Land program promotions are per person for guests 1 and 2 for one pre- or post-cruise program only, subject to terms .

Explore prominent landmarks and extraordinary cities that define Spain, many of them World Heritage sites, an experience that will leave you with a deeper historical and cultural perspective of the country.

NOTE: this program ends in Madrid therefore departing flights need to be booked out of the Madrid International Airport. This tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties or for those who use a wheelchair, walker or scooter due to the amount of walking, many steps and cobbled surfaces.

After disembarking the cruise ship in Barcelona, you will enjoy a leisurely and immensely scenic drive to the Poblet Monastery. A 12th-century church stands at the center of this sacred World Heritage site, which features a fortified royal residence. While touring, you will learn about the monks’ lifestyle in the Middle Ages and the mountainous route that connects this Cisterian monastery to two others.

Continuing on to the nearby medieval village of Montblanc, you can expect to see its Gothic churches, the royal palace and the city’s 14th-century stone walls, more than half of which still exist. Free time follows, during which you can explore further. The centrally located Plaza Mayor is a great starting point for shopping and people-watching.

Afterwards, you will settle in for a relaxing drive to Zaragoza, the capital of the province that lies on the Ebro River. Upon arriving, you will check into the NH Collection Gran Hotel de Zaragoza or similar, where the remainder of the day will be at your leisure with dinner on your own.

After breakfast at the hotel, you will spend the next two hours or so exploring Zaragoza, especially the Old Town. Its star attraction is the multi-domed Basilica of Pilar, an important pilgrimage site. According to local legend, the Virgin Mary gave Saint James a pillar made of jasper here and instructed him to build a church on the site. This last version of El Pilar, as it’s known locally, was constructed beginning in the late 17th century.

You will next visit the ancient town of Medinaceli, which in Arabic and means “City on the Hill.” The Romans founded the city and structures from that time still remain, the most famous being a stone arch built in the 2nd century. Other highlights include a 17th-century palace and a Gothic church built even earlier.

Following lunch, you will settle in for a relaxing drive to Madrid, where you will check into the Eurostar Madrid Tower or similar hotel. The remainder of the day will be at your leisure with dinner on your own.

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for Toledo, a city so architecturally rich that Spain has declared it a national monument. UNESCO agreed and designated the historic center a World Heritage site, in part because three religions existed harmoniously here—Christianity, Islam and Judaism.

As you walk through this extraordinary city on the Tagus River, you will get a genuine feel for what life was like here in the Middle Ages. The historic city center is that atmospheric. The Toledo Cathedral is particularly impressive, as it is considered one of Europe’s greatest Gothic buildings. Built over nearly three centuries, starting in 1226, the cathedral contains a spectacular high altar and two painting by El Greco, the famed painter that lived in Toledo.

Another spectacular El Greco painting hangs in the Church of Santo Tomé, while the 13th-century Synagogue of Saint Mary the White is known for its Mudejar-style horseshoe arches. Be sure to notice these elaborately decorated arches as you browse the interior.

Lunch follows, after which you will proceed to Madrid. As an introduction to Spain’s vibrant capital, you will drive past key landmarks before starting an enlightening walking tour in Plaza Mayor. This grand arcaded square in the heart of the city offers wonderful options for shopping and dining nearby, as you may discover during free time.

By late afternoon, you will return to the hotel, where you will spend the evening with dinner on your own.

After breakfast at the hotel, you will drive to Segovia, a World Heritage site perhaps best known for its aqueduct that was probably constructed during the reign of Roman emperor Trajan. Until about 100 years ago, the aqueduct still carried water from the Frio River into Segovia 10 miles away.

The Alcazar is another landmark that is impossible to miss. Construction began in the 12th century and its fabulous fairy-tale style supposedly inspired the design of the Walt Disney castle in part. You will also spend time in Segovia’s walled upper town, whose cathedral is the last Gothic one built in Spain. It stands where Isabella I was proclaimed the Queen of Castile in 1474.

Following lunch in Segovia, you will drive to the 16th-century Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial on the outskirts of Madrid. It too is a World Heritage site and celebrated for its austere appearance, which influenced Spanish architecture for the next half century or so. As you wander through the interior, the guide will describe the building’s illustrious history, including how King Philip II conceived El Escorial as a funerary monument for his father.

After visiting, you will return to the hotel in Madrid, where you will spend the evening with dinner on your own.

Following breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will transfer to the Madrid International Airport based on the departure of your flight. Luggage can be stored at the hotel for guests with flights that depart late in the day.

  • Golf Net The glorious ocean vistas you’ll admire every day won’t necessarily have you thinking of golf course fairways, but if you find yourself wishing you could be practicing your fairway swing, head to our Golf Net. All the clubs and golf balls you need are available. Who knows? Maybe you’ll return home from your voyage with a few kinks worked out of your golf swing...
  • INFINITY-EDGE PLUNGE POOL Surrounded by an inviting teak-deck terrace filled with plush, partially covered lounge chairs, our refreshing Infinity-Edge Plunge Pool is a perfect place to soak and take in dramatic views, as the pool contours to the stern of the ship.
  • Paddle Tennis Court One look at our Paddle Tennis Court and you’ll know it’s a place of serious competition. All the equipment you need is nearby, the court is completely screened and the surface is immaculate. Whether you find yourself in a tense match or something more leisurely, you and your fellow players will be enjoying fresh ocean air and fantastic views from high atop your ship.
  • Pool Bar When you envision the type of activity you’re only likely to do while on vacation, sipping a frozen drink at a pool bar onboard a glorious cruise ship is probably near the top of the list. You can tick that box at our Pool Bar, where you and new friends can enjoy leisurely conversation over cocktails and frozen drinks in a delightfully relaxed atmosphere.
  • Pool Deck If it’s a day by the pool you desire, our Pool Deck is one of the most elegant at sea. Outfitted in teak accents, it features a lavish pool and two whirlpools in a blissful setting. Lounge the day away under the warm sun or read a book in a shady nook with an amiable and dedicated crew on-hand to bring refreshing beverages and plush towels.
  • Putting Green While the Golf Net is meant to help you improve your fairway swing, our Putting Greens are less about self-improvement than group fun as your ship travels from one destination to another. A popular pastime is gathering friends after an afternoon cocktail and heading to the top deck of Seven Seas Splendor® for a spirited competition as twilight approaches and a delicious dinner in one of our stellar restaurants looms.
  • Shuffleboard This isn’t the sleepy version of shuffleboard. From high atop Seven Seas Splendor®, you’ll be enchanted by ocean vistas stretching horizon to horizon as you engage in a game that dates back to 15th-century England. All equipment is well-maintained and available for use – all you have to do is bring a team, or perhaps join one in need of a player.
  • Sports Deck You may visit our Sports Deck after a relaxing visit to Serene Spa & Wellness™ to jog a few laps around our track or practice your fairway golf swing. Then again, you could head up to Deck 12 after an afternoon cocktail to take on new friends in games of bocce ball or paddle tennis. Whatever you do, you’ll enjoy the freshest ocean air and vistas you’ll never forget.
  • The Study In an atmosphere that’s reminiscent of a personal library in an elegant, stately home, Regent Suite guests may gather in The Study to privately dine on meals from the adjacent Chartreuse and Prime 7 restaurants. Such an exclusive opportunity further establishes the Regent Suite on Seven Seas Splendor® as the pre-eminent luxury accommodation on the high seas.
  • The Casino Inspired by the iconic gaming halls of Las Vegas and Monte Carlo, our Casino is an elegant and exciting destination unto itself. Whether you’re a player or spectator, the excitement is contagious, the drinks are delightful and the staff is welcoming. Challenge friends to poker and blackjack or cheer on your number at the roulette wheel. Find your way to our Casino through stylish glass doors – and may Lady Luck treat you kindly.

This guest favorite is many things: a hallmark, a much-loved hideaway, an elegant gathering place for good conversation and bonhomie. Aboard  Seven Seas Splendor ® it’s also a modern space with oversize leather armchairs and signature works of art placed tastefully throughout. Stop in and test the conversational waters over a fine cigar or fine cognac, both available for purchase. As you would guess, smoking is permitted here.

  • Constellation Theater Plush seating and pleasing sightlines make every seat a great seat in our state-of-the-art show hall. Stretching two decks, the Constellation Theater boasts lavishly staged, high-energy shows created and produced by our own team of Broadway choreographers and directors. Sit in comfort or get up and dance to stories brimming with romance, intrigue, singalongs – even a tear-jerking tribute to the days of disco.
  • Meridian Lounge Elegantly appointed and comfortably furnished, this sleek lounge is a showstopper, with an expansive bar serving your favorite cocktails. Warm lighting and sophisticated ambiance are integral to its charm, but its vibe is the intangible draw. Meet for a drink before a show at the Constellation Theater or to continue your unforgettable evening with performances by resident musicians afterwards.
  • Observation Lounge Our fleet abounds with spectacular suites, restaurants, and lounges, but the Observation Lounge on Seven Seas Splendor® is truly magical. It offers staggering views as the ship enters and leaves ports of call, but its interior is lush with upholsteries inspired by the fluidity of flower petals, giving it the feel of a sunlit English garden. At night, a whimsical chandelier and hand-painted glass screens work in tandem with a cocktail pianist to perfect the scene.
  • Splendor Lounge A magical place to laugh and unwind. Enjoy signature cocktails in a space designed to arouse the senses, from soulful sounds floating on ocean breezes to plush chairs cradling you in comfort to a lounge so spectacularly designed it will dazzle from every angle. What better way to prepare for a delicious dinner than chatting with fellow guests while musicians perform on an intimate stage beneath a grand proscenium?
  • Fitness Center Serene Spa & Wellness™ fitness experts lead popular exercise classes, such as Pilates, yoga and meditation and are on hand to offer advice and demonstrate the use of fitness equipment. Equipment includes spinning bikes, dumbbells, treadmills, Technogym Strength Machines, workout mats and step benches. One-on-one training can be arranged with a fitness instructor. Guests under the age of 16 are not permitted in the Fitness Center.
  • Jogging Track & Recreation Whether you prefer to start your day with a brisk jog or wait until later and get in an afternoon walk, our Track is a popular destination for those who’ve developed active lifestyles back on dry land. Onboard Seven Seas Splendor® it’s an outstanding place to get your heart pumping while enjoying unforgettable ocean vistas.
  • Serene Spa & Wellness Serene Spa & Wellness™ is a globally inspired, tranquil haven of health, beauty and wellness, offering restorative treatments and activities to soothe both the body and mind. Strengthen and elevate as you engage with a variety of treatments and services designed to enhance your whole being, from massages, and body wraps to facials, manicures and pedicures and exclusive treatments curated especially for Regent Seven Seas Cruises®.
  • Boutiques It could be a shimmering piece of evening wear you can’t wait to show off at dinner or something perfect for someone back home. Our shops sparkle with carefully picked selections of designer garments, fashionable accessories and smart gifts. Stop in and be enticed by a wide range of items – from upscale handbags to exclusive fragrances to fine jewelry – in an unhurried setting.
  • Business Center If you prefer to travel without a laptop, our staffed Business Center offers desktop computers that allow you to access your emails and browse the Internet. Printer access is available for a nominal fee. Seven Seas Splendor® provides WiFi access throughout the ship, allowing you to connect to the Internet with whatever device you’ve brought on board.
  • Reception Have your every wish, whim and want fulfilled at our welcoming Reception Desk. Our office staff is available 24 hours a day to answer your questions – the ship's Concierge may be contacted at the Reception Desk as well. He or she is eager to provide you with general assistance and help you make the most of your voyage.

All guests must ensure that their travel documents are valid, including having enough blank passport pages required to facilitate passport stamping and visas on arrival, where applicable.

Cruises to Monaco (Monte Carlo)

hillsdale college cruise monte carlo to barcelona

About Cruising to Monaco (Monte Carlo)

Arriving by ship into the Monte Carlo harbor is amazing to experience on a cruise to France . If your docking time is before dawn, you'll see the lights of the principality twinkling throughout the mountains that surround the harbor and the beautifully lit Grand Casino at center stage. If you arrive during daylight hours, you are faced with the sight of one magnificent yacht after another vying for space in the little harbor.

Monaco is a self-governed sovereign nation under the protection of France. It has been ruled by the Grimaldi family for the past 700 years (with a slight diversion during the French Revolution), and its 1918 treaty with France decreed that if the prince -- any Grimaldi prince -- failed to produce a son, the territory would be ceded back to France upon his death. This was changed in 2002. If Albert II, the current prince, fails to produce a male heir, the throne will be passed to his sister Caroline.

Monaco, which comprises a miniscule 485 acres in total, and is Europe's smallest state after the Vatican, is barely west of the Italian border and surrounded by France on all sides except for the 2.5 miles of coastline. If you are looking at Monaco from your ship in the harbor, you can't tell where the principality ends and France begins. (Hint: Somewhere around the Middle Corniche.) As tiny as it is, it contains five sectors, of which Monte Carlo is the best-known. The principality, which is home to the most millionaires per capita than anywhere else in the world, has no natural resources; its national economy is based on tourism and banking.

The two go hand in hand in this idyllic slice of the Cote d'Azur. The wealthy Europeans who do their banking here expect -- no, demand -- the best, and cost be damned. This makes it harder for workaday folks to enjoy a stay (rooms go for an average of $700 a night in a nice hotel), but coming in on a cruise ship for the day gives one a sense of James Bond cool.

If you're lucky enough to be in Monaco during the third week in May, you can actually see part of the Grand Prix Formula One race from the comfort of your cruise ship. We were surprised to see that the track is actually in the middle of the city and goes under an overpass within direct view of the cruise ship dock.

However, whenever you are fortunate enough to visit Monaco and the dazzling district of Monte Carlo, you'll find plenty to do. In fact, these 485 acres offer so much, you'll need to come back to explore again.

Landmarks such as the Monte Carlo Casino and Prince's Palace are all within walking distance

The city is expensive, and its posh, affluent vibe might come across as pretentious to some

You don't need to book a shore excursion to see most of the city's major attractions

There's very little at the pier itself. When you get to the gate at the end of the pier, you can walk along the seawall adjacent to the yacht harbor to get into the center of Monte Carlo (about a mile from the ship) or take an elevator and stairs (about 500 yards) to Old Town (Monaco-Ville) where you will find the Palais Princier and the Oceanographic Museum.

Good to Know?

Streets are steep, nearly vertical in some places. However, several elevators and "travelators" are available to help negotiate the inclines in the following areas:

Between the Place des Moulins and the beaches; between the Princess Grace Hospital Centre and the Exotic Garden; between the harbor and the Avenue de la Costa; between the Place St. Devote and the area of Moneghetti; between the terraces of the casino, the Congress Centre Auditorium and the Boulevard Louis II; between the Avenue des Citronniers and the Avenue Grande-Bretagne between the highway and the Larvotto Boulevard.

Getting Around?

Taxis come to the end of the pier (just outside the gates) until approximately 6 p.m. Buses stop at 7 p.m. near the dock but run until 9 p.m. in the principality -- except on weekends when they have a less frequent schedule. The bus system is extensive, but it's quite a long walk to the bus stop from the ship docks. The Monaco bus company, CAM , operates a network of six routes that cover all the main attractions. There are 142 bus stops around the principality, so you never have to walk far to find one. The conductor onboard the bus sells tickets, but you need exact change. Fares are shown at the bus stops.

If you are staying overnight, or have plenty of time in port, the number 100 Rapide Cote D'Azur (RCA) connects Monaco with the chic French Riviera resort of Nice. The journey takes around half an hour and follows a very scenic route along the coast. Halfway between Monaco and Nice is the pretty medieval village of Eze, which can be reached on buses operated by Ligne d'Azur.

A fun way to cross the harbor is on the electric water bus, which runs between the cruise terminal and the city center, near the casino, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

If you're physically fit, you can walk around the principality, but be warned: It's steep, almost everywhere. However, the good news is that you never need worry about safety because Monaco has one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

Currency & Best Way to Get Money?

The currency in Monaco is the euro. There is a bank (and ATM) on nearly every corner. Traveler's checks must be exchanged at banks or at one of the two bureaux de change -- Compagnie Monegasque de Change (Parking des Pecheurs, Avenue de la Quarantaine) or Monafinances (17 Avenue des Spelugues) -- because most businesses will not accept them. Banks are generally open from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., with some staying open during lunchtime. Credit Foncier de Monaco, located near the casino, is open daily -- including Sundays and holidays -- from noon to 11 p.m.

The official language of Monaco is French, but because of the international nature of the place, and its proximity to Italy, Italian, English and Spanish are all widely spoken and understood. There is also a Monegasque dialect, derived from Italian and spoken by around 20 percent of the population.

Where You're Docked?

Opened in 2003, the modern cruise ship pier (Nouvelle Digue de Monaco) is located next to the yacht harbor in the Port of Monaco (Hercules Port), just east of the Palais Princier, the home of Prince Albert, and just below the sector of Monte Carlo. Although the 352 meter dock can accommodate several ships in port, there will be the odd occasion where it's booked up and tenders will need to be utilized.
