What to Know About All 16 Ships in the Celebrity Cruises Fleet

Here’s what you need to know about every Celebrity Cruises ship.

Celebrity Cruises is among our readers' favorite mega-ship ocean lines — coming in at No. 1 in 2022 and No. 2 in 2023 as part of our World's Best Awards (WBA) — and it's easy to see why. This WBA Hall of Fame honoree truly shines with its sophisticated, tasteful decor and sleek onboard spaces, including swanky lounges, dazzling bars, gourmet specialty restaurants, and contemporary suites. Almost all Celebrity ships, except the three Xpedition-class vessels, offer standard amenities like casinos, retail shops, spas, and Broadway-level shows and entertainment. There's also the adults-only Solarium and The Retreat, the latter of which is reserved exclusively for suite guests. Paul Brady , Travel + Leisure ’s news director and cruise expert, told us, “Because its ships offer so much to do, Celebrity is a fantastic choice for families, who can choose from a huge array of well-designed staterooms and suites. Groups of friends, too, will find much to like, thanks to the brand's fantastic dining (and drinking) options.”

Meet the Expert

Paul Brady is the news director at Travel + Leisure and the brand's expert on all things cruise.

Kari Becker is a travel advisor at Marvelous Mouse Travels.

With a fleet of 16 ships, it can be tricky to determine which Celebrity ship is best suited for your specific needs.Travel advisor Kari Becker of Marvelous Mouse Travels explains, "Whatever your taste, there is a perfect Celebrity cruise to meet your needs." She continues, telling T+L, "There are three main classes: the Edge, Solstice, and Millennium classes, all with unique features, benefits, and advantages." The Millennium-class ships are smaller which, per Becker, may "offer a more personalized experience." Solstice is the largest class of Celebrity's fleet, says Becker. "When designed, these ships focused on innovation, with unique spaces including a real grass lawn, and unique onboard experiences, such as glass-making classes." Last but not least is Celebrity's Edge class. Per the pro, the ships in the line's newest class are "the largest of the fleet, offering more space for additional experiences and restaurants, including a massive pool deck, floating platform at sea (aptly called the Magic Carpet), and Rooftop Garden." All in all, she says, "The Edge series is for guests looking for transformative cruising and splendor with countless gourmet restaurants and immersive entertainment."

Ahead, we’ve listed every Celebrity ship currently in service — complete with their notable amenities, launch year, guest capacity, and other need-to-know insights — to help you determine which vessel is best for your next voyage.

Celebrity Ascent

Inaugural Year: 2023

Ship Class: Edge

Ship Capacity: 3,260 passengers

Celebrity’s newest ship is also its flashiest — in the best way possible. The Celebrity Ascent offers an expanded Retreat area (exclusive to suite guests), complete with a 40-percent-larger two-story sundeck, and the swanky Sunset Bar, which is 180 percent larger. Beyond The Retreat, there are 32 bars, restaurants, and lounges, a lush Rooftop Garden, an adults-only Solarium, the three-level Eden restaurant and entertainment venue, and the Magic Carpet, a floating platform that reaches 13 stories above sea level. Finally, stay in one of the Iconic Suites, the largest in the Celebrity fleet, for the ultimate splurge.

Celebrity Beyond

Inaugural Year: 2022

Celebrity Beyond is nearly identical to Celebrity Ascent . Both Edge-class sister ships have the same spectacular amenities and features, including a state-of-the-art spa and fitness center that’s sure to impress wellness-seekers, who will also be happy in one of the AquaClass Sky Suites, which offer in-room yoga mats and fitness equipment. It’s also worth noting that these suite guests also enjoy access to the SEA Thermal Suite and a dedicated spa concierge. Don’t miss the adults-only Solarium, the Rooftop Garden, the aforementioned Eden, or the Magic Carpet, which offers the best views at sea.

Paul Brady was onboard the Beyond in October 2022. “My stateroom, 9164, was a Sky Suite, with a king bed facing a private terrace and a clever roll-open mirror that let natural light into the spacious bathroom. Dining at the Daniel Boulud restaurant Le Voyage was one highlight — with seven courses — but so too were casual cocktails at Sunset Bar, with its touch of Moroccan design influence courtesy of Nate Berkus, who dreamed up the multi-level lounge,” said Brady of his experience.

Celebrity Apex

Inaugural Year: 2020

Ship Capacity: 2,910 passengers

The second Edge-class ship, Celebrity Apex , made its grand debut in 2020. It boasts an abundance of stylish onboard spaces, including the Rooftop Garden and the adults-only Solarium. Access to the exclusive Retreat area is reason alone to book one of the contemporary suites. Other highlights include the dazzling three-story Grand Plaza, where you’ll find the aptly named Martini Bar, one of 29 bars, lounges, and restaurants aboard Apex , along with the orange-hued Magic Carpet, which offers live music and a full bar 13 feet above sea level.

“I was fortunate to snag one of just a handful of Royal Suites on the ship, 12105, which had the look of a chic coastal Florida cottage, elevated with pops of bright green, geometric tiling, and contemporary art on the walls. The bathroom, with a deep soaking tub and spacious shower, rivaled any I’ve seen at land-based resorts,” said Brady of his November 2021 sailing. “Same with the Grand Plaza at the heart of the ship, a gathering place with a hotel lobby vibe in the best possible sense — and a glitzy Martini Bar.”

Located at the highest point of the ship, the Solstice Club is a haven for R&R with its canopy lounge beds — and it’s also a popular spot for morning yoga or evening stargazing sessions.

Celebrity Constellation

Inaugural Year: 2002

Ship Class: Millennium

Ship Capacity: 2,184 passengers

This 22-year-old Celebrity ship offers a more refined, subdued atmosphere compared to the line’s newer ships, which boast flashier features like the Magic Carpet. Meanwhile, the adults-only Persian Garden area in the spa is ideal for wellness-seeking cruisers.

Expect stylish spaces galore, including the Sunset and Martini bars, plus a sleek Rooftop Terrace where cruisers can catch outdoor flicks while basking in the ocean views.

Enjoy postcard-worthy views from the Panorama Deck, or take a dip in the hot tub on the Sunrise Deck. Passengers can choose from a handful of elegant rooms and suites; however, those who want their own balcony will need to spring on the latter.

Celebrity Infinity

Inaugural Year: 2000

Ship Capacity: 2,170 passengers

Celebrity Infinity is a favorite among laid-back cruisers — primarily couples and adult friend groups. Popular onboard hangout spots include the adults-only Solarium, the buzzy Rooftop Terrace, and, for suite guests, The Retreat. The ship also has a handful of specialty dining restaurants (in addition to complimentary ones, of course). Le Petit Chef is well worth the added fee thanks to a combination of gourmet eats and exhilarating entertainment complete with tabletop animations.

Celebrity Cruises Ships by Size, Age and Class (2022)

Celebrity Edge Departs STX Shipyard, Saint-Nazaire

Celebrity Cruises has an active fleet of fifteen ships currently with two further ships on order ( Celebrity Ascent and another Edge-class ship, currently unnamed).

In this guide, we will cover all the different ships in the Celebrity Cruises fleet and how they compare to each other.

Introduction to Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises was actually founded in 1988 in Greece, by the shipping company Chandris Group. Originally they were conducting upmarket cruises to Bermuda.

In 1997, Royal Caribbean International acquired Celebrity Cruises and during the same year, the five ships became six with the addition of Celebrity Mercury .

By 2000, the start of the brand new fleet was beginning to arrive – this was the Millennium Class ships, which began with Celebrity Millennium in 2000 and was followed by three additional ships ( Celebrity Infinity , Celebrity Summit and Celebrity Constellation ).

After that, Celebrity created the Solstice-class, which consisted of five ships. These proved extremely popular and Celebrity actually went back and ‘Solsticized’ the rest of their fleet to bring the other ships up to the same passenger experience.

In 2018, Celebrity Edge debuted with a non-traditional cruise ship bow (a Parabolic Ultra-Bow, if you may!) and The Magic Carpet (an open-air dining experience attached to the side of the ship that can move from the bottom to the top of the ship if needed and act as a platform during tender operations)

Celebrity Cruises’ Ships Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the newest celebrity ship.

Celebrity Beyond is the newest Celebrity Cruises’ ship – she joined the fleet in April 2022.

What Celebrity ship is Captain Kate on?

Captain Kate McCue is currently on Celebrity Beyond as Master of the ship.

What Celebrity ship goes to Alaska?

Celebrity Eclipse , Celebrity Solstice and Celebrity Millennium all sail in the Alaska region.

What is the biggest Celebrity ship?

Celebrity Beyond became the biggest ship of the Celebrity Cruises fleet in April 2022

What is the smallest Celebrity ship?

Celebrity Xploration is the smallest ship of the fleet at 319 GRT and carrying just 16 passengers. This ship is part of their Xpedition-class ships.

What is the oldest Celebrity ship?

Celebrity Millennium is the oldest ship in the Celebrity Cruises fleet. She joined the fleet in 2000.

Who owns Celebrity Cruises?

Celebrity Cruises is a Royal Caribbean brand, having been acquired by them in 1997 from the Greek-owned Chandris Group.

What type of bow does Celebrity Edge have?

Celebrity Edge has a Parabolic ultra bow. A curved rather than pointed bow that actually encapsulates the traditional bulbous bow as seen on ships usually. It offers a 20% greater energy efficiency.

Celebrity Cruises Ships by Size (from largest to smallest)

What does ‘tonnage (grt)’ mean.

GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) is a term used to calculate the volume inside a ship. It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.

How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?

You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.

Celebrity Cruises Ships by Age (from newest to oldest)

Are all celebrity cruises’ ships new builds.

Just two of the Celebrity’s ships were built and owned by other cruise lines before being acquired by Celebrity Cruises.

The two ships are Celebrity Xpedition (previously Sun Bay for Sun Bay Cruises) and Celebrity Xploration (previously Athala II for Ocean Adventures)

Both of these are quite different ships from your usual cruise ships, they are expedition ships. This means they are much smaller and have very different passenger and operational needs because they operate in much shallower, confined waters and must adhere to even stricter environmental laws in these regions.

Celebrity Cruises Ships by Class (from newest to oldest)

What is the difference between the edge-class ships.

Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex are both identical ships. However, Celebrity Beyond is an extra 20 meters longer and has one additional deck. This brings 179 more suites and staterooms to the ship, a bigger (40%) sundeck at The Retreat and the Sunset Bar is 180% larger.

Celebrity Ascent is due to match Celebrity Beyond in terms of size and capacity.

What is the difference between the Xpedition-class ships?

The three Xpedition-class ships that Celebrity Cruises own are all custom-built ships, with Celebrity Xploration previously operating as Athala II for Ocean Adventures.

  • Celebrity Xpedition is 90m long and carries 48 passengers
  • Celebrity Xploration is 30m long and carries 16 passengers
  • Celebrity Flora is 102m long and carries 100 passengers

Celebrity Xpedition had its capacity reduced from 100 passengers to just 48 passengers when Celebrity Flora launched. This is to meet the Ecuador permit requirements for cruising in the Galapagos region as Celebrity Cruises only has a permit to carry 164 passengers at any one time in the Galapagos region.

Celebrity Flora is the newest of the Xpedition-class and offers just forty suites – all of which have a private balcony. The ship has six decks and has a max cruising speed of just 12 knots.

Final Thoughts

Celebrity Cruises are known for its stylish cruise ships and fantastic service. A more premium version of parent company Royal Caribbean’s offerings some would say, Celebrity aim to make cruising trendy for those who would never consider cruising.

Their Edge-class ships, with famous designers and celebrity tie-ins, aim to break to entice those that enjoy luxury hotels and travel but are yet to experience a cruise and those that like both!

Celebrity Cruises Ships by Size: Biggest to Smallest

When comparing cruise ships, size is the most popular choice. Cruise ships are typically measured using gross tonnage(GT), a measure of a vessel’s internal volume.

Although size isn’t everything, it is a quick way to assess the number of facilities, restaurants, activities, and entertainment options available on a ship.

Below is a comparison of Celebrity Cruises’ ships by size, arranged from largest to smallest:

Celebrity Cruises Ships by Age: Newest to Oldest

If you want to experience the latest and greatest cruise ships, you might want to sail on a newer vessel.

Newer cruise ships often have better amenities, updated decor, and more activities.

Celebrity Millenium is the oldest cruise ship in Celebrity’s fleet. The cruise ship was built in 2000.

What Was the First Celebrity Cruise Ship?

Celebrity’s first cruise ship was the S.S. Meridian , which launched in 1990.

How Many Cruise Ships Does Celebrity Cruises Have?

Celebrity Cruises currently has 16 cruise ships in operation. Their fleet includes 13 large-sized cruise ships and three smaller yacht-sized vessels.

Celebrity’s Xpedition ships ( Celebrity Xploration , Celebrity Xpedition, and Celebrity Flora ) accommodate 16, 48, and 100 guests, respectively. The Xpedition-class ships offer luxury yacht-style voyages to the Galapagos, off the coast of Ecuador. These ships are tiny because the ports they visit can only accommodate small ships.

Who Owns Celebrity Cruises?

Royal Caribbean Group owns Celebrity Cruises. The parent company also operates sister cruise lines Royal Caribbean International and Silversea Cruises.

Celebrity Cruises’ newest ship is Beyond in every sense of the word

celebrity cruise line largest ship

What do Simone Biles, Gwyneth Paltrow, Nate Berkus, Daniel Boulud and one of the world’s most Insta-famous naked cats have in common? Here’s a hint: It weighs 140,600 tons, yet somehow manages to float.

Aptly named “Beyond,” Celebrity Cruises’ newest ship is sailing proof that some cruise companies never stop innovating – even during a global pandemic. In fact, Beyond’s steel-cutting took place in 2020. While the rest of the world was in lockdown, ship makers at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in northwestern France  were busy building the 17-deck, 1,073-foot-long vessel.

Capable of housing 3,260 passengers and 1,400 crew members, Beyond is basically an ocean-going village. The real groundbreaking ceremony, however, took place in March when Beyond’s captain, Kate McCue , became the first female captain to steer a cruise liner out of the 160-year-old shipyard.

Cruising after COVID:   What it's like to sail with a disability right now

It wasn’t Captain Kate’s first first. In 2015, she made waves as the first American woman to helm a major cruise ship. She’s an A-lister in the cruising industry and far from the only big name associated with Beyond. Biles is the ship’s godmother , Paltrow its well-being adviser and Berkus and Boulud lent their talents to the design and dining departments . McCue's naked cat is the ship’s unofficial mascot.

Beyond – which is currently in the Mediterranean before transitioning to the Caribbean this fall – is the third, and largest, ship in Celebrity’s avant-garde Edge Series . Like its sister ships, Edge and Apex , Beyond boasts something no other cruise line can claim: the world’s first cantilevered platform at sea.

Magic Carpet ride

Dubbed the Magic Carpet , this multiuse space hovers over the open water like a 2,100-square-foot floating shelf. It’s dynamic, too. When Tom Wright, the architect behind Dubai’s head-turning Burj Al Arab Hotel , designed the Magic Carpet, he made sure it was capable of moving seamlessly up and down more than 10 stories. During the day, it’s on Deck 14, allowing passengers to lounge in front of floor-to-ceiling water views. At night, it lowers to Deck 5, where it functions as a bar, live music venue and seafood restaurant .

You won't be bored:   What it's like to go on a cruise by yourself

Food from Daniel Boulud, more

The Magic Carpet’s “Dinner on the Edge” is just one of Beyond’s 32 food and beverage options, which include eight specialty restaurants. The crème de la crème is Le Voyage , Boulud’s first restaurant at sea. An ode to French cuisine inspired by international flavors, Le Voyage wows with dishes like Argentinian filet mignon; five-spice duck pithivier, a savory pie; and Brazilian moqueca, a fish stew.  It’s also hard not to be impressed by the walk-through wine display in Cosmopolitan . Like the ship’s other specialty restaurants, its menu was crafted by Cornelius Gallagher , the Michelin-starred chef who moonlights as Celebrity’s vice president of food and beverage.

Beyond also has buffet central, although it’s laid out more like a high-end food hall. Think Eataly  – but instead of just Italian food, expect to find a little bit of everything. Just don’t plan on serving yourself. This ship – which has one of the highest numbers of handwashing stations per capita – is playing it as safe as possible when it comes to germ prevention. For lighter fare like acai bowls and piñakales (basically piña coladas with kale in lieu of rum), passengers can refuel at the Spa Cafe . Its menu was given the green light by Paltrow,  Goop founder.

New accommodations

Beyond’s accommodations range from 181-square-foot interior staterooms  to two-story villas with private plunge pools and the seemingly endless two-bed, two-bath Iconic Suites . Measuring 1,892 square feet, they’re the largest in Celebrity’s entire fleet. While a four-night Caribbean cruise on Beyond starts at just $476 per person, an Iconic Suite on the same cruise will set you back at least $15,000.

Beyond also features Celebrity’s newest room category: AquaClass . These wellness-centered suites include complimentary access to the spa’s hammam (Turkish bath), crystalarium and float room , where guests can “float” in meditative bliss while swinging in basket chairs suspended from the ceiling. (There’s also a salt room and even a space carved out for rainfall water therapy.)

Alluring onboard experiences

What Beyond lacks in waterslides and splash pads it more than makes up for with cantilevered plunge pools and two-story hot tubs in the shape of giant martini glasses on the Resort Deck . The ship’s art is just as eye-catching. For starters, the 75-foot-long (24-yard) main pool fronts a life-size sculpture of a man attempting to balance an elephant on his back. Then there are the NFTs . Beyond is the line's first ship to showcase, and sell, digital masterpieces by the award-winning visual artist Rubem Robierb .

Of course, Beyond also features your cruise ship staples, albeit elevated. It’s the first ship to have boutiques from luxury brands like Stella McCartney, Marni  and La Maison du Chocolat. There’s also a Vegas-style casino , state-of-the-art fitness center – the first to offer F45  high-intensity group workouts at sea – and a rooftop garden with enough plants to warrant having a full-time botanist on board.

Exclusive spaces

If the common areas are too common, passengers willing to pay a little more can retreat to The Retreat . Beyond’s resort-within-a-resort concept boasts its own lounge, restaurant, pool and two-story sundeck – all exclusive spaces reserved for Retreat guests.

Still, the ship’s real VIP is Bug Naked, Captain Kate’s elusive elf sphynx. This hairless, faithful feline (who has more than 59,000 faithful Instagram followers of his own) has sailed by her side for years. Forget Biles and Paltrow; he’s Beyond’s biggest asset. On ships, cats – even black ones – are considered to bring good luck.

celebrity cruise line largest ship

Celebrity Cruises launches its biggest Cruise ship ever.

At 140,600 tons, Celebrity Beyond is the largest ship the “Modern Luxury” cruise line has ever sailed. And while Beyond looks like her sister ships Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex , she builds on their success. At 1073 feet in length, she’s been expanded to carry 3,260 guests in 1646 staterooms and suites.

She kept the most popular and eye-catching feature of them all—The Magic Carpet that is cantilevered off her port side. But Beyond gained an extra deck and added restaurants, bars and lounges that now number 32. And while she’s Celebrity ’s largest ship ever, she is only the 65th largest ship in the world and practically intimate compared to much of the competition.

Celebrity Beyond expands its Suite Offerings and The Retreat

The extraordinary popularity of its ‘ship within a ship’ accommodations atop the ship means these suites are often the first to be booked. So under the continued guidance of British designer, Kelly Hoppen CBE, The Retreat . as it is called, has been enlarged.

There’s even a new category of “Aqua Class” suites , an outgrowth of the popular “Aqua Class” staterooms on every ship in the fleet. “Aqua Class” suite guests can choose between the popular “Blu” restaurant for breakfast or dinner or the Retreat’s own restaurant “Luminae” . The Retreat also offer a lounge strictly for suite passengers. And then there’s the Retreat Sundeck . On Celebrity Beyond , it too has grown by some 40 percent.

Iconic Suite on Beyond

Iconic Suite on Beyond

It’s now two stories for sunning and swimming and simply relaxing. All suite guests enjoy extra luxury, services and amenities. But nothing can be compared to the two Iconic Suites . They’re the largest suites in Celebrity ’s entire fleet. They offer 2500 square feet of pure luxury—almost 1900 square feet indoors and another 689 square feet of terrace. Perched over the bow, they have a view that rivals the Captain’s Own. With their own private hot tub, there’s practically no reason to ever leave your suite. But then you’d miss all the goings-on all over Beyond .

Step out onto the Resort Deck

This glorious space truly understands why so many people love to cruise. Not only does it include two swimming pools, but there’s also a living garden and two additional float pools that are cantilevered over the ocean. The Main Swimming Pool is surrounded by terraces all of which give ocean views to virtually every lounge chair.

Outdoor Pool

Outdoor Pool

The Solarium is an Adults-Only sanctuary with both pool and hot tubs. The dome guarantees the Solarium can be used in every kind of weather and its loungers are perfect for reading a book or sneaking an afternoon nap. There’s even a Café and Juice Bar so you’ll never be hungry or thirsty.

Solarium Pool

Meanwhile back outside and towards the rear of the ship is the Roof Garden . Designed by British architect Tom Wright it debuted on Edge and once again appears on Beyond . Expect to be entertained with live musical performances, movies and prism light shows here. Go all the way to the stern for the Sunset Bar . The brainchild of designer Nate Berkus, it’s an oasis of comfortable seating, imaginative cocktails and a great place to watch the sun whether it’s setting or not.

Below there are 6 decks of phenomenal staterooms

Celebrity Edge introduced the Infinite Veranda to cruisers. They make the space 23 percent larger than on the 5 Celebrity Solstice class ships. At the flick of switch, half of the wall of windows facing the ocean, opens up. For those who love the sea air, the whole cabin can be filled with it. Or you can opt to close the stateroom off with the opaque glass doors and step outside. All staterooms are incredibly comfortable. The beds feature King-sized mattresses and the linens provided are “Celebrity eXhale Bedding”, pure luxury to the touch.

Edge Stateroom with Infinite Veranda

Edge Stateroom with Infinite Veranda

There’s a large screen television with an extensive library of programming. Particularly impressive is how many of its channels offer live programming. Each room has a mini-fridge, ample room for the over-packers among us and a nice little sitting area. The bathrooms are stunning examples of ingenuity and design.

The Activities list aboard Beyond begins at 7 am and goes straight through to 2 am.

We counted 82 activities ranging from Fitness to a Watchmaking Demonstration to a Magician who held forth in the immense Theater in a single day aboard Beyond . There’s a big emphasis on Wellness both in the superb spa and the gym. Beyond even has Gwyneth Paltrow as its “Well-being Advisor”.

The Casino

The Casino opens at 9 am on sea days and closes shop at whenever. There are endless opportunities to dance starting at 11 in the morning and wrapping up at The Club at 2 am. And Shop till you drop! There’s an extraordinary collection of high-end retailers including both Cartier and Bulgari. There’s even a mini Apple store. One of my fellow passengers pointed out the allure of not paying sales tax on a single thing whether it’s an Apple watch or a Cartier tank.

And then there’s the Food…

You’ll never go hungry on a cruise ship but be prepared for the splendid quality of what’s on offer on Celebrity Beyond. There are no less than 18 ‘food experiences’ to be enjoyed. (We’ll get to the 14 Cafes, Bars and Lounge soon). The Main Restaurant has been done away with as on Edge. Instead every passenger on the ship can choose a Cuisine and head to the restaurant of their choice. Tuscan is Italian, Normandie is French, Cyprus is Greek and Cosmopolitan is “New American”. There’s a set menu at all four spots. But we found the specialties of each of these beautiful rooms led to wonderful meals.

There are another four “ Casual Dining ” spots open to all and they are scattered about the ship. Of particular note is the almost always open Ocean View Café . It’s an international food festival where you can find Coffee, Tea and Juices 24 hours a day, a Pizza, Pasta and Salad Bar open 13 hours a day, Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt 10 hours a day and if you’re still feeling peckish at 10 pm, you still have three hours to get there for late night ‘snack’.

Stepping up to the Specialty Restaurants…

There are 8 Restaurants aboard Beyond that add a surcharge when you dine there. All of them offer an elevated dining experience. “ Dinner on the Edge ” is particularly elevated. It’s the offering on the ship’s cantilevered Magic Carpet. More down to earth experiences include Fine Cut , a truly great ocean-going steak house and Eden , which has an open kitchen and fabulous views over the wake.

Eden Restaurant

Le Grand Bistro is an amazing experience not only for the food but for the animated “Petit Chef” who comes to life on your table top. But the top of the line is “ Le Voyage ”. This wonderfully intimate dining room is the first sea-going restaurant from Chef Daniel Boulud. The Chef is Celebrity ’s Global Culinary Ambassador. He had created dishes for both Luminae and The Chef’s Table. But this is the restaurant he put his name on. Every dish confirms Chef Boulud’s star in the Culinary Universe.

About those 14 Café’s, Bars and Lounges…

Just as you’ll never go hungry, you’ll never go thirsty on Beyond . It should come as no surprise to learn that The Martini Bar popularized on Edge and Apex is bigger on Beyond . It’s bang in the middle of ship rising from Deck 3 all the way to Deck 5. It is truly the center of the ship and a very popular place. The Bartenders preside over a menu of martinis and an amazing “Juggling Act” involving bottles and martini glasses that simply has to be seen to be believed. It’s a regular occurrence twice an evening and should not be missed.

World Class Bar

World Class Bar

Craft Social Bar is the place for Craft Beers. The Mast Bar provides drinks on the Pool deck. The World Class Bar trades in truly superb mixed drinks. And non-alcoholic Specialty Coffees and pastries are yours at Café al Bacio .

Meet the woman behind Celebrity and Beyond

Lisa Lutoff-Perlo has been in the cruise industry for 35 years. It came as no surprise when she was named CEO of Celebrity Cruises in 2016. Her accomplishments are legendary. She is responsible for Celebrity ’s having grown the percentage of women on the bridge of Celebrity’s fleet from 3 percent to 27 percent in just the last four years.

The most visible sign of this progress is “ Captain Kate ”, Kate McCue who is the Master of Celebrity Beyond. She is the first American woman to ever Captain a Cruise ship. But it is Lisa’s mission to boost diversity and equity everywhere that is so praise worthy. On our voyage on Beyond , we were together with any number of guests with physical disabilities. This was an outreach Ms. Lutoff-Perlo was responsible for. She is intent on inclusiveness that goes beyond women, people of color, LGBT people. She had reached out to a severely war-wounded Press Photographer to create a gallery of phenomenal images of the marginalized people of every nationality and disability. She is truly a leader who makes this world a better place.

12 of the best Celebrity cruise ships

Uber-stylish designs by kelly hoppen and a “magic carpet” are among the head-turning features you’ll find on a celebrity cruise.

The top deck of Celebrity Edge

W hen it comes to innovative design details, Celebrity Cruises stands out from the crowd. The line’s modern ships resemble floating resorts. The funnels of all the oceangoing ships are marked with a large X to designate the Greek letter chi, representing the first two letters of the company’s founding Chandris family. Ships come in four types — Edge, Solstice, Millennium and Galapagos — and sail to more than 300 destinations around the globe.

Celebrity is known for its design-led ships, and the newest and biggest Edge-class vessels, which carry up to 3,620 passengers, are well suited to solo travellers, couples and groups of friends. While all ships have the Camp at Sea children’s club, the Edge vessels are best for families with older children and teens. The five Solstice-class vessels, also carrying more than 3,000 passengers each, are the largest group in the fleet and sail to the most destinations — but if you prefer a more intimate environment, look at the older Millennium ships, carrying fewer than 3,000 guests, or the trio of small Galapagos yacht-style vessels. I love Celebrity Apex for its whimsical design details such as the pink ostrich-feather “trees”, yellow chairs shaped like giant flowers and a walk-through art installation resembling a hall of mirrors filled with white sculptures. Here are 12 of the best Celebrity ships.

1. Celebrity Edge

celebrity cruise line largest ship

Living up to its name, this cutting-edge ship was one of a kind when it launched in 2018. The standout feature is the “Magic Carpet”, which was originally conceived as a platform for passengers to get on and off tenders before the designers realised it could be put to other uses. Surrounded by glass on three sides and moving to different decks on the side of the ship, it is variously used as a bar, lounge, extension to the Raw seafood restaurant and venue for extra-special dinners — usually held once or twice on each sailing.

2. celebrity flora.

celebrity cruise line largest ship

Launched in 2019, and the newest of the trio of Celebrity ships based in the Galapagos Islands, Celebrity Flora is very different from the line’s mainstream ocean vessels. Designed to sail in one of the world’s most incredible destinations, the 100-passenger Flora has a team of naturalists leading excursions to see the region’s unique giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, iguanas and much more. It’s one of the most luxurious ships in the Galapagos as all rooms are suites, with two swish penthouse rooms spanning the width of the vessel.

3. Celebrity Reflection

celebrity cruise line largest ship

Carrying 3,046 passengers, Celebrity Reflection is the biggest of the five Solstice-class ships. Based in the Caribbean, Reflection is sailing on three and four-night short-break cruises from Fort Lauderdale, featuring Perfect Day at CocoCay, the private island resort in the Bahamas owned by parent company Royal Caribbean. This is a great option if you want to add a cruise to a land stay in Miami , which is only a 30-minute drive away. CocoCay has everything from chill-out beaches to an adrenaline-pumping waterpark with North America’s highest waterslide.

4. Celebrity Ascent

celebrity cruise line largest ship

The fourth and final Edge-class ship has been shaped by a team of land-based interior designers including Britain’s Tom Wright, best-known for Dubai’s landmark Burj Al Arab hotel. Accommodation includes clever Infinite Veranda cabins — first introduced on Celebrity Edge — where the floor-to-ceiling window lowers halfway to create the feeling of a balcony inside the cabin and maximises the use of space. Celebrity Ascent has the widest range of rooms in the fleet, including balcony cabins for solo travellers (a rarity on most cruise ships).

5. Celebrity Solstice

celebrity cruise line largest ship

While it has been eclipsed by many other ships since, Celebrity’s first Solstice-class vessel was the largest ship built at a German shipyard when it launched in 2008, weighing in at 122,000 gross tons. The 2,850-passenger Celebrity Solstice was also the first to feature the Lawn Club — and to this day Celebrity is the only line where you can sink your toes into half an acre of real grass at sea. The lawn — also on Celebrity Eclipse, Equinox, Silhouette and Reflection — is the perfect spot to play deck games, catch some live jazz or simply soak up the sun with a picnic.

6. Celebrity Millennium

celebrity cruise line largest ship

Launched in 2000 — as the name implies — Celebrity Millennium is the namesake ship in the Millennium class and the oldest in the fleet. However, don’t be put off, as the 2,218-passenger ship, known as Millie to fans, had a bow-to-stern makeover in 2019 and looks fresher than other ships of a similar vintage. Celebrity Millennium is based in Asia, with itineraries including Japan ’s cherry blossom and a popular 12-night round-trip Tokyo voyage that visits Mount Fuji, with an optional excursion to bathe in thermal springs.

7. Celebrity Silhouette

celebrity cruise line largest ship

This is another vessel that underwent a major facelift as part of the multi-million Celebrity Revolution refurbishment programme. In 2020 the Solstice-class ship emerged from dry dock with shiny new features, including updated cabins, restaurants and the cool and casual Craft Social Bar serving artisan beers and cocktails, all of which belie the 2011 launch date. As well as sailing in the Caribbean , Celebrity Silhouette can be found closer to home on cruises to Scandinavia, the Mediterranean and British Isles.

8. Celebrity Equinox

celebrity cruise line largest ship

Forget cookery classes and try a very different hands-on experience: a hot-glass class on Celebrity Equinox. Earn some bragging rights and go home with a unique souvenir from the glassblowing studio where you’ll craft a sparkling piece of art, such as a starfish, bowl or vase. Once your masterpiece has cooled it will be carefully wrapped up to take home. Glass studios are also on Celebrity Solstice and Eclipse. Also on Equinox, the lawn area plays host to live concerts — complete with glow sticks and a pop-up bar — and films under the stars.

9. Celebrity Apex

celebrity cruise line largest ship

You don’t have to get on a plane to experience Celebrity’s Edge-class ships. From May to November 2024, Celebrity Apex is coming to UK shores for the first time. Sailing out of Southampton, journeys include sailings to the Mediterranean and a new 12-night itinerary to the fjords of Norway and the Arctic Circle. Soak up the views from Eden, a three-storey entertainment, dining, bar and lounge space with floor-to-ceiling windows, where tempting cocktails include Forbidden — served in a glass apple. Eden can be found on all the Edge ships.

• Best cruises from Southampton

10. Celebrity Constellation

celebrity cruise line largest ship

The fourth ship in Celebrity’s Millennium Class, “Connie” was launched in 2002. It’s one of the vessels where you can savour one of the most enchanting dining experiences at sea. In Le Petit Chef, the adventures of a tiny animated cook and his sidekicks are projected onto the table and plate as he prepares your meal from different ingredients. When he’s finished each course, waiters replace the cartoon food with the real thing. Le Petit Chef, which costs extra, can be found on Celebrity Ascent, Apex, Beyond, Eclipse, Edge, Equinox, Infinity, Millennium, Reflection, Silhouette, Solstice and Summit.

11. Celebrity Beyond

celebrity cruise line largest ship

If you’re a sun-worshipper and want to splash out on a suite then this Edge-class ship and its identical twin Ascent have the largest private sun decks. They’re 40 per cent larger than the ones on the earlier ships Edge and Apex. Access to the sun deck is among the perks for passengers booking the Retreat packages, which also include a lounge with complimentary drinks and nibbles plus the option to dine in the elegant Luminae restaurant that’s exclusively for suite guests.

12. Celebrity Xploration

celebrity cruise line largest ship

This twin-hulled catamaran carries just 16 passengers and feels more intimate than the rest of the Celebrity fleet. Acquired by the line in 2016, it was given a top-to-toe refit to offer the Celebrity experience — including suites with balconies — albeit on a much smaller scale. There’s a cosy lounge where naturalist briefings take place, and a sun deck for whale-watching, relaxing by day and stargazing at night. With its intimate atmosphere, Celebrity Xploration is an ideal way for families and groups of friends to explore the Galapagos.

celebrity cruise line largest ship

Celebrity Cruises maiden ship in its new Solstice Class departed Meyer Werft shipyard yesterday in Papenburg, Germany.  The Celebrity Solstice , at length of just over 1,000 ft., is the largest cruise ship by Celebrity Cruises and from the looks of it, just getting it out of port was no easy task.

The Celebrity Solstice is the first of five ships in Celebrity Cruises’ Solstice Class: a class of ships that will offer “floating worlds of aesthetic and experiential perfection, where every detail is attended to and every guest is pampered,” according to Celebrity Cruises .

Celebrity Solstice will offer a range of amenities, never before seen on any other cruise ships.  MarketWatch.com provides us with this list :

  • The industry’s first Hot Glass Show, with live glassblowing demonstrations presented in association with The Corning Museum of Glass.
  • Larger staterooms, with design inspirations offered by a panel of five women, hand-picked for their unique travel and hospitality insights.
  • 10 varied restaurants, ranging from the dramatic, two-level “Grand Epernay” main dining room with a sweeping wine tower, to four exquisite specialty restaurants, to several stylish, casual venues.
  • An entirely new category of accommodations, “AquaClass,” designed to offer a spa vacation experience at sea rivaling the best of those on land.
  • A state-of-the-art theater and stage design, with three new leading- edge shows custom-designed for Celebrity with Poet Theatricals, in their first cruise line partnership.

Next Celebrity Cruises ship will be its biggest ever

Gene Sloan

Celebrity Cruises is going bigger with its next vessel.

The Miami-based line on April 28 revealed that its soon-to-debut Celebrity Beyond would be a stretched version of its recently unveiled Edge Class ships , Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Edge -- the current size leaders in the Celebrity fleet.

Specifically, the third vessel in the Edge Class series will be 20 meters longer than its two sister ships, and a deck taller, too, the chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, Richard Fain, told cruise writers on Wednesday during a conference call on Zoom.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter

Royal Caribbean Group is the parent company of Celebrity Cruises as well as Royal Caribbean and Silversea .

The extra length and height of Celebrity Beyond will allow for new and bigger venues, Fain and other executives on the conference call said.

Fain said the extra space would particularly contribute to a feeling of spaciousness in an expanded "resort-within-a-resort" area for suite passengers called The Retreat. Among the highlights of the area will be a new two-story sundeck with hot tubs, lounge chairs and private cabanas that will be open exclusively to passengers staying in suites.

celebrity cruise line largest ship

"When people think about a stretch, they think about making the ship longer," Fain said. "But a lot of what we were focused on ... was lifting (the spaces) up, particularly in the suite section, to give ... more feeling of openness and more feeling of height and spaciousness."

During the hour-long conference call, Fain and several other Royal Caribbean Group and Celebrity Cruises executives as well as outside designers involved with the plans offered details of what would be different on Celebrity Beyond as compared to Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Edge.

Among key differences they cited was a greatly expanded Sunset Bar at the back of the vessel that would sprawl over multiple levels and have a new, Morocco-inspired design created by celebrity interior designer Nate Berkus (co-star of TLC's "Nate & Jeremiah by Design").

The Sunset Bar on Celebrity Beyond will be nearly twice as big as the Sunset Bar areas on the previous Edge Class ships and feature more conversation niches and covered enclaves.

celebrity cruise line largest ship

The plant-filled Rooftop Garden area found on Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Edge also has been redesigned with increased seating, new private nooks and two new floating pools cantilevered over the side of the ship.

Designed for lounging, dining (it's home to an outdoor grill), live music and movie-watching, the Rooftop Garden on Celebrity Beyond will be about 20% larger than the Rooftop Gardens on Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Edge.

Another area that will be bigger on Celebrity Beyond and feature some design changes is the three-deck-high Grand Plaza. The ship's main pool area, known as the Resort Deck, also is getting some updates.

celebrity cruise line largest ship

Celebrity Beyond also will be the first cruise ship with a restaurant created by Daniel Boulud, the famed New York chef. To be called Le Voyage, the 50-seat, upscale eatery will have a menu inspired by the idea of travel, said the France-born Boulud, who also attended the Zoom call.

"As a young chef I always dreamed to travel, and Le Voyage means traveling all over the world, and taking a food journey," Boulud said. "The (dishes) will not be always targeting to a city or place but more to a cuisine, and to its expression through the tradition of that cuisine."

Celebrity Beyond also will have 179 more cabins than its sister vessels, which each have 1,467 cabins. That's about a 12% increase.

As a result, Celebrity Beyond will hold 3,260 passengers at double occupancy. That's up from a 2,910 passenger capacity at double occupancy for Celebrity Apex and a 2,918 passenger capacity at double occupancy for Celebrity Edge.

celebrity cruise line largest ship

Several of the new or expanded areas of the ship including The Retreat, the Rooftop Garden and the Resort Deck feature designs created by noted British designer Kelly Hoppen. Noted architect Tom Wright (creator of Dubai's Burj Al Arab Hotel) and French design firm Jouin Manku (creators of the Jules Verne restaurant in the Eiffel Tower) also had a hand in many of the spaces.

During the conference call, Celebrity CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo said Celebrity Beyond would debut in almost exactly a year, on April 27, 2022. Its maiden voyage will be a 10-night Western Europe sailing from Southampton in the U.K., she said.

After its first sailing, Celebrity Beyond will move to the Mediterranean for a series of voyages that include nine-night trips to ports in Italy and France, and 10-night trips to the Greek Islands. In October 2022, the vessel will reposition to Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades for winter sailings to the Caribbean.

Celebrity Beyond currently is under construction at the giant Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France. The shipyard also built Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Edge and is in the midst of building a Royal Caribbean ship that will be the biggest cruise vessel ever .

The 6 best cruise ship waterslides and watery fun zones

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Call it the Battle of the Waterslides.

In the last few years, the big boys of the cruise industry — Royal Caribbean , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line — have been locked in a game of one-upmanship when it comes to waterslides and watery fun zones on vessels.

In addition to such over-the-top, new attractions as go-kart tracks and roller coasters , the brands behind the biggest megaresorts at sea have been packing the top decks of their vessels with even more over-the-top watery allures.

For more cruise guides, news and reviews, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Royal Caribbean, for instance, added an 800-foot-long “water coaster” to the back of its 3,386-passenger Navigator of the Seas just a few years ago. It’s one of more than two dozen giant waterslides the line has added to more than half a dozen ships in the last seven years.

Royal Caribbean also plans a record six waterslides on its next new ship, Icon of the Seas, which is scheduled to debut in January 2024.

But as recently as early 2016, Royal Caribbean didn’t have a single waterslide on any of its vessels.

MSC Cruises also has gone big with giant water parks in the past seven years, with as many as four waterslides on more than half a dozen of its newest vessels. Norwegian has loaded up its most recent ships with giant water parks, too — some have as many as five waterslides!

Not to be outdone, Carnival, an early adopter of waterslides on ships, has added sprawling water park areas with multiple waterslides to almost every vessel in its fleet.

A brief history of water attractions at sea

In the beginning, there was the pool. As watery cruise ship attractions go, it has long been the staple — something found on nearly every cruise vessel going back to the 1970s.

But as early as 1978, at least one line was spicing up its Lido decks with a little waterslide fun — little being the operative word. That’s the year Carnival added a single slide into the pool on its 728-passenger Festivale — a slide so small it’s now hilarious to think it was touted as an attraction.

Often cited as the first waterslide ever on a cruise vessel, the Festivale slide was of a sort that was found at backyard pools at the time. The cruise industry was still in its infancy, of course, and ships were orders of magnitude smaller than they are today. Festivale measured just 32,697 tons, about one-seventh the size of today’s biggest cruise vessels.

Carnival, the so-called Fun Ship line, would go on to become the early leader in waterslides at sea. The 2,056-passenger Carnival Fantasy, which debuted in 1990, was the first cruise ship with a significant waterslide. It measured 115 feet in length.

Related: A beginner’s guide to picking a cruise line

Just six years later, in 1996, Carnival would make news with the unveiling of a 214-foot-long corkscrew waterslide on what then was called Destiny. (The ship currently sails as the Carnival Sunshine after being rebuilt in 2013.) At the time, Destiny was the biggest cruise ship in the world.

In more recent years, Carnival has gone into waterslide-building overdrive. The line has added full-blown water park areas with waterslides, watery play zones and other features to all but four of its 25 ships. All but one of Carnival’s ships (Carnival Luminosa) now have at least one waterslide.

One of the Carnival water parks, on the line’s 5-year-old Carnival Horizon, even has Disney-style theming revolving around Dr. Seuss characters.

Norwegian, MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean only began going big with waterslides on ships in the past decade or so. Many of the newest vessels from the brands have massive water park areas. Some of the brands are retrofitting big waterslides onto older ships, too.

Additionally, family-focused Disney Cruise Line now has major water attractions on all its vessels.

Where you’ll find the biggest waterslides at sea

If your idea of the perfect cruise ship is one loaded to the gills with waterslides and watery fun zones (plus all sorts of other over-the-top attractions), you’ll want to stick to the biggest floating megaresorts operated by Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC Cruises and Carnival.

At Royal Caribbean, that means the giant Oasis-class vessels , which include Wonder of the Seas — the world’s largest cruise ship. At Norwegian, you’ll find the biggest waterslides and water parks on the line’s relatively recently built Breakaway Plus-, Breakaway- and Epic-class ships. At MSC Cruises, the new Seaside-, Meraviglia-, Meraviglia Plus- and World-class vessels have the line’s big water parks.

Big lines that have steered clear of the water-park-at-sea trend include Princess Cruises, Holland America and Celebrity Cruises. Geared more toward couples than families and typically drawing an older demographic, all three of these lines have stuck to a more subdued feel for the outdoor areas of their ships. The top decks of vessels operated by Princess, Holland America and Celebrity still mostly revolve around traditional swimming areas with pools, hot tubs and lounge chairs.

Ready for a splashy, top-deck thrill? These are the most spectacular watery attractions at sea.

The Perfect Storm

Where you’ll find it: Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas.

This isn’t just one giant waterslide; it’s a whole complex of waterslides, each one among the most exciting you’ll find anywhere on the world’s oceans.

The Perfect Storm is found on four of Royal Caribbean’s massive Oasis-class vessels — Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas — as well as the smaller Liberty of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas. The complex includes two four-deck-high racer slides called Cyclone and Typhoon, where you can do side-by-side speed tests with your travel partner.

On the four Oasis-class ships, there’s also a third, Champagne bowl-style slide called Supercell. It’ll swirl you around a big basin before plummeting you “down the drain” into a plunge pool. On Liberty of the Seas, a third slide called The Tidal Wave sends you screaming down a steep hill on an inner tube to a nearly vertical incline. Zooming upward, topping out and dropping back, you’ll get a blissful moment of complete weightlessness.

Note that Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas also has a waterslide area called Perfect Storm — but it’s completely different. More on that in a moment.

The Blaster

Where you’ll find it: Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas.

The Blaster is the Big Daddy of waterslides at sea. At 800 feet, it’s the longest ever built on a cruise ship. Added to Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas in 2019, it’s a seemingly endless stretch of yellow and orange tubing that winds around the back deck of the vessel like a snake.

A true sight to behold, The Blaster is so long because it’s what’s known as a water coaster. It features water jets that propel you up, down and forward — extending the ride — as you careen around the ship’s basketball court and surfing simulator in an inner tube. At times, you go flying over the side of the ship, over open water (not that you have much time to take in the view).

Royal Caribbean has named the area on Navigator of the Seas where The Blaster is located the Perfect Storm — the same name used for waterslide areas on six other ships — but the area is completely different than what you’ll find on the other vessels. In addition to The Blaster, the Perfect Storm area on Navigator of the Seas includes a headfirst mat racer slide called Riptide — the first of its kind at sea.

Where you’ll find it: Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

Leave it to family-focused Disney Cruise Line to come up with the coolest watery family attraction at sea. AquaDuck is a water coaster, like The Blaster on Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas, and is found on Disney’s two Dream-class ships. But don’t expect anything too white-knuckle. The ride is relatively gentle by water park standards, mainly because it’s designed for kids of all ages (and their parents, who can ride along on inner tubes for two).

While AquaDuck is slightly shorter than The Blaster at 765 feet in length, it has a bigger presence, thanks to its prime location encircling the main pool area. If you’re lounging up top, it’s hard to miss the massive, clear acrylic tubing of the ride, which is held up by 46 giant white stilts.

In addition to AquaDuck, the two Disney ships with the attraction (Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream ) have a relatively small, kid-friendly waterslide next to the centrally located Mickey’s Pool. Dubbed Mickey’s Slide, it’s held up by a giant Mickey hand, which is delightful. Both ships also have a watery play zone for toddlers called Nemo’s Reef. Plus, Disney Fantasy has a watery fun zone with water jets, geysers and bubblers called AquaLab.

Note that Disney’s newest ship — Disney Wish — has a water coaster attraction similar to the AquaDuck called the AquaMouse. The big difference: Riders will see animated shorts while riding up the ramp at the start of the ride.

Carnival WaterWorks

Where you’ll find it: Nearly all Carnival ships.

When it comes to waterslides on ships, cruise giant Carnival is still the undisputed king. The Fun Ship line began adding them to vessels way back in 1978, and there’s now at least one waterslide on every ship in the Carnival fleet — something no other line can say.

Indeed, on all Carnival ships, there’s now not just a single waterslide but a whole water park area. Called WaterWorks, these areas vary in size and features from vessel to vessel, but they typically have one or two big waterslides, a watery play zone with interactive water features and a large continuously filling dump bucket that periodically soaks everybody within range.

You’ll typically find the biggest Carnival water park complexes on the newest Carnival ships, such as Mardi Gras , Celebration and Carnival Venezia . All three have three waterslides — one more than most Carnival ships.

Aqua Park (Norwegian Cruise Line)

Where you’ll find it: Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore.

Norwegian Cruise Line began going big with waterslides in 2010 when it debuted Norwegian Epic. And boy, did it go big! Norwegian Epic offers three monster waterslides, including the thrilling Epic Plunge — a 200-foot-long tube ride that ends in a swirling bowl. Epic Plunge is part of Norwegian Epic’s Aqua Park, the first water park on a Norwegian ship. Norwegian has since added Aqua Parks to six more new vessels, including its biggest ship, the 4-year-old Norwegian Encore .

Norwegian’s Aqua Parks vary in size and attractions from ship to ship, but some of them, such as the one on Norwegian Breakaway, have as many as five separate multistory waterslides. Yes, you read that right: Five waterslides on a single cruise ship!

On Norwegian Breakaway, the lineup includes twin free-fall slides that drop passengers nearly straight down several stories; two side-by-side twisting racer slides; and a family-friendly slide with a more modest drop. For sheer variety, the complex is hard to beat.

Aqua Park (MSC Cruises)

Where you’ll find it: MSC Seascape, MSC Seashore, MSC Seaview, MSC Seaside, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa, MSC Euribia, MSC World Europa.

Fast-growing MSC Cruises has joined the waterslide wars in the last few years — and in a massive way. Each of the 10 ships the line has unveiled since 2017 offers a full-blown water park on its top deck that’s packed with waterslides and other watery fun.

On North America-based MSC Seaside, the Aqua Park has four waterslides and a children’s play area with interactive water features. The waterslides include two massive, 525-foot-long dueling slides that extend over the sides of the ship. The top of the Aqua Park on MSC Seaside is also home to the liftoff point for a zip line that soars 344 feet across the top of the vessel.

Other MSC Cruises water parks at sea include the winter-themed Polar Aqua Park on MSC Meraviglia, which offers a suspended-in-the-sky ropes course in addition to four waterslides. There’s also the Aquaplay area for the little ones.

A handful of ships even have virtual reality waterslides that involve riders wearing virtual reality headsets as part of the experience.

In all, 14 of MSC Cruises’ 22 vessels now have at least one waterslide on their top decks.
