Do I need to provide food, drinks, or lodging for my driver?

Providing food and drink is not required. You will only need to provide lodging for the driver(s) if your reservation spans multiple days.

How much should I tip my driver?

We recommend tipping your driver(s) 10-20% of the total cost, in cash, if possible.

Are food and drinks allowed on the bus?

Yes. As long as you let your representative know ahead of time, food, drinks, and alcoholic beverages are all allowed on the bus. There is a $250 cleaning fee if a mess is made, however. 

Do you offer smaller, less expensive buses?

Yes. We have a list of buses ranging in size from 18-passenger to 56-passenger. We’ll find one that’s perfect for your group.

Do you charge per hour? Is there a minimum rental time?

Rates are charged per hour, with a 5-hour minimum for every trip.

Do I need to find parking for the bus?

No. Our operations team will secure parking and staging areas for the bus prior to your trip.

How often will my driver need to stop for a break?

Break schedules will be negotiated between you and your driver(s) prior to the trip; however, drivers can only legally drive for 10 consecutive hours before they must take an 8-hour required break.

Can I see the bus before my rental is finalized?

Yes. We can send pictures of your bus prior to your date upon request.

• The total cost of a charter bus rental varies, based on a number of criteria:
• How many people will be traveling—This dictates the size of your bus. As a general rule, the larger the bus, the greater the cost.
• The amenities you'll need—Most charter buses come with certain standard features, including Wifi, DVD players, stereo and PA systems and charging stations for your devices. The school buses, however, typically don't have these options and are less expensive. For additional amenities, such as an on-board bathroom, you'll typically pay a bit more.
• When and where you are traveling—The cost of a charter bus is typically more in the winter months in Florida than the summer months (there's greater demand). The opposite generally holds true in Northern climates. You will also typically pay more for a charter bus on Friday, Saturday and Sunday than other days of the week.

What To Know When You Compare Field Trip Charter Bus Quotes

• Make sure all companies quote your trip with the same miles. If you call to get a quote for your event but do not have an itinerary, we may add additional miles to get you back and forth to lunch or other locations we don’t know about yet. Because we charge by the day or the mile, whichever is greater, this sometimes increases the price. If we have an itinerary to quote from, we do not add miles beyond what you requested. However, sometimes our competitors will quote the price with no extra miles knowing they will be cheaper in the beginning even though they will charge you the extra miles once you return. Always make sure you are comparing “apples to apples.”
• Come look at the bus. We urge our customers to come by and take a look at the exact bus they will be traveling on. Be sure to do this regardless of what company you choose. If a company tells you a specific bus is on the road and they can’t give you a date when it will be back, be concerned. Looking at the bus before your trip is an acceptable request. We welcome visitors at any time. Also, if you do visit before your trip, make note of the plate number on the bus to assure you get the same one.
• Do you need Wi-Fi or 110-volt plugins? If so, make sure all companies provide these amenities when you book your charter.
• Driver hotel nights. If the trip will be overnight, ask charter companies to note whether the price includes/excludes the driver’s nightly hotel fee. This is often a big reason for a price difference.

Students headed towards Carowinds field trip injured in Gastonia bus collision on I-85

GASTONIA, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — Several children were injured in a wreck on I-85 in Gastonia involving two South Carolina school charter buses late Friday morning.

South Carolina’s Pickens County School District confirmed the buses were from its district and were occupied by 85 students from Gettys Middle School and included 6th-grade band students with 21 chaperones who were headed to Carowinds on a field trip.

Gaston Emergency Medical Services reported that two charter buses collided near Exit 19 and one bus had 50 kids on it with five injured and the other had 51 kids with three injured, all with minor injuries.

Police said the driver of one of the buses that crashed into the woods was transported to the hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries. The district later said the driver was not a school employee. The District later said the five students were complaining of soreness and were transported to an area medical center alongside a teacher.

One lane was closed and Gaston Emergency Medical Services and fire trucks were at the scene.

District officials said more buses were headed to the scene to pick up the rest of the students.

Queen City News has a crew on scene and is working to learn more details.

The district also sent us the following statement.

The accident involved one charter bus colliding with the second bus. The accident occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m. There were 85 students and 21 chaperones on the buses. 106 total riders.

Emergency medical teams arrived and assisted individuals as needed. After assessing all the individuals, five students and one driver were transported for further medical attention or to be assessed for minor injuries.  

We have notified parents and guardians of students involved in the accident. 

We are relieved that there were no serious injuries and we are thankful for the prompt response of the Gaston County Emergency Services and law enforcement.

Valley schools seek route out of shortage of bus drivers.

Local schools in Mahoning and Trumbull County are experiencing bus driver shortages.

These shortages are causing longer routes, canceled or suspended routes and trouble transporting students to field trips and athletic competitions.

Among school systems experiencing challenges due to bus driver shortages is Mathews Local School District. Superintendent Russel McQuaide said he and the Mathews Board of Education recently developed a contract with Ohio Developmental Supports Transportation.

“We’re all experiencing bus driver shortages, and we’re doing OK except (for) some of our field trips so ODS will help us with trips that (our bus drivers can’t),” McQuaide said.

McQuaide said he also struggles with some athletic transportation.

He said Mathews has only six staffed bus drivers, one of whom is part-time.

“It’s challenging to fill those positions,” McQuaide said. “There’s a lot of training that goes natural to the position. To get drivers is sometimes a bit of an obstacle because of the training requirements.”

EDUCATIONAL SERVICE CENTER OF EASTERN OHIO

Superintendent Traci Hostetler said she works with various school districts in Mahoning County.

“Every single district I’ve worked with in Mahoning County would welcome bus drivers,” Hostetler said. “Schools are spending a lot of time trying to figure out how to get kids to school in a timely fashion.”

She said schools are lacking bus drivers and bus driver substitutes, resulting in route combinations.

“They might be combining two routes into one bus now and (that) just (means) longer times on the road to accommodate for less bus drivers,” Hostetler said.

Hostetler also said part of the cause for this is due to public schools being required to provide transportation for private and charter schools.

“What we’re advocating for is for private and charter schools to provide their own transportation and for public schools to transport their own students,” she said. “Every school receiving public funds should be transporting their own students and that would help tremendously with public school busing.”

LIBERTY LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT

Superintendent Debra Mettee said Liberty Local Schools are also experiencing a shortage of bus drivers.

“It is an issue for us because we don’t have substitutes available if one of our drivers (calls off),” Mettee said. “We’ve had a couple of times this year we had to cancel routes. Earlier in the year we had to suspend a couple routes because there was no one.”

She said at Liberty they do “a lot of transportation for the Jewish Community Center, field trips (and) all of the athletic events.”

“Our drivers drive all those trips, and the JCC has a lot of issues and would like us to transport. They pay us,” Mettee said. “We do transport to the Career Center (Trumbull Career and Technical Center) and we also take a student to the Mahoning County Career Center (Mahoning County Career and Technical Center).”

Mettee said they have made it due to having “excellent staff with perfect attendance,” and by combining routes.

“Our bus supervisor does an excellent job balancing this,” she said. “We are always looking for bus drivers. We need bus drivers to take those extra routes.”

WARREN CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT

John Lacy, executive director of business operations, said recruiting drivers is a challenge.

“We’re better than what we were during the peak of COVID-19,” Lacy said. “We could still use three or four more drivers.”

He said despite needing bus drivers, they haven’t had any trouble making routes or extracurricular activities due to their partnership with Community Bus Services Inc.

“We have a contract with Community Bus Services, where they will send us substitute drivers if we need them but they are also having trouble staffing (their buses),” Lacy said. “We probably need two or three (substitutes) per day.”
