespoke handbags.

Why go?  The attention to detail and commitment to fairly compensating staff and artisans is admirable. Kat van Duinen is one of the few places where you can buy an ostrich-skin bag, clutch or tote and trust that both the environment and the people involved have been taken into account throughout the process.

House of Chommies Concept Store

12.  House of Chommies Concept Store

What is it? In South African lingo a ‘chommie’ is your best mate. Your wing(wo)man. Your BFF. They’re all terms which can equally be applied to any faithful hound – a perfect fit, then, for the House of Chommies Concept Store , which offers bespoke pet accessories for the furry family member(s) in your life.

Why go? Chommies adds a dollop of colourful luxury to the world of pet accessories, with a range of collars, harnesses, travel mats and other items. Each is handcrafted in Cape Town by local artisans, and features African-inspired bold colours, textures and patterns.

Quagga Rare Books & Art

13.  Quagga Rare Books & Art

What is it?  A treasure trove of first-edition and rare books, Africana, old maps and general objects and ephemera. Whether you’re hunting for a vintage first edition, or simply browsing Kalk Bay's colourful Main Road, Quagga Rare Books & Art is a must-visit.

Why go?  For more than 25 years this family-run business has traded in the historic and the arcane, the dusty, musty and mysterious. From leather-bound tomes to centuries-old sea charts, paintings and peculiarities, Quagga is a delightful ramble through the myriad oddities Africa has to offer. They’ll help you find that unicorn you’ve been searching for, or welcome you for a wander through their Aladdin’s Cave of curiosities.

Anpa

14.  Anpa

What is it?  An artisan jewellery boutique based in the quaint fishing village of Kalk Bay, offering the opportunity to consult directly with the jeweller on bespoke pieces. With a focus on organic, hand-finished works, Anpa is known for its sculptural statement pieces that use gold, silver, Tanzanite, African emeralds and myriad precious stones. Open Tuesday to Saturday.

Why go?  For unique designs infused with African inspiration or for the great-value custom jewellery, which can also be created on short notice. Call ahead for a consultation.

KLûK CGDT

15.  KLĂ»K CGDT

What is it?  The OG of South African haute couture, with local and international accolades to prove it. The flagship store in Bree Street stocks runway-inspired approachable designs for work, fun and special occasions. Open Monday to Saturday (custom designs by appointment only).

Why go?  Simply because it’s a must-stop for fashionistas of all kinds. While KLûK CGDT is known for its bespoke, tailor-made gowns, the ready-to-wear racks are all about quality materials and expert craftsmanship.

Carole Nevin

16.  Carole Nevin

What is it: A studio and retail space close to the beachside suburb of Muizenberg, where shoppers can watch the talented artists at work as they create the wide range of hand-painted textiles that have made Carole Nevin a household name in Cape Town.

Why go: For upscale textiles – from table linen and napery to cushion covers – with a unique touch, whether it’s for your own home or a souvenir from the Mother City. Carole Nevin has been in the textile business for more than 20 years, and her range of hand-painted textiles celebrates the colours of Africa.

Stefania Morland

17.  Stefania Morland

What is it?  Fun, high-end fashion by a designer who’s stood the test of time. The Kloof Street store is discreet and in-line with the designer’s ethos of creating beautiful, expertly constructed clothing without being loud or outlandish.

Why go?  While the ready-to-wear items attract the style-savvy, Stefania Morland is known for her custom-made, elegant and customary wedding dresses, tuxedos and bridal-party outfits. Look forward to a unique collection of playful and timeless high-fashion pieces.

Pichulik

18.  Pichulik

What is it? An ethical jewellery atelier combining pan-African inspiration with a global aesthetic.

Why go? To shop for striking sculptural jewellery that’s sure to be a talking point. When über-luxurious Dubai mega-hotel Atlantis The Royal opened in 2023, with Beyoncé providing the evening’s entertainment, the security bracelets for the star-studded event were made by none other than Pichulik . That gives a measure of the brand’s cachet abroad, so it’s a treat to enjoy it on home-turf, at the elegant boutique just off Bree Street.

The 9 Best Independently-Owned Shops to Spend Your Vacation Money in Cape Town

cape town tourism shop

Along with Cape Town’s natural splendors , the city’s metropolitan attractions only add to its appeal. Top notch restaurants and a burgeoning music and arts scene ensure the city is always ripe with concerts, events, and trendy dining options—along with a well-established selection of independent shops and labels that guarantee a not-to-be-missed shopping experience.

Despite the fact that cheap imports have led to the loss of nearly two-thirds of jobs within Cape Town’s clothing sector, local designers and brands continue to push forward and weave an exceptionally beautiful design culture. A dedication to regionally produced goods reigns supreme at almost every boutique and concept store, but even without their homegrown appeal, the products are something special. From brightly colored printed clothing; industrial handcrafted jewelry; ceramic masterpieces; and innovative, eco-friendly accessories—Cape Town’s retail offerings aren’t simply run-of-the-mill souvenirs. They’re full of legitimately stylish pieces that’ll have you dying to return to the city for more.

Below, nine of the best spots to shop them all.

cape town tourism shop

102 Wale St, Schotsche Kloof, Cape Town, 8000, South Africa

Located in Cape Town’s colorful Bo-Kaap neighborhood, Bo-Op carries a relatively small but diverse selection of local goods and designers. Highlights include Float Apparel , a buzzy new streetwear label; Ballo , an eco-conscious sunglasses brand; Meraki , a jewelry line that uses raw stones, recycled brass, and sterling silver to create artistic trinkets; and Good Good Good , a label that crafts elevated streetwear-style separates from luxury woven fabrics. As an added perk, a small Deluxe Coffee shop, where you can get an excellent cup of joe, is adjoined to the store.

Merchants on Long

34 Long St, CBD, Cape Town, 8001, South Africa

With a store design that’s almost as good as the products it stocks, Merchants on Long is a must for design and fashion nerds alike. The brilliantly curated concept store (it claims to be the first one in Africa) carries upscale products designed and made in Africa and is the place to go if you’re looking for a few extra special pieces. Brands carried at Merchants include Thebe Magugu , ethical fashion brand Lemlem , Anna Roshholt Jewelry , Brother Vellies , Chulaap , and more. You can shop everything from brightly patterned dresses to premium leather goods to traditional desert booties.

Chandler House

53 Church St, City Bowl, Cape Town, 8001, South Africa

Entering Chandler House feels a bit like walking into the apartment of an eclectic art enthusiast with throwback design taste. The walls of the gallery-slash-studio-slash-shop are covered from top to bottom with framed artwork by local artists, all of which are for sale, yet somehow the space doesn’t feel overcrowded. If a sketch or painting isn’t what you’re after (there are tons to choose from, and they are all gorgeous), the shop also carries ceramics, linens, stationary, and more, all by local artisans.

cape town tourism shop

Mungo & Jemima

108 Longstreet, Cape Town City Centre, Cape Town, 8001, South Africa

Known for stocking playful offerings created exclusively by South African designers, Mungo & Jemima is a hit for pieces that are both affordable and fun. Think sloth and tiger prints, bright and breezy rompers, necklaces crafted from neon threads, and swimsuits blooming with florals. Their flagship store is on Longstreet, but you can find other locations at the V&A Waterfront and in Stellenbosch.

66 Albert Rd, Woodstock, Cape Town, 7925, South Africa

Crafted from locally-sourced leather and canvas, Chapel bags feel both luxurious and practical, and boast a paradoxically modern yet old school charm. At their flagship store in Woodstock, Cape Town’s up-and-coming fashion and arts neighborhood, you’ll find supple leather backpacks, tote bags, laptop bags, and crossbody bags, as well as a bucket bag that rivals Mansur Gavriel’s signature style , but for half the price. Sunglasses and small leather goods are also up for grabs, so if you’re looking for a dose of classic cool, this is your spot.

27 Somerset Rd, De Waterkant, Cape Town, 8005, South Africa

This is a shop that could hold its own alongside the best design stores in Brooklyn. Raw woods, weathered metals, and natural textiles make up the bulk of its offerings, which range from distressed shelves and glass lighting fixtures, to baking roller pins and minimalist-style ceramics. The store also sells homemade treats like fudge and ginger biscuits, and stocks some uber-cozy style basics that would make even the coolest of Copenhagen style stars swoon.

cape town tourism shop

22 Hope St, Gardens, Cape Town, 8001, South Africa

Their dedication to sustainability and championing local craftsmen renders Love Milo a must-visit for beautiful and ethically made homeware. The store carries cushions, runners, cloth napkins, pinboards, cutlery, bags, and more, but the highlights are certainly their ceramics. Bowls, mugs, saucers and the like are decorated with spindly tree branches, trails of ants, delicate dragonfly wings, and other beautiful scenes from nature. Many pieces come with a wooden spoon or saucer, depending on its purpose.

Dress Me Up

77 Roodebloem Rd, Woodstock, Cape Town, 7925, South Africa

For a vintage shop full of special treasures, head to Dress Me Up in Woodstock. When you walk in, you’ll likely notice bedazzled captain’s hats and a lot of sequin-embellished pieces, which are the creations of the shop’s owner, Sally Louw. If you’re in Cape Town for AfrikaBurn or want to pick up a unique piece for another festival you’ll be attending, this is an optimal place to look. Along with the funky, up-cycled pieces are classic vintage styles, from silky floral dresses and lace-up boots, to embroidered denim and 80s-style blazers.

The Watershed

V & A Waterfront, 17 Dock Rd, V & A Waterfront, Cape Town, 8002, South Africa

Containing over 150 shops selling locally-crafted goods, the Watershed is a hole-in-one for excellent souvenirs and stylish wardrobe additions. Located at the V&A Waterfront and near the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (two of Cape Town’s must-visit attractions), it’s as convenient as a shopping stop can get. Whether you’re looking for handcrafted rugs and fabrics or colorful strands of beads, sleek linen dresses or sophisticated jewelry, the Watershed will have something to pique your fancy and then some.

Set between mountains and the sea, Cape Town flaunts its natural beauty with pride. Iconic Table Mountain is one of the city's most famous attractions, botanical gardens beckon from its slopes, and the city's long stretches of beautiful beaches are some of South Africa's best.

Along the rugged coast, scenic drives offer a chance to see penguins waddle on pristine beaches, and Cape Point is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site with one of the richest floral kingdoms in the world.

Table Mountain

Highlight: Cape Town's most iconic landmark, you can either hike to the top or take a cable car for amazing views

Rising 1,087 meters south of the city center, flat-topped Table Mountain is the most photographed landmark in South Africa and a constant reminder that nature is queen in this stunning seaside city. The mountain forms the northern end of the Cape Peninsula and lies within Table Mountain National Park.

The park protects an astounding diversity of plants and more than 1,470 flower species, as well as animals such as cute snub-nosed dassies (rock hyraxes), caracals, and baboons. Within the park, Devil's Peak flanks the mountain on the east, and Lion's Head on the west, while the crags known as the Twelve Apostles loom over the beach resorts on the Atlantic coast.

A layer of clouds, called the "tablecloth" frequently cloaks the mountain's peak, but when the clouds clear, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of Cape Town and the entire Cape Peninsula from the summit. Bring a sweater as it can be cold and windy at the top.

For those short on time, and energy, a revolving cableway climbs to the summit, covering the distance of 1,244 meters in seven minutes. The cableway runs daily — except in high winds, so it's a good idea to check the website or call for current conditions before heading out. Also to avoid long lines, try booking tickets online.

At the upper station of the cableway, a café features a small viewing terrace and serves as the starting point of three short walks, which highlight the gigantic scale of the landscape. Those wishing to summit the mountain on foot can choose between more than 350 different routes varying in difficulty.

Depending on the starting point, the climb takes between two to four hours. For superb views of Table Mountain and the best vantage point to photograph this iconic landmark, hike or drive up Signal Hill or Lion's Head — both offer stunning views from their summits.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens

Highlights: Home to more than 20,000 native South African plants, set on a sprawling reserve with walking trails

In a beautiful setting on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens are part of the Cape Floristic Region UNESCO World Heritage site . The site was bequeathed to the state by Cecil Rhodes in 1902 and the gardens were established in 1913 to preserve the country's indigenous flora — one of the first botanical gardens in the world with this mission.

More than 20,000 native South African plant species are collected, grown, and studied in the hilly 528-hectare nature reserve of indigenous forest and fynbos.

Of particular historical interest are a hedge of wild almond trees planted by Jan van Riebeeck in 1660 and an avenue of camphor and fig trees planted by Cecil Rhodes in 1898. The flowers, shrubs, and trees are arranged so that a show of blossoms and color brightens the gardens throughout the year.

Don't miss the proteas; the scented garden; the impressive collection of cycads; the Sculpture Garden; and the Botanical Society Conservatory, a custom-built greenhouse with plants from arid regions. Well-marked trails thread through the wooded slopes, and the Tree Canopy Walkway provides panoramic views across the mountain-backed gardens. One of the trails leads through a ravine to the summit of Table Mountain. In summer, the gardens make an evocative venue for outdoor concerts.

Green thumbs and garden lovers should also visit Company's Garden, an oasis of exotic trees, flowers, aviaries, and ponds in the heart of the city. While here, visitors can also explore the Iziko South African Museum and Planetarium and the Iziko National Gallery.

Clifton and Camps Bay Beaches

Highlights: Clifton's four beaches are Cape Town's most impressive; located in coves accessed via a long set of stairs, they are sheltered from the wind

About six kilometers from the city center, the beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton lure the buff, the bronzed, and the beautiful — as well as the big bucks. At Clifton, Cape Town's St. Tropez, some of the city's priciest real estate overlooks four gleaming white-sand beaches flanked by smooth granite boulders and washed by sparkling, but crisp, blue seas.

First Beach is a favorite volleyball venue and offers decent surf when the conditions are right. Just south of Clifton, trendy Camp's Bay sports another stunning beach, backed by the magnificent Twelve Apostles and the distinctive peak of Lion's Head .

People-watching is an art along this pretty palm-lined stretch as well as at the chic cafes and boutiques fringing Victoria Street — especially during weekends and holidays when locals and tourists throng here to soak up the scene.

Camp's Bay and Clifton's Fourth Beach boast coveted Blue Flag status awarded for clean water, safety, and environmental management making them a great choice for families as well.

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront

Highlights : One of Cape Town's top tourist attractions, it's a wonderful place to spend an afternoon shopping, dining, and wandering

Stretching around two harbor basins, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is a buzzing entertainment quarter reminiscent of Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco.

Once a scruffy fishing harbor, this reimagined waterfront district is now one of the city's top tourist attractions, and many of the old buildings have been preserved and restored. Millions of visitors a year flock here to the shops, jazz venues, restaurants, hotels, theaters, drama school, cinemas, and museums.

Sports fans will love the Springbok Experience Rugby Museum , which traces the story of South African Rugby through interactive exhibits.

Two Oceans Aquarium features more than 300 species of fish from the Atlantic and Indian oceans, in particular from the area around the Cape of Good Hope. Highlights include a touch tank, penguin encounter, predator exhibit, and diving experiences, which allow visitors to view fascinating marine creatures up close.

Trips to Robben Island leave from the Nelson Mandela Gateway on the waterfront, but anyone is welcome to explore the museum exhibits here.

West of the waterfront, the trendy Green Point precinct is also home to the lovely Green Point Urban Park with its biodiversity garden as well as the Cape Town Stadium , which hosted many FIFA World Cup matches in 2010.

Address: 19 Dock Road, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town

The Cape Wheel

Highlight : Riding the giant Cape Wheel with 360-degree bird's eye city views

Walking around the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, it is impossible to miss the Cape Wheel in the Market Square area. The giant wheel features 30 fully enclosed cabins with air-conditioning that take you on about a 15-minute ride in four loops with 360-degree bird's-eye views.

At the top of the wheel, you'll be about 120 feet above the ground, and the panoramic views of Cape Town's city center and harbor, Table Mountain, the Cape Town Stadium in nearby Green Point, and even the Paarl Mountains is stunning on a clear day.

The Cape Wheel is also wheelchair accessible, with two specially adapted cabins. The wheel operates daily from 9am to 7pm.

Robben Island

Highlight: It's a somber highlight, but important to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site preserving the cell at the brutal prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years during the apartheid era

For nearly 400 years, Robben Island in Table Bay, was a brutal prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years in a tiny cell during the apartheid era. Today, the island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-see attraction for anyone interested in South African history.

Tours to the island begin with multimedia exhibits in the museum at the Nelson Mandela Gateway on the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront before travelers board vessels to the island. The boat trip takes about 30 minutes to an hour depending on weather conditions and can be rough during big swells.

While on the island, visitors tour the maximum security prison, Mandela's former cell , and the lime quarry where prisoners were forced to endure back-breaking labor. The interesting part about the tour is that the guides are former prisoners of Robben Island who share their experiences and offer insight into the atrocities of apartheid and the power of forgiveness.

After leaving this hellish six-square-kilometer island, Mandela said, "As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison." These wise words are even more potent after a tour here.

The Cape Town Townships Tour including Robben Island , gives visitors an overview of South Africa's past and present. The full-day small group guided tour includes a round-trip ferry ride to Robben Island, a visit to Cape Town's District Six Museum , and the communities of nearby townships of Langa and Gugulethu.

Chapman's Peak Drive

Highlight: Drive it at sunset when the panoramic viewpoints are made even more stunning by the fire show in the sky

About 25 kilometers from the city center, Chapman's Peak Drive, affectionately called "Chappies" by the locals, is one of the most jaw-dropping driving routes in the world.

Cut into the sheer face of Chapman's Peak, which plunges to the sea, this spectacular toll road snakes its way for about nine kilometers between Noordhoek and Hout Bay passing panoramic Chapman's Peak point along the way. With 114 curves carved into the rock face, some perched more than 500 meters above the sea, this is not a route for those prone to motion sickness.

Around sunset, cars cram along the panoramic viewpoints as sightseers stake a spot to watch the sun sink while sipping a cool drink in the time-honored South African tradition known as "sundowners." Look for southern right whales and dolphins in the sparkling Atlantic Ocean below, and drive slowly and carefully. The road was closed on and off for several years due to rockfall dangers, but it has now been stabilized and is open every day — except during severe weather events.

As well as being used as a location for TV commercials, Chapman's Peak Drive is the setting for the popular Cape Argus Cycle Race and Two Oceans Marathon . After admiring the magnificent sea views, hungry travelers can feast on fresh fish at one of the excellent seafood restaurants in Hout Bay.

Signal Hill and the Noon Gun

Highlights: Stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Town, and Table Bay from the top; come for sunset

Five minutes drive west of the city center, Signal Hill offers stunning views over Cape Town, Table Bay, and the glittering Atlantic Ocean from its 350-meter summit. The hill forms the body of the adjacent Lion's Head peak and was named for its historical use when signal flags were flown from here to send messages to approaching ships.

Many locals and visitors drive up to watch the sunset and stay to see the shimmering lights of Cape Town ignite after dark. At noon every day (except Sundays and public holidays), a cannon activated by an electronic impulse from the Observatory fires a single shot.

In earlier days this " noon gun " served to give the exact time to ships anchored in the bay. Tourists are welcome to attend a free presentation on the history of the Noon Gun at the Lion Battery and then stay to watch the firing.

Those headed to the top of the hill for sunset views should take a jacket as it can be chilly after the sun dips. On busy weekends and holidays go early to score a parking spot.

Food in the Old Biscuit Mill in Cape Town

Highlight: Visit on the weekend for the Neighbourgoods Market, where you can buy directly from local designers and artisans

Located in the heart of Cape Town's trendy college neighborhood, Woodstock, the Old Biscuit Mill is open all week but is especially lively on weekends when the Neighbourgoods Market happens.

Self-described as a community for talented people to collaborate and share their passions, from food and art to clothing and homemade goods, the Old Biscuit Mill is where you'll find some of South Africa's most creative artists and designers.

On the grounds, you'll find a range of one-of-a-kind restaurants, food stalls, workshop spaces, and designer stores. Every Saturday and Sunday from 9am, the Neighbourgoods Market takes over the parking lots.

It offers a full market vibe, with local artisans and designers selling their creations. There are also a host of food and drink vendors. Festivals also happen throughout the year at the Old Biscuit Mill.

Address: 375 Albert Road, Cape Town

Great White Shark Cage Dives

Highlight: It's an adrenaline rush to come face-to-face with great white sharks, but the diving is a controversial subject

In the chilly waters off Cape Town's coast, thrill seekers can come face-to-face with one of the ocean's most feared predators: great white sharks. Protected by the thick bars of an iron cage, divers score a hefty dose of adrenaline as these magnificent creatures swim within inches of the bars.

Tour operators in Cape Town offer shark cage dives in areas such as Simon's Town , Dyer Island , Mossel Bay, Seal Island , and Gansbaai, the "Great White Shark Capital of the World." The best time to see these magnificent creatures is between April and October. No diving certification is needed, since divers are enclosed in the custom-built cages, and part of the funds go towards shark research and conservation.

Those who prefer to appreciate these awe-inspiring creatures from a distance can watch all the excitement from the boat. Seal, dolphin, penguin, and whale-watching tours are also available for less daring animal lovers.

City Hall & the Castle of Good Hope

Highlights: Shopping Greenmarket Square for African handicrafts like wooden giraffes, stone sculptures, and colorful batiks

History buffs can visit two notable historic buildings within five minutes' walk of each other in central Cape Town. Built in 1905, Cape Town City Hall is a striking mix of Italian Neo-Renaissance and British colonial style. The 60-meter-high bell tower, with a carillon installed in 1923, was modeled on Big Ben in London.

Highlights of the interior include the beautiful mosaic floors, marble staircase, and impressive stained glass. Notice the balcony overlooking Grand Parade where Nelson Mandela, the country's future president, addressed a jubilant crowd in 1990 after 27 years in prison. Music lovers should also try to attend a performance by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra based here.

Across the road from the Grand Parade, The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest surviving stone building in South Africa. It was built in 1666-79 as the residence of the Governor and for the protection of the early settlers, but the castle, which is in the form of a five-pointed star, was never exposed to attack. A highlight here is the William Fehr Collection , which includes pictures, porcelain, fine glass, ceramics, and furniture of the 17th to 19th centuries from South Africa, Europe, and Asia.

A short walk from the fort up the shopping hub of Longmarket Street leads to Greenmarket Square, an atmospheric little cobbled plaza, with a number of Art Deco buildings as a backdrop. Shoppers can browse the small flea market held every day of the week here except Sunday.

Canal Walk

Highlight: Head here on a rainy day to peruse some 400 shops selling everything from clothing to kids' toys

South Africa's third largest shopping center, Canal Walk is located just off the N1 in Cape Town's Century City suburb. With around 400 shops selling everything from clothing to jewelry, homewares to music, and kids' toys, there is no shortage of products on sale here.

Wandering around the mall is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon, especially if the weather isn't great. The mall has an opulent vibe and is bustling inside. If you are in the mood for a film, there is a movie theater here. Dining options are also varied. Grab a quick bite at the Food Court or a sit-down meal at one of the many restaurants spread around the mall.

Address: 490 Century Blvd, Century City, Cape Town

The Groote Schuur Hospital which houses The Heart of Cape Town Museum

Highlight: The world's first heart transplant took place in Cape Town; this museum honors the world-changing medical procedure

In the Groote Schuur Hospital, The Heart of Cape Town Museum opened in 2007 to honor the 40th anniversary of the first heart transplant performed here by Christiaan Barnard. Knowledgeable docents take visitors on a fascinating two-hour tour to see recreations of the operating facilities in the actual rooms where the surgery took place.

The tours also explore everything from the ethical implications of the time to the history of the recipient and the donor. Even visitors with no medical background appreciate learning about the history of this life-saving procedure.

Old Town House

Highlight: The Bo-Kaap Museum illustrates 19 th -century Muslim life in Cape Town

Iziko Museums of South Africa comprises 11 museums governed by a council appointed by the Minister of Arts and Culture.

A top museum in this group is the Bo-Kaap Museum in the Bo-Kaap District , an old Malay quarter with brightly-painted two-story houses that are still occupied by the descendants of slaves who were brought to the Cape from the East Indies in the second half of the 17th century. This excellent museum illustrates aspects of 19th-century Muslim life in a rare early Cape-Dutch house circa 1763. A room on the premises houses a collection of carts and carriages.

The Old Town House is another popular attraction in the museum group. It was originally built in 1755 in a Dutch-Rococo style and lies in Cape Town's hub on the west side of Green Market Square . Formerly Cape Town's City Hall, the Old Town House now displays a collection of pictures presented to the country by Sir Max Michaelis in 1914, consisting mainly of works by 17th-century Dutch and Flemish masters, including Frans Hals, Jan Steen, Jacob van Ruysdael, and Jan van Goyen.

Another highlight of the group is the Koopmans-de Wet House, built in 1701 on a U-shaped ground-plan, with a façade by Louis Thibault (1771). The original interior has been preserved and gives a vivid impression of the lifestyle of a successful 18th-century businessman. Also in the group, the South African Museum and Planetarium and the National Gallery, in Company's Garden , are worth a visit for natural history buffs and budding astronomers.

The District Six Museum

Highlight: Uses multi-media documentary style and sound to introduce guests to this vanished neighborhood's history

In 1966, 70,000 residents of multi-ethnic District Six were displaced when the South African government decided the community was to be a white one.

This poignant District Six Museum honors the people of this now-vanished district. On the museum's floor is a large-scale map where former residents are encouraged to label their old homes and features of their neighborhood.

The museum's permanent exhibit is known as Digging Deeper and is focused on documenting various parts of District Six life through a moving visual experience that incorporates multi-media documentary, digital, and sound elements. The exhibit introduces guests to the area's former residents, and tells their life histories through various themes.

Address: 25A Buitenkant Street, Cape Town

Art exhibit at the Zeitz MOCAA

Highlight: Home to the world's largest collection of African contemporary art

Opened in late 2017, the Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) is the largest museum on the continent dedicated to African contemporary art in the world. Housed in a converted 9,500-square-meter grain silo with the backdrop of the iconic Table Mountain on the Victoria and Alfred waterfront, this visually stunning museum has nine floors with over 100 galleries.

This world-class museum, on par with New York's MoMA or London's Tate, features 21st-century art from all around Africa and its diaspora, including the private collection of Jochen Zeitz, German-born former CEO of Puma and conservationist.

Some of the most outstanding collections include a series of photographs featuring intriguing eyewear from Kenyan Cyrus Kabiru, colorful and playful imagery from South African Athi-Patra Ruga, and a fantastic woven wall installation made from discarded materials by Ghana-born El Anatsui.

The museum also houses centers for photography, performing arts, and the moving image; an art education institute; a curatorial training program; and a Costume Institute. Entrance is half-price from 4pm to 9pm every first Friday of the month.

Brightly colored houses in Bo-Kaap

Highlight : Strolling the hilly neighborhood looking at the brightly colored houses

Gently rolling streets lined with brightly colored houses greet visitors in the Cape Malay (commonly referred to as Bo-Kaap) neighborhood.

Located in the heart of the city at the foot of Signal Hill , this vibrant area is home to Cape Town's Muslim community, consisting of those who have descended from the "Cape Malays," slaves brought by Dutch settlers from Indonesia, Malaysia, and other African countries.

The residents are passionate about preserving their history and the buildings, and visitors often see signs stating, "This Heritage Site is Under Threat," in an attempt to discourage gentrification.

Learn about the neighborhood's origin at the Bo-Kaap Museum , housed in the neighborhood's oldest building. Enjoy authentic Malay curry at a local restaurant and cool off with ice cream before hitting some stores for a little shopping.

Don't miss taking Instagram-worthy shots in front of the colorful houses (as long as you aren't capturing the residents in your pictures). Bo-Kaap can be reached by foot from downtown Cape Town or the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront or by cab from other areas.

Surfers at Muizenberg

Highlights : Surfing Muizenberg's consistent waves; the water here is slightly warmer than on the Atlantic side

Famous for its brightly colored beach huts and excellent surfing , Muizenberg is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Cape Town. It is located on the False Bay side of the peninsula, so the water here is marginally warmer than at Camps Bay Beach for instance.

The beach is Blue-Flag-rated and one of the best places to visit for beginner surfers to practice riding waves — the surf here is consistent, and the waves aren't huge.

You'll still likely want to wear a wet suit, however, as the water is still very cold, even in summer. These can be rented at a number of shops in the town set behind the long beachfront. You can also rent surfboards and book lessons from a number of companies around town.

The colorful beach huts that you've likely seen in photos on social media are actually known as bathing boxes. They were originally used in the Victorian era, when women would use them for privacy to change into chin-to-ankle bathing suits.

Penguins at Boulders Bay

Highlights: Seeing thousands of penguins waddling down a white sand beach or swimming amidst boulders

Penguins are adorable in any setting, but seeing them waddle around in their natural environment is a particular thrill for wildlife lovers.

About an hour's drive from Cape Town, Boulder's Bay in Simon's Town shelters a breeding colony of more than 2,000 endangered African Penguins. This beautiful wind-sheltered, white-sand beach belongs to the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area , and the park charges an entrance fee to access these shores. But it's worth it.

Visitors can enjoy close-up encounters with these charismatic creatures, all in a stunning setting with giant granite boulders, rock pools, calm bays, and blissfully uncrowded patches of gleaming sand. A short walk from here, Foxy Beach is also great for viewing the penguins with a walkway that leads past the prime sites. This is a fantastic family-friendly excursion for animal lovers and beach lovers alike.

Take a private tour of the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point from Cape Town to experience the fascinating wildlife of the Cape Peninsula. The tour gives visitors a choose-your-own-adventure option to either visit the penguins at Boulders Beach or explore the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve , home to hundreds of species of birds, as well as bucks, baboons, and Cape zebra.

Cape Point

Highlight: Driving to Cape Point via Chapman's Peak Drive, one of the world's most stunning stretches of pavement

About 60 kilometers from Cape Town, Cape Point lies within the southernmost tip of Table Mountains National Park and is part of the Cape Floral Region , a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the richest areas of flora in the world.

The scenic drive from Cape Town along the Cape Peninsula takes travelers past the surf breaks of Muizenberg , and the pretty seaside town of Kalk Bay , as well as the prime-penguin-viewing beaches at Simon's Town.

Wildlife is also diverse on this soaring seacliff. About 250 species of birds are found here as well as eland, Cape zebra, reptiles, and troops of brazen baboons. Visitors can enjoy the view from the Cape Point lighthouse by taking the Flying Dutchman funicular or hiking up the many stairs to the top. Other things to do include whale watching, shipwreck spotting from the beach, and nature walks.

For a twist on this eye-popping seaside scenery on the return trip, drive along the 114 bends of Chapman's Peak drive , and stop for a succulent seafood feast at Hout Bay or Noordhoek.

Cape Point is the most southwesterly tip of Africa, not to be confused with Cape Agulhas, about 150 kilometers away, which is the most southerly tip of the continent where the currents of the two oceans, the Indian and the Atlantic, meet.

Whale watching at Hermanus

Highlight: Seeing large numbers of southern right whales migrating through the waters off Hermanus

About 120 kilometers east of Cape Town, Hermanus is one of the world's whale-watching hotspots. From July through November, large numbers of southern right whales migrate through these waters, and visitors can even spot them from shore — especially during the prime months of September, October, and November.

On foot, the best places to visit to see these magnificent creatures are the 12-kilometer-long Cliff Path , the Old Harbour viewing terraces, and Sievers Point . Alternatively, sightseers can join a guided sea kayak trip, hop aboard one of the popular whale-watching cruises, or enjoy a scenic flight for a bird's eye view.

Hermanus celebrates these magnificent creatures with an annual whale festival in September, and the town is also popular for its beautiful beaches and many water sports, including fishing, swimming, and shark cage diving.

Llandudno Beach

Highlights : Less-crowded beach about 20 minutes' drive from downtown; a local favorite with great sunsets

Most tourists head to Camps Bay or Clifton Beaches when they visit Cape Town. But continue south of the city towards Hout Bay for about 20 kilometers to reach Llandudno Beach. This is the spot locals head to when they want to escape the crowds on summer days.

The ocean is definitely going to be cold here. The current comes up from Antarctica just like it does on Cape Town's beaches , but when it's really hot, the chilly water can feel refreshing. There can be good surfing here, as well as body boarding, but you might want to wear a wet suit to stay in long.

Pack a picnic, as there are no restaurants here. There are also no shops, so you'll want to bring everything you need for the day with you, including beach loungers and umbrellas if you want them. The beach is located down a narrow and winding road, and there is a small parking lot. Since the beach faces in a westerly direction, the sunsets are often stunning.

A Stellenbosch estate

Highlight : Strolling through the pretty university town with its elegant Cape Dutch architecture

About 53 kilometers east of Cape Town, Stellenbosch is one of South Africa's prettiest towns. Elegant Cape Dutch estates rise amid a patchwork of vine-cloaked fields and ancient oaks backed by mountains.

This lively university town resides in a picturesque valley, and its fertile soils nurture some of the country's best produce, which the town showcases at its acclaimed restaurants, atmospheric alfresco cafes, and popular markets.

To soak up some of the region's history, visit the Village Museum , a group of four restored houses and gardens dating from 1709 to 1850.

Rupert Museum spotlights works by South African artists, and the Botanic Garden at the University of Stellenbosch is a lovely spot to stroll and relax with an organic tea at the cafe. Outdoor adventures await in the beautiful Jonkershoek Nature Reserve where nature lovers can hike and bike on the wilderness trails.

North of Stellenbosch, Paarl also boasts beautiful scenery and a rich agricultural heritage, while the charming town of Franschhoek, about 35 minutes from Stellenbosch, is known as South Africa's culinary capital. Closer to Cape Town, the Constantia Valley is another hotspot for foodies.

Stellenbosch Map - Tourist Attractions

Highlights: A family-friendly beach with freshwater tidal pools and colorful beach huts

Located between the fishing village of Kalk Bay and the surfing town of Muizenberg, St. James Beach is about a 30-minute drive from Cape Town. Here, you'll find one of the most famous freshwater tidal pools around The Mother City.

It is a great spot for kids to splash around, as the tidal pool is protected from the open ocean and crashing waves by rock or concrete barriers (it's like a natural swimming pool). The pools fill with the tides.

St. James Beach is also very family-friendly, as the surf and sand here are sheltered from the wind by a cove — although, there is also decent surfing on the reef if you want to ride some waves. During summer, the beach can get very busy, especially on weekends, so head out early to take a dip with fewer people.

Also like at Muizenberg, St. James Beach is home to the colorful bathing huts that have become such a popular social media backdrop. After you are done playing in the sea, you can grab lunch or check out the shops in Kalk Bay, which is about a 15-minute walk or a quick drive away.

We recommend these convenient hotels in Cape Town with easy access to top attractions like Table Mountain and the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront:

  • South Beach Camps Bay Boutique Hotel is the top luxury boutique property in Camps Bay. Just across the street from the trendy beach and within walking distance of numerous restaurants, it has a minimalist modern ambience throughout and impeccable 5-star hotel service. The views are also awesome.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • Victorian-style Antrim Villa features Afro-Scandinavian accents, and has affordable rates and a saltwater pool; it's conveniently located in Green Point.
  • Centrally located Holiday Inn Express Cape Town City Centre is a modern high-rise with budget-friendly rates and a complimentary breakfast.

The best time to visit Cape Town is during December, January, and February. The summer months bring the warmest air and sea temperatures, and the city has a fun vibe during this time.

Thanks to a current that comes directly from Antarctica, the water off Cape Town's beaches remains frigid year-round, especially on its Atlantic coast side. The summer months are also the driest months, and you'll find days are often sunny with clear blue skies.

June and July are the coldest and rainiest months of the year. You still get lots of sunny days, but there is a chill in the air and some days can feel downright cold when the rain falls. If you aren't concerned about beach weather, however, you can score some great hotel deals visiting in the winter.

The swing season months of March, April, and May and August and September are also great times to explore Cape Town. Attractions are less crowded and the weather is usually decent.

Unwrapping Cape Town with you

There's something exciting going on in Cape Town every week. Be the first to know what's new with our newsletter:

They’re easy to pack, totally unique, and distinctly Cape Town

Cape Town is a creative and cultural melting pot that leaves such a strong imprint on your heart, you’ll want to share it with people back home. But how do you find perfect souvenirs? Unique, one-of-a-kind gifts that even locals are proud to own; easy-to-pack authentic “curios” made here, not in a factory somewhere far away; gifts that you, your kids, partner, parents, friends – or even your dog – will be excited to unwrap?

The Table Mountain Ring from Shimansky was just that kind of souvenir, and we’ve partnered with them to bring you the ultimate list of Cape Town’s most precious souvenirs, so you can take a piece of Cape Town with you when you go.

KEEP TABLE MOUNTAIN CLOSE AT HAND

Table Mountain’s flat top is an icon recognised the world over. Of course, the mountain won’t fit into your luggage, so Shimansky’s Table Mountain ring is the perfect memento of Cape Town. It’s available in a variety of styles: Silver, 14 carat yellow, white or rose gold, with or without diamonds. There's even a lifesize version of it at the V&A Waterfront .

RAISE A GLASS TO THE MOTHER CITY

Impress your wine-loving friends and family with a bottle of wine that tells a story. Jane Austen wrote about “its healing powers on a disappointed heart”. Charles Dickens tells of “the support embodied in a glass of Constantia and a home-made biscuit”. And it is rumoured that the deadly poison slipped to Napoleon during his exile in St Helena was in a glass of "Constantia wijn". We’re talking about the iconic Vin de Constance made by Klein Constantia: a smooth, natural sweet wine as old as the Cape Town wine route itself.

cape town tourism shop

Why we love it: The honey-coloured wine pairs beautifully with chocolate, fruit, and all things decadent. It also keeps for many years if stored correctly. Price: The current vintage (2015) is selling for R1095, the 2016 is yet to be released. Where to go: Klein Constantia itself. It is one of the 10 estates that makes up the Constantia Wine Route, so you can grab this keepsake while you’re wine-tasting.

TASTE THE CAPE TOWN SUMMER

Inverroche was started by Lorna Scott in her family home in Still Bay using fynbos, the magical plants that give the city’s craft gins a truly Capetonian complexity. She wanted to “tell a story that (she) could put in a bottle, that could sit on a shelf anywhere across the globe and would speak about not just the Cape but about us, as a species”, she told radio station Cape Talk. At Still Bay, the water runs through the limestone, nourishing the fynbos species that go into Inverroche’s three distinctive gins. The smooth, flavoursome gins can be enjoyed neat. As for Lorna’s perfect G&T? One part gin, three parts tonic, lots of ice, and never a slice of lemon – only zest.

cape town tourism shop

We can’t talk about fynbos without mentioning Cape Town’s most famous endemic herb: rooibos. It only grows wild in one place on earth: the hills just outside of Cape Town. Farmers have tried to grow the plant all over the globe but failed. Rooibos is as local as it gets, and - like you - it is resistant to leaving. You can, however, take home the organic tea bags made by BOS.

cape town tourism shop

Why we love them: Capetonians are so proud of their fynbos, with its fragrant herbs and bold flavours. The taste takes us back home every time, which is what the best souvenirs should do. Price: Inverroche is priced from R370-420, and BOS tea bags are R72. Where to go: BOS tea bags are easy to pick up at any good supermarket, so they’re an excellent last-minute buy. You can also find Inverroche in all good liquor stores, but it’s worth a short trip to Still Bay to take a tour of the distillery and even infuse your own gin.

GLOW UP, CAPE TOWN STYLE

When it comes to local skincare brands, Hey Gorgeous is a firm favourite. It makes an amazing gift, with its trendy, colourful branding. The Vitamin C Serum rebuilds collagen density, helps to reverse sun damage and increases elasticity - but when anyone asks why you’re glowing, just tell them it’s the Cape Town sea air.

cape town tourism shop

Why we love it:  Hey Gorgeous makes cruelty-free, eco-friendly, and proudly Capetonian products. They have product ranges for men too (because self-care is for everyone). Price:  R330. Where to go: The great thing about Hey Gorgeous' products is that you can get them online, so you can spend your time soaking up the Cape Town scenery without having to stress about your gift shopping.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE KIDS (AND FUR BABIES)

Peta Becker started Projekt to provide employment for women from her home community, Hout Bay. She works with 25 women to create quirky, whimsical designs, including the Gentle Monkey (a wonderful gift for kids) and her popular crocheted cacti. “These beautifully hand-made toys reflect what we think of as Cape Town values: sustainability, creativity and local talent,” says Peta.

Chommies’ story is like something straight out of a rom-com: at a farmer’s market in Cape Town, two dogs - Hiker and Ringo - met, and hit it off. Their humans, Nathalie Klijn and Zac Rusagara, also locked eyes, and today, the two are entwined both as romantic partners and the brains behind Chommies. Their leads and collars are totally unique and eye-catching. Who knows, they might even catch the eye of someone from your local farmer’s market?

cape town tourism shop

Why we love them: Both products are unlike anything you’ll find anywhere else. They’re hyper-local, hand-made, and downright adorable. Price: Chommies lead and collar set is R1,450; the Projekt Gentle Monkeys gor for R755. Where to go: Chommies’ full range can be purchased online. Projekt’s Gentle Monkeys are available exclusively from the Zeitz MOCAA gift shop, so you can check out the massive collection of art from Africa and its diaspora while you’re there.

BE COOL, HYDRATE

Carrol Boyes started her career as a teacher, back in the 80s. In 1989, at age 35, she quit her job to pursue her dream of becoming an artist and started making jewellery from clay and cuttlefish out of her Hout Bay home. Her first sales were made from a stall in Greenmarket Square. From there, she sky-rocketed to success: by 1992 she had two factories. Carrol died in 2019, and her legacy lives on in the beautiful “functional art” crafted under her name.

Carrol Boyes’ insulated water bottles are the coolest way to stay hydrated. The line-drawing-style designs are beautifully bold: everyone will ask you where you got the bottle, and you’ll have a chance to relive your Cape Town days every time.

cape town tourism shop

Why we love it: Everybody loves a souvenir you can actually use. These bottles are practical, beautiful, and tell a wonderful story. Price: R445. Where to go: There are Carrol Boyes stores in most Cape Town malls, including the V&A Waterfront. They also ship globally.

STAY FREE AND KEEP MOVING

Roal and Léan Boezaart grew up in a house of four boys, and their parents often had their hands full. “To maintain some form of order,” the brothers explain on their website, “our dad introduced a house rule called ‘Freedom of Movement’.” It meant that if the boys worked hard and were disciplined they’d be rewarded with the freedom to do what they liked. In 2013, having qualified as a civil engineer and a chartered accountant respectively, the brothers threw caution to the wind and launched a lifestyle brand out of a small room at Stellenbosch University. They named it Freedom of Movement. Their leather products are as robust and practical as they are beautiful, and we’re in love with their modern, trendy leather backpacks.

cape town tourism shop

Why we love it: South African leather is known world-wide for its amazing quality, and these bags tell a great story about adventure and family. They exemplify Cape Town’s fierce creative spirit - and, of course, they’re trendy enough for the hippest peeps in town. Price: R2,995. Where to go: 190 Bree Street, the city’s trendiest strip, lined with restaurants and boutique shops.

CELEBRATE CAPE TOWN’S COFFEE CULTURE

When you think of coffee culture in the city, you think of Mischu: It’s won awards for Best Coffee in Cape Town three years in a row.  Take a piece of Cape Town home with you when you buy a bag of Mischu’s Isabella blend (our iconic Table Mountain makes an appearance),  an easy-drinking everyday coffee, with notes of dark chocolate and hazelnut. Plus, it has a special backstory,  told by founder Mikhael “Mischu” Bou Rjeily .

Why we love them:  Mischu is known for helping out small businesses on their coffee journey by providing training and advice (they’ve trained over 4 000 baristas!) Where to go:  Mischu is located at 85 Regent Road, one of the most bustling roads in Sea Point (opposite the Spar) Price:  Varies

by Sabine | Sep 27, 2017 | South Africa , Travel Tips | 6 comments

Souvenirs are a nice reminder of a holiday or time spent in a certain destination. They bring back beautiful memories from the country you have travelled to every time you look at or use them. Buying souvenirs does not only have to be as a reminder for oneself, but also as a gift to friends and family. South Africa is a great place to buy curios and local art. When visiting the country you will notice that there are so many best things to buy in South Africa and any visitor will be spoilt for choice. With lots of craft markets, local art shops and souvenir stalls, Cape Town is an outstanding place to buy South African souvenirs.

Since Cape Town is often visited at the end of a trip through South Africa, it makes a great place to buy South African souvenirs without having to carry them in your luggage during your trip. If you don’t have space anymore in your luggage, it is possible to buy certain South African souvenirs online. Keep reading and find out per items if it is available online or not. Read also about all the things to do in Cape Town for free to have more budget left for buying souvenirs.

I love souvenir shopping in every country I travel in. And I especially like to buy traditional South African gifts. The items are so nice, colourful and mostly handmade. I collected so many beautiful items over the years that every time I go shopping in Cape Town I have to restrain myself from buying more. All in all, when visiting South Africa, souvenir shopping should definitely be on your to do list. Still wondering what to buy in Cape Town?

Rooibos Tea is an exclusive South African product

Thanks to its amazing health benefits , Rooibos tea is gaining popularity worldwide. This fragrant caffeine free tea comes from a shrub-like bush which only grows in the Cederberg area on the West Coast of South Africa, just north of Cape Town, making it ‘truly South African’ and a great souvenir from South Africa. It’s a very popular drink in South Africa. Rooibos tea of various brands can be found in most supermarkets. For nice gift wrapping, flavoured Rooibos tea or loose Rooibos tea, you can visit specialty tea or souvenir shops in town. Rooibos tea is a nice souvenir to buy in Cape Town, especially when you want something small and light to carry back home in your luggage.

Tip : The best way to prepare Rooibos tea is to cook the tea for about 15 minutes and add sugar and/or milk to taste

Buy Rooibos Tea online

You can also buy Rooibos Tea online if you run out of your South African stock or if you did not have the change to find some while shopping in South Africa

Biltong is a cured and dried meat flavoured with various spices, originating from South Africa. Biltong used to be made for meat preservation purposes by the early ‘Voortrekkers’, but is now a very popular snack in South Africa. Traditionally, biltong is made from beef but also comes in most variations of game meat; like kudu, springbok, ostrich and even shark. It can be bought in supermarkets, butcheries and specialised biltong shops. Varieties of biltong include droewors (dried sausage) and chilli bites, which are small spicy sticks of meat. Biltong is great as ‘padkos’, which in South Africa means ‘snacks for the road’, or literally translated: ‘road food’ (but not road kill) It can also be had as an appetiser before a South African braai or barbeque . which is when you will have the real meat.

Tip: Keep in mind that you cannot fly to every country with meat products in your luggage but you may be able to buy it online in your destination / home country.

Amarula Cream

Amarula is a cream liqueur made in South Africa with the delicious Marula fruit as its main ingredient. The Marula fruit is distilled to a spirit base and aged in French oak for two years. The Marula fruit that grows on the Marula tree attracts many animals, especially the African elephant who love to eat this fruit. Therefore, the Marula tree is also called ‘The Elephants tree’.

Amarula liqueur, which has a delicious sweet and exotic creamy flavour is best drank ‘on the rocks’ or added to your coffee or dessert. The liquor is produced in South Africa, but around 70% of the production is exported to at least 100 countries worldwide, making it one of the most famous products of South Africa. It is highly probable you can find Amarula in your home country, but buying this product locally always adds to the charm of a gift from South Africa.

Amarula Cream liqueur can be bought in any bottle store in Cape Town as well as in the airport if you want to get a bottle or two before flying out.

South African wines

South Africa is famous for its wines and wine producing regions. When visiting Cape Town, a visit to a wine farm should be high on your to do list. The region around Cape Town has so many great wine areas with multiple great wine farms; like Stellenbosch, Constantia and Franschoek. South Africa even has its own signature variety of red wine grape, which is the Pinotage. Did you know that the scenic  Route 62 , which meanders from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, is the longest wine route in the world?

Bringing home a bottle or crate of South African wines is a marvellous souvenir to remember the beautifully located vineyards, the delicious food and the amazing landscapes. Either pack a bottle in your luggage, or have it sent to your home address through the wine farm. A lot of wineries now also export wines all over the world. So you can go wine tasting in the various wine farms and you might be able to find your favourite South African wine on the shelf in your home country.

Decorated ostrich eggs and other ostrich products

Another typical South African souvenir that you can find in many gift shops in Cape Town (making it one of the best things to buy in Cape Town) are beautifully decorative ostrich eggs. Ostriches are indigenous to South Africa and being a large supplier of ostrich products worldwide, it plays an important role in the South Africa economy. Oudtshoorn is the Ostrich capital of South Africa and is great for a visit to learn more about the worlds largest, flightless birds.

The souvenir eggs of an ostrich are really large and empty, either plain, carved, painted and are great for interior or exterior decoration. Ostrich eggs can even be used as a light holder. Ostrich leather is used to make wallets and handbags and is easy recognisable by the ‘bumps’ on the leather. Another great and useful ostrich product are the feathers. They make great dusters, are very durable and can pick up the dust much better than any other type of duster. I use one and I can recommend it.

Buy Ostrich Eggs online

Ostrich eggs can be bulky in your luggage when flying back home. If you really would like to buy one or a few and have no space anymore (I know, too many nice gifts to buy in South Africa) you can purchase decorative ostrich eggs online.

Carved wooden items

Wood carvings are very popular amongst tourists. They fit in most interiors and come in dozens of shapes and are a beautiful reminder of your stay in Cape Town and South Africa.  From African masks, decorated bowls, to animal figures, and spoons, it will be easy to find something that you will like. I love to browse the various market stalls for some beautiful hand painted items, even though I have a whole collection already.

Tip: Keep in mind though, that along with biltong, wooden souvenirs cannot be brought into every country.

Wire and bead art

A beautiful and authentic souvenir to take home from Cape Town is some wire and bead art. Beads play an important role in local African tradition.

Local talented artists make the most beautiful items out of wire and decorate them with colourful beads. This art comes in various shapes and sizes. From keyrings, to animal figures, to toycars, it’s really worthwile to support the local artists as well as to get something nice and unique from your trip. Look for the stalls where you can see the artist working on his wire art, which is as local as you can get.

Diamonds and Tanzanite gemstones

Diamonds were discovered in South Africa in 1867. It is currently still one of the top producing countries in the world. Thanks to the favourable exchange rate, many visitors want to buy diamonds or jewellery in Cape Town. There are plenty of high end jewellery shops in the city selling diamonds. Should you still wonder what to bring back from South Africa? For many, diamonds and Tanzanite are the ultimate souvenir to take home from Cape Town.

Tanzanite is a beautiful blue violet gemstone originally mined in the area of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Tanzanite is only found in a small region in Tanzania making it one of the worlds rarest gemstones. It is currently a highly sought after souvenir for many tourists visiting Cape Town. The interesting exchange rate makes tanzanite an interesting buy for tourists. Many jewellery shops in and around Cape Town will have Tanzanite pieces for sale.

Tanzanite is one of the top 5 selling gem stones in South Africa.

Where to buy souvenirs in Cape Town

Cape Town has plenty of places where local authentic, and best souvenirs from South Africa can be purchased. From souvenir stalls on the road, to art and craft shops, to specialty shops and large shopping malls, you can find it all and in abundance in Cape Town.

To list all the available places in Cape Town would be a few more separate posts, so I will list just a few places in town with lots of possibilities to find a beautiful South African souvenir.

Greenmarket Square: Located in the middle of the city centre, and surrounded by hip coffee shops and restaurants, street vendors build up market stalls to showcase their best souvenirs every day in Greenmarket square .

V&A Waterfront:  The most popular tourist area with lots of shops selling a wide range of South African products as well as high end jewellery shops for diamonds and other gemstones. The Waterfront provides some of the best shopping in Cape Town.

Watershed: A new addition to the V&A Waterfront offering various arts and crafts, right next to the aquarium.

Company’s Gardens: Various street vendors set up their stalls in the Company’s Gardens to sell locally made crafts, also located in the city centre not far from Greenmarket Square.

Weekly markets: Cape Town is famous for its various indoor and outdoor markets where local crafts can be bought.

Finding the right souvenir can be a bit overwhelming. We hope this guide has given you some ideas about what to buy in South Africa and to bring home some beautiful Cape Town souvenirs. And should you not have had time to go shopping, you can always find South African souvenirs online as mentioned above.

What is your most memorable souvenir you have brought back from your travels?

I would check out the shop “Out of Africa” in the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town (you can also find this shop in the airport). They might have teaspoons with Cape Town written on it.

Hi – I would really like to know where I can buy souvenir wall mountable plates

We’re not entirely sure. The best suggestion we have is to maybe try the markets and shops mentioned in this post.

Am looking for name of shop that decorates all its items with used tea bags.

They are called “Original T-Bag Designs”. They have a shop at Unit 12A, Watershed, V&A Waterfront. Their main store and workshop is at Klein Kronendal, 144 Main Road, Hout Bay.

While in Cape Town you’ll find a higher concentration of quality beaded animals, the prices are higher. The best artisans are attracted to Cape Town because of the many tourists and this concentration of tourists enables the artisans to sell at a higher price. If you’re looking for high detailed/quality pieces and prepared to pay the price, then Cape Town is your best bet. However, artisans can be found at fairs and street corners all over making and hawking their wares for significantly less. African beaded animals are not only available in South Africa. There’s a number of online sellers offering a wide selection from key chains to the highest end pieces. Quality and prices vary and some ship from Africa, some from the USA, etc. In fact, some higher end pieces are available online for less than in Cape Town! Make sure to purchase African made beaded animals. This is an original African art form and unfortunately has been copied in China and elsewhere, taking away much needed income from the struggling African artisans. Check out www. beadedanimals. net for authentic fair trade African beaded animals, beaded key chains and more.

Cape Town, Surrounds Buffeted by Torrential Rain, High Winds

  • Fires, high winds, flooding cause infrastructure damage
  • Assessments still going on as another day of rain looms

Cape Town, South Africa’s tourism hub, and the surrounding Western Cape province have been battered by torrential rains, howling winds and bush fires that caused extensive damage to buildings, roads and other infrastructure.

Schools were closed in three municipalities to limit traffic on the roads, with storms that began Sunday expected to persist into Monday night, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said.

Docking of two royal cruise ships in Cape Town solidifies ongoing tourism revenue boost for province

For the first time, two royal cruise ships - the queen victoria and the queen mary 2 - have docked in the cape town harbour..

  • Western Cape

CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape MEC for Finance and Economic Opportunities Mireille Winger says tourism has the potential to continue generating significant revenue for the province.

She was speaking at the Cape Town cruise terminal on Friday.

For the first time, two royal cruise ships - the Queen Victoria and the Queen Mary 2 - have docked in the harbour.

Trade and investment promotion agency Wesgro predicts that during this cruise season alone, around 3,000 jobs have been created.

Wenger says over 90,000 passengers in 2023/24 cruise season are expected this year.

During the 2022/23 season, R1.2 billion in revenue was generated, an encouraging indicator for the current cruise season.

"It’s very exciting to be able to welcome both the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Victoria cruise ships at the same time, for the first time to the Cape Town cruise terminal.

"This exciting occasion shows that tourism and cruise tourism is on the up in the Western Cape. This is great news because more tourists, mean more jobs in our province."

Wenger attributed the success of this flourishing area of tourism in the province to its partnership with the private sector.

A Cruise Lines International Association report found that 63% of cruise passengers were likely to revisit destinations encountered through cruise tourism, and with 70 and 65 confirmed ship visits for the 2022/23 and 2023/24 cruise seasons respectively, the sector continues to boost the province's tourism revenue.
