by Swapnil Sanghavi | Jun 30, 2023 | Himachal , Manali | 0 comments

Are you looking for a super handy list of things to pack for Manali especially as a first-time traveler ? Don’t worry I’ve got you covered.

Based on my frequent travels to Manali and Himalayas in general, I am curating this super useful list of things to carry for a hassle-free Manali trip.

31 Super Essential Things to Pack for Manali

Find the List Below.

Clothes to pack for Manali Trip

Trousers/ Trek pants/ Shorts

Trousers or trek pants are great options for Manali across all the seasons.

They are very breathable and easy to move in. Unlike denims or jeans.

2-3 trousers or trek pants should be enough for a week-long trip to Manali.

Woolen pants will be apt during bone-chilling winters while Shorts can be worn during the summer and monsoon months.

Shirts/ Tshirts/ tops/ Dresses/ Indian wear

Men can wear Shirts or Tshirts depending on their liking and comfort.

While women can choose from Shirts, tshirts, tops. dresses, Indian wear depending on their liking, comfort & season.

Warm Clothes to Pack For Manali

Barring June to August, Manali is quite cold. Late Autumn, Early spring, Winters have sub-zero or close to sub-zero temperatures.

Therefore packing appropriate warm clothes is very essential.

Before moving further, if you had questions on renting winter clothes in Manali, check out this blog

Thermal Inners

Thermals trap body heat and act as a first layer of defense against cold.

Ensure that you carry them in the winters, late autumn, early spring. For the rest of the year, they can be optional.

But I carry them anyway no matter what the season as they do not weigh much.

Light Woolen/Sweater/Hoodie/Sweatshirt

No matter what the season, You at least need one of these to deal with the cold in Manali.

Therefore, depending on the season you are traveling in, pack an appropriate number of layers.

Remember weather in the mountains is fickle. Therefore, it’s always better to pack extra layers.

I personally have been using this basic fleece layer from Quechua and it’s quite effective.

Along with this fleece layer, I also tend to always carry a light sweater no matter the season.

A decent Winter Jacket

Peak winters, late autumn, early spring calls for an effective winter jacket that sustains negative temperatures.

Therefore it is essential to pack one if you are visiting in the aforementioned period (October to April)

Again reiterating it’s always better to carry a decent winter jacket even in Summers & Monsoon.

As high-altitude areas near Manali like Lahaul, Hamta are cold even in Summer.

This Quechua Jacket is perfect for a place like Manali and works well in negative temperatures  with other warm layers.

Woolen Socks, Gloves, Caps

Pack 2 pairs of Woolen socks, a pair Gloves and a Cap in case you are visiting in peak winters.

Otherwise It’s optional in my opinion. But again there is no harm in packing irrespective of the season as they do not weigh much.

Footwear To Carry For Manali Trip

Below is a brief section on what footwear you should carry on the trip to Manali.

To get more details and insights pertaining to the footwear check this out “ what shoes to carry for Manali ”.

Flip-Flops/Sandals

Pack flip-flops or sandals to move around the property you’re staying at.

They also tend to come in handy for short walks around the property.

Normal Shoes/Casual Shoes

For sightseeing, normal shoes like sport shoes, sneakers etc should suffice. So ensure you pack them.

Hiking/Trekking Shoes

Pack appropriate hiking shoes in case you are looking for day hikes or multi-day treks in and around Manali.

Basic hiking shoes suffice for day-hikes and non-snowy trails. This is what I’ve been using.

For multi-day treks in the higher altitudes, carrying decent hiking shoes is really recommended.

Essential to Carry For Manali trip

In the age of UPI and digital payments, this might sound stupid, but carrying a little bit of cash is always advisable.

Not everyone always accepts UPI or digital payment.

Government approved  ID is a must on a trip to Manali. Ensure that you carry it.

Reason being the hotels, hostels, homestays ask for them at the time of check-in.

Water bottle

Carry a water bottle and refill it instead of buying packaged water.

There are umpteen pure water resources around Manali. Also, you can refill at the place of your stay.

Whenever outdoors like hiking or exploring in and around Manali, a daypack comes in handy.

I personally use a 10 litre quechua daypack to carry fruits, water bottle, or packed food.

If you are visiting snowbound areas in and around Manali, carrying sunglasses is always advisable.

Make sure you carry a Poncho if you are traveling to Manali no matter what the season.

If you plan to venture outdoors during rainy days, they will surely come in really handy.

Toiletries to Pack for Manali Trip

Soap/Shampoo/Sanitizer

Unless you’ve booked semi-luxury or luxury properties, you won’t be given any toiletries.

So ensure that you pack necessary items like soaps, shampoo’s, sanitizer, bodywash of your choice.

Moisturizer/Sunscreen/Conditioners

Tanning and dry skin can be common effects of altitude and cold-dry weather of Manali

Therefore, ensure to pack sunscreen and moisturizer, to avoid or mitigate its effect.

Menstrual hygiene products

Fellow female travelers, I’m sure you know better but please ensure you carry your menstrual hygiene products.

You never know when it may come handy, especially if you are visiting away from Manali town.

Medicines to carry on a trip to Manali

Basic first aid like antiseptic liquid, medical bandage come in handy for minor wounds. So, ensure you carry them.

Medicines for Common Ailments

Make sure you carry basic over the counter medicines for cold, fever, headache, bodyache, allergy etc.

Dolo 650 is one such over the counter medicine for fever, body ache etc.

Over the counter medicines for cold and sore throat include Wikoryl and other brands.

You can also carry basic over the counter medicines like Avomine for motion sickness.

Medicines like Cetirizine or Atarax can be helpful in case of itching, allergies and other ailments.

But make sure you consult your doctor first before taking any of these medicines.

Medicines Specific to you

If you are suffering from any chronic or long-term illness, Ensure you carry your specific medicines.

Sometimes you might not find specific medicines or brands even in Manali or Kullu for that matter.

Medicines for AMS

Although Manali itself is not high-altitude, there are places of interest around Manali that are.

Acclimatization is the key to avoid AMS, but medicines could help you acclimatize faster in case you have less time.

Acetazolamide is the medicine to help you acclimatize faster. While dexamethasone is to treat AMS.

For more details, please check out this blog “ how tackle AMS in the high altitude valleys ”

To conclude, I am sure now you have a clear idea on what to pack for Manali.

The Ultimate MANALI Packing List! 5 Things You Must Carry

By Nasher Miles September 21, 2022

The Ultimate MANALI Packing List! 5 Things You Must Carry

Manali – the land of Gods is known for its picturesque valley and snowclad mountains. Nestled between the Dhauldar and the Pir-Punjal ranges of the Himalayas, it is the go-to place for North Indians to beat the scorching summer season. It won’t be wrong to call Manali – India’s very own Switzerland. The weather is pleasantly mild during summers while bone-chilling during winters. However, whichever time of the year you may choose to visit Manali, the place serves as a much-anticipated getaway for nature lovers and adventure sports enthusiasts.

1. Warm clothing

Thermal innerwear is a must for a trip to Manali, especially in the forthcoming months of autumn and winter. The night temperature plummets below zero and the day temperature also requires warm clothing to comfortably enjoy your outing. Also, lined sweatpants, joggers, and jackets are much-recommended.

2. A daypack

Manali is well-connected to numerous tourist sights. A daypack or  backpack  is quintessential to carry important things while visiting nearby places like Rohtang Pass, Solang Valley, Jogini Falls, etc. A trip to old Manali, or the Manali Sanctuary is also best explored while keeping your hands free and daypack full.

3. Polarized sunglasses

The altitude of Manali and its nearby areas like Rohtang Pass makes it ideal to carry polarized sunglasses to chase the glare away. If you’re visiting snow-laden areas, it becomes all the more critical to wear sunglasses to steer clear of harsh UV rays and what’s popularly called snow-blindness.

4. Medication

The journey to Manali is one that goes up from plains to mountains and then settles in a valley. It is advisable to carry over-the-counter medications for nausea, vomiting, motion sickness, cold, and fever. Carrying a small medicine kit might sound cliché; however, it can come in handy anytime during your Manali trip.

5. For the nightlife

The nightlife in Manali has expanded its wings in the last few years. However, most visitors still like to embrace the coziness inside their hotel rooms, around fireplaces, or bonfires. The aura gives you the best opportunity to disconnect from the digital world, and reconnect with your family or friends over a game of cards, dumb charades, etc., or even read your favorite book in solitude.

While you’d agree to carry all of these essential items for your trip to Manali, we highly recommend packing everything in a hardside suitcase set. Hardside suitcases can be easily stacked in your car’s trunk or over the top carrier. Hardside suitcases are reckoned as the best travel  trolley bags  as they are unbreakable, resilient, and extra-lightweight, therefore your ease and satisfaction are guaranteed.

Polarised Shades

The altitude of Manali and its surrounding areas, like the Rohtang Pass, makes it perfect for carrying polarised shades to drive the glare away. Suppose you are exploring snow-covered areas. In that case, wearing sunglasses becomes vital for protection against harsh ultraviolet areas.

The beautiful hill town of Manali is adequately connected to many tourist spots. Daypacks or backpacks are essential for carrying important items and documentation to attractions such as Solang Valley, Jogini Falls, Rohtang Pass, etc. You can also stuff water and quick snacks like dry fruits, cakes, and biscuits in the backpack or daypack. Manali travel essentials: a perfect checklist for manali packing, here’s your checklist of things to carry on the manali trip include these 21 essential items to your manali packing list and have a great touring experience at india’s popular hill station..

Manali Travel Essentials: Checklist for Manali trip

Manali is the most loved destination by tourists interested in leisure vacations on the hills and couples who want to spend quality time. But packing for such a trip can be tiresome. With a lot of things to consider, missing out on Manali travel essentials is quite common. And this might bring a sad phase in your trip when you realise you forgot something really important. So, here is a checklist for Manali trip that you must go through before you set off to explore the snow-capped mountains of one of the most popular hill stations in India.

Manali Travel Essentials Checklist

Apparels: what to wear in manali.

  • Base Layer: Keep some trousers, t-shirts, tops, tees and stuff for your basic wear. Trendy yet easy to keep up with for the whole day if you are into exploring. But, in case you want to go for a leisure trip, keep the good outfits you enjoy in photographs. Try to keep more breathable ones if you are going for an exploring trip.
  • Outer Layer: This place is always cold enough for a couple of waterproof jackets to carry on your trip. Especially after June, keep more warm ones.
  • Thermals: Another must-have item when it comes to Manali travel essentials. Most people avoid keeping thermals as they are not used to wearing them. But Manali calls for more and more warm thermals!
  • Warm Socks: In cold weather, the usual cotton socks suck. Even with the heaters on, places like Manali need a pair of warm socks to be worn.
  • Cap: Whether it’s summer or winter, a cap is a must. Only the type of cap will change but keeping one will always be a requirement. In summer, try keeping hats to protect your face from the harsh UV rays.
  • Shoes: A variety of footwear on a leisure trip is a need. But always keep a pair of hiking/trekking shoes in your backpack when it comes to hills. You don’t know when you might need it.
  • Gloves: If it’s winter and you don’t want your hands to freeze in the chilly cold weather. Keep a warm pair of gloves on this fun vacation.
  • Flip Flops: The weather in Manali is cold and wearing shoes and trendy footwear all the time can be tedious. Use a good pair of flip-flops for leisure walks near your hotel/bnb.

Other Must-Keep Manali Travel Essentials

  • Backpacks: For your exploring stuff, keep backpacks to carry essentials for the day like umbrellas, water bottles, outer layers you want to wear later on and more. Make sure to keep a durable one with good carrying capacity and also lightweight.
  • Water bottles: Packed water in the mountains is quite expensive and the regular water there tastes well enough for drinking. Also, you might need to carry water to the destination with no shops around, especially when you’re setting off for trekking.
  • Sunglasses: Keep a good pair of glasses not only for a great look in pictures but also for saving your eyes from harmful UV.
  • SPF: A moisturising SPF is equally important for the Manali trip as the high altitude there can make your skin dry and tanned.
  • Toiletries: Always keep travel-sized soaps, body washes, face washes, shampoos, conditioners, and other essential toiletries. It is always good to carry a proper bath kit.
  • Government IDs: Do not forget to carry IDs along with you when you go on these trips.
  • Cash: Most places are connected by online payments but cash in such areas is quite a must.
  • Power Bank: Always keep a portable battery with you on the trips as capturing pictures for the whole day is not only tiring for you but for your phone too. So, to look out for emergencies, keep power banks with you.
  • Laundry bags: To avoid getting all your stuff messy, keep a laundry bag. Most of us forget to keep this in essentials and then look for something to put the dirty clothes from trekking/hiking.

Optional Things to Carry on Your Trip to the Manali Trip

  • Raincoat/Umbrella: In the unpredictable weather of Manali, things to safeguard yourself from rain are as important as clothing. Especially if you don’t enjoy rain. For the one who loves rain, this is optional but don’t dare to enjoy rain in the winter season.
  • Camera: For a perfect showcase of your trip on social media handles or for keeping HD memories, bring a camera with you on the trip to Manali.
  • Medicines: Always keep medicines while going to such high altitudes. Basic ones with other stuff like bandaids and all.
  • Wipes: Keeping dry and wet both kinds of wipes is quite essential. After a tiring day, you will need a wet wipe in this cold environment to clean up to get ready for dinner.

Manali Weather & Best Time to Visit

If you are seeking to escape from boiling summers or are planning to see the white snows with some exciting adventure sports, here’s a seasonal breakup of the climatic conditions pertaining in Manali so that you can arrange your tour accordingly

Summers in Manali – summer knocks on the doors of Manali in the early march itself and the temperature from march to June ranges from 10 degrees to 25 degrees. Weather remains pleasant during these months and one can go along with just the base layer thermals during these days. This is the best time to visit Manali as the weather is not that chilling, which serves as the motivation to try hands on the outdoor activities such as paragliding, river rafting, trekking, camping, and much more. Also, one gets to see the blooming scenery of this place which is covered with flowers and greenery during the months of March-May.

Winters in Manali – winter onsets in Manali in the month of November and lasts till February. Temperature goes as low as -1 degrees and the place experiences snowfalls and white views throughout this season. It is an ideal destination for travel enthusiasts who aspire to go skiing in the winters.

Monsoons in Manali – Monsoon in Manali starts from July and lasts till mid-September. The place experiences a heavy rainfall which leads to landslides, floods, and tricky climatic conditions thus, it is not advisable for the visitors to come to Manali during monsoons.

How to Get There

In order to reach your lovely destination, you might be wondering how to reach there and by what means. Here’s a brief overview: – By Air – owing to the prevailing climatic conditions, flights are considered quite unfavorable to travel to Manali, however, if you still prefer traveling by air as compared to other means, then Bhuntar is the nearest airport which is around 50 km from Manali. Domestic flights run from Delhi and Chandigarh till Bhuntar and a cab/taxi can be booked from thereon till Manali.

By Bus and Train – Talking about the train route, Chandigarh is the nearest railway station and from thereon, one has to do a 9-hour journey via bus/cab. Manali is nearby to other tourist spots as well such as Kullu, Dharamshala, Leh, etc. so the Himachal Pradesh roadways and private buses are easily available. It is advisable to book Volvo and sleeper coach buses which provide good sleep and comfort during the journey and are affordable as well.

By self-drive – one can also reach Manali by driving their own vehicle. the extremely fascinating views and the turns and twists of the natural beauty at every other lap makes it more attractive for the travelers to go by their own vehicle in order to optimize their pleasure from the trip. However, if you are not very comfortable driving, especially in the hilly terrains, then it is advisable to hire a driver for the journey.

What to Wear in Manali

Manali possesses the real charm and is so beautiful, so our visitors would also like to look charming and beautiful with their wonderful attires but at the same time keep the extreme weather conditions in mind as well. If one intends to go to Manali during the summers when the temperature is moderate, then a stylish base layer will do the work, or a mid-layer jacket/hoodie styled with the inner casual wear will also be suitable. However, if you are traveling during winters and will also be participating in adventure sports then the following items can be considered for wearing: – Puffer jacket and parkas will be the most suitable fit as they will protect against the chilly winds. Kosha offers a great range of winter apparel where these jackets provide the right amount of warmth to the body, are waterproof and at the same time are lightweight which makes them easy and comfortable to wear and carry around. A hardshell waterproof jacket, a good pair of socks and gloves with the right material which doesn’t support itching, mufflers, sweaters, and pullovers are the other items that need to be considered while planning your Manali trip. “ I recently did a trip to Leh Ladakh with JustWravel team, and boy, was it an experience for a lifetime! The trip leaders - Geetanjali, Ashish, Shashank - took such good care of the travellers. The team's thoughtfulness and local experience really shone through in the way the itinerary was planned. Plenty of photo opportunities, and daily briefings to prepare us for the unfamiliar climate and terrains of Ladakh. We had sufficient time for rest & recuperation and the accommodations provided were the best-possible, given the environmental conditions in that particular region. Really glad I did this trip solo and chose to go ahead with JustWravel's expertise. All we had to do was show up and the team ensured that we would have a great time - exploring the destinations and clicking away pictures of the beautiful mountains, valleys & lakes. Special shoutout to Geetanjali who really helped keep the spirits high and thanks to her, a group of strangers just felt like long-lost friends. Truly a memorable trip! ”

Just Wravel has a well curated itinerary that covers all important sights but also leaves enough time for personal relaxation/exploration. Our Trip leaders: sashang and abhishek ashish were helpful and available throughout the duration of trip. Safety of Bikers was ensured, through the entire duration of trip. Food and Accomodation were great as well. Would strongly recommend Just wravel for anyone planning a trip to Ladakh. ”

Few places in the world are as diverse in their topography as Himachal Pradesh. With its river flowing through jagged rocks, rich green meadows, and serene lakes surrounded by mountains covered in thick layers of snow, resembling the seven skies above, it truly is like a little slice of heaven on earth.

In the grasslands, many flora and fauna flourish in the shelter that the valleys have provided them and you can see many rare wild species like the snow leopard, Himalayan Yak, Musk deer, and many more living in peace in nature.

Himachal is the kind of place that immediately lifts your spirits, all you have to do is just be there and breathe in the crisp air. Along with the serenity that it offers, it also provides tons of opportunities for adventure, no matter if they are beginners or experienced in seeking the thrill that these activities have to offer.

On this backpacking trip to Himachal from Delhi, we have handpicked some of the best locations in Himachal Pradesh that you must visit.

This 7-day trip to Himachal covers all the desirable destinations that fascinate tourists and adventure enthusiasts alike.

From one of the most popular hill stations of our country, Manali, to the small captivating village Kasol which is situated in the Kullu district, this trip is a perfect blend of popular tourist attractions and a peaceful getaway to undiscovered locations.

Manali, popularly known as Lover’s paradise has earned this reputation because of its beautiful views, cool climate, and tons of activities that it provides to people to keep things lively and fun.

On this trip, we explore some of the best places to visit in Manali, where we take you on a sightseeing tour to Hadimba Temple, Vashisht Temple, Mall Road, and Cafe hopping in Old Manali to give you a glimpse of what life is like in this township.

Our next stop, Solang Valley , is the hotspot for adventure lovers as it provides enthralling activities like paragliding, trekking, mountaineering, ATV Ride, Zipline, and even skiing if the season permits and so much more making it a must-visit for adrenaline junkies.

After experiencing the highs of soaring through the sky, you’d be in desperate need of some calm which the small town of Kasol caters to perfectly. The growing popularity of this hill station is because of the plethora of experiences it offers including spiritual awakenings, which is why we’d make sure that you visit the Manikaran temple which is popular for many reasons, one of them being the co-existence of bitterly cold water with boiling water springs on either side of the Parvati river.

Gurudwara Manikaran Sahib is also nearby and attracts many Hindu and Sikh devotees every year,

Our next stop, Jibhi, remains an offbeat stay in Himachal because it is yet to be touched and exploited by industrialization and has preserved its vegetation in the form of lush green valleys. It’s also popular for sparkling waterfalls and freshwater lakes which make this place perfect for spending some quality time with a partner or even yourself.

It is almost impossible to visit Himachal and suppress the urge to see the view from the top of the summit which is why we organize exciting and easy treks to Jalori Pass & Sirosar lake .

This Manali backpacking trip is curated after keeping all your desires in mind and the trip will take you to some of the best places in Manali, Kasol, and Jibhi so that you can experience the rich culture and heritage of ‘Lands of Gods’ aka Himachal.

Now that we have hopefully convinced you, we hope you get to learn all the reasons why you must visit this beautiful state on your own on this backpacking trip.

Kasol itself doesn’t receive a heavy snowfall as it's situated at a slightly lower altitude when compared to other destinations. But nearby villages like Malana, Tosh, and more get covered in the snow completely in the months of December & January.

Jibhi, which is a tiny hamlet, nestled in the lap of the Himalayas receives the best snowfall by the end of November and remains like that till February . Places like Jalori Pass and Shoja village are especially the spots where you can experience the best of snowfall on this Himachal Backpacking trip.

Carry-on packing tips to avoid baggage fees

Packing for a flight? Managing to fit everything into your carry-on can help you save money by avoiding checked bag fees. Unfortunately, those costs can add up when you have multiple bags or when you’re flying with your family.

In good news, there are plenty of ways to maximize what you can fit into your carry-on bag, so you can reduce or avoid checked bag fees altogether. Here’s how to do it:

Start With the Right Carry-On

manali trip bag packing

Choosing the right carry-on will help increase the amount you can pack. Audrey Kohout, CEO of Luggage Forward , explains that maximizing what you can fit into luggage isn’t always about your carry-on’s pockets or compartments.

“The type of bag you’re using can actually have a major impact on the amount you bring with you,” Kohout explains. “Hard shell cases are very trendy right now, but you might be surprised to hear that you can actually fit more in a soft-sided bag.”

Kohout explains that a fabric shell carry on has more give to accommodate objects of different shapes. Plus, hard shell cases are prone to breaking and cracking. Not only will you be able to fit more in a soft bag of the same size, but you’ll also have a durable bag that keeps your items better protected.

Choose Travel-Friendly Clothing

Packing your clothes tightly often leads to wrinkles, so strategically select the clothes that you plan to bring.

“Choose clothing with fabric that is convenient and doesn’t wrinkle easily when rolled up in a crammed bag,” recommends Kohout. She notes that if you ever need to quickly wash a garment in the sink while you’re on the go, it’s helpful to have chosen a travel-friendly garment that dries quickly, like the versatile Women’s Long Sleeve Safari Shirt , which also features UPF 50+ sun protection.

Bring Multi-Use Clothes

You can cut down on the number of clothes you need to pack by choosing garments that can serve multiple purposes according to Daniel Herszberg, an avid traveler who visited every country in the world by age 30 and owns the travel magazine, Travel Insighter .

“For example, choose pants with zips that become shorts, or swimming trunks that can also be casual shorts,” he says.

Use Packing Cubes

Kohout recommends using packing cubes to streamline your packing efficiency.

“Using packing cubes allows you to tightly fold and squeeze in as much as possible in each cube, without the stress of whether or not it will fit completely in your bag,” she says. “They’re also great for dividing up your clothes by day, by event and upon arrival, and they keep your dirty, smelly clothes away from the fresh, clean ones.”

Compress Clothes With Vacuum-Seal Bags

Kevin Mercier is a travel photographer and travel blogger at Kevmrc . He wears bulkier items, like jackets or boots, on the plane to free up luggage space.

Mercier also uses vacuum-seal bags to compress his clothing and save space in his carry-on.

“[Vacuum bags are] a game-changer for maximizing storage room,” says Mercier.

Pack a Shoe Bag

Cramming pairs of shoes into your carry-on can take up unnecessary space and get your clothes dirty.

“A compact shoe bag helps keep my footwear separate from my clothing, preventing any dirt or debris from soiling my clothes and maximizing space in my carry-on,” explains Mercier.

Buy a Small Toiletry Bag

Mercier keeps toiletries organized by choosing a small toiletry bag with multiple compartments or pouches. That strategic bag choice helps to cut down on space, too. “Opting for a small toiletry bag helps limit the number of items I can bring, and ensures everything fits snugly in my carry-on without taking up too much space,” he explains.

Pack Multiuse Toiletries

Just as you would choose multiuse clothes, you can use the same advice in selecting your toiletries.

“Try and bring multipurpose items, like deodorant that doubles as perfume, or body wash with shampoo,” recommends Herszberg.

A product like HAN Skincare Cosmetics 3-in-1 Multistick for Cheeks, Lips and Eyes will help you cut back on the amount of makeup products you need to tote. It packs a punch of vibrant color in a compact container and comes in a variety of shades to suit every taste.

From packing with vacuum seal bags to using packing cubes, these carry on packing tips can help you save on those pesky baggage fees on your next trip.

This Genius Trick Helps Overpackers Like Myself Get ‘Extra Space’ in Their Suitcases — and It's Only $29 at Amazon

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

It may seem counterintuitive to tell you to pack an extra item to ensure that you have room in your carry-on for trip purchases, but trust me now and thank me later. As a frequent flier, I love traveling with only a carry-on . But sometimes, especially on trips to urban destinations, leaving room for my souvenirs isn't possible. That's why I always pack Wandf’s Foldable Duffel ; it's become my go-to hack for freeing up space in my suitcase.

For my return flight, I like to throw all of my dirty laundry into the packable duffel bag and check it, and reserve the newfound space in my roller bag for all of my precious new purchases. That's why I call it my overflow or backup bag. But when I'm embarking on my trip, I fold it up neatly and tightly to easily stash it in my carry-on and stay within the allotted two-bag minimum on most airlines.

Wandf Foldable Duffel Bag

The Wandf Foldable Duffel is available in four sizes, 24 inches, 28 inches, 32 inches, or 36 inches, so shoppers have their choice of carrying capacity to best accommodate their trip length and the amount of clothes that they've packed. Thanks to its handy compression capabilities, the bag can fold into itself and shrink down to as little as 10.5 inches by 2.9 inches. At this size, it takes up no more room than a beanie, folded rain jacket, or small purse would. And, its exceptional packability offers some give to smush even more under the approved weight of a carry-on suitcase or another item.

Though the water-resistant nylon material is durable, it is still very lightweight, which is why it's worth noting that this duffel bag shouldn’t really be used for any prized possessions or breakables, but it certainly offers plenty of space for clothing or miscellaneous (and soft) items. In fact, one Amazon reviewer said that she used hers to fit her “large Coleman sleeping bag" after deeming the "original stuff bag" that it came with to be "useless." She raved, "I found this foldable duffle bag and it totally fit the bill."

For extra packing space, the large foldable duffel bag is outfitted with a dedicated shoe compartment (which you can use to squeeze in extra items), one interior zippered pocket, and one exterior zippered pocket, as well as an adjustable, detachable padded shoulder strap should you decide to carry it crossbody style; the convenient sleeve on the back allows the duffel to slide over your suitcase handles when you're on the move. Additionally, the top carrying handles make it easy to grab off of a moving baggage claim carousel, as well as when you're loading it in and out of your car or into and out of the plane's overhead bin.

When I purchased mine, I didn't realize how much I'd be using it, so I opted for the non-flashy gray version , but the Wandf Foldable Duffel comes in up to 12 different colors depending on the size that you opt for. Bolder hues like the fuchsia pink and lime green ones may be more easily recognizable on the luggage carousel if losing it is a concern.

In addition to being won over by its vast range of colors, Amazon shoppers have taken to the review section to praise the Wandf Foldable Duffel 's spaciousness, versatility, and packability. As of right now, it's racked up more than 4,000 five-star ratings from customers, one of whom shared that it "saved my trip to Asia as I bought a lot of miscellaneous goods and had no room in my suitcase to carry back to the Americas." They also added, "The material is tough enough to not rip as the bag was full to the brim when I brought it back and hauled it everywhere I went.”

And according to another traveler , it fits under most plane seats should you use it as a personal bag or an extra carry-on. Similarly, a third shopper highlighted that "the durable, good-looking bag expanded nicely and worked out really well as a second piece of luggage." And a final buyer said that they were "able to fit everything I wanted, plus I had extra space."

If you’re a notorious overpacker and know that you won't have room for shopping once you shut that suitcase before your outbound flight, take a cue from my travel book and grab the Wandf Foldable Duffel . Or, keep scrolling to see some of the other top-rated packable duffels that are winning over Amazon shoppers.
