April in the Caribbean: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

caribbean cruise april weather

TripSavvy /  Derek Abella

The coldest months of winter are without a doubt the high season in the Caribbean, as people flock to the unceasing warmth of the islands in order to escape the frigid cold blanketing most parts of the world. That also makes winter the most expensive time to visit the Caribbean, so if you can withstand a few months of winter, you can save a lot of money by waiting until April to plan your trip. As spring weather is finally starting to appear in your hometown, the Caribbean is just as warm and beautiful as it is all year long.

Not only do you miss out on the high season by visiting in April, but it's also just before hurricane season begins in the Caribbean , so you can prepare for your trip and enjoy island life without worrying about the possibility of an impending storm.

Caribbean Weather in April

Throughout this tropical region, April temperatures in the Caribbean vary from daytime highs above 80 degrees F to evening lows down to 70 degrees F. There's some variation depending on the island that you visit, with the coolest temperatures usually found in the Bahamas , but overall it's comfortably hot across the entire region.

No matter which island or country you visit, this is considered the dry season in the Caribbean and rain is at a minimum, a very promising forecast for travelers hoping for sunny skies. Puerto Rico is among the wettest Caribbean locals in April, receiving almost five inches of rain, whereas Bonaire and Aruba are two of the driest, getting just half an inch of precipitation. Ocean temperatures are quite warm during April, too, making it the perfect time for a swim.

Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30, so it's unlikely that your trip in April will be affected by inclement weather. Hurricanes are unpredictable though, and peak season can vary according to geography. The season is typically busiest between mid-August and mid-September.

What to Pack

When packing for your Caribbean trip , you will want to bring a bathing suit, of course, as well as loose-fitting cotton or linen layers to keep you cool during the day. Flip-flops are also a must and, in case you want to do adventure activities, you will need sneakers, socks, and athletic clothing. Above all, do not forget to bring plenty of sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, as these items are marked up significantly in hotels and local shops.

For more casual evenings, pack a light sweater and long pants or a comfortable maxi dress. You will also want dressier clothes if you plan on visiting a nice restaurant or exploring the nightlife, as many have dress codes. For nights you plan on going out, you will need more formal footwear such as nice, heeled sandals or pumps for ladies, and closed-toe dress shoes for men.

April Events in the Caribbean

Though any month you choose will feel like a celebration in the Caribbean, in April you will typically find Easter celebrations in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, boat races (regattas) in St. Barth and the British Virgin Islands,   gastronomical events, and much more.

  • A Taste of St. Croix : The U.S. Virgin Islands celebrates its unique and diverse cuisine at this one-day fundraiser event that draws some of the island's best chefs.
  • The Tobago Jazz Experience : This music festival attracts some top international acts to the typically sleepy island of Tobago (next to the much more lively island of Trinidad). Past headliners include Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, and others.
  • Oistins Festival : Barbados holds this annual celebration during Easter Weekend. The street fair includes cuisine such as fish cakes, fried fish, and head cheese.
  • Saborea : This long-running food festival is held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Diners can try local specialties such as mofongo along with all kinds of international dishes at this event which is meant to show off Puerto Rico's place as a gastronomical destination. (Saborea in 2021 has been postponed to a later date.)
  • Regattas : Boat racers and yacht lovers can find regattas happening around the Caribbean throughout the entire year, but two of the most exciting sailing events happen in April. Les Voiles de Saint Barth is the first one which is followed by Antigua Sailing Week . (Both the St. Barth and the Antigua regattas are canceled in 2021.)
  • St. Barth Film Festival : Celebrities flock to St. Barth at the end of April for the five-day celebration of Caribbean cinema. Imagine the glamour of festivals in Venice or Cannes but with the tropical backdrop of St. Barth and it's easy to see the appeal of this annual film festival. (The Film Festival in 2021 has been postponed to a later date.)

April Travel Tips

  • If you can wait until the end of April, known as the "shoulder season," you should. You’ll not only save money this time of year, but you will avoid the loud and sometimes raucous  Spring Break crowds, especially in popular destinations like the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas.
  • If you are visiting early in the month, you can expect islands to be a little crowded at popular destinations, but there will be far fewer crowds than in the busiest months of December, January, February, and March.
  • If you want to see several Caribbean destinations at once, consider a cruise . The weather is best through April and the late peak season means that prices will be lower than your typical winter cruise.

Caribbean

When you think about cruising to the Caribbean, the first thing that probably comes to mind is warm, tropical climate. Indeed, the Caribbean is an ideal cruise destination for those seeking refuge from the cold, as it maintains consistently hot temperatures year-round.

If you’re planning a cruise to the Caribbean, expect temperatures of around 80°F (27°C), with daytime highs of up to 90°F (32°C). The climate also tends to be quite humid, particularly during the wet season.

January is the coolest month in the Caribbean, a time when the region experiences a mild and more temperate climate. Destinations like Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos, The Bahamas, and Roatán are known for a subtle drop in temperature, offering a refreshing change from their typically warmer weather.

Seasons in the Caribbean: Dry Season and Wet Season

The Caribbean experiences two distinct seasons: the dry season, which lasts from December to May, and the wet season, lasting from June to November. The wet season is also known as the hurricane season. During the dry season, the weather is more stable and sunny, making it an ideal time for tourism. On the other hand, the wet season brings more rainfall and higher humidity, along with the increased chance of tropical storms and hurricanes.

When is the Hurricane Season in the Caribbean?

The peak of the hurricane season in the Caribbean lasts from August to mid-October. If you’re seeking a safe and enjoyable Caribbean cruise during this period, consider the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao), as they typically remain dry and are rarely affected by hurricanes.

Caribbean Weather in January

There’s no better way to start the New Year than a cruise to the Caribbean!

In January, the Caribbean experiences temperatures ranging from 80°F to 85°F (27°C to 29°C). You’ll find the southern Caribbean is generally warmer than other areas. Meanwhile, the eastern Caribbean enjoys slightly cooler temperatures, often in the high 70s.

Rainfall is rare in January, and when it does occur, it is likely to clear up fast. January is the coldest month in North America and Europe, so you can expect a lot of tourists to come at this time.

Caribbean Weather in February

In February, the Caribbean enjoys warm, sunny weather similar to January. Temperatures reach 86°F (30°C) in southern islands like Aruba, and around 78°F (25°C) in northern islands like Cuba and The Bahamas.

February is also a popular month to book a romantic couples’ cruise, thanks to Valentine’s Day, which falls on February 14th.

Oranjestad Aruba (1)

Caribbean Weather in March

March sees a lot of activity in the Caribbean, largely due to the consistently warm and dry weather. This attracts masses of spring breakers and snowbirds to the Caribbean to escape the cold.

In March, you can expect mostly dry weather. The only exception is Bermuda, which experiences an average of 4.3 inches of rain during this month.

In the northern parts of the Caribbean, temperatures start to rise, while the southern islands experience blistering heat. Average daytime temperatures hover around 84°F (29°C) during March.

Caribbean Weather in April

In April, it’s really hot across the Caribbean. The temperature usually goes up to about 85°F (29°C). Trinidad claims the title of the hottest location, with an average high of 91°F (33°C), whereas the Bahamas offers a cooler climate with an average high of 82°F (27°C).

Puerto Rico’s wet season begins in April, with the island averaging almost five inches of rain during April.

April is the perfect month for swimming and water activities in the Caribbean, where the average ocean temperature reaches a warm 27°C (80°F).

San Juan Puerto Rico

Caribbean Weather in May

In May, the Caribbean’s shoulder season begins, making it the perfect time for those seeking an affordable escape from the cold. As May progresses, humidity levels rise, and temperatures typically reach the mid to upper 80s.

The Caribbean’s dry season comes to a close in May. Although you may encounter occasional rainfall during this month, it typically clears up quickly.

Temperatures in the northern Caribbean continue to rise in May, with the Bahamas reaching an average high of 85°F (30°C).

Caribbean Weather in June

June is the first month of the wet season in the Caribbean, yet the chance of showers remains low across most islands. Expect an average of 6.1 inches of rainfall this month, with rain occurring on about 13 days.

The hurricane season in the Caribbean officially begins in June. Although don’t let this scare you from cruising, as the chance of experiencing a hurricane this month is still low. Don’t forget that June is still part of the shoulder period, so expect great deals on resorts and cruises.

In June, the climate remains quite humid, with temperatures ranging between 77°F and 88°F (25°C to 31°C). Additionally, you’ll find that temperatures in the northern Caribbean start to resemble those in the south.

Nassau Bahamas

Caribbean Weather in July

July brings increased rainfall, averaging around 6 inches and typically having 14 rainy days. Trinidad, known as one of the rainiest islands in the Caribbean, receives an average of 7.6 inches of rain with approximately 21 rainy days in July.

July is still within the hurricane season, but it’s a month before the season’s peak. A good vacation option during this time is the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao), which are less prone to hurricanes and storms.

Weather during July ranges from the mid 80s to low 90s. July is the perfect month for snorkeling as the ocean remains pleasantly warm, with an average temperature of 83°F (28°C).

Caribbean Weather in August

If you’re traveling to the Caribbean in August, expect warm and humid weather, typically in the high 80s to low 90s. In Cozumel , the average high is around 91°F (33°C), while places like St. Lucia and Barbados are a bit cooler, averaging highs of 87°F (30°C).

August is a rainy month in certain Caribbean areas. St. Lucia, for example, experiences 21 rainy days with an average of 6.2 inches of rain. In contrast, Aruba and Curacao are much drier, with each averaging less than 2 inches of rain per month.

Be aware that August marks the start of the peak hurricane season. To minimize the chance of encountering bad weather, consider traveling to the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao).

St. Lucia

Caribbean Weather in September

September kicks off the school year and the peak hurricane season, so expect small crowds. The weather generally sees temperatures soaring to the high 80s.

September is the month with the highest rainfall, with some areas getting over 13 inches of rain. The Cayman Islands and St. Lucia are among the rainiest locations, each experiencing 20 days of downpour.

While September might not sound like the ideal month for traveling, you can still visit the Caribbean if you choose the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao). These islands enjoy dry conditions and a lower risk of hurricanes, making them a popular destination in September.

Caribbean Weather in October

With October’s arrival, the peak hurricane season comes to an end. The early part of the month presents the greatest hurricane risk. However, encountering a storm is more probable than facing a hurricane during this month.

Rainfall in October is generally less frequent compared to September. The ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao) continue to offer dry conditions, making them perfect travel destinations.

The weather in the Caribbean is still warm during October, reaching average highs in the mid to upper 80s.

Caribbean Weather in November

In November, the likelihood of hurricanes is quite low, with the official end of the hurricane season on November 30. While there’s still a notable chance of rainfall, it’s lower compared to September and October.

The weather stays pleasantly warm, with average temperatures hovering between the 70s and 80s throughout the month.

For a November getaway, consider Curaçao and Jamaica, both of which typically receive less than 4 inches of rain, making them ideal destinations.

Willemstad Curacao

Caribbean Weather in December

As December brings colder temperatures to the northern hemisphere, expect plenty of people escaping to the Caribbean to avoid the cold. Expect high prices at the end of the month as Christmas draws near. Temperatures during December reach average highs in the mid 80s, though it can reach the low 70s during night.

The risk of rain is relatively low at this time of the year, though you might experience the occasional shower. Additionally, December also marks the first month outside of the hurricane season.

Final Words

The Caribbean is the perfect retreat from the harsh winter cold. If you’re considering a cruise to the Caribbean, the best time to go is during the dry season, which lasts from December to May. Keep in mind that this period is also the peak season, potentially resulting in higher costs. For those on a tighter budget, consider cruising between May and July, which falls within the shoulder season.

The ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao) stand out as excellent spots to cruise to during the hurricane season, thanks to their dry climate and low hurricane risk. When it comes to the rest of the Caribbean, it’s best to avoid visiting during the peak hurricane season unless you are prepared for itinerary changes and frequent downpours.

The best time to cruise to the Caribbean

Melinda Crow

When is the best time to cruise to the Caribbean? The easy answer is whenever it suits you. There's never a bad time to cruise to this giant blue fishbowl with a bazillion beaches to explore. That's because Caribbean is warm and mostly sunny year-round. You can find hundreds of cruise options every single month.

That's not to say that every season is the same. If I had to pick based on weather, cost and crowds, I'd vote winter as the best time to cruise the Caribbean.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If I were to narrow it down even further, I'd say the best time to cruise to the Caribbean is early December. It's a fun way to create a break between Thanksgiving and the December holidays. Picture yourself shopping for unique gifts after your snorkel excursion or before your spa appointment instead of slogging through slushy mall parking lots with the tip of your nose threatening to freeze, and I think you'll agree.

Here's how the entire year stacks up so you can identify the best time for your travel party to cruise the Caribbean .

caribbean cruise april weather

Winter: Moderate fares and quiet crowds (except during the holidays)

Let's start with my favorite time to cruise the Caribbean: winter (December/January/February). The temperatures throughout the region are a couple of degrees cooler than the rest of the year, and the average UV index dips down to 5 or 6 (moderate to high exposure). Rain typically comes in the form of passing afternoon showers, not tropical storms.

Except for the weeks that include holidays , ships aren't likely to be at capacity or filled with screaming children. Fares in winter are a bit below the yearly average (excluding the holiday weeks, which are often the highest of the year). Plus, there are deals available that bring prices down even lower. Look particularly at last-minute options and those first two weeks in December.

Ships that sail seasonally in Alaska and Europe often call the waters of the Caribbean home for a few months in winter. That adds up to more choices during this time of year.

If there are cruise lines or specific ships you would like to try, winter in the Caribbean is an ideal time to test them out — especially luxury and premium lines that often feature lower prices on Caribbean sailings than on their cruises elsewhere in the world. If you prefer childless cruising during the holidays, you can choose an adults-only cruise line like Viking.

The weather at home can be unpredictable in the winter, possibly affecting your departure travel plans and preventing you from reaching your Caribbean cruise. Plus, winter storms in the U.S. can increase wave action in the Atlantic and in the Gulf of Mexico. The farther north your departure port, the more likely you are to experience a rough ride until your ship sails south into calmer water.

While most of the season offers moderate fares, if your cruise dates are limited to holiday breaks, be prepared for prices close to double what you'd pay during the few weeks before that. Book holiday sailings well in advance to find lower fares.

Spring: Near-perfect weather with spring break crowds

If you don't mind spring break crowds, spring is a wonderful time to cruise. The weather in the Caribbean in March, April and May is idyllic, and the seas are likely to be calm. Plus, escaping the last of winter's wrath at home can be just what the doctor ordered to save your sanity.

Prices during the first week of March aren't too high before they edge up throughout the rest of the month. Deals are also possible in early May. If your aim is to cruise with your own children while they are on break, there are plenty of ships with age-appropriate facilities. You'll have options like splash zones for the little ones, monster slides for the adventurers and kids clubs for all ages. Don't forget indoor activities such as laser tag and ice skating.

Related: Caribbean cruise packing list: What to pack for a tropical sailing

The spring break rowdies start in March and often continue well into April. Soon after, in mid-May, the graduation parties begin. If your goal is to avoid crowds of kids and partiers, skip the cheapest and shortest cruises, as well as cruise ships with water parks and thrill rides.

Be aware that spring break is high season for travel disruptions caused by peak demand. Airlines may overbook. I was once bumped from a flight home after a spring cruise when a high school Spanish club from Wisconsin needed the seats to travel home together as a group. I was compensated and flew out the next day, but what if I had been bumped on my cruise embarkation day? If you plan a springtime Caribbean cruise, have a backup plan, including travel insurance, in case your travel itinerary gets rearranged at the last minute.

Summer: Fewer storms, many families and prices that may beat land-based trips

caribbean cruise april weather

Summer cruising in the Caribbean is ideal for lovers of sun, sea and sand looking for a fun escape with their kids or grandchildren while school is out. June, July and August temperatures average near 90 degrees throughout the region. While there's a possibility of tropical storms or hurricanes, the Atlantic hurricane season doesn't peak until late August through October.

These are the months when you rarely need to worry about weather shutting down onboard water attractions or causing cancellations of your in-port fun. Summer months are also perfect for multi-generational cruising, as they are often the only months when everyone's schedules align. And when you have a group to manage, you need as many activities as possible to keep everyone entertained. Summer cruises in the Caribbean make that easy with plenty of options, both on board and in port.

Cruise fares are higher overall in summer than in the other three seasons. Ships sail at or near capacity. Even the ports themselves will likely be crowded. Shops and attractions will overflow with passengers from other ships and land-based vacationers.

You'll also need to plan for mosquitos in port and for serious sun protection. Most of the Caribbean averages a UV index of 7 (considered a high risk) during the summer months, holding at a high or extremely high level for long stretches of the day.

Related: Eastern Caribbean vs. Western Caribbean cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

Despite high fares, summer cruise pricing and crowd levels stack up favorably against most land-based vacations. Once you factor in the included meals, entertainment and activities on a cruise, then consider traffic congestion, long lines and skyrocketing hotel costs associated with other vacation options like theme parks and even popular national parks, a summer Caribbean cruise with the family can seem downright affordable and less anxiety-filled.

Fall: Low prices, low occupancy, risky weather

Fall, especially September and early October, is not a bad time to cruise to the Caribbean – unless you are a worrier or someone who can't go with the flow when travel plans go awry. That's because the autumn months are the peak season for hurricanes and tropical storms. When it isn't stormy, it might still be a bit warm and sticky for some early in the season. Temperatures remain near the 90-degree range well into October.

The weather isn't all bad in the fall and Caribbean cruises prices are low during these months. I've been on lovely cruises in the Caribbean in September and October with calm seas and uncrowded, quiet ships, all at a fraction of the price of cruises just a handful of weeks earlier in the year. If saving money and avoiding the spring and summer crowds is your aim, and you are the kind of cruiser who will sing in a rowboat in the rain if it gets you away from home, then fall is perfect for you.

Related: The 9 best fall cruise itineraries

Weather happens -- and in the Caribbean, it happens a lot in September and October. Even if a hurricane doesn't cause you grief, rain might. A few years ago, I cruised the Western Caribbean near the end of October and it poured the whole time. I had no idea it could rain that hard in Cozumel, a desert island. And Grand Cayman? That's where I learned the meaning of the word "torrential." Even with all that rain, it wasn't a bad cruise. The rain didn't interfere with my scuba diving plans.

November feels like a bonus cruise month. The temperatures have dropped a few degrees from summer's heat and the chance of storms has mostly passed. Extra ships begin arriving for their winter season and prices remain low for most of the month. Back home, everyone else is busy buying turkeys and cranberries and catering to the in-laws. You, however, could be lounging on deck sipping a frozen tropical concoction while waiting for your samba class to start.

Bottom line

Now we're back where we started – with you booking a Caribbean cruise that works for you and your travel group. Each season has something to offer someone, which is what makes this whole year-round Caribbean cruise thing work. If we all thought early December was truly the best time to cruise to the Caribbean, it would cease to be so.

Caribbean Weather by Month

The Caribbean is a tropical paradise with idyllic conditions year-round. However, some people like it on the breezy side, while others prefer it toasty. Learn all about Caribbean weather by month to time your Caribbean cruise just right.

Caribbean Seasons

Many places in the world have four seasons, but the Caribbean has two: a dry season (typically December-May) and a wet season (usually June-November). The dry season has the most pleasant weather with warm, sunny days and blue skies. Rain is more frequent in the wet season, but the temperatures are higher.

Wet season and dry season are both  good times to cruise the Caribbean . The worst time for a Caribbean cruise weather-wise is August to September, as it is peak hurricane season.

Caribbean Weather in January

When it’s teeth-chattering cold in many places, the Caribbean beckons with temps in the low to mid 80s. January is the driest month in the Caribbean. The occasional downpour still may surprise you, so add a raincoat to your  Caribbean packing list .

Caribbean weather varies. If you like swimming and snorkeling in warm waters, consider a  Southern Caribbean cruise  to Aruba, one of the Caribbean’s hottest islands. If you prefer daytime temps in the breezy high 70s, an Eastern Caribbean cruise might be a better option.

When the sun goes down, it cools considerably. Pack sweaters or light jackets for stargazing on deck or  watching poolside movies  on board.

Couple standing on a white-sand beach in the Caribbean.

Caribbean Weather in February

With long stretches of sunshine, temperatures in the low to mid 80s, and only the occasional brief shower, it’s no surprise February is one of the busiest months for tourism across the Caribbean. For the warmest temperatures, opt for Southern Caribbean cruises—the closer you are to the equator, the better.

February is the perfect time to book a romantic couples’ cruise and celebrate Valentine’s Day in tropical paradise.

Caribbean Weather in March

March is peak season for travel to the Caribbean, thanks to consistently warm, dry weather—and masses of spring breakers and snowbirds flocking to the islands to escape the cold. Expect temperatures in the low to mid 80s and little rainfall.

If you’re set on traveling to the Caribbean in March, be sure to book your flights, cruise, and activities well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Caribbean Weather in April

April is warmer but rainier. Most destinations enjoy temperatures in the mid to upper 80s. Swimming is comfortable throughout the Caribbean. Dip into crystalline waters—snorkel the kaleidoscopic reefs around  Grand Turk  or ride horses into the surf on  Half Moon Cay .

The end of April is known as “shoulder season”, which is the travel period between peak season and off-season in the Caribbean. This often means you can enjoy fewer crowds and lower prices than peak season, and better weather than off-season.

Caribbean Weather in May

In May, rainfall is slightly heavier and humidity levels start to increase, with temperatures in the mid to upper 80s. However, you can still expect plenty of clear skies and pleasant days.

The beaches and roads tend to be quieter in May, making it a great time to book a variety of shore excursions .

Caribbean Weather in June

June kicks off the wet season in most Caribbean areas, but the weather is still balmy, and the risk of showers is low. Temperatures in June are in the mid 80s and into the 90s with high humidity.

Beat the heat and rain at one of many museums. Duck into the Hemingway House in Key West to see where Ernest Hemingway once lived and wrote.

Caribbean Weather in July

During July, temperatures reach the high 80s and low 90s, and there is more rainfall. Humidity is high. Although July is part of hurricane season, it’s not at its peak. If you’re willing to chance a few tropical storms, now is a great time to avoid crowds.

Port of Bonaire in Kralendijk, Caribbean Netherlands

Caribbean Weather in August

Temperatures continue to soar in the high 80s and low 90s, with high humidity. Hurricane season also starts heating up this month. If you’re planning a trip to the Caribbean in August, you may want to stick to the ABC islands ( Aruba , Bonaire , and Curacao ), which typically see fewer storms and are considered low-risk options to visit during hurricane season.

Caribbean Weather in September

September is one of the quietest months, as it’s peak hurricane season. Temperatures typically hit the high 80s, with summer humidity still lingering. Rainfall is also high, so packing rain gear is a must. If you do decide to venture to the Caribbean in September, the ABC islands might be your best bet.

Caribbean Weather in October

In October, the weather is in the mid to upper 80s, and the beaches stay toasty, though there’s still a risk of hurricanes early in the month.

Palm trees on a white beach

Caribbean Weather in November

The Caribbean weather in November is like early summer with sporadic showers and temps in the 70s and 80s. Hurricane season officially ends November 30.

Caribbean Weather in December

December rolls in as one of the most popular months to cruise the Caribbean because of those looking to trade in white snow for white sand and gray skies for sunshine.

Best Time to Cruise to the Caribbean

Last updated: December 4th, 2023

  • Find a Cruise

A Caribbean cruise vacation conjures up images of swaying palm trees, sun-warmed beaches, aqua waves, and frosty tropical drinks. These pristine islands are one of the most traveled cruise destinations for first-time and seasoned cruisers alike, and knowing the best time to cruise to the Caribbean is crucial to experiencing those enticing visuals.

Scenic landscape of San Juan, Puerto Rico

The Caribbean is a cruiser’s dream vacation in every season. The key is knowing which area to cruise to and when to get full enjoyment out of every moment of your cruise vacation. The best time to cruise the Caribbean for you can depend on your schedule, whether school or work, your travel budget, and your travel desires.

What is the best month to cruise the Caribbean?

Couple walking on a beach in San Juan, Mexico

You can sail to the Caribbean year-round, from January to December. Cruises from Florida to the Caribbean depart from Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Tampa, or you can sail from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

If you’re looking for optimum weather and reduced fares, one of the best months to cruise to the Caribbean is May , the beginning of shoulder season. Shoulder season is that time just before and just after peak or high season, from December to April.

During this time, you can find some terrific offers on longer Caribbean cruises of 10 to 12 days to the Southern Caribbean and for shorter cruises of 5 to 7 days to the Bahamas or Mexico as peak season has just ended and the summer vacation travel rush hasn’t kicked in yet.

White sand beach and mayan ruins in Tulum, Mexico

One reason May is one of the best times to visit the Caribbean on a cruise is that the weather is still near perfect, particularly in the Southern Caribbean islands , with lots of sunny days and balmy evenings perfect for a sunset catamaran cruise or a moonlit stroll on a ship’s deck.

What is the best time of year to go to the Caribbean?

December through April is the peak season for Caribbean cruising. During this time, you’ll experience the best weather and some of the most entertaining holidays and festivals.

If you have a sudden impulse to travel, enjoy a flexible schedule or no schedule at all, and are not picky about stateroom selection, you might be able to snap up a last-minute offer.

If you’re looking to book your vacation at a specific time of year, here are some of the highlights of traveling to the Caribbean during different seasons.

Winter cruises to the Caribbean

Cruising to the warm, sunny Caribbean during the winter months, when the weather up north can be cold, gray, and snowy, is a terrific way to beat the winter blues.

Bathsheba Beach, Barbados

During the months of January through March, you’ll find idyllic tropical weather with temperatures in the mid 70s to low 80s and low humidity. January also marks the beginning of the Caribbean dry season, which greatly minimizes the chance of rain during your cruise vacation.

Another perk of winter cruises (outside of December) is that the high-peak holiday cruise season has just wrapped up. Cruises sailing during early January and February dates are often offered at a great price point since most travelers have headed back to work.

Spring cruises to the Caribbean

During the months of March and April, the best beaches in the Caribbean attract a rush of spring breakers and families looking to take advantage of school breaks.

snorkeling in the Caribbean

If you’re thinking of taking a Caribbean cruise during the spring, we recommend booking your vacation as early as possible, since prices tend to go up and cruise ships often sell out during this popular travel season.

Of course, it’s no surprise why travelers flock to the Caribbean during the early spring months. The weather is often blissful, with temperatures fluctuating between the mid-70s to low-90s. Plus, March and April are still well within the dry season, so you won’t have to worry about rain or storms during your trip down south.

Summer cruises to the Caribbean

Looking for an antidote to a too-crowded summer vacation? A summer cruise to the Caribbean may be just the ticket. When you cruise the Caribbean during June, July, and August, you’ll enjoy less crowded beaches and restaurants.

Carenage Inlet Grenada

The Caribbean is one of the most fun places to go in the summer with your family since the kids are out of school. While the weather can get quite hot and humid during this time of the year, with some islands reaching 90 degrees on average in August, temperatures tend to cool down in the evenings, when they can hit a comfortable range within the low-70s.

During the summer, the chance of rain also increases, so make sure to bring a rain jacket or poncho in case you happen to get caught under some showers. Don’t forget the bug spray either, as high humidity and rain typically mean there are more mosquitoes, too.

Fall cruises to the Caribbean

Hurricane season takes off in September and lasts until early November. If you’re looking for a great special offer on a cruise, look for cruises during this time period.

beach in Curaçao

The ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao) are popular destinations with cruise vacationers during the fall, especially during the later part of hurricane season, since they’re outside of the Caribbean hurricane zone.

If you don’t mind a little bit of unpredictability and tropical rain, the early fall season is also one of the best times to visit the rest of the Caribbean because of the cooler but still warm weather, small crowds, and low fares.

Come prepared with a waterproof jacket, in case you do encounter some showers, and don’t forget to pack anti-nausea aids or medication to prevent seasickness in case the weather makes sailing choppier than usual.

Holiday cruises to the Caribbean

Starting in late November, peak season in the Caribbean takes off again. Holiday cruises fill up quickly, so it’s wise to book as early as possible to get the stateroom, dining time, specialty dining reservations, and shore excursions you want.

People raising glasses for the new year

Even though December is one of the most popular months to travel to the Caribbean, there are still opportunities to find special offers during the first two weeks of the month before the holiday vacation period begins and when sailings may be offered at discounted prices.

Clear blue waters and mountains of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

After hurricane season ends in early November, you can expect ideal weather at all Caribbean cruise ports, with average temperatures in the high 70s to low 80s during the day, low humidity, and little chance of rain.

One of the highlights of taking a cruise to the Caribbean during the holidays is celebrating with Celebrity Cruises on board. On Thanksgiving cruises from Florida , you’ll get a traditional feast with all the trimmings.

On Christmas cruises, expect holiday decorations, carolers, and visits from Santa. You’ll find Easter egg hunts and other fun activities for the whole family during spring holiday sailings. Sail with us on New Year’s Eve and party on to midnight and beyond with a sensational champagne celebration.

When is the best time to cruise to the Eastern Caribbean?

Beautiful beach with waves crashing on rocks

Whether you’re a sun worshipper who wants to kick back on the powdery white sand beaches of each Caribbean port, passionate about scuba diving or snorkeling, or interested in delving into the history and culture of the places you’ll visit, the weather throughout the Eastern Caribbean during peak season is ideal for all activities.

Beautiful beach and skyline of Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Book a June cruise to the Eastern Caribbean for a combination of warm temperatures and low rainfall. Hurricane season begins June 1st but doesn’t usually ramp up until mid-August, so you’ll usually have calm Atlantic and Caribbean seas through June.

Cruise Eastern Caribbean itineraries in July, August , and September, the low season, and you’re likely to find discounted fares due to fine summer weather in most of the Western world, high season for Mediterranean cruises, and the unpredictability of hurricane season. With school out for the summer, and a slower pace in general, families are increasingly taking advantage of this time to travel together.

Couple snorkeling

Island weather tends to be more humid during these months, with temperatures still in the 70s and 80s range, and generally rainier. Plan on early morning beach time, fun trips to water parks, swimming with dolphins or stingrays, snorkeling, diving, and other water sports.

This may be the perfect season for you if you prefer not only less crowded Caribbean islands, but possibly a less crowded onboard cruise experience as well.

When is the best time to cruise to the Southern Caribbean?

People standing on a wooden balcony looking at greenery

Book an early shoulder season cruise in May to take advantage of the best weather with fewer crowds. Explore Fort Amsterdam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in Willemstad, Curacao, then shop the vibrant open-air markets and sample the Dutch take on waffles.

Snorkel or scuba on Kralendijk, Bonaire, one of the world’s most beautiful diving spots that’s equally famous for its delightful pastel houses of pink, green and orange.

The best thing about traveling to the Caribbean is that whatever time or season you choose to cruise, there’s a Celebrity Cruises ship and its crew ready to treat you to a luxury cruise experience as you travel to pristine island destinations.

Discover The Benefits: Why You Should Try Cruising

An image showcasing a picturesque sunset at sea, with a cruise ship gently gliding through calm waters

I have always had a deep love for exploring new places, but sometimes, the process of planning and handling the logistics can be overwhelming. That’s exactly why I became so thrilled when I discovered the simplicity and comfort that come with cruising.

Imagine this: no need to worry about booking hotels, restaurants, or rental cars. Everything is taken care of for you, from transportation to and from the cruise port to the onboard experience itself. And let me tell you, the onboard experience is incredible. You have the freedom to spend your days as you please, whether that’s lounging by the pool, trying out exciting activities, or simply enjoying the breathtaking views.

Plus, the sense of community on a cruise is amazing. You get to meet new people, make friends, and socialize with like-minded individuals. But perhaps the best part of cruising is the unique experiences it offers. Sailing through fjords, exploring exotic locations, and even visiting places in Asia or the Middle East that may be difficult to reach otherwise.

So if you’re looking for an affordable and accessible way to see the world, I highly recommend giving cruising a try.

  • Cruises are easy to plan and convenient, with online portals and assistance from travel agents.
  • The onboard experience offers flexibility, the option to stay onboard and enjoy activities with fewer people, and a friendly environment and sense of community.
  • Cruising allows for unique experiences not found on land, such as sailing through fjords or visiting exotic locations, and makes it easier to visit and explore places in Asia or the Middle East.
  • Cruising is an affordable and accessible way to see the world, with the added benefit of expert advice from someone who has been on numerous cruises.

Planning and Convenience

Planning a cruise is so convenient because I can easily book everything online and get assistance from travel agents if needed. With the help of online portals, I can plan my entire cruise right from the comfort of my own home.

I can browse through different cruise options, compare prices, and choose the one that suits my preferences. If I have any questions or need additional help, I can always reach out to travel agents who are knowledgeable and experienced in the cruise industry. They can provide valuable insights, recommend the best cruise lines, and help me find the perfect itinerary.

The combination of online portals and travel agent assistance makes planning a cruise a breeze, ensuring a stress-free and enjoyable experience from start to finish.

Onboard Experience

Onboard, I can indulge in endless activities, from lounging by the pool to trying out thrilling waterslides, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Here are four reasons why the onboard experience on a cruise is truly remarkable:

Flexibility options: One of the best things about being on a cruise is the freedom to spend your days however you want. Whether you prefer to relax and soak up the sun or get active with sports and fitness classes, the choice is yours.

Socializing opportunities: Cruises offer a unique opportunity to meet new people and make lifelong friends. From organized social events to casual encounters at bars and restaurants, there are plenty of chances to mingle with like-minded individuals. Whether you’re traveling solo or with a group, the friendly atmosphere and sense of community on a cruise ship make it easy to strike up conversations and form connections.

Option to stay onboard: If you’re looking for a more intimate experience with fewer people, you can choose to stay onboard while the ship is docked at a port. This allows you to enjoy all the amenities and activities without the crowds, making it a perfect option for those who prefer a more relaxed and peaceful environment.

Easy to make friends: On a cruise, you’ll be surrounded by fellow passengers who share similar interests and a sense of adventure. This makes it incredibly easy to make friends and socialize throughout your journey. Whether it’s joining a group excursion or simply striking up a conversation at the pool, the friendly and inclusive environment onboard a cruise ship fosters connections and creates lasting memories.

Unique Experiences

Exploring new and exotic locations is an unparalleled adventure that can only be experienced on a cruise. One of the unique experiences that cruises offer is sailing through fjords, which are breathtaking natural wonders found in countries like Norway and New Zealand. Imagine gliding past towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and serene lakes, all from the comfort of your cruise ship. It’s a truly awe-inspiring sight that cannot be replicated on land.

Another advantage of cruising is the opportunity to explore Asia. A Florida man says he believes his 20-year-old son is still alive, days after he jumped from an 18-story cruise ship, according to the North Port Daily Sun .

Francel Parker said that his son, Levion Parker, had multiple flotation devices thrown down to him on April 4 when he leaped over the side of the royal Caribbean ship “Liberty of the Seas” as family members watched in horror.

“As soon as he went off the side, I prayed over him,” the dad told the outlet. “I was confident the prayers I said over my son were heard. I stand on the word of God. I believe he is alive.”

Royal Caribbean told the New York Post in a statement that the ship’s crew “immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the U.S. Coast Guard.”

According to witnesses, Parker was confronted by his father about drinking early on April 4. Levion Parker told his father, “I’ll fix this right now,” a moment before he turned and jumped out of a window and overboard.

“We don’t drink. I’d like to know how my son was served so much alcohol,” the elder Parker told the outlet. The drinking age on a Royal Caribbean cruise departing from the US is 21.

Parker said his son had alcohol on the ship but jumping off the ship was not a suicide attempt, the Sun reported.

The ship was on its way to Fort Lauderdale after four days of sailing between Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island.

The Coast Guard suspended the search for Parker over the weekend.

Coast Guard suspends search for man who jumped from cruise ship in front of stunned family

The United States Coast Guard has called off the search for a 20-year-old man who jumped overboard on a Royal Caribbean cruise as family members stood by, stunned.

Officials said the ship was 57 miles from Great Inagua when the man jumped over the side of the ship, according to United Press International.

“The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the U.S. Coast Guard, who has taken over the search,” a spokesman for Royal Caribbean said in a statement. The Liberty of the Seas is one of Royal Caribbean’s ships.

“Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

The Liberty of the Seas cruise ship is the 35th largest in the world, the Coast Guard said.

Witnesses said the man’s father and brother watched as he jumped, seemingly on a spur of the moment decision, over the side, according to The New York Post.

“I had hung out with him and his brother in the hot tub until 3:30,” passenger Bryan Sims told the Post. “It was standing room only. He sat right beside me the whole time.”

“He was pretty drunk,” Sims continued. “As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess.

“When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all.”

The cruise set sail from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The father of a 20-year-old Florida man who leaped from the 11th floor of a Royal Caribbean cruise ship 57 miles from shore last week believes his "master diver" son is still alive, according to a report.

Francel Parker told the Daily Sun that his son, Levion Parker, works on a commercial fishing boat and said that he had multiple flotation devices thrown down to him on April 4.

"As soon as he went off the side, I prayed over him," the dad told the outlet. "I was confident the prayers I said over my son were heard. I stand on the word of God. I believe he is alive."

The U.S. Coast Guard called off their search in Cuban waters for the missing 20-year-old on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the U.S. Coast Guard 7th District Public Affairs Team confirmed. The 18-level ship was just hours away from port in Fort Lauderdale after four days sailing between Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island when Levion jumped around 4 a.m.

There were reports of an argument before Levion jumped, according to the Sun, but his father told the outlet that he had not been arguing with his son beforehand. Levion's father said his son had alcohol on the ship but that it was not a suicide, the Sun reported.

"We don't drink. I'd like to know how my son was served so much alcohol," the elder Parker told the outlet.

The minimum age for drinking on a Royal Caribbean cruise departing from the U.S. or Caribbean is 21. The company could not immediately be reached for comment on how Parker was served.

Another passenger on the Liberty of the Seas cruise told the New York Post that Parker's dad confronted the 20-year-old and his 18-year-old brother, Seth, after they'd gotten out of the ship's hot tub.

"His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess," Bryan Sims told the outlet. "When we got to them, he said to his dad, 'I'll fix this right now.' And he jumped out the window in front of us all."

Sims told the Post he had been chatting with the Parker brothers before Levion jumped overboard, remarking that the older brother was "pretty drunk." He said that Levion spoke of his jobs on yachts and fishing vessels.

Deborah Morrison, another passenger, told the Post that "there was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately" after Levion jumped.

"His family was horrified, just beside themselves," she told the outlet. "I can't even begin to imagine what they're going through."

"The ship was moving pretty fast because it was during the night, and we were traveling a long distance," Sims recalled to the Post. "We were screaming and his dad was calling everyone to stop the ship… Lots of crew were up top and they started launching the smaller boats to search after we got turned around and back to the area I'm assuming."

Royal Caribbean told the Post in a statement that the ship's crew "immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the U.S. Coast Guard, who has taken over the search."

The next morning was "somber," passenger Amy Phelps Fouse told the Post.

"So many people came out of their cabins to stare at the sea, hoping to be able to aid in finding the person," she said.

Parker's father owns an air conditioning business, and the family was on the cruise as guests of Florida-based air conditioning wholesaler Tropic Supply, the Daily Mail reported. Dozens of their contractors had been invited onto the cruise for the company's 50th anniversary.

Caribbean Weather Forecasts - 10 Days

Caribbean satellite map

Caribbean weather forecasts have average daytime temperatures ranging from the low 80s Fahrenheit in the winter to the high 80s Fahrenheit in the summer. Some destinations during the summer reach into the 90s Fahrenheit or low 30s Celsius.

The dry season goes from December to May. The Caribbean hurricane season with a higher risk of rain lasts from June through November.

Caribbean Monthly Weather

Following is a summary of average Caribbean weather by month. Click on the links for average rainfall and temperatures by month for every major destination.

Caribbean Weather in April

Caribbean weather in April gets even better than March. In my experience, April has the best weather in the Caribbean for any month of the year.

Temperatures mostly climb into the mid 80s Farenheit and high 20s Celsius. They warm to the point where swimming is usually comfortable even in northern destinations. One exception is the Bahamas, which are in the Atlantic but common stops on Caribbean cruises. April also is near the end of the dry season, so most islands have low risk of rain.

Not surprisingly, the Caribbean in May has warmer temperatures than April. But May also brings a brief rainy season to some destinations.

Locations with higher risk of rain include the Bahamas, Cancun, Cozumel, Dominica, Grand Cayman and Jamaica. It’s a better time of year for eastern or especially southern Caribbean cruises to places such as Aruba and Curaçao. It is not the best time for western Caribbean cruises; they have a lower risk of rain from January through April, which is the most popular time to go there.

Caribbean weather in June is the official start of hurricane season, but it’s a weak start. Although hurricanes in June are rare, the average rainfall climbs for many Caribbean islands. The Bahamas have the highest rainfall among major islands with an average of more than eight inches.  Other destinations with higher than normal rainfall include the western Caribbean destinations of Cancun, Cozumel and Grand Cayman. Belize and Costa Rica in the western Caribbean also have high levels of rain, but heavy rainfall is normal for them.

Destinations with a lower risk of rain are in the southern and eastern Caribbean. Islands with a light to moderate risk of rain include Antigua, Aruba, Curaçao and St. Maarten.

July weather in the Caribbean is more risky than June because of increasing rainfall from the Caribbean hurricane season.

The region averages three tropical storms during the month with two becoming hurricanes, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. This compares to one tropical storm and (usually) no hurricanes in June.

It’s a hot month. Average daytime high temperatures reach or go above about 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius for many major destinations. They include Aruba, Cancun, Cozumel, Curaçao, Grand Cayman and St. Maarten.

Early July is less risky than late July because the Caribbean hurricane season gradually gets worse as its gets closer to the peak months of September and October. Anyone planning a summer vacation in the Caribbean should try to go in June rather than July and July rather than August.

August weather is usually grim for the Bahamas. Historically, Nassau averages more than nine inches of rain during the month, according to the Bahamas Department of Meteorology. Anyone planning a Caribbean cruise during August might want to avoid the Bahamas.

Belize, Costa Rica, Dominica, Guadeloupe and Martinique also historically have high levels of rain in August. Islands with the lowest average rainfall are Aruba and Curaçao. Destinations with moderate rainfall include Antigua, St. Maarten and St. Thomas.

Heat reaches the highest point of the year for many destinations. Average daytime temperatures often go above 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius for Aruba, Cancun, Cayman Islands, Cozumel and Curaçao.

September weather in the Caribbean historically is the worst weather of the year. Three types of people visit the Caribbean in September :

  • People who don’t know that September is the worst weather month.
  • People who do know but take a chance anyway.
  • People who see a good 10-day weather forecast and book their hotels and flights at the last minute.

September weather is the worst of the year because it is the peak time of activity for the annual Caribbean hurricane season. Historically, the region averages four tropical storms with three becoming hurricanes and two of the three becoming major hurricanes.

The dry island of Aruba in the southern Caribbean still is the leader for the lowest risk of rain, followed closely by nearby Curaçao. Many other destinations average between six and 13 inches of rain. Cancun, Cozumel and the Central American countries get hit especially hard. Daytime temperatures for most of them average in the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit or about 30 Celsius.

October is the second worst month of the year for Caribbean weather thanks to the annual hurricane season. Visitors in October may hope for better weather than September, which historically has the worst. But they might not get it. October weather also is the second worst month of the hurricane season with higher than normal rainfall. The month historically averages four tropical storms.

A handful of destinations have lower risk of rain. Aruba and Curaçao historically have the lowest of any with three inches each, although these amounts are more than what both islands usually experience. Among all destinations, they have the lowest risk of rain. St. Maarten ranks third.

Places to avoid with an average of eight or more inches of rain include Belize, Cancun, Cozumel, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Grand Cayman and St. Lucia. Despite the bad historical numbers, some Caribbean cruise and resort vacationers may get lucky.

November is the final month of the Caribbean hurricane season.

It has a much lower risk of rain than September or October for many Caribbean destinations. But it’s still the third worst month of the year for rain.

Caribbean weather in November historically averages no hurricanes and only one tropical storm every other year. But rainfall is higher than average for nearly all islands in the region, especially the popular cruise ports at Barbados, Grand Cayman, St. Lucia, St. Maarten and St. Thomas.

The driest islands include Aruba, Bahamas, Curacao, Jamaica and Cuba. Temperatures stay in the mid to upper 80s Fahrenheit for most destinations. Cruise and resort visitors won’t have a problem staying warm.

Our second eastern Caribbean cruise in December had fantastic weather with temperatures in the low 90s Fahrenheit and almost no rain. But we had good luck. It was warmer and drier than usual.

Temperatures average in the mid 80s Fahrenheit during the day for most destinations. Rainfall averages about three to four inches during the month, which is slightly more than the dry season in the spring.

December is a popular month for Caribbean vacations because of better weather than the previous four to five months. People also flock here from northern destinations to get away from winter and take advantage of Christmas break from schools.

The better options for weather in December include Antigua, Aruba, Grand Cayman and the Virgin Islands because they have lower risk of rain. Cancun, Cozumel, Jamaica and San Juan are usually still a bit wet.

The Bahamas are dry but cooler because of their northern location. See more about December weather .

The Caribbean in January offers a warm escape from cold northern winters. Most major destinations have an average high temperature in the low to mid 80s Fahrenheit or high 20s Celsius. Low rainfall is common because the region is starting the annual dry season.

Yes, daytime temperatures are usually warm for most destinations. But nighttime temperatures are sometimes cool enough to bring down water temperatures by the time morning comes around. They become uncomfortable for swimming at times, especially in combination with strong trade winds. Western and southern Caribbean weather is ideal during these winter months. Note that the Bahamas are especially cooler in January.

My trips to the Caribbean in February have taught me to expect some of the lowest rain of the year but also some of the coolest water temperatures. Go to farther south destinations for warmer weather. Avoid northern destinations such as the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos.

I suggest planning on shopping, shore excursions and other land activities in the mornings until temperatures get warmer. Hit the beach in the early to mid afternoon for the warmest land and water temperatures of the day.

Our February weather guide has average temperatures for every major destination.

March weather in the Caribbean is nearly ideal for a combination of warm temperatures and low risk of rain for most destinations. It’s one of the best times to visit for a cruise or hotel vacation. It’s also a popular time because of spring break from schools.

Average daytime temperatures reach the mid 80s Fahrenheit or or high 20s Celsius for many major destinations.

Western Caribbean cruises to Cozumel, Grand Cayman and other islands are especially popular during this month. Beware spring break that will flood some destinations with families and college students. Cancun in particular often gets quite busy.

March weather also offers one of the driest months of the year for the Caribbean. Many islands have two inches of rain or less for the entire month compared to as much as eight to 10 inches in the fall.

Subscriber only, travel | cruise demand leaves pandemic in rearview with record passengers, more construction on tap.

MIAMI BEACH — The COVID pandemic drove the cruise industry to a standstill, but numbers released Tuesday signal the years of comeback are officially over with more expansion on tap.

More than 31.7 million passengers took cruises worldwide in 2023, said Kelly Craighead, Cruise Line International Association president and CEO, speaking at the annual Seatrade Cruise Global conference at Miami Beach Convention Center.

CLIA is the lobbying group for member cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, Carnival, Norwegian, MSC and most other major brands.

The pandemic shut down sailing from March 2020 with only a small number of ships coming back online 18 months later in summer 2021. Cruise lines didn’t return to full strength until partially through 2022, so it wasn’t until a full year of sailing in 2023 that the industry could get a real handle on just what the demand had grown to as people returned to vacation travel.

“We are an industry that’s resilient and thriving all around the world, breaking records in ways we might never have imagined,” she said.

The 2023 total is 2 million more than the industry had in 2019. CLIA projects 34.1 million in 2024 growing to 34.6 million in 2025. It’s still a miniscule chunk of the overall travel pie of more than 1.3 billion, but cruise’s share is growing.

She noted that surveys of travelers who would consider a cruise for a vacation are at an all-time high, noting that 82% who had previously cruised said they would cruise again, but more importantly, among those who had never sailed, 71% would consider it.

The youngest generations — Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z — are the biggest drivers.

The fleet for the growing demand continues as well, including the introduction this year of the world’s largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas.

She said CLIA member lines had more than 300 ships sailing globally for the first time in 2023, with 14 new ships that began sailing in 2023 and another eight expected before the end of the year. They have 88 new ships on order through 2028.

Already this year, both Royal Caribbean Group and Carnival Corp. announced major new ship construction deals, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings added to that this week with its order of eight more vessels across its three brands.

The heads of those groups were on stage to discuss where the industry is headed and enjoy their recent success.

Carnival Corp.’s president and CEO Josh Weinstein put it in a way that gained plaudits from fellow panelists and others at the conference.

“The concept of pent-up demand for cruising is gone,” he said. “We have been cruising for three years, right? It’s over. This is natural demand because we all provide amazing experiences. We delivered happiness to literally 31 million guests last year. And people see it, they feel it.”

A big part of what cruising missed during the pandemic he said was that word-of-mouth promotion that is needed to convince people to try their product.

“We now have 31 million people getting off our ships and going home and telling their friends and family who have never cruised before, ‘You don’t know what you’re missing.’ ‘This is amazing.'”

All of the leaders echoed the industry line that they offer a much better value than land-based vacations, but that the experience gap between the two has now shifted in their favor coming out of the pandemic.

“The appreciation for building memories with your friends and family coming out of COVID is at extraordinarily high levels,” said Jason Liberty, president & CEO at Royal Caribbean Group. “Also wealth transfer, right? Grandparents wanting to see that wealth transfer live, watching their kids and their grandkids experience that is also at an all-time high. … We have the secular trends of people buying less stuff, they want experiences. We’re in the experience business.”

Another bright aspect to the industry has been the spillover effect of all of the new ships since the pandemic, said Harry Sommer, president & CEO at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

“Their new products are so extraordinary, and so much better than what was delivered back in ’15, ’16 and ’17, that it’s driving additional excitement for the entire industry,” Somer said. “When any new ship is delivered, no matter whether it’s part of our portfolio or the other portfolios, demand improves for all of us because it adds excitement to the industry.”

U.S. man with dementia disappears after leaving his cruise ship in Mexico

  • Updated: Apr. 09, 2024, 8:02 a.m. |
  • Published: Apr. 09, 2024, 8:00 a.m.
  • Chris Mautner | [email protected]

A 66-year-old South Carolina man has been missing for several days after vanishing while on vacation in Mexico.

Edmond Bradley Solomon III, of Charleston, was last seen on April 3, after getting off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in Cozumel, Mexico, according to Fox News.

A few minutes after getting off the ship, he and his wife, Mimi, went to use the restrooms at the terminal. When his wife came out, he wasn’t waiting for her and wasn’t in the bathroom.

“That was the point that we knew he was lost,” Soloman’s daughter, Savannah Miller said to WCBD. “We know that no matter where he was he would have difficulty understanding what was going on and communicating his needs due to his dementia. I think everyone just immediately became so terrified for his safety.”

His family said he was recently diagnosed frontotemporal dementia , which affects a person’s behavior rather than their memory.

“He sometimes says odd things and behaves erratically — or oddly — because he’s just doing what he knows how to do,” Miller said to the news station. “He can’t process the same way you or I can.”

Solomon was last seen along the road of Isla de la Pasión in Cozumel on Wednesday evening. He was wearing a white T-shirt, grey shorts, and dark sunglasses, WCBD said.

Soloman was reported missing on April 3 and a search and rescue operation was launched that same day, the New York Post said. A GoFundMe has been set up to help pay for the family’s travel expenses.

“I think the best thing that anyone can do is just spread the word,” Miller said to WCBD. Start yelling and screaming. Elevate it as much as possible so that there is awareness and so everyone on the island is looking for him.”

Caribbean Cruise Weather by Month

caribbean cruise april weather

Prepare to be awed as you sail into the best Caribbean cruise destinations with Princess, where relaxation and adventure are the only things on your to-do list. With any of our itineraries, experience the island lifestyle that keeps so many guests coming back for more. Here are the best Caribbean cruise destinations to consider for your next adventure.

With abundant sunshine and clear blue skies, Caribbean cruise weather is known for being consistent year-round. Here’s everything to know about typical weather forecasts on a Caribbean cruise.

Caribbean Cruise Weather in January and February

Even in the middle of winter, Caribbean cruise weather feels like a tropical oasis. As the start of the dry season, January yields the least amount of rain all year. While climates will vary depending on which region you’re sailing, expect temperatures to range from the upper 80s during the day to the mid-60s in the evening. If you’re cruising to ports like Aruba or Bonaire in the Southern Caribbean , you’ll likely experience the warmest conditions, as they’re the closest to the equator. Take advantage of the unique winter climates by jet skiing along one of Aruba’s pristine beaches or strolling through the lush botanical gardens in Martinique.

Caribbean Cruise Weather in March and April

The Caribbean springs to life in March and April as festival season begins. With slightly warmer temperatures and little-to-no-clouds in sight, there are even more reasons to celebrate. Visit Grand Cayman in April and experience Cayfest, the island’s annual celebration of art, music and cultural diversity. During the dry season, let the radiant sun feed your imagination without worry of anyone — or anything — raining on your parade. With waters around 75 degrees Fahrenheit, take a dip in the Caribbean Sea while visiting Bamboo Beach Club. Even Eastern Caribbean islands — like Princess Cays® in the Bahamas — anticipate ideal Caribbean cruise weather.

Caribbean Cruise Weather in May and June

Summer weather forecasts on a Caribbean cruise bring a variety of flavors to each region. While the Southern Caribbean maintains its sunny disposition, other destinations welcome refreshing ocean breezes. Occasional light showers are the perfect excuse to head inside and tour the Graycliff Chocolatier, where you can create your own decadent masterpiece with local ingredients like mango and lime. Or sip on an aromatic flight of wines at Bahama Barrels while hearing stories from locals. Then, cruise into clearer conditions and partake in one of the many music festivals that dot the rural roads like the Pure Grenada Music Festival in May or the St. Kitts Music Festival in June. Whether swimming in the crystalline ocean or singing in the refreshing rain, come prepared with a light rain jacket, loose clothing and a heart full of wonder.

Caribbean Cruise Weather in July and August

For the quintessential summer vacation, cruise to the Caribbean in July and make the most of your days and nights. With More Ashore late night departures and overnight stays, revel in the warm evening climates that invite you to set sail on an Aruba sunset cruise or frolic along the Mambo Beach Boulevard in Curacao. During the daytime, bask in typical Caribbean cruise weather ranging from the mid-70s to upper 80s. Spend time floating in the warmest ocean temperatures of the year, or sunbathe on the golden beaches of the Western Caribbean during their driest month. If you’re cruising to the Eastern region , soak up the summer sun on any of the dazzling beaches, or head indoors for a taste of true Caribbean culture. In St. Kitts, delight in a relaxing swim at Pinney’s Beach followed by a festive island lunch. Or join a game of volleyball when you arrive at Honeymoon Beach in St. Thomas, and then cool off in the refreshing waters.

As July comes to a close, the calming sound of August rain brings an air of utter relaxation to the islands. During this month, locals head indoors to prepare for the busy season ahead. The weather in the Caribbean in August also means that many excursions are put on pause. As so, Princess does not sail to these regions during late summer and early fall. Instead, we invite guests to visit these breathtaking islands when the sand is dry and the waters are calm.

Caribbean Cruise Weather in October and November

While the rainy season lasts from the beginning of October through November, these are some of the best months to cruise to the Caribbean . Sip and savor your way through the Barbados Food and Rum Festival in October where local chefs prepare culinary treasures that give you a taste of island life. In the Grand Cayman, don your tricorn hat and line the streets to watch pirates invade George Town during Pirates Week Festival. Enjoy rhythmic music, family-friendly competitions and local cuisine alongside locals and visitors. Besides the occasional rainfall, Caribbean cruise weather in November will be similar to that in early summer with temperatures in the 70s and 80s.

Caribbean Cruise Weather in December

The holidays offer even more reasons to celebrate in the Caribbean this December. Trade the snow-filled driveways and icy roads for warm white-sand shores and refreshing ocean waters on a holiday cruise . You can still enjoy a white Christmas on board with life-like snow in the Atrium. Or enjoy hot chocolate and gingerbread-house building throughout your time on board. Then, make your way ashore where balmy Caribbean cruise weather encourages you to float down the tree-lined rivers of Falmouth, Jamaica, on a bamboo raft. Or dive beneath the water to explore rainbow-colored reefs and marine life on a snorkeling expedition in Martinique. With adventures teeming both above and below the surface, pack your bags for a   winter to remember.

From January to July, these tropical islands experience an array of weather forecasts. On a Caribbean cruise with Princess, embark on an ideal adventure amidst refreshing rain or sunny skies.

'I believe he is alive': Cruise passenger who went overboard a week ago is a master diver, father says

Levion Parker went over overboard from a cruise ship in the Bahamas a week ago - but his father denies reports the pair were arguing beforehand.

The father of a 20-year-old man who went overboard from a cruise ship in the Bahamas believes he is still alive - despite the coast guard calling off the search.

"Levion Parker fell or jumped into the sea from a Royal Caribbean cruise in the early hours of 4 April, off the Bahamas.

His father Francel Parker said, contrary to some media reports, it wasn't a suicide - and that the family believes he is still alive.

The Parker family, from North Port in Florida, were travelling on the Liberty of the Seas when Levion Parker went overboard 57 miles off Great Inagua, the southernmost island in the Bahamas.

Francel Parker told local North Port newspaper The Daily Sun his son was a master diver working on a commercial fishing boat.

He said he threw six life rings off the boat in an effort to save him.

Some media outlets have reported the father and son were arguing before the incident, but Francel Parker denied this was the case.

He said his son had been drinking alcohol but suggested that was out of the ordinary, telling The Daily Sun: "We don't drink."

He added: "As soon as he went off the side, I prayed over him. I was confident the prayers I said over my son were heard.

"I believe he is alive."

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement: "The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard."

The coast guard then took over the search, which was called off at the weekend.

"Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest's family during this difficult time," the spokesperson added.

The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.

Subscriber only, travel | 8 new ships coming to norwegian cruise line, sister brands plus dock at great stirrup cay.

caribbean cruise april weather

The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.

The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.

And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.

The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.

In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.
