Cateel, Davao Oriental: The Glorious Cascades of Aliwagwag Falls – the Tallest in the Philippines!

An unfinished road through Compostela Valley to Cateel, Davao Oriental has cut the eight-hour travel time to the sleepy Pacific town by three hours. Thereby making its prime attraction, the Aliwagwag Falls, easier to visit. Composed of 84 cascades that reach a total height of 1,110 feet, the glorious waterfalls of Brgy. Aliwagwag is considered by many to be the tallest in the Philippines. For comparison, the popular single-tiered Maria Cristina Falls in Iligan City is only 320 feet tall – that’s less than a third of the total height of Aliwagwag Falls!

Half an hour’s ride from the main town will take you to the Aliwagwag Bridge, overlooking the massive cascades. This is the best vantage point from which to take photographs, though it would take some time for you to hike down the river and up a boulder to perfectly position yourself. The tricycle driver enthusiastically obliged to assist in taking pictures.  The area is surrounded by some of densest jungles I’ve seen in the Philippines, home to endemic wildlife. However, these forests are being threatened by illegal logging and gold mining; and wild animals are being illegally captured for food or pet trade. Along the way to the falls, children sell endemic Colasisis or Philippine Hanging Parrots ( Loriculus philippensis ) as pets.  The majestic multi-tiered waterfalls makes for an amazing, lesser known stopover on a trip along Mindanao’s Pacific coast, before venturing farther north to the more popular Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig City and Enchanted River in Hinatuan, both in Surigao del Sur.

HOW TO GET THERE: From Davao City, Mallen and Lyra Express (5 hours, PHP 250) buses travel to Cateel via the unfinished Compostela-Cateel road. Both bus lines can be found in a parking lot behind the Davao Ecoland Terminal. Schedules are as follows: Mallen departs at 4:00 AM and 5:00 PM daily, while Lyra Express departs at 3 PM daily.  Bachelor Express at the Ecoland Terminal has more frequent trips, but they pass the longer route via Mati, Davao Oriental, which can take up to 8 hours.  On the Compostela-Cateel route, you will pass by Aliwagwag Falls, some 25 km before the town center. You can alight here during daytime, though you might have trouble finding a ride to town after. Alternatively, from Cateel town, you can negotiate with a tricycle driver to take you back to Aliwagwag Falls (PHP 200 return, 30 minutes each way). WHERE TO STAY: If you need to spend the night in Cateel, stay at Oar Inn (Mobile: +63921 2343730 at Brgy. Poblacion along the national highway, where single rooms are at PHP 250.

Road to recovery: A ‘Biyahe ni Drew’ itinerary in Cateel, Davao Oriental

On December 4, 2012, the day when Typhoon Pablo hit the easternmost part of Mindanao, Cateel was one of the most affected towns in Davao Oriental. Pablo’s dreadful winds, which was classified as super typhoon category 5, destroyed a huge part of the town. Due to the victims’ dire need to survive, some of them resorted to looting of NFA rice from a warehouse in Cateel.

Upon seeing what was left to them -- balding rainforest and damaged waterfalls like Aliwag-wag, Mahan-ob and Tres Marias -- locals persevered to bring back what used to be their home town’s pride. And instead of losing hope over the situation, little by little, Cateelenos started building new homes and planting new trees that would help regain their town’s glory.

Olan Emboscado shared that the aftermath of the typhoon, gave each one of them such motivation to help each other and their town as well. And just like the story of Mang Exequias, a farmer turned tricycle driver, found an inspiration from what he had experienced during the typhoon.

He could still remember how catastrophe swept his entire house. “Nawalan na kami ng pag-asa, pero sa awa ng Panginoon, nakaahon din at lumakas ang aming loob na maghanapbuhay.” With the help from NGOs, a new house was built to protect him and his family.

How to get here

After four years, Cateel proved that they could still bring back their town’s priceless beauty. If you want to witness how this town is endowed with abundant gifts from above, you may take a plane ride from Manila to Davao City.

Once you get there, you still have to take a bus or van going to the towns of Boston and Cateel. From Davao City, it will take you six hours before you reach your destination.

If you want to take a van, fares range from P300 to P400.

Taking a bus is way cheaper for it will only cost you an amount of P150 to P200.

Aliwag-wag Falls

The Aliwagwag falls -- the longest cascading waterfalls in the Philippines -- was one of the attractions that was destroyed by the typhoon. The strong winds uprooted century-old trees surrounding the waterfalls while some of the trunks and branches lie strewn all over its pool.

After the Typhoon Pablo, a lot of people showed concern over the Aliwagwag’s state. Through the #HelpCateel, a movement headed by Olan Emboscado himself, their group has done tree planting activities and clean-up drive in various communities in Cateel.

Now, the falls is gradually recovering.

Situated just along the main highway, you will already hear the soothing sound of burbling waters coming from the Aliwagwag falls. Moreover, the falls is also a series of 136 cascading waterfalls over rock formations in various shapes and heights. It’s towering height of 1,100 feet above sea level is just so amazing that Cateelenos even called it as the”Stairway to Heaven.”

The Aliwagwag falls is now going back to its natural beauty. Aside from its breathtaking view, it also offers exciting activities like the 680-meters zipline hovering above the ground, giving you an overview of the Cateel rainforest and the falls as backdrop.

If you want to get a closer look of the Aliwagwag falls, you may try climbing this 45 meters monkey bridge.

Biyahero tip! The monkey bridge is too slippery so don’t forget to have your trekking shoes or sandals on!

What to eat

Situated in front of the Pacific Ocean, Cateel is also rich with huge lobsters or locally known as “banagan.” These lobsters are also the source of income of most Cateelenos. To complete your Cateel travel experience, don’t forget their hometown’s special delicacy -- the sweet and chili banagan.

Biyahero tip!  In Manila, a kilo of lobsters will cost you thousands of peso. But here in Cateel, their lobsters usually range from P600 to P700.

Mahan-ob Falls

Along with Aliwag-wag, Mahan-ob was also one of the towns that was badly hit by the raging typhoon. Those lush green trees and bushes that used to conceal the entire falls were smashed, uprooted and damaged. Now, the Mahan-ob falls can easily be seen, enticing every tourist and local to experience its pristine waters.

Biyaheros need to do some five to ten-minute trek before witnessing Mahan-ob’s multi-tiered waterfall that is varying in height and width.

Unlike other waterfalls in Cateel, Mahan-ob is different because it doesn’t have a natural pool where tourists can take a plunge. To appreciate and enjoy your stay at Mahan-ob falls, it is better to bathe under its strong cascading fresh waters.

Tres Marias

A whole day is not enough to explore all the tourist attractions the town of Cateel has to offer. In fact, the Muntanao Eco Park is also home to another waterfalls called Tres Marias Falls. It has three tiers and a blue-green natural pool. Just near the Muntanao Ecopark, there is also a cave good for spelunking.

“Those are the factors that want you to experience any type of waterfalls. ‘Yun ‘yung hindi mo makakalimutan. It will be there in your memory. Beautiful!,” Drew shared upon seeing three of the best waterfalls in Cateel.

Indeed, all the wonderful sites in Cateel were not spared from typhoon Pablo. And according to Olan Emboscado, “Lahat ng mayroon kami rito, sinira ng typhoon Pablo. Ang mga simbahan, ang mga puno at maging ang mga gusali sa paligid, lahat ‘yan ay nawala.”

You might wonder how Cateleenos able to mend the damages brought by the catastrophe?

“Tatlong taon matapos ang delubyo na ‘yun, makikita n’yo na bumangon kami at patuloy kaming nakaahon. Kasi kaming Cateleenos, we don’t dwell on the negative. Marunong kaming mag-move forward,” Olan ended. -- Tyne Villan/ BMS, GMA Public Affairs

Almost two decades later, many people visiting the province are still not aware that in the town of Caraga, about an hour’s drive north of the capital, the sun rises first in the Philippines at Pusan Point.

8. Caraga Church

also called San Salvador del Mundo Church (Christ, the Saviour of the World), is one of the main attractions in the municipality of Caraga in Davao Oriental because of its historical reputation and significance not only for the province and the island of Mindanao but for the whole country, as San Salvador del Mundo Church is where Christianity began in the eastern part of the Philippines.

It is located at the heart of Poblacion of Caraga, about 229 feet from the edge of a high point overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It is the oldest stone church and one of Mindanao’s remaining Spanish colonial-era churches. It was built in 1884 by a priest named Fr. Pablo Pastells when the Jesuits took custody of the spiritual administration of the town in 1871 from the Augustinian Recollects.

The Caraga Church is a humble structure made of coral and limestone blocks positioned on top of each other, while the upper half is built mainly of wood. Upon the church’s main door is a writing that bears a symbol of Christ which dates to the structure’s foundation in 1884. 9. Curtain Falls

The Curtain Falls originates its name after the formation of the waterfalls itself. The cool dropping waters come from the river above and the bulky flat rock causes it to drift in a curtain-like form. Curtain Falls is thought to be the broadest curtain falls in the whole Davao Region. The waters fall from a distance of around 7 meters in height and its width is maybe around 15 to 18 meters.

It falls into a shallow basin of water underneath where you may take a dip or a plunge. You can climb on the rocks near the waterfall if you want to reach the spot overhead. Once you’re on top, you can see another fall from view. These are quite far from the Curtain Falls and will take nearly an hour to trek. The place is kept in its natural form and is not that truly developed even if it is already open for tourism. You don’t have to pay the entrance fee. Makeshift cottages are made accessible by the locals for rent.

CARAGA | DAVAO ORIENTAL: 2-Day Travel Guide, Budget + Itinerary

Caraga is one of the towns found in the eastern-most Davao Region, in the province of Davao Oriental . It is bordered by the towns of Baganga and Manay. It may not be as famous as its neighboring towns but it certainly won’t come last when it comes to what it has to offer its visitors. The town is surrounded by a long stretch of beautiful white sand beaches, gorgeous rivers snaking through its valleys, and several stunning waterfalls scattered around its mountains. If you’re wondering how you can go about exploring this little town then you would find this Caraga Travel Guide helpful.

My 2-Day Caraga Sample Itinerary

I’ve been meaning to explore all the towns in my mother’s home province, Davao Oriental but the pandemic got in the way. So when the situation finally cleared and local travel is no longer very restrictive, I went all out for it. I flew back to Mindanao from Manila and decided to stay there for a while to explore its hidden treasures.  My quest may have started with several roadblocks along the way, with the weather frequently spoiling the fun but I learned to live with it and cherish every moment. So read on as I let you in on a wonderful trip to Caraga, a town you probably didn’t hear of before.

Day 1 – Sunrise, Dramatic Waves, Waterfalls, & a Little History

What’s best to do in a place where the first light of sunrise hit first than anywhere else in the country? Yup! It’s to witness the sunrise. In Caraga, this should be done nowhere else than in Pusan Point . As the easternmost point of the country, Pusan Point provides an unobstructed view of the rising sun above the endless sea horizon. Coupled with dramatic waves splashing into giant karsts, the scene couldn’t be any more enviable.

After kickstarting your day with a wonderful sunrise, you can continue the fun in Prinsesa Falls. This waterfall is just nearby Pusan Point and would make an ideal side trip if you’re into going on a refreshing dip. It’s also within a resort with pools and picnic huts so you would do best to bring with you food and drinks so you won’t need to go back to the town center.

You can go back downtown during the odd hours of the afternoon from 3 PM – 4 PM to check on the historical San Salvador Del Mundo Church which is one of the oldest churches in Mindanao. It’s also interesting to see some of the old houses and buildings within the town proper as they emanate some kind of mystery having survived a disastrous typhoon and years of wear and tear. Before sundown, you can go to Bango Beach to rest and spend the night.

Day 2 – Bumpy Rides, Scenic Views & White Sand Beaches

Caraga has 5-6 known waterfalls under its sleeve but the one that captivated me the most was Kapuka Falls . I’d say this is a must when you visit Caraga. A trip to this waterfall will make you awwing on scenic rides, gasping for air on the bumpy and treacherous roads, and enchanted upon finally seeing its silky water falling into its pool of refreshing gatorade waters.

After you’ve had enough of Kapuka Falls , you can continue the fun in Ugwad Falls which is just another 30 minutes of river trek away, or go to Villa Mabiga for that much sought-after beach fix. This resort accepts guests on a day tour by reservation and is a perfect place to cap off your 2-Day Caraga Tour.

Optional: You can make a stop in Caraga Bridge for a quick photo ops

How To Go To Kapuka Falls

From Manila – Fly to Davao. Once there, ride a cab to Ecoland Terminal. Hop on a Bachelor bus going to Cateel and alight in Caraga town proper (P500/way | 5Hrs).

Useful Travel Tips To Caraga

Waterfalls are best visited during the rainy season which for Davao Oriental is during the months of November to June.

  • Exercise caution when visiting during days with heavy rainfall. Going to the falls requires crossing a river and this may be dangerous as unexpected flooding may occur.
  • The months of February to April have the most rains so make sure to account for the weather when planning your visit.
  • BE EXTRA CAREFUL if you’re driving your own vehicle. The roads in and leading to this town are filled with many blind curves and dangerous turns.
  • Mobile internet is very slow in some areas within the town for all networks.
  • Bring enough cash since ATMs are hard to find and are most of the time unavailable/offline in the area.
  • Bus trips to and from this town are only available twice per day. One in the morning and one during the evening.
  • If you wish to explore the nearby towns of Baganga and Cateel, the ideal route back to Davao would via Compostella Valley. You can ride the Mallen bus that departs at 3 AM from Cateel.
  • As always, LEAVE NO TRACE. Pick up your trash and dispose of them properly. Don’t vandalize and respect the place and its people.

Moscow metro to be more tourist-friendly

A new floor sign system at the Moscow metro's Pushkinskaya station. Source: Vladimir Pesnya / RIA Novosti

For many years now, Moscow has lagged behind St. Petersburg when it comes to making life easy for tourists, especially where getting around the city is concerned. Whereas the northern capital installed English-language maps, signs and information points throughout its subway system in the late 2000s, the Russian capital’s metro remained a serious challenge for foreign visitors to navigate.

Recent visitors to Moscow may have noticed some signs that change is afoot, however. In many stations of the Moscow subway, signs have appeared on the floor – with large lettering in Russian and English – indicating the direction to follow in order to change lines. Previously, foreign visitors using the Moscow metro had to rely solely upon deciphering the Russian-language signs hanging from the ceilings.

Student volunteers help tourists find their way in Moscow

However, this new solution has a significant drawback. “The floor navigation is visible only to a small stream of people – fewer than three people per meter. During peak hours, this navigation will simply not be noticed,” said Konstantin Trofimenko, Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Studies.

One of the biggest problems for tourists in the Russian capital remains the absence of English translations of the names of subway stations in the station vestibules and on platforms. The Department of Transportation in Moscow has not commented yet as to when this problem will be solved. However, Latin transliterations of station names can already be found in the subway cars themselves.

Finding the right exit

At four of the central stations – Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii, Lubyanka and Kuznetsky Most – the city authorities have now installed colorful stands at the exits with schematic diagrams of the station’s concourse and surrounding area, which provide information about the main attractions and infrastructural facilities.

The schematic diagrams are the work of British specialists from the City ID and Billings Jackson Design firms, who have already implemented successful projects in New York and London.

According to Alexei Novichkov, expert at the Design Laboratory at the Higher School of Economics, the design of these information booths raises no objections: The color solutions, font, layout and icons are consistent with international standards.

Kudankulam

However, the stands do have some shortcomings. “Many questions are raised about the fact that the developers of these maps did not apply orientation to the north, and have provided layouts of the surrounding areas with respect to the exits,” says Novichkov. “A system like that is used for road navigators, but most of the ‘paper’ guides and maps are oriented strictly to north. The subway map is also oriented to north, so people may become confused.”

Muscovites and foreign visitors are generally positive about these navigation elements, with most of them citing the numbered exits from the subway as the most useful feature.

The fact is that many Moscow subway stations have several exits. One of the busiest central stations of the Moscow subway in particular, Kitay-Gorod, has more than a dozen exits. Previously, these exits were differentiated from each other only with signs in Russian referring to the names of streets and places of interest to which they led – making it easy for tourists and those with poor navigation skills to get confused.

Now, when making an appointment to meet a friend, instead of struggling to find the right spot when they tell you: “I'll meet you at the exit to Solyanka Street,” you can just propose to meet under a specific exit number.

“I’ve lived in Moscow for seven years,” says Angelika, a designer from Voronezh, “but I still don’t always know where to go to find the place I need, so the new schematic diagrams will be very useful. Previously, some subway stations had maps, but not with so much detail.”

Teething problems

Foreigners, meanwhile, focus their attention on other elements. “It is good that the new information boards have QR-codes, which can be ‘read’ by smartphones,” says Florentina, a writer from Vienna. But there are also shortcomings. “The English font of the information on posters and in the captions to theaters and museums is too small – you have to come very close to see it well,” she says.

Pleasant encounters on the streets of Moscow

Florentina was also dissatisfied with the fact that such posters are not provided at all subway stations: “When I was trying to find Tsaritsyno Park (a museum and reserve in the south of Moscow) at a subway station with the same name, it turned out to be quite difficult,” she says.

“There are no maps with landmarks for other areas, such as those already in the city center. There were no clear pointers in the English language, and the passers-by I met did not speak in English, so they could not help me,” she adds.

Officials say that the navigation system is gradually being redeveloped and improved. According to Darya Chuvasheva, a press representative for the Department of Transport of Moscow, the introduction of a unified navigation system will take place in stages.

“By the end of 2014, the system will first appear on the first subway stations on the Circle Line. By the end of 2015, we plan to install the system at all major stopping points, subway stations and transport interchange hubs,” says Chuvasheva.
