Synopsis [ ]

In the attraction, guests hop on board the tram, and Sally and Cruz Ramirez greet them and guide them through natural and mechanical wonders along the legendary Route 66. At first Cruz is very enthusiastic to see the whole thing, but Sally tells Cruz to relax and go slow. Then Cruz spots the World’s Biggest Lug-Nut with Lightning McQueen in it along with Guido and Luigi . Sally also tells Cruz that there are many attractions to enjoy, such as "The Ghost Garage", "The Copper Canyon Traffic Maze" and "Lonestone Magnet Mine". The tram then approaches the Car-tastrophe Canyon where a Dinoco Tanker Truck can been seen. Suddenly, the Canyon catches on fire and water sprays everywhere (similar to the former scene of the Catastrophe Canyon). Luckily, the tanker truck survives. Afterwards, Sally is reminded that Mater has been making his own art: a statue of him with McQueen and Doc Hudson made out of junk, The Great Whitewall of China and The Statue of Lizzie-ty. The tram passes Mater making a model of the Eiffel Tower, with Filmore very interested in Mater's masterpiece. As the tram arrives at the end of the ride, Cruz and Sally say goodbye to the riders and tell them to see the Route out there. Once the tram stops and the ride ends, guests make their departure.

Cars Land Guide – Everything You Need To See, Do and Eat

Cars Land at Disney California Adventure Park takes guests on a road trip down Route 66 and through the quaint town of Radiator Springs from Pixar’s Cars . Featuring whimsical nods to the Cars world, all-American fare the whole family will love, and one of the best rides at Disneyland, Cars Land is well worth a pit stop during your day at California Adventure Park .

Whether you’re a Pixar lover, an adrenaline junkie , a family with kids or a diner food fan, Cars Land is sure to get your motor running. So, buckle up and enjoy the ride as we cruise through this animated corner of Disneyland.

Cars Land, Disneyland’s Ode to Route 66 & Radiator Springs

Racers attraction signage with Lightning McQueen

Disneyland Resort’s Cars Land opened its doors to guests more than a decade ago on June 13, 2012, taking over what was once the Timon parking lot and part of the former Bountiful Valley Farm, one of California Adventure Park’s original rides.

Upon its opening, Cars Land transformed Disney California Adventure Park from an afterthought into a vacation power player when visiting the Happiest Place on Earth.

Design of Cars Land at Disney California Adventure Park

Cars Land transports guests to the high-octane world of Cars , specifically the sleepy hamlet of Radiator Springs, the town Lightning McQueen gets stranded in during the series’ first entry. The land opened with three attractions alongside restaurants inspired by the diners you’d find cruising down Route 66 and a couple of shops.

In fact, not only are most elements in Radiator Springs directly inspired by actual landmarks located along Route 66, a few of the buildings in the land are even exact replicas. But, it wasn’t just the real and fictional buildings Imagineers wanted to faithfully recreate. It was the atmosphere, too.

One thing is certain, from the neon-lit streets of the desert town of Radiator Springs to the tailfin ridgeline of the Cadillac Mountain Range towering dramatically in the background, Cars Land is an Instagrammer ’s dream in an already photogenic park.

Cars Land with road and buildings at night

As you can probably imagine, this charming section of Disney California Adventure Park is fun to visit any time of year. However, if possible, try to plan your trip for during the holidays.

Around Halloween (or Haul-O-Ween as it’s known in Cars Land), the land receives a ghoulish glow-up, like the Cozy Cone Motel being turned into a quintet of cone-like jack-o-lanterns. During the winter holidays , meanwhile, a flurry of festive details are added, such as Christmas ornaments made from car parts and white-wall tire wreaths.

What to See, Do and Eat at Cars Land

Disneyland Resort’s Cars Land at California Adventure Park has a slew of attractions, restaurants and shopping opportunities that are sure to shift your vacation into overdrive. Get your motor running and read on for a breakdown of everything that’s available in this high-octane part of Disneyland.

Cars Land Disneyland Rides

Cars Land at Disney California Adventure Park is fully loaded, offering a family-friendly thrill ride and two quirky, Cars -inspired attractions your kiddos will love. From a thrilling drag race through Ornament Valley with Lightning McQueen and Sally to lively joyrides alongside Mater and Luigi, these Cars Land rides are not to be missed.

Radiator Springs Racers

Radiator Springs dressed up for the Holidays

Motor on over to Radiator Springs Racers for a road trip you won’t soon forget. This rollicking ride takes guests past majestic desert vistas, through the cutest little community in Carburetor County, Radiator Springs, and face-to-face with friends from Cars , like Lightning McQueen, Mater, Sally, Doc Hudson and more.

Then, it’s off to the drag races for a thrilling sprint to the finish line.  As you cruise along, be sure to keep an eye out for the dramatic peaks of the Cadillac Range. Not only is each summit designed to resemble the tail fin of a classic Cadillac circa 1957 to 1962, but this revved-up rockwork is also an homage to one of Route 66’s most iconic landmarks, the Cadillac Ranch art installation by Amarillo, Texas.

Radiator Springs Racers Ride Cars Land - Full POV

Like Test Track, the ride’s predecessor in Epcot , Radiator Springs Racers is one of the most popular rides in the park and can get busy. To save time waiting in line, consider upgrading to Lightning Lane access with an Individual Attraction Selection.

Lightning Lane Availability: Individual Lightning Lane

Height Restriction: At least 40” or taller

Best for: Kids, Tweens, Teens, Adults

Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree

Attraction signage at night with lights

Starring everyone’s favorite tow truck, Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree puts guests in the driver’s seat of a tiny, square-dancing tractor. Groove to the Mater-provided tunes and hold on tight as your rusty chariot whips and twirls across the dancefloor.

This adorable attraction isn’t just inspired by the stampede of cow-like tractors from the first Cars movie. It’s also a reference to Oatman, Arizona, a town along Route 66 overrun by a herd of wild burros.

Mater's Junkyard Jamboree Disneyland 4K

For a seasonal surprise, plan your visit during Halloween for Mater’s Graveyard JamBOORee or Christmas for Mater’s Jingle Jamboree, when the ride receives a holiday-inspired glow-up complete with festive music and décor.

Lightning Lane Availability: None

Height Restriction: At least 32” or taller

Best for: All ages

Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters

Tire shop with red rock backdrop

Go for a spin around another Cars -sized dancefloor at Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters – this time from behind the wheel of an Italian import. As the story goes, Luigi has invited his cousins from Carsoli, Italy to visit his little piece of Italy in Radiator Springs. And what better way to celebrate the old country than with some traditional dancing in the tire yard?

During the ride, you’ll kick up your wheels with “car-eographed” dancing to lively Italian music, all from the seat of a zippy roadster styled after an Italian rear-engine micro-car from the 1950s. Each of these cavorting convertibles is unique, including signature dance moves. Like Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters also gets a temporary facelift during the holidays, including Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween and Luigi’s Joy to the Whirl.

Before you put the pedal to the metal, be sure to pose for a picture in front of the attraction’s tilting tire tower. Not only does that precarious pillar of tires hint at the Leaning Tower of Pisa from Luigi’s Italian homeland, but it also nods to the town of Groom near the Texas panhandle, which boasts an intentionally jaunty water tower.

Cars Land Restaurants

Cars Land isn’t just home to one of the best rides at Disneyland Resort. With fun restaurants cooking up accessible eats inspired by the diners and greasy spoons of Route 66, it’s also the perfect place for a pit stop. If your tank is running on empty, refuel for more theme park adventures at one of these quick-service locations .

Cozy Cone Motel

Big Cone buildings serving food

Cars Land’s cutest spot for a bite to eat is the Cozy Cone Motel. Made up of five massive, bright orange traffic cones, the “i-cone-ic” Cozy Cone Motel is a cheeky nod to Wigwam Village, a teepee-style motel along Route 66 in Holbrook, Arizona.

At Cars Land, this real-life version of the kitschy motor inn from the movie is your snack destination. Each cone has a counter-service window selling different eats and sweets, such as macaroni & cheese and chili “cone” queso in a cone-shaped bread bowl, ice cream cones, churros, “popcone,” and chimichangas and icy “cone-coctions” like lemonade.

Cost:  Snacks – $14.99 and under per adult

Cuisine:  American

What to Get: Bread Cones (Chili Cone Queso and Bacon Mac ‘n’ Cheese), Churros

Reservations: None, Mobile Order available

Flo’s V8 Café

No joyride down Route 66 would be complete without a meal at a drive-in restaurant, and Flo’s V8 Café is about as quintessential as it gets. The retro eatery is made to resemble a Ford V-8 engine, complete with architectural details referencing car parts like spark plugs and pistons. Gearheads will especially appreciate the many automotive touches throughout, like tailpipe light fixtures, vintage gas pumps and much more.

Dining restaurant and gas station

Its shining chrome, stainless steel and neon also echo the Streamline Moderne style of mainstay Route 66 restaurants like the 66 Diner in Albuquerque, New Mexico, or the 5 & Diner in Tulsa, Oklahoma, along with their menus of comfort food favorites. After greasing your gears with fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, spend some time checking out the many mementos from Flo and Doc Hudson.

Cost:  Lunch and Dinner – $14.99 and under per adult

Discount Disney Gift Cards at Target

What to Get: Flo’s Famous Fried Chicken, Ka-Cheeseburger, Flo’s Classic Shakes

Fillmore’s Taste-In

Unlike Flo’s V8 Café or even the Cozy Cone Motel, Fillmore’s Taste-In doesn’t offer anything too substantial when it comes to food. Instead, this psychedelic snack cart serves up an assortment of healthy, road trip-worthy snacks like whole fruit, bags of chips and Babybel cheese.

Signage made from mufflers

However, the highlight of Fillmore’s Taste-In is its eye-catching design. This service station shaped like a geodesic dome takes its style cues from the former Ortega’s Indian Market located in Lupton, Arizona. Cruise by at night for a groovy light show.

Cuisine:  American, Vegetarian

Reservations: None

Cars Land Entertainment

When you aren’t racing through Radiator Springs, fueling up on all-American comfort food or posing for pictures in front of the land’s many social media-ready scenes, we recommend you put on the brakes and take some time to meet the vehicles that call Cars Land home.

Meet the Residents of Radiator Springs

It wouldn’t be a trip to The Happiest Place on Earth without meeting some Disneyland characters . A few of your favorite four-wheeled friends from Cars greet guests in front of the Cozy Cone Motel throughout the day, including Lightning McQueen, Mater and even Cruz.

Mater Driving Inside Cars Land in the Evening

For Halloween (or Haul-O-Ween), the cars even get into the spooky spirit and don special “car-stumes.” Meanwhile, during Christmas, Mater channels Santa Claus.

Keep in mind that meeting the characters from Cars isn’t like a regular meet-and-greet with Mickey Mouse or Cinderella. So, while you can take tons of pictures, don’t expect a hug or a signature for your autograph book.

Availability: 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM

Cars Land Shops

Looking for a memento of your cruise through Cars Land? Every good road trip needs a proper souvenir, whether that’s a cheesy magnet, keychain or shot glass. To commemorate your time on this animated stretch of Route 66, stop by one of these Cars Land merchandise locations for a little shopping.

Radiator Springs Curios Shop

If you’re on the hunt for a Cars -inspired souvenir worthy of the film’s Route 66 heritage, then swing by the Radiator Springs Curios Shop. This adorable store is your one-stop shop for Cars swag with a more retro aesthetic.

Building with neon signage at night

Like many souvenir stands along Route 66, the outside of the Radiator Springs Curios Shop is also plastered with signs pleading with passersby to make a pit stop before it’s too late and all sorts of other Route 66 knickknacks.

Sarge’s Surplus Hut

Sarge is a retired army jeep who is known for using his military experience to keep Radiator Springs running in mint condition. While Sarge’s Surplus Hut from the films typically sells military supplies to aspiring preppers, the Cars Land version swaps survival gear for souvenirs. The shop is located in an authentic Quonset hut similar to those dotted throughout the Mojave Desert not too far from Barstow along Route 66.

Ramone’s House of Body Art

While you can’t get a decal, wax or new paint job from Ramone’s House of Body Art, you can get something else to cover your body, like a Cars -themed shirt or something from auto-centric clothing lines like Champions Custom Speed Shop or Low ‘n’ Slow.

You’ll also find other nods to car culture and Route 66 around the shop, including custom artwork by famed car designer Chip Foose. Even the building itself is an exact replica of an Art Deco beauty in Shamrock, Texas, a former gas station and restaurant called the U-Drop Inn.

Well, road warriors, that brings our trip to Cars Land to an end. Have you explored this animated corner of California Adventure Park? Which Cars Land restaurant or ride is your favorite? Just Theme Parks

Cars Road Trip Review: Disneyland Paris’s New Ride

Cars Road Trip is the newest attraction at Disneyland Paris, having opened on June 17 th  2021. The attraction is located in the Walt Disney Studios Park and can be accessed by walking through the Toy Story section of the park.

The attraction itself is a recreation of the Studio Tram Tour making it, in our opinion, the oddest overlay Disney has ever done on an attraction. The attraction still utilises the same tram tour vehicles and the main part of the experience is still the old “Catastrophe Canyon” which has been rethemed to fit the new Cars theme. Outside of this section, Disney have added several new set pieces including both a Lightning McQueen and Mater animatronic.

The Studio Tram Tour at Paris was certainly in need of refurbishment and we definitely feel that the Cars Road Trip is an upgrade on the old attraction. However, the attraction itself falls way short of what you expect from a Disney attraction. The level of theming throughout the route is very much lacking and that which exists looks cheap and falls way below the level a company like Disney should be aiming at.

The attraction’s brand new and relocated station, designed to look like a tourist booth and inspired by mid-century modern architecture, is probably the largest improvement to have been made. As huge fans of Cars Land located at Disney’s California Adventure we did enjoy standing in the queue and hearing some of our favourite songs that play in the incredible area of the Anaheim based park.

Another positive regarding this attraction is its high capacity in a park littered with rides with a very low hourly guest put through rides, such as Crush’s Coaster and RC Racer.

Overall, we did enjoy the attraction for what it is but we hope, and expect, that the future planned additions to the Studios Park are of a much higher quality than that of Cars Road Trip.

Of course the theming comes from Disney Pixar’s much loved CARS franchise featuring Lightning McQueen & friends!

Those of you who visited the park prior to 2021 will know & love the premise of this attraction which was formerly used as the Studio Tram Tours attraction.

Who Loves Road Trips?

We all do! Buckle up & get ready for the road trip of your dreams as Sally Carrera & Cruz Ramirez guide you along the famous Route 66 highway. Make sure to have your camera ready as there will be a lot of great sightseeing along the way. Boasting an impressive 168 passengers per ride vehicle, this is an attraction which will see thousands upon thousands of guests per day.

The ride is split into 3 unique areas :

First stop: A nutty roadside attraction – Snap a pic and don’t forget to wave to Lightning (Flash) McQueen, Luigi, and Guido at the World’s Largest Lugnut. Second stop: Power shower!  There’s nothing like a natural carwash in a flash flood for some extra shower power. See how a huge water tanker likes to shake up his cleaning routine in Cars-tastrophe Canyon. Final Stop: An Artistic Mater-piece!  Mater is well known for his impressive junkyard creations. Today he’s debuting his latest Mater-piece– can you guess what it is? Honk if you love this motor monument!

There are so many photo opportunities & sights to see that this leisurely road trip is one you will want to do time & time again. Get ready to witness “The Ghost Garage”, “Copper Canyon Traffic Maze”, “Lonestone Magnet Mine”, “The Eiffuel Tower”, “The Great Whitewall of China” & ” The Statue of Lizziety” !

Cars Road Trip Tips The best view of each scene is from the very centre of the tram but you may need to ask a cast member if you specifically want to be seated here. This attraction can have fairly high wait times throughout the day but if there is a parade on or the seated shows around Disney Studios are about to start you can get on much quicker. Very young children who will not appreciate large bursts of fire or heavy waterfall effects  should be seated away from the edge of the tram.

How long does a roundtrip take? Is it considerably shorter than the Studio Tram Tour?

It is shorter than the original tram tours. I would say around half as long with tram tours taking around 12 mins & the new road trip only around 6 minutes. There is of course only one scene now (calamity canyon) & we have lost the London scene & some road, scenery etc.

Cars Road Trip Disneyland Paris Experience

The brand new Cars Road Trip Disneyland Paris experience had its soft opening in June but what is involved in this Cars themed experience?

Cars Road Trip

Brand new for 2021 was the Cars Road Trip attraction at Walt Disney Studios Park.

A bold decision was made by Disney to replace the iconic Studio Tram Tour and working with Disney Imagineers and Pixar the Cars Road Trip was born.

Guests head towards a loading station where visitors will board a tram and head on an adventure with Lightning McQueen and Mater.

Along the way, you’ll discover wacky roadside attractions along the famous Route 66 highway.

The loading station for the attraction is actually the first building built outside of the current perimeter of Walt Disney Studios Park.

The Cars Road Trip ride is part of an ongoing expansion that will see the addition of a new Frozen themed land and a Marvel themed land due to open in 2022.

For me, rebranding this attraction around Cars was a very strange choice indeed, especially when theming it around a studio tram tour that should be promoting movie-making, studio production and special effects.

I’d rather not be exploring the finer details of Catastrophe Canyon but the animatronics were cool to see if albeit limited to that one movie franchise now.

Whilst I hadn’t been on the original studio tour there are many POV’s on the internet and it was certainly in need of a refurbishment and whilst Cars is an upgrade it seems to fall short of what you’d expect from a Disney style attraction.

Upon experiencing the ride in person (not via POV’s) I confirmed all my above suspicions and judgements.

The ride seems rather empty as you go around during its introduction and you just expect much more theming pieces and things to look at as your dream takes you around.

It feels as though it’s very much rushed and it doesn’t add any quality to the already much weaker Walt Disney Studios Park.

The animatronics are absolutely wonderful as you’d expect but the flame and water effect, whilst entertaining was the only thing that happens on the tram tour.

So much more could have been done on the tour with numerous ride buildings the tram could enter to immerse you into a more interactive experience.

Tunnels to witness Lightning McQueen racing or riding through an indoor speedway or similar.

Catastrophe Canyon is the only area explored on the tour and a few flames and water flood later it was done.

With slow rides in the park such as Crush’s Coaster and RC Racer the Cars Road Trip does eat up those queues but it’s offering a much-dampened experience compared to other rides in that area.

Arguably the weakest addition to a Disneyland Paris line-up for quite some time and I only hope the Marvel expansion goes some way to improve the park considerably.

Cars Land Tips & Tricks

cars road trip disney land

Cars Land at Disney California Adventure has solidified its place as one of the most popular theme park lands at Disneyland Resort. This guide covers saving time in line for Radiator Springs Racers, what to eat, secret spots & moments, and more in this truly magical area of DCA. ( Updated June 15, 2022 .)

For Summer 2022, we’re revisiting this guide to Cars Land with some fresh tips & tricks in honor of the 10th Anniversary of Cars Land! It’s hard to believe that Disney California Adventure 2.0 is now a decade old, existing almost as long as the original incarnation of the park. Both Buena Vista Street and Cars Land still feel simultaneously new and like they’ve always been a part of the park.

Starting with a drive down memory lane, Cars Land opened on June 15, 2012. The new land played fast and loose with the park’s California theme, expanding that to Route 66 while bringing guests into Radiator Springs. The land felt like stepping into the “set” of a Pixar film, and still does! Spanning a whopping 12 acres, Cars Land today remains something special.

Cars Land is also one of the biggest reasons why Walt Disney World fans should make the road trip to Disneyland Resort. The entire Route 66 is fantastic, right up there with New Orleans Square as unique-to-Disneyland lands that every Walt Disney World fan should see. (We’d also include Buena Vista Street, Grizzly Peak, and Avengers Campus on that list–albeit much lower down.)

With that said, let’s get this guide to Cars Land rolling! (Okay, sorry for that awful pun…but it’s pretty consistent with the generally corny writing style of this blog, so are you really that surprised?)

5. Saving Time

cars road trip disney land

Rope drop at Disney California Adventure might as well be called the “Race for Racers,” because the vast majority of guests prioritize Radiator Springs Racers over everything else. This remains true a decade later, even after the addition of other popular newer rides like Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout.

There’s a reason Radiator Springs Racers is #5 on our list of  Disneyland & DCA Ride Rankings , and the #1 attraction in Disney California Adventure. It’s a masterpiece of modern Imagineering, right behind Indiana Jones Adventure and the longer Pirates of the Caribbean as the most compelling rides that Walt Disney World fans  need  to visit California to experience.

Radiator Springs Racers is so good that you’ll probably want to ride more than once. Fortunately, there are a few different ways to approach Radiator Springs Racers to accomplish exactly that–and minimize your time waiting in line.

cars road trip disney land

First, the straightforward rope drop dash.

This is the tried and true method. As noted above, it’s also what most DCA visitors will do. As discussed in our  1-Day Disney California Adventure Itinerary , we favor starting in Avengers Campus instead. Our reasoning is that it’s easier to knock out two headliners early-on by starting on that side of the park.

cars road trip disney land

The fastest option for experiencing Radiator Springs Racers is purchasing an Individual Lightning Lane. While we’re not personally  keen on the pay-per-ride option, we’ve also experienced Radiator Springs Racers (literally) hundreds of times and thus have no sense of urgency.

If we’d never done it before, we’d probably pay to skip the line and do Radiator Springs Racers around sunset, dusk, or late at night. See our  Guide to Genie+ and Lightning Lanes at Disneyland Resort for more info.

cars road trip disney land

Another option–and one we use regularly–is the Single Rider line. If this line is backed up to near the bridge, we recommend getting out of line and coming back later.

Wait times for this fluctuate dramatically, but tend to be lower earlier in the day or towards the very end of the night. They’re usually worst on afternoon, weekends, and any other times when Californians are disproportionately visiting DCA. Locals tend utilize the Single Rider line with much more frequency than tourists.

cars road trip disney land

Our final strategy is getting in line 5 minutes before Disney California Adventure closes for the night.

Ignore the posted wait time, as that’s always inflated to discourage guests from jumping in line for one final ride of the evening. Typically, the line dies down a bit by this point, but the real benefit is that you’ll be “wasting” your time waiting in line after the park is closed, anyway, so it’s not like you’re missing out on valuable park time. Plus, you exit to a mostly-empty Route 66, which is pretty cool.

cars road trip disney land

The one thing you should avoid is getting in the regular standby line during the middle of the day.

Typically, wait times for Radiator Springs Racers are consistently bad between around 11 am and 8 pm. There are a couple of reprieves during this, however. The first is at noon, which is when most people are eating. The second is typically around 4 pm; for this one, you need to get in line  before or right as the posted wait time falls. Otherwise, rope drop or late nights are your best options.

cars road trip disney land

As for Luigi’s Rollicking Roadsters, morning or late at night are the best options for avoiding long waits. This attraction replaced Luigi’s Flying Tires, which was unpopular due to its learning curve. The new version of the attraction is a trackless ride that should remain popular long-term, and see waits of 30+ minutes most of the day.

Wait times are never really all that bad for Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree. Make no mistake, though, these are just minor diversions in comparison to Radiator Springs Racers. Think of them as the piece of orange sometimes garnishing a plate with the delicious burger you might order at a restaurant. Sure, oranges are fine, but no one is ordering the burger thinking, “OH MAN, I CAN’T WAIT TO GET MY ORANGE WEDGE!”

4. It Has Great Decent Food

cars road trip disney land

There are two restaurants in Cars Land: Flo’s V8 Cafe and Cozy Cone Motel (click on each name to read our full reviews of those restaurants). There’s also Filmore’s Taste-In, but it just sells fruits and other nonsense that no one wants. Stupid hippy.

The Cozy Cone Motel has grown on us. The Chili Cone Queso and Bacon Mac & Cheese Cones are both winners, and fun handheld foods you can eat on the go. Beyond that, there are some good desserts here, and there’s usually a good seasonal item or two.

cars road trip disney land

The main draw in Cars Land dining is Flo’s V8 Cafe, which has unfortunately fallen from grace considerably since opening.

Flo’s used to have amazing breakfast options and lots of great comfort food options for lunch and dinner. Currently, it doesn’t serve breakfast at all and the lunch & dinner menu is incredibly scaled back. Our pick right now is Flo’s Famous Fried Chicken, but even that is an (expensive) gamble; we’ve had fantastic fried chicken on occasion–but also dry and underwhelming chicken other times.

cars road trip disney land

With that said, Flo’s V8 Cafe remains one of our go-to spots for late afternoons and evenings in Disney California Adventure.

The restaurant’s “back porch” is a relaxing respite from Disneyland Resort’s crowds, and the spot offers a great view of Radiator Springs Racers and the Cadillac Mountain Range. A lot of people pass this right by or don’t see it at all, but it’s accessible both from the inside and outside of the restaurant. A great spot to grab a cold beer or ice cream (or even bring over some bread pudding from Pacific Wharf Cafe) and enjoy some vehicle and people watching.

3. Nightly “Sh-Boom” Lighting Moment

cars road trip disney land

Your better bet is to pull up the sunset time on your phone, and to position yourself in front of Flo’s V8 Cafe about 5-10 minutes before this time. The lighting typically occurs about 1-5 minutes after sunset. By positioning yourself in front of Flo’s, you’re right in the middle of the action.

This is just a little thing, so don’t go in with overly high expectations, but if you’re like us, it’s one of those magic moments like the Kiss Goodnight at Walt Disney World that might make your eyes leak a little. There are a lot of videos on YouTube of this moment, but we aren’t going to link to any of them, as we think watching it ahead of time sort of ruins it…

2. Cars Land Hidden Details

Disney is quick to tout the “Disney Details” as the difference between it and competitors. In general, this is the general meticulous level of detail in any (good) project that Walt Disney Imagineering completes.

Frankly, this was something that was generally lacking in Disney California Adventure 1.0 , with few exceptions (Golden State being the land that immediately comes to mind). Both new lands, Cars Land and Buena Vista Street, rectified this problem in a big way.

cars road trip disney land

In Cars Land, the Disney Details take two forms: layered organic detail and Easter Eggs. The layered organic details are just the types of thing you’d expect to find in an actual environment like this along Route 66. They give the land depth and make it feel real and lived-in, rather than an artificial theme park environment.

This is my favorite type of detail, as I think it allows you to lose yourself in an environment, and forget you’re in a theme park. Disney’s best work, from New Orleans Square to World Showcase to Tokyo DisneySea , excel in this department. You can add Cars Land to the list of those preceding three examples.

cars road trip disney land

Easter Eggs are a bit different (and more divisive among fans). These are things that do not organically belong in the land, but don’t necessarily detract from it, and give guests familiar with Disney (or whatever is being referenced) a pleasant surprise when they stumble upon them. We have a list of Disneyland Easter Eggs , but that doesn’t cover Cars Land.

These are essentially trivia book and scavenger hunt fodder. A good example of this type of detail is Hidden Mickeys . Cars Land takes this to the next level, with lots of Pixar in-jokes, car culture references, and, of course, Hidden Mickeys.

1. It’s Better at Night

cars road trip disney land

Cars Land looks better at night. Much better. So much better that we highly recommend your first visit to Cars Land being at night, if possible. Obviously this is not going to be possible for many people especially if you’re following our advice about saving time (or if you only have a couple of days at Disneyland Resort), but if you have a longer trip and you can do your first day in Disneyland and Park Hop to Disney California Adventure that night, you won’t regret it.

If you can, here’s exactly what we recommend doing: when you get to the main entrance to Cars Land, instead of turning onto Route 66, keeping walking towards Paradise Pier. On the way, you’ll see a bridge to Pacific Wharf on the left. Take that. Walk all the way through Pacific Wharf, and you’ll come to a bluff that’s part of Cars Land (see the photo above). Walk through that for a real “wow” moment.

cars road trip disney land

Even if that’s not practical, make sure to take the time to visit Cars Land at night. Ornament Valley and the Cadillac Mountain Range in Cars Land are lit beautifully at night, which makes a ride on Radiator Springs Racers at night especially awesome. This is one of the main reasons we recommend riding at night, so the beginning and race sequences of the ride seriously take on a totally different feel at night.

Luigi’s Rollicking Roadsters is also prettier at night, as it’s many strands of popcorn lights plus that beautiful Italian music really make for a peaceful experience. It’s not as improved of an experience at night as Radiator Springs Racers, but the lines are shorter at night anyway, so hey, why not?

cars road trip disney land

Then, there’s the neon lighting. So much glorious neon. If you are like me, you will be enamored with these neon lights like a raccoon who has just found a shiny piece of tinfoil in the trash. Not that the neon lighting is anything like tinfoil that’s been found in trash, but you get the idea.

Thanks to the neon, Cars Land at night truly feels like the “set” from the movie Cars. We know animated movies don’t have sets, but you’ll know exactly what we mean when you step foot in that land at night. Radiator Springs Racers might be the most popular Disney ride anywhere right now, but that land itself at night is the true E-Ticket experience. Do not miss it.

cars road trip disney land

It’s also pretty awesome at night during Christmas at Disneyland Resort . The decorations sort of combine #1 and #2. Some people don’t like them, but we love them.

That covers our tips for visiting Cars Land. By following these you can save yourself a lot of time and potentially improve your experience, but they just scratch the surface of what Cars Land has to offer. The important thing to keep in mind is that Cars Land isn’t just a land to run through to get to Radiator Springs Racers. It’s a place that should be slowed down and savored. If you do, you might be surprised at just how much time you spend in Cars Land!

I adore Carsland. We were there June 2022 and my jaw was on the floor coming around the corner into the land. We’ve been fortunate enough to visit at Xmas and Halloween and it’s Disney Imagineering at its very best. I am so glad we had the chance to experience Luigis flying tires too. I wish every new land *cough* Toy Story land *cough* could be as immersive (and have as much shade)

' src=

We will make a point of being in Cars Land at dusk and be sure to look for Flo’s “back porch”. Thanks for the tips!

' src=

Tom we’re possibly going to DCA in April and I’m wondering if your Cars Land post is current in terms of RSR strategy? Single rider isn’t an option as we have a younger child. Thank you!

' src=

My adult son and I went to Disneyland resort a few weeks ago. We rode Radiator Springs Racers two to four times a day while we were there. We always went the single rider route. Ten minutes was the longest we ever waited in line. We were usually in separate cars, but we were OK with that. One time we were actually in the same car. A couple times we were racing each other. That added to the fun. Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree was another ride we enjoyed. It is a silly little ride, but it was a blast!

' src=

The single rider line is normally the best bet. No fast pass required, and I have seen it actually faster than the fast pass line.

' src=

Dec 1st we camped out in RS to catch the Sh’Boom moment, only to discover that they changed the song for Christmas. Some unmemorable Christmas tune, played at the same volume and on the same system as the regular background music. Underwhelming to say the least. It really could not be called a “moment” Hope to see the real deal someday!

' src=

We are used to WDW magicbands, booking 3 FP when staying on site. So for Disneyland SEpt 2015 – are we only allowed one fast pass at a time? So if we ride RSR, and nab another RSR FP for say 7:00 pm – we won’t be able to get another FP all day? Thanks!

' src=

If it’s like the old DW system you can get another fast pass once the timeframe on your current one starts or 2 hours after you get the first fast pass. Pretty sure that’s how it works at Disneyland.

' src=

Going to DL for the first time in 18 years, and DCA for the first time ever, during the week of July 5th… So thankful for all of your tips and articles! I have to be honest though, the more I read about the busyness of Cars Land, the more nervous I get about how best to navigate the RSR line. Obviously we will be heading there first at rope drop, but it sounds like even that is going to be crazy. If we do wait in the line first thing, is there any hope we will be able to snag FP’s after we ride? Or will they be gone by then?

' src=

Grab a fastpass and go on all the other major rides. Then go back to it. If everyone is there sounds like you can take advantage of this

' src=

Thanks for the great tips. Haven’t been to Disneyland in 16 years and haven’t ever been to the CA park. Will be going May 26-31 of this year, 3 adults and one 4 year old. What are odds of it being busy at this time since it is the 60th anniversary? Hoping the middle of the week will be somewhat quiet.

' src=

I’m going with my family to LA in July as schools don’t allow us to take kids out during term time.

We have a 3 day park hopper which has a magic morning included but i understand this doesn’t work for DCA, only valid for Disneyland. Is this true?

If so we will go to DCA on a non-extra hours day so we don’t have hundreds of disney hotel guests in front of us..

We are staying at Best Western opposite park entrance so should be able to get to the front of the queue (i was thinking about 45mins to 1hr before opening). Do you think this is enough to guarantee getting our RSR fastpass immediately?

I have read that it is a good idea to get a FP for RSR then one for World of Color then ride Soarin while waiting for the RSR FP. Would you agree?

' src=

I don’t think you need quite this much sense of urgency. You’ll be able to get a FastPass for RSR if you’re there at park opening, even if you aren’t at the front of the line.

FastPasses for World of Color last until midday. Ditto Soarin.’

' src=

“There’s also Filmore’s Taste-In, but it just sells fruits and other nonsense that no one wants. Stupid hippy.”

– I think this is the best line I have ever read on your blog. Spectacular!!

' src=

Check rain forecasts. It doesn’t rain much in SoCal but that doesn’t mean never. A shower yesterday that would be laughable by WDW standards knocked out RSR for several hours. Guess it’s because the ride is so exposed to the open.

If you avoid the peak days, you don’t necessarily have to be an early bird if you do Single Rider. I didn’t get to the park until 8:30 and did Single Rider twice plus TSM with around 15 min waits for each. (Nov 30 is a “locals” day so maybe they were scared away by the threat of rain.) After that the rest of the E ticket rides still had short waits.

' src=

Thank you for tip 3 on the Sh-Boom lighting. I was glad we knew to be there in front of Flo’s at sunset, it was really cute. A bunch of people crowded around and everyone got really excited when the music started and were dancing to it. And the best part was we had RSR fastpasses just 10 minutes after that. It was so slow last week that we rode RSR 3 times in 1 day because there were still fastpasses available at 2pm we happened to find after we did It’s tough to be a bug. That was a great surprise!

' src=

What a Great Find! Just about a week before we arrive in Disneyland I stumble upon your blog site. Perfect! I have never been to DL. I’m taking four children ages 6, 7, 9, 10. It’s a reward for their excellent grades in school/combination birthday trip. We are staying at the Disneyland Hotel/Resort Property. We will have access to all rides @ both parks.

1.) What exactly is a fast pass? What does it entitle us to? 2.) Best “Must Not Miss” rides while there?

Thank you for taking the time to keep us informed with this detailed and interesting blog. I have enjoyed reading it. 😉

' src=

The best time to visit Cars Land was during one of the AP Previews in 2012. Lines were reasonable, and it was a once in a lifetime experience to visit BEFORE the land officially opened. I think it was like $75/person to go, but the experience was WELL worth it. It was a brilliant move by the West Coast mouse, which – in general – tends to be more thoughtful in its decisions about the AP experience.

' src=

We are in our 3 days out of 4 in DL right now. We found during the parades at DL is a great time to head over to California and do Toy Story Mania and Cars Land. Same as during the World of Color. And as for Crowd Tracker, the last few days here have had the worst lines I have EVER seen, but Crowd Tracker said it would be a ghost town. One of the DL staff said that coming any time after the first week of January to the end of March is a good bet.

Great tip about the parades being a good time to do attractions.

New details revealed for Cars Route 66 Road Trip at Disneyland Paris

Following a first tease last week, today we’re happy to share more details on Cars Route 66 Road Trip which is set to debut in 2021 at Walt Disney Studios Park.

The long-standing and great collaboration between Disney Imagineers and Pixar continues — together, they’ve designed a family-friendly journey, discovering some of the wacky roadside attractions along the famous Route 66 highway.

cars road trip disney land

The attraction’s new boarding station, inspired by mid-century modern architecture, fittingly offers several nods to the automotive world. As your gateway to all the wonders awaiting you on Route 66, guests will enter the station through a tourist booth complete with maps, postcards and other decorative items (design details that Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering are known for and guests love – see examples below). The loading station, which stands halfway through construction, is actually the first building constructed outside the current perimeter of Walt Disney Studios Park, and once completed will be accessible to visitors via a new road extending from Toy Story Playland. Cars Route 66 Road Trip represents the first step in the expansion of Walt Disney Studios Park.

Disneyland Road Trips

Disneyland Road Trip

Depending on where you’re coming from, your drive might take you a few hours or a couple days. Either way, it’s a big trip with excited kids in tow who are anxious and ready to get to Disneyland Resort. Ready to get to Walt Disney World in the meantime? Get your Walt Disney World quote here .

I teamed up with Maverik: Adventure’s First Stop  to get you from point A to B in a fun, fast (and safe!) way for this road trip adventure.

Table of Contents

Road Trip to Disneyland Car Prep

Before you hit the road remember these essentials:

  • 2019 and 2020, get ready for some delays while passing through Arizona from Utah and into Las Vegas .
  • Get your car serviced and oil changed. I like to go to Grease Monkey because they have free fountain drinks and popcorn which makes this errand less stressful when I bring the kids.
  • Replace windshield wipers if needed. There’s often summer rain storms in the California and Nevada desert with heavy, quick rainfall. I’ve been stuck driving through one with old wipers and it’s not pleasant.

Utah to Disneyland

  • Restock or purchase a new first aid kit .
  • Paper map. Yes, a legit paper folded map of Los Angeles, Orange County and the vicinity . It’s much better to have this on hand and not need it then get lost with no cell service or end up in a crazy neighborhood courtesy of Waze.

Packing the car is a major event when going on a family road trip. I like to have almost everything packed up the day before so I know it all fits just the way I want it. I also like to have a full tank of gas the night before, filling up at my local Maverik . I love that you can see prices right from their website.

Disneyland Road Trip Activities

Beyond the basics of clothing, toiletries and more, I set up each kids’ seat  and it always includes things to keep them busy and comfortable.

Disneyland Car Toontown

  • Small travel pillow and blanket . In the summer each kid uses a beach towel instead of a blanket, because we know we’ll be using those in California too!
  • Charged tablets and earbuds or headphones. We have the Kindle fire for each kid , along with soft padded headphones made for little ears .
  • Snack bags. I used to just keep a giant bag of snacks in the front seat and pass them out as needed, but now I get a gallon zip lock bag and fill each with snacks and candy. There’s enough for one each hour but my kids decide when and what to eat. They usually have plenty to go around.

Disneyland snacks

  • Water bottles are a must for any traveling we do. I have one kid who only wants “home water” from our fridge, so if I put it in a water bottle it’s now just as good as “home water.” My favorite water bottle recently is my Bubba stainless steel with a straw . It keeps everything cold and I must have straws.
  • Books checked out from the library. All library books stay in the car because we never want to worry about leaving them behind in a hotel room.
  • Coloring book, doodle books and colored pencils—no crayons, those just melt! My son got this Marvel doodle book for his birthday and it’s perfect keeping kids busy on long drives.
  • “Guess Who Said It” game featuring popular Disney movie quotes. You can print it out for your road trip here.
  • Five Disney road trip movies the kids can watch during the drive
  • No-prep Disney Road Trip Games

Disneyland Drive Pitstops

Let’s face it, you’ve gotta stop somewhere along the route. For my family, it’s usually for potty breaks and filling up the tank. Let’s be real—it’s my potty breaks and filling up my soda stash.

I always stop at Maverik’s along the route to Disneyland. We legit plan our stops out to go to Maverik’s because we know each and every one will be exactly what we expect. Clean, convenient, and packed full of everything we need (or don’t need!). Many of the state-owned rest stops are often closed, dirty and inconvenient.

Maverik drinks

And if we need a break to run around for a minute, there’s usually a grassy area and picnic tables on Maverik property to relax and stretch.

Maverik picnic

It’s a different experience for sure, but if you want to venture off the route, there’s some quick and free entertainment nearby.

We tend to drive right through Vegas, but a few years ago we went on a mini-vacay and had a blast. One tip: if you don’t want to get handed any fliers on the strip, try holding your child’s hand or carrying them. Street solicitors would still hand out that garbage while walking next to our kids, but not if we were physically touching (shielding?) our littles.

Here’s what you can do for a quick break:

  • Wildlife Habitat with flamingos at the Flamingo hotel
  • M&Ms World , cute products, displays and a little movie if you go at the right time
  • Coke Store , try the flavors from around the world if you have a strong stomach
  • Bellagio free botanical gardens
  • See sharks at Mandalay Bay

What else do you like to do in Las Vegas or nearby with your kids for a quick pitstop on the way to Disneyland? See what our readers have added to the list on our Facebook page.

Road Trip Overnight Hotels

We’re kinda backing up here, location wise. . . sometimes your best option to getting there “faster” is to take a break. Everyone is more refreshed and patient when they don’t have to spend endless hours in the car.

My favorite place to stay overnight is Holiday Inn in Mesquite, Nevada which is just over the Arizona boarder. I usually drive as the solo driver and one time, the kids were just giving me too much grief to go on.

I booked this hotel last minute and was so glad I did! Walmart is right next door, so we picked up dinner, checked in and headed to their amazing pool. They have plenty of outdoor seating for dinner, even a grill to cook on. We relaxed in the pool and played at the splash pad. And those in-the-pool loungers are everything!

In the morning, breakfast was included and we were refreshed and on our way. I love that it was away from casinos and smokey lobbies, plus the pool was just incredible.

Read This Before You Go

If you’re coming in from out of state, chances are you’ll run into the California Agriculture Inspection. Don’t let this scare you. It’s no big deal. Sometimes you have to stop and talk to a state employee, other times you simply slow down and they wave you through.

Disneyland Castle

California Agriculture Inspection

So what’s this all about then? This stop in Yermo, California is unavoidable if you’re driving from Las Vegas to Disneyland. They are looking “ to make sure they are free from exotic invasive species that may be hitchhiking with them. Although the primary focus is on plant materials (i.e., fruits, vegetables, nursery stock, hay, firewood, etc.), other items are also frequently inspected.”

I’ve driven this route hundreds of time. I’ve been stopped maybe a handful of times. Each time they ask me if I have any fruits or vegetables and if I have an apple or two, I tell them and I am on my way.

What else should you know about getting through the inspection quickly? Be prepared by reading through these FAQs.

Skip the Sunday Drive

Consider this your warning. If you plan to be anywhere between Vegas and SoCal on a Sunday, be prepared for massive delays and traffic. Lots of people from LA and beyond make a weekend trip to Las Vegas. Sunday is the worst time make your drive from Utah to Disneyland.

When You Arrive at Disneyland

Once you get to Anaheim, be sure to print out your Disneyland Plan , we have itineraries for all types of groups and families. Now get ready to arrive in time for “rope drop” and open Disneyland Resort!

Do you make the drive to Disneyland often—tell us what we should add to our list!
