Sgriob- ruadh; (skrib-rooah)

Sgriob-ruadh dairy farm and distillery cheese and spirit one herd of cows.

A resourceful, family-run dairy farm on the Isle of Mull — producing 100% sustainable energy to create award-winning cheese and spirit, all from our own cows' milk and welcoming visitors all year round.

Sgriob-ruadh Farm has grown from a few dilapidated sheds and a dream into our family's cherished home and an ever-evolving business.

We've been dairy farming for 50+ years and making cheese for over four decades — there's more to come, too.

Powered by renewable energy and a 'do it ourselves' attitude, we've got lots to share, and there's no better place to do it than the beautiful Isle of Mull in Scotland's Inner Hebrides.

1985 isle of mull

Three generations, and counting.

The Reade family started farming in Somerset in 1963. The dream was to live in Scotland and produce milk for Tobermory and the surrounding islands. Cheesemaking goes hand in hand with selling liquid milk to be manageable and sustainable.

A beautiful dilapidated ruin was found on Mull. The family worked together to create the business from from the ground up.

This typifies the kind of resourceful approach we pride ourselves on — an approach that has been very necessary for success when living on Mull, where access to technicians, engineers and other services can be a little patchy.

Three generations of the Reade family are now actively involved in Sgriob-ruadh farm and the various businesses that have sprung from it, and it makes us so proud to continue into the future as a collection of family-run businesses, producing great food and drink that people enjoy across the world.

Sgriob-ruadh farm is now owned and run by Garth, Brendan and Shelagh, watched over by Chris. Since arriving in these parts in 1979, the clan has expanded and put down further roots. Our family live and work across the island, from the local doctor's surgery, to the beach at Calgary to the biscuit company established by Joe — Island Bakery.

It takes a hard-working team effort to make everything happen as it should on Sgriob-ruadh Farm, and we don't rest on our laurels either — we're always looking for ways to improve what we do, make better food & drink, and do it more sustainably.

Welcome to the

St Andrews Farmhouse

Cheese company, the home of award winning cheese.

How did it all begin?

Of course, it all begins with the top quality raw milk produced by our home bred herd of Friesian Holstein cows which contentedly graze all summer long amongst the lush pastures overlooking the Firth of Forth in our beautiful corner of the East Neuk of Fife.

Farmers, by the very nature of the job that they do, are stewards of the land and they have an almost subconscious sense of responsibility for the environment and the importance of ‘giving something back’. Skills and traditions are passed down through the generations, and each generation adds their own threads to the colourful tapestry that is the landscape we love.

I don’t, however, know anyone who left school with the ambition to be a cheesemaker – most people lead other lives and ‘fall into’ cheesemaking by accident or circumstance. Cheesemaking is one third recipe, one third manual labour (no need for gym membership if you are a cheesemaker!) and one third cleaning. These key elements, along with a generous measure of passion, contribute to a final product full of character and taste.

The development of our cheese recipes – and taking these cheeses to market – has been a brave and innovative development for our farming business. We hope that you enjoy this unique taste of Fife.

Cheesemaking is not a ‘spectator sport’!

It all begins for us after a ‘crash course’ in Wales, where I stayed with Leon and Joan Downey for a week, helping to make their award winning Llangloffan Cheese. Loan showed me the basics – and who could have failed to be inspired by his enthusiasm.

LANARK BLUE

cheese factory tour scotland

We are a small, family-run farm and cheese company started by Humphrey Errington in the early 1980’s.

We farm as extensively and naturally as possible, our sheep lamb early in the year and dry off at the end of August, they are fed on a grass based diet with the addition of parlour nuts during milking. The Goats kid several times a year so we are able to produce goats milk cheese all year round.

OUR HISTORY

We moved from Dumfriesshire to Lanarkshire in 1981, running as a mixed farming enterprise of beef cattle and sheep. My Father Humphrey Errington started looking at ways of diversifying and became interested in sheep milking and ewes milk cheese because of the ancient tradition of this activity in the upper Clyde area, and because it offered the chance to add value to the farm product and be free of dependence on government subsidies.

Cheese making began in 1983 on a small scale and now the farming enterprise is geared to the need for ewes’ milk in order to keep up with the growing demand for the cheese. Because the sheep milking in the winter months is not a practical possibility in Scotland, in the late 1980’s we began buying in cows’ milk to keep us busy in the winter. This inaugurated the range of cows’ milk cheeses, still of traditional local types.

Isle of Arran Cheese Shops & Tasting

The humble Isle of Arran sits in the Firth of Clyde and is often called “Scotland in Miniature”. It has all of Scotland’s expansive natural landscapes distilled into one beautiful Isle! In fact, not only can you see the best of the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland, but you can also enjoy cultural food and drinks in one place.

Arran Cheese Tasting is quite famous for turophiles coming to the Isle, and Arran Cheeses offers an excellent selection of Scottish cheeses that family cheesemongers have created for generations. Here are the prominent cheeses you can try on the Isle of Arran and where you can enjoy them!

In This Post

Prominent Cheeses on the Isle of Arran

From cheddars that have been smoked slowly to cheese imbued with crushed herbs and chives, the Isle of Arran is home to some of the finest cheeses you can look forward to during your holiday visit to Scotland. Here are some Isle of Arran cheeses that you should take advantage of.

Arran Camembert

This local twist on the famed Camemberet is not only delicious but an affordable semi-soft cheese that’s been allowed to ripen for at least 3 weeks. The characteristic firm yet soft camembert cheese offers a sweet yet vicious creamy cheese that will complement your picnic lunch or sandwich wherever you go!

Arran Blue Cheese

Blue cheese isn’t for everybody, but a well-made Arran Blue Cheese is enough to get even the newest cheese lovers on board. Arran Blue Cheese is a young blue cheese, giving it an approachable taste while also maintaining the flavours that make Blue Cheese so famous.

This particular blue cheese won Best Scottish Cheese for 2018 and 2019 thanks to its creamy texture made from vegetarian rennet and pasteurised cow’s milk.

Arran Cheddar Cheese

Arran Cheddar Cheese is a very versatile cheese that comes in various excellent flavours that will appeal to cheese lovers coming to the Isle. Everything from oak-smoked cheddar cheese, Arran whisky cheese, and even cheddar mixed with the finest herbs is available from local vendors.

Arran Cheese Shop

Just North of Brodick is the most popular cheese shop on the Isle, the Isle of Arran Cheese Shop. Many of the flavoured cheddars we’ve mentioned are made by this artisan shop, which has over 20 years of crafting delicious cheeses using local ingredients.

Oak-smoked cheddar, claret cheddar cheese, and even garlic chilli cheddars are yours to enjoy, along with all the local staples that make the Isle of Arran a haven for cheese lovers. Take advantage of this local cheese shop packed with flavour – a home farm that’s been on the Isle of Arran since 1991.

The Old Pier Tearoom

Another major attraction in the Isle of Arran is the town of Lamlash, which offers a splendid place to look out to the Firth of Clyde and a perfect place to pick up an Arran gift box of cheese or other artisanal goods. The Old Pier Tearoom offers great service, food, and a stunning view over Lamlash’s pretty harbour.

Why is this on a list of cheeses? Well, from pies, pizzas, and other delicious treats, The Old Pier Tearoom is the perfect spot to see these local cheeses. Come and enjoy local delicacies handmade with local love in addition to The Old Pier Tearoom’s range of teas.

The Old Byre Visitor Centre

On the Isle of Arran’s western side, The Old Byre Visitor Centre hosts a range of incredible souvenirs like oak whisky barrel shavings, local clothing, and several food options to choose from! The Cafe Thyme offers the ultimate mix of Turkish and Scottish cuisine, many of which use the local cheeses we’ve mentioned to complement the dishes – including calzones, pies, and flatbreads.

Indulge your afternoon with a lunch of Arran mustard cheddar with caramelised onion and Tzatziki, and we bet you’ll be coming back again and again. And while you’re enjoying your fresh and local lunch, treat yourself to a view of the Druid standing stone in the nearby field.

Arran Fine Foods

Another Lamlash hot spot, Arran Fine Foods, covers all the best local artisanal foods you’d ever want to buy on the Isle of Arran. We’re talking chutneys, chess, jam spreads, chilli, and other incredible artisanal eats that are the perfect addition to a picnic overlooking the beautiful landscapes of Arran.

Of course, as you’d expect, Arran Fine Foods also offers a great selection of cheeses. The Arran gift box you can purchase grants you a great selection of local foods, with a little bit of everything to try. These hampers are affordable, and the perfect way to taste the cheeses the Isle of Aran is known for.

If you’re more inclined to buy a single cheese, we recommend Arran Mustard Cheddar, Chunky Pickle Cheddar, and even Crushed Ginger Cheddar.

Tillamook Cheese Factory Tour: This is What You Need to Know

pinterest graphic with boy looking into the cheese factory tour with the text tillamook cheese factory

Cheese, please!

Several years ago, during an anniversary trip, John and I visited the Tillamook Cheese Factory without the kids. We’ve told them about it several times, and they’ve always wanted to go. And, really, can you blame them? You get to eat cheese (maybe even ice cream) and count it for school!

For a true glimpse of how the production of cheese happens, all the way from the dairy farm to your table, nothing is better than a tour of the Tillamook Cheese Factory in Tillamook, Oregon. We recently had the chance to visit the creamery with the kids and everyone loved learning about how cheese (and ice cream!) are made.

Recently, my parents were in town, and we were looking for things to do in Tillamook, on our way to Cape Lookout State Park . We decided that a Tillamook Creamery Tour was a perfect choice. It was pretty cool a few years ago, but let me tell you! They have made some serious upgrades since our last visit!

Things to know before you visit the Tillamook Cheese Factory for a tour

What are the Tillamook Cheese Factory Tour hours and days?

You can visit the Tillamook Creamery and get your cheese fix almost any day! They’re open from 8 am-6 pm Sunday-Thursday and 8 am-8 pm Friday and Saturday, except for a few major holidays. They do close early or open late on others (like New Years), so be sure to check before you head out if it’s a holiday .

What is the cost of the Tillamook Cheese Factory tour?

Here’s the best part when you’re on a budget. The Tillamook Cheese Factory tour will set you back exactly $0.

Yup, it’s totally free. And it includes cheese samples. 😋 Win-win!

Is the Tillamook Cheese Factory tour good for kids?

Yes! Kids of all ages will enjoy the opportunity to “feed” a calf, try their hand at milking, and watch the process of cheese being made from the viewing deck. Because the tour is self-guided, you can adjust the time at each station according to the interest and ages of your kids.

Is there a gift shop or ice cream shop?

Yes! There are actually both. After you’ve taken the Tillamook Cheese Factory tour, head back downstairs where you can browse the gift shop.

Then, if you like, head to the Dining Hall for food and ice cream!

How long does the Tillamook Creamery Tour take?

Because the Tillamook Cheese Factory tour is self-guided, it can take as little or as long as you’d like. However, I’d plan on spending an hour or two to enjoy your time fully.

What about visiting the Tillamook Creamery with food allergies?

If you have a food allergy, you’ll have to read their allergen statement   and decide for yourself if you feel comfortable. In general, we steer clear of the ice cream because Garrett has a peanut allergy, and they do use the same equipment for all their flavors, although they do sanitize between. But, we totally feel comfortable with their cheeses and eat them all the time.

What do you learn during a Tillamook Cheese Factory Tour?

During a Tillamook Cheese Factory tour, you can expect to learn everything about how the creamery is run. You’ll find out how the cows are cared for, the process of making cheese and ice cream, and even get some hands-on learning in the Farm Exhibit.

What is there to see during a tour of the Tillamook Cheese Factory?

The Tillamook Creamery Tour starts with displays featuring their history as well as some interesting facts, such as the fact that they get about 1.6 million pounds of milk a day. And, that that milk is all made into cheese or ice cream within 24 hours. 🤯

Farm Exhibit

At the Farm Exhibit, you’ll learn about how the farmers care for the cows, how much milk is obtained, and the technology they are using to improve the care of the cows.

Next up, the kiddos can enjoy “feeding” a baby calf and trying their hand at milking a cow.

Did you know that it takes approximately 21 seconds for a professional to clean the udders of a dairy cow and attach a milking device? It doesn’t seem like it would be possible to do that fast, but our kids gave it a valiant try and proved that it is!

Viewing Deck

Down the hall from the farm exhibit is the viewing gallery, where you can learn about the actual process of cheese production.   From how the cheesemakers test the cheese for quality to how they weigh and seal them for transport to the store, you’ll see the entire process in action here.

You can also take a few moments and watch two short videos, one on the production of cheese and one about ice cream, that share even more information.

Sample Area

After you’ve seen how cheese is made, why not try some free samples? Head to the cheese sample area before heading back downstairs to pick your favorite.

Head down the stairs to the new gift shop to find yourself some treats to take home or just to ogle this custom Tillamook snowboard by Deviation .

Dining Hall

If everyone’s getting a little hangry or the thought of a fresh grilled cheese and ice cream is perfect, your next stop should be the Dining Hall. With everything from Tempura Battered Cheese Curds to Classic Tomato Soup and a Green Salad, chances are you can find something for everyone.

Last but not least, you really can’t finish a Tillamook cheese factory tour without letting your kids pretend to drive away, can you? Our boys said they were headed to New York…I’m not sure they realize just how long that drive would be! 🤣

There you have it! Our Tillamook Creamery tour review.

What do you think? Does it sound like something you would do?
