Built almost 2,000 years ago using the spoils of war in Jerusalem, the Colosseum’s official name is actually Flavian Amphitheater— named after the Flavian dynasty of Emperors who ordered its construction. The ancient arena once held up to 85,000 spectators and hosted bloody gladiator battles, wild animal hunts, public executions, and was even filled with water for a mock sea battle on at least one occasion! Admission to the Colosseum includes entry to Palatine Hill and Roman Forum, among the world's most significant archeological sites. The structures are right in Rome's center and easy to get to. Most of our tours include all the archeological sites at varied durations, but three hours on average. If the word "tour" is in the title then it definitely includes an English-speaking Colosseum guide. The Colosseum Underground tour is perfect for anyone who wants to do the most exclusive product, but be prepared to jump through some hoops. Tickets are difficult to come by so all visitors are asked to leave the purchase date of the tour open in case of a time change. The Arena floor is the second most exclusive product which visits the same stage the gladiators fought on. Finally, our Privileged Entrance Colosseum tour is our most affordable tour and a great value! It's easy to find our meeting points, and you'll always find an attendant with a sign reading "The Tour Guy" or "The Roman Guy" on it. Our Welcome Staff are friendly and will improve your overall experience. Our guides are knowledgeable and passionate about what they do which shows in the reviews. With special access and our expert guides, you can get more from your Colosseum tour. Explore underground tunnels, walk through the Gladiator’s Gate onto the battle floor, or take in the beauty of the Colosseum under lights on a night tour. Just choose your ideal Colosseum tour and leave the rest to us!

Rome is busy in the summer, which can be a challenge for visitors. Our Colosseum tours include skip-the-line entry which gives you a break from crowds. We also offer special access to areas like the underground and the arena floor. All tours include admission tickets to the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and Roman Forum. Look out for tours like Rome in a Day which also includes the Vatican and Sistine Chapel. Visiting Rome? A must during your stay in the capital is the Colosseum, an unmissable symbol of ancient Roman life. Also known as the Flavian Amphitheater, its name derives from “colossal” statue of the emperor Nero which once stood outside. Colossal in name, colossal in nature, the Colosseum was in fact the largest amphitheater ever built in the Roman Empire. Thanks to Walks Inside Rome’s Colosseum Tours , you too can experience a complete immersion in the beating heart of ancient Rome, between the underground and the arena of this amphitheater and the spectacular ruins of the Roman Forum . So journey back in time, to the glorious days of a great empire, inside the iconic Colosseum.

The Colosseum: behold the splendor and decay of the past

A great tourist attraction, with more than 7 million visitors a year, the imposing Flavian Amphitheater in 1980 has been declared a World Heritage Site together with the entire historic center of Rome within the city walls in their widest extension.

Considered one of the most famous tourist attractions in the world, the building (86 meters long and 54 meters wide) was built between 70 and 80 AD during the reign of the emperors Vespasian and Titus to accommodate up to 50,000 people ( or even 80,000) . It was used to entertain crowds with gladiator games and animal hunts, which were classic Ancient Roman forms of entertainment. Made of marble and limestone, the structure has since been damaged by earthquakes and various looting but remains an impressive vestige of the magnificence of Ancient Rome.

The Colosseum has 80 entrances and its system of corridors and stairs is still used today as a reference point for the construction of football stadiums. Today, visitors to the Colosseum enter the building from the south side, on the other hand, access is not as fast as in the days of the Roman Empire, it is better to get scheduled entrance ticket reservations .

The Colosseum tour starts on the 2nd floor. The different floors, four in all, were all built in different styles: Doric style for the 1st floor, Ionic style for the 2nd and Corinthian style for the 3rd. The floor of the arena consisted of a wooden floor covered with sand. Below you will see the Hypogeum: a tunnel system where training rooms, wild animal cages and death row prisoners once stood.

Essential visits to penetrate and understand the vestiges and lust of the past

With your local guide, you will explore and learn more about the history of the most famous monument in Rome. They will enthusiastically tell you stories and anecdotes about the people who fought in the arenas and the emperors who ruled them.

Come and experience the private or small group Colosseum Tours of Walks inside Rome, the right way to go for an exciting experience for the whole family.

I pay for two Netflix subscriptions because I can’t remember the login info for one of them. I like French fries in milkshakes (you're welcome) and travel is at the top of my priorities at all times.

I think you can usually tell a lot about a person from their app subscriptions as well. Well, mine are Audible, Headspace, The Financial Times, Chess.com, Lumosity, Netflix and Sleep Cycle.

Some people call me Sofilù or Peanut but my real name is Sofia. I was born and raised in Rome, but I’m also half American.

Although I’m not very tall, I always strive to reach high objectives in life and cereal boxes.. because, for some reason, my favorite ones are always on the very top!

I love new tech. I love learning about it, thinking about it, experiencing it. Even if I’m never going to use it.

IT Expert and Web Developer

Most of the people knows me as Alex, and probably that’s why almost everyone looks surprised when meeting me (funny thing from having a male name in Italy). One thing I’ll never get bored of… finding beautiful hidden gems in the eternal city and enjoying a Spritz at sunset.

HISTORICAL SITES

If you are interested in all things ancient Roman, there are numerous archaeological sites to explore. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine hill are top on the list of course. You can visit Rome’s first luxury shopping centre Trajan’s markets which was nestled into the hillside, or visit one of Rome’s largest public bath houses, the baths of Caracalla. Ostia Antica, a short train ride away gives the most complete view of Roman life. It is a Roman town like Pompeii in excellent condition. See how the other half lived at Nero’s Domus Aurea and not far away, a hidden gem of a Roman apartment - Case Romane del Celio with beautiful fresco decoration. For something a little spookier and cooler in temperature, the catacombs are a popular attraction for the miles of underground tunnels dug-out by hand to bury the dead.

If churches are your thing, then you have absolutely come to the right place with over 963 to choose from! St Peter’s Basilica is the largest and most famous, but not the most important church in Rome. The papal basilicas (St Peter’s, San Giovanni in Laterano (the Cathedral of Rome), Santa Maria Maggiore and St Paul outside the walls) are important for religious visitors, as are many of Rome's churches as they hold important relics of saints inside which have been visited by pilgrims over the millennia. Apart from being houses of God for prayer and reflection, the churches in Rome are also filled with masterpieces from many great artists, from the chapels themselves to the paintings and sculptures inside them. Sant Maria del Popolo in Piazza del Popolo is famous for its artwork by Caravaggio and Bernini as is St Luigi in Francese. At St Maria della Vittoria above Piazza Barberini your breath will be taken away by Bernini’s statue of St Theresa in Ecstasy.

ART GALLERIES

Many of the grand palaces of Rome also house art galleries today, these are the private art collections of the noble families of Rome. Owning and collecting art and ancient sculpture was a hobby for the rich and famous of Rome’s past and the more prestigious your collection the more important and powerful you were. Hence why the Vatican houses some of the finest artistic heritage. If you are an art aficionado, or want to learn more about Renaissance and Baroque artists and their work, the Borghese Gallery is a must as it is crammed full of masterpieces and hosts the largest single collection of Caravaggio and Bernini alongside other greats. For fans of Raphael and renaissance frivolity, the erotic frescoes and decoration in the Villa Farnesina in Trastevere should not be missed. If your tastes are more modern then the GNAM or the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art above Villa Borghese is for you.

THE VATICAN MUSEUMS AND SISTINE CHAPEL

The Sistine Chapel with its famous frescoed ceiling by Michelangelo is another must see when in Rome. The Sistine Chapel is inside the Vatican Museums which is essentially a large extended palace lived in by the popes over the centuries. Its halls and galleries represent the combined collection over centuries of priceless ancient artifacts and statues as well as some of the finest renaissance artwork spanning more than 5,000 years of diverse cultural heritage. The personal apartments of Julius II are also a highlight in the museum, known as the Raphael Rooms after their famous decorator.

Undoubtedly the top attraction in Rome is the Colosseum, which received a record 7.5 million visitors in 2019. The icon of ancient Rome, the Colosseum is famous for hosting gladiatorial combat and entertaining the ancient Romans with bloody spectacles for over 400 years. Two thirds of the ancient amphitheatre still exist, the biggest stadium of its kind in ancient times and the largest Roman monument today, the Colosseum is a must see for all ages.

ROMAN FORUM AND PALATINE HILL

This is the heart of ancient Rome and the largest inner-city archaeological site in the world. The Roman Forum was the centre of the ancient city where religious, political and commercial activities took place. For more than a thousand years this was the nerve-centre of the empire. The Palatine Hill above is where the elite and later the emperors lived. For those interested in all things ancient Roman you should not miss these sites, they are dotted with the remains of temples, basilicas, triumphal arches and palaces. The viewing platform on the top of the palatine hill has a breathtaking view of the area. Both of these sites are included in the ticket for the colosseum and are often included in guided tours. Comfortable shoes, water bottles and sunscreen are a must!
